This goes along with the lab which is not too great, in all honesty. A very hard class with a lack of understanding of students lives and mental healths. Honestly the worse part is the lab, especially on your mental health
Tamla Blunt only put out online lectures you could watch at your own speed in what was supposed to be a hybrid class. There was a challenging timed quiz every week and a good bit of additional course work. Be prepared for receiving no additional help from Tamla in this challenging class, no matter how many times you reach out to her.
Weekly tests, almost completely textbook work, long-winded lectures. This class was not good and I am someone with an interest in biology. Take anyone else
Lots of lectures and homework, however somehow in that she doesn't teach a thing on the quiz each week which your grade is based mostly. You need to spend hours a week finding the information in the study guide online which still doesn't correspond with the quiz question. The class makes and I'm not sure not sure how I even got a B. No office hours
I know that everything is hard right now with COVID, but this course was an unorganized mess. There was so much homework every week for no apparent reason. And some of the content that wasn't covered in lectures were on weekly tests. Felt like a ton of busy work. The lab was fun though (when we were actually there).
Exam every week, sometimes over things we didn't learn. There was a lot of homework for such few points in the gradebook. The pre-recorded lectures were confusing, and my GTA seemed more knowledgeable than Tamla Blunt. I only got an A because I had a great tutor and study group. The in-person labs were the best part, the online labs were the worst.
she just reads the power-points and adds small notes, once shes done reading, she moves on so type fast. also, its hard to really learn from just the power points and a textbook.
Do not take class if you cant type fast and dont like lectures.
Zero understanding of how to properly teach a course, lecture slides are gone through too fast to properly take notes, information is thrown at you and expected to be memorized for exams without any application or reiteration. Do not take this professor if you have a job or any type of life outside of being a student, this professor does not care.
does not teach well, failing bio and this is the 3rd time I've taken bio, every other time I've gotten an A
Dont take this professor if you want to pass doesnt know what they are doing
If you want any chance at succeeding, drop this professor and wait to take the class another semester. I am a good student, I work hard and I study often. This professor sets you up for failure. If you want any chance at passing the exams, you better read ahead and teach yourself all the material. She talks too fast and has bad powerpoints.
awful. gives terrible lectures, goes through slides too fast and doesnt give you time to absorb or write down anything. throws information at you and its never reviewed again or applied until the exam, which doesnt even include what she says it will and goes way more in depth than anything in class
She doesnt know how to teach. But she knows how to do dishes
She just reads things off the slides
If the overall rating of the professor wasn't a hint, DON'T TAKE HER. Every single class is just one long lecture in which she doesn't explain a thing. She just reads the slides and expects everyone to know what she's talking about. The study groups are my only shot at passing this class, but they don't even do much.
Not accessible outside of class, skips over the important and complicated things in lecture and takes forever to explain the simple things that we all already know. Gives a very brief overview and only reads off the slides during class, the topic is not brought back up again until the exam and we are required to apply our complete lack of knowledge
only reads off of slides which often have information that isn't even correct, lectures every single period and the lectures are boring, slow, and she usually just repeats the same phrases over and over and skips over everything that's important.
Only reads off the slides, frequently trips over words and says the opposite of what she means, constantly contradicts herself, flys through slides so theres no time to write good notes, doesnt explain what we need to know for the exams, no in class review of any material- always new material, all learning happens on your own time/other materials
Exam average is 50% for the whole class. Everyone is failing and this woman wont curve the grades. You wont learn anything. Terrible never take a class from her we dont know why she is even allowed to teach here. Should be illegal.
HORRIBLE do not get her
She mearly reads the slides with no elaboration or explanation, always has excuses as to why she cannot grade work in a timely manner, gets corrected by TA's, grade is nearly completely based on tests, lectures are unorganized and confusing
literally the worst teacher I have ever had. She doesn't explain anything, flies through 60 slides in a 50 minute class, stumbles over her words, her TAs have to correct her often. The majority of the class is failing and she doesn't care. Take anyone else.
Heres the thing, this class is pretty easy, but that is absolutely no thanks to Tamala. During the lectures she simply reads the slides word for word and appears to be clueless. Dont waste your time asking questions as shell just have a ULA answer it for her and office hours are a joke. Just use her study guides to prepare for exams.
Worst professor Ive ever had. Just reads her slides which are confusing and often incorrect. She cant answer basic questions about the material. Most of her test questions are trick questions and worded horribly to be confusing. If she cancels class she uploads 2 hours of prerecorded lectures to replace the 50 minute class. Do not take.
The WORST professor Ive ever had. The exams for this class are outrageous. They are full of trick questions and make you apply a lot of knowledge that she doesnt even go over in class. Her TAs host review sessions and the material they cover are seldom on the actual test. She just takes the McGraw hill slides and reads them for lecture.
Tamla goes over slides very quickly for every lecture. Her exams contain no content related to the slides, and are full of trick questions. PICK A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.
Shes horrible. She reads directly from the slides and never knows what she is talking about
The lectures are difficult to follow, as she often mentions topics we have not covered yet. Because she goes off topic so often, we do not finish lecture and must finish it the next class and then typically don't finish that lecture either. She then assigns homework over the weekend for content we have not gone over. No point in attending.
A truly awful professor. We asked for clarification once and she didnt even know how to answer her own question. I dont think she knows what shes talking about. The class average for the past three exams have been less than a 65%. For the sake of your sanity and gpa, choose a different professor.
Blunt is one of the worst professors. Her lectures and power points dont make sense. Her tests are the hardest out of all the life 102 classes and shes not good at explaining. Only good thing is that she offers extra credit sometimes. If you have her, going to TILT and review sessions is the only thing that helps
She doesn't understand what is on her own slides. Often times, the LAs have to help her because she messed up and didn't know what she was saying. She is very vague w her info and copies it from the textbook (literally). She goes too in depth that gets you confused, but reviewing the same baseline info from before. Not helpful w answering questions
I am currently in her class. The class averages for our exams are very low and she does not curve any of the exams. She gives hours of online lectures for us to review because she is behind. If there is any way to arrange your schedule so that you do not have her as a professor, please do so.
Goes way too fast during her lectures, her PowerPoints are all pictures and no words so it is very hard to reference them. She confuses herself during her own lectures and not many resources to practice the content. Bad.
Her lectures are just her reading off the slides and the content jumps from one thing to another a lot. Her exams always have a failing average but she doesn't seem to care or go over any of the exam questions. Her study guides are useless and even if you understand what's on the study guide, her exam questions are completely different. -20/10.
Tamla Blunt is not a good professor. I believe she is a lovely individual, but she offers no intimacy with her students and seems very distant. It doesn't seem like she wants us to do well on the tests and lectures non-stop. It would be way easier to go over the ppt slides by yourself instead of listening to her ramble.
DO NOT!!! I repeat- do not take Dr. Blunt's class. For the first three tests, I scored 74, 86, and 84. That's abnormally bad for me. Between exam 3 and 4, I stopped showing up to lecture and just tried to study the textbook on my own (which is miserable, by the way). On exam 4, I scored 88. I did negative learning by showing up to her lecture. Run.
She's not awful, you just have to be able to pay attention to the lectures and she talks really fast. I would avoid getting her if you can, but she's not a death sentence by any means. If you took AP Bio you will be fine. The exams can be tricky, but you should be ok if you study and are prepared to apply your knowledge to hypothetical solutions.
By far the worst professor I have had yet, she only reads off the slides and half of the time she just confuses herself. She has study guides for exams but even if you study them the questions on the actual exam are nothing close to the study guide. The only material I actually learned for this class was during the lab. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Tamla Blunt really did not know what she was talking about during the majority of our semester. She was corrected by the learning assistants on multiple occasions and was rarely able to communicate a topic in an effective way. Unlike other professors from the same course, you are not able to bring your exams home to learn from your mistakes.
Tamla Blunt isn't helpful in the slightest and is even corrected by her own students or learning assistants. Her lectures are too fast and even she doesn't know what she's talking about. She can't explain how the sample question is right. The only thing graded is weekly homework then heavy test grades and maybe 5 points of extra credit. Good Luck!
This professor should be your last resort, for your sake don't do it
Dr. Blunt is a nice person. She gives a couple opportunities for extra credit, but that wouldn't be needed if she were better at her job. Unfortunately, she does not do a good job at all of teaching the material. She often skims over very complex topics, and when there is a matter of confusion brought up, she doesn't really help to elaborate or aid
The only reason I got a good grade was because I took AP Bio. If you also took AP Bio just make sure to attend lecture and take notes on the slides and you should be ok. If you did not take AP Bio I would try and avoid taking Dr. Blunt because she does not explain key concepts well and provides very little help with complex ideas.
Overall, just try not to get Blunt. Her lectures are dense and not easily understood, and she just rambles on forever. This class isn't as bad if you already have strong a knowledge of biology but if you're just starting out, it would be a nightmare, especially since you are mostly teaching yourself.
Okay. She is not a good teacher whatsoever. Her LAs do so much work for her including writing the exams when she forgets. I've tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but our exam averages are failing. So many people have brought this up to her, but she does not seem to care.
Do NOT take this class with Professor Blunt if you can avoid it. She talks and rambles in lectures, and it can get really boring. Her exams have material not covered in her lectures, so beware if you do have to take her to read the textbook or learn independently. She also cancels classes a lot.
The content wasn't difficult, it was the professor. I went to help hours and she literally pulled up the slides and read directly off of them. I'm not impressed. She cancels class so much we have to teach ourselves content. Blindsides you with taking chapters off the test even though you spent hours studying. Not impressed with the professionalism
Many people in this class have not been impressed by the way the class is run but what we didn't know until now is that Dr. Blunt had major stressful events that would've taken a toll on anyone's mental health and everyday life. I don't think this semester is a fair evaluation of Dr. Blunt because of outside stress/tragic events beyond her control
Your grade is basically determined off of the 5 exams in the class. There is a couple side assignments but they do nothing to your grade. So take this if you are a good test taker.
I used to love Biology. Then I took Tamla Blunts LIFE 102 class. I am not able to judge Ms. Blunt as a person. But as a teacher I would highly recommend against taking her class. Every exam we have taken the overall grades have been in the 50's-60's. She would say we just need to do better, or study harder. If you want to fail LIFE take this class.
Tamla isn't very helpful. She just reads the slides from McGraw Hill and either goes way too fast or teaches the same thing several times. I know her husband died this semester so I feel bad but judging by her previous scores I don't think that excuses everything. I showed up every day and found outside resources and did fine but many people failed
First, I may have caught her on a bad semester. I basically taught myself this class through the text book on my own time. Information in the slides barely had anything to do with what was tested, and in lectures she just read off the slides. She gave incorrect information sometimes, and sounded like she didn't know the material herself.
Her tests have lots of concepts we haven't covered in class and make up the majority of the grade. We were also supposed to have iclicker questions as an easy way to get points, and she just completely cut those out of the curriculum (100 points that won't count towards our grade anymore) class test average is 50, she doesn't do anything about it.
I wouldnt recommend taking this class at all. The lectures don't even cover half of whats on the exams. Im a straight A student, all my other classes are As but with no a lot of previous experience in Biology this class what extremely difficult and time consuming. None of the exams are curved and there isnt a lot of course work graded.
I know Professor Blunt had a difficult semester with her husband's passing, but it seems these negative reviews have been repetitive for a couple of semesters now. -you are not able to bring your exams home to learn from your mistakes. -Had to correct herself multiple times because she was wrong -Failed every test -Stuff in lecture wasn't on test
Tamla is a nice person but overall not a very good professor. She reads the power points and a few times would explain a concept wrong, then tell us it was wrong, but then not correct it for us. Once I realized how bad lectures were, I stopped going to class and instead watched other instructors lectures on YouTube. I did fine after that.
When I tell you to run from Tamala Blunt I mean RUN FOR YOUR LIFE !! she quite possibly is the worst professor I have ever had and didnt make my first freshman experience good at all. I barely passed with a B- and thats only because I got help from the department of biology who DIDNT EVEN KNOW SOME OF THE QUESTIONS SHE WAS ASKING ON TESTS.
Guys I mean it, don't take this course with Tamla unless it's necessary. Her visuals on her slides totally suck and are indecipherable, the tests have awfully worded questions, and her lectures drag on and on with useless information. My advice if you're already scheduled to have a class with her, drop out and get someone else next semester.
absolutely horrible professor! It feels as if she truly didn't know what she was teaching and why, her tests have horrible wording and the questions make zero sense. If you want a semester full of crying stressful nights and many many MANY tutors trying to reteach you the material then take a course with blunt.
This professor should be your absolute last resort. You will get more info from reading the textbook and looking and the slides on your own than being in class. She teaches very fast and often does not even cover important topics. Do not choose her as your professor!
This professor is anything but engaging or well-versed enough to answer complex questions beyond regurgitating slide presentations. This class is basically entirely self-taught despite covering complex biological concepts incredibly fast.
Incompetent. Very likely if I picked someone off the streets they could do the same job and the job better than Tamla Blunt. Least engaging professor I have had and the material she reviews in class is neither on tests or understood by Ms. Tamla Blunt.
If you plan to take biology do not take it with Tamla Blunt. Biology in itself isn't very hard, but the lectures are practically useless and I end up teaching myself the material. She will waste time in lectures talking about random things that never apply to tests or assignments. She has participation points but doesn't grade them half the time.
Goes through slides without explaining them. Went to another professor for the same class and sat in on her class and it was night and day difference! do not recommend Blunt. Tests every Sunday.
Unless you are on your knees for a bio class, do not take biology with this professor, especially if you don't know anything about biology. She goes through slides too fast and doesn't even attempt to make class engaging. If it wasn't for the in-class assignments, I would stay home and take notes off of the Powerpoint slides.
I showed up to lectures for about 10 weeks before I finally stopped coming; the lectures were very boring and Tamla would read directly off of the slides, which usually had incomplete information. I feel like I would be better off if I just taught myself for the full semester. I tried, but at a certain point it's just not worth attending lectures.
Blunt just reads off slides that are posted online but still makes you show up. She has weekly quizzes, one time I went to my TA and asked her why I was marked wrong on a question and she said "I'm not sure, I would have answered the same way as you, you should drop it though, even if Blunt was wrong she won't give you the points back"
All of the reviews about her were right. She demands no attention and doesn't make her lectures enjoyable at all. After I got my participation points it was hard to go.
She's a really nice person, but not a great professor. As the other reviews stated, she reads directly from the slides, doesn't seem to know the content, and leaves a lot of important information out. Finding the motivation to go to class was impossible, and I feel like I learned more by teaching myself from the textbook rather than going to class
If I could rate this teacher lower I would. I learned nothing from this teacher, most of the learning I did came from our textbook or the connected Lab. This teacher would only read off the given PowerPoint slides, which often had little information relevant to the weekly quizzes. Her tone was flat and you could tell she didn't enjoy teaching.
Makes no attempt to make lectures engaging. Gave up on going to class halfway through the semester because I was getting absolutely nothing out of it and it seemed like she didn't enjoy teaching. Lecture slides are a garbled mess and exceptionally difficult to follow. I ended up withdrawing and I'm gonna retake the course with someone else.
You can tell she is not interested in what she is teaching at all. Makes lectures boring and difficult to attend, esp. b/c you only need to attend like five lectures before your attendance points are maxed out. Did not have a single exam before the final, and could not say one thing I learned from the class. I do not recommend.
as awful as this class was, its really easy with professor blunt. take her if you just need credits over with and dont care much about the content. tests are online, including the final, are pretty easy. lectures are heavy and hard to follow. there participation n class so i would go in every class, paying attention does not matter if you dont care
If it weren't for the quizzes and exams being online, open notes, I probably wouldn't have passed. I did not use online search engines or websites, but knew many who used Chegg and the like to pass. She tests and quizzes on material not really covered in the text or lecture, which makes the class difficult. The class often has a grading curve.
She literally waited until the last day of the semester to grade anything. I had no idea if I was doing well or not in the class. 0/10, waste of my time.
If you ask questions, she does not confidently tell you the answers, her TA's nor her were any help especially during study sessions. She gives quizzes earlier on compared to other Biology professors.
Professor Blunt's lectures were nearly tolerable and pointless to attend. She reads off the PowerPoint the entire time and when kids asked simple questions about the material a majority of the time she would say "hmm I'm not completely sure". It's obvious she could care less about what she's teaching and has the most monotone voice ever
This class is infuriating in a way I genuinely can't describe. There are often participation activities in class while all she does is read off the slides; not to mention, she clearly doesn't know what material she's teaching til it's in front of her. If she's not there that day, she makes everyone go in person to lecture over Zoom. Super annoying
this entire class is so infuriating. she does not care about the material she teaches and only reads off the slides. she is test heavy despite not actually teaching anything except what you learned in 9th grade bio. for the love of god just choose a different professor
The way her grade book is weighted makes it very easy to lower your crade and almost impossible to improve it. She does not have any passion for the class content or for her students and will read monotonely off of her slides. The tests cover content not taught well at all in lecture. She does not teach content well.
If I could rate her a zero I would, her lectures do not cover detail well at all like said in the other reviews and she doesn't seem to even know the subject she is teaching well at all. The way she weights her homework makes it nearly impossible to raise your grades. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
Don't take any of her classes! She grades on attendance, reads straight from the slides, and is no help whatsoever
The only thing that happens during lecture is her reading directly off of a slideshow, but somehow attendance is graded? This could so easily be an online course. Also she will make all students come to class just to teach on zoom. If you are good at teaching yourself, she is fine, but if you actually need a "teacher", she's not for you.
RUN! Do not take this class. Tamla Blunt is terrible and only reads off the slides. If anyone asks her a question in lecture she will say "i'm actually not sure...". Entire grade is based on quizzes that are questions she does not even teach, making it impossible to improve your grade at all. I had to teach myself everything to get a good grade.
Her lectures were hard to follow, and she went into extreme detail on the tiniest things. Also the exams were online so they were made ridiculously difficult and frequently asked about topics never discussed in lecture or the textbook.
She often confuses herself (such as saying "mushrooms don't have cells, they aren't alive" then discussing it to herself for 5 mins). The phrases "as you can see" and "again, this is easy to understand" are repeated so much that it takes away form learning. Lecture slides have so much text and she reads right off the slides instead of explaining.
If you value anything at all, don't take this professor. She doesn't teach anything, just reads directly off the slides and often confuses herself. Acts like everything is super easy to understand and doesn't teach anything thats actually on the tests. LAs will teach more than she does. Teaches over zoom very frequently. All HW & tests are online.
Blunt is one of the worst teachers I have had in my entire life. She has tests every other WEEKEND online worth 100 pts each, and a significant portion of your grade comes from these. She only reads from the slides, and tells students she doesn't know the answer to their questions without fail. Worst academic choice of my life was taking this class
Professor Blunts lectures are incredibly difficult to follow. She has attendance assignments almost every week, lecture slides are incredibly wordy, and she only ever reads off of the slides and seems to not even know what she is talking about. I highly recommend not taking this professor. As well as the fact there are exams every other weekend.
Professor Blunt is very nice but she is a terrible teacher. Her lectures consist of her reading off slides which are incomplete. It is hard to learn as you either have to choose between listening to her and not taking notes or vice versa. LA review sessions are incredibly helpful and are the only reason I passed with a B.
Blunt is genuinely a nice professor, just not great at teaching. She reads off her slides, zooms through the presentations, and anytime you ask her a question you can almost always expect a "Hmm, that's a great question!" and never get an answer. But her class is an easy A since tests and final are online, and sometimes in-class participation pts.
She is nice enough but reads from the slides and goes super speed. However, you can pass pretty easily since the tests and quizzes are all online. She does random participation things a least once a week though so show up to class.
I don't think I really learned anything from class all year--she frequently contradicted herself and the textbook, went too fast through the slides, and didn't really answer student questions. If you like to teach yourself, this is a fine class, but if you're new to biology, I wouldn't recommend. She seems nice as a person outside of class.
I did not learn anything in this class; I had to teach everything to myself. She is definitely a professor that reads off of the slides and does not attempt to make learning fun or beneficial for students. A lot of the times the quizzes did not make sense either.
very easy A, almost too easy
