As long as you do the speeches you will pass the class. Instead of earning points for going to class you lose points for not going. She makes no attempt to meet with students when they request it. If you miss class at all don't expect a good grade.
She really didn't help me much. She is very hard to argue with and it seems as if it is her way always. I struggled a lot in her class.
Grades far too hard for a 100 level class. Even though I came to class every day, got B's on all speeches I did not end up doing as well as I wanted to in her class. Never makes it clear as to what she expects from you to earn an A
She is very clear in what she wants. follow the rubric and you will succeed. She makes you write 2 papers using vocab words and such and speech topics are pretty generic and can be made fun. Overall good experience in her class but like mentioned before you have to attend every class--no option otherwise
She is a very good teacher!! I don't know what everyone else is talking about! She makes you do four speeches and two papers but she is an easy grader! She also has quizzes every week but there really easy if you just pay attention in class! Take her!
I hated this class, unless you mimic her exact speech pattern during your speeches don't expect to get a good grade - makes no attempt to work with students nor take individual differences into account when grading
Tammy is friendly, nice and helpful. She's a very fair teacher and is easy going.
INCREDIBLY HARD GRADER. you need to follow EXACTLY what she wants. very friendly person but wayyyy to hard of a grader.
Do not take this professor. For a 100 level introductory public speaking class, she grades as if you are giving the State of the Union address. It doesn't help that her teaching styles match more of what I would expect from an elementary school teacher. Gives a rubric for speeches but it is still impossible to get an A even if you follow it
Really friendly and has good class discussions. There were 4 quizzes, with half online half in class, and 4 pop quizzes that were open-note based on chapters assigned. Most points come from speeches but I feel that she grades those pretty fairly. Overall, good teacher to take.
Takes A LOT of examples from students. Hearing personal stories from 6+ classmates every time she opens up to discussion is WAY too much. After two examples, we get the point. Move on. Most of the class is all discussion, and she doesn't cover everything in the text. I never did any reading, but I scored 30/40 on all tests. Easy enough.
I had her for persuasion. Best teacher Ive ever had, I am incredibly lazy and I put in effort and am getting a B+. If you try decently hard and study for her exams easy A.
I had her for conflict resolution. Amazing teacher and person. She makes it so easy to learn the information. Wonderful lady, take her class!
Tammy is a great teacher! Her lectures are always very interesting but she expects the class to participate. Speeches aren't too bad although she does grade a little tough for a 100 level class. As long as you are prepared for her pop quizzes (you can use notes) it's an easy class. You will utilize everything learned for the rest of your life!
Nice lady, typically respects her students. Sometimes she seems too uptight... on a positive note, you never have to attend her classes and late work is accepted until the end of semester!
Very harsh grader and not helpful. Nice enough but she wont go out of her way for you.
Nice teacher but she cares WAYY too much about typos. I got half off an assignment because of typos/ incorrect comma use. assignments arent hard nor long but shes too tough of a grader
She's an overly harsh grader, which is really something you don't want in a speech class. The reading quizzes force you to read a little bit.
Tammy is fairly tough to rate. She's a nice person and a good teacher, but she grades very harshly. I think she thinks harsh grading helps us, but I think her large ego has something to do with it too because if something isn't done exactly her way, she won't grade very highly. Don't take her if you want an easy A.
Seems like a nice teacher at first, but you'll find out fast enough that she grades harshly, especially on attendance and tardiness. She will not go out of her way to help you succeed and therefore she fails at her job.
Do not expect an easy A. Lots of work put in will not always result in a good grade. She is a harder grader so if you do not want to work hard in a comm class do not take her because she treats it as a legit class. Reading is necessary to pass the tests and speeches need a lot of thought.
Very specific with what she wants & if you do not follow the specifics you will not get a good grade. HUGE group project, spans over a couple months- you do not pick your group. Tests are difficult and come directly from the book & lecture. She does not use powerpoint/visuals. Strictly verbal lecture.
Tammy is one of the best professors I have had at Whitewater. I took her listening behavior class and I would recommend it to anyone who needs any extra class. She makes the class and lectures very interesting and you learn a lot. She allow you to miss up to four classes but I wouldn't because everything that is on the test she talks about in class
The online quizzes were hard. Speeches are really easy to give. Lectures drag on sometimes.
She taught big lectures every couple weeks, but we were mostly split into sections of 30ish students and taught by GIAs. Attendance is mandatory, mainly because there's short daily presentations. Super easy, even if you're awful at public speaking, if you show up and participate, and do the very few homework assignments, you'll pass no problem.
The class is taught in a huge lecture hall but splits up into 'labs' which are taught by GIA's. Four speeches total and five quizzes. Speeches are easy if you follow the requirements. Attendance mandatory, with allowed three skips. Quizzes are difficult but I found them on quizlet. Put in some effort and it's not hard.
I had Professor French for Speech 110 and she was great. We had a big group for the lecture component, but then we were in smaller groups for speech work. I would definitely recommend her.
I think that Tammy French was a pretty good prof and I liked how she was really clear about what we needed to do for our speeches. There's a group project, but you get a couple of months to complete it. I would recommend this prof and I was glad that I chose her for one of my first freshman classes.
The class is taught in a lecture hall but splits up into smaller labs of about 25 kids, which are taught by GIA's, for your speeches. There are 4 speeches and 5 quizzes. The speeches are easy and everything is laid out for you through an outline. Attendance is mandatory, with three skips allowed. Quizzes are confusing but all answers are online.
Tammy is super chill. Just show up, take notes and you'll be fine! She's a great professor :)
Don't take Tammy. She thinks she knows it all and is the best teacher ever but doesn't do anything for you. Take another professor and Comm 110 will be so easy.
Professor French is a great professor! The class consists of a few papers, incliding a research paper, some activities and exams. Overall, easy class.
Is not lenient about anything or any request. She constantly post reasons for her strict rules on D2L and isn't very understanding/accommodating.
I hate going to lectures when she is the one teaching. Class was split up in lab and lecture classes. In my opinion she is a little bit petty when it comes to the class in general.
She will take a picture of you if you try to leave class early or will send another teacher after you. Also an extremely harsh grader. Would not recommend taking her, except she's the only professor available for comm110.
Very harsh and arrogant.
Tammy makes it seem like it's her way or the high way. Speeches are clearly outlined for what you need to do and a gia grades them rather than herself but if u mess up even the slightest thing points get taken off. If ur looking for an easy A don't take this course take another Comm
I found her to be a very easy grader. Her paper's length requirement is short, so she doesn't promote adding a bunch of fluff. You are simply allowed to write content that is important and move on. She is a fair grader as long as you demonstrate you know the material. She is a stickler with grading policy, regardless of circumstances, so be warned
Very good professor. Knows her material. She is very strict with attendance, so make sure you show up.
She utilizes GIA's instead of teaching herself, so it will be your GIA that really determines what you think of this class. However, Fridays were lecture day and each one was excruciatingly boring. Don't recommend, but it is hard to avoid her.
Grading criteria is clear in the syllabus, but since classes are actually held by TAs, they can be as tough or as easy as they want to be. Id get points taken off with no explanation even though it was marked on my rubric that I met the requirements. Even documented absences can be tough to get excused if theyre not university sanctioned events.
I don't know how to rate a professor that only lectures to you on Fridays and doesn't grade your work, but this class wasn't terrible. All you have to do is come to class, do your work, and turn in your work on time. Seems like common sense, but a lot of my classmates failed.
Class is mostly taught by GIA's (Graduate Instructors) except for Friday lectures that are taught by Tammy. 3 speeches that you have to give for the semester and you get to use some notecards for 2 of the 3. Final exam is the only test, the rest are quizzes that are online. Interesting class but not the best class I've taken.
To call professor French a professor in generous, as she only gives lecture a few times during the semester and dictates the rubric. The thing is, rubrics for speeches are brutal, and there is NO leniency. If you have trouble with memorization or writing constraints, steer clear.
A lot of work is required and everything was graded overly critically. Her expectations and due dates were confusing. Get the books ahead of time before class because you are going to need them.
I took comm110 online with her. She is very unclear on grading and doesn't give any leniency or compassion for situations. Seriously just try to avoid. If I hadn't already paid for the course, I'd drop it. Tammy is honestly one of the worst professors I've had here.
Not gonna lie, she straight up sucks. Absolutely no leniency on anything. Steer clear.
If you dont show up exactly on time or before time to be able to sign in, youre considered late. So if you commute at all, dont waste your time. That and if you take her Mon,Wed,and Fri course she assigns a TA with no teaching skills who just got their masters degree Mondays and Wednesdays and grade you like youre your a pro speaker. Have fun.
If youre a communications major, its really hard to get around taking one of her courses. I can tell you now if you are a communications major, good luck. She grades you on your speeches like you already have your masters in communications. I suggest getting into the forensics team before hand to be able to pass this course.
I do suggest if youre able to have this option is taking comm110 at the UROCk campus ( comm103) with either Trevor Rees or Jonathan Kelley. Her Teacher assistant can suck it. At least the professor at UROCk dont grade you like you should be in forensic or be not understanding youre late to class even by a minuet. Not worth your time!!!!
This class really depends on if you get a good GIA or not! You rarely every see professor French but when you do its lectures and her quizzes are hard
Not a lot of interactions with Prof. French. Class is roughly 100 students split into 5 sections taught by Graduate assistants. But, I missed 3 weeks of class due to a mono virus and she was very understanding and able to accommodate to my situation. The class isnt very difficult. Only 3 speeches, a handful of easy quizzes and an easy final.
Her class feels like it's made to set students up for failure. She says she's preparing them for the real world, but everything feels like a backhand
She doesn't even teach the class, so your experience of it depends on which grad student your assigned. But if you can just show up you'll do okay. You can't be even 1 minute late though. The quizes online are directly out of the book, so I would have that ready before taking them. The speeches are sucky but my class was legit with grading.
What an absolute joke of a class. I am not talking about Tammy in particular, I am referring to you Colleen O'donnel! YOUR NOT A TEACHER SO STOP GRADING SO HARD ITS A GENED. Spent hours on the material and get Cs since I didn't do exactly as the rubric says. Absolute rule follower I hope nobody gets stuck with Colleen. Get ready for the busy work.
Everyone at uww hates Tammy..I think she is a good person, very "work for it" style teacher. If attendance didn't matter and we wouldn't have outlines, everyone would pass easy. Lectures get annoying because no one cares about speaking. When we went online it was easssyyyyyyy! Not a bad prof, her grad student helpers are really fun.
A lot of you guys hate speech class and the fact that it's mandatory, but this professor is a good choice. Classes are divided into sections taught by graduate assistants, but Tammy makes sure that they know what they are doing and can give good assistance when needed. The speeches aren't that bad, besides going up and presenting. Easy-ish grader.
Told us to get a program on our comptuter that is not compatible. She told me to go to I.T. However they are closed on the weekends. I was given an F for an exam that I could not take because of compatibility issues. Dont bother taking a class with her.
I tried taking comm 110 two times with her, dropped both times because she has no mercy at all with grading and its too strict for a general education course. Doesnt bother bonding with students either. Its just a gened, not even an important one at that.
NOT ACCOMMODATING WHATSOEVER! I started this year by changing my Major. I got all new classes. I tested positive for COVID and missed crucial assignments with my Major change. I was given 0% without a shot and failed the class as a result (IM HIGH HONORS). Sent to Dean of Students for further assistance. Avoid Tammy F.'s classes if you want a shot.
Do not take French she will only add to your stress in an ongoing pandemic. Take anyone else but her.
She popped in to provide videos for classes and made her self available briefly when asking questions. She would however comment when it was convenient for her to provide her snarky comments which came off kind of offensive. She was not very encouraging and only spoke when she was in a position to keep you down. Id never take her class again.
To say she didnt teach the course, she was awful... no room for flexibility... expected to be told about unexpected things before they happened. I was on the verge of miscarrying and she still would show no mercy. Shes harsh and borderline disrespectful. Run if you can, take this course with any other professor but her!
Very lecture heavy, but she explains things really well. The notes are easy to understand. You have a paper each unit, but they aren't anything bad. Easy to reach through email if you have any questions. I recommend taking her class if you can
Had her for Comm 110, during Covid spring of 2021. Public Speaking is and always be fearful to people, but the way French teaches the class, it's just not what you want. She's very technical with your weekly quizzes and you're bound to get a C or D. The class was very structured with everything laid out for you though.
Not worth it. She is a super difficult grader in areas where it is not worth it.
Very hard grader. She is not a good teacher do anything possible to not have her has a professor.
Tammy French is not a good professor at all. She utilizes GIAs who are basically just students who know near to nothing about this class. The only time we hear from her is in lecture videos. Attendance is mandatory. If you don't show up it is very unlikely you will pass the class. I am taking this class over the summer fortunately without Tammy.
honestly the worst professor ive ever had. extremely rude and snarky. the only time she speaks outside of lecture is when she has an opportunity to make it known how little she thinks of students. never felt any respect from her. too tough of a grader. she grades like she expects us to already have a masters when this is just a pointless gened.
Tammy French is a very caring and energetic professor. The class itself is lecture heavy and attendance matters! She explains each concept clearly and carefully. I highly recommend. She made my public speaking class bearable!
Throughout the Spring 2021 semester I had been sick almost everyday. I went to the doctors multiple times but they were not able to diagnose the problem. I kept contacting Tammy and I don't think she ever believed me. I ended up getting a 20 points taken off for attendance which dropped my grade a whole letter. NEVER take any of her classes.
Youd think that with the pandemic, Tammy would be more forgiving & nicer with technological or even family issues, but no, she expects you to be perfect and have it figured out. Computer broken? Fix it. Wifi not working at your dorm? Tell it to work. Homework one minute late? No credit. Take notes on your textbook if you want to pass the quizzes.
For a only being a 100 level class this class was far more work than any of my other classes, even my 240 class. She says the tests come from the books but they definitely do not and the amount of quizzes and menial things she had us do was ridiculous.
Tammy is the worst teacher/professor I have ever had. I have never gotten under a B+ in any english class I have ever taken and I just finished my freshman year of college. She is the hardest grader and does not accept late work even if it is turned in 30 minutes late. I do not recommend her to anyone and cannot wait until my class is over with.
Never actually had tammy as a teacher had some grad student who taugh the class which she was amazing but however tammy still ran the course textbook heavy. The quizs are really hard never had a good grade on them they even said everything in the textbook is not on the quiz then why do we need the textbook speeches are easy got a A on all of them
My dad died during the semester and she didn't give me any time to grieve at all. She expected me to give a speech the next class. Would never take her. I'd personally rather see her fired. Also doesn't teach, just uses TA's to do all her work for her.
She's honestly not a hard grader. She expects what she should from students. No late homework, and come to class. She clearly explains her lectures, which she gives a lot, but they're not boring. I didn't have a GIA so she taught my class, so I got to know her better.
From what I experienced and heard from friends, Tammy is practically universally disliked by students. Hard to approach, tough grader, and very inflexible.
Very Strict does not let you have any leeway with anything. I had a GIA that was cool and let me have some leeway but without him I would have gotten a low grade for sure. Even my GIA though that Tammy was a little much sometimes especially for the final exam when she was listing off the most unreasonable rules for a COMM 110 class. Drop her class
Prof. French's upbeat attitude and passion for communications made me look forward to going to class. Gives solid feedback on speeches.
I never had an issue with Tammy and she was also my GIA. I got really sick two different times during the semester and she was extremely understanding. Easiest A out of all of my classes. Didnt study for the final and came out with an A on it. Just pay attention and do your homework
i didnt like tammy because she was very strict with attendance & her grading criteria. you HAVE to show up & do all your speeches otherwise you wont pass. i loved my GIA, he made the class enjoyable & i liked going to class, just hated lecture with tammy. overall, not that bad of a class if you have a good GIA.
Comm 110 is a gen-ed class, yet she was super picky and not very understanding. Do not miss any of her classes or your grade will suffer for it. If you go to her office to talk about your grade, she is willing to give your more points, though.
I had a good TA so I did well in Comm 110. Attendance matters (u might as well show up since ur paying for this class anyways) As long as you do the speech outlines well and rehearse a little for your speeches you will get an A. There are a few online quizzes and extra credit opportunities. This class truly isnt as bad as its put out to be.
Its kind of ironic that a professor that teaches a class on communication is bad at communication. There have been multiple times throughout the semester where she has gone "wait, what I meant for you to do was this" after we turned an outline in. Also, she made something due the Saturday at the start of spring break, which was not cool.
Yes, she does have GIA's teach her classes, but I always thought her Friday lectures were great. I'm not sure why she has such a poor rating. You do need to read your textbook. The quizzes are straight from the book, but they are online, so you can use your notes and textbook. Attendance is definitely mandatory.
Easily the worst professor I had at Whitewater. Instructions would be unclear, and then grades would come back downgraded because I "didn't follow instructions" that after going back and triple-checking the rubric were still not anywhere to be found. Very tough grader and can be very rude as well. I strongly recommend against taking her class.
I have been at UWW for two years, and Tammy is easily among the WORST professors I have ever had. Lucky for me, I had a good GIA who made class a little more tolerable. Tammy is very strict in attendance, not allowing late work, and is very condescending towards students. Everything HAS to be her way. Very inconsiderate. AVOID HER CLASS IF YOU CAN!
Avoid this class at all costs.
Quizzes are difficult, but based upon the textbook. Exams seemed fair for the material covered. This class moves quickly in terms of writing the speeches. Prof. French can come off as condescending sometimes, but explains things well in lecture. Attendance is graded
Tammy isn't your actual teacher and you'll get a GIA who teaches your actual class. Tammy only teaches the lectures. It's an easy class as long as you show up and do the work. The quizzes are super hard tho and rarely relate to the book or what you learn in lectures. There are only three speeches the whole year and they're not that bad.
Comm 110 is a brutal class, especially if you don't enjoy public speaking. The grading is brutal, with plenty of writing on top of the speeches. Tammy is not forgiving of any late work. An A is possible but far from easy.
Tammy French is pure evil
While Tammy hardly actually teaches, rather the Teacher's Assistants, the quizzes she hands out hardly follow the book and very loosely based on a combination of what you learn at the lecture and the textbook. Just try and get another teacher, I'm sure she wouldn't mind with that expensive car she drives.
Tammy is the worst professor I have had so far at UWW. She has no respect for the students and if things do not go her way they are automatically done incorrectly. Attendance 100% matters and she does not care if they are medical exempt or not. Tammy sends passive aggressive emails and will treats you like you are in elementary school.
She sent me an email congratulating me on being one of her top 5 students in my section while I have a B+ in the class. Class is unnecessarily complicated. While public speaking is skill-based, Professor French cares more about textbook definitions and attendance.
She provides a lot of information and clear grading scales. If you get a good GIA you will be just fine. Tammy French gives multiple examples of what they are looking for and how to fix it. She is also available a lot. I would recommend taking her if you are looking for a challenge. Attendance is so important so please go if you can!!
She is sweetheart of a professor. Inspired me to be an adult. Do your work, show up for class and you will do well.
People who don't like her just don't like to show up to class
I genuinely do not understand why other people hate Tammy so much. She has been nothing but kind to me and is always easy to talk to. She is passionate about what she teaches and wants you to succeed. Sure attendance is mandatory and you have to do your work but crazy thought: college is work!!!
Tammy is a great professor. She is very kind and knows what she's teaching (she is a very good public speaker). My only problem is her course curriculum. It is extremely overwhelming. Required lockdown browser for homework? Seriously? This class is "The introductory level course that took up half my homework". I worked my butt off for that A.
Tammy is genuinely a sweet professor. She was always kind to me. She is just very passionate about public speaking. As long as you do the work and attend class you will pass, it is not difficult.
This class really wasn't that bad. You only do 2 written speeches the entire semester and they are spread out. The quizzes are hard, but you can fail all of them and still get a relatively good grade in the class if you do well on your speeches. Attendance is taken for credit, but you can miss a few and still get a good grade.
Tammy made me hate public speaking. It's a public speaking class that makes you take quizzes that don't relate to the actual speeches your doing in your lab part of class. She talks about things like reading the room but can't read her own classroom. She gives off super fake energy and miserable Karen vibes. The class is required for every student.
Tammy has her GIAs do all the work for her. The most difficult part of class was showing up. While she is strict with attendance, the class was not bad and fairly easy. One of the GIAs can be a real pain in the a** but other than that the class was way better than I expected it to go.
I loved Tammy's class, I think the reason most people hated it was because attendance is mandatory and because her GIA students do a lot of the work, but keep in mind she has over 200 students a semester. This class is mandatory which makes her need GIA's help. This class helped me gain confidence in public speaking and Tammy is highly respected.
Tammy isn't a bad professor, but with the class being 3 times a week and having mandatory attendance and no late work, it's just not going to be a class that the average college student enjoys. I had Rylee for my GIA, she was incredible, easy grader, easygoing, etc. The Quizzes are horrible, but the speeches weren't very hard.
Many students often dislike Tammy due to her strict attendance requirements, but I feel that many forget that she only teaches the lecture part of the class. You have to remember she is teaching hundreds of students. I found her to not only be knowledgeable in her area, but also someone who knows how to teach, and not just tell you random info.
The negative comments about her are from poor scholars. Her lectures are very good and it's a super easy class even if you put almost no effort into it. My GIA was Bhoke and he was excellent and inspiring. I can now say I am good at public speaking/presenting thanks to Bhoke and prof. French.
Does not accept late work no matter what. She had strict rules for assignments and what is expected.
I don't know why every hates on Tammy. She expects you to come to class and doesn't really accept late work, but who cares. Just do what you are supposed to and this class is fun and easy, and you know what she expects from you. I honestly really liked her because I never had to second guess what I was supposed to do.
I enjoyed Tammy's class and genuinely learned a lot! This class made me a better speaker. Tammy's nice, knowledgeable, and always willing to help. Lectures are relevant to exams. You can miss 2 classes. Late work isn't accepted. I liked that policy because that's the expectation of the real world. If you're a good student, you'll like this class!
Tammy's COMM110 class can be a challenge, but with consistent effort and engagement, you can find success. The mandatory attendance and quizzes can be tough, but the speeches aren't too bad. I found Unstuck study helpful for quiz prep.
Everyone who dislikes Tammy is simply not a good student. Tammy is EXTREMELY clear about expectations and deadlines and is more than willing to help if confused (she video chatted meeting with me at 8 PM just to clear of my confusion). She is so knowledgeable, so caring, and so willing to give feedback. She has VERY high, but clear expectations.
The class itself is not bad and she is easy to listen to. However, she is an extremely tough grader for no reason and makes the class more difficult than it should be. Exams are paper and pencil with essay questions. She is not the worst, but I've defiantly had better professors.
Tammy is a great professor. She is caring, enthusiastic, and gets to know all of her students by name. Just show up and participate, and you will do just fine. If I weren't graduating this year, I would totally take her again. The people who don't like her are likely slackers and aren't used to be held to higher standards.
Terrible. Avoid if you can.
Professor French does a great job laying out exactly what she expects on assignments. Easy to get high marks if you just follow the rubric. Class is mandatory and you'll want to be there. Speech assignments are big but your given plenty of time to get them done. She's certainly one of the best professors in the Comm dept.
She is not great for COMM 110 but is one of the best professors I have ever had for upper level Comm courses. She lays everything out and is so organized, and gives you note sheets to fill out. Show up to class and you will have no problem. She cares about her students, but will not baby them. She also gives great opportunities. Would recommend!
She addresses her "ratings," and the bad ratings she gets are from "disgruntled" students. This is the only teacher I had who uses Scantrons, they are not openbook/notes. Beware using anything that uses AI, Including Grammarly! Her rubrics are confusing; they can look like you did well, until you see the points taken for minor things. Not worth it.
