Tests and programs are very easy, however she seems very nervous when she lectures and becomes unclear at times. She's very helpful if you visit her office hours though
Great teacher, had hero for Intro to C. I already pretty much knew C before this class, but can tell that someone without knowledge in C can do well in this class because of her. She always asked if a person understood the material. She stated over and over, "I'm paid to teach you, so if your having trouble ask me." Great teacher overall!
awesome teacher. very cool person. i took her for operating systems and computer animation. very clear and grades very fairly. i would recommend her to anyone
Her class starts off really easy, with the first programming assignment, but after that, it goes way beyond what an intro class should be like. She uses codelab as an instructional tool. Sometimes before the exams, 'being ahead' is actually required, because she goes beyond codelab. Way beyond. Also, her exams are written exams...
SHE IS AN ANGEL!!! don't listen to the guy below me because she is an amazing teacher. Very nice, patient, and VERY LENIENT!! she is a God send in my eyes! I hear some of the other programming teachers arent that good but I would highly recommend her. pay attention, and do code lab and you will do fine. I loved this women and enjoyed having her!
To the comments below: COP2220 is a weed-out class, computer science can be very hard. What you'll see in real life is much harder than codelab. She is knowledgeable, friendly, and lenient. I actually don't like the fact that she goes too easy on Seniors, but she is worried that we won't understand, so she takes her time with us. Not a bad thing.
Great teacher and really cares for the students. Even though attendance is not mandatory, she wants the studetns to show up and learn. Recommend to everyone.
A poster was right about how she goes beyond codelab. Programming is about putting things together and it can be very difficult if you have no experience and don't put a lot of time into this. Her pace was fair, assignments were OKAY. Tests written tests. I think if you go to her office hours you can pull off an A, if you need the help. She is nice
One of the best professors I have ever had. Very helpful, very straight forward. Was not difficult for me having been a programmer for a few years but does require work. If you are not a programmer, this course WILL be work for you. It is hard. You will need to study! Does not "use" the book as she has her own examples but book can be helpful.
Great instructor, great attitude, relaxed in class, and very helpful. It wasn't a tough subject for me, but I know she always made herself available to those who needed extra help. I had a fam emergency halfway through the semester and she was very accomodating with my grades. Awesome instructer!
She's a pretty good professor. The first half of the semester is really easy. Then it gets pretty difficult fast with Semaphores and monitors. It is an easy B class.
Easy class if you have any prior knowledge of programming. I'm sure its just as easy without. Tests are simple, homework is irritating but not plentiful. Tami is very nice and funny.
Operating systems was my second course with her (I had her for Intro to C and it had really solidified my interest in the subject). She's a great instructor, very interested in the subject, and she has a relaxed and fun attitude. She definitely keeps it interesting and if you keep thorough notes, you should do fine.
Records lecture for reviewing made this 100% better for me. She is very clear and class is more entertaining then most others. Study a good amount and anyone should be able to get an A. Test are not hard but they do make sure you understand the material not just remember.
Ms. Sorgente (Tami) is one of the best computer science educators I've ever had. Her and Joy helped convince me to make computer science my career.
She's not awful but.. she's not an amazing professor by any stretch. She seems frustrated and uncomfortable teaching. She snaps at people when they ask questions. Refuses to talk about how the material relates to anything outside the class. She seems like she doesn't like teaching the material. Maybe she was just having a bad semester.
She is a great professor and explains things very well. If you go to class you will learn everything you need to and will never have to open the text book. You have to enjoy programming though and if you don't you probably shouldn't be taking the class.
Nice, but very disorganized when it comes to teaching. Halfway through a new topic she'll be teaching she'll say "& that's how you don't do it" but you've already spent ten minutes writing down the way you thought it would be. PAY ATTENTION in class - labs & MPL is easy but the programs require thinking. DO NOT HELP SHE COUNTS IT AS CHEATING.
I typically get an A in every class. If I am not maintaining a 95% in the class I change what I am doing. This is a fully online with min. lectures (30min per week on average) Project is hard, tests are murderous. I look up every answer online if I don't know it outright and still get C's and D's. I don't know how anyone can get an A. GL
Good professor, take good notes as she gives the answers to most assignments in class. Pretty easy class overall if you pay attention and read the book ahead of time.
She is a great Professor but she takes forever to grade the assignments.
Her lectures are very disorganized. She'll jump from topic to topic and sometimes lose her place. She's nice and approachable. I did not enjoy her class because I felt that she gives you the answers for most assignments rather than actually teaching you how to achieve the answers alone. This class can be difficult especially for non-programmers.
I took COP 2220 with tami and she is a horrible teacher of programming. Don't get me wrong she definitely knows her stuff just doesn't know how to teach it. Also, the final for this class was a hand written final for computer programming... we never wrote our code before the final. The final was also 44% of your grade!!
The final is hand written code. She's not good at teaching code at all. She definitely knows her stuff, but she's not good at teaching what she knows. The final is 44% of the class grade. Legit most failed because not once was program handwritten, nor did she teach us how to take on real world problems like the ones on her test. First failed class.
tami is sweet & all but she really can't teach. she basically gives you the code answers in class & that's the main reason i passed. the final was the hardest thing EVER, but this is coming from a non-programmer. Was a computer science major when i took this class but switched bc of this. I put in so many hours into this class it sucks.
I walked into this class knowing nothing about the language or comp sci in general. She gave answers in class and although her lectures weren't the best, there was a ton of help and tutoring resources. Its a tough class but i got a lot out of it, it was worth it and Sorgente is definitely better than other profs teaching C according to the tutors
First of all if you skip the class you cant pass . she teaches the lessons so fast. She knows her stuff very well , but she seems like doesn't care. you will get 4 or 5 quiz and midterm it's all on online . WARNING !!! FINAL EXAM IS HAND WRITTEN EXAM. Her FINAL IS so HARD. so think twice before you pick the class with her
Never program in my life before this class, but I got an A. Just do whatever she telling you to do, go to class, take notes, practice the codes, and don't copy someone else's work. The final is in hand writing, I didn't do very well (85% or something), but I got full credits in all the assignments and above 90% in quizzes. She's a very cool lady.
really bad professor, don't take her.
All of the programming assignments, quizzes and the midterm do not prepare you well enough for the final which is worth 44% of your grade, if the final is handwritten the midterm should be as well. She is always in a rush when she is teaching and it looks like she doesn't care. If there is another professor offering this class take it with them!
She lets all of her TAs do the work and when we come up to her office hours for help, she tells us we have everything we need. Why do you think we went in the first place smh she doesn't help with homework and she hardly gives any online lectures
She's very nice and her lectures are engaging. The labs/quizzes aren't difficult because she goes over everything and basically gives you the answers beforehand. The final exam is hard but she gives practice problems that are VERY similar to ones on the exam so it helps a lot. I've never programmed before in my life and I found her class easy.
I've never programmed before this class but I found this class to be an easy A. Tami provides so many resources to help with the assignments and she's always quick to respond to emails. If you want to pass, take good notes, practice coding, and watch her videos. Also, she gives you a full page of helpful notes that you can use on the final exam :)
Good: Her lectures are helpful, and directly relevant to the hw/quizzes. Responds fairly quickly to emails, and will provide good feedback/answers if you ask specific questions. Bad: Final is crazy difficult, & worth 40% of the overall grade. I thought I knew what i was doing in class, but the final took me from almost 100% in the class to a B+
Tami is a bomb professor/ hard grader. She uses simple illustrations to teach difficult concepts in computer science. To teach the code for the class she uses games and real life stories. Tami jokes with the students. She is good looking, and definitely hip and with it. To do well in this class, like she says code, code, code. And go to the tutors.
The class was very work heavy. There is always something due at the end of every week, which can be annoying, but it's mostly was easy work. The biggest issue I had in the class was the CPU assignment. I started early, but I still didn't get it to work. Nearly , everyone failed that assignment. Just get ahead of the work and you should be fine.
Final is worth 40% of the grade, all 3 tests including the final are answered in executable code. All of the programming assignments and quizzes just seemed to be practice for the final and 2 tests. Otherwise, Professor Sorgente responds very quickly to questions and TAs grade assignments within days.
Tami is a very kind person, but she is a tough professor. Implementation was lacking. Fail the final, fail the class. Tests were difficult and on paper when we should have been using an IDE. To be fair, I think COP 2200 "Intro Prog in C" is a class to weed out many CS major wannabe's. If you can make it thru you'll be fine in next classes.
She's a great professor! The lectures are clear and she provides a lot of examples. I got good feedback on my homework and quizzes. The few times I needed to contact her, she responded fairly quickly. The class was pretty easy, but make sure to monitor your time on tests. I know that got a lot of people during the final.
You really have to show up and pay attention in this class. If you take good notes and practice at home, you'll do well. Professor Sorgente is really cool though, she doesn't take sh*t from anyone. She's kind of harsh though in the sense that if she thinks you asked a stupid question, she'll make you feel dumb for it. She is very good at explaining
Excellent choice to learn from. You cannot go wrong choosing a course with this professor. Can not wait to take her for other courses.
Super nice professor, class is a bit challenging but she's there always to help. Gives a decent amount of notes and time for assignments, but you have to go to class and put in some effort.
Took for Computer OS online. Highly recommend. You can find her lectures on YouTube. It will be two 10-15 min lectures/week, plus textbook reading. Straightforward grading criteria on all assignments/projects. You have 10 days or more to complete assignments, longer for projects. If you do well in self-paced online courses, this Prof is for you.
The final exam is worth 40% of the grade and that is not a good thing. That is too much.
I had an 85 in the class until the final exam. the final is 40% of your grade fail it and you'll most likely end up with a D. She is a tough grader will take points for not following one on one to what she asks. I heard she is nicer in her in person class. Be careful to get help from other students even on one thing she will count it as cheating!
her final for the online class is brutal I heard she did a fill in the blank for her in class students but yet for her online students she expected us to fully program code for all the 8 questions. Please do not take her my only advice if you have too take her is kiss up to her since the beginning of the semester and get help early on.
By far the hardest class Ive ever taken. I took this class fully online and it took up all of my time. Final is worth almost your entire grade. Final dropped my grade 10 points at the end of the semester.
Good lectures, relevant examples, and is quick to respond to emails of you ask specific questions. had her for multiple classes and she is a good prof. Yea her tests are hard, she is not an easy A but you will learn a lot if you actually try. Intro to C is a weed out class, hence the complaints about the final. Want to learn CS topics? Take her
Super nice and helpful. The class was somewhat challenging but Tami's online lectures were very clear and easy to understand. She also provided lots of example problems that are similar to the problems on the exams. The majority of your grade comes from the midterm and final but if you put in the effort and study, the exams shouldn't be difficult.
Tami is amazing! So kind and helpful. Her lectures are engaging and she uses a lot of examples to help students understand the material. Her exams aren't hard if you study and practice her example problems (which are almost identical to the problems on the exams).
Dr. Sorgente is one gem of a professor. She is very sweet and she has a lot of resources to help you understand the material. If you have trouble with homework, go to her office hours or email her! She will help you out. Her quizzes are exactly what she covers in class and her final is not as hard as long as you keep practicing what she teaches.
The professor makes great lectures, powerpoints, and notes and you can choose any of them to learn the material well. The homework gives a lot of feedback and is overall very helpful. There are also sample exams provided that are very helpful, and any other issues I had with assignments the teacher helped walk me through them.
Hands down, one of the best Computer Science professors at FAU. Gives plenty of resources and examples to do good on homework and exams. She's also easy to reach by email at any time!! If you want to learn how to program, this is the professor.
Sorgente was a great professor, definitely would take again. She provided her own notes for each chapter, videos walking through coding assignments and reviewing class material. Quizzes were very fair and lots of practice material was provided for exams. She has a great vibe as well and is very nice.
Professor Sorgente is a very tough grader. Even though she makes mistakes in her lectures, she will not forgive any mistakes on the quizzes or exams. For the quizzes or exams, you will not be using a compiler which can make it quite difficult to spot errors. If you don't practice coding, you will not pass. She knows her stuff well .
Took for introduction class &she was not accommodating at all. Example: she opened an exam to be taken from 1pm-9pm on a certain day. I work all day &my schedule varies. That day I worked from 10am-7pm which only left me with 2 hours to get home & take my exam. She would not extend it. Lectures are okay. Lots of options& tutoring opportunities.
Sorgente was wonderful for foundations - but for operating systems, there's lots of work and it's very stressful. We have quizzes, discussions, recurrent group assignments doing mini research, another recurrent group assignment for cpu scheduling (coding scheduling algorithms), 3 individual homeworks, and 3 exams
The content of the class is not too difficult, however, the amount of work for this class is absurd. Had more work and dedicated more time to this class than the other four classes I was taking.
Dr. Sorgente was nice. She canceled an exam we did well on because some people cheated so our finals were graded heavily. The exams were all open book which made it a lot easier in case you forgot a piece of code. Exams were tough, but not too bad. Our projects were a lot of fun and she had YouTube videos that walked us through them step by step.
Amazing professor. Willing to help with anything you needed and provides awesome lectures. She writes out majority of the programs you write since this was an intro class so you could hardly go wrong. Awesome professor and fun class.
I didn't find Tami to be quite helpful. She accuses you of cheating over the littlest of things, even for asking simple questions. And she fails to answer properly. I can't speak for everyone, but for me, she was extremely difficult and had quite a temper.
Got an A in COP2220 online. 50% of the class is quizzes/projects/mylab that you could get 100% in everything if you tried but it would take effort. The other 50% is exams (10/10/30). She grades easily I would say, but overall its a lot of work for one class.
took cop3014 fall 2021, and cop2220 in spring 2021, both with tami. she has SO much to help you learn, like lectures every monday, supplementary material/videos, videos for the programs, practice code, everything. and on exams, she also just cares if you GET the material, not if youre perfect. def will take her a third time.
Took this class in Fall 2021. Great explanations on projects. Lots of materials to reference, lots of assignments. Lecture videos were on YouTube and were usually from past semesters (i.e. 2017), on ppt with handwritten explanations, not very code-inspiring. Honorlock used for exams. Mike Dane & BroCode YouTube channels helped.
Awful! I don't understand why so many people like her, I think she was very rude and condescending. She would accuse you of cheating over trivial things. She should stick to research and leave teaching to the professionals.
This class is poorly structured and graded by too many things the main problem is that this is an easy class but she made it hard with several projects tests and assignments. There is a scheduler assignment that requires programming and she has not taught any programming. i don't know how she expects this to be done.
She was always helpful and responsive to e-mail. She also provides lots of extra support lectures and office hours.
She is a good professor, sometimes her videos are kind of weird but a quick google search will help you understand, programming isn't easy and needs time, if you study and actually learn you will have no problems with this course.
Professor Sorgente truly cares but expects you to put in work. She is willing to help and discuss any topic or question you may have. Tests are not the easiest but programming is a subject that must be truly learned as it is technical and keeps getting more complicated. Do your work, go to class, do your assignments get your A. Simple.
Tami is great for this course, has great video w/step by step on how to do projects- sometimes can be confusing as she makes slight changes to instructions. Tests are very exhausting for beginners. Material covered helps a ton w/ data struct course later on. Worked on some cool projects, I do feel like she spoon fed us, but how else would we learn?
I took this class as a pre req so i didnt really care for trying. But she is a good professor and cares for student's grades. Tests were difficult and usually reflected specific codes in the programs we did as hw
Sorgente is a great teacher, but she does tend to get off-topic sometimes. Her class is composed of MyLab, programs, quizzes, 2 exams, and a final. It's 500 points total (150 is finals) and she offers 14 points extra credit. Attendance isn't mandatory and she posts videos on her canvas explaining topics. A cheat sheet is allowed for exams :)
Great professor. I had prior coding experience, and that may influence how difficult this class was for me; however, if you pay attention to her lectures or even just teach yourself a little, you will be fine. Open notes, so she tests for understanding the logic rather than memorizing the syntax. Was very kind when I had weird circumstances.
CPU scheduler is not that hard, it's simply too much work. It needs to be split into 2 parts, because all students do it at the last day no matter if the prof. extends the deadline. It is an outrageous amount of work, because there's like 2-3 assignments in one. Also the homework took a lot of time to do as well. Please find some way to simplify!!
Reuses video presentations from years ago that dont align with the assignment shes given. Be ready to teach yourself as shes not very clear in explaining or clarifying. Her in person lectures are very uncomfortable, I feel like I cant speak or ask questions because when I do she answers like I have her experience and should know the answer.
The concepts are hard enough but she has you do these exercises that are extremely time consuming and difficult. What's more, there's like 3 tests. Discussion posts not exclusive to her but no one ever reads them.
I liked that the course was very organized - everything was posted at the start of the semester so you could plan out when to do assignments. She provides tutorial videos and templates to help get you started on assignments. Quizzes and exams aren't too bad if you pay attention in class/read the material posted on Canvas
Mrs. Sorgente lacks professionalism and dedication to her students. She canceled six classes and office hours during finals week, demonstrating a lack of concern for their education. Her disorganization, condescending attitude, and lack of effort in teaching make it difficult to learn from her, even though the material is relatively easy.
The only concern I have is that her videos are just extremely hard for me to understand, as she goes on tiny rambles randomly and I lose concentration instantly. What's more, the cursor is hidden on videos so it's hard to know what she's referring to when talking on the videos. Not too bad tho.
Tami is a great teacher. She is very enthusiastic and knows her material well. MyLab was fun and the projects are a great way to learn about the material we go over in class. Tests were fine.
The contents of the class were a little hard especially in the latter half although if you are able to do the homework you should be fine. Good teacher, very available, and will help students.
Prof Sorgente == 'Excellent'. Lectures are super accessible (Canvas & YouTube), & help w/ HW & studying for exams. Sorgente is super responsive, detailed, & clear via email - major plus! Homework divided b/w writing programs + algorithms; and Pearson lab questions (unlimited attempts) Grade well divided b/w HW, quizzes, & exams. Def recommend! A+
LOTS of work, material is OK/acceptable, professor is good, totally do-able but expect to work it
She is very nice and helpful if you email her. Her study guides are NOT good for the final. Lots of resources, but only one of them may be relevant to your assignment. She is fair and clear with grading. Overall, great professor.
would not take her online, you get these 15-minute max videos as 'lectures' and homework problems that are more detailed than her videos.
Professor is decent but would not take again ever. She gives lectures but all they go over is the previous homework or the homework after. There is no type of actual "notes" or lectures that she does for you to be able to actually learn the foundations of coding. (PS: she gives a lot of homework)
You have to teach the material yourself or go to tutoring if u want to pass, and also despite this being an online class she implement labs with mandatory zoom meetings that count for a grade, which for my case was inconvienient bc what is the point of an online class if there is a meeting for it so beware
Takes marks off assignments for tedious things and Is really picky when it comes to grading
Professor does not give lectures, everything is on YouTube her videos are very hard to follow and her tests are incredibly difficult and verbiage is terrible. course material is straight forward, sample questions for exams and actual exams do not align at all. When giving feedback she does not help with anything only tells you to refer to samples
Do not take this class if you want to learn the foundations of coding. Professor is all over the place and lectures were not useful enough to take decent notes. Sample exams did not reflect the actual ones. A lot of homework it felt like things were due before it was taught. I would avoid unless you already have experience with C.
If you put in the work, you'll end up will a good grade. The workload was good to help understand the material without being too intense. Sorgente lectures is a hit or miss, but there's lots of supplementary material. Her grading can seem a bit harsh, and she doesn't award points back if you discuss during her office hours. I'd still retake her.
The toughest graders here at FAU will take points away if you don't code to her specific liking even if your program and her program perform the same functions. Very disregarding towards student's problems (she would not extend a student's deadline even though he showed medical proof that he was in a car accident). Overall horrible. Just terrible.
Professor Sorgente is exceptional, offering abundant resources for her challenging class. She extends deadlines based on student feedback and provides live and pre-recorded lectures, PowerPoints, summarized PDFs, a textbook, and homework with additional textbook answers that help students understand the material.
Course is difficult, but she provides many resources (lectures, examples, slides), is very accessible, and teaches to the best of her ability. Homework are graded by TAs, but tests are generous and forgiving as they are graded by her. She seems to genuinely care about her students. I recommend you take her for this course.
Her tests and exam instructions are extremely confusing. If I could go back in time I would NEVER take her. This is the worst run class I have ever taken.
This course is one of the hardest in CS. Tami has her own method which is really helpful, but also you will need to rely a lot on Indian youtubers to actually digest everything. She's definitely one of the best professor at FAU.
Material was straightforward but her grading methods are awful. Programs and labs are straightforward but exams are pretty harsh if youre a beginner even tho this is an intro class. If you have coding experience, you'll probably be fine, but if not, take someone else cuz I wish I did. Many of her instructions/lectures are difficult to understand.
I don't know why this professor has a 4.5 on here. She is terrible at teaching the fundamentals of C. Very nitpicky grader and condescending, lectures were not helpful at all for learning the material. you will rely heavily on youtube, avoid at all costs unless you have prior knowledge of C.
nahnahnahnah
I had Sorgente for intro to C in Spring of 24, good all around. The rubrics for assignments were very clear, she let us bring a page of notes to the midterm and final.
Theory of Computation is probably one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. The class had assignments due every week and if not an assignment it's a discussion. The midterm and final are both 50% of your grade. She makes the class unnecessarily hard but she cares if you put in the effort.
Tami teaches very well- all lectures on youtube, gives a lot of hw, test is basically the hw, if u practice then u'll do well, if u have questions she's available for office hours, nice notes, quizzes are multiple attempts, tests are on honorlock
Very straightforward with what she asks of her students. And gives enough extra credit opportunities. The fact that she also has a you tube playlist of the playlist material that she teaches is also very helpful. Not much to say on this other than she's pretty good. A little tough for cop 3014 but fair.
The class is tough, but Unstuck study can really help with study prep. Lectures are confusing, so self-teaching and tutoring are a must. Still, if you put in the work, you can get through it.
Sorgente is a good professor who gives you lots of way to learn the material (live & recorded lectures, textbook, etc). The material is tough, and you do need to take time digest the material.
COP3275 C++ class, the one thing i didn't like is that for the exams you need to write down your code without a editor and she takes off pts for little things. On paper for in-person, on canvas with lockdown browser for online. Some people fail the class and theres no EC or curve. I would only take her class again if i had no better options.
I took COP 3275C Which is an intro to C++ class. Personally I enjoyed the class and did well. It pretty project heavy but they aren't to long.If you have no experience with C++ you will struggle and should definitely invest time into learning the basics of C++. If you know C++ the class will be a breeze.
She was my only option, but I'd never take her again. She's VERY VERY rude to students and TAs. She's so hung up on people using ChatGPT and cheating on tests, she made us code on paper for the midterm and final, which is crazy and not fun AT ALL. TAs are strict with grading the 10+ assignments assigned to us for no reason, which was annoying.
Grades homework and tests way too hard. Her guidelines are extremely confusing. She is also extremely particular about the way students should code and what compiler they should use. There is also a mandatory lab session you have to sign up for which is a 3 hour session taught by one of the TA's
I also took COP2220 with sorgente, She nice when it come to giving feedback and grading. She's real straight forward. COT4420 probably one of the hardest class i took. I was on the verge of failing, on the final I ended up acing the exam. She provide good study guides. Easy to communicate with.
Her C++ class is all it takes to understand the basics of that programming language. She gives homework and quizzes every week, but she makes up for it by not having a class(during the summer). Her exams are difficult since you have to write the code in text. She says it's fine to watch videos or other sources, but she doesn't want AI in her work.
Extremely difficult in grading. Her guidelines are extremely confusing. She is also extremely specific, regarding the way students are expected to code and what compiler they should use. Also, comes off as condescending and very quick to scold.
The homework is a chore, exams/quizzes are easy. The concepts are simple, yet most of your time will be spent interpreting her asinine instructions to figure out how to appease her. Code will compile, use relevant concepts, & follow her prototypes, but she'll give you a 60%. If you're experienced, the exams and quizzes will make up for it at least
