Did she even understand the material she was teaching?
Really nice Prof, new to physics but she is very clear about the material. If you are confused she explains things well.
very nice prof, very professional, prepared well, really enjoyed her class.
has no clue what she is doing. totally unorganized in her presentation. career ambitious but doesn't care about students
unbelievably incompetent. not very organized. made me not like the course anymore
worse course that I've ever taken..very fustrating experience..irrelevant material and inconsistent marking scheme...
I agree with previous posts: poor teaching skills, poor communication skills,. doesn't seem to be interested in her student's learning curve but her own success in the grant writing world
My friends and I think she is a wonderful prof - extremely organized, with useful demos, a sense of humour, and a clear way of explaining things. I actually learn physics in this class.
Had a great time first semester until she started teaching, which is when things started to make no sense. I understood physics until she came along
i hate her she is so confusing, I have no idea what she is taking about most of the time. she just reads her slides but doesnt teach at all . worst prof i have ever had
Worst professor alive..If you could call her a professor...Perhaps mandatory teachers college would be a good idea in Poepping's near future or perhaps a career change...Understood physics before but now question if I know what I am doing...or if she does....Worst..But better than Mahi Singh..192 OK's per lecture can be over kill and annoying.
I agree with previous posts: I was certain to love this course and within few lectures I questioned the reason to be here. She is dull, clearly doesn't have the wit or interest or creativity to make this course the most exciting (I am not saying entertaining!) course-- she uses "ok" way too many times and doesn't seem prepared for most her classes
She was an absolute treat after suffering trough half a semester with Singh! She uses wonderful demos in class, posts all notes online, and works hard to accomodate all the students needs. Her leactures did move quite fast, and if you didn't keep up with textbook work there was absolutely no hope for you, but all in all a fair prof.
She was the best professor back in 2006. I really enjoyed her lectures. Great communication, makes us participate, best learning experience.
a treat? she is clueless! it is puzzling how someone as insecure as her in front of a class chooses to teach!? she is only moderately organized and quite dull, boring, un-creative.there is no enthusiasm she has to share
oh my.....
Be prepared to teach yourself since her lectures are brutal....
omg im in her first year class and its terrible. i can tell she is trying really hard but i really can't stand it. she does not know how to teach. my highschool teacher was much better. sorry. get out of her class if u can.
I have taken physics throughout high school and know the content but going to her lectures makes me confused on what I already know
Her lecture just really confuses me. The examples she uses in her lectures or the examples in the textbook are not sufficient enough for any of the assignments, quiz or upcoming exams. The textbook is just too easy for her assessments. But she answers questions are are quite organized in posting all the class notes and everything, she tries a lot
She is never prepared for class, and will just stand there and wait for someone to figure out the example and than she won't explain it to the rest of the class. She tries so hard but it's like watching a giraffe try to skate. Were so behind in the syllabus it's not even funny.
This prof is complete trash. She is confused and does not solve problems in a manner that is helpful for students.
Tamie Tamie Tamie... where do i even begin. I have never in my life encountered such an incompetent professor. No point in going to classes, weekly assignments are too difficult, exam is brutal. bring zinke back
Unfortunately, I have lost my tolerance for Peopping. I understand that PHY1028 is a new course and it is hard to get things together, but her teaching style is terrible. She simply shows you a question and does it without explaining any concepts or details. Her in class demonstrations never work and the tests are too hard... 63% class average :(
During lectures she tends to prove formulas poorly, but fails to give examples of questions that will appear on online assignments and quizzes. Going to lectures is nearly pointless because you don't learn much and what you learn will not prepare you anyway. As an alternative, you should just read the textbook and do the practice questions.
does not teach whatsoever and talks to herself during class. the students are irrelevant. just don't take the class you will fail.
Her lectures are confusing and not helpful at all. I've been teaching myself, with the help of the online assignments
This professor is absolutely terrible. You walk out of her lectures ten times more confused than before, they are a waste of time. Her excessive amounts of assignments are stupidly hard. Might as well teach yourself from textbook. This course might single handedly kick me out of my program (med sci). Get out of her course while you can. U
Poepping needs to improve her teaching methods - they're absolutely horrible. You leave lectures feeling more confused than before, she spends half the hour on trying to set up slides, and her demonstrations rarely work. She just runs through slides and examples, without any explanation. Get out while you can because you will regret it and suffer.
Poepping seriously needs to understand that students don't learn physics by simply doing a problem and not explaining how to do it. I took physics in grades eleven and twelve, yet, I found myself more confused than I was before. If you have the option not to, DO NOT SIGN UP FOR HER CLASS OR YOU WILL REGRET IT AND SUFFER FOR A SOLID 4 MONTHS.
Very nice lady, not a good teacher. Her lectures are confusing and erratic. She does not explain concepts thouroughly and assumes that students understand where every variable is coming from. I ended up having to teach myself most concepts from the textbook.
hardest course
She draws good eyes in optics
Poepping, although very sweet and has a big heart, is not a good professor. Not only is she completely unclear with her examples and how to approach questions, she doesn't give anyone a chance to develop the basic skills before challenging them. Have fun with her assignments lol. However, she is very approachable and tries very hard which is nice.
Had her this semester for physics 1028. She's a nice lady but a terrible teacher. It doesn't matter if you come to class or not it won't help your understanding on physics. Failed my first year physics midterm due to her inability to teach. God bless anyone who gets her.
She is one of the worst profs who is more confused about the content than the students.
She's a very nice lady, but it's clear that teaching is not for her. She does a poor job of explaining concepts and spends the entire lecture solving practice problems instead of explaining the theory behind the problem. It's very hard to follow her work. Going to her lectures just confuses you more.
Very bad prof. Show up to lectures and you'll leave more confused than you came in. Basically had to teach myself the course.
She's very nice, and she tries to make funny jokes all the time as well. However, she is not very good at teaching and you will find yourself reading the textbook a LOT more than listening to her.. It's really difficult to follow her in class and honestly, her lectures are just very very confusing... review questions for finals are messed as well
TERRIBLE PROF!!!! She makes everything harder- it should be easy physics - grade 12 review but it was so hard to get a good mark in her class- probably a nice lady though - just terrible teaching
She is not good at all. STAY AWAY
A really nice person who definitely cares about her students and does try to be a good professor. She stays after class to answer questions and genuinely wants her students to learn, but her teaching style and the ways she conveys concepts was confusing. It was very hard to stay engaged since she spent a long time doing examples.
An easy course if you took Gr11/12 Physics. Ended up with a 95. She's nice but expect to teach the vast majority of the material to yourself.
Ended with a 97; Exam's really easy.... Just studied one night for Optics, Equilibrium, and Rotational Kinematics LMAOO. If you took Gr. 12 physics then those are the only new things you'll ever learn. No need to go to class, because her exams are NOTHING like those questions. Just learn the textbook.
Her lectures seem to move at a snail's pace, however, they are quite thorough. She was an accommodating professor who genuinely cares about her students. She would remove assignments that were deemed unfair and would provide additional questions to prepare for the midterm and final.
Poepping's lectures are easy way to make you fall asleep, very monotonous and boring. What she teaches is very helpful if you can stay awake long enough to pay attention the whole hour (you won't). The textbook is a good replacement for lectures. She does an adequate job teaching testable material, people just don't listen in class.
lol no (do not recommend Poepping as a prof. I mean she is probably an intelligent and kind woman, but she seems a little too introverted to be teaching a lecture hall of 500+ people -- by the end of the semester not a lot of people showed up. If she's teaching take a different physics.)
Poepping is a very nice lady and I know she cares but she is by far the worst teacher I've ever come across. If you are terrible at physics like I am, this course will be difficult for you with her as the prof. She makes everything so confusing in class that I stopped going. I did decently well at the end of the year by teaching myself the textbook
Worst teacher I have ever had. cannot explain concepts or questions, doesn't know how to work her technology, has messy writing you cannot read, and makes exams that are way too high of difficulty for the students in the class.
Terrible prof. Lectures consist of her talking to herself, skimming over slides, and doing practice problems with no explanation. She changes marking schemes all the times and I left lectures more confused than when I came.
Real talk, she's a pretty bad teacher but her exams are so easy. If you are able to teach the course to yourself you can just skip every single lecture (like I did) and learn the material on ur own using the textbook and khan academy I ended with a 93% and never taken a physics course in highschool Def would recommend but don't go to her lectures
Dr. Poepping is a wonderful professor. She cares so much about her students and yeah she might ramble on a bit sometimes but she always removes unfair questions or assignments and she does her best to get the class to understand the concepts. Just study from the textbook (especially the unit review questions!). They'll appear on the exam.:)
Honestly I think she might be really good in a small class setting but with the huge lecture hall of 700 students she's absolutely terrible. She mumbles, makes lots of mistakes when working problems, sucks at technology and is terrible at explaining. Her exams are also really tricky since you learn nothing from her lectures/ have to teach yourself
She seems like a really nice person but she's a TERRIBLE lecturer. Often mumbles to herself when she teaches and sounds unsure. Going to lecture felt pretty useless to be honest. You're better off self-learning from the textbook. She doesn't really explain things when she's doing problems in class so be prepared for some mindless copying.
She is really nice but she is terrible at lecturing, she often spends the entire class on one problem. You must teach yourself everything from the textbook and online, as she does not prepare you for assessment.
Reads off slides, doesn't go over practice questions or any of that.
Worst prof I have ever had. She mumbles and reads off slides. Doesn't really explain the content. Had to teach myself the entire textbook.
A decent number of kids show up to Physics 1028 with no physics knowledge at all and it is incredibly difficult for them to learn the basic concepts with Poepping teaching. I find her to be a very nice lady but she's such... a terrible teacher. This one's a lot of self-study - but at least the textbook is helpful, and she'll answer your questions.
Would be nice if she actually taught
Poepping is a really nice lady, she actually cares about her students and will try her best to help you if she can. Other than that, had to drop the course because I couldn't understand ANYTHING about her lectures. They are absolutely useless. Basically, is her mumbling while doing different questions.
STAY AWAY she mumbles doesnt get "easy" concepts across at all and generally cant teach
THE WORST physics prof. Nice enough lady but managed to confuse concepts I understood coming out of high school. If you like physics you would be better off in 1301 because even though it is harder you get a better prof and that makes all of the difference! The exams in this course were fair if you did your work and read the textbook.
She is very nice, but I didn't really enjoy her classes. She doesn't really know what she is doing. She isn't great at explaining concepts and that's why very few people actually went to her classes. Her exams aren't crazy hard but yeah get ready to learn it on your own.
Is a very smart person but has a hard time teaching and tends to forget there are some students without a physics background. Questions covered in class are much easier than the ones on the webassign quizzes, in order to do well you need to REALLY REALLY understand the concepts since minimal explaining is done
Nice person. Many people say to just skip her lectures, but for some material she actually teaches stuff that isn't in the textbook, so you should attend most lectures. Yes, she is sometimes difficult to understand because of mumbling and slide skipping, but if you read ahead and clarify with her after class you should be fine.
Poepping is nice but going to her lectures alone will not be enough to pass the course (although I still recommend going to class since she does test material not in the textbook). Study the textbook, know how to do webassign questions (which are harder than exam questions), and the course won't be that bad. I ended with a 97.
I've heard many people complain that Poepping can't teach and that's why they're failing the course - NOT TRUE. I'd say the number 1 reason why people are failing is the lack of motivation. Tell yourself that you can do it - read the textbook, try all the webassign textbook questions, and redo the hard ones for exam prep. I ended with 97.
Dr. Poepping is one of the fairest professors I've come across. She has a well-organized assignments/assessment list posted on the first day of class. She goes over practice questions step by step in lecture and posts everything on OWL. Nothing on her exam isn't discussed during class. IS she the most interesting prof? No. But can you get an A? Yes
Poepping is not a good professor... She is not a good researcher... She is not a good demo maker... She wastes my life
Worst professor in first year, avoid her at all costs!
if you came with physics background, you shouldnt be complaining , 1028 is like 12U just accelerated. so just do the webassign and you will be definitely fine skipping some lectures. however if you know 0 physics you should go each time and try her office hours it really helps. Do the webassign with friends cuz its gonna be a tough and quick course
Bad prof. Skims through many lecture slides. She does the problems either without finishing them telling her students that she'll post the rest of the solution online or takes almost the entire lecture to do just one problem. Webassign was also quite difficult. If you did not take any physics course in high school you'll have a tough time.
2015. May be poor in a large lecture for general physics, but with only 15ppl in her specialty, she was excellent. She cares about your understanding, and the assignments are slightly ahead of current class topic; makes you think hard. Personable; meets outside class to help. I always looked forward to going to her class. Exams were extremely fair
Poepping would do well in small classes, but she's a terrible lecturer for larger ones. When she does try to explain things, she doesn't do it very well. Still, her heart's in the right place; you can tell that she really cares about the students. It's a pretty straightforward course. If you read the textbook, and do WebAssign, you'll do well.
DOnt take the course. She is too smart to be teaching first year.
i really don't like her but i like the opportunity she gives me to play both angry birds and cool math games.
Listen.. the only force I calculated in this physics class was my will to live. It was zero. I hate this class... I didn't take physics before and she didn't explain anything. Never taking physics again!! :)
Class was supposed to be for people taking physics for the first time... Was supposed to come in knowing a lot more info about physics than I thought
She makes things way more confusing than it has to be, basically self teach and then take her online quizzes and assignments
I got a 96 in 12 physics and she confused me in kinematics. Her lectures are pretty bad as you'll see but she's also lecturing slower than the course is designed. I've done webassigns and labs far before learning the content in class so I can't even look at her notes for help.
She takes time on examples, but she's bad at vocalizing what she's doing so its hard to follow her. To do well you need to read the textbook and do the assigned questions and examples in her slides on your own. Take the assignments and quizzes seriously, but also collaborate on them to boost your grade
This course is an absolute joke. The final exam was brutal, not to mention, there is very little to prepare you for any exam. Webassign is a piece of crap. You can't get past exams, due to the fact that she would be in violation of copyright laws.
Get ready to teach yourself and read the textbook. Does not teach well or explain anything clearly. Shame though, because she seems really nice.
She seems really nice but she has no clue where her students are at in terms of understanding of the concepts at any given time. Takes a whole class to do one problem, or goes through 7 in 30 minutes. Impossible to take notes in that class. Really understands physics... just cant teach it.
Went to class twice this semester. She clearly cares about students and tries to teach to the best of her abilities. Evaluations are way too hard considering her teaching leaves many students understanding only the bare minimum of concepts.
Terrible...I think the problem with Tamie Peopping is that she's simply too intelligent to teach a first-year course. Her explanations are often convoluted or long-winded. However, her exams are fair.
A true nightmare, attended all classes and learned nothing from her lectures because she overcomplicates everything and rushes through practise problems or spends the entire class rambling. Considering her poor teaching skills her exams are way too hard. Seems like a nice person but horrible prof.
Very nice prof, but fails to explain anything clearly at all. 2 days of Prep101 explained everything so much better than she did over the course of the semester.
if you go to her office hour she is actually very nice and tries very hard to help her students out however, with a class size of 600+ she certainly CAN NOT manage the classroom and studies, I never went to her class because it just confuses me every time i go... good luck to y'all who is going to have her class in the future
I attended every lecture of Dr.P's and learned nothing lectures. She does not explain anything clearly in class and everything I learned was from my experience in grade 12 physics and the textbook. If you can avoid her as a prof, I highly suggest it. Be ready to read your textbook. PS her exams are very difficult(She really cares... she just sucks)
Prof. Poepping is really nice as a person. She always encourages students to do better in the future, but her lecture is too heavy. I know and everyone knows that she tries and prepares for her lecture, but she over complicates when she explains new concepts. But idk why, she explains much better as an individual (office hour)rather than as a class
I went to almost all the lectures and let me tell you right now that you can skip this class and it wouldnt make a difference. Tamie will confuse you, even if you understood it before. The final before curving was a 55% avg. Consider that this is the easiest phys course and 60-70% review from hs.
Incapable of explaining the content and tests are really hard. Showing up to lectures only confused me more so you might as well not show up to class and learn it by yourself. Avoid her class if possible!
She's a nice person but she is awful at explaining concepts in lectures. Her WebAssigns can be challenging so do them with others to boost your grade. The first half of the course was basically Gr 12 Kinematics/mechanics review. Going to class is a waste of time so just go through her powerpoints and textbook.
Prof. Poeppin is very nice but her lecture does not really make senses. Her test is very hard, and the average of final of physics1028 is only 55% before curved up. If you didn't take physics very well in high school, don't take her class.
She is a nice lady and will try to help you in office hours. She wants everyone to do well but her lectures are a but all over the place though and exams were not easy.
She doesnt do very well in large classes but one on one she is great. Very patient and want you to understand the concepts well. She is clearly very smart and dedicated but just cant always get her point across sometimes. Maybe she should be teaching upper year courses that are more specialized.
Most students skip her classes
I went to her office hours every week and never her lectures. Her slides are a lot but she is super nice and patient and excellent at explaining concepts individually. Her tests were tough but sometimes she would give hints to what you should focus on.
Terrible prof. Will learn more from reading the textbook.
Annotations are a waste of time!! Lessons are confusing and do not teach all the information. better read the online textbook, but it also sucks. so basically its a lose-lose situation.
Terrible lectures. Better off reading textbook. Annotations are a waste of time. Quizzes and assessments are much more difficult and not relevant to the material taught.
My god, the most inflexible and unhelpful class I have ever taken. 100% effective way to scare students off of taking any kind of physics class for the rest of their lives.
the course is poorly planned; lectures are not useful
I'm not sure if she's aware or not, but I pay tuition to be taught by professor, not to have an entire course taught through forced reading of a textbook... Terrible course, terrible prof. Counting down the days till I escape this class
I will sit down to do a quiz and will have never seen a problem even slightly similar to it before. She's definitely a good person, but her quizzes are insanely hard and rarely cover material that's been gone over in class. This course has made me hate physics as someone who loved it in high school.
Im only in first year but this is by far the worst course Ive ever taken ever and think I ever will. Lectures are no help nor are the example videos. There is no point in me paying tuition for this as every single ounce of learning I have done has been through YouTube videos and other external tutorials. I do not recommend physics 1028 at all
I didnt take physics in high school so I was definitely scared coming into this. Starting out, I came to really love physics because of all the research and studying I did on my own (Im a nerd). But with her, I hated the subject and it was impossible to study for tests. Dont have her. Just dont. Trust.
Cannot teach to save her life. I have never taking physics before and this class was horrible. Especially with the format being online, I had to teach myself everything. Prepare for horrible quizzes that do not relate to the content and useless Perusall annotations. Do yourself a favour and don't take this class.
By far my least favorite professor. She has to be the laziest person I met. Her quizzes are all numerical type in responses, which makes zero sense since this is a PHYSICS course. The least she could do is look at workings, or have office hours!!! Also takes forever to respond to emails. Will do my best to avoid her.
I wanted to start by saying I made an account just for this post. I have literally learned nothing in this course. You get assigned readings that need to be annnoted for marks. I did not open the textbook once, or listen to the lectures. I taught myself 100% of this course. Horrible teaching style, hard to get good grades, and overall just horrible
Honestly I don't know if its cause school is online, but made me despise physics and everything about it. Fully sets you up to fail and doesn't prepare you at all for quizzes the lectures are awful and not even closely related to the test material. I learned more from a single video of organic chemistry tutor than every lecture combined
She is very kind and helpful when you get to know her more personally. I did really well in this class because I always seek extra resources and ask her for assistance when I don't understand something. A lot of students didn't do well because they were either lazy or totally ignored asking for help.
No remorse for first year students whatsoever. Our assignments and quizes did not reflect anything from the lectures and were 3 times tougher. The exam was 3 hours and had 35 questions despite giving us a practise test with 33 questions and estimating it to take 3.5 hours. Most of the questions were numerical and I wasnt able to finish on time.
I really enjoyed taking her classes this year given the online situation. She's also really nice and helpful and goes out of her way to help you. Physics could've been harder if it wasn't for her simplified way of teaching.
Having taken grade 11 and 12 physics, I thought this course was going to be easy, but boy was I wrong. Poepping made this course very difficult, as she was super hands-off, very slow to respond to emails and perusall messages, and they made the quizzes way harder than assignments, this was not an enjoyable experience.
Taught horribly. Lecture videos were covered very little & poorly explained examples. Annotations were a weekly waste of time but I would still spend hours going through the textbook trying to make any sense of the lecture content with no luck Quiz and Exam questions were 3x as hard as practice . No office hours and often no voice thread responses
Lol I really don't know what to say. Her lectures literally made simple content confusing. It's literally magical.
She honestly seemed nice but the way the course was designed it made me feel like a physics major as I spent most my hours studying in this course out of all my courses just to end up with the worst grade out of all my courses ;/.
Was like a golden beam shot through the sky. Exceptional professor but I take the course last year so maybe it was different? Help session very good and the Ping pong video at the end was really funny. Thank you. 2021
Had a crazy good time with Poepping this year. Excelent lectures and final exam straightforward from class material but you have to, you must review! Haha and the ping-pong demo was interesting! Thank you. 2021
I'm not sure why everyone doesn't like her! This year was online and maybe she's better online, but I found her lecture videos were clear and I like the way she structured her problems compared to the other profs. Pretty sure she also was the reason why our exam wasn't proctored! I miss Poepping.
Lots of Perusall readings. I basically read the textbook for the entirety of the course. Since I didn't take high school physics, some of the test questions were extremely hard (especially the dynamics questions where we had to account for spring constant, gravity, and friction). I basically spent half my time studying for this one course.
Prof Poepping is the best Physics prof you could ask for at Western. Her lectures were clear, concise, and really easy to follow. Final exam was surprisingly really easy and straightforward as well. I don't know why students don't like her, she's sooooo nice and caring and offers extra help sessions! We also got bonus marks after the final haha.
Professor Tamie Poepping was the best Physics instructor I've ever had. Her lectures were well thought out and really easy to follow. The tests were a little hard but the exam was easy. I just wanted to thank her again for her incredible effort this year!
As a 2nd yr student taking the 'new and restructured' Physics 1101, i believe nothing has changed from previous years. The time commitment for this course is insane, you have tutorials AND labs, quizzes, assignments, readings, etc.!! Prof Poepping doesn't seem to care about her students and makes mistakes in her lecture slides. Pls avoid this class
Lectures are very, VERY disorganized and hard to follow. You can tell the notes are dated- like copied and pasted from previous years. Uses 4 different platforms to teach, which makes it confusing to navigate. Course structure is less than ideal.
If I were to be taught physics by a toddler, they would do a better job than Tamie. Labs, tutorials, assignments, quizzes, readings, incomprehensible lectures, all this work for each of them to only be worth 3-6% with the exams still weighted very high. Have to purchase two different online subscriptions and she took the lab manual away.
I signed up for this class as I was told that it was for people who had never taken physics before and needed an intro on the basics. After 3 weeks in this class I had to drop it. The prof explained absolutely nothing and was just doing the problems herself at lightning speed. I tried to teach myself everything but it was far too time consuming.
Tamie was so bad. With 150 students attending the lectures to begin with(Sept 2021),barely 20-30 remained by the end of that semester. That says a lot about her teaching style,if it was even considered teaching in the first placeWhenever she went through a problem, she used to make mistakes or go off on a tangent and not come to the actual solution.
Cancel her. Cancel this woman at all costs. Lectures are somehow slow and fast at the same time. Regardless, she is incredibly boring. She was a week behind after two weeks of class. Did not cover content in time for the relevant labs and tutorials. Impossible to figure out the assignments. She's a nice person, but seems to get fed up easily.
Professor Poepping dwells on unimportant details/repeats herself over and over again and then cuts content because oopsie! We're very far behind in this course! Every day she talks about her plans to get us caught up. It never works. There is literally no point in going to the lectures as long as you read the textbook and take notes based on that.
She seems like a nice person but I do not think she should be a professor with the ways she have been teaching. We are hilariously behind due to her rambles about information that has little relevance to the course, and manages to make simple topics seem complex. She has not even spoken on a midterm that is a day from now!
Not a good teacher, does not seem to be very compassionate.
The lectures are disorganized and the professor struggles to keep up with the pace. However, reading the textbook and using unstuckstudy can help you stay on top of the material. Avoid relying solely on the lectures.
Dr. Poepping is simply the best! I love going to her lectures; it's a blast!!! She is super organized and does an amazing job delivering the course material.
