really good teacher, makes material easy to understand. doesnt make you feel stupid for asking questions. as long as you do the hw you will do well. just dont let your phone go off in class, he takes points off your tests for that!
Great teacher but with alot of rules and regs. He takes no prisoners so if you don't keep up you're better off dropping the class. If you do keep up you'll be rewarded with a great math experience. Better than most math teachers!
I Love Tal! He is the best math teahcer i have had in my school career. he palys it seriouse, but deep down he just cares about the success of his students, although he cant help but slip a joke in here and there. do your HW and go to class. makes you feel comfy about asking questions. always clear. DONT let your cell go off, He hates that
I love Tal too! He was one of the best teachers I've ever had and by far the best math teacher. I hated math, and still do, but Tal, some how, made it seem not so bad. I'm so grateful for his help and thoughtfulness. He genuinely cares about students and their success. I wish I could spend every semester with him. I love that guy!
At the beginning of the semester I couldn't stand him, but as it went on I ended up liking him a lot. He loves the subject, and wants the students to do well. Generous about his points & is very clear & helpful.
worst teacher i have ever had. He was too fast and rude when it came to knowing answers. I got a b in the class but i still hated it.
horrible hooorrrriiible teacher... it's only the 3rd week and i am already completely lost. he's a jerk and doesnt realize the class has no idea what theyre doing..but just goes on and teaches stuff no one gets.. hes just a bad teacher.
Hes cool and his class is easy, unless you suck at math
Whoever wrote the last comment is wrong. Tal was a very patient teacher. He made a difficult topic easy to understand. He really cared that all in the class was following along. He was never rude...he was actually a very nice guy who seemed to enjoy teaching. He did get upset if any student became disruptive but he always handled it professionally.
Necessarily tough, fair. Good guy.
The only reason I'm passing is because of Tal. He's great. And I would have given him a "hot" rating if he hadn't gone and shaved his head.
A lot of people in the class hated him but the way he teached totally worked for me and I got an 'A' even though im a c average student. Be prepared to do 3 hours hmwk weekly and you must not miss any classes in order to actually keep up.
I freaking LOVE TAL! He helped me out so much with my homework. I missed one class and I was so lost, and all I had to do was go and ask him for help, and he clarified everything for me. He won't hesitate to take time out of his own schedule for you, I want him as a teacher next semester!!!
This was the 3rd time I took math 107. He explains everything very clearly. He does everything he can to help you get an A. With open notes on quizes and cheet sheats on tests. Realy nice guy, very helpful. I learned that if you actually do the homework (which is never too hard in his class) you understand math and get good grades!
Tal's cool. Handouts given every class. We go over them in depth, and problems are very similar to quizzes and tests. I liked getting progress report after each test telling me my grade and rank in class. One of the best teachers I had at SBCC.
Expect lots of homework and he never lets the class out early...but he is very thourough and clear in his explanations...and he is a very approachable, nice guy. I got an A on my first test! I never got an A on a math test before.
There is a lot of homework assigned but he only collects one section a day and he usually assigns three per night. He's a really good teacher. Very clear and will go over anything you don't understand. Always available to help you out. You'll learn so much from him. As long as you do the homework and ask questions you'll do fine!
I took this class in the summer. We met everyday. It goes very fast but Tal uses time well. I liked how he had quizzes and tests graded on the next day and always gave us our grade to date and rank in the class. Lots of worksheets that prepare you well for the tests. He kept atmosphere light so we all felt comfortable asking questions. RECOMMENDED
Tal is a VERY good professor. He can be intimidating at first but once he know you're willing to try then he'll be friendly. Appreciates the students to ask questions if they dont understand the problems, allows notes on the exams, doesnt trick the students on exams so do your hw bc they are pretty alike, just an overall great professor & person!!
our entire math class hates him to be honest. He's snappy and rude. He doesn't explain things well, he goes over it quick and moves on. He's substituting for out teacher Margie Reinhart for an entire month. the whole class just wants her to come back
great teacher! class didnt like him in the begining, but i think he is great. in all honesty he is the best math teacher i have had and i have an A in the class which is amazing for me. he was subbing for mrs reinhart (total idiot) and now shes back from her leave and i wish we still had Tal! great guy, do the homework, participate in class, and tu
tal is a great teacher! he moves quickly in class, but if you pay attention and go to class it's a breeze. he's a great guy and an amazing teacher, i miss him b/c we got m.reinhart back and shes terrible. tal is a great teacher, he knows his stuff definately sign up for his class!!
At first I hated him and his teachings and the fact that he was so picky and always marked me down for non-math related things. But then he came around and turned out to be okay. There is SO MUCH HOMEWORK, it almost ridiculous. Be sure to go to his office and ask for help.
Mr. Avitzur is a good teacher. He was very patient with me because English is not my first language. I recommend him.
Best math teacher I have ever had!
I have had some pretty lame teachers at SBCC. Tal is a good one.
Best math teacher I have ever had. Responded to all emails, (and I sent a ton) answered all questions. Lots of Homework but if you do it all he gives you a break at the end. Listen very closely on the first day and he will lay out exactally what he expects you to do. Do it and you will do fine.
Clear, patient, caring. He tries hard so students can succeed. I couldn't afford the book so he loaned me an extra copy he had for the semester. He kicks out rude and inconsiderate students.
Worst teacher I've ever had at city college.
very fair prof
Registered cause all reviews were good but do NOT get Tal. He is very strict. He doesnt know how to explain things in more than 1 way. When you ask another student for help he gets mad at you. Makes you feel inferior when asking questions. He says "Do you get it nod your heads yes or no" like we're in 1st grade. I Will NEVER take his class again.
Good prof. Tests and quizzes similar to handouts and what he does in class. Lots of homework but necessary in this class.
pretty average teacher
I had to drop all my classes. Tal emailed me and tried to encourage me to finish the semester. I don't think any of my other teachers even knew my name. He's a good teacher.
I hate math, but I really tried har. I did the homework, studied for every quiz/test (there's one every class) and I still fell behind immediately, failing before the semester was even half over.Makes no sense to non-Math lovers, goes LIGHTNING FAST,lots of hw. Cares about your education, but isnt nice about it. Picks favorites.
Amazing teacher. Always helpful. Actually listen to him and you will do fine. He tells you what will be on the tests. Always do your homework so you don't fall behind.
Tal is in fact the best math teacher ever!!!! He is so helpful and never rushes through anything. If you need help just ask, or he can read your face like a book!!! He always knew when i needed help if I didn't ask. He has a lot of extra credit to help you. Everyone who needs to take a math class needs to take him!!!
He was the worst math teacher I have had. He was helpful but did it in a way that made you feel stupid. He went on teaching even though a lot of the class didn't understand. I don't recommend him.
jeez, dont take him. He is good, but only for no lifer. Give's u lots of homework, and very, i mean very hard tests. JUST DONT TAKE HIM
This is definitely a tough class. Mr. Tal gives a lot of homeworks and quizzes, but also lots of chances for extra credit - make up errors on tests, extra points in class, even attendance at Mr. Pike's workshops. He stayed after class a bunch of times to help and even came to the math lab on a Saturday.
I would have to say that Tal was the only person to get through to me. He taught me so much i took math 107 with him right after math100. he is an amazing teacher!!! do your homework and listen in class and he will help you out in the end. he cares a lot about his students, unlike other professors here.
hard class, tons of homework, ruined me transferring on time!!!
Best teacher I've ever had. He's good for visual and auditory learners definitelyy and does what he can to give reason to what you're learning about. You'll get a lot of homework, but you don't have to do all of it and he doesn't grade you on it. Just make sure you understand it. Tests are tricky too. But I HIGHLY recommend him.
Seemed like an ass at first but he actually is really cool and a really good teacher I wish he were teaching 107. Tests are hard but he gives really good notes on every chapter. he goes fast so if you tend to fall behind don't!
Great teacher!!! He cares about his students so much!!!! He wants you to succeed in everything, he always is offering help and advice, you just have to approach him. He knows when someone is lost by their face and he stops everything to make sure everyone is caught up!!!! GREAT PROFESSOR!!
Good guy really loves math. Gives a lot of homework though. He puts a lot of effort into his class, and if you show him your putting effort into it, you should pass.
ive never understood math before i took it with him. I ended up getting a b in the class! put in the work and you will do fine. one of the best teachers ive ever had. so helpful and will work with you! theres a lot of hmwk but do it to keep up! your lucky if you get him as a teacher!
Good, strict, do your work, pay attention...
Good but strict patient teacher.
I do not like this man at all. He is not a good teacher. He hasn't taught me anything. I had to learn everything for myself at home with the book. He teaches for those who already knows maths, not for those who wants to learn.
He is extremely difficult but genuinely cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. He moves really fast and everything is out of the book so pay attention and get help as soon as you don't understand because he will quiz you and the tests are HARD!
GREAT professor!! He cares about his students so much. He is always there for help and advice. I never understood math until I took him. Thanks to him and his great teaching I am now able to transfer to a 4 year university. Overall Great professor and great guy!!!
I didn't like him at first. He was strict, assigned tons of homework and gave hard tests and quizzes. Many dropped right away. He never let us out early and covered parts of the book that other Math 100 sections never got to. Though I got a B in his class Math 107 and 120 were a breeze thanks to him. I was way ahead of the other students and got A
patient, teaches slowly which helps. his tests are pretty easy if you know the material.
YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO LEARN EVERYTHING ON YOUR OWn outside of class. He expects you to know everything for class time, he's unclear with the HW. He is willing to help out of class though. Not recomended if math isn't your subject and if you work, cus this class requieresALOT.
He is strict but it is for the best interest of the student. He covers the material really well in class and there aren't many surprises on tests if you pay attention in class and do some homework problems. He tries hard to make sure each student does well. My favorite math teacher I've ever had.
I had him for Math111,wasn't a walk in the park. He expects a lot from his students, but so does the course. He is very helpful OUTSIDE of class. I ended up passing all of the midterms but did not do well on the final=not passing the class. however i re took the assessment test and placed in 120. Makes me wonder if i deserved to pass the 1st time.
Had Tal last semesmester and glad i did. Tals patience in class as well as clarity really helped me understand the material. His teaching in class may seem strict but he does it so you pay attention and calls on you randomly to keep you on your toes, he strongly encourages attending class as well as doing the homework and if so, you should do well
This class required a lot of time and dedication. The homework load was demanding but he used a great online programmed that i loved making learning and completing the material a lot easier. Tal's class was hard but he is a great teacher that left me confident in my math abilities(something i never thought possible till after this class) Thanks Tal
As a returning student I appreciate his style. He goes slow and is very clear with his explanations and with what he expects. He does not let some of the young kids with attitudes disrupt the class, which I like.
Tal, is an amazing instructor. Very clear on everything and anything. If you are somewhat perplexed he will not move on until you comprehend any problem you have a question on. I would definitely take his class--again. He also allows you to use notes on tests which is awesome. However, attendance is mandatory, because he cares about his students!
Tal's amazing. He enabled me to understand math, which is miraculous. I would take every math course with him if possible. Easiness is a matter of perspective... If you're planning on trying to squeeze by, procrastinate, not study, never open your textbook; seriously GROW UP. Show up, practice/do the HW and you're golden. Take Tal.
This is the type of guy you like or dislike. And judging by some of the other comments, it's not impossible to like him. For myself, not the case. He was condescending and patronizing, and would not admit his mistake when I found the correct answer and he hadn't. If you're wanting a professor who's has your best interest in mind, this is not him.
RECOMMEND! Nice teacher, will help students, alot of hw&worksheets assigned but is actually rly useful, doent grad on hw, on midterms got to use half a pg cheat sheet, clear easy teaching, goes over any questions, usually a 10point quiz every class
He expects you to read ahead and come to class prepared with questions. He is very clear on how he wants you to do each problem. If you stay focused in class and do the homework, you should be fine.
He requires you to know math vocabulary, which actually helped me understand. Lots of homework, quizzes and tests, but he is very clear on what to expect. If you want to pass you must do lots of work. Glad I took him. Math 107 was a breeze after his class.
Teaching style was very bad. Did not seem prepared. Most of his lectures consisted of a textbook in his hand and him copying problems out of it saying it would be in the homework. He would get upset when people didn't participate but would make you feel stupid if you didn't understand something and had questions. Not helpful whatsoever.
Always there before class to meet, stays after as long needed to answer questions. Very clear about what to expect on tests. Spends a lot of time going over homework questions. Expects you to know math vocabulary and be "mathematically correct" in all your work. Lots of homework, but not part of grade. Though there is an open note quiz every class.
Unless you are really good at math, dont take this teacher. The tests are not at all like what he says that will be on them. If he asks a question and you dont know the answer he makes you feel stupid. Very by the book, I recomend someone else
Tal is extremely rude he doesn't grasp the concept that not everyone is good at math. He will drop you if you miss more than two classes that includes leaving early. He wants people to ask questions but gets mad when they don't understand it the first time. I would never reccommend him to anyone.
Tal is really rude and thinks this is the only class you art taking. He does not take into account that life happens and sometimes you can not do the reading or do the homework. He gets mad if you don't ask questions about homework but gets frustrated if you don't understand after. I would not recommend him as a teacher.
I missed class three times. Once the bus from IV was full. Another time I decided to drive and the cops stopped me. A third time my roommate thought it would be funny to mess with my alarm. Three absences, none were my fault, and I got dropped. He takes attendance seriously.
Tal was very clear with what he expected. He helped me a lot when I was having trouble. This was a tough class, there was a lot of material covered, but quizzes and tests were very straightforward, and similar to homework and sample problems covered during class. He cares and wants you to succeed. If you pay attention you should do well. Good guy.
Extra credit on mid-term and final, we also got it from doing the extra problems he put up on his website, if it wasn't assigned as homework. Really tries to figure out what people aren't understanding, most students seem to not care at all though. If you need help, go to his office hours, stay after class or go to tutors, there's tons of help.
Tal expects you to understand the material the first time. If you don't, he gets frustrated and makes you regret ever asking a question. He's a tough grader and not very clear when explaining material. If your not good at math, I do not recommend he'll make you hate it more
I assumed I would get by just by showing up. I did hardly any work and I failed. There is way too much material for one semester. The teacher offered lots of help, and there are Gateway tutors too. He is very clear about what he expects. Be prepared, lots of work necessary to pass.
Had him when I was at SBCC and to be honest, I hated him. He was so rude and if you didnt know something, he would give you a hard time for it. Not clear on what he wants from you and what you should do in his class. Never took him again and im glad I didnt. Not a good professor at all.
The Key Things I wish I Knew Before Choosing The Class: 30% Passing Rate 3 out of 10 will pass with a C 15-20hrs in Homework Per Week The Placement Test Shouldn't suggest. Daily Quizzes Tests DO NOT relate to quizzes but a combination of the skills you learn in class. New Topic Everyday Math in High School is different than this Good Luck
Expect lots of homework and quizzes each class. Tests are like what he covers in class. Lets you use a sheet of paper on tests. Class website tells you what topics are on the quizzes. Answered a bunch of my emails and was available for help after class and other times. Very patient and spends lots of class time answering questions. Awesome prof!
Worst teacher ever! Class is way to hard, no make up quizzes or test, gets made of you ask to many questions, overall I wouldn't suggest taking this class.
He tells you on the 1st day there will be lots of work, & there is! Class website helpful, it tells you what is on each day's quiz & what hw is due. Gives lots of examples in lecture & lets you use notes on tests & quizzes. Drops two lowest quizzes. Encourages questions in class & available for help before & after class. Great, caring teacher!
I found him to be crystal clear in his explanations and expectations, very patient and a really nice professor.
I never had a relationship with math before this class. The first couple of classes I was freaking out because he was very clear that If u do not do all the work he puts out, there is a high chance for you to fail. For the first time in my life I actually started doing all the homework in a math class and now it's super easy. All A's and I Love it!
I'm horrible at math but this class was very clear-cut and simple. He is a great teacher and if you do the homework, go to class, and pay attention you will do well. He lets you use notes on quizzes and a cheat sheet on the big test. If you don't do the optional homework you wont pass, his lecture are really clear and organized,
He took over our summer class after our teacher didn't show on the first day. Long class, but lots to cover. Tests every Friday but allowed one sheet of notes. Stayed after class to help me, generous with time, and there is also a Gateway tutor. Very clear with what he expects, and his class website really helps. Gets graded tests back really fast
Had us learn lots of vocab and phrases, which I hated at the time, but 107 and 120 were easy As after taking him. And I never liked math.
He's a really tough teacher, and assigns a lot of out of class work. But he's an amazing teacher, and if you try in his class, do all the work, and show up to class, you'll do great. He's really great at explaining things, and helping you with problems you don't understand. -Very accessible.
I didn't like all the homework that he assigns, but to be honest I'm glad I did it because it helped me do much better on the tests. He let's you use all your notes on quizzes and one cheatsheet on each test.
I finally graduated after many years at SBCC, and I've taken a bunch of math, from Math 100 to 220. Some of the teachers were good, and some not so good. Tal Avitzur was a great teacher. He really prepared me well for what was to come, not only with the math material, but also with general study habits and tips to succeed. Love the guy.
He is very naggy always talking about A students aren't tardy, A students this and that. ALOOOT of home work. If your less than 5 min tardy he will still mark you off as being late and puts you on the spot. If you go to the bathroom he will take his little notebook and mark you off. horrible it's like are we still in high school??? annoying voice!
This man is by far the worst "teacher" I have taken. Not only does he speed through the material, but he gets visibly irritated when you ask questions. Math isn't exactly my strongest subject, but I would try and grasp the concepts and just find myself looking out the window. Everyone in the class was looking at each other like "what the hell?!"
I did not like Tal at all. He goes too fast during class and doesn't provide or put on the board good enough notes to take home and try to re-trace your steps later. He gives a lot of group worksheets that aren't that beneficial. Google and Youtube taught me more math than he did.
Got to laugh at these mixed reviews. In his class now, definitely tough, lots of material BUT he's very clear with explanations, as well as what he expects. He helped a lot during office hours. I was amazed at how calm he's been, especially with some students that get overly emotional. Quizzes and tests just like lecture and homework problems.
Very hard class. His way of teaching is the hardest thing ever to understand. you cover all 9 chapters of the book. Do ALL homework. literally need to study every single day. Nothing he taught all semester helped me understand. had to go to tutors for hours and watch youtube videos. takes points off for smallest thngs. Vocabulary is a huge part
I used to be petrified of math and waited until I finished all my other requirements to take math. It was all I needed to graduate. I'm glad I got Tal for a teacher. He was easy going and made math easy. I took good notes (got to use them for the quizzes), did the homework, passed the class and stopped being afraid of math. I took him for 107 also.
The worst teacher I ever had. I had to withdraw from class because he was taking points out of quizzes because I didnt put much information about how I solved the problems. Therefore, I began writing everydetail, and he took points off my test because unnecessary information. If I can do it in my head I dont need info, but if I cant I need info
If you pay attention Tal is pretty easy to figure out. The questions on the exams are very similar to the ones on the class group worksheets and the ones he shows during lecture. He answered lots of questions by email. He tries hard to get students through. Signed up for his Math 107 next semester.
Lots of homework, lots of tests (every week), lots of rules (no cell phones, no effing around during lecture, no sleeping, no smelly food) but actually chill when you ask for help. Doing the best I've ever done in a math class.
I thought I liked math until I took this class. Worst decision ever.
Tal can either be a really nice guy or super cranky , he cares a lot for his students but can sometimes come off rude. He enjoys when students engage during lectures and communicate with him. His class is not difficult but if you are not present you will forsure get behind. He is a very nice guy if you are on his good side. do homework.
If math is considered you're weakest suit do not take his class. His lectures are very quick and if you look away for a second you are screwed. he will call students randomly to solve problems or steps, so make sure you are paying attention. he assigns homework as if we have nothing better to with our lives or no other classes to think about.
I've always been really bad at math. This is the first math class I did well in. Teacher scared me on the first day, telling us there would be lots of work. I did online homework, instant feedback, helped me learn better. This teacher was always available for help. I felt like he really wanted the class to do well. Take good notes, tests are simila
I was so hesitant to take this teacher's class based on reviews here, but I did and he was great. Yes, lots of homework, he tells you that the first day, but it does not count in your final grade and it counts as extra credit if you do it. There are lots of other ways to get extra credit. Lots of sample tests, lets you use a sheet of paper on tests
Would not recommend this clsss
Teacher is very thorough and always available for help. The thing I didn't like about this class is that it had many students that didn't seem to do any work and really slowed the class down.
Tal is a very good teacher.
Great Teacher, cares about his students passing. Besides the lots of homework, extra assignments and quizzes every day is he a thinker. He helps you outside his class hours and you can get extra credit for doing questions outside your class. Gives extra credit on the weekends. Not the best teacher, but definitely a recommendation.
I was excited for this class until it started. We started with 30+ students and ended up with 5. He does not use canvas, he makes us calculate our own grade, He only lectures one specific way of doing something and if you do it a different way it would be wrong even if you got the same answer. SO MUCH homework and the tests are different.
In week 10 of this online class. The Good: He's available for Zoom help 7 days a week, whenever you need him, even evenings. He gives clear explanations. He posts a lot of videos online. Test questions very similar to homework and videos. He's kind. The Bad: Online math is tough. Tests EVERY Friday! Lots of homework. I would take him again.
Took online. Prof. Tal was available whenever I needed help. I always felt stupid when it came to math classes. Prof. Tal was approachable and helpful and gave me confidence in myself.
I took Algebra with Tal 8 years ago. I was young, clueless, a poor student and had no idea what I was doing. I need to go back someday and thank Tal. He always had time to help and talk, and he gave me the confidence I so needed at that time in my life. I've since gone on to get 2 Master's degrees. I don't think I could have done it without Tal.
This teacher had the only online class with actual online lectures. He posted a lot of videos and also lectured 7 hours per week. That helped a lot. He was available for online help 7 days a week, from 7am until 8pm by appointment. None of my other teachers were so accessible. He cares about your success and that you are prepared for the next class
Tal was my math teacher about 5 years ago. He was a good teacher and always available to talk to and get help. I was pretty surprised to see some of his sculptures in a gallery in Napa this past weekend. I had no idea he is an artist as well.
Prof. Avitzur told our class on the first day that his job was to prepare us for Calculus and that we should be prepared to put in the time to do a lot of work. He was not kidding. It was not easy, but his class got me very prepared for 138, 150 and 160. I did better than most other students in Calc.
This professor was mediocre at best. I took this course at the peak of COVID and we had to take all tests and quizzes on Zoom with mics and video on so he could monitor. He wasn't very understanding, but also not rude. I wasn't super satisfied with his teaching abilities, but I was still able to pass. He did have accessible office hours, though.
You can expect a lot of online homework, and quizzes every class. He is very helpful with daily office hours in person and on Zoom. I must admit his grading is fair, with lots of partial credit. He offers many opportunities for extra credit throughout the semester. No make-up quizzes or tests, but he drops four quizzes and one of the four tests.
He is a strict person and takes good care of his students. He makes it easy to ask questions and is very accommodating. On the other hand, there is a lot of homework, and the only grade you get is a score on the weekly test, which can be difficult to pass if you are not good at math. I found the test questions difficult and struggled with them.
He does not allow apps on tests. That is not fair. I do not recommend him.
If I can get an A, anybody can. Quiz and test questions very similar to lectures, so pay attention. Ask him for help. My emails were answered same day, and he will meet you by Zoom any day, including weekends and evenings. He met me in the Math Lab too, when I asked. He makes you work, but he really wants to see us succeed here, and in Calculus.
Tal Avitzur is a GREAT math teacher! His lectures are easy to follow and he encourages students to stop him at any time and ask questions. He is a nice guy and is available all the time by Zoom, email or in person. He gives weekly quizzes but they really helped me get prepared for the tests.
