great at getting students into the material, good class

She's a great professor. She helps clarify difficult things using real-life examples. She relates to students very well. Only thing is that she expects you to do things her way and on time, always.

Professor Vigil is an undercover witch. She often tries to mask her miserable attitude with stupid jokes, and is quite condescending. She will use any chance she gets to shoot you down. Expect to hear the phrase Does this make sense? a thousand time
Horrible teacher. Mean to her students.
she's not bad
not flexible and makes a lot of mistakes marking papers.
This professor is sarcastic and mean. Her grading is either ridiculously easy or completely unrelated to any sort of known grading system. This means she'll fail everyone for the first couple quizzes. Go to office hours to be browbeaten....it's not fun
"Make sense guys?" I tallied up that phrase every class, she's ridiculous. She's overly sarcastic and mean, and she enjoys shooting down everyone's opinions if they're not textbook. Unfair grader on top of it all. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!
I heard bad things, but they were WRONG! She was great, especially considering the topic. She really wants you to get it, and she does a darn good job at making it interesting. First exam is tough, take-home exam not as bad.
Very clear professor. She doesn't like students that make asinine points. She has a ton of material to cover, so if you like to raise your hand simply to hear the sound of your own voice, prepare to be embarrassed. I learned a ton in this class.
By far, the WORST professor. She is arrogant, condescending, mean, and unfair. Going to her office hours is like going to a war--you'll come out feeling like you've been blown up from the way she talks to you. Horrible grader, and classes are unbearable.
I liked her and I think the rest of the class is in agreement. She is a fair grader- she just expects you to know how to write. So as long as you are able to string together a cohesive sentence you should be fine. She doesn't go for BS.
She says the words, "Is this making sense?" about 40 times per class over an hour and twenty minute period. I went to her office hours at the beginning of the semester and she made me feel stupid and out of place. She is very smart person and knows a ton about theory but she doesn't teach it well
She's a b****. Thats all i can say. if you are taking oral presentation to try and learn and feel more comfortable, PICK SOMEONE ELSE
I can see how people may think she's unfair, but I actually really liked her class. She is very intelligent, but somewhat intimidating. Her enthusiasm made me want to try harder. She does say "Is this making sense" about 100 times per class, but overall, I liked her a lot.
Insane attendance policy. You literally cannot miss one day of class=unreasonable. Very sarcastic yet unable to take a joke. Somewhat interesting class but she makes it more difficult than necessary.
I don't understand how people think Vigil is unfair. Her tests are SO straight-forward, the work-load is very managable. Did all the readings and tried hard but found this to be a fairly easy A. She can be sarcastic and condescending but overall good experience. Don't let other ratings scare you

Don't get on the bad side of her, she's kinda moody. Clear as a techer and explains stuff well a but b**** of a person. Get weekly readng from TA, don't go to her for any other reason apart from paper.
The class is pretty interesting. She teaches clearly and uses good examples. BUT she is condescending and often rude to students who ask for help outside of class. I have never seen a professor treat students like this. She bad-mouths other students (without using names) and can make people feel like dirt.
she is absolutely dreadful. She is most likely one of the worst professors at BU. She's arrogant and rude and thinks she's smarter than she really is. She should be fired.
This has to be the worst class I have every taken! The content would not be so bad if it weren't for her!!! Honestly, if there is any way to avoid taking Vigil I would HIGHLY recommend it. I agree with the people before me, she is dreadful, condescending, annoying B***! Don't think it will be any different from you...
Belittling and confrontational.
Horrible, she is very insecure of herself and vents through being harsh to her students. She needs a man.
She is just a rotten person in general, does not seem to enjoy teaching.
Such a disappointment. Has her favorites. Comes off as arrogant, rude and just overall mean. One of my classmates lost it after a "paper discussion" session with her and cried hysterically--it became my problem to make her feel better. I should get her salary! Not upholding COM's reputation as a leading communications school.
Easily the worst Professor I have ever had, her exam was ridiculous and she threatened an entire class of academic suspension for plagerism because we didnt site sources her way... It would help if she told us her method before the paper was due. Should be fired, just a horrible teacher in general.
Some people are meant to teach some are not. Professor Vigil is a clear case of someone who should not be teaching. I am also fairly sure she is Satan. Be afraid be very afraid.
Dr. Vigil can be quite condescending, she does not know her audience well and she has a funny habit of saying "do you understand?" more than 45 times an hour. You'd think that through teaching lots of public speaking classes she'd notice and correct this annoying tendency. It is a shame that new students are introduced to the subject in this way.
Extremely condescending, rude, and not helpful. Does not know how to teach effectively or communicate to her students. Insists on being called "Dr." and says "is this making sense?" upwards of 60 times per class. Uses threats to scare students and tests on subjects that she doesn't teach in class. Does not accommodate full-time professionals.
Horrible
This teacher is absolutely HORRIBLE. She is a rude ****, and I pity every student that will have her in the future. She should have her job taken away from her. Boston University is supposed to be a reknown university. Tammy Vigil is nothing more than a flaw to the university and should be rid of immediatley. She makes the University look aweful.
witch!!!
this professor has made my experience in the school of communications the worst thing so far in my young life. how does such a prestigious university, such as BU, hire such a cold hearted egotistical maniac Dr. Vigil, as she demands to be called should not be allowed to call herself an educator BEWARE OF THIS SICK PERSON,GET OUT BEFORE IT'S TOO LAT
OK, so she isn't the nicest professor you'll come across in your college career. But give her a little and you get a lot. Just go to class, follow instructions, cite from the text in take-home tests, and if you don't have an A, I don't understand how you are in university here.
Increasing the amount of theories covered during the semester does not automaticallly increase the quality of the class. 33% of your score comes from interpreting com theories not yet covered in class!
she really is a disappointment as a person and a teacher.
Professor. Tommy Evil. That says it all!
Take a look around she's one of the few that has 43 ratings...and they are true!!!! She should be FIRED!!! She's the worst professor I have ever had!! She gives professors a bad bad name. Please somebody FIRE HER!!! She made my life miserable! Run for your life!!!
She doesn't care if you really understand or get anything useful out of her class. She loves pushing theories down your throat, no matter what. And guess what you get graded on how well you swallowed it.. doesn't matter if you digested it or fell sick! Someone please fire her. She is EVIL !
not many grades, but not a bad class. Her tests are a bit confusing. She's also very bitter about life.
don't take it, she's a bitter joke. Her attendance policy is a joke. She hates her life. She makes comments like, "real women are a size 12-14." Her class is easy though, as long as you can put up with her
No Comments
I really liked Vigil! She's sarcastic, not bitter. Go to her office hours and get to know her--if you show an interest in the class, she'll like you. If you grade-grub, she'll HATE you. You will, however, get a LOT deeper into theory than the other 380 classes and the book is very dense. One exam, one take-home exam and one paper. Give her a try!
she was a condescending, rude, arrogant jerk. don't put yourself through it. even though i did ok in the class i wouldn't take a class with her ever again
Worst professor I've encountered in COM. She is awful. Her attendence policy is unfair (she gave me crap for missing class for my friend's funeral). Her voice makes you want to gouge your eyes out with a pencil. And you're not going to get an A. Her class is pointless. She treats her students like kindergardeners. Don't put yourself through it.
?!?! She is so underrated... She is a very nice teacher. She knows her stuff and really wants her students to learn and to be able to use class material in real life.
It's really not that bad. Just participate, don't act afraid of her, and do the readings (which are very managable). She's extremely knowledgable.
She is awful. She is one of the least accomplished professors and acts like she's a legend. She's rude, judgmental and her theories rarely have relevance or validity. I didn't learn a useful thing in her class and her assignments are BSable...
She is one of the worst profs. of all time. Condescending, rude and she somehow avoids teaching by making this grad.-level class do kindergarten-style activities. Oh, and she says "Is this making sense to you guys" verbatim an average of 30 times per hour. I keep track every class. It's the only way I stay sane.
This professor is an embarrassment to Boston University. She is rude, condescending and simply does not know how to teach. Observe the sheer number of posts on this site, and read them all. Notice a pattern? It's almost as repetitious as her "Is this making sense to you guys?" (which she really does say 238749237654 times per class).
I think she's ok, not that bad. Her activities are quite interesting and helpful for understanding our material. Even though I didn't get good grade for the course, I like it.
Prof. Vigil is interesting, funny, and most importantly a professor that can keep my attention for three hours after a day of work. She was GREAT! Yes, she actually expects you to work, participate, come to class, and act like you're at a college level, which seems to have surprised some of the other reviewers. Act like an adult, you'll be fine.
worst professor at BU. avoid this class at all costs... read previous posts - for those who enjoyed her/this class I am truly shocked. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!
And I quote her, "Most of us stopped using encyclopedia's in the 5th grade." This is merely one example of how condescending and pompus she is. She makes you feel stupid for asking questions. What's worst is she tells you to come in and ask questions but then she refuses to help you and just makes fun of you for asking. STAY AWAY FROM VIGIL!
Vigil is okay. The topic is ridiculously useless. You learn a bunch of names and theories for things you already know. The tests are hard. But, to be fair, they are pretty straightforward. The kids who complain about them are just dumb COM kids. If you study hard its not that bad. However, Vigil is incredibly difficult to please on the paper.
She made a lot of students miserable.
Doesn't actually do anything in COM101 besides introduce speakers and ask them questions. Her voice is like poison. You can only have two absences per semester before your grade is lowered. You have to swipe in to class, so she is clearly very strict about it. Overall, you learn nothing in this class and Vigil only makes this bas experience worse.
yeah, she doesn't teach. she just introduces the class. this woman is awful, i had correspondences with her and she was unnecessarily rude. she speaks to students in an extremely condescending tone. don't know how she was ever hired
Put this woman up for an award: for "Worst Teach of All Time". The only thing more criminal than her being a professor, is her being a Dean. BU needs to fire both Vigil and whoever decided she was adequate for the job of Dean. Condescending. Refuses to help you. She'll make you feel like you're stupid for asking questions.
My communication teacher cannot communicat well, that's irony. She says is that make any sense about 50 times a class.
While I sit in this class and literally hear her talk while I write this I cannot explain my discomfort. Her voice hurts my ears, and her comments which are an attempt to make her seem intelligent fail, miserably. She is possibly the worst professor I have ever come across...is this making sense? No Professor, Vigil, not even in the slightest...
Shes an absolute idiot. She asked what kind of person you woud want to be stuck on an island with. I guarantee if i were lost on an island and she was one of the people with me she would be the first to go. Whoever hired this lady should be fired NOW!!! her voice is honestly nails on a chalk board
She's not a such horrible teacher as much as her personality could use improvement. She's quite condescending and assumes we're all just lazy kids who have no actual goals. 3/4 of the work we're given is busy work that doesn't even mean anything. On the bright side I like her clever use of YouTube during lectures and the TAs are pretty cool.
is this making sense? is this making sense? NO. It is not. For being a Professor of Communication, she is ironically one of the least effective communicators I have come across in my life. She is actually a huge factor in me changing my major. Awful, just awful. Not to mention, ANNOYINNNGGG!
Ok seriously she isn't that bad. You have to take the class anyway so just deal with it. Most of the time you have guest speakers anyway. She does say "is this making sense" an obscene amount of times, but whatever. I personally think she's really funny. Just deal with her, bring your laptop to class and play solitaire.
Listen to me. People are just commenting out of pure vendetta because COM 101 is so excruciating. She does an excellent job for what she's assigned for: Lecturing 400 students. She chooses great, creative examples in class. Although course material sucks, she makes a lot of it much more bearable. Frankly, the Ryan Reynolds visuals were great too.
Deserves more credit than she gets. Vigil is one of the warmest professors in COM, faced with the challenge of teaching COM 101 to a lecture of over 400 students. Makes the class easy and accessible for COM freshmen and provides a wealth of help and examples. If you hate COM 101, take it out on the class, not Vigil. Grades mostly dependent on TA.
Class is easy but boring. She gets kind of annoying, but outside of class she's nice. TA's are annoying in lecture (and outside of lecture too) but some of them are good, its really all hit and miss.
Attendance was not mandatory. I rarely went, and still got an A-. The day before tests, I studied for like 3 hours, but other than that this class took no time away from my life.
she clearly knows what she's talking about and i did learn a few things in her class but she's really not a nice person. and if you go to her during office hours she's not helpful either. it's true that she has many students in her 101 class but even on a one on one basis she's just as indifferent to you
Not a bad professor, knows the topic well and can be kind of helpful but you definitely have to rely on TA or other students. She doesn't really have time or ability to get to know you one on one, but doesn't necessarily try either. Class itself is really pointless, though, too.
why is she teaching the intro class???? they will lose COM majors by having her teach this course. she is mean, condescending, and doesn't know how to teach! i actually think she hates students in general.
she definitely makes sure she is clear and answers questions in class but any serious questions you may have outside you will need to go to you TA she DOES NOT want to answer those questions! but she definitely knows what she's talking about.
she is kind of harsh.
the material in the book is usually interesting. the lectures are boring, not mandatory, but if you miss them you'll do badly on the exams. the exams are hard so study hard. vigil is difficult to please and the TAs are terrible at grading. and having to get at least a B- to continue into COM is ridiculous, especially because of BUs grade deflation.
Vigil is very patronizing and her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Her favorite phrase is "Is this making sense to you guys?" and she says it about 20 times per class. People keep count. I am a COM major and love the subject but she makes me dread this class. It's mandatory so all you can do is suck it up. TAs make it bearable.
She does well for such a huge class but she is unhelpful in office hours and your grade is dependent on the TA. I had a horrible TA who marked really hard, sadly you have to take this class, but just work hard, take notes and get to know your TA
Pretends to be hip and cool, but her jokes fall flat. Her tests have questions that are random little trivia things you would never think to study. Instructions for essays are unclear and convuluted. Just bad teacher, totally ruined communication for me, made me want to switch out of COM
She is an ivory tower professor. Tammy has almost no experience in the field of communication. She is a bit condescending and tries to reinforce her credibility by repeating the fact that she has a PHD. The TA's are useless and some can be tough graders. Have fun finding the typos in the book. Don't let this class influence changing your major.
Vigil is simply not a good teacher. She seems to know what she's talking about, but she comes of as condescending, patronizing and sometimes mean in the process. The class itself needs an overhaul (which is sad considering it was just reworked), but that doesn't change the fact that she is the wrong person to introduce kids to com. Very frustrating
A lot of rambling.
The textbook was poorly written and full of grammatical errors and diction that Tammy clearly labels as inappropriate communicative writing in her "writing guidelines." A swamp of unhelpful examples, the textbook does not emphasize the important facts and definitions of the key terms clearly. A new textbook is necessary.
Simply the worst professor I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. Simply the worst. Would go so far as to say do not take COM101 for the sake of not having to deal with Professor Vigil. Condescending, entirely self-important, zero interest in helping students--Just plain mean in more ways than one. Don't even get me started on the textbook
Vigil is ok. Her lectures are not very stimulating though she is extremely peppy all the time. The TAs are helpful (I love mine!) and the work's not too bad but it's enough to be annoying. Don't worry, you'll get through CO101...it just won't be a thrill ride by any means.
She's a very enthusiastic professor, but not my favorite. She's often repetitive in order for you to understand the material. If you're going into com you don't really have an option, so just try to be engaged. She encourages participations. Oh, and the textbook is awfully written - so take good notes.
Lectures are useless. Don't bother going. This year they were at 8AM so I only went to 1 (that was syllabus day). I still got an A- though. The TA's are awesome. I had Jordan Petersen. Best guy and SO hot. The text book is tedious but I'd recommend outlining it. Follow the study guides and do the HW, which is not hard. Also, essays are worth alot
a lot of the other comments are overly dramatic. you shouldn't be expecting automatic A's 1st semester at BU. CO101 is fine, can be boring, but going to lecture is helpful. the TA's are great, but grading is tough. Tammy can be pretty abrasive and enjoys calling people out for their mistakes. avoid her & just ask the TA's instead! you'll survive =]
The class itself isn't too bad, but the lecture are not necessary at all. The TAs are absolutely wonderful and very helpful. Vigil, on the other hand, doesn't really make the class interesting (she sure tries though) and she is quite self-absorbed. At least once a lecture, you'll hear about her fantastic PhD. Also, the textbook is complete rubbish.
She is condescending, unhelpful, and almost rude. Her lecture is absolutely pointless, but she puts arbitrary things from it into the exams. You have to teach yourself 100% to the textbook for COM 101 (she edited it, but it's so flawed).
She's a nice person outside of class...but in lecture, she's not. This is a Bring Your Own Tylenol type of class. Her voice is high-pitched and grating. She is condescending towards her students and will ask "Is this making sense?" about once a minute.
Simply an awful professor. Not approachable by any means. Make sure you ask around about TAs-the one you get determines the grade you will receive.
I don't even know where to begin with Prof. Vigil, or excuse me, DR. VIGIL(yeah you'll definitely learn about her phD very soon if you take this class).Vigil is just the wrong person to be lecturing to students. Kind of ironic how a COM professor teaches about proper communication, yet fails to do so herself and is condescending toward her students
Her voice is annoying & the material isn't interesting. Lectures are hard to go to since they're 9:30am. The txtbook she edited is not well written and $100-she will MAKE u buy it. the tests aren't hard, but def not easy, people get Cs. she's not HORRIBLE though. She's just average. I heard she's nicer when you meet w/ her 1 on 1
She had a very clear passion for her field and that made it significantly easier to grasp the material. She also found several ways to make the info relatable to the typical college freshman (Ryan Gosling was often a topic of discussion). I overall enjoyed her class very much. My only criticism is that the class was long.
Professor Vigil is a hard grader on her students due to the fact that she believes that no one takes the class seriously. Besides that, a small portion of what she teaches is actually helpful, the rest is all just common sense.
Awful.
This course isn't really difficult. It's sometimes annoying, and the lectures are not the most interesting. Just do the homework and participation assignments and it's fine. The tests are not difficult if you study. Papers depend on who your TA is.
A lot of people don't like this class/teacher because it used to be an 8am and Tammy's voice is really loud and gives you headaches. BUT. Tammy is devoted and so are her TA's. She is brilliant and if you give this class a chance, you'll like it. Although, it is unnecessarily hard, yet not impossible.
A lot of students don't like Tammy, but I really did not mind her. The class is straightforward and easy if you go to lecture. She honestly really knows what she's talking about.
The only bad thing about Tammy is her voice...which she makes shrill and grating on purpose to keep students awake. The class isn't hard if you actually do the work, but can be time consuming.
A lot of people hate Tammy but she isn't really that bad. Class does get boring but I easily passed only going to half the lectures and copying my friend's notes from the other half. Test and papers weren't very difficult and TA's are very willing to help.
One of the worst this school.
She's really not that bad. Like most others, the class is difficult if you don't put any effort in. At times the lectures can be boring, but she usually tries to make them more interesting. Overall, I think she's a pretty good professor and she knows what she's talking about.
Class is general. She's rather annoying and thinks that because she has a PhD, her subject is more important than the others. Terrible class, don't recommend. But necessary for COM so... good luck.
She is no help at all. She makes exam "guides" that lists some things she may or may not have talked about that may or may not be on the test. It's useless. She always has an attitude and is impossible to talk to. And if it says anything about her communication skills, she apparently can't even be bothered to spell her students' names right.
This class isn't hard. At all. If you do your work, you'll do fine. It's not a lot of work either. You have chapter questions due each week. Easily manageable. Her voice may be shrill at times, but she's a good teacher who is passionate about what she teaches.
She is really good at the lectures. The class is easy as long as you do the readings. You can probably do ok on the papers and really good on the test ( by reading and going to lectures) and still manage a B+ or A
I hate how this class is graded. I think I spent around 20+ hours on each essay (AND got both COM and ERC tutors to edit them), and I never got higher than a B on the papers. Grade inflation is A REAL THING in this class (esp for essays!).
Tammy is a decent professor, but she is mostly irrelevant because lecture only covers a small fraction of the material. Tests are very easy but they can be somewhat random. The papers aren't so bad (I found them interesting), but your grade relies heavily on your TA. Mine knew what he was doing. I got an A in this class without much trouble.
Professor Vigil has an annoying voice, lectures are dull, and she's constantly bragging about her PhD. However, your grade in this class really depends on your TA - Tammy will never look at your work and most likely never know who you are. Material is easy, I skipped lecture frequently and got an A-. Attendance is taken in discussion.
Tough class but you can learn a lot.
Ok, I had my anticipations on how bad Vigil would be, and she was "better" than I expected. I ended up missing half the lecture, but tried getting notes from people. Tests are based off of lecture notes, what comes out of Vigil's mouth, and readings. Your TF's determine your grade, not Vigil.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Made me decide not to major in communication - if you have any interest in this career, stay away from her. By far the weakest link in all of Boston University's faculty, really disappointing. I regret spending one cent on her class.
Worst professor ever. She should learn how to communicate with students.
She's not very understanding to any of her students and it is very clear that she shows no interest in her student's futures and aspirations. She should not have that much power over students, especially since her class dictates whether you can be in the College of Communications or not. Also her class is a bore and she tries to be funny but isnt
worst ever! don't take!
I actually don't mind Tammy as much as most people do and enjoyed the class for the most part. But she can be a a little annoying and kind of treats her students like kids. The class is required and I feel like her attitude strongly reflects that. The TA's make or break your experience.
A lot of the information we learned felt useless or repetitive, as in I knew a lot of the material from common sense. Rarely attended lectures and ended up with a B+. This class sucks, but don't let it discourage you from staying in COM!
Professor Vigil's textbook is poorly written, riddled with typos, difficult to understand and ridiculously wordy. You could summarize her horrible lectures and textbook into a 10 minute PowerPoint taught by a capable professor in COM201. In fact, that is exactly how I learned the material she was supposed to teach me. Don't bother going to class
Most boring professor with the most irritating voice. If COM101 wasn't required NOBODY would take her class.
Knowledgable in the subject and enthusiastic about teaching it. It felt like she took simple terms and made them complicated for no reason and her tests featured finicky questions that made the difference in your grade. TA's do most of the grading so having a good one makes a difference. Not impossible but not easy.
So I decided to comment here because I thought her average on this site was FAR too high. She is condescending and spends a good amount of time lecturing you, not about the subject matter, but about what students are doing wrong. That high school mentality where if one person misbehaved, that suddenly meant the whole class needed to be punished.
She is wildly annoying but her class is very self explanatory. COM 101 isn't looking for you to be smart, it is looking for you to follow directions.
Lectures not particularly baddifficult but your grade is entirely dependent on the TA you get. I had a horrible TA and would get 60s on papers I wrote with my friends and they would get 90s because we had different TAs. Kind of annoying there isn't some sort of general rubric to make it all fairly graded.
SUPREMELY CONDESCENDING.
I didn't read a page of the textbook but still got an A. The class really depends on your TA, not Tammy. That being said, she was incredibly condescending and rude, and often blamed a full class (of 500 people!) for something not everyone did. The good side was tons of EC. It's not a difficult class, but it's a frustrating class.
She's really not that bad. Also the reading is super easy. I'm honestly shocked at how many people dislike her. She's good at her job.
Tammy Vigil was not nearly as bad as some make her out to be. Yes, class does drag at times, and yes, she does have her condescending moments, but overall I found her to be at least moderately interesting to listen to. If you do the readings and attend lecture a majority of the time, it is not hard to do well. The tests require some studying.
Tammy was a good lecturer, but she really had little to do with the grading of any of our assignments. If you have a good TA, you should be OK for this class. It's not hard to get a good grade, esp. if you do the EC. Kind of a pain in the ass class but really not terrible.
Her voice gets annoying after awhile. Most of the material is common sense. There are only three papers and two tests, but she's not the one who grades them. Just hope you get a good TA. If not, then good luck. I'd recommend against her, but her course is required. Too bad.
Do yourself a favor and do everything to NOT take this class. I have never had such a rude, unhelpful, and condescending teacher in my life. In the case of TAs-- let's hope you get a good one because the TA apples do not fall far from the Tammy Tree. Mine was just as rude as the queen bee herself. Good. Luck.
This class takes up a lot of time with weekly assignments, papers or tests. Papers are graded really hard... your grade will depend on how nice your TA is. SOOO much extra credit... If you do the work, study vocab words and do extra credit, you'll make it.
You have to take COM101. Vigil teaches it. There is no way around it. She isn't as bad as everyone says she is. Besides that, you don't really interact with her much- everything goes through your TA. If you actually try in the class, you will do fine.
Boring. Lectures don't add anything to the course, just read the book and you'll be fine. She asks questions on the tests on things she said in lecture, so be prepared for that. But even if you don't get those questions you can score a B+, which is totally worth not sitting through her boring lectures. However, she gives a lot of extra credit.
She is a nightmare. This class made me want to drop out of school. Thinking of her voice still sends chills up my spine. Extremely condescending in her lectures. It's horrible that this class is required and is the introduction class to COM. The school gets a lot better after you finish this class.
She is so annoying. Her textbook is also terrible. I did really well in the class and never went to lecture. But I did get the lecture notes from friends and read the textbook.
the papers are manageable but your grades will probably range from a C- to an A+, at least partially because of your TA and their interpretation of the vague/uninspiring prompts. her lectures are difficult to takes notes on because the material seems like common sense until you actually try to study for the tests and realize you learned nothing.
CO101 is the stupidest class I've ever taken. The paper assignments were less complex than things I wrote freshman year of high school.
I don't know why everyone bashes on Tammy. Her lectures are very clear with many real-world examples. She manages to make lecture engaging and interact with the students, even in a 300+ person lecture. The grading for essays is a bit unclear, but there's so much HW and extra credit points that you should be fine in the end.
I didn't have as horrible of an experience with Professor Vigil as I thought I would. Lectures were optional, but they were mainly just about content with the book, with a couple of guest lectures. Pray for a good TA cause he/she will be grading your papers and tests.
Dr. Vigil-helpful,approachable,understanding,accommodating, promptly returns emails, lectures are interesting. Based on previous reviews of this professor, I went into this course thinking it is extremeley tough. But, it really isn't. If you do the discussion questions and the extra credit you'll be fine. Highly recommended
One of the toughest classes that I have ever taken. However, if you read all the assigned readings including the lecture notes, you will pass. It's your TA who decides your grade, not Dr. Vigil. So if you want to get good grades on your paper, visit TA office hour. Discussion is mandatory, but not lectures. But I recommend going to all lectures.
COM101 students are freshmen that are new to college and expected this course to be easy. COM101 isn't hard - you can earn an A as long as you attend lectures, do reading homework and study for the midterm and final. Vigil is lively, incredibly intelligent and always willing to help students.
Dr. Vigil, though knowledgeable in the field of communication, is not a very good lecturer by any means.
Professor Vigil is an enthusiastic teacher who knows what she's talking about when teaching Communications. It is a very tough class that requires 3 essays, two tests, and reading homework every week. Definitely take notes in every lecture and READ all chapters to do well on tests. Also, start papers early, because they require a lot of research.
Tammy gets a bad rap, but I was truly entertained by her lectures. She can be annoying, but she's animated, intelligent, and loves her profession. Her TA's are pretty much her minions, but I LOVED my TA, and that class wasn't hard at all. show up to most lectures, do your homework, and you're good to go. prepare for some jaw-dropping lectures
Professor Vigil's lectures are drawn out and unecessary. She does not post the lectures online or follow the book which can be very confusing. Many guest lectures so students are left unaware what they should study/take notes on. Three vague, tedious, and difficult papers.
She is the worst professor I ever had in BU. The reason Vigil exists in this world is because school wants to "balance" grades and lower the average gpa of you folks. After you just got in COM and survived her CM101 and later on you just found out this evil shiiiitty hard grader still teach other courses. She jst pretend to know what she is teachin
She is an extremely tough grader even when you clearly tried. She isn't very clear when it comes to what she's looking for in an assignment. Overall, just not a pleasurable experience.
One of the best teachers I've had. I have taken two classes with her and my writing has significantly improved. Highly recommend. One of my favorite teachers at BU!
Professor Vigil is probably the most cold-hearted human I have ever met. She is the type of person who makes me question why some people go into education at all. She clearly does NOT want her students to do well and gets pleasure out of ruining GPAs. Unless you want to spend your semester having existential crises, steer away from this lady.
SUCH a good class. Tammy gets a bad rep because she is a tough grader, but she is extremely accessible outside of class and is willing to help you on your papers. I've had 2 classes with her and my writing has immensely improved. She actually cares if students understand the material and encourages a lot of class discussion, which is super helpful.
Condescending professor with very boring lectures. Doesn't help that the class is SO boring. I basically never went to lectures as the lecture content is basically all from the textbook. Also pointless in-class activities.
The expensive textbook wasn't necessary. She is a bad lecturer, and does not always treat students with respect.
The worst class I have taken yet. I do not understand the point of this class at all. Even worse, prof makes it a nightmare. She is so condescending and unpleasant to listen to. In a 100+ lecture class, she expects people to participate. When no one does, she makes comments that are sometimes offensive to us. She also assigns random presentations.
I don't understand what is the point of taking this class and why BU make this class mandatory for communication major. She assgins very boring group project and presentation, and does not give you good grade.
A nightmare. For somebody who boasts about her doctorate education, she conducts her courses like a kindergarten classroom. The course material is abhorrent for a university education, and is a repeat of her equally terrible intro class. Lectures are useless and your time is better spent playing with a rubber band. A true stain on our college.
Professor Vigil is one of my least favorite professors I've had at BU. She is extremely harsh, unreasonable and not approachable whatsoever. She also is very condescending and talks way too much about herself. When you ask her a question regarding an assignment or something you simply didn't understand she smirks at you as if you were stupid.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. She makes learning incredibly UNPLEASANT. Most professors who teach in com are very sweet/good people. She is not. She purposely will do things to make you struggle not in a good helpful way.
Professor Vigil is hands down the worst professor I've had so far in my BU experience. Not only is she extremely condescending, she doesn't teach material, boasts about how she doesn't answer her emails, and gives extremely vague project requirements. The COM department should really re-evaluate her teaching, especially in a foundation course.
I really liked Dr. Vigil. She is not as awful as people say. She offers great feedback, but she does expect a lot out of her students. Go to her office hours! She is always willing to help.
If this was her first year teaching I wouldn't be surprised, but she has taught for years and years. The projects were vague with no clear rubric, which makes them extremely subjective to grade. The lectures hold almost no information. She will start lecturing and then go off topic and by the end you don't learn anything. Students deserve better.
If her having the term PHD in her email username isn't enough of a sign for you that she's the worst, let me list out a few reasons: condescending, rude, aggressive, unclear assignments, horribly unfair grading, satan's daughter. I would rather get smashed between the BU shuttle and the T than ever be in her presence again.
Hands down the worst professor I've had at BU. Extremely unclear guidelines for assignments, dry lectures, and overall unapproachability. If this class weren't mandatory, I would suggest never taking it.
Very passive aggressive tone through emails and in lecture. Sardonic attitude, thinks she's funny sometimes when she's not. Tough grader without clear reason. Expects a lot more participation in lecture than she gets, but she is the least inspirational professor so nobody wants to participate.
No thank you, NEXT!
Yes, Vigil sucks, but she makes the lectures interesting if you actually pay attention. She is an incredibly tough grader without any explanation however, rude, passive aggressive and sarcastic. What you might think is an easy project or essay actually becomes the end to your GPA. Don't approach her or she will make you cry, you have been warned
Prof. Vigil is a tough grader, and if you get a bad group for your two group projects you'e going to get a C on both. The essays are easy enough (graded by TAs) and the exams are online so you can use the book. She isn't as mean as everyone says she is, but the lectures feel pointless and drawn out at times.
Vigil is the vegan that needs to let everyone know she's a vegan. For someone who boasts about their PhD degree and how she got accepted into Harvard, you'd think she'd be more organized with her class. She lacks compassion for her students and runs it like a military academy. Her feedback is brash and not helpful. Among the worst. Thank u, next.
Despite her being a communications professor she is actually a very poor communicator and sets unrealistic expectations. No wonder she boasts so much about her acceptance to a certain Ivy League university, because that pretty much sums up how she grades assignments. DO NOT take if possible.
Tammy Vigil is the worst professor you could ever imagine. If there is ANY way you can take this class over the Summer with a different professor, I would strongly recommend you do so. She is not helpful, will yell at you, grades harshly, gives impossible online exams, and will not make time to meet with you. Also, the textbooks are confusing/wordy
Vigil is the worst professor I have ever had. The workload for the class is extremely heavy and grading criteria is unclear. She does not give rubrics because we "would not get one in the real world". Lectures are not mandatory and not worth it, she talks about herself for 85% of the class. The most frustrating class I've ever taken.
Her expectations for paper is really high but the grading criteria is very unclear. She assigns too many people in a group, makes it even harder to cooperate. She does not try to understand what people actually feel about her project, and even said she doesnt care about her grade on rate my professor. Why does BU make CM180 unavoidable?
The only word that comes to mind when I think of Professor Vigils CM180 class is terrible. She created a hostile and unproductive learning environment. Her lectures were incredibly difficult to follow and grading was entirely random and not based on actual knowledge or writing ability. If anyone asked a question she made fun of them. Truly awful!
The worst professor I've ever met. She ruined my semester.
Absolutely TERRIBLE Professor. She speaks in the most condescending tone to her students and grade this like a 400 level class. Lecture with her is completely invaluable, since she makes her exams completely based on the textbook. I sincerely hope that when she walks through the gates of Hell, she just burns. She was the worst prof I've ever had.
I'm one of those students that always goes to office hours and tries to ask for help whenever I can to get a better grade. Even when I went and asked for help, Dr. Vigil was not useful at all. She was condescending and rude whenever I asked questions and the exams were ridiculously hard for all the info being from the textbook. She's the worst.
I took this class fall 2018 and already left a rating, yet i feel as a senior i owe it to the lower class-men to warn you: DO NOT TAKE HER FOR ANYTHING. If you need her specific class for credit, see if you can find equivalent credit from a state/community school from where you're from. I'm so serious, she's a terrible teacher.
The best prof. ever if you want to ruin your entire semester! She lets you teach yourself. As the semester keeps going, she teaches less and less knowledge. Did she ever prepare for class? The way she grades is more than terrible and random. She approved your topic last week and gave you a 65 for improper topic choice. 1.0 is too much for her.
She ruins my summer session. Would give you bad grades with one little discussion missing. She just doesn't want her student to pass exams. She acts kind in classes but is such a tough geader. Waste of energy and money.
The ivory tower spares Tammy a life of serial unemployment. Whatever redeeming qualities she may have are quashed by her narcissism, deceit, and eagerness to cultivate enmity. Bad teachers have an interesting way of moving into administration. So it is with Tammy. There are few checks on her toxic behavior and its far-reaching consequences at COM.
Prof. Vigil writes that "diapering babies" is an activity beneath the dignity of educated, successful people. Tragic that she's incapable of loving and nurturing another human being so unconditionally. Someone diapered her when she was young and likely will again in old age. In a just world, future caretakers will leave her to sit in it.
I took it in the summer and the group project was the worst part. Her lectures were great and she's a great person, but if you have group project issues, settle them immediately and go to her if it doesn't work. I waited till the end, and scrapped by with an A because we had to exclude a group member who never came to class past the 1st session.
Vigil fosters an intellectually cramped, creatively stunted, fear-dominated learning environment. Lectures are a poorly executed assemblage of social commentary from a true believer on the distant political left. If you care about your grade, you're conditioned to make broad statements about complex issues instead of speaking honestly and freely.
If you have the displeasure of being in one of Vigils classes for longer than one hour at a time I want you to know from the bottom of my heart, im sorry. This Harvard prof. reject does not see her students as people. Run for the hills. Please. Save yourself.
Truly such a mean, vindictive woman. I got a fine grade in this class, but I have never experienced a professor as derogatory as Vigil. It seems as if she gets pleasure from knocking 20 year olds down a peg and proving she is intellectually superior. Avoid her if you want a professor that actually treats you like a human.
literally every single negative rating on here is correct. i thought they must be exaggerating, but no. she left actual insults on my paper feedback. i don't know what causes her to act this way, but i hope she gets the help she needs. overall a vile person.
This class was a nightmare. The professor was extremely condescending and unhelpful, even in office hours. The exams were ridiculously difficult, focused solely on the textbook. I wish I had used unstuck study to help with the brutal study prep.
