Have taken courses with Tamara twice now and is definitely one of my favorite first year profs. We had 4 guest lecturers (all lawyers she knows) come talk to us and that was le awesome. Tests were fair.
Very clear. Great guest speakers, and EASY TESTS! Study the powerpoints and you'll do well. Short paper in tutorial.
Awesome teacher, you don't need the textbook. Just study her powerpoint notes and you will do extremely well and also she posts them online!
Terrible TA. Absolutely hated this course. Its boring, somewhat difficult, and useless.
Very enjoyable course. If you attend class and study her lecture notes, which are extremely detailed and organized, you will do well. Use the textbook for an additional clarification source. Overall, if you put in the effort, you will be rewarded, if you don't, then you don't expect a good mark.
One of the fairest profs I've ever had. Put in the effort and you'll be rewarded. If not, don't expect to do well
Tamara is by far my favourite prof. Her side comments on how the CJS is failing us are hilarious, and she openly welcomes discussion of topics and questions in class. TA Denise was bad.... Just bad. Love Tamara though, I would take any class she teaches again!
She was good my name is william and i approve my own message. xD
Really great lecturer - 2 hours passes so quick and I'm not even super interested in law - took it as breadth. Easy exams too (if you spend the time to study) - lots of memorization though. She's super niceapproachable and it's great to have a tutorial with her.
Great prof. She has a law degree but chooses to teach so you can tell she is passionate about her subject and she knows her material well. Her lectures are great because she is very knowledgeable and funny. Her exams are fair as long as you actually put in the work and study. Would definitely take another class with her.
She is very good at public speaking, gives out detailed notes and encourages questions. Lectures were very clear and informative. Textbook was necessary to explain harder concepts. Exams very fair. Course content was pretty interesting. Unfortunately, the TA was boring and a tough marker which made tutorial almost unbearable.
Tamara was a fantastic lecturer and really engaging overall. We had some great discussions in our class and the exams were simple and clear if you attend class. The textbook however was fairly supplemental to the class and if one attended lectures, that would likely be sufficient. Overall Tamara is hilarious, fun, and intelligent. Highly recommend.
I would definitely take this class with her again. Best prof I've ever had. Emailed me back every time consistently, and gave me extra help when I needed it. She is so funny and awesome, her lectures were a breeze to go through. Don't really need the text, all the tests were on her lecture notes.
Tamara is an amazing prof, she's funny and makes lectures super fun and enjoyable. Her class was super easy, it's pure memorization. The paper and presentation though were graded a bit more harsher than I thought they would be, but I guess the feedback was fair enough.
The worst prof. goes way too fast, hard to keep up. She is very blunt and opinionated. My TA was amazing for the course, she helped me pass, so if you get a good TA you're set. Would not take another course with Tamara.
Spoke way too fast in lectures and it was quiet too so you have to sit on the edge of your seat. Great stories though and highly influential. Got a decent mark in my first semester thanks to my TA's.
Great lectures, but goes fast so you need to do your readings before class. Really helpful if you go see her and pretty clear about the evaluation. Loved the course material and Tamara makes sure she uses current events to spice up the material. Definitely would take a class with her again.
She's an engaging prof, but if you're just looking for an easy A, not the prof to take. She goes through slides way too fast, but does touch on interesting topics which is always a good discussion. I probably wouldn't take her again because of her exams, they're super hard, but she herself is a sweet person.
Tamara's class was so very interesting, she is super knowledgeable, lectures were awesome with videos, guest speakers, and interesting subjects. There will be three papers to write, 2 six page papers, and eight to ten page paper, as well as a final written exam on two essay topics. Overall great marker, and awesome prof.
The textbook for this class is pretty dry but professor O'Doherty is incredible! She is so aware of social issues and always goes out of her way to educate her students on more than just the mandatory course material.
Great prof, amazing lectures, exams were fair but get ready to read!
Great prof! So knowledgeable. Delivers information very very clearly and well. Easy to listen to her talk. Knows how students feel and what's going on in our society. Gives good feedback in office hours. Being knowledgeable is also her biggest downfall, she gives SO much information in lecture, hard to digest and know what to study!
Definitely one of my favourite professors. She does fly through lecture slides at a faster than average pace, but if you pay attention it really isn't a problem (plus she posts all her lectures in canvas beforehand). Keeps her lectures interesting and links material to current events. The class is definitely tough and heavy on readings, but do-able
She is great! Very information heavy but it is so worth it. Exams are hard but doable if you study. The term project is also very interesting in you enjoy legal discussion.
Tamara is a decent prof, though the lectures can be quite dry since they are two hours. The tests are fair, just make sure you actually read the lecture notes and making flashcards really helps. The exams are based off mostly the lecture notes, and the final exam and fair as well. The tutorial presentation also is easy marks to bump your grade up!
Tamara is an amazing prof. CRIM 135 can be a very boring class but Tamara does a great job at making the content a little more enjoyable. She is passionate about what she teaches and I would definitely take another class with her.
Fantastic lecturer. Gives detailed notes with fill in the blank sections. Lecture is definitely advised to go to because she covers everything in the textbook as well. Don't need to read the book at all as long as you attend and take good notes. Tutorial assignment is marked fairly easily. Tests are completely fair, no surprises.
Her classes are always interesting - amazing prof! Exams are almost always based entirely on lecture notes, so study the slides well. I find her exams to be a bit difficult but many people disagree so it depends on the person
LOVE HER
Tamara is a fantastic great professor, but her classes are hard. You actually have to work consistently and study in order to receive an A. I didn't do any of the readings for this class, they're irrelevant. The lecture notes (posted, btw) are your bible. Memorize them and you'll do great. Good luck!
Tamara is very passionate about what she talks about in class and is always ready to answer any questions a student might have during lecture. She keeps class interesting with videos and a guest speaker. Take notes in lecture or read the book.
She is a very talented individual. If you want to go for Criminology, she should be on the top of your list. She is fun. She makes the material really easy to understand. But the exams are really tough. She is a hard-working professor and she has the right to test us in that manner. FINAL is toughest!! It is like 50x more than midterm.
Tamara is a great professor! very engaging however this class itself is beyond boring and is very difficult. You have attend lectures a tutorials, and includes a lot of readings.
This was my third class with Tamara. Amazing prof. Really passionate about what she does and cares for her students. This class had no exams and was very unique to what i've ever done before.
She is by far the BEST professor I have ever had in any criminology course at SFU, and shes super funny which makes the class 10x better. Her notes are fill in the blank and very detailed. Read the notes a few times and you will do well on the exams. Dont bother buying the textbook rather go to lecture and study her notes thoroughly for the exams
I found that despite doing very well in this class, I never really understood what was being learnt. Also, she does not help students with the application of law, rather expects us to know by simply providing legal tests and NO practice whatsoever (especially with material post-midterm). Would definitely recommend Bowbrick over her any day.
I took 335 last term with Tamara and it was definitely one of my favorites of my degree. The course isn't easy, but it's totally possible to do well if you attend lecture and know the tests and cases. This was my fourth law-related course, so I was familiar with what law classes ask. I thought Tamara was easy to listen to and super fair.
Tamara's lectures are brutal. She is very passionate but tends not to actually "teach". Her posted lecture notes contain next to no information and she doesn't expand on it in lecture. She lays out many tests needed for the midterm and final but doesn't explain how to use them. Left this class with a good grade but felt like I learnt nothing.
I had nothing but good experiences with Tamara. I thought she was one of the best in the department.
I've taken 3 classes with Tamara (crim 135, 230 and 335) and I have YET to find a better prof than her! She is extremely knowledgeable - basically a human encyclopedia when it comes to law. She explains concepts thoroughly in lecture, but expects you to put in work as well! Super funny, respectable and very kind + approachable.
By far the best prof in the department, hands down. Dr. O'Doherty provides critical explanations of crim in the real world besides the traditional theories. If you hated 300 & 101 like I did 302 actually utilizes those traditional methods and gives context to modern applications. Clear guidelines and cares about her students. Recommend this course!
Tamara is inspirational. She was a phenomenal lecturer and made me look forward to classes. While she has a clear bias in her field, she is very upfront about it and ensures that other perspectives are also clearly outlined. While there can be a bit of information to know, assigned readings and course materials are interesting and easy to go over.
Unbelievable prof. I can not believe that others in the Crim department are not like her. It would make the program here at sfu a lot better for all if that was the case. Cares a lot about her students and actually shows that she wants her students to succeed. I hope she comes back every semester so I can take more classes with her.
Tamara is the best crim prof at sfu I take classes because shes teaching them. Her exams and assignments are always fair and her lectures are very interesting as she always brings in humour and real world examples! The TAs she uses are usually good too.
Went way to fast over slides so you cannot get anything down, does not post slides.
I took crim230 online and luckily, I had an amazing TM who made the class super enjoyable. The modules were really organized and made studying so easy. The midterm is take-home and the assignments help you prepare for the final. Study the cases that are outlined in the modules to do well on the final! Super fun class to take online.
Great prof was also quick to respond to emails and questions. She always went to office hours and offered to explain concepts in depth but only to the point of being deep enough for the context of the course. the way she does lectures is by giving us a word file of all the text in the slides and making us fill in blanks she leaves in the word doc.
Pretty Hard for a second year course. The TA saved all the students from failing. Needed to use entire time for exams.
Easily one of the top profs at SFU. She cares so much about your learning experience and provides super clear notes and lectures, making the readings essentially optional if you show to lecture. Very friendly and helpful in office hourstake advantage of them!
Tamara is the most knowledgeable and kind professor we have in the crim department. Not only is she an amazing professor, but she teaches the lecture material in a way that is easy to grasp and helps you learn to have a critical eye. Her classes are not easy per say, but if you put in the work, you will be rewarded.
Doesn't post any lectures so you have to self teach. Horrible exams; so difficult! (I did really well in 135 too). Would not recommend unless you want your gpa to drop.
Loved this class. One course that I actually wanted to attend. Lots of reading, and definitely a law class, but if you like law, take the class.
No lectures, and unclear guidelines.
Took CRIM 230 online and was really scared when looking at the marks breakdown, but, upon actually taking the class Tamara made the class easy to follow and was very helpful if you emailed about an assignment or wanted clarification was very accessible. Tamara holds office hours prior to major grading components (exams and assignments).
I loved her, she is so nice and helpful. You can tell she wants her students to do well. Keep up with the readings. Her lecture videos were helpful and the assignments were not hard. I hope I get to take her classes again.
Tamara was a very kind professor who made the assignments easy to follow. The class had long chapters to read each week, but weekly work was minimal. Very interesting and comprehensive course.
She is without a doubt one of the most caring professors I have ever come across. I bombed the midterm, and I had alot going on, and she made the effort to connect with the students that did not do well to see how she could help them do better, and how she can tweak the course for next semester. Exams are hard but I'm doing it during a pandemic soo
Professor O'Doherty is a very caring and knowledgeable person, however, the midterm and finals are extremely difficult and it's hard to do well if do poorly on either of these.
Tamara is one the best profs in the Criminology department at SFU, she knows what she is talking about and is easy to reach out to. Her classes are not easy, but she gives you all the information and resources you need to do well. Ask her for help, it will help your grade by a ton.
Offers optional zoom sessions (recorded) to answer student questions and concerns regarding course content, upcoming exams and assignments. She tries to clarify exactly what she wants for assignments and exams, although her courses may seem daunting at first, she puts in immense effort in helping students. Would definitely recommend Tamara!!
Tamara is my favourite professor at SFU, she's an amazing person! I have taken 2 courses with her and I am hoping I can take more and work with her in the future. This course is very easy to understand. She includes guest lectures from real sex workers to give personal experiences that compliment the material and make it easier to remember.
an actual angel! if you have the chance definitely take a class with professor o'doherty! she provides great feedback, makes online classes very interesting and interactive, and is very accommodating. she's definitely the best prof at sfu :)
Tamara constantly compared grades between students whenever being asked for feedback about a grade. Was extremely unfair when it came to the midterm and final. She exxpected so much within a small time frame which was so stressful.
Dr. O'Doherty was absent outside of zoom calls. Grading was clear, but assignment instructions were difficult to understand. Wrote my first memo and had no idea what to do, minimal explanation. TA's didn't knock marks for it being your first ever memo though. Exams were easy, take your own notes and prepare! Exam 3hrs long, in sections!
Tamara is by far one of the best profs I've had. She puts in her best during lectures and elaborates in a way that is easy to understand and incredibly engaging. I recommend that every crim student take her class at least once, she's so brilliant. The assignments are also very straightforward and as long you use her slides the exam should be easy.
Amazing professor who lays out everything that is expected clearly. Exams were open book and Q&A sessions were held before all exams and assignments. Also offered a syllabus quiz where, if taken, allowed a 48 hour extension on any assignment
I highly recommend Dr. O'Doherty and CRIM317. She brought in 4 guest speakers who were instrumental to our learning. Readings are interesting and essential to learning. Assignments require solid effort but if you take your time you can get a good grade. Come into this class with an open mind because you will challenge your biases about sex work.
I took two classes the other one was Human Rights, both classes were graded on papers. She sets out clear guidelines for her papers so if you just follow those you will do really well. She also really likes when you use course materials which is nice because then you dont have to do too much outside research. Just follow the guidelines.
A really great lecturer who provides accompanying notes. The course subject is a bit hard, but it's not unreasonable. Assignments & readings have helpful guide resources. TA Jocelyn is the nicest person in the world. I'm pretty worried about the final exam, and am not sure it will go well but I would still like the course if it didn't.
As a student at SFU we sadly have to expect the professors to teach from a liberal perspective. Tamara takes her liberal ideology and applies it to the law. This minimizes the ways you are able to look at the cases she assigns. I wish she could leave her politics at the door, and show the law from liberal and conservative perspectives.
Class was 'self directed' so what is the point of paying so much? Lectures were 15 mins long and exams were form book and nothing form what she posts. Memo 1 was unclear, lost majority of points there. Expects so much and teaches so less, the most difficult class ever! I never want to study such a course again, I would rather change my major.
Prof O'Doherty is a very caring and fair professor in terms of what she expects from her class. Two memo assignments, a take-home final exam and a tutorial presentation were great in terms of demonstrating your knowledge in the course. I thought it would be hard, but the course contents and Jocelyn (our TA) made it great and fun. Would recommend.
Tamara is a wonderful individual! However, she marks quite difficult and assigns many papers. Her lectures are also very heavy along with readings which make it impossible to keep up. I would advise not taking further classes with her if you want to boost your GPA.
Don't expect to get a good grade in this course if you aren't ready to work for it. If you show up, engage with the class material, do the readings and participate, you can expect to do very well. Probably the most I've "learned" in any CRIM course at SFU. Tamara truly cares about her students and the content she teaches.
Best CRIM class! Very knowledgable and passionate professor. Lots of readings and lecture topics, but she provides her own lecture notes to help you as much as possible and guide you on upcoming assignments. Loved having no midterm and a take-home final! Highly recommend.
The professor is nice but there are way too many reading. On a weekly basis, there's a 2 textbook chapters, 2 other chapters from other sources and 1 or 2 other sources with 10 pages of readings on top of online and in-person lectures.
Almost 100 pages of readings each week, which she expects you to complete. Her lectures are "highlights" of the readings, so you cannot rely on her lectures for thorough content. Papers require 5 course resources, aka the 40 page readings she assigns each week. Readings are not digestable at all.
Dr. O'Doherty was amazing! She made the class fun and engaging with weekly highlights lectures to make sure you understand the material. Also, the assignments are straightforward and easy to do well on if you take the time to do it. Overall amazing class and a great professor. Definitely recommend taking this class with her!
Tamara is a great prof, she gives great lectures and makes the course content interesting. Assignment and exam grading is pretty logical and straight forward. Theres a mandatory tutorial section with participation factored into the final grade, and youre expected to read the textbook before lecture (about 30-40 pages a week).
u guys....what was this grading on the theories quiz......i am so dishevelled. this is worse than scuderia ferrari's 2023 year....
As another person has already said, the quiz that was given out was ridiculous. Regarding the critical analyses, the marker and prof were very particular and strict with their grading. When the class averages for assignments so far are both low (quiz being 62% and paper being 75%) and no one got 100% on either, really makes you question...
the assignment grading system is so weird? the average for each assignment is so low. literally, anyone i spoke to said they did their best on the quiz, but the grades were disgustingly low...how did we go from 100% to a 55%???/ spoke to the TA only to find nothing.. the assignment on top? wHAT?
Didnt feel like I was taking crim, felt like I was taking a social justice course. lol. assignments are hard and ambiguous,
regret taking this class so bad bc wdym whatever we do, however much effort we put in, we still won't get a good mark? it rly feels like a social justice class rather than a crim one
It's ironic a class focused on social justice has prbly the most unfair grading that I have seen. Quiz was terrible, asked u to match random quotes to theorists, a few definitions appeared 1 time in the textbook, assignments r graded so hard, they penalize u for going over because ur references count as part of the word limit, terrible proff + TA
Tamara is a very kind prof, however, grades are based entirely off of papers which are marked very harshly. At least 100 pages of readings are assigned every week which is difficult to keep up with. Overall not a GPA booster.
after every thing i did, i would rather off myself than take her class again all because of her harsh grading scale
Wasted my summer semester on this class
I initially dreaded this class because I thought it was a cheesy social justice course, and because of my poor performance on the quiz at the start of the semester. It was worth 20% of our grade and should've been so easy if I studied. Luckily I did very well on the papers and final project. In the end, this class changed how I now think of Crim.
Tamara is an extremely caring and kind professor, though that does not take away from the fact that her course is really difficult. There were close to 100 pages of reading per week, and the assessments were marked extremely hard by the TA.
Her lectures were semi-interesting but the grading scale is extremely harsh. TA marks harshly for apparently no reason and gives useless feedback. Prof claims that doing everything required will result in a C. Wants students to climb ladders and go above and beyond. Stay away from the course.
she is approachable but felt almost impossible to get an A in this course. her grading system is not it, content was interesting but so many long readings and no matter how much effort i put in, TA only gives out B's and C's. TA is not helpful at all, even when i would take her feedback into account, she was never satisfied. 0/10 do not recommend
The class itself is quite interesting but the consistent poor marks from the TA and the prof made it feel not worth it. I tried to improve each week and they kept telling me to go deeper. It's impossible to critically assess a guest speaking lecture if the guest gives a very surface level/superficial presentation. Overall wouldn't recommend.
No tests, but rubric on the 7 papers was not very clear. TA marked hard and always expecting a deeper analysis which was impossible with the short word count. References from papers could only come from the required reading which turned into either reading 100+ pages a week or finding a section of the reading that fits to your thesis.
The content in this class is interesting but it is literally impossible to get an A. The TAs mark so hard and are always telling you to engage deeper but there is no room in the word count since reference list counts which is very unreasonable. I'm a straight A student and could not get more than a B on her assignments no matter how hard I tried.
The course content and the way the course was structured were very easy to understand, and I appreciate how savvy she was in creating the Canvas pages. Dr. O'Doherty is also very kind, approachable, and understanding. However, she and the TA's mark quite hard, so I probably wouldn't jump at the opportunity to take her again.
Tamara was a fantastic professor! She's very accommodating if have a disability. You can really tell she cares about the success of her students. She is enthusiastic and passionate about what she teaches so her lectures are engaging. Feedback from the TA is helpful. Fun class if you like law. 10/10 for me.
Took Tamara before for CRIM 230, was one of reasons why I wanted to take this class assuming she would do another amazing job.I was surprised how disorganized this class was, slides had less depth, she was less interactive and overall the class was not well put together. lots of readings and very little info in how to tie everything. Grader is hard
She is alright, her midterms and final is with notes but the assignments are graded hard. I would rate higher but she does not post her slides post or pre lecture.
Tamara's lectures are alright but nothing special. She often goes off-topic and rambles on. The assignments were fine up until the final exam. She expected us to write 2 essays closed-book while memorizing over 10 sources. We had to memorize quotes and all the authors which seemed quite excessive. No cheat sheet for the authors either. Not fun.
interesting course but such harsh grading and so much writing, the final is essentially memorizing formal essays (with intext citing) to write in person w zero aid which is not reflected of learning at all. this course is so difficult, she does seem to be trying to make it better compared to older reviews but this final is just borderline cruel
I took this class because of how great my experience of CRIM 230 was from her. However, CRIM 302 is a whole different story. Topics are quite difficult to understand and the slides and lecture do not give you a satisfying answer. Final is hard, must memorize 2 essays without a cheat sheet including authors. I personally dont think this is fair.
Amazing prof for this course! Lectures engaging, content pretty clear and interesting. Allows cheat sheets for tests ( midterm and final ) and tutorials were very chill with one presentation that's 5 minutes only - don't even have to present - you can upload audio of you talking. Would definitely recommend !
Surprised to see negative reviews, genuinely no complaints. Lecture topics were interesting and straightforward. Graded on two papers, quiz, midterm+final. Final is the hardest part as you memorize sources for two essays, though not difficult you understood the material. Very forgiving class, all work was spread out and she provided lecture notes.
She barely does any teaching, its all reading so get ready to read the textbook in detail yourself. Its super heavy material and there is only class when she's doing an assessment which is every other week...she doesn't do anything to bring the material together and you're stuck reading loads of legal information and trying to make sense of it
Course is challenging, due to the extensive volume of cases and legal terms. Can feel overwhelming given the amount of material. However Tamara played a crucial role in making these concepts more accessible. She breaks down difficult topics into digestible, manageable portions, and making the material reletable. I highly recommend Tamara as a prof
Tamara is so kind and respectful, really putting in the effort to support all students through extensions, advice, and feedback. Assignments were fun and engaging, and I genuinely learned so much in this course through the lectures, assignments, and readings. Overall very fun, 10/10 professor, would take a class with her again
