Best prof I've ever had! She actually cares about her students and takes the time to thoroughly explains what she is looking for. Also, she gives helpful tips to succeeding in university. Tamie is very passionate & enthusiastic about what she teaches and makes the class fun by bring in guest lectures. Sweetest lady I've ever met and super fun class
Tamie is the best prof I have ever had. She truly wants you to succeed, and will give you all of the help you need in order to do well. She clearly explains everything she is looking for & gives helpful tips for studying and writing papers that you can use in all aspects of your university career! I highly recommend taking a class with her.
Lecture notes are useless yet the whole exam made from lecture notes
Tamie is one of the nicest professors I've ever had. She offers clear explanation and tips for the final term paper. The midterm + final would be easy for you if you studied. Her lecture notes are REALLY helpful in my opinion but a laptop is definitely needed for note taking b/c she goes through her powerpoint slides quite fast. Highly recommend
Her lectures are tedious and she goes FAST so I highly recommend a laptop. The textbook was only necessary for the online tutorials. The midterm + final were 80% verbatim ppt notes, 10% tutorial notes, & 10% textbook. The paper topic sucked, but easy & grading was fair. Super nice, offers study tips, & VERY generous with her time if you need it.
Great person nice lecture
Very interesting lectures
Never had any problems about Tamie and classes
The best professor ever! Tamie is the only prof I know who genuinely wants to see her students excel. Her teaching style is innovative, creative, and clear. Used her advice throughout my undergrad career and experienced much success. HIGHLY recommend - it will not be an easy course, but definitely worth it. Would take any class with her again!
If you are looking for an engaging prof who deeply cares about her students while being enthusiastic about the material - Tamie is your prof. To do well - visit her office hours and ask for her expectations.
Clear grader and amazing lecturer
Best instructor I have ever met in the criminology department. She is extremely caring, and passionate about criminology. Her exams and grading criteria are straightforward and easy if you study and review. She genuinely wants her students to succeed and do well in class. Would take her again 100% for sure!!!
Tamie is a very respectable and caring prof who honestly wants her students to succeed. However, she has very high expectations from her students. The tests and paper in this class were absolutely brutal. You literally have to memorize hundreds of pages of notes to get a good mark. The average for the midterm was 55%, and she expected a 75%. Eh.
Tamie is a lovely lady, just absolutely tough on tests. Take a class with her if you're taking a light course load because she's gonna make you work for it.
Tamie is a very caring person. But her grading expectations are very high. Directions aren't entirely clear either. The text for this class is also brutal and hard to read. Tests are all multiple choice based on very specific details with answers that all seem possible.
The most caring prof in a along, long time. Exams are based on specific details and all multiple choice. Two long research proposals, however she always has extra office hours. Reads every bit of your paper and gives feedback. Tough grader, but if you follow her and do as she says, you'll get the desired mark.
Tamie is so lovely and helpful! Exams are a little heavy (CRIM220 is not easy itself anyway), but you will be fine if you have studied enough. Definitely would take with her again!
Dr. Fennig is genuinely a caring professor who wants to see the best in all of her students. But, she is a very TOUGH marker. You have to memorize the readings and her lecture notes word for word in order to do well on the midterm and final exams. Participation matters in tutorials where you will also be preparing a presentation thats worth a lot.
One of the nicest profs I ever had. So incredibly helpful and hardworking. However, she has very clear expectations and the class is a lot of work.
She definitely cares about her students success, class is fairly lecture heavy but she has good slides and doesn't rush. Lots of reading, id stay 40-50 pages a week sometimes more. Overall kinda boring class but definitely not the worst.
The best professor at SFU, she is honestly so caring and wants her students to succeed. As long as you do the readings and pay attention in lecture, you will be fine. Highly recommend visiting her during office hours as she is very accessible outside of class. If you ever have the chance to take a course with Tamie, do so because she's the best!
Outstanding, phenomenal, caring, remarkable. I absolutely loved Tamie and her hardwork and passion for her students to succeed is exemplified through her teaching, marking and help she gives. She literally sets you up for success and is an absolute gem. I can go on and on to talk about her. This is my first review of a prof in my 4 years at SFU
In my 4 years at SFU, this is the first time I've ever rated a prof, but I had to give her 5 stars after taking CRIM 321 w/ Tamie. She made this class a walk in the park, BY FAR the best prof I've had at SFU. She is incredibly caring, kind, understanding and genuinely wants her students to do well in the course. Highly Recommend.
Really nice & caring person but expects a lot from you for exams etc. in order to do GOOD let alone great on the exams you have to have memorized every reading ever given from both textbooks + articles. TA's were nice but felt as if Korrie didnt want you to do well from how hard she was- harder than the prof herself. over all loved Tamies lecturing
Dr. Fennig is the the most kind professor I've ever had at university. She is knowledgeable in the field of criminology, and teaches accordingly. She was able to teach difficult, in-depth material in a way that students were able to understand and retain. In addition, she genuinely cares about her students. I would take any class with Dr. Fennig!
Tamie genuinely wants all her students to succeed, and will go the extra mile for you. She is passionate about research and her lectures are packed with real world anecdotes and advice. If you want to do well in this class, start your assignments early and reach out to her in office hours.
Tamie is so caring and wants her students to do well, however she does expect that you put in the effort to succeed. She asks questions on tests about very specific things from the readings/lecture (statistics especially) and does focus on memorization more than general concepts. The readings are definitely essential to doing well.
Dr. Fennig goes the extra mile when it comes to ensuring that her students understand the course material by making herself available and posting faq's. Her zeal for qualitative research was reflected in the comprehensiveness of lectures. I would definitely take another class with her again.
Overall an amazing prof who truly does care about students success. Only pet peeve I had was she would always go over class time.
I had Tamie during the COVID-19 pandemic and she was so accommodating of the entire class. Gave everyone a one week extension for our final paper and was always there to answer questions via email or her posted FAQ's. Hands down have never met a prof who is as passionate about the subject she teaches and her students success as Tamie is.
First time writing here, Tamie was probably the best professor I have ever had. I wish I had taken more courses with her! She goes above and beyond when it comes to helping students be successful in this course. Very passionate, kind and frequently updates FAQs. Always gives detailed feedback to do better. You will not regret taking her class.
if you want a good grade you will have to work for it. if you procrastinate, you will be in trouble with the term paper which is a ridiculous amount of work. pay attention to lectures since she points out the important things.
Tamie is one of the best professors Ive had. She's caring, gives really informative lectures, and really wants her students to do well. The only thing that irked me were the milestone papers as they collided with assignments for my other classes and stressed me, but if time is prioritized right, its such a helpful tool that makes your work better.
Dr. Fenning cares for her students but is very strict with marking. For the love of god do not take a course with her unless u want to be lectured about highlighters and how helpful the course is without actually teaching it
Goes off topic quite often but will rush through in the last 15 minutes. Rubric is detailed, strict prof, cry now.
Dr. Fennig is a great and caring prof. It can be overwhelming with how specific she can be but SHE GIVES YOU A TEMPLATE AND INSTRUCTIONS TO FOLLOW which makes it so easy to format and write your paper. Just do not procrastinate and start your paper early. Email her or go to office hours because she is really approachable.
She is a good prof. She cares for her students, but can be strict with plagiarism. She is also ready to work with the students and even move due dates for everyone if it is reasonable. Do not procrastinate with the research paper because it takes an awful lot of time to write - but I feel like my work was cut down because she provided formats.
Make sure you have good time management. Tamie is approachable but she gives very vague answers, better off on your own, take an online specific course love
Consistently goes off topic every lecture, probably learned more reading the dry textbook than attending class, sad.
Tamie is definitely not an easy professor but I find that you can't learn or be inspired when there's an easy prof. The one thing you can rely on when it comes to Tamie is her passion, and her understanding. Hands down the best professor I've ever had, she's specific in what she looks for so there's little room to make mistakes! 100% recommend.
Very good prof, I would definitely recommend to take a class with her. She's really clear with her instructions and tells you literally what she's looking for when marking.
Very strict on what you should include in your papers, was dreading the lectures because she would talk about how important qualitative studies were and not actually teaching. Dry textbook and additional readings
I can't believe I pay for my education and I get lectured on what highlighters to use
A professor who genuinely cares for her students. Her instructions and marking criteria are clear, all you need is to FOLLOW THEM and you will likely be rewarded with a good grade. Don't fear the drafts for the papers, they are meant to prevent you from procrastination and keep you on track. Trust me, you will be very thankful for them later.
She genuinely cares about students. I do not understand why people leaving bad reviews because she was giving out study tips on how to succeed in learning. She gave out crystal clear instructions and tell you exactly how your paper will be graded. She is a very hardworking prof and really wants the student to succeed and have a good time learning.
Good professor but her criteria for the final assignment is just brutal. So many specifics and updates the syllabus at least 5 times during the course of the semester. Really cares about her students, but just be ready to write the most specific paper you have ever written
Her constant reminders and her constant full detailed emails and the rubrics really helped a lot during this semester.
Tamie is a professor who genuinely care for her students. She is as invested in the course material and in your success as you are. Her TA's are amazing and her assignments are designed to help you grow in the course. The classes were remote (Summer 2020) but I thoroughly enjoyed them. Will 100% recommend and will 1000% take a class with her again!
Dr. Fennig was by far one of my favourite professors at SFU. She truly showed me how to be successful in all my courses. I appreciate the lengths and measures she took to teach Crim 131. The course itself would not have been as phenomenal if it wasnt for Dr. Fennigs teaching methods. Definitely take a course with her if you have the chance to!
Even though Prof Fennig is a strict and tough marker (100MCQ midterm, 150MCQ final), she is a genuine prof who is ready to help her students succeed. Make good use of her office hours! I promise, you cannot find any other professor as caring as her. If she has to, she will spend more than 1 hour with you to ensure that you understand the material
Super sweet, gives resources for mental health on day one. Gives outlines way ahead of time, and gives extra resources for projects. Great lectures, and is really caring about her students. has amazing guest speakers. makes you feel important and is honest about workload. gives tips thru out semester for studying and work
It's obvious that she cares a lot about her students, but she has a tendency to ramble and frequently deviates from the actual course material. Long papers with super specific requirements. Be prepared to hear about how handwritten notes are superior nearly every lecture.
Tamie is one of the best profs I've had at SFU! She is the most caring prof who takes the time to make sure you understand the material. I was nervous about taking 220 online but I am more than happy I took it with Tamie. The final paper is based on very specific criteria so make use of her prep sessions for full clarity! Tamie is a lovely prof!
Dr. Fennig is really sweet, but she rambles a lot. The milestone draft and the final draft for the 10 page term paper was a mess because her requirements and the TA's requirements were FAR from similar. Her syllabus is not as "clear" as she constantly says it is. Her TA failed everybody who didn't follow HER expectations.
Dr. Fennig is one of the most caring professors (and people for that matter) that I have ever met! She definitely makes you work hard but as long as you put in the effort and work hard, you can do well in her class. She gives great advice and feedback as long as you make use of her office hours and extra help sessions.
Dr. Fennig deeply cares about her students and focuses on the mental health aspect from day 1. Her tests and quizzes are fair. During her lectures, she would occasionally bring in guest speakers to provide insight on the topic we were learning for that week. I would definitely take her class again and recommend others to as well.
Dr. Fennig was a super caring prof who made it clear she was always available for questions and even just a chat! Her quizzes were super fair with a lot of time (30 minutes for 5 mc questions), but her final paper was 10 pages. It wasn't hard, but start it early! As long as you show up to the lecture, you can just skim the textbook for answers.
Dr Fennig is very kind and clear in her teaching. She gave lots of time for the quizzes and midterm. The only issue was that there were discrepancies between the instructions her and the TAs gave- the TA will mark your paper, and my TA made several mistakes on mine. Start the term paper early!
She's really kind and caring for her students. The only issue I have with the class is the instructions between her and her TAs, like everybody else. The instructions need to be more clear and they need to be on the same page. The term paper was a mess because instructions were not clear.
Dr. Fennig is really passionate about what she teaches and always tries to make everyone in the class participate and learn something which is really appreciated during online schooling. Shes tough on making sure you do your assignments but only because she wants you to pass. Her class was awesome and Id definitely love to have her again.
Dr. Fennig is a great prof for CRIM 131! Very kind and wants everyone to succeed. Tutorial presentation is easy to do well on, and make sure to start the final paper early. Only downside is the very specific questions on the midterm. Just take lots of notes during lectures on what she and guest speakers say and you can do well.
The TA and Prof had some discrepancies for sure, however as a 1st year myself, I did well in her class. You just have to take the initiative and attend lecture, read, etc to do well. I believe my classmates were just too upset that uni is harder than high school. The term paper was not that bad, and she's a very nice prof but is strict. TA was ok.
Never met a prof that cares so much about her students. She's the sweetest person. Class should go well if you do the readings and take good notes in lectures. She's super clear about what she's looking for while also very inspiring. I highly recommend her for first year students, she also talks a lot about mental health and tries to help.
I love her! Dr Fennig is sooo sweet and caring. Very good for first year, she's extremely clear about what she wants and teaches you how to work in university overall instead of just in her class. She cares about you mental health and is so genuine. Just do the readings, pay attention and take good notes.
I love her. She is the best prof at SFU so far. She is so respectful, caring and compassionate about teaching. I would take every class with her as I can she is really one of a kind professor.
The lectures are comprehensible and the professor is clear about her expectations. However, the TA and professor weren't on the same page which created more problems than necessary for a self-explanatory course. Engaging professor, and a mediocre TA.
Best prof ive had so far, cares so much about students and goes to extra lengths to make sure everyone understands
Dr. Fennig is a patient and responsible professor, she is always being happy to help students even on weekends. Her expectation and instruction are clear. However, she is also the strictest prof that I've ever met so far. She covers lots of materials in every lecture - so make sure you are well-prepared and study very hard throughout the semester
Professor Fennig was the best prof I ever had, not only does she care about her students but she gives out plenty of reminders and tips to succeed in the course. Because of COVID it was remote but she made it super easy for her students and was very understanding during these circumstances.
she is the most amazing prof! wow. don't take this one for granted
Tamie is amazing! I had her last semester and she truly cares about her students well being and sets fair expectations. We had weekly quizzes, a midterm and a 10 page paper instead of a final. She also brought outside perspectives from people in the criminology field as part of the lecture sometimes, which I found super interesting.
Tamie seems very nice, but i am not sure why her rate my prof review have been so good thus far. Her lectures could have been 20mins but instead she made them 2 hours as she would have discussions with the class. She is very nice but seems a bit out of touch. We had 2 group presentations and a final paper for this course.
Dr. Fennig gives the class her exact grading criteria. If you space out the work (ex. complete the lit. review before receiving permission for data collection) then you will have the time to get everything done well and thoroughly. She is very caring, and accessible outside of class. Beware, she is strict with plagiarism so be sure to triple-check.
This prof is extremely strict when it comes to plagiarism, copyright, and marking. Expects everyone to be a PHD student. The course content is very boring and dry, and the amount of work feels overwhelming. DO NOT take this class with more than two other courses, it will be too much. Avoid this prof if possible. You have been warned. Good luck.
very good overall prof, takes everything super by the book, super strict about rules. Almost always starts a lecture talking about plagiarism. As a prof she is very caring.
I have heard this class is genuinely hard but this prof made it bareable. i love the way she provides extra office hours she litterally tells you want she wants, just follow her rubric THAT IS IT, textbook is mandatory since you have to cite your paper with it but TAKE THIS COURSE W HER WAYYY EASIER and she helps in so many ways and replies fast
For the proposal and research paper, we were expected to follow the rubrics she provided. She maintains high expectations & strict guidelines, but she is a genuinely caring professor. When students were stressed about other assignments, she gave the whole class an extension! It was still stressful working on the project, but I submitted on time.
I will not sugar coat this. This class is pretty brutal and probably the hardest class I have taken in my four years during the CRIM program so far. Super strict marker, ultra strict on plagiarism. Entire sem revolves around a research project which is extremely time consuming and difficult. Avoid taking with more than two other classes. Good luck!
Yes, the final project was difficult. Yes, her grading criteria is very specific. But no other professor would be fit for this class. Individuals who don't do well in this class are students who don't watch her recorded lectures and/or read her instructions. If you are able to keep up with the course content, this class is an easy A.
Tamie cares about her students a lot and give enough support for students. Weekly quizs are straight forward as long as you do readings and listen to the lecture. Midterm exam need you to understand the theories but it shouldn't be a problem. Get pepare on 10 pages final paper. Pay attention to the rubric and you will get a good grade.
One of the most amazing people I've had the pleasure of knowing. Tamie is a real gem. Very caring, knowledgable and always looking to improve your day and set students up for success.
She come across as condescending to her students. This annoyed me throughout the semester. There is a lot of participation requirement as well.
This class was incredibly mentally draining. I have never had such a class before. Try to pick a research topic that is doable so you dont have to resubmit the proposal. Do not procrastinate. I recommend taking no more than 2 other classes. Try to start everything immediately when it is assigned. Data coding is TEDIOUS and LONG, give enough time.
Lots and lots of revised syllabuses. Her 220 course isn't bad, and she definitely is very passionate in what she teaches. Better than her 321 course for sure, and the feedback she provides during the seminar is solid. Honestly, if you study and do the readings for this one, you'll probably do well enough. Still wouldn't recommend though.
The research assignment will probably take a couple inches off your hairline, so good luck. Overall, not a terrible course. Just another class with Tamie going on and on about plagiarism. Not sure why I even took her again. Also, don't make the mistake I made by doing the research project last minute.
Every lecture I had with Tamie was always just her rambling on about plagiarism and how much she hates it. She's extremely strict when it comes to referencing and in-text citations so make sure you triple check everything. Many students in my class were reported for plagiarism because their citations weren't exactly how she wanted them. Avoid her.
This prof takes strict to the point of paranoia. This class was a horrible experience and took a significant toll on my mental health. The class was very difficult but the prof made it MUCH worse than it had to be. Disregard the positive reviews, they clearly were written by the prof herself. This is an honest to goodness review. Avoid at all costs
Tamie was my first prof and gave us a pretty good impression right away. She was very polite and understanding regarding the first-year students that started university during the peak of covid in 2020. She was also very clear about how the grading would work and provided generally helpful feedback.
