She spends plenty of time reviewing basic material in class for people that didn't study; therefore, cutting into the limited time allotted for quizzes at the end of class. This penalized the responsible students for the lack of work done by slackers. Test/quizzes were rushed making it difficult to earn a top grade even when you knew the material.
She doesn't ask you to remember at all, just focus on understanding of the conception. A lot of quizzes but are very easy. Keep follow her assignments and class, you will be fine. Also, if you have some basic conception about chem before this course will be very very easy.
The final exam was multiple choice for long calculation problems; therefore, no partial credit was given, even if you made the smallest error in calculation. This seemed to favor easy grading while hurting the students.
She was a very good teacher. The class was a basic review of chemistry. Makes sure everyone understands how she got a calculation before moving on. Lab attendance is mandatory, however she posts her lectures online so missing a lecture won't kill you. Great class to take if you haven't had chemistry for a while.
Great teacher! really helpful and understanding and her class itself is taught well and her tests are pretty fair and easy to pass as long as you study her notes and read the textbook/ do the homework
Dr. Madison is a GREAT teacher. Genuinely cares to make sure you understand the concepts. Took AP chem in HS so it wasn't hard to me. Tests can be tricky but are more than doable. Quizzes are easy if you pay attention and do homework. Only tested on lecture notes so don't really need book. She gives extra credit and she baked us cookies! =].
Generally very easy. Tests can be tricky because questions are 5 points each and no partial credit, but she makes sure you understand the material and is super nice. Sometimes in lecture, it takes her awhile to get through material and can be boring, but she also just seems like a shy person. Definitely would recommend her!
Extremely nice and kind. Very clear. It is incredibly easy to get an A in the class. Absolutely no complaints.
Tamika is a very nice very helpful professor in a subject that can be very challenging. She will solve problems on the blackboard in front of you in lecture and is very clear in doing so. I definitely learned a lot of the material in lecture.
Professor Madison is wonderful. She cares about her students and is always willing to help if things are not clear. She lectures with powerpoint a lot and works through a lot of examples to really help you to grasp the material.
Simple Lectures, no pressure or stress, just copy down fill in the blank ppt notes. Never actually met or talked to her (don't have any problems in her class, exams are easy if done carefully) but seems nice, very laid back. There is only OWL HW due every week, it's not bad.
All she does is read ppt slides and teach you how to solve problems( super easy problems) I didnt think it was a good learning experience
I took Chem 2 over the summer. Dr. Madison was clear and helpful. I would recommend her as a professor!
without a doubt, the easiest professor ever. if you show up to class with fill in notes and pay attention it should be an easy A
Decent professor. Very boring lecture
She was very nice but spaced out a lot. Very quiet and usually can't see if you have your hand raised, so if you have a question, holler her name out.
Prof Madison is clear in class and gives guided notes. The class isn't hard to understand but she doesn't answer her emails which makes it inconvenient. INCONCEIVABLE.
Maybe the most boring person I have ever had to listen to. Lecture notes are fill in the blank. MC questions on test are pretty hard. Don't try emailing her, had a problem and emailed her 7+ times with no response. I got a look at her computer during office hours and she had 11,000 unopened emails, I didn't even know mailboxes stored that much.
Very slow at teaching, but goes over numerous example problems. All of her notes are fill in the blank. Biggest downside to the class was "flip" lectures where she made YouTube videos and required you to watch and take a test before class, for points. I learned less during those lectures than I did during regular lectures.
She explains concepts very well. Her lectures go slow, but i would recommend taking her class. The tests are reasonable. If you know how to do her practice problems in the notes and in her homework, you will be golden for the tests.
Dr. Madison is kind and cares about how well her students absorb the information. She is well organized and presents the material effectively. I would certainly recommend her.
Dr. Madison's lecture style isn't very traditional, and you can count on being assigned videos and other material to look at before class. Not recommended for someone who is brand new to science or chemistry. If you have a question, DO NOT EMAIL IT TO HER. You will never hear back. Make sure you show up to her office hours. She's great one-on-one.
Very intelligent. Gave summaries of lecture because students were confused. Very adaptable to whatever the students needed. Never really had a plan for recitation because she did whatever we needed her to do. Would spend any amount of time going over confusing things. Would definitely recommend!
I took this class in six weeks over the summer and was able to get an A easily. Tameeks is a great professor. Although the lecture notes are very simple, they are essential to passing the class. The OWL homework is annoying but very helpful as well. Test are challenging because she makes you really think. She can be a sly with the questions.
Dr. Madison is a good professor to have. She is significantly easier than most other chem professors. She is really easy to approach. One thing to watch is she is legally blind so if you are someone who asks a lot of questions in class, make sure to sit in the first few rows so she can see you.
Great teacher! wonderful person. young and enthusiastic about her teaching
When she asks if there are any questions- she means it. Feel free to ask questions during her lectures because she will give you an in-depth answer including examples. Her weekly quizzes (in recitation) are fair, as long as you've studied the material. The number one thing is her notes. They are clear, detailed, and organized.
At first I thought her lectures were very long and boring but once you get past the intro topics she starts to move more efficiently. She is always willing and eager to answer questions and her notes are very thorough and easy to follow. Her tests are very fair and straight forward and if you study the notes and go to recitation they will be easy.
The lectures were mostly boring but her notes were definitely helpful and easy to follow. She seems like a genuinely nice and approachable person who is willing to help her students. I would take her again if I could.
Dr. Madison, although a quiet speaker, is an excellent professor. She genuinely wants students to be knowledgeable about chemistry, and is a fair grader. Her notes are awesome; they are fill in the blank, which makes it easier to follow along since you don't have to write down every word. I always looked forward to this class!
Genuinely the worst lecturer/instructor I have ever had. She confuses herself frequently and needs to be corrected by the class.
Does not respond to any emails to office hours are a must if you need help. The tests are 60% straightforward and 40% critical thinking which is why the averages are around a C- on every test, however, there are only 3 tests that are combined 30% of the grade. There are better options but id say average leaning on the positive side.
Madison lectures off of a powerpoint and gives partial notes to fill in. Her lectures are quite boring, but with a little studying, her tests are very easy. I would recommend her if you want a pretty easy class. She gives practice exams that are nearly the same as the exams, and the final is basically a compilation of the two previous exams.
Don't let the easiness of her CHEM0110 fool you. Her CHEM 0120 tests are pretty hard. But I still like her . Her lectures are easy to follow with fill in note packets and she's enthusiastic and quirky in her own way. Quizzes are pretty easy if you do the online homework and pay attention during recitation.
She will flat out tell you what to expect on an exam and the when you are taking the exam you will realize you were lied to.
I HATED this class. The lectures were so long and extremely boring. The only reason I ever went to class was to get the notes (which weren't even very helpful). Her exams are barely related to the study guides she provides and quizzes. Really no point in studying either.
Boring, but very clear and easy to follow lecture. Notes are posted online in clear-cut packets. Tests can come down to how many little details you memorize, since there are 10 multiple choice for 5% each and they often have to do with a single line or two from the notes.
Dr. Madison really is a very sweet lady, which is tough to come by, She is clearly very passionate about her work. I enjoyed her lectures, and she was willing to accommodate to a lot of her students requests. Tests weren't bad as long as you studied, the practice tests helps. Homework is helpful, and counts toward your grade. I would recommend her!
She is very sweet, very awkward with people tough. You definitely have to go to class because she takes attendance almost every class. The tests are hard. There is homework every week. She is not very easy to talk to after class. She never answers her emails. Overall she is not terrible, but she is not a great teacher.
Dr. Madison's class is expertly organized. The fill-in lecture notes make the lectures easy to follow and are a great study aid. I love the online homework that shows you how to solve problems you don't understand and allows you to re-work them for full credit. This class gave me confidence and inspired a love for chemistry. Great labs, too!
Just study the study guides. That was my mistake. She clearly outlines what will be on the test, so don't focus heavily on topics not listed.
She's a nice professor but I wouldn't say she is a good one. She had issues with moving too slowly. A week before a test she'd realize that she was behind so she'd cram a ton of information in three classes. She uses fill in the blank notes, which is nice, but sometimes you become so focused on what word to enter you don't get the overall concept.
Dr. Madison is a great professor with the outlines of each lecture given. She's does her best to not move on if there are still questions. Nearly every Friday demonstrations are done. The only down side is that multiple choice questions are worth 5 points each and there are only ten of them, with the rest of the exams being short answer.
My girl Tamika Madison is amazing!!! I retook chemistry because my first chem 1 professor really didn't teach and had no idea what he was doing. Tamika has a teaching degree and actually understands how to teach a class. Her exams were not very hard and her fill in the blank slides makes what you need to know for exams very clear.
Attend lectures and Tamika really makes an effort to help you understand the concepts. I always hear nightmares about chem 1 but tamika really helped me establish a strong foundation in chemistry. Take her!
Tamika is by far the best chem prof to take. She explains the material well and gives fill-in-the-blank notes to print out. She also interjects lectures with the occasional self deprecating humor which is hilarious. Tests are fairly hard, but if you but in the work and do the hw, you should do fine. Let my grade slip, but def could of gotten a B
Notes are given in a fill-in-the-blank matter, which makes it very easy to know exactly what to expect on the test. Multiple choice questions on the tests can be very difficult, but she provides practice exams so you know exactly what to expect.
She has fill in the blank notes and attendance is mandatory, so if you can't make it, make sure you have a friend that can give you the notes. She doesn't post them online. Her classes on average do pretty bad, so she curves very hard at the end. I would have gotten a B-, but ended up with a B+. Use practice exams to study and you'll do fine.
I absolutely loved Tamika. She is so down to Earth and really cares and will help if you go to her office hours. She has fill in the blank notes so you have to go to class or have a friend that does because she doesn't post them online. Her tests were very easy (especially if you understand chemistry from high school).
She was honestly one of the nicest and most sincere profs I've ever had. Her lectures were sprinkled with humor and fun pictures in her slides to keep your attention. She was great at taking time to explain problems and then answer questions about them.
Dr Madison does make her class very hard. I took it at 8 am last semester and the hardest thing about it was waking up for it. Gives out fill in the blank lecture notes. Lectures are fairly boring but if you go to them and do the notes her tests will not be hard at all.
While Tamika is undoubtedly well versed in the subject, she lacks the ability to effectively communicate the material. Extremely disorganized, even the TA's were confused by her instructions most of the time. Tests were hard and often included trick questions-does curve but will never tell you by how much. Not accessible and will never answer email
3 exams are pretty easy. She makes fill in the blank notes that are straight from the slides. Dr. Madison is really nice and really knowledgeable but cannot communicate and teach effectively. We also had a random in-class assignment about POGIL that my friend and I did. Dr. Madison put the grade in as 10/15 instead of 15/15 and has not changed it.
Dr. Madison is very knowledgable about the subject, but she not very accessible outside of class. She doesn't reply to email. I emailed her weeks ago asking her to fix a grade that was entered incorrectly and didn't get a reply. The grade still hasn't been changed even after talking to her multiple times in person. Tests aren't too bad.
Dr. Madison is one of the best professors I have had at Pitt. She gives fill in the blank notes so you never have to read anything for class. As long as you understand the problems on notes and recitation worksheets, you can get an A on every test.
Tamika helped me a lot outside of class for the labs. If you ask her for help after class or during her office hours, then she'll be glad to help you. She's super nice, and you won't feel stupid for asking questions. Lectures are boring, so I learned little in class; I learned most of the material when I looked back at the notes. The final is hard
Dr. Madison is very nice. However, as the semester progresses the tests do tend to get harder. She is very accessible outside of class, and I recommend taking advantage of that. On the downside, she does not respond to emails, so ask anything in person. Overall, she's a good professor if you have a strong understanding of the subject.
Easy fill in the blank lecture notes. Her tests had open ended problems that were all based on recitation worksheets and quizzes. My one complaint is that some of the multiple choice were strictly based on memorization, so know the names of the scientists who made the different chem laws and principles. Basically, memorize all of the notes.
Brand new POGIL activities made Madison an interesting class. Her lectures are pretty bland and the exams are too long. She wasn't prepared to teach a curriculum based on POGIL so that made things difficult. Be prepared to learn everything yourself.
She's very sweet... Her tests are the most frustrating out of all my classes. One of the class averages was a 57. The material in exams is on a much deeper level than what little we go over in class lectures and POGIL activities, AND THE TEXTBOOK. The exams are also too long for 50 minutes, and the 10 multiple choice determine HALF your test grade.
Don't take this class unless you're prepared to teach yourself pretty much everything. There is no value in the pogil activities that we were forced to do almost every class. When she does lecture it is very boring ,uninformative, and not correlated to the exams. The tests are much more in depth than anything that had ever been discussed.
The lectures are dry and boring but not as much as the POGIL activities that make up the majority of class days. The class lacks structure and majority of questions asked on exams werent even taught in lecture so much that the average for our last exam was a 57%. Dr. Madison is nice but 10/10 would not recommend.
Nice lady but bad prof and HORRIBLE test with no curve
Dr. Madison really cares about her students and is incredibly nice. She is not great at email but if you go to her office hours she is always very helpful. The tests do require you to do problems from the book outside of the class. On tests, our class did bad on she offered a retake exam to earn back up to 20 questions. I love Tamika.
she's a very sweet sweet woman. that being said i didn't like her as an educator at All. the pogils we did where we were supposed to teach ourselves were the worst, which meant since no one learned from that, everyone did horrible on tests. i wish she just taught us instead of relying on pogils. tests WERE doable, but just too long
Definitely a disorganized professor; completely unreachable outside of class. Gives notes, and they're basically the textbook. Some test problems are difficult for even students who took AP chemistry, and multiple choice problems are each worth 5% of a test. Be ready to teach yourself and deal with bad lectures, but if you are, then an A is doable.
Very disorganized and notes were in 10 different places. Fill in the blank notes were useful for some people, but I didn't use them because you don't retain any information from them whatsoever. Tamika is a very nice woman, but the class was just a mess. Exams are ok.
You will not be able to contact Dr. Madison and expect a return email. She does read them though so if you aren't too intimidated by her you need to talk to her in person after class. Her grading is hard but not uncommon for chemistry. She does provide the necessary information but the subject matter is hard, so its not just try and get an A.
Tamika Madison is all about her students and that truly shows throughout the course. She strives for the students success and she will help you. That being said, occasionally she will be unprepared for class. Not by all means an easy A but she is awesome.
Tamika is a nice lady but very disorganized. She reads off her lecture notes and barely elaborates on topics therefore the majority of the class has no idea what is happening half of the time. The exams are long and contain information or problems we have never seen before. I would recommend taking a different professor for Chem 1 and 2.
While I didnt do too badly in this class, I learned absolutely nothing and was barely taught the information. I relied solely on my lab and homework grade. The exams did not portray the information or problems that we went over in class. Lecture is dry and boring, the nice thing was fill in the blank notes but those proved useless on exams.
Funny and nice lady; really cares about her students, but her lectures and notes are extremely disorganized. She's inaccessible through email and in person. She has difficulty seeing and hearing. She gives fill-in-the-blank notes, but they aren't useful. If you haven't take AP Chem before, get ready to read the textbook and actually try hard.
Dr. Madison is a very manageable Chem professor. She gives you fill in the blank notes which help for the tests. She also posts 2 comprehensive practice sets before each test, which prepares you well for the tests. Although the tests are pretty hard, if you know your stuff, they're not too bad. The only downside is that her class is test heavy.
She's nice, lectures are dry, but she gives the fill-in-the-blank notes which are easy enough to study later on before the test. Tests are consistently very much a timing issue. 10 MC (5 pts each) and 5 FR (10 pts each). Don't spend too much time on MC. POGIL is dumb. Opened textbook once. Make sure you know how to do Sapling HW before tests.
Her exams are way too long for the time allotted. Her notes are also way easier than the exam itself so it basically sets you up to fail. She told us she would have a review session before the first exam and just didn't have one. The recitations are supposed to help but they do not. The quizzes don't really match her exams. She's nice otherwise.
Lectures are not at all indicative of what will be on the way too long exams. Recitations are not helpful, notes are unclear. Not my fave class right now:(. Avoid.
As much of a great woman Dr. Madison is, her tests are very challenging. Her notes, quizzes, study guides, and practice tests aren't at all indicative of test material, nor is she very approachable as a professor. There isn't very much partial credit or leniency on exams, which would be understandable if the course wasn't difficult.
Unclear grading criteria. Tests do not correlate to lecture. Difficult to contact as she doesnt respond to emails. Excessively difficult
Tamika is the worst professor I have ever had. I spent hours and hours studying and using materials SHE gave us to prepare for exams and still did not do well. She needs to spend less time reading and responding to ratings on here and more time working on improving as a professor. AVOID TAMIKA MADISON!!!!!!!!
To prepare for exams, I do all textbook problems, see a tutor, go to office hours, go to TA hours, branch out & do online practice, find challenge questions and spend hours on end studying for her exams. But, if I even get ONE multiple choice question wrong, it's an automatic 5 points off (95). She offers no extra credit opportunities & isn't fair.
I study so much for this class and the highest I've gotten on an exam is a D+. I feel like Dr. Madison doesn't listen to our concerns about her course. The exams are super long and much harder than expected every. single. time. The lecture notes are confusing and I just wanna cry..... avoid.
she is terrible. she gives fill-in notes for lecture which is good but she cannot explain anything. her tests are on another level compared to lecture notes. each mc is 5 pts so if you miss 2 mc youre already at a 90. she focuses on making sure everyone is paying attention and punishes the class. she rarely gives you back points. dont take her.
Never take her for a chemistry class. Her tests are difficult and the amount of points the multiple choice questions are on her tests is ridiculous. I study so much for her class and use all of the resources provided and its still hard for me to pull a good grade. She doesn't respond to emails and is not helpful outside of lecture.
Avoid at all costs! A very unhelpful professor. She is basically inaccessible outside of lecture, and she is never in her office. She does not respond to her email. She does a very bad job explaining most of the concepts, and sometimes she cant explain it at all. Looking at the way her graders assign points, they have definitely failed Chem 2.
Take negative reviews with a grain of salt. I used her lecture notes, old quizzes, and sapling HW to study. Exams DO reflect those materials. NOTE: I'm NOT naturally good at chem, she makes it doable. She does not explain concepts very in-depth, but she doesn't ask you to know them in-depth. Chem 2 with Tamika was a blessing. Y'all should chill.
Tamika made CHEM0120 the hardest class I have ever taken. Her notes are absolutely useless and her tests DO NOT reflect what is covered in class. I studied from the textbook, her notes, the HW, and did every practice problem assigned and could still not do well on her tests. The amount of time I spent studying was insane and it never paid off.
Really terrible class that made me hate chemistry. It stressed me out so much because tests were nothing like lecture and she was no help at office hours. She told me after she made a grading error, she can't fix it because she's too busy. Really awful experience. I actually cried in Hillman library because of this class.
Terribly disorganized, hard to follow. Thought the fill-in-the-blank notes would be easy to follow but these were unrepresentative of the test material. Went back and forth between giving us bonus only to tell us about it after the final had passed . Lowered a given test grade 5 pts after a mistake she made herself whilst grading. Has no patience.
I really wanted to like Tamika, but as the year progressed I found this class to be more and more unbearable. Tamika was rude to students during class and would yell at the class before taking tests. Multiple test questions were ones we had never seen before in class or even depicted in the book. I loved Chem before this class, avoid if possible
Notes were ok but reading the tb helps a lot. Suggested practice problems are the ones like the open ended on the test. Concept questions are awful. The way concepts are taught need to be revised but read the tb and do the concept and self assessment problems in the tb to help. Focus a lot on concepts, math isn't that hard. Studied a lot to do ok.
AVOID. I spent countless hours reading the TB doing practice problems, and seeking additional help and it did absolutely nothing for any of the exams which are wicked hard. She didn't post the study guide for the final until midnight and the final was at 8am the next morning. She didn't curve the tests or final grade.
Guys, the avg score for her final was an 80%. When I took Chem 1 the avgs were in the low 60's. She gives fill-in notes that exams are based on, so if you don't go you won't do well. She was so inspirational in lectures, I am considering switching my major. It's college -you need to study to understand the concepts, not just memorize. Great choice!
You don't have to take my review with a grain of salt because it's not really salty it's just the truth she just needs to face. Tests are unnecessarily long and the mc questions, nothing like the notes very in depth. on all my tests I ONLY miss mc and that brings be down to a d all the time. Doesn't state extra credit clearly and just don't takeher
I don't get all the hate. This class is COLLEGE chemistry, so you should have to think on exams. I've never had a problem with timing on her exams, and I think they are more than fair. I think pre-mods are mad that getting a 4.0 isn't as easy as high school, but if you really understood Dr. Madison's notes you'd be able to get an A.
Tamika may have a hard time seeing but always tells the class to speak out loud if they have any questions. You need to understand the concepts and not memorize to pass this class, as it is for any chem class. She gives great notes and a lot of helpful resources for the tests and exams that she gives.
Class wasnt as bad as others say but was no breeze. Dr. Madisons notes were helpful, but not even close enough to ace the exams. I dont think exams were as bad as the others said, but I already learned the material from AP chem. She is a very nice person, and a fine teacher. Nothing amazing, but nothing that bad.
She seems like she cares and is trying to help us, although I admit she could do better (especially with responding to emails). Its possible to do well in this class, but the notes are only a guide. You must read the textbook to pass. Exams are fair, but definitely not easy. BTW, multiple choice worth a lot but thats standard. Be careful on them.
I thought that Dr. Madisons tests were very fair, cut and dry examples of what she puts on the study guides. The POGIL was a little dry (not her fault, but she is the dept. head so she had to use it when I took the course), but I thought her notes and study guides were great resources, and she is a nice prof. I just wish I applied myself more!
To all the freshman about taking this class, avoid at all costs. I made this mistake and it was likely my biggest mistake of my college career so far. Take Fortney instead
Dr. Madison is an incredibly sweet lady! I recommend attending her office hours as she is willing to spend ample time with you clarifying any confusions. Her fill in the blank notes, saplings and practice tests are the most useful to study. The course definitely requires effort and hard work, and Dr. Madison is willing to help you along the way.
She doesnt know how to teach and it was such a bad class. Low averages and doesnt try to help you. The class was very stressful and everyone seemed to struggle. Take somebody else
The class is hard, but shes a great teacher
Commonly known as the worst professor in the chemistry department and who to avoid, I would not recommend taking a class with Dr. Madison. She speaks very quietly and doesnt provide adequate examples to prepare for exams. Tests minute details and makes tricks for mistakes. Does not offer help outside of class either, I was very disappointed.
Overall, tests are easy, but you need to do a lot of outside work. Notes are fill in the blank. POGIL is used about 1/2 the time, which is annoying because the stuff learned in that isn't often reviewed. She often is in her office to offer help. TAs are also available for help
Dr Madison struggles to be an effective lecturer. She is not organized and is hard to reach. Test questions are not similar to course materials and are designed to be difficult. I would not recommend.
I don't think she's as awful as everyone says, but she could work on her teaching skills. Seems like a nice person, but doesn't explain concepts well during lecture or office hours. Fill in the blank notes. Tests were average, as long as you did the practice exams before them. POGIL is used half the time and sucked, as the material was never taught
Dr. Madison is a very kind hearted woman who has a lot of knowledge in chemistry. I dont Understand why she is rated so low. She has clear grading criteria and it is nothing ridiculous. Study for 3 hours before exam youll be fine.
Super confused about these ratings for Dr. Madison. I barely passed honors chemistry in 10th grade and ended this class with a B+. She gives fill in the blank note sheets for class and you complete group exercises. If you pay attention in class, you will do well. The class averages on all the exams were around 85! Small curve and great class.
I also don't get why Dr. Madison is so disliked. Her chemistry class had averages that were in the 80s. If anything, she was being nice and giving us easier exams than the other classes. I bet it's the failed premeds that are leaving bad reviews because most of my friends liked her and thought she was more than fair. Also, she's not mean, just shy.
Dr. Madison is an amazing professor and woman! I don't know why she is rated so poorly! Her study guides are extremely similar to the exams, she does not throw curveballs, and the exam questions are seriously not hard! She is kind and understanding and DESERVES to be rated so much HIGHER 11/10 would recommend!!!
I would avoid taking Tamika Madison. Her questions are very dificult and near impossible to pass
Dr. Madison gets a bad wrap but I thoroughly enjoyed her class. The material on the exams was extremely similar to the study guides and PRACTICE EXAMS she gave out. She is always willing to help you outside of class if you need it but you have to take that extra step. The lectures can get a bit dull but she tries her best to add a joke or two.
I had her for Gen chem 1 and 2 and ended with good grades. She always gives practice exams and study guides which help a lot. The saplings aren't bad and actually help a lot more than her fill in the blank notes. Only thing is she never responds to emails.
Her reviews are way too harsh. She gives clear study guides and practice exams that are representative of real exams, and fill in the blanks note packets have clear examples of test questions. I enjoyed being in her class and she made Chem 2 way less stressful than it needed to be. I was worried to take her because of these reviews, not necessary!!
Tamika was not helpful in the slightest when we had to move online. Even before Corona we had 4-5 different websites we used for homework and assignments. Her class was always confusing with a lot of work that sneaks up on you. It was very difficult to get in contact with her so you have to be persistent. I would stay away from her if you can.
The way that Dr. Madison talked and conveyed the information in lectures was extremely confusing, which led a lot of the class to struggle on the material on exams. If there are better options, I would recommend taking them instead of her.
She has the reputation to avoid her as a professor by the students. She does not put in the time or effort for students. She is an ineffective teacher and exams are very unfair. The class was a terrible experience. Never take her.
Doesn't always announce stuff so it can be on you. Check most things at least once a week, forgetting to do one assignment can screw you over. Show up to lectures for tophat attendance/occasional questions. Pogils are easy grade boosters in lecture. Exams aren't that bad. Has note packets that translate to the exam if you pay attention/do problems
Very clear she puts no effort into this class. Does not respond to emails asking for help. Lectures are not useful and exams are too long and confusing. Don't take her
Exams are extremely hard and lectures are very unengaging.
i read these comments n took the class anyway cuz chem was easy in HS. DONT DO IT. ESP. IF UR NOT A CHEM MAJOR. theres lab report, prelab, 15-20hw prob, quiz, tophat every week. 3 exams + final. and its NOT easy chem. its super hard and dr. madison is not a good at explaining. the homework taught me more than she did. not enough time on exams.
She gave a lot of homework and that was the only way I got through the class because she doesn't teach well AT ALL. I spent my entire semester teaching myself all the material from the homework. I had a good grasp on chemistry before this class because I took a lot of chem classes in highschool, but if you've never had chem do not take her.
Dr. Madison is tough. She expects you to already know everything in AP chem, and will build off of that. For me, I have a very limited chem background, so her class is especially hard. She gives you fill in the blank notes. GO TO LECTURE! In chem it's important you attend class. She's not the best teacher, so you will probably need to watch YouTube
While Professor Madison is a genuinely nice professor, I don't think I've been learning very much from her class itself. It seems like most of the learning needs to be done on one's own with Khan Academy or YouTube, as lectures and POGIL activities are not often explanatory and the book can be difficult to understand. Also, homework access costs $.
So she does not know how to teach. The notes she goes over in class are completely irrelevant to sapling homework and exams. I honestly just use my high school notes from AP Chem and it is fine. However, if you have not taken AP Chem AVOID HER!
Dr. Madison just straight up does not teach. She rarely ever lectures and instead wastes class time by putting us into breakout rooms to do POGIL activities on material she's NEVER EVEN taught yet (these are also graded). We don't learn anything, if you want to succeed in this class be prepared to teach yourself bc she's not helpful at all.
Teaches the subject matter like you already know it, she barely explains anything and when she does she seems unsure of herself. She tries too hard to teach through POGILS which help no one especially when put into quiet breakout rooms. Her quizzes are very hard compared to the homework and weekly quizzes.
I took Dr. Madison for CHEM 0110 and I really enjoyed it. It's a tough class and you're going to have to read the textbook. She is a great lecturer, with balanced quizzes and tests. Her tests are hard, much harder than the practice tests she writes. Always prep for the applied questions, not just the understanding. Overall would recommend it.
Don't take Tamika Madison for labs. Over the course of my semester, she has been an absolute pain to deal with considering her lab videos are on average an hour long, and that is not taking into account the amount of time afterwards needed to complete the lab. She has no leniency when it comes to due dates for labs or prelabs.
Dr. Madison was good for the first half of gen chem 1 when her teaching consisted of lectures, but for the second half of the semester she switched to doing POGILs rather than lectures which really made it difficult. Also, she does not reply to emails and does not make overall grades available to us until the end of the term.
She gives you three attempts at quizzes. The tests are pretty much the examples she gives in class. She is AMAZING.
POGILS are a complete waste of time, and I dont think any students benefit from them. The tests are pretty similar to the study materials she provides. Quizzes are okay; you have 3 attempts and recitations are good review. Labs are unclear. She doesnt communicate deadlines well, so its your job to keep track of them.
Dr. Madison is very clear in her criteria. Her lectures are very organized and she holds review sessions for exams. She also gives you study guides and practice exams. It can be easy to miss announcements though, so check everything at least once a week. She does not baby you. Put in the effort and you will do well. Labs are good too.
I had Tamika for the lab portion of my chem 1 class. Labs were not too difficult if you spend and good amount of time on them. Lab videos were online and there were a couple errors here and there that we had to correct or as shown in experiment results. I did have a good laugh in some points of the videos! TA watches the vids w/ you for questions.
Professor Madison was one of the best science teachers I've had. I've taken two Chemistry classes in high school, including AP, and felt so frustrated with the subject. I learned more in her chem class than I did in high school. I wish I could retake the AP Chem test with the knowledge I have now! She's a diligent teacher and is incredibly smart.
Listen. She gives you weekly quizzes, and you have 3 attempts at them. She gives fill in the blank notes - I repeat fill in the blank. She gives you pretty much the same problems in class that are on the tests. She is amazing.
She NEVER responds to emails. Power outage? Youtube not working? Unable to access labs? She doesn't care the slightest. She doesn't care about students and won't give even the smallest exceptions even during a pandemic. I sent her 4 emails and after my fourth with no reply, I gave up all hope she will reply to any. AVOID HER AT ALL COST!!!!!!!!!!!!
I took Tamika in fall 2019, but she is a really good professor. As long as you listen during lecture and do the homework, the test will have similar content. I am not a big fan of POGIL, but if you ask questions, it is easy to learn. The lab part of the class will also boost your grade so that's nice.
I see Tamika is back to her old shenanigans! This class is a straight joke because she expects you to teach yourself. Test questions are random and exams are way too long. NEVER take Tamika Madison!
Dr. Madison, I believe that you work hard but please know that the way you teach in such a monotonous and uninteresting way drives students to not pay attention. Quantum mechanics can be fun! Also, PLEASE reply to your students emails. It is so unbelievably frustrating and unprofessional to not get a response.
Dr. Madison is clearly passionate about physical chemistry, but she often seems far too busy, and the class can feel disorganized. The class is primarily graded on exams, which are often similar to your homework and in-class problems so pay attention. You do have to read the textbook and put in the time outside of class to really get a good grade.
Inefficient lecturer. Unclear grading criteria. Notes do not help. Exams are too long and often include problems youve never seen
Id avoid this professor as she does not communicate with you outside of the classroom, has disorganized lectures, and tests on things not covered.
This class is extremely difficult and the professor does little to aid student understanding. I did very poorly in her class, but scored high in many other similar courses. I would not take this professor.
Dr. Madison was the best chem professor I have had at Pitt. I took her in early 2020 right as covid hit, she was very fair but most of all she was kind. I don't understand all of the hate she gets, if you aren't willing to put in a little bit of work for this course then don't take it. I didn't do as well as I wanted but that's on me not her.
Professor Madison is a great teacher who goes into detail during lecture and takes her time to explain every concept thoroughly. Her exams are exactly like what you practice in class, and she allows you to make appointments to see her after class on Calendly with any questions. Overall she's very caring and I can tell how hard she is working!
Honestly, one of the worst chem classes i ever took, l do not recommend. First, the class is based heavily on qui. there is a quiz in recitation every week, 3 midterms, and a final exam which equals about 70% of your overall grade. Her lectures are boring and not required. she has no sympathy whatsoever for students personal issues. Do not take her
Professor Madison is not the best. She is not accessible outside of class and her lectures do not reflect exams. Trust me, I put in the work, I did all recommended practice problems, went to class everyday, asked my TA questions, took good notes and did all review material for exams and nothing was like the exam. Exams are 10x harder than anything.
Terrible professor. Expects you to understand things that she will never teach you. Expects you to come to review events but will schedule them during your lab. Expects you to study examples that have the WRONG answers. Dont take her if you can help it. If I didnt know half the stuff from high school I would have failed. Also will never email back
Tamika is a nice person, however, when it comes to teaching she is awful. What we learn in lectures does not reflect the exams at all. I went to every peer review session, went to lecture, did the study guides, HAD A TUTOR, and still failed both exams. They are not on what we learned, and I would avoid this class at all costs.
Awful Professor. Does not care or respond to students. Visibly annoyed when people ask questions. Tests are extremely hard and are too long to complete in time given. Multiple choice is worth 5 points each so if you miss 2, you are down a letter grade already. Absolutely ridiculous and completely unfair. I study for hours and still cant do well.
Do not take her if it can be avoided. She is the most inaccessible professor I have ever had. She has extremely high expectations that few people can meet. Test averages are VERY LOW and she will not tell you your grade until the end of the semester. Don't bother emailing her she responds to rate my prof reviews before she responds to students
While Dr. Madison is clearly knowledgeable about Chemistry, she is in no way meant to be a teacher. Whatever is gone over in class will most likely not be covered on the exams. Speaking on exams, the class averages are EXTREMELY low and she does not have much sympathy for those (the majority) who struggle. The exams are extremely hard. STAY AWAY
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Tests were obscure and she did nothing to address the horrible averages except blaming students for not studying enough. She rushed through the course curriculum to teach, and I quote, "the stuff she wanted to teach." Inaccessible outside of class and seems annoyed when people ask for help.
Avoid Tamika at all cost. I did not have her, but she was the chem lab director. She is scary and I want to warn anyone and everyone not to take her bc a caring soul did that for me:) I was standing in the hallway of her office before lab and she screamed at me.
Tamika is extremely knowledgeable in the field of chemistry and kind, however, I believe that she could do more to make her lectures more engaging to make the learning of chemistry easier on students. Some have found the tests to be egregious, (the averages are VERY low) and I think this is due to the fact that the lecture is not engaging.
Test material is not similar to whats covered in lecture. Fill in the blank notes are not helpful. Inaccessible! Shes as bad as everyone says
Tamika is a very well-respected, but terrible professor. Essentially inaccessible via email and have not responded to any of my emails over the semester. No COVID friendly options, and if you miss class, be prepared to spend a lot of time catching up. The amount of time given for exams is impossible to finish it in time. Would not recommend.
For lab, not very helpful and could be quite rude at times.
Professor Madison knows a lot about chemistry. Unfortunately, she doesn't know how to give over this knowledge. She is unapproachable when asking for help and is not very accommodating when personal emergencies arise. Her tests oftentimes do not reflect lecture and lecture within itself is quite boring and unengaging. Avoid if possible.
Professor Madison is a decent professor. She is knowledgeable on course material and her notes are decent. She gives a lot of exam preparation materials before each exam. Lectures aren't the most engaging and the course is very test heavy. Not a terrible experience overall; would recommend if you're willing to put to put a decent amount of time in.
Okay listen. There are three exams and a final. I got an F on the first two, a B+ on the third and a C+ on the final. I did all the hw, did lab to the best of my ability, and participated. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS OVER AND OVER if you want to do well on these exams. Lectures were fine, but if you want to pass the exams, DO THE PROBLEMS SHE GIVES!!!
The class is by no means easy, but she goes out of her way to provide extra resources for students to help them learn best. She is always willing to help students to help them succeed. My one criticism is that she is very unresponsive to emails and hard to reach outside of class because she has many other responsibilities.
Professor Madison's class was pretty easy if you attended and her lectures gave the required information to pass her classes. Many people try to exaggerate that she's rude but she simply acts fairly and her class is manageable.
genuinely don't know why she has such a bad rep... she gives out plenty of resources like practice exams and example problems, and her exams are consistent with those resources, recitation quizzes, and lectures. She's a little dry, but the only big downside to having her is she's hard to get in touch with because she has so much on her plate.
I enjoyed the class a lot. She uses fill-in-the-blank notes that you can fill in as she goes through power points in lecture. Everything that you need for tests is in the notes. Do the Achieve homework assignments because they are very similar to the free response questions on the tests. She also gives practice tests and does reviews before tests.
Dr.Madison is brilliant but I think that’s why I struggled in her class, she knows so much she doesn’t understand how students don’t know these things. You have to be prepared to work very hard and teach yourself from the book. Notes were fill in the blank. Exams were hard but the practice exams helped.
I would avoid at all costs. I feel like I learned nothing from lecture, even though she provided fill in the blank notes. All learning comes from textbook and practice problems. Very unorganized and would have multiple typos and conceptual errors in questions on quizzes and exams to make these already tough assignments even more confusing.
Dr. Madison is a very nice lady but I don't feel that I learned very much from her class. She has fill in the blank notes but sometimes she is hard to follow and doesn't explain concepts very well. There are not a lot of resources that she gives so you have to find a lot of your own practice problems and examples.
Lectures were composed of fill in the blank notes with few practice problems spaced throughout. Not very engaging, but the tests were mostly based on what was learned in lecture. I found myself doing a lot of practice problems and watching videos outside of class to make sure I completely understood the content.
Definitely not the worst chem professor. Lectures are fill in the blank notes and are easy to follow. Not accessible outside of class, so ask any questions at the end of lecture. Has review sessions before every exam, and posts practice exams and final so students can see what's on them. She gives weekly online homework that's easy and helpful.
Offers fill in blank notes, non-engaging lectures, offers review sections, very unhelpful for labs. Exams were ok, not impossible but you had to study a lot. Final was super hard. Very understanding. Not the worst teacher to have for chem, I wouldn't try to get Tamika but I wouldn't avoid her.
Tamika Madison is genuinely the worst person to be in charge of labs. She's so unbelievably unorganized, won't respond to emails and if you happen to be able to get a hold of her in her office then she'll stare at you blankly and not give and answer. She's screwed up multiple lab grading and wouldn't fix it. Pitt needs to do something
These reviews are quite extreme. The class is by no means amazing but Dr. Madison is a sweet woman. Definitely hard to approach and seems quite overwhelmed by the university though. Do hw, do practice problems, go to her reviews before exams, and you should be relatively fine. Mind, taking AP Chem prior helped, her lectures weren't the best.
Dr. Madison is a good person but not a great teacher. These ratings are a little extreme, if you put in the work for the class and go to office hours and seek help you will do good. If you are looking to coast by she is not going to be the professor for that. I recommend going to the lectures and studying using past homework and recitation sheets.
Lectures are good for recitation quizzes but have nothing to do with exams. Professor cannot be reached outside of class, she does not respond. Blames low scores on everything students could be doing, but barely considers that her exams are extremely long. Notes are fill in the blank, basic, and childish, they do not help to prepare for exams.
Awful professor. Her lectures are boring and slow-paced. She has partial notes that a 3rd grader could fill out and they arent helpful. Her exams are unfair and way too long. Averages on exams are usually in 50-60s range. She is unable to be reached outside of class and when she is in class she is usually late and unprepared. Avoid at all costs.
WORST PERSON EVER! I am so sorry that all chem students must have her for lab. Absolutely inaccessible outside of class and extremely rude in person. Complained about my ankles being out even though I was wearing full length pants.
I am reviewing her for being the person who makes the chem lab TopHat. There are countless typos and she has no grace when we make mistakes. There is just overall no compassion, and the labs are always needlessly complicated yet there is not enough instructions.
Dr. Madison is a nice person, but her class is ridiculous. The fill in the blank notes are little help. She gives super easy examples during lecture, but then gives difficult questions on the exams. The ACS exam given this year was meant to be taken in two hours and we were given 55 minutes . Normally we have 25 questions and 50 minutes to finish.
The tests were very similar to practice tests. She had printout notes but didn't post filled-in ones online. Don't email her though because she'll never get back to you.
Not great as a teacher, but the content was light because I had AP Chem in HS. Inaccessible outside class, homework is semi-helpful. Don't do the fill in notes, take your own, trust me it's better that way. Had a B+ before the final, didn't even do bad on the final and ended with a C+. Doesn't curve and can never tell who she's talking to.
She's really nice but not accessible outside of office hours. I still have emails from weeks ago that she has not responded. She's not the worst Chem professor at Pitt. Make sure to go to class for POGILs and complete homeworks.
Sweet woman. She's hard to get in touch with and a very exciting teacher, but she is definitely one of the better options. Tests are similar to practice tests and not hard. She offers EC when class does bad on a test. Do the textbook problems for practice because she does not give a lot of examples in class. Will not prepare you well for ACS final.
Professor Tamika is a great person, and she has helped me a lot throughout the entire semester. However, she didn't do a great job teaching her students. Avoid her if you don't have a strong chem foundation. The exams are not difficult if you spend a lot of time on them. Doesn't prepare you well for the final.
She's super nice and willing to help, but she's not very accessible outside of class which sucks with a large class. She requires attendance and does in class group activities. She gives lots of examples and practice resources, but the tests were hard and had low averages. Her lectures were a little boring, but had good information.
After taking her class in the spring, I think people do overexaggerate the difficulty of her class. She doesn't respond to emails, but she's really nice, and you can always set up an appointment with her. That being said, you should read the textbook, as her fill-in notes can be too shallow for the exam. Overall, solid choice for Chem 0110 or 0120.
Dr. Madison is very caring and really takes the time to understand/ take care of students. You do have to go to office hours to get to know her but overall she's willing to work with you. Lectures are boring as far as content but she has a dry sense of humor which is really funny. Study for weekly quizzes, do practice exams, office hours.
Probably would have failed if I hadn't taken AP Chem before - very fast paced lectures, very vague explanation of very complicated topics - be mindful if you take her 8 am that she will have tophat questions and will not post slides so you have to show up or you'll be behind - overall just an okay experience
I feel people grade her based off their grade instead of actually how she is. If you go to class and put in effort, you should be fine. Averages on exams were pretty high for a chem class. I would say her office hours aren't great and she gives a lot of homework, but I'm retaking gen chem 2 and she is way better of a professor than the first one.
She isn't good at replying to emails, but if you go to office hours she's helpful. She often forgets to post content after lectures as well as practice resources. If you study what we do and recitation and lectures you will do fine in her class. As for her homework some of it is really helpful, while some of it is just a waste of time.
My grade was salvaged by her generous curve at the end. Her lectures don't teach you anything. She won't post stuff on Canvas and doesn't give TAs the reviews. It's extremely difficult to contact her. I had to spend an immense amount of time outside of class to even pass an exam. Weekly ALEKS was torture. You hardly get to see your grades ever.
Terrible, inaccessible outside of class. I emailed her 20+ times, only responded to 2 because I had to report her to get a response. Went to her office hours and she told me 'to make it quick', barely taught or spent time with lecture material. Gives no extra practice problems, doesnt give exams and quizzes so i had no idea what material to study.
If I had not taken AP chem I would've failed. Lectures are confusing and most time is spent on practice problems. Does not accept valid solutions on tests/quizzes that are not identical to hers. She does not prepare well for ACS final and chooses to make you take quizzes and learn material not on the ACS final the last few weeks of the class.
She's not very good at answering emails or explaining concepts, so I would avoid her. Her tests are very long too and the grading criteria isn't very clear in her class. I wish that Pitt had a more solid chem department.
I would try to take chem I & II with a different professor if you can. I felt that there wasn't enough time to finish her exams sometimes because they tended to be very long and many of the open-ended questions were extremely time-consuming. She wasn't a terrible lecturer, her lectures were just very boring.
She's a fair professor. Gen Chem 2 is a hard class and you have to be willing to put the work in. She is a good lecturer and has good powerpoints, but the heavy lifting has to be done outside of class. If you do the homework well and study, you will do well on her midterms, but she unfortunately she doesn't prepare you well for the ACS final.
Everything on the midterm exams was covered by material/examples from the lecture, homework, or worksheets. Averages 60-70% fall sem. Put in the work to know how to do each problem type. Didn't post slides until she was told students with certain disabilities needed them. Wasn't accessible outside of class and was intimidating to approach in class.
Tamika doesn't answer emails, so don't bother: Go in person or zoom (if she doesn't cancel of course). Expectations for lab are impossible, expect a B in Lab. Exams tend to pull multiple concepts from that unit into one problem. The homework is a joke. Prepare to teach yourself everything. If you've taken AP Chemistry before, it won't be that bad.
I think Tamika means well, however her teaching style is just reading off the notes and doing random practice problems on the board. Everything is normalized, so you never have any idea what your grade is going to be. Homework is a ton of work for only 5% of your grade, and she's not very approachable if you need help. Wouldn't take again.
Dr. Madison is unapproachable and does a poor job of communicating via Canvas. Lectures are ok. Do the homework to do well on the tests. Exams are hard to complete in time.
So boring, no enthusiasm. She does provide note packets for each class and you only had to fill in the blanks during lecture but she does not respond to emails, would say she would post on canvas and never did, exams are application based and super hard, TA is amazing and makes this class better but no lecture slides or videos posed, bad overall.
Tamika gets a lot of hate, but if you show up to class and literally just do the practice problems, you'll do fine in her class. She can be boring at times, but she gives you everything you need to know and is honestly a really good proffessor. Her exams are exactly what you practice and do in class, and you get to drop you're lowest grade.
Tamika is nice but be prepared to teach yourself outside of class. She does tophat questions right at the beginning so if you are 10 mins late, you missed the points. She curves a little at the end; I think I was at an 85% and got an A-. I mainly watched youtube videos and hoped for the best.
I found Tamika Madison to be very disorganized and inaccessible out of class. Her fill in the blank notes were insufficient for active listening. She never answered emails and seemed like she did not care about her job or student success.
Dr. Madison is definitely one of the better chem professors. Exams are straight forward and basically same as the lectures and practice exams. She gets through all topics and it lines up with what we learn in lab. Only bad thing is ACS final is 30% of grade. I scored above 90 on all exams and got a 60 on the final and ended with a B+.
Tamika is rude and seems to take out her anger on students. She also gives difficult recitation quizzes, and extremely difficult exams. When you try to go to her or listen to lectures to learn the way she explains is not helpful, in fact it is the opposite and will make you more confused. Avoid her at all costs and learn from videos, not her.
First course I found struggling to pay attention during lectures. Neither the videos or lectures were helpful, and the ALEKS homework did not prepare you for exams, but took up a very (very) large portion of your time. Unfortunately, this is my first review that I cannot find one good thing to say. If you care about learning, avoid at all costs.
Tamika's class has its challenges, but with the right approach, you can succeed. Lectures may not be the most engaging, but focusing on practice problems and using resources like unstuckstudy AI can really help. The exams are tough, but manageable if you stay on top of the material.
Dr. Madison teaches using fill-in-the-blank notes for a challenging subject, with limited examples to strengthen comprehension. The homework is very time-consuming, as you have to teach yourself the concepts and how to solve problems. For the difficulty of this class, the teaching was subpar.
Having taken AP Chemistry, I found the class mostly review with some added depth. The guided notes were helpful but didn't fully prepare for tests. ALEKS homework was challenging and sometimes unrelated to tests. Tests were fair, and TopHat (attendance) contributed to grade. She's very quiet and not approachable esp. at 8AM. Overall, she's meh.
Her lectures are pretty good, but her exams are pretty tough. She is very friendly, but grades stuff pretty strictly. I got into this course from taking AP Chem in high school, so im not sure how much I already knew, but I found learning stuff in her lectures to be particularly easy. Also, ALEKS sucks so prepare yourself for that!!!!
I really enjoyed Dr. Madison. She is very thorough and straight to the point and has dry humor that makes lectures a little more enjoyable. She is very knowledgeable and always prepared for class and if you study and do the homework, the exams are reasonable
Worst professor I've had
worst at replying to emails. Very inconsiderate of students but expects them to be considerate of her. Never puts grades in when promised. Have a question about a quiz? Gotta wait 5-10 business days. Want to know what the equation sheet is for the final? No reply (maybe a reply after the final and grades are put in if you're lucky)
If you miss a class, you will fall severely behind, so I guess just show up even when you're sick? There's no extension on the Aleks homework that takes HOURS to complete. Her tests and quizzes are pretty easy to be honest, but I don't feel prepared for the ACS exam. My advice is to always show up and actively take notes, then study like mad.
Overall amazing professor who came to lecture every time prepared. Took time to answer students answers and made sure student were prepared for exam. Weekly ALEKS was sometimes long and tedious but helps you understand each module better. Would highly recommend
Explains material well and answers question from students well. Only issues were very long and tedious ALEKS homework, does not release exam grades in a timely manner, and quizzes are 2-3 questions long and worth 10 points, so getting one question wrong jeopardizes the grade.
Only good thing about this class is that your lowest test grade is dropped and the final isn't made by her (ACS final). Terrible grading system, you have no access to your grades until the day before final grades are due. Recitation quizzes were a mess. Harsh grader for tests. No curve for a final that has a historical average of 52%.
DO NOT TAKE. She reads off of ppts without actually teaching anything and nothing gets curved unless the class avg is below a C. You also cannot reach her outside of office hours and she never answers any emails.
Prof. Madison was alright. I felt like her lectures were decent and gave me a broad understanding of the topics but recitations are where I really solidified the material. Weekly quizzes and 5 exams but nothing too out of the ordinary - if you pay attention you'll do fine. Pretty boring lectures. TopHat every time for attendance. ALEKs is terrible
She assigns ALEKS homework that will have nothing to do with class material. Tests also worded differently from class material. As someone who loves/excels in Chemistry, I cannot believe how poorly I did in this class. Told me in office hours I just need to ace everything else to pass instead of offering me help options. Wont respond to emails
there are 4 exams 1 can be dropped, exams were harder than the ACS exam. Aleks takes really long to finish and is 10% of your grade. Quizzes are hard sometimes and grading is weird, it's also hard to do extremely well in the exams, class is not curved although she adds some points to your grade at the end. If you're ready to put in effort, take her
Pls save ur grade and do NOT take her. She barely gives partial credit on exams, only drops 1 exam, 1 quiz, etc. and somehow almost everyone failed even with a curve. It is sad that she is still able to teach when she only teaches by reading off a slideshow. RUN. TAKE ANYONE ELSE.
eh she's not the worst, i understood everything taught in class and the exams and quizzes weren't bad, u even get to drop 1 of each. i feel like she didnt properly prepare us for the final tho, it seemed so different from what she taught. it's not over if you HAVE to take her, but maybe try finding another lecturer (++ DOES offer some extra credit)
Her lectures weren't bad, as long as you attend class it shouldn't be hard to pass. Her biggest issue is availability, as she hardly responds to emails, and even when she does it doesn't help much. Also, her exams always had some errors she would have to correct in the middle of them, so be prepared. She wasn't bad per se, but definitely not good.
She was a very fair tester in my opinion. Her lectures were boring sometimes, but overall, a lot of the stuff on the tests was seen in class.
Easy professor if you have good high school foundations. Basically a terrible lecturer but the exams are pretty easy to study for.
Giving Tamika Madison a one-star review is generous. She never responded to emails. The difficulty and tediousness of the ALEKS homework were absurd. The examples provided in the lecture differed significantly from the exam problems. AVOID TAMIKA AT ALL COSTS.
The only way to get the lecture notes is to attend the lecture, ALEKS was not fun but she usually extended the deadline for it anyways giving you around 8-9 days to do it. The examples used in the lectures and in notes reflected what was on exams. Tamika is not a bad professor at all, put in a little bit of effort and you'll be good.
If you value your sanity, avoid Tamika Madison. She took 3 months to regrade a test, then gave me 0/10 on a correct answer, claiming my clear handwriting was "illegible." She had no issue reading the rest of the test, or any of my other tests for that matter. Her grading is harsh and gives little to no partial credit on longer questions.
Very good professor and I really enjoyed the guided notes lecture style. lectures could get boring but she taught the material well. people mainly don't like her cause it's a weed out course and the exams have to be hard but that's how all professors exams are
You cannot ever please everyone. To me, Dr. Madison was a great choice for chem 2. She is very clear about her expectations and derives her exams directly from the notes you are provided, no shenanigans. She is hard to access outside of classroom, but that is why she has an online reservation system for her office hours, just listen to her.
Okay yeah, she's not the best. But she explains topics pretty clearly and grades fairly on exams. However, she does write the exams herself and they tend to be more difficult than practice problems. You have to put in a lot of time and work in order to do well but it is not impossible.
Aleks, time consuming but its good practice.N ever fell behind in lecture. Fill in the blank notes and explains things clearly during lecture. Chem 2 is hard, its gonna be hard regardless of the prof. 4 exams, drops ur worst one. Only complaint is that the ACS final is 30% of ur grade. and hard to access outside of class.
She isn't widely liked. slow lectures. Tough & fair grader. Exams aren't terrible given how hard chem 2 is in general. ACS final worth a large portion of the grade and people tend to get 50s or lower on it. Curves the final grade so you don't really know if you're going to pass or not until the very end. She uses tophat and drops one of four exams
I think that Dr. Madison is underrated. Her class is pretty straight forward, she has 130 pages of fill-in-the-blank notes and offered extra credit. I didn't take gen chem 1 at pitt and did fine in her class, her exams are straight forward and she clearly tells you what you need to know. Her final is the ACS which was hard, but she curves.
pros: -fill in blank notes -she seems like she tries her best -1 of 4 exam grades get dropped -no lab cons: -doesn't post slides -ALEKS homework took years off my life -never responds to emails in time -TAs aren't great -mandatory attendance -8AM I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt but.. if you can take a different prof
I have respect for Dr Tamika for she do very challenging degree of chemistry but she cannot teaching of the students who don't know chemistry well. Many days leave confuse. When try contacting her about question for exam she ignore. Exam not what was teaching
Despite the fact that class is over an hour long, she makes you take the exams in 50 minutes giving you 5 minutes per question, which is nowhere near enough. She is super rude to you if you do not finish in time. She makes you feel bad about yourself for asking her questions about the material as well.
You can make appointments and visit her office in addition to office hours. I really appreciate how her lectures are structured: Introduce concept, give context, explain problems/questions, practice problems/questions. I think people judge her too harshly. Her class is as difficult as any chem class. Her exam grading is quite graceful.
The most overhated professor at Pitt. She's very intelligent and it shows in her lectures. The class is organized with excellent resources to prep for exams- Pearson HW (tedious but helpful), practice exams w/ keys, and extra practice problems posted pre-exam. Recitation worksheets are helpful and I recommend using your TA as a resource as well.
I am disguisted by what I have read regarding a Pitt student who was hit by a car and was not allowed any accommodations. PROFESSOR Madison's actions are ridiculous needs to look herself in the mirror. Absolutely terrible what this student had to go through. I have had her this first semester, and she is just a rude person.
avoid...that's all I have to say...god please don't take her because she does not care even a tiny bit
Overall not a bad professor, maybe its because I took AP Chem so the class was a little easier for me. Her office hours did help me a bit, I wish she responded to emails more.
Lowkey goated
She overcomplicates everything for no reason and half the time gives you the wrong information for your notes. You're better off just filling in the slides and learning on your own. Don't recommend
coming from someone who did very well in this class, TAMIKA IS HORRIBLE. GENUINELY TERRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE HER. LITERALLY TRANSFER SCHOOLS IF YOU HAVE TO. DONT DO IT.
When I took this professor I found she was unhelpful when it came to being understanding for my accommodations and my life when I gave prior notice. I am unsure if this class is any more difficult than any other gen chem
The class is incredibly easy if you took a higher level chemistry course in high school. I'm not fond of her personality-wise; Dr. Madison is neither approachable nor friendly, but at the very least, remember that you don't have to like your professor to do well in the class.
i didn't take AP or any high level in high school and am still doing well in the course. people dont realize attending lectures is not going to get you an a u have to study a lot. dont blame tamika for a class that is hard. professor offers lots of office hours and online practices and holds review sessions on zoom.
Tamika is legitimately one of the most unkind teachers I've ever met. She cares not for her students and it feels like she doesn't want them to succeed. Chem is hard but she's a bad teacher and furthermore not a good person.
I have never waited longer for an email to be red, like I get we all get emailed but it's been over a month and I have sent at least 4 follow ups that insane. All because my labflow was not working a she told me to email her when it was fixed so she could open up the prepay that didn't work and she never answered!!
I really enjoyed this class, but it's not easy, so if you're expecting it to be a walk in the park this class is not for you. However, if you put in the work and effort you will succeed. You will have to study a lot and the homework can be quite tedious, but it's for your own benefit that you complete everything and attend all the lectures.
She is debatable one of the worst teachers at the school. Lectures are hard to follow, and she caters to kids who have iPads. Tests are worth almost nothing, and homework is worth even less. Used TopHat randomly throughout the year, and it was worth the same as an exam. She is completely inaccessible outside of the classroom. AVOID
if you're good at math/chem, and don't really expect to go to her outside of class, she's fine. material isn't very hard to understand, she has good review resources for exams, and the practice exams are exactly what to expect for the actual exam. lecture pace is not great, as some days she lectures really slowly while others are crammed and fast.
She sucks do not take her.
She is really nice but it can be very easy to get lost in her lectures. Also her final, which is the ACS national standard exam, makes up 30 percent of the grade. Besides that grading is very test heavy and it can become hard to keep track of everything due for this class.
Dr. Madison was an ok lecturer and I did good on the exams. Her notes are straight forward and you have a weekly quiz and hw assignments. The one thing I don't understand is how I could receive an average of an A on her exams and then for the ACS final worth 30% of my grade I find out that she didn't teach us abt 10 questions worth of material
Her class was fine and exams and tests were not too bad but she gives a final worth 30% of your grade where I found atleast 5-10 questions that she didn't teach us.
I could go on and on about why I don't like this class but unfortunately there's a character limit. Dull lectures. Lecture pace is very inconsistent. She didn't teach what we needed to know for ~10 questions on the final (which is worth 30% of the grade). Completely unreachable by email (and is pretty elusive in general). Very unkind.
I overslept for the final and she allowed me to take it late. Throughout the class, I felt that I learned everything well. Her TAs are very generous graders on exams. If I had to take chem again I would choose her.
I honestly think Dr. Madison was a great teacher. I do have a good chem background as I took CHS chem through Pitt and AP chem. She has fixed a lot of the issues that people complain about on here. You get to drop an exam and a quiz. She does use tophat for attendance but she only grades 75% of it. She is very nice and makes time for her students.
The standardized ASC final is worth the same as all other exams combined and is extremely hard to be successful on considering she doesn't teach all the concepts necessary. Homework takes hours and is worth next to nothing. She's inaccessible outside of class. Not clear about grading. Overall just avoid if possible.
Good LUCK getting a hold of her outside of class. Exams are easy but she does not prepare you for the ACS final, then just throws it on you for 30% of your grade- and its absolute dog. TopHat participation occasionally, plenty of points for homework and quizzes. Handful of better options for gen chem 1.
I found her class unreasonable. I never skipped a lecture and paid attention in class but I still found myself staying up late to learn everything on my own. Once you are familiar with the material, you will do fine on the unit exams. But don't get confident! She sets you up for failure with the final worth 30% on an exam you are unfamiliar with.
I don't even need to explain...
I honestly did not mind her class - not the most personable professor, but gave practice exams, Zoom exam reviews, recitation worksheets, and a drop for exams and labs. I didn't have AP/honors chem background, but with daily practice, I did well in the course.
She really isn't a bad professor. She's definitely not readily available outside of class and office hours but I never really needed to get a hold of her. She provides note templates that are easy to fill out and are helpful. There are weekly quizzes and an exam about every three weeks. The material isn't that hard. Tophat attendance questions.
Definitely not as bad as people says she is. You can tell she is passionate about chemistry but isn't the best at teaching it. You need to basically reteach yourself everything she does in lecture to have any chance at passing.
Absolutely the worst professor I have had. I'm not a student afraid of a challenge. I spent hours doing practice problems and actively reading the textbook. The problem? Lectures never reflected what was assessed on exams. I wanted to ask for help but she ignored all emails. Clearly has zero care for student success. I was appalled how bad this was
