very very picky grader. This is a 200 level class and she treats it much like a 400 level class. Do not take as your first history class or you will grow to hate history.
I have been in the history department for 3 years now, and Dr. Whited was my least favorite Prof so far. I would take Bodle again before her. Pretty rough grader. Relates everything in the class to France. So if you are a fan of the French you'll enjoy this class. Otherwise it gets really annoying.
She is an awful prof. This class was impossible and the way she grades makes no sense. Avoid if possible
She was very nice and extremely helpful. Class was kind of boring sometimes and her grading is hard unless you know what she's looking for. She tries to make this class as easy as possible by giving study guides but studying for these tests takes a long time.
Another example of why the History department has the WORST faculty on campus! Harder than 400 level courses. 100% lecture/note taking all day every day. ONLY 4 graded assignments: 2 writing, a midterm, and a Final.
This might be the most boring class ive ever taken in my entire life. Just staying awake during class is a task in itself and taking notes is just another story. She reads straight from the projector and is soo monotone in her voice it makes you want to walk out the first day
She is a very helpful, and nice professor. Her tests were a little hard, but overall she explains everything in well detail.
Avoid with everything you have. She talks and talks and talks and never gets anywhere. The class is 100% notes and reading. You read the chapter, she tests you on it, THEN you learn about it. Horrible Teacher.
She is very hard...her tests are very hard as well. And also she gives you a different test every time just because the first test everyone did horrible on it. NOT KOOL!!! Stay away...DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
This class is definitely worthwhile. Dr. Whited is extremely well versed in the subject. The chronology of the French Rev gets a little lost in the analysis, but you'll feel like a French Rev/Napoleon expert when you're done. A LOT of reading and note taking, but if you ask questions when you don't understand you will truly benefit from the course.
Her class wasn't the easiest. Class was all mostly lecture and there is alot of reading. She is very approachable, and willing to help in any way possible. If you do the reading and pay attention in class you will be fine.
You'll never get out of class more than a minute early.. 100% Lecture. Hard Tests. Hard to enjoy the class as is, but it always seems like she's not interested at all...
you really have to read the chapters she gives you, it's a lot but it's worth it to pass her tests.
If you are not into history this course is hard. There is alot of reading, we had three books to read. Lecture is a must for the exams, lots of notes, and you have to read the chapter in order to do the essays. There are five in class essays, 2 out of class papers( 2 pages long), and two 50 question tests that are 200 points and a final exam.
not a fun class. nice lady, but lecture is so boring. 2 easy papers, but the readings are dry and not interesting ONE BIT. if you love history, take her..if not stay away
Great teacher. Put in the effort and you will do well.
she means well but sometimes shes just weird. I got a good grade in the class but I felt like I had to work wayy to hard for a required class.
I was a history education major before I took her class. Since then I have changed. She killed my love for history. DON'T take her!!! Unless your a favorite be prepared to fight to scrape by with a C.
Very hard and boreing, Ive heard of easier 195 teachers and wouldnt recomend her to anyone who isnt a history major. Inclass writings are very easy but there is reading that you must do to understand and the name of the class is misleading"history of the modern era"WWI is the most modern everything else that is covered is before that time period
Dr. Whited is the best teacher at IUP. I learned so much in the class. Everyone should stop whining and realize that this is college!
What can I say-It's the worst-Even people who know what they're doing get bad grades-she says she'll help you but it's not really great help-study guides and reading don't really mix with the quiz questions she asks-I failed-it sucks-I'm complaining because people who only need this for a requirement shouldn't have to go through burning fire for it
Dr. Whited is adorable. You can tell that she actually is interested in what she is teaching, which made it more interesting for me. Her quizzes and exams were hard, but you should do ok if you took the time to study. She offered at least 3 different extra credit assignments. She says "Ok" after every sentence.
Professor Whited is an excellent teacher. If you are lazy, take someone else; if you want to learn, take her class.
I would rather gouge my eyes out with rusty nails than take her again...not lie
I would not recommend this teacher unless you have no other choice. She is extremely tough. She does care about her students but doesn't know how to help them. She can be boring and believes in lecturing.
The class isn't a bad class, however the exams are totally ridiculous. They ask silly memorizations questions that you will never need to know. Other than that, her lectures are well planned and not bad to listen to.
pompous, very unorganized and soooooo boring
I love history, and she made me hate history, i have taken college level historys and Aced them but i struggled to get a C she is scatter brained and LOVES the french revolution, so if thats your thing, this is your teacher
Terrible teacher. Me and everyone in the class hates the class because it is so hard. Ridiculously hard exams.
She is the worst teacher I ever had. I had a problem with an online source for a test, she blamed the site instead of herself and it ruined my grade. She doesn't return e-mails.
If you need a HIST 195, DO NOT take this class. You take notes and read the book and still do horrible on the exam. Her lectures are boring. She is a nice lady, but her class is pretty terrible.
do not take this teacher unless you are a women. her tests are impossible even if you read the book take notes you have to be able to do your own research to even get a good grade. lets just say this the first test she had to curve it 50% so someone would be an A
had more work in this class than any other. Teacher blamed students for bad grades when ALL the students were getting bad grades.
Absolutely horrible. DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT take this class. Quizzes are worth 50 points!! Tests are redic. If it weren't for the kid sitting next to me, there is NOOO way I would have got a C. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
awful teacher, hard grader and super boring.. and im a history major!
Horrible teacher! I studied a lot and it never paid off.
I'm a history major and almost switched to another field because of her. She makes class as dull as possible and she is an awful teacher. I'd absolutely avoid taking her.
I have taken her for Europe after 1945 and was disappointed with the way that she grades essays, and the streak continues it is getting extremely aggravating and I will never while I am finishing college will take another course from her. She really needs to learn to chill out when it comes to grading and give people more benefit of the doubt.
Second time I've had her for class. Excellent professor. Challenging but in a way that helps you learn. Very intelligent, knows her stuff, and cares for students. Always helpful in office hours. Makes French history interesting. Class was jammed full of information. Exams were difficult but fun!
I like this professor and her class. She is hard but fair, and I didn't find her boring at all. Took her for 195 and French History class. People who are complaining might want to consider that they can't write a review without multiple writing errors--very telling of the students, and not surprising that they would rate Dr. Whited poorly.
The worst professor I've had so far at IUP. Her lectures are so boring and her tests are too hard. She is not clear when answering questions and gives stupid, useless notes. DO NOT TAKE.
Class is extremely boring and the only grades were the tests that were very hard even when studied for. Notes seemed like they were worthless. Didnt like her teaching style, wouldnt recommend her
I've had Dr. Whited for several classes, including HIST 195. Has high expectations in all classes and values class participation, especially thoughtful questions. Uses lecture outlines - just be sure to take copious notes! For 195: try the online study guides for the textbook. Kind and caring, too...she can be intimidating at first but is so sweet!
She is very boring. History is a strong subject for me and interesting, I rarely wanted to go to this class. Note taking is off the wall. They are useless and it's hard to follow them because she jumps all over. Not recommended.
This class was very challenging, but I learned so much about European history from it. I really want to take another class with her. Be sure you are a good writer if you take this course, because that is what most of the assignments entail. Also be prepared to read textbook thoroughly for quizes!
Dr. Whited made all course material available via moodle, so lecture outlines were always posted. There are 3 quizzes that can be challenging and the midterm and final are the same format. She is a tough grader when it comes to papers. Overall, she is a very nice professor
She talked entirely too much and did not make her lectures interesting. Going to her office hours are pointless because she doesn't really try to help. Her exams are worded completely different than her lectures making them impossible to pass.
Prot. Whited was a hard European History Professor. I found her lectures hard to comprehend as well as her tests. I do not feel she was consistent throughout the semester. We had study guides for every test except when we really needed one, on the final. I wouldn't take her.
I thought her lectures and notes were very much to write and comprehend, but if I got everything down okay and the notes were relatively easy to follow. She expects the class to answer many questions. Material is easily accessible on Moodle.
Ever meet someone that was so educated, but so out of touch with students? That describes Dr. Whited exactly. As a human being, she is great and actually has some great stories, though they typically revolve around France. As an instructor, I think she tries to make subjects interesting, but fails, and makes a history major want to change.
French Rev&Napoleon was best class I've taken at IUP and she is by far my favorite professor! I would recommend her to anyone. The most intelligent person I've ever met & has sincere care for students. Some writing assignments are difficult, and MUST read the book.If you keep up with notes readings & material all semester, short essay exams are easy
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. honestly, I don't listen to these but pleaseeeeee listen to this. DO NOT TAKE HER. she is dull, annoying, and not helpful. made me hate european history. and if you have a class after hers, she doesn't care, she'll run you late. AVOID AT ALLLLLLL COSTS.
I was actually looking forward to taking european history. I do warn you though this class can be extremely hard, I was fortunate enough to survive with a low B. Class is manditory and counts for 10% of your grade. She has 4 exams over the semester that are worded to make the questions very hard (drops the lowest scoring). I wouldn't recommend
This woman is great. I went to her office many times throughout the semester. She is so helpful and she knows what she is talking about in lecture. She gives great advice. If you are a history major, you definitely need to take her before you leave. But make sure you are prepared to work and learn!
Perhaps other majors require less intellect and that's why others struggle. I've taken her a few time and recieved A's. Her humor is unique, her grading is a little more challenging than average but not bad if you know how to read and comprehend. Her vocabulary is certainly above average, maybe that's the issue some of you are having.
one of my least favorite professors here. She gives quizzes on a chapter and gives you a study guide but it doesn't help. There is no use of her lecture slides and her midterm is all essay. Probably going to have to take this class again with a different professor.
One of the most helpful professors I have ever had. She is wonderful and kind.See her for help with your writing assignments, if you do this you will be fine. She will point you in right direction! You must read in order to do well! Do not do your assignments at the last minute, she is not dumb and she can tell who does their work and who does not!
Dr. Whited was a really nice professor. Get ready to read, but the readings help with the tests and she does tell you what is important to remember. Attendance is important since she does not post the Power Points online. Nice lessons, easy to understand.
I had Dr. Whited in the Honors College, and she was great! She assigns a lot of writing assignments, but returns them in a timely manner and with a lot of feedback. You can tell she really wants her students to work and learn, which shows that she cares. Also, if you ever need help, she answers emails and is there to help during her office hours!
Dr. Whited is a great professor one of the best at IUP. She's excitable and gets everyone involved.
I really love this professor. She is extremely intelligent and made the class even more enjoyable for me. Easy to talk to and gives great feedback! I had to purchase 3 textbooks for this course but she put a lot of our reading assignments onto Moodle which was really nice to have.
Dr. Whited is very average. She's an extremely nice person and a very sweet lady but I found myself kind of bored in her class, maybe just because I'm not a history fan. Definitely read everything she assigns because there will be detailed questions from each reading on the test.
I really enjoyed Dr. Whited's classes! She was very caring and positive. I feel liked I learned so much in her history class that I did not know before! If you have the chance to take her, do it!!
Dr. Whited is very nice and willing to help if you go to office hours. There is a lot of writing in her class. I only wish she did a new chapter every 2 weeks instead of every week. You have plenty of time to do the work, its just time consuming to read the chapters in the textbook.
DO NOT take this professor for HIST197. Her tests are near impossible and require about 10-12 hours of studying for a B. Her grading criteria is not clear and she is not helpful at all in office hours.
Honestly, this was an extremely interesting class with a the focus on WWI. She seems very well informed on the topic, and seems to really care. I will say that her tests are pretty hard; you definitely need to start studying the material as soon as you take the notes. Paying attention and studying will help you pass easily though.
Yes her class takes work but you will learn. Anyone disgruntled with the amount of effort just wants an easy A. Well if you actually do the work, it is an easy A. She is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the subject. Her instructions are clear and her feedback is helpful.
She was okay, but not my favorite. She gave WAY too much information at once. You will be taking a lot of notes. The study guides were no help to me besides the vocabulary words.
She's an okay professor. There is quite a bit of reading, but no homework. You definitely have to study for the tests because she can be a picky grader. She's fairly nice, but can be a little snobby if you don't pay attention. Be ready to take a ton of notes and remember a lot of facts about World War 1.
Great prof. Never had an interest in history before I took her class. Always available during office hours and super helpful, answers all questions. Reading outside of class but it's on the tests. Definitely makes you work for the A
I took HIST 197 because it seemed more interesting than another purely American history course. The class was easy as long as you did the readings, however theres tons of papers and tests and quizzes all the time. She often brought food to share. She also genuinely cares about the students. Shes understanding about reasonably missing class.
In HIST 197 Dr Whited's lectures were very well explained and easy to follow. She doesn't make us memorize dates. She gives us the big picture of historical events. The pacing of the class was great! She covered all the material that we needed to know for finals. She shows a few videos so it isn't all lecture. There is not too much homework.
I needed an online humanities class and chose this class on world war I. Read the bio on Dr. Whited and IUP is lucky to have her. The syllabus spells all the requirements out and the information for the quizzes, exams and discussions are right there. Great information on WWI and how it relates to present day events happening. Loved it!
Absolute favorite professor I have had at IUP. Some people definitely struggle with this course though, if you're not very good at making connections between readings this may not be for you. Overall, as long as you come to class you should be perfectly fine.
HIST of 19th c europe was great! She knew how to help us. Both midterms and finals were difficult but possible to pass. There's plenty of assignments to raise your grade. Classroom participation and attendance count for points. There were 2 essays for 150 points each. The textbook was very cheep to find online. Every other reading was free on d2l.
Dr. Whited is a great professor, but the class was just hard for me to follow. I often got lost and confused in her lectures, and I feel that we covered so much material in such a short amount of time. Nothing against her personally, you can tell she really does care for her students and their grades.
A nice lady and she does care about her students. Tough grader. but she did not make us have class on Fridays and instead did an assignment. Just keep up on your reading and assignment and you'll be okay.
Very boring class and hard to follow, she doesnt outline what shell test you on and provides too much information to remember. She also has a slew of assignments that have to be done which is hard to keep up with. Wording on exams is extremely abnormal and it is hard to understand what the question is actually asking.
Dr. Whited genuinely does care for her students and is very nice. However, it is a very demanding class. You have discussion posts due every week and it is a discussion-based class so you have in-person group discussions as well. There is a lot of reading in this class and you have to read them before each in-person discussion so you're not lost.
The class wasn't bad, I just found the topic pretty boring, so in a discussion centered class, it felt very long each day. She was not tough on grading.
The quizzes each week are unreasonably difficult and the way she words the questions is unnecessarily complicated. The questions are on minuscule information from the textbook and her lecture slides. I am generally a straight A student and worried occasionally if I would even be able to pass the class. Her expectations are unreasonable.
Her class was very difficult. The quizzes due each week were hard and so were her midterm and final. I usually get straight A's, but was lucky to get a B in this class. She rushes through the lectures and her study guides does not help much for the exams. The grading is very nitpicky for both the exams and the in-class essays.
If you don't listen to any other reviews, please listen to mine. You have an essay and quiz due every week. 3-hour written exams. Two reading requirements. Class is boring, and an intense grading scale. Out of 5 stars I would honestly only give her half a one. I do not understand why an online course is so hard.
This professor required students to buy a $55 course reader from the Co-op store that was filled with readings that could have been posted on D2L. There are no laptops allowed in class (even to take notes) and we cannot have cell phones sitting on the desk (even if they are turned off).I would not take this class again.
Took her for honors. She's very blunt and gives good feedback. However, she's just not the greatest. I don't know what it is, but she's not really caring. She's more caring about the work
