Best Prof ever!!!
Talks to fast. Seems intimdated by students. Nice lady.
Don't ever take a seminar course with her.uggghhh made 3 hours feel like 3 days. Gawd...
Don't take her class, she is the bottom of the UofM political studies barrel.
Best prof ever!!! Great lecturer. Very nice lady. She's the TOP prof in Poli Sci
Despite having notes in front of her for every class she always failed to answer students questions.
The best prof in Poli Sci. Knows her stuff and very very helpfull. Man she's good when she's interviewed on the radio or tv.
Smokin beauty, and smarts to match. Great prof, but Maclean still the best. Does speak a little too quickly
I'd place her somewhere in the middle
Too idealistic, pro-Israel / US for my tastes. Didn't like me talking to her about some topics (Israel/Palestine) so watch yourself.
Great prof (better than Maclean). Very balanced coverage of contentious issues.
unable to answer questions. edgy, awkward. try another prof.
Simply the best!
Very good prof. She was somewhat intimidating, even more than her husband, though she would deny it. Class was very fun, great text, and movies. No problem with tests, etc. but could use some work on outside of class personality.
very very boring to listen to
not good
Excellent teacher.
Not a good prof. Her presentations have a number of mistakes in them; she doesn't know what she's talking about half of the time, especially when it comes to current events.
Decent. The class wasn't very hard, but she didn't really know her stuff very well - lots of mistakes in her slides and knew nothing about current events.
awful professor, barely showed up to class in the second semester. waste of money, get someone else.
She knew her stuff rather well but never showed up to class and was unpleasant when asked about how certain grades were awarded.
AWFUL. I don't understand how other people actually enjoyed her class. She was a boring lecturer, gave us high school level assignments and couldn't explain to me why I received that grades I did, or how I could improve. Absolutely horrible.
Well lets leave it as she knew nothing about anything happening in politics, and actually asked the students if any were members of political parties. When one kid said he was conservative, the class moved to an interogation of why. Israel is evil, conservatives are worse, and god loves the greens. If you like this stuff, youll like this, if not pass
Good Prof. She was very knowledgable based on theory and her personal experiences. Classes wer very interesting. Lecture style was very clear and consistent.
I thought Prof Jacoby was fantastic. Lectures were easy to follow and understand and were very interesting; easy tests/exams; knows her stuff; encourages class discussion and debate; always willing to answer any questions.
Jacoby is awesome, always prepared and very helpful if you take the time to see her
Jacoby was the best teacher I have ever had. She was very clear and encouraged class discussion. I thought her tests were very straight forward and I was very pleased with her overall teaching skills.
Middle East Pol - well organized lectures but too fast (difficult to take good notes). The text is extremely detailed and tests are extremely short and specific making studying very difficult. Students can have good understanding of course material but still do miserably on tests. Would definitely recommend a different prof if you have the choice.
With all the bad ratings, I expected a horrible teacher. Granted, not the best prof but in general I was happy. Tests were super easy, and text book was an easy read as well. Got my first A in this class.
I was in her International Relations class, and I thought she was a great professor. She was very approachable, helpful, and made very fair exams. If you showed up, took notes, and re-read them before exams, it's hard to not get at least a B. Study, and it's hard not to get an A.
Presented both sides of the Arab-Israeli conflict fairly, I wouldn't call her biased, but her and the material were still from an Israeli perspective. Class explanations were clear but there were so many details and the book was awfully pedantic. Tests were incredibly specific. Marking was so haphazard. I did great but can't figure out why.
Excellent teacher. I was in her Int'l Relations class during the summer and got an A in the class. As long as you attend class, take notes & pay attention, and you won't need to read the textbook. Class discussions were extremely fun!
Completely awful professor. Marked exams frivolously and the questions asked on the exams were minute details she hand picked out of single textbook pages. Boring and biased. AVOID HER!
nice prof, but expects intro students coming out of high school to know about politics at a grad student level
overall a really easy class, but so boring to listen to her lecture, only prof i've had that i get sick of listening to after 5 minutes
I liked her lecturing style, very structured and thorough. Two term tests, one essay, and the final exam. Recording her lectures and re-listen were very helpful to study.
She is very structured, which makes taking notes easy. She tells interesting stories about the world. She's funny too. Take this course and you won't regret it.
Beware, don't be fooled by the relaxed environment in class. When exams/papers role around... be prepared to be violated. Tami is a nice person, quite interesting to listen to and has a depth in her knowledge regarding politics. However, she fails to realize that this is an INTRO class, not a 4th Yr course. Her examination methods are just unfair.
She is the best Professor I have ever had thus far. She is not biased, and does not favour. As long as you pull your weight, you will definitely get the grades you expect. She is very approachable. She is always ready to assist her students, at very short notice. She is very reasonable, and has a very good grasp of international relations.
Her tests/exam are very hard. Study hard and you will do fine. VERY clear when she speaks.
Lecture notes move at a very fast pace, and she does not post notes online so be prepared to not be able to focus on her words because you are too busy frantically writing ppt notes. Her tests are very difficult. She uses small sentences from the textbook as entire essay questions. No matter how much you study, it is hard to do well. Hard marker.
Worst prof ever!! Her exams are super hard and she marks so hard. Lectures are super long and super boring.
Awesome prof really. very clear when she speaks and wants to make sure everybody understand. read the books and you'll be fine trust me. her tests/exams are based on minute details you may have overlooked so watch out for that. she increases your interest in the subject so only if you're passionate about the middle east- take this course.
My favorite professor I've ever had bar none. Took a summer class and a fall she is completely clear and completely galvanized my interest in the subject. Excellent teaching style, very fair with her marking as long as you do your best and ask her for help she will do her best to help you. Highly recommend!
Tami is one of the best professors at the university. POLS1500 is an amazing course but be prepared to work hard. The readings are very necessary to do and coming to class is a must. There is also a lab for the class but its easy. She is very clear in her lectures and sparks great class discussion. Tests are easy if you know the material well.
I really enjoyed this professor and this class, she was a real gem. However it is not an easy A. There was lots of reading and if you don't keep up it's impossible to catch up.
I signed up because I believed what people wrote here about her being a great prof. WRONG. I took her class and she did not reply to any of my emails. You have to go and see her to ask questions. I did good on the test but she gave me a 58%. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF.
What a joke. For an online class she is unwilling to host office hours. No inclination to help students succeed. The first assignment was due in like a week from starting and was worth a grade point, what if students are transferring into classes during the revision period? I would stay away from her until she puts some thought into her classes.
She is really amazing and definitely knows her stuff. Final exam I found easier than the first two tests as the two tests included a plethora of miniscule details (still got an a and a plus). Very friendly and approachable. Fast lecturer, but interesting and she covers a lot of material. You NEED to do the readings for the first two tests.
She was a really good professor, definitely on the tougher side. Really helpful - she will adjust the class, the lectures, the notes, the reading, etc. All you have to do is ask her in class. She's very reasonable as well - she gave our whole class an extension on a paper bc we didn't have access to syllabus. Take the class, work hard, I got an A.
Favorite professor bar none. Take her summer classes and get to know her a little better, really wants students to succeed, extremely personable and tough but well worth the work! Really invigorated my interest in the subject.
Dr. Jacoby changed my life. Every complicated polisci concept was made crystal clear, she has the ability to ensure that you look at theories through a micro and macro lens, leading to a greater understanding down the line with other polisci concepts. I failed the first time in the Fall and got an A+ in summer when I applied myself.
She is nice. Really knowledgeable but its liks she doesn't really care for the class. Group discussions are super helpful for understanding the conflict and she is really nice person to discuss it with. Make sure to do the readings. Not possible to pass without it. Quiz and final are definitions from the readings only.
Good prof, however lectures were mainly from powerpoint slides which were not posted online. However most of the questions on her tests were not from these slides, they were mainly from the textbook.
She's a pretty decent professor who explains concepts clearly and in an organized manner. The textbook has been extremely helpful, therefore, doing the readings are crucial into doing well in tests. The slides she uses served as merely a guide on what to study and should not be completely depended on it. She's also quite approachable after class.
Talks too much. Basically gives you no information in class, just explains briefly the points that she has on her PPT from years ago. You have to read the entire textbook but would only be tested for the finer details. She doesn't seem very friendly either and can be quite condescending during class lectures.
Was a boring teacher and a boring class, she would often say things that were just factually incorrect. Not a hard class though if you study.
Be prepared to do a LOT of reading for this course. There is a lot of material and if you're not keeping up, studying for the exam will be a nightmare. The exam is not difficult, but guidelines on what would be on it were vague. Important to know all of the course material inside and out, as the questions are very specific and not all obvious.
Course itself was okay, and the tests were fair. However, I didnt like her, I found her to be rude and she showed no interest in her students. Essay comments only said what you did wrong, never anything you did right. Her responses to emails were rude. I asked if she provided a review and her response back implied I was lazy and should do the work.
Nice lady. Very clear when speaking and explaining. Her lectures facilitate taking notes. Her tests were fair and contained questions that you should know from sitting in lectures. Notes aren't posted online. She gives a reading for each lecture, which you don't need to read because she summarizes it in class. Mark the important definitions though
I really enjoyed my time in her class! She's very good at explaining things, and works hard to make a potentially dry subject interesting. TA's mark papers in this class, so I can't comment on marking, but her tests were incredibly easy, just textbook/lecture definitions. Final exam is definitions + an essay question. Would recommend!
Tami is easily one of the best POLS profs at U of M and but this IR Theory course in specific isnt the best course by nature of the fact that its cross listed as a graduate course so the expectations get split. she did the best she could given the circumstances. you just really gotta read for this course but its a 4000 level so thats to be expected
Had her for 2 classes this year and both were really good. In class (POLS1500) she is a good lecturer and begins each class with a musical intro. She is very open to in-class discussion, even mid-lecture. The online class (3342) was surprisingly straightforward and extremely informative. The video lectures provided were all well-done as well.
I thought she was great! I found that she mostly tested on textbook material, but it was not hard at all if you did the readings. Would love to take another class with her.
Very engaging lecturer who did a lot to make the course interesting. Her tests are basically just ten textbook definitions and not too challenging at all. Final exam was very fair. One of the better Poli-Sci profs at the U of M.
GREAT educator, deserves credit and recognition towards her continued efforts to teach students in olympic style. WELL DONE TAMI thank you
Loved her class, do yourself the favour and take her courses! Shes a quality educator who is over qualified but humble.
Too preoccupied with avoiding any offenses toward anyone's beliefs. Prefaces any statement with useless information and apologies. Lectures are simply definition of terms and not enough discussions and participation.
Professor Jacoby is a very good prof! she is super humble and genuinely wants you to get a good grade. tests were very easy, just read over the lecture slides and you should be good! Im definitely going to be taking more classes with her in the future.
Love, love, love this professor! I took an introduction to politics with her, and I enjoyed it so much it became my minor. I also took Middle East conflict with her and forgot I was a student because of how much I enjoyed the class! You need to put an effort, but she is not trying to let you down like some other politics instructors ...
Not a great professor, she admitted she disliked the class and teaching it. Graded our presentations without any feedback, essay feedback was all negative. The final exam was based on one question and expected a 7 page paper written within two hours. Condescending when you reach out for help and will sometimes ignore you completely.
Jacoby is a really great prof because she genuinely cares about the material she's teaching. I took an online class with her in Fall 2019 & hated her because she comes across as very cold, bordering on rude in her emails, but upon taking an actual in-class course with her, I found her to be funny and nice, but quite intimidating. Hard essay grader.
Ok here's the deal: don't take an online class with her. She's an amazing prof in-class, but not online. Online she comes across as cold and rude, especially in email correspondence. After I took 3340 with her online in the Fall, I was so hesitant to take 4580 with her in the Winter, but she's completely different in-person and extremely smart.
Great prof. Didn't love her at first because she does come off as kind of cold, but you warm up to her. Doesn't judge anyone on their political beliefs, but likes people to explain them. There are multiple choice tests that are from the textbook. Read it. Go to the labs, say something, easy grade booster. Also great way to learn to write a paper
Amazing professor with great lectures.
Jacoby is a great prof. I've taken 2 classes with her and will be taking 1 more before I graduate. She can come across as cold or abrupt when you first meet her & over emails, but she's actually really nice and funny, she just holds her students to a higher level than other profs I've had. Really hard to get an extension from, but fair grader.
Before taking her class, I thought she would be cold (based on comments I read here). She's the exact opposite: authentic, transparent, heartwarming. This prof has an AMAZING and cool life story, something out of a movie. She manages to summarize theories in a few sentences so write down every word when she does that. She gives quality feedback.
Tami has a somewhat dry sense of humor which can be interpreted as rudeness to some, but once you get to know her style as a prof she is great. She is so knowledgeable from years of experience as a prof and in the field (Middle East). Take any courses she offers about the Middle East!
Avoid this instructor at all costs. you can learn more from just simply reading the textbook and self studying. I found her annoying, arrogant and plain weird. I love political studies (its my major) and Ive taken many classes, but Ive never come across such a horrible instructor.
I really enjoyed Professor Jacoby's lectures and the content that was discussed. Discussions and topics in the labs were also very interesting. For tests and papers, she was very accommodating when it came to changes being made and corrections.
Her class is not well structured. The labs had a participation component, which was not clearly defined, so it led to everyone scoring a low lab mark. The essays were poorly graded, and the feedback simply seemed copy pasted for every student. The only upside is that she encouraged discussion in her class.
Very unclear grading criteria, inconsistencies throughout every aspect of the course. Harsh marker (A papers will get low B's in this class). Very brash, rude to an extent, and boasts about her "time in the biz." Plays music before class and dances to lighten the mood. Only submitted 20% of grades before VW deadline. Take class at your own risk.
Very nice person but grades so harshly. Online lectures were sort of hard to follow and went off on strange tangents.
Shes a tough grader and not a very nice person. She isnt considerate at all of your circumstances and doesnt seem to even care about how it affects your education. The content was fascinating, but shes not the best prof. I wouldnt take her class again and Im even considering a formal complaint to the department about her rudeness.
Really good Prof . Her lectures are entertaining , she's really herself when she's teaching . very knowledgable about the topics and caring !! she really makes an effort to engage with you . one of my best profs so far
Dr. Jacoby has been the best professor I have had throughout my University experience so far. Wonderfully put together lectures and clear outlines for what will be tested material. Lectures are very interactive and Dr. Jacoby is clearly very knowledgeable. Even if politics are not your thing, I highly recommend taking this course!
Tami is super engaging and though she is very open about her stance on subjects and her liberal views, she remains fairly unbiased and is not aggressive in sharing her views. There is no underlying bias in her content and she makes lectures feel welcoming to people on all areas of the political spectrum.
I loved Prof Jacobi and this was my favourite class so far BUT a couple things- if you don't like reading don't bother, you have to show up to class and grading can be tough. If you show up, try, and participate your grade will reflect it but you have to like the content. The lectures were super interesting though and easy to want to go to.
I have learned much throughout the course, mostly thanks to Dr. Jacoby's teaching. She connects experiences and asks thought-provoking questions to students to bridge gaps between concepts. She also responds to emails quickly, a huge plus! Lots of reading when you combine labs. and lectures, but it's "fun reading" if you're interested in politics.
She is a very amicable person but the toughest grader I ever had.
Really great prof, lectures are actually interesting as she lets the class talk a lot if they want, slides are just condensed textbook stuff. Papers can be hard if you don't read criteria properly and aren't precise, she is a rather tough paper marker but i wouldn't worry if you're a confident writer. The multiple choice tests are very easy though.
POLS 1502 is a very good choice if you are looking for an easy elective. Lectures were pointless as class time was mostly taken up by heavily biased discussions. Read the textbook and youll be fine. Very easy writing assignments. Dr. Jacoby is a good professor although heavily biased in the political sense. Easy A, just read your textbook
she's alright. Course aint tough but u gotta do the readings and watch the documentaries.
Dr. Jacoby is the best professor I have had at University of Manitoba. She is very passionate about what she teaches. She explains things in a way you can understand. I like her a lot. She gave me pep talks when I wasn't feeling confident. I would take this course many times over.
I loved her Terrorism and Political Violence course. She is very open to different ideas. She lets students express their views. And she is the nicest person you can meet in university.
I loved this class! Prof Jacoby is the real deal, very knowledgeable about her subject matter and able to break down complicated political issues in a way that makes sense. The class was well organized and her expectations were clearly laid out - not a class for slackers, but not "hard" if you do the reading and pay attention during lectures.
I loved this class. This made my university experience fulfilling. Other classes can be so boring.
Dr. Jacoby is awesome. She really cares about her students. Loved her lectures. I will take more classes with her in the upper levels.
The instructor is receptive to diverse perspectives and maintains a well-organized classroom. She treats students with kindness and fosters an accessible learning environment. By paying attention in class and completing the assigned readings, students can find the course manageable.
I absolutely LOVED Dr. Jacoby's Intro to Politics class. She doesn't care what your political views are; she just helps you to substantiate your arguments and back them up with facts. That was very liberating for me. I don't have the same views as all the woke students. But I still felt super comfortable. She's also very caring.
Professor Jacoby is an intelligent, caring and fair instructor who knows the subject matter well.. I enjoyed her lectures and recommend her classes. I will be taking more in the future with her.
I would recommend her. She is learned and gets a good discussion going in class. If you read the material it is not too hard. She is very supportive if you need help.
Dr Jacoby was my favorite professor! Her lectures were brilliant and always interesting. You could really tell she really cared about her students needs. Would love to take a class from her again!
Dr Jacoby is an amazing lecturer and was one of my favorite classes of the past couple semesters. Dr Jacoby was able to convey fairly complicated subject matter in an easy to understand way that made the class enjoyable and exciting. Cant wait to take her Arab Israeli Class.
I really quite enjoyed Prof Jacoby's class. She is super knowledgable in this field, and presents her lectures with no bias and with clear explanations. Everyone was welcome to share their opinions and views. She's also a fair grader. I learnt a lot!
I loved my class with Dr. Jacoby. Her intro class made me change my major to Political Science.
Dr. Jacoby is quite approachable and understanding, but is extraordinarily unclear with her grading. Papers and essays are not graded on whether the concepts are conveyed well-presenting but based on whether she likes it or not, with minimal feedback. Multiple choice tests are decently fair. Rude tone over email, but in person she is very kind.
Dr. Jacoby is a very thoughtful and kind person and she is very passionate about her work. She have a strong political idea of her own but doing very well in promoting different ideas and debates in her class. Read texts before lecture and attend all lectures if possible.
I love Dr. Jacoby's teaching style. She's very interactive and allows students to comment or question at any time during the lecture so we can understand better. She's very quick responding to my emails.
Very clear of the expectations of the course and the material. Very knowledgeable of the material. Responds quickly to emails and answers questions clearly.
Overall Dr Jacoby is knowledgeable on the subject. To succeed in her class, read, read, read the textbook, only information she cares about. Grading practice is questionable and very unclear. Has strong political opinions that appear to get in the way at times.
While I enjoyed the course I found the testable material to be on vague topics discussed rather than core material. You need to memorise everything in the text, including the side passages that aren't important. Do not rely on her power-points as I had contradictions between them and the text and she went with the text.
I really enjoyed this course! Instructions for one of the assignments were a bit unclear, however overall I looked forward the lectures in this class, and the discussions we had and the material was interesting. I found Tami's grading to be fair, and I'm hoping to take another class with her in the future!
Lectures are often disorganized and are often unfinished. 1/4th of the questions on the final were inapplicable to the scope provided beforehand. Feedback on written assignments/tests is vague and points are deducted for questionably. However, the multiple-choice assessments are very fair and easy. Wouldn't take again, but wouldn't purposely avoid.
Didn't seem to grade fairly on written papers, and fought grades from a D to an A.
Good overally
Pretty hard class, if you don't like reading or lectures without slides, do not take Tami Jacoby, you will not pass. She is an incredibly tough marker, and you will need to work as hard as possible.
where do i even begin, lectures are so boring sitting there just listening for 45min. might as well just go home to take a nap instead. her lectures don't match with the textbook which made quizzes harder, she didn't answer emails and was not helpful, overall wouldn't recommend wasted my time for a poor grade go with a different prof.
Amazing lectures, very open to reevaluating work and admitting when she's wrong. Attending lectures was essential, but the pace can be a little at times. Sometimes a tough grader.
Dr. Jacoby is a passionate and thought-provoking professor. To succeed, read the textbook thoroughly and engage in class discussions. Unstuck study was a great resource for preparing for exams. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
