Great professor...okay here is the deal the first day of class he will hand out a outline of what the itinery for this class objective and what you can do to earn a A. MAKE SURE YOU DO ALL THE NEWSPAPER ASSIGNMENT AND EXTRA CREDIT...AND THE PAPER
You have to do the newspaper articles and papers on time, but other than that he is a very gentle and kind man and I really enjoyed listening to him.
very nice guy and helpful2
The class in general is excellent. Probably the only JAPANESE professor with such humor in class...its awsome! The tests are easy (Essay Form) and one paper assignment...interesting subject as well for those who major in IB or Pol/sci.....Def. A
don't take this class if you are a freshman... it was very overwhelming to do all this work my first semester of college. he is a very unfair grader and expects you to know everything.
if you think his psc 144 class is hard you shouldn't be at hofstra. All you have to do is write a lil history on china, japan, indonesia etc.
Fun class, really interesting subject matter. He's mad funny, it might as well be midnight at the apollo standup. he's hard paper grader but easy test grader. the TA is his crutch with the students that are too stupid to listen. otherwise he's great prof.
He's ok. He grades ok but this class is definetly not the best to take as a freshman in an FYP program. Its alot of work for classes that are supposed to help you adjust to college.
Probably the best cross cultural course. I would definately recommend it for biz majors. He is a great professor and very funny at times. Lots of work but not impossible to earn an A
I've done more work in this class than in my total college experience, but in the end, it was the best earned grade I ever had. He goes over papers with you, and will give you at least 10 extra points. COME ON, That's awesome.
alot of work but very fair. he always tries to help. also the tests are always curved a 75 is a B.
hard@$$ class. lots and lots of work, two long research papers. timeliness is ridiculously important.more work than all my classes combined but its really interesting stuff. he's a really likeable guy who expects too much from us dumb@$$ hofstra students
He is a really nice person. He gave me a d+ when I definetly should've failed because I tried hard in the end, but the course is so hard! The grades are fair, but its not an easy ride. I'd only take this class if you have a genuine intrest in politics.
This man is the worst professor I've ever had at Hofstra University. He is unfair, uncooperative, and uncommunicative. His powerpoint presentations are amazingly disorganized, and doesn't embellish any kind of ideas or theories he tries to present.
Ok, here's the deal. Kanatsu is a VERY nice man. BUT his classes are NO JOKE. I did well because i like political science and i really studied my ass off. If you can write good papers he will love you. and you MUST go to class or you will fail.
Downright horrible. Stay away at all costs. I've never had a grade lower than a B until I took this man's class. It is his failure as a teacher that subsequently affected my grade and GPA. You are a terrible, terrible man Dr. Kanatsu.
Great professor, you do have to work hard. Pay attention in class and do the work and you'll be fine. PAY ATTENTION TO DEADLINES. Emailed him my term paper on time, but since i did not physically give him the paper he did not accept it.Got a C instead ofB+
great prof
this guy sux
Dr. Kanatsu is adorable and very friendly, easy to get along with. Extremely helpful, knows his stuff. A little tough and lots of work, but if you work hard, you do really well. Grades very fairly. I got an A. Taking PSC 130 next semester with him. Highly recommend.
Professor Kanatsu was one of the best professors I had at Hofstra. He was a great teacher, in addition to being interesting and hilarious. His class isn't too hard if you turn things in on time. He also has several opportunities to turn in extra credit, so don't be dumb- do it and you'll get an A!
One of the best professors I had here at Hofstra. Class is not a cakewalk, but he's the rare professor that actually puts extra time in for his students. And you actually leave the class having learned something.
You don't need to show up or read but be prepared to cram and memorize everything the night before the test. Go to the review session and you're fine. I got an A doing that. Read magazines in class. So boring.
TIP OF ADVICE... LEARN MAYBE A LITTLE BIT OF ENGLISH BEFORE TEACHING IN THE UNITED STATES!!
Dr.Kanatsu is very fair. Do the news summarys and don't miss more than two classes. Also participate on the blackboard discussions. Take advantage of the extra credit. I did just enough to get by and I got a C+, looking back I could have put in a little more effort and got a better grade.
His classes are boring. He is not understanding at all. Lot of work that can consume many hours during the week. If you could, dont take him, take someone else.
Latin Amer. Pol...He's a great teacher and CARES. BUT BE PREPARED for an advanced level course. I dropped the class, but still recommend him if you have the time to put into it. Requires a lot, but is a great class. Very Advanced though.
Second time taking a Dr. Kanatsu. One of my favorite profs, he is so dedicated to teaching and does not force opinions on students (very rare at HU). Lots of work, but allows for 10 extra credit points. Fair grader, very sweet and pleasant, highly recommend. Very upbeat and interesting.
Dr. Kanatsu is by far the most dedicated teacher I have come across. He really cares about his students and puts forth a considerable amount of effort with such things like blackboard.com. His class is not the easiest; however, you will learn a lot and he is fair. I thought he was such a good teacher I am taking another class w/ him in the fall.

Dr. K goes very much into depth with each country. Dr.K makes the material interesting and i learned alot during the class. Took it during the summer and although it is alot of work, he will help you if you need it.DO the news summaries on time and try and participate. He is not hard to understand at all, so stop complaining and ur in college not HS
Dr. Kanatsu is very knowledgeable and is a fair tester. If you do the (considerable amount of) reading and take good lecture notes, not only can you get an A, but you will learn a lot. I never had a problem understanding his English.
You can count on learning a lot about Asia. Plenty of reading and writing, but he is such a pleasure to listen to lecture that it's hard to complain. He's also very non-threatening, which is a plus. Tests are basically writing down what you know about the country from class. This man should really have more leverage and prestige in the dept.
great
I have enjoyed his class from the very begining. He's a great teacher. Very knowledgeable and really funny.
Tons of Writing!
The first day of class he admitted he was not the easy A you are looking for in an elective....But you learn a lot!! And if you plan on working you can have fun while EARNING an A. don't take if your looking for an easy elective.
THIS PROFESSOR WAS A BLAST TO HAVE. HE WAS JUST GREAT. HIS LECTURES ARE NOT BORING AT ALL AND HE IS VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND. IT'S AN EASY A IF U DO HIS WORK WHICH ARE NOT THAT DIFFICULT. DO THE SUMMARIES, MOVIE REVIEW, BIOS AND FEW EXTRA CREDIT, ITS AN A. IT MIGHT SEEM LIKE A LOT OF WRITING BUT COMPARED TO OTHER CLASSES THESE WRITING WILL PAY OFF.
It's just like everyone says... cool guy, very involved, non-threatening, lots of work, and a bad choice if seeking an easy elective.
Great teacher. Lectures are intensive, but not too bad. Exams basically involve summarizing the entire modern political history of two countries. You get a key terms list both before and during the exam, and there are review sessions so the exams aren't bad if you try.
Horrible. He has a Japanese accent that I could barely understand to start off with. He is such a hard grader, and wont let you do your essay if you dont get your outline approved first, which in my experience is very difficult. He does give opportunities to improve your grade, but it is still not enough. My advice would be to avoid at all costs.
he seems nice, but he can be mean if he wants to. A hell of a lot of work, dont take him if its just an elective. do as much as extra credit as you can.
ok these people are all on crack. i should have a PHd in asian politics after this little mans class. ridiculous, 8 weeks of current events thats 40 articles of ****, then 3 essay tests that cause ur hands to fall off, + a long paper, grant the TA whose review secessions i knew more that he did or he did not seem very excited about being the TA
I agree with the previous rater that all the previous raters MUST have been smoking some serious sherm. I am an A student and I got a C in this class. This class is way too much work for an elective. If your paper topic and thesis aren't "acceptable", then even if you write a paper it won't be graded. Run for the hills!
I LOVE Professor Kanatsu! He is REALLY nice and extremely helpful, his tests are essay tests but if you take notes, listen to what he says, and go to the review session, you will be FINE. He is a really nice guy!!
Really nice and friendly guy. His class is extremely boring. It's not really his fault, it's just that asian politics can only be so exciting. Exams are long. Each one asks you to basically write the entire political history of two countries. Add info from the texts for extra points. Otherwise notes are all you need.
Kanatsu is the man! I ahd him and it's not as hard as people say he is. Some of the stuff is really interesting to learn, just show up, pay attention and do the work that he says to do. He's always willing to help when you need it. I wish I could take his class again
I took several classes with him because he is awesome. His class requires alot of effort but it is not impossible to get an A. You definitely learn a lot! He cares about your progress and goes out of his way to help you. Don't leave Hofstra w/o taking a course with him!!
I love this man! He is really funny and extremely helpful. You will actually LEARN a lot from his classes as he is an excellent professor and gives meaningful assignments. The tests are challenging and the work load is a little much at times, but if you are intelligent and can hand in assignments on time you should be fine. Great professor!
Great prof, always willing to help and funny too!!!
He is nice teacher. Just go to class and do ur work every week. Not a good grader for tests and paper, but there are lot of other things where u can earn points.

An excellent professor. All of his lessons are fully explained and his exams and assignments are fair game. I definitely recommend taking one of his classes.
One of the worst teachers i have ever had. unhelpful. does not give you the time of day. teaches an elective course, but treats it as if it were graduate level, ABSURD
kanatsu is a really great guy and is a really funny professor. he makes the class bearable with jokes but has a 16 page syllabus. he assigns lots of petty assignments like news summaries. however, his midterm and final equal 30% of the final grade. most of your grade is papers and assignments. if you're up for the work, take kanatsu.
8 weeks of 5 news summaries-one for each day. 2 papers, but you can rewrite the 1st one as the 2nd one. 3 exams basically rewriting all the notes you took thru the semester. Lectures are Powerpoints, which are outlines that he elaborates on. Online study session & group study before each exam. lots of work, but only if you wait till last minute
Nice guy, but teaches like a grad class and grades EXTREMELY hard. Don't take him unless its your last resort/you want to be doing hours of homework (esp for an elective class). If you get stuck, go to class because trying to make up the work while missing his class is impossible.
helpful and funny..just pay attention in class and its fine.. he is samurai
He's a really tough grader and assigns a lot of work, but if you come to him for help, he will tell you exactly what to do to get an A. Allows rewrites on papers, and allows you to write as many as you want. takes the highest 6 paper grades, a midterm, final, and attendance/participation for your grade. Straightforward, cool guy, funny accent.
NEVER TAKE HIM...he grades extremely hard, you can rewrite but he says a rewrite does not ensure a higher grade, he usually will give 5 points more...he emails you 500 times a day with new assignments but you cant even understand his emails
insane work load! 2 analysis papers, a map quiz, mandatory blackboard discussions, 40 current event articles, 3 in class team debates, 2 difficult in class essay midterms, a take home final, and a huge term paper. he grades very hard but at least he offers extra credit. good luck.
Prof. Kanatsu is by far the worst C&E professor in Honors College. He told us multiple times he did not want to teach C&E and is continually let down by Honors students. His grading is impossible to understand, and when you ask for help he cannot clarify what he wants. The class median for the midterm was 60, the median for the final was 45. :(
Definitely would NOT take him ever again. Wouldn't reccomend to anyone.
Good teacher but a hard grader, classes are intersting, but you MUST do the reading. NEVER EVER submit a paper late, even if he gives you permission. IT WILL BE A ZERO!!! Even if he tells you beforehand it will 'be okay' It won't
Prof. Kanatsu is a good teacher. However, he does give a lot of work, and be prepared to do papers, a lot of articles, and a lot of readings. He does not accept papers late, unless there's a good excuse. Tests are very difficult, do a lot of studying. However, he does give extra help before the exams. He also gives extra credit, which helps.
If you are the kind of student who does not do the readings, do not take this professor. You will get a C, D, or an F, and he will give it with morbid glee. However, if you are willing to do the readings and incorporate them into the many papers and ask him questions when necessary, he helps those who help themselves. Great person and lecturer.
took him while in japan. very critical when it comes to writing assignments...rude and mean. outside of the classroom he was cool.
Seems nice at the beginning of the semester especially when you do all the work required of you the way he wants it. The minute you step off the path however, he WILL give you a bad grade if he simply doesn't like your argument in a paper, etc. When you ask him why you got that grade he is incredibly rude and offensive. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! His tests are EXTREMELY difficult the class average was only a 50 and he still did not curve the tests! He doesnt let you submit your research paper unless he approves your outline which is impossible hes so critical about it & he is extremely rude, nasty and sarcastic when he emails you back even though he looks nice, terrible
His tests were based entirely on his teaching, so the 6 textbooks that he "requires" for the class are all useless. I got an "A" in the course, but believe me, this was one of the hardest courses I've taken in my life. His tests are long and his research paper is very long as well. Overall, cute, but rude and difficult.
He was unbelievably hard. routinely gave paper grades in the 10-50 out of 100 range.
Avoid this class at all costs. Took this as distribution, waayyyyyy toooo much work. Weekly current events assignments, 2 essay midterms, 2 4 page papers, a term paper. His class is brutally boring, with lots of work needed to be done outside of class.
I took this class for distribution credit and it was way too much work. He docked me 30 points off my final paper because I didn't check my email over thanksgiving break when he emailed me that my topic wasn't approve. He then decided he wasn't even going to grade my paper which is worth 20% of the final grade. Worst class I've taken at Hofstra.
Took 2 classes with him. If you're looking for an easy A, do not take his class. But if you're genuinely interested in the topic, Kanatsu is one of the best professors you can have at Hofstra. Always available outside of class. Yes he is tough, but if you're not willing to put in the work then you probably don't deserve a good grade anyway.
Professor Kanatsu is a great professor. He gives a lot of assignments, but this means that a bad grade on one won't kill your grade. He also offers plenty of extra credit. His multiple choice tests are hard, but other things can make up for them. He is always willing to give feedback on papers, and cancels extra classes at the end of the semester.
This guy is too much. Avoid taking this class if you can because his work loads are just too much to handle
Professor Kanatsu is a helpful man that rewards hard work with a good grade. It's as simple as that. The people who say he is unfair or too hard simply haven't taken his class through to the end, and dropped. I learned more in Professor Kanatsu's Asian Politics and Chinese Politics courses than I probably will in all my other PSC courses.
Professor Kanatsu is extermely helpful when it comes to the paper or when you dont understand a concept. However, his tests are unbelievably impossible. The class average was a 40 and no curve on the midterm, and the final was just as brutal. -3 points each time you miss a class over 3 without a note. The way he grades the 2papers is tough as well
He is a great guy. Always willing to help. He wants you to learn. Very responsive to emails, always willing to proofread your papers. Difficult, but he makes it interesting, and he will always help if you ask. My favorite professor I have had, and I have little interest in Asian Politics. If you genuinely try, you will get a B or an A
My favorite professor at Hofstra. Great guy. Very intelligent and only wants each student to learn and succeed. Gives a lot of work but it is manageable. You will only get a bad grade if you show you don't care. Learned so much from this class and I would recommend him to anyone.
Easy A if you read the syllabus and do the work. The textbook was extremely helpful in preparing for exams.
Hard to please. Tests were hard. A lot of info to remember. Allows revisions of assignments before they're due, so you have a chance to improve your grade. Strict with deadlines. Expects A LOT out of each assignment. Not a class for the lazy. You will definitely learn though, he's an intelligent man. If you're ready for the work, take him.
his class was really boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He does not encourage student participation and all he does is talk talk and talk. Plus the work load is too much. He looks nice but he's really not.. Don't take the class
Very difficult class with ridiculous timelines. Avoid if you can.
Great professor and class...Dr. Kanatsu expects a lot out of his students, but, if you do the work, you will be fine. There are a lot of grades in this class, so, if you don't do well on one assignment, there are others that can still hold the weight. 2 papers, Japan news summaries due for any 8 weeks of your choosing, 2 tests, a map quiz, etc.
In this class I learned how to BS your way to an A. Can't tell you how excited I was to be in this class until the end when I realized the BSer in the class who was even writing his paper during class on his laptop, got an A,but I received a C. It pays to talk in class even if you have no idea what you are saying for this class. Particpate for an A
Unless you are absolutely forced into one of his classes, save yourself the brain-aneurism and avoid at all costs. Even as someone who does well in classes and has a good relationship with my professors, I find that this guy is absolutely the worst. Extremely picky on assignments. God help you if you take his class.
good professBS
He is tough and his tests aren't easy, but that's what makes the class great. Dr. Kanatsu actually wants his students to learn as opposed to just spoon feeding the test to them. Study, read the textbook, and don't be shy about attending his office hours or emailing him. He comes off rather stoic, but is one of the most genuine professors I've had.
If you are a PSC student, he is one of the best professors I have had in the past 3 years of being here. If you pay attention, email him and really work through his notes to you, you'll be fine. He WANTS you to succeed and gives you all the tools to do well, you just have to pull your weight. You will actually have to work for your grade.
His class is very boring and too many lecture!!! Don't take the class:(
Boring class, long lectures. He sometimes gets angry and lashes out if you don't pay attention.
He is so boring. Only stands up infront of the class and lectures. Would not recommend to anyone. Not only does he just talk for the entire class period, but it is also a lot of work. Avoid at all cost
Requires you to purchase his textbook he wrote for the class. Literally includes just pictures of the powerpoint slides he goes through in class, but with hardly as much information as he actually lectures on about... Barely can speak English, good luck asking questions and getting valuable answers... AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Heres the honest truth. Kanatsu is a really good professor, he ACTUALLY wants you to do great just that you HAVE to earn it! His grading policy is clear. You have to read the text, don't skip class, do all the online hw and write proper emails! That simple! If you show him respect, & effort.. I guarantee you'll get an A! It's A LOT of work but fair
Kanatsu is obviously very intelligent and passionate about the information he teaches but this is one of the most ridiculous classes I've ever taken. He is so incredibly particular about the assignments and will really screw you over with the tests. He's not a bad guy but I took his class as an elective and the amount of work is just absurd
Terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible teacher.
Professor Kanatsu really cares about his students and tries very hard to give feedback and advice whenever he can. He reviews your assignment before you hand it in so that you can improve on the grade. He is a tough grader but only because he wants to see you push yourself.
Dr. T is the best professor I have had hands down! One of the most genuine people I have met. He really cares about helping you in class and planning out your future. Take time to talk to him and get to know him. I recommend him to everyone.
He is very nice and always tries to help his students. A is not difficult if you finish all assignments on time. Take him if you want to learn something!!
He is a really passionate teacher, and is very knowledgable. You have to do some research for your three countries, but you learn a lot from him and your other classmates. He is very enthusiastic.
JUST AWFULLLL!!!! Stay away. Ruined my gpa
Having Professor Kanatsu for one of my classes made me realize how some teachers really push their students to strive academically, especially with consistent reading in the textbook, strictly graded pop quizzes, and a final paper with unclear instructions. I would try to stay away from this professor since he demands so much out of his students.
Dr. Kanatsu is terrible. He struggles with analysis and fails everyone on most pop quizzes if you don't use a buzz word. He allows zero absences and provides no timelines for final projects. He also assigns presentations over email and gives you 36-48 hours to complete them. Overall super unmanageable and the worst. He will tank your GPA.
nightmare. he'll fail you on pop quizzes if you dont use buzz words, even if you said the same thing in other words. he would send random assignments (not on syllabus) out and expect them to be completed in 36 hours. graded really roughly and didnt explain grades. everyone i've talked to told me to steer clear & they were right.
Kanatsu is a lovely gem of a man who listens to his students, respects their viewpoints, and is willing to talk through almost any subject. He does make you do quite a lot of writing, but he's so genuine and isn't that tough of a grader.
I was sacred going into his class based on some of the reviews, but he truly is not as bad as the reviews make him seem. He does not always explain things well, goes through topics very quickly, and does not give the best feedback, but if you take the best notes you can it's not hard to get a good grade and he's genuinely a nice guy.
Asynchronous course that SHOULD'VE been easy. He blatantly stated in his syllabus that late work is 100% fine due to the asynchronous course, and if you got everything in by the end of semester you were good. I did this; found out he tried to give me a UW without telling me back in October. I had to fight him on it (and won), which he did NOT like
This class is a guaranteed A if you do all the assignments and listen to him. He has a lot of interesting opinions about the readings.
HORRIBLE PROF!!! Very picky with quiz answers and will mark it entirely wrong if you don't answer it the way he wants it. He didn't even let me write my final paper; gave me an extension and yet rejected ALL of my essay prompts no matter what and you aren't "allowed" to write the paper until he approves. Never heard of such a ridiculous policy.
Of all the political science professors at HU, Kanatsu is the worst by far. If you don't answer questions the EXACT way he expects, he marks you wrong completely (no partial points), his lectures are poor, & he is ridiculously strict with extra credit. Don't bother taking him, even if you really need to. You're better off with any other professor.
I don't know why so many people dislike Professor Kanatsu because he's honestly fine. Sure he doesn't give that much feedback on assignments, but the material is fairly easy and there are plenty of extra credit opportunities.
This was the worst professor I ever came into contact with at Hofstra. He gave so many quizzes with no time to study in between. The quizzes were short answer if you do not use word for word what he said in class you get ZERO credit. He is rude and a horrible professor. I would recommend a switching if you get this professor.
extremely harsh grader
He's sort of mean and difficult to interact with but as time goes on, you sort of realize that hes just mad at the world and its not personal so take that as some sort of advice lol. either way, class work is easy and you have to follow his instructions to a T, dont be afraid to ask him too many questions, even if hes rude about it. Just ask. :)
If you don't write your answers 100% the way he wants, you miss the point. No half points. Gives take-home quizzes after every class. towards the end of the semester, he switched to in-class tests, 10 minutes Is all you get. His slide notes lack information. Not allowed to ask peers for help. only him. His 'help' isn't helpful. Goes on many rants.
Super rude professor. It feels as if he doesn't want to teach the class or help his students do well. If your work isn't done exactly how he wants it done, you get no credit at all. Not to mention, he also accuses students of plagiarism, even if their answers are completely correct and original. Should honestly be fired.
He doesn't care about his students and doesn't care if you have things going on outside of class. If you miss a class, you will feel like you've fallen behind and he will give you such a hard time about making up the work you missed. He's also a stickler for cheating, so watch out.
He doesn't care if you or a family member is dying. The workload is too much for an undergrad level course and he expects you to act like a grad student, especially when it comes to his assignments. He's also very rude when answering questions. Goes off on tangents and makes rude remarks instead of doing his job and helping you grow as a student.
He is all over the place and a complete mess of a human being. He piles ungodly amounts of work, gets very aggressive towards students, and is ridiculously strict on syllabus and assignments. NGL, he will do everything in his power to make his class your top priority, and even if the whole class is struggling, he won't help anyone. Bad teacher.
Take home quizzes are majority of your grade. There a quiz for almost every lecture day. Recommend attendnce since quiz will be based on lectures and missing that day will impact how you do on the quiz. The wording is vital since one word can make your answer incorrect. Good news is there are no midterm or finals, and offers extra credit if needed.
He's one of those professors who thinks they're always right just because they've done things others haven't done. He intentionally makes it difficult to do well in the class, piles work at random, and is ridiculously strict on syllabus requirements. Don't attempt to take if you just need the credits. He will make you lose your interest in PSC.
doesn't even talk about the topic of the class and won't give you points on quizzes unless you use his exact wording
