Lectures make you want to cry because they are so boring. She reads straight off the slides and somehow manages to still say stupid things that are completely obvious.
Just took the first midterm and got a B. It was very easy. Only reason I did not get an A was because I only studied the night before the exam. I did not use the book. MOSTLY everything that is on the exam was said in lecture so write everything down Lots of points outside of the 3 exams so even failing midterms will allow you to pass the class
She is a terrible lecturer and always says "um" while she's taking which makes her seem unknowledgeable of what she is talking about. She also tries to assign seats and do group activities in a 400 person lecture which never works. She basically just reads off of slides and still doesn't make sense. Only went to class to get participation points
I personally enjoyed Dr. Bullwinkle. Her midterm questions are more application based, so you actually need to know understand concepts. She is very willing to help in office hours and is very personable.
Alright, so I had Dr. Bullwinkle for the first half of this semester, and at the time, I didn't think she was that great. I thought she was boring and could be better. However, everything changed when Dr. Hopper came. I take back the bad things I said about her. Hopper is SO awful and makes her look like a great saint. Really, appreciate her.
Dr. Bullwinkle made great PowerPoints but struggled presenting them. Would change from topic to topic mid-slide and wasn't always super explanatory. If you take the time to use the slides after lecture alongside the book to help explain the topics then you will definitely be fine. Some test questions are in the online notecard system which is nice.
Lectures were really boring. She was unclear and repetative
Dr. Bullwinkle is a very sweet lady, but a very boring (and anxious) lecturer. I spent three-fourths of her lectures responding to emails on my computer and still did very well in the class. It was a joke. She reads directly off the slides with no incentive to come to class. I don't understand why I didn't stop attending lecture sooner.
Bullwinkle makes great power point slides and is generally pretty easy to understand in lecture. As long as you generally have some idea of what's going on and remember a little but from the intro Bio courses you should be set. Exams were extremely manageable.
A nice lady, and easy exams. Test material comes straight from lecture slides. However, lecture is painfully boring and she just reads off the slides. Would recommend another microbio professor just to learn and retain the info. But overall, easy class and lecturer
Bullwinkle (not the bar) is a decent lecturer, but she pretty much just reads straight off the slides. Honestly, don't feel bad if you skip lecture every once and a while because she posts the slides and they are pretty detailed and easy to study from. Also Hitchcock 131 is also great for naps... completely unrelated though
This class was terrible. She reads directly from slides and says "uhhh" a lot. Also told us not to study for certain things on the exam that she ended up testing over. Her slides are overcomplicated and confusing. She is NOT helpful to learning the material. Just throws it all at you and expects you to know everything. Terrible class.
Friendly professor and caring. Attendance not mandatory; she reads straight off the slides. If you study each slide and double-check the book for extra info, you will do fine on the exams.
Although the class was challenging, if your taking it it's your major so you should be used to it by now. Dr. Bullwinkle went above and beyond to help the students and was open to our opinions. I really felt like she valued us and helped us learn and grow as scientists. She definitely knew her stuff, was well organized and made a hard class fun!
She does a fine job. Memorize what she says and subsidize with the notes. Didn't use the textbook once. Homework kind of pointless but worth points.
Dr. B is one of the best profs at OSU and certainly in the Microbio department. She genuinely cares about students understanding and being able to apply the material that's being taught. If you have questions, she's more than willing to help out. Very approachable and doesn't make you feel bad for asking questions. Quizzes are tough but fair.
Dr. Bullwinkle taught a great class! She was always very helpful and accessible outside of class. The lab is challenging but at a level where it should be a majors class (personally I thought it was very straightforward). She worked around some difficult schedules and even moved some homeworks to lighten the course load.
Reads directly from the slides, so there's no point to going to lecture. If you have the lab though- its ridiculously easy.
As far as bio classes go this one was one of the easier ones I've taken. She is good at explaining things and very approachable in office hours. Her slides can be unorganized which is why you need to go to class to know what is actually important. You will be required to buy the etextbook.
She has the worst slides I have ever seen done by a professor, they each have maybe three words on them if you're lucky & the rest are pictures that half the class doesnt understand. When studying for her exams you have BAD slides about a topic & are then expected to know everything about it for the exam. Book required but doesnt help with studying
Overall, if you just memorize the slides (she posts them online) it should be an easy A. Attending lecture can be helpful to learn what she focuses on, but not attending would't affect your grade that much. Online homework is easy, but not worth many points. Lab can seem overwhelming at first, but is mainly participation (no lab reports like chem).
She gives very clear lectures. I liked her a lot as a person too. Still had to read the textbook, but exams weren't too bad. Not a lot of points in the course, so that makes getting a good grade hard. Really enjoyed the content and lab was super easy and fun.
it's hard to avoid reading off of slides in micro; i thought dr. bullwinkle was perfectly fine in that aspect. he seemed like she cared about our learning and our success, and i learned a lot. the class structure requires hw from the book. i don't really think you need to read to do well on the exams but you need it for the hw.
This was my favorite class I've taken as part of my degree because Dr. Bullwinkle makes it super easy to understand what's going on and is really clear about what's going to be on the exams. Also, the exams are incredibly fair.
i've seen reviews that said she read off the slide a lot or said umm a lot but those were from 2 years ago so she must have drastically changed because just the other day I was thinking to myself how great of a presenter she is. Everything you need to know is on the slides. i crammed the day before the exam and got a good grade just from the slides
Dr. B is an amazing instructor and she is very very sweet! Her lab really is the climax of the microbiology major and it's heavy genetic and biochemical basis. Her three midterms are difficult and rely heavily on knowing the experimental rational, and her homeworks are tricky, but she is more than willing to help her students succeed.
Dr. Bullwinkle is straightforward with her expectations. Follow her suggestions, figure out her style, and put in some work and the class should go smoothly.
Prof. B was very mediocre. It's hard to pay attention in class or find what she is saying remotely interesting because she just reads off the slides and doesn't really answer questions when they're asked (gives a very general/unsure answer). Make sure you study the slides & look into things you don't fully understand (Don't bother with the booK.
I thought this class would be a lot more difficult from the things that I have heard people say. Bullwinkle was a good professor and if you go to class then you wont have an issue with her or the material. She gives some examples in class that will be on her exams. The mastering assignments are an easy way to study and actually learn the material.
I liked Dr. Bullwinkle, she seemed really nice and she enjoyed teaching. Her material was just really dry and boring, and she wasn't very interesting to learn from. She reads directly off the slides and doesn't elaborate, so it's incredibly difficult to listen to. The MasteringHW is a great way to study though!
when i asked a lot of people about this class they made it seem very hard and it really isn't. Regarding Dr. Bullwinkle, you can 100% skip class and do well on her exams because she goes right from the slides. However, about Dr. Mia, if you dont go to class you are screwed, she uses a lot of her examples on exams. Lab exam can hurt your grade.
Dr. B was okay. She read a lot of the material off the slides, but she was always quite clear on her expectations when it came to what we needed to know. Exams were difficult but quite fair. The class is fast paced and her lectures could get mundane, but it could definitely be worse. Lab is useless and barely related to lecture, but a grade booster
Was expecting hard class and hard professor from reading on here. Dr. B is one of the best profs I've had at OSU. Makes otherwise seemingly difficult material easy to understand. Does give unannounced extra credit so I recommend going to lecture. Usually does out of class review the day or week before exam, highly recommend, good time for questions
Great professor! She makes her exams off of her powerpoint and not from book. Exams were vary fair and not super difficult. You need to study but it not a horrible class. She is fair and throws out questions that don't make sense or weren't written well. Also does unannounced extra credit so go to class. I would take a class with her again!
Doesn't prepare students for exams, doesn't give good slides, doesn't explain things long enough. Is not clear what she wants us to learn.
She is a fair professor. I enjoyed her section of the class a good amount, as she kept it interesting. The exams weren't too difficult, but did require studying. Studying a decent amount resulted in doing well. Going to lecture and listening definitely helped, as the exams are based off of the PowerPoints.
Dr. B was good, but some of the exam questions were somewhat vague and hard to understand. I found that reading through lectures until I understood every concept was helpful.
She was very knowledgable about the subject, but her tests are very challenging. You need to be prepared to work for your grade. It is very important to go to lecture as she mentions things there that are on the exams, Practice the online modules, tophat, study each week and you will most likely get an A.
Dr. B seemed knowledgeable and willing to help her students! She tended to read off the slides for her lectures, but the exams seemed to be based on the content included in the slides. The exams were fair, but a little bit ambiguous at times. She offered 3 points of extra credit during her half of the course!
Let me make this easy for you. Avoid this class at all costs Shes an amazing person but teaching isnt for this lady. She reads off slides. Her tests have no correlation to what she teaches. Unnecessary top hat questions. Just dont please take micro somewhere else
She is a terrible professor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Don't even bother listening to her in lecture half the stuff she says she doesn't even test on. Pay attention to materials on slides that are written in very small font. I was really excited to take this class but she made it boring., dry, and uninteresting. Book teaches you more than she can.
She's a decent professor who cares a lot for her students. If you show up to lecture, take notes, and stay on top of the material, this class is not difficult. There is a lot of material, but Dr. B is willing to sit down with you in office hours which I highly recommend going to. She's the sweetest person and great professor overall.
Dr. B is good! She is clear about expectations and makes sure that all info is on the slides- attending lecture is a must to help solidify concepts! She is very kind and helpful in office hours, and will do everything she can to keep the course fair and doable. You definitely have to put in work, but she is clear about what is expected.
Her exams are next to impossible. Do not take!!!! Shes testing on stuff she did not review in lecture, and the questions are worded terribly and confusing.
Dr. B's exams have nothing to do with what was talked about in lecture, and are impossible with the time crunch. She clearly doesn't care that her students do well, and does not care that we are all under a lot of pressure with classes being online. Honestly one of the worst professors I've had. do better Dr. B.
Her lecture material does not reflect her exams. She is very fast paced during the lecture and does not do a great job with explaining the concepts.
- You should read the book instead of relying on the lectures - Exams and quizzes are badly worded and a minute per question - Can't see the questions you missed or how you did compare to the rest of the class - No exceptions for emergencies for exams and quizzes even in a pandemic - Exam content is different and more difficult from lecture content
Required a make-up exam within a week of a death in the family and offered no leniency on this (the death was from a parent very suddenly and proof was provided within the mandatory three days). The makeup exam was in essay format while the original was multiple choice, and she told me this was fair. She made a traumatic situation worse.
Pay attention to lecture videos and go to OH (40-50/ 700 were there and she's very understanding - never made me feel stupid for asking Qs). Don't read the book - do the exercises she gives you and think about how concepts link together and big picture. Fairly straightforward to pass but hard to do well in.
Honestly did not care about students. Hard exams for material that was never covered in pre recorded lectures or slides. Horrible professor. It is sad she is the only one who teaches this class.
She is nice, but her exams are a little bit on the harder side and she her lectures are pretty long for each section. I would recommend going to her review sessions because there are always test questions regarding the information she goes over then.
She is the more difficult of the two professors who teaches this class. It's not the material but she has an inability to convey complex scientific concepts where students can understand it. Read the book. Exams are very ambiguous and don't have much to complete. An exam example is "Respiration requires" it's not what you think.
She did not teach the concepts well. She could not explain the complex concepts well and left me more confused. Her lectures were very lengthy as well.
I had Dr. Bullwinkle last semester in the spring of 2021 and Im not going to lie, but she was a pretty good professor. She is extremely nice and caring but definitely makes you earn your grade. Take good notes and take pictures and you will do just fine in her class.
Dr. B is amazing. Her exams are detailed, but manageable as long as you understand the details of topics taught in lecture. Book is not even required, especially if you go to office hours and pay attention. Not to mention, she is very caring and patient if you do have questions.
I wish she went over the labs before making us answer questions on the material. Shes very helpful, nice, and friendly. The material is just hard to grasp and she doesnt quite help by making exam questions hard to grasp either. The exams are set up for a lecture class, not a lab class.
Dr. B literally gives you exam answers in the lectures, so just take good notes during the videos and go to her office hour review sessions. If you do these things you literally cannot get below an A on every exam. When people say her tests are hard, it's only because they most likely never took notes.
I found her lectures very interesting to listen to, the course work was just the usual amount not anything terrible. As long as you take good notes you will be fine for the exams in my opinion.
The class is flipped format, so the lectures are watched on an asynchronous day and then material is gone over/quizzed on TopHat during in person days. Her prerecorded lectures were extremely long, and did not respect the students' time. Her tests were easy, came directly from notes, and there's 2 drops. She did not give the answers you got wrong.
Had her for first half of MICRO4000.01. Listening to lectures and taking thorough notes for studying is key to doing well. TopHat questions seemed a little unnecessary as it took up class time. Quizzes/tests are all on Canvas, but questions are worded weirdly and some topics weren't really discussed in lecture.
The quizzes definitely brought down my grade but overall having the option to drop a quiz and a test helped bring my grade back up. Make sure you watch the lectures and take good notes, I usually watched the lectures twice to help me. Her in person review sessions are SO helpful she makes sure you understand the material.
I enjoyed Dr. Bullwinkle, however, I did not find her lectures to be very helpful. Would highly recommend reading the textbook! Her quizzes and tests were somewhat challenging but very doable if you study well. She also offers some extra credit!
she's a relatively good professor but you really won't learn anything because she talks so fast. even her recorded lectures are done so quickly you have to listen to them on 0.5x speed. her tests are really difficult be she claims they are fair, which they kind of are if you think a 50% average on all the exams is a fair grade.
Dr. Bullwinkle really wants students to succeed in the course and gives students the tools to do so. Lecture slides were well-organized. Exams could be a little vague in spots. Generally very passionate about the course material and about helping students succeed academically.
Dr. Bullwinkle is a good professor and passionate about what she is teaching. If you read the slides thoroughly and have a good foundation of the material, you should do very well on the exams. Material for this class isn't difficult but can be quite dense for certain chapters. The lab portion was also fun and very very low stress.
Great professor and person. Very useful slides and explained content very clearly. She teaches the first half of the class and did very well. I wish she taught the whole semester. If you memorize everything on the slides it wouldn't be hard to get an A.
I have never studied so much for a class in my life and not have my grade reflect it. Not to mentions she flys through lectures and her tests purposefully try to confuse you.
I liked Dr. Bullwinkle as a lecturer. I feel that if you pay attention it was not hard to do well in the course. Really enjoy the lab portion of this course as its very starightfoward and really fair. Exams can be difficult if you dont study as its a lot of memorize the slides. This class has been on the back burner for me and I have been fine.
Dr. B is a much better lecturer than Dr. W so enjoy her lectures before they switch. Asks very fair questions on the exams, just make sure you understand what she explains in lecture (memorize what she tells you to - I made a quizlet) and review her tophat and mastering homework.
Dr. B was a great lecturer! She made the information easy to understand, and offered various was to study the material. She makes it very clear what will be on the exams, and the exams are pretty fair.
I really enjoyed when Dr. B taught, she does a great job of giving you the information you need to know in the slides, and the grading is more than fair. Averages are in the 70's, but if you study you can easily get an A. This class was interesting and I learned a lot.
Dr. B is such a great professor and teaches the material very well. Her exams are always fair and it is easy to do well if you know the information. She is always willing to help out and is reliable when it comes to answering emails. It is a shame that she has to teach the class with Dr. Wetzel. Dr. Wetzel truly ruined microbiology for me.
I was anxious about this class before taking it. However, I ended up loving the class. We had 5 exams during the semester, which is a lot. But I preferred frequent exams with lower percentages over less exams that weighed more. Lab was also very helpful with keeping your grade up. One remark is that she reads off the slides.
The exams had too much content and there were 5 exams. Lectures were difficult to follow and heavy on powerpoints.
Lectures cover LOTS of material, but she's very clear on what needs to be memorized for exams so you can get away with not studying extremely minor details. Bullwinkle is tough but she wants you to pass. I'm not the kind of person who's super smart or has time to spend hours studying everyday and I still got an A on both of her exams. It's doable!
Dense lectures that cover a lot but she's a good teacher! She gives you good information on what will be covered on the exam, and explains slides thoroughly.
TA's did most of the grading and she wasn't particularly kind
Dr. Bullwinkle herself is pretty nice but doesn't always explain concepts well and her exams had me questioning my life choices. Doesn't post lecture recordings for some reason. LOTS of memorization so make sure to start studying early (do not start learning material the night before exams plz). Lab for this class is long but not difficult.
Professor Bullwinkle was overall a great professor. Her lecture slides were easy to follow, and she was good lecturer. Overall, the quizzes were hard to ensure students are thoroughly understanding the material. The exams were straight forward questions. She provided a lot of different resources to aid and gave extra credit on quizzes and exams.
Really engaging lectures that make hard material much more understandable than any other stem class I've taken. She assigns a very fair amount of work outside of class including lab and everything I did outside of class helped me learn the material well for exams. She is very caring and helpful when students ask questions. Knows her field!!
The course was dense, and at times could be difficult. Requires understanding of the material & not memorization. Dr. B. really cares if her students were learning, that being said she's not going to put in more work than you, so study! She's very accessible outside of the class! Fantastic lecturer, one of the better professors I have ever had.
Dr. B is a great professor. She makes it clear what is on the exams and how you should approach the exams. There is a heavy amount of content, but you're given enough examples of what you should be learning for a good grade in the class. The course itself isn't memorization heavy, so be prepared to understand the why something happens, not what.
I disagree strongly with the negative reviews given to Dr. B. Yes, the lectures hold a lot of information, none of it is inhertly hard though. Don't cram for these exams. Dr. B does a great job telling you what she wants you to get out of each slide. Pay attention to the top hats she gives and the concepts she repeats. I learned a lot!
I really liked Dr. B. She was phenomenal. I missed an A just by a few points, but I guess it is not that bad. As long as you study to understand the concepts not just memorize them, you'll be fine. The lab exercises are fun albeit long. Go to her office hours. You should focus on the lab notes and the objectives from the manual for the lab quizzes.
She's great. She teaches the first half of this course and explains things very well. She breaks it down to basic understanding. She'll tell you what things to focus on for the exam and the type of questions to expect. Some trick questions but overall pretty good I thought. If you've taken bio1113 then this class is much much easier. & lab is fun.
This class has time management /planning problems. It needs to be a lecture say once a week plus the two days in lab as the professor is trying to present content in the middle of the lab time. Additionally, there were multiple days where most students went well over time and the TAs said that it happens every semester for those specific lab days.
This lab course in my opinion was very unorganized, and stressful. There is not much background taught on the lab protocols that are done in class so you kind of have to teach yourself and study a lot so you know what's going on at all times. The lab notebook on OneNote we used was okay, I've had better in other lab courses. TAs are tough graders!
Dr. B is THE best professor I have ever had at OSU. She helped me through things in my personal life and offered to help me study. Her labs are also so much fun!!
Honestly not a bad teacher. She was chill best way to pass the class and do well figure out your study strategies. Flash cards will help. Have to pay attention in the class and need to put in the time but overall she was chill. Some might say she goes a tad bit fast but doing outside review will definitely help. DO NOT EXPECT ROUNDING OF GRADE.
