She is not a hard teacher at all, but she is very tedious and her classes are extremely boring. There is not a premium on taking notes because it is very important to read the book and do the practice problems in the workbook. The tests are only difficult if you haven't read the textbook because you will not understsand the wording. has an accent.
VERY boring class, esp T/Th classes. you must go to class because she gives pop quizzes and homework that isnt available on the internet. doesn't use powerpoint, all her notes are from the chalkboard. has an accent but is helpful.
If you enjoy intellectual thought do not take this class. If you are good at memorization of facts then this is for you. She is one the least helpful teachers I've ever had, her notes are very poorly organized and she has trouble giving any valuable real-world answers.
Great professor. Does not take attendance (classes are too big) so attendance is not mandatory. Lectures can be boring sometimes, but if you keep focus you will learn a lot. The tests are easy and she assigns homeworks that help your grade. She also doesn't give 'minus' grades. i.e. if you got a B- you get a B GPA. If you get an A- you get an A GPA
There are 4 tests worth 25% each. You get to drop a test and homework counts as a test grade. She does not take attendance and her class is extremely boring. I would recommend not taking her simply because it is too hard to pay attention to her lectures.

I liked her.
Awful teacher. Terribly hard, picks favorites. cannot teach at all!
She is a really nice professor and is readily available to help you when you need it. It's cool that she drops a test so if you do well enough you don't have to take the final. She does ramble a bit but it's easy to get past. Homework is easy and you really don't have to use the text book at all because tests only cover what you went over in class
Mrs Jordan is very good! I took her for Price Theory. The subject is intricate. She does her best to explain it and does a fantastic job! Has a very nice personality and forms a rapport with the students. However, don't expect a "free lunch." Attend class and take notes. Go to office hours - helps every one. Keep up with material 'cause it's a lot.
Don't be fooled by these comments. Professor Jordan is an extremely good teacher. Her lectures are clear, concise, and to the point. Hands down the best Econ teacher you will find at SMU if you're actually interested in learning the material.
bad experience , her tests are very long and hard. she picks favorites.
homework frequently, quiz for several times, tests are not hard. go to class on time and turn in homework because she will keep everything in mind.if you follow her well, you'll have a easy final time with no exam and an A
Professor Jordan is very difficult! The lectures are interesting & she does a good job of keeping your interest -- but her multiple choice tests are impossible!! I usually get A's, and I'm struggling for a B-. Do not take her if you want a high GPA. Worse decision I made.
Professor Jordan's class is not exactly easy, but it's fair. She keeps students interested and builds a good rapport with students. Homework is frequent but not difficult, and she doesn't take attendance, but she will give random quizzes. Tests are multiple choice and worded strangely, so make sure you read the book.
I didn't really like her lectures in class that much, but it wasn't hard. If you basically took notes, then you had everything you need for the test. She drops one test grade, including the final, so there is the potential that you don't have to take the final. As long as you at least put forth a LITTLE effort, you should get a good grade!
I thought she was a great professor, nearly every assignment is multiple choice, and her lectures are clear and well formatted. She has a fun accent too, not hard to understand, just fun to listen to. Showing up to class is graded as part of participation, but if you give her ample warning via email (not in person, shes forgetful) you can skip.
If you go to all the lectures you'll do fine on the homework and tests. Yes, there is a lot of homework, but each assignment can usually be completed in under five minutes.
She is AWFUL. stay away, seriously. she does a good enough job keeping you interested during class but her tests are insanely dificult. don't take this class!
She presents the material in a clear manner and repeats key ideas so that you understand. She doesn't take attendance because the class is too big, but you have to go because she doesn't put the homework online. Her tests are multiple choice but they're phrased weirdly, probably from a test bank. Overall, she's one of the better macro teachers.
Not a great professor I have to say. I studied for hours upon hours for her tests and never got above a B-...try a different professor if you want to take macro
I loved this class! I hated in econ in high school but Jordan made it easy to understand. The classes can be long sometimes. She explains things really well and really got me intrested. If you take notes you do not need the book. GO TO CLASS. She knows everyone by the end of day one and will call you out. Homework adds up to a test grade major help
She is a tough professor because students have to attend each class in order to earn an A. Tests are tough, but she makes herself available and she is a great teacher for anyone that is an aspiring economics major.
She is a very nice professor, and can be rather funny. However, her TTh classes can seem very long. No matter how well I made sure I understood the concepts, I did C work on the tests because they are phrased oddly and unlike the assignments for class. Make sure you do the homework, it's easy and just gives you points to boost your grade!
Tania is a great professor, and is very clear. Those out there complaining about the "difficulty" of her tests probably don't study, or even go to lecture (not required) HW is 25%, and she drops your worst test. You can make an A in this class easily assuming you go to every lecture, take notes, and spend some time studying before the test.
Professor Jordan is by no means a bad teacher. She's clear with the concepts and quite helpful if you ask her questions. However, her tests are incredibly difficult. I would feel confident about the material because I understood her lectures and my notes, but I would get back a C- on my test. Studying harder did nothing for me.
Really helpful and good teacher, but the class is tough. I grasp economic concepts very well and aced the homeworks, but the tests are kinda brutal. I ended up with a B in the class, but I put in a lot of work during the second half of the semester to make it happen.
Professor Jordan is the worst economics teach at SMU. do not take her. she is just awful and her tests are extremely hard and nobody has the answers from prior tests.
If you go to class, and do the homework (which is not tough) you can get an A. She gives some extra credit and lets you drop a test. Great teacher for macro.
All I'm going to say is that going to class is 80% of this course. ALl tests are worth the same(even the final) and she drops one (even the final)... Attendance is not mandatory but the only people i see dropping this course are the kids who dont show up to lectures...
Jordan is super tough!! I went to class everyday and still barely came out with a B. Unless economics comes naturally to you, expect to spend hours with a nose in your book before the test! Good luck to all those stuck with her like I was.
Literally sucks. Worst teacher I've ever experienced. Extremely difficult tests. My buddy had pneumonia and had to miss the test because was in hospital, and she wouldn't let him take it at a later time and gave him a 0. I wish I curse on this site but because I can't, just know I would call her many bad names.
The material would seem clear during class and I would think I understood, and then I would fail the tests. I failed almost every single test in this class.I tried to get help, and Jordan is very helpful, but were always so many people there that it took forever to even get to talk to her. She is nice but her class was horribly difficult for me.
Avoid Tania at all costs. The detail she goes into in class comes nowhere near the meticulous information required to pass her tests. She thoroughly enjoys tricking students on tests and does not prepare them properly. Her inability to teach is reflected in the fact that in my class of 160 students not one scored higher than 75% on the core exam.
Tania is a great teacher, despite what some reviewers said. I went to every class, studied 2 days before the test for 8 hours combined, did all 12 hmws (took 10mins and were simple), and I got a 97, 103, 81 (lol, didn't study), and I didn't have to take the final because I had an A. Take her if you're willing to attend class and try, if not, don't
I loved Econ in high school but Tania ruined Econ for me. She didn't teach it well, she yells at students, and her only grades are tests. Do everything to avoid taking her
This is a class where you have to figure out how to study yourself. Do not consider taking the 1hr 20 min lecture if you are going to be even slightly tired. Her lectures are critical to the test, she never covers anything that she missed in class on the test. Use the study guide. If you pay attention and study 2 hours a week, that's good.
Hate this class. she is terrible at explaining things in class. She loves to confuse you on tests and never prepares you for the tests. It's very difficult to study for her tests. I hated this class. Don't take her.
Worst class i have taken. She doesn't spend time on the hard stuff that will destroy you on the test. People who say they pass this class are the nerds who don't go out or rush. Save yourself. Do not take this course. Do not make the mistake i made.
Jordan is the worst economics professor you can take. She's nice and if you go to her office hours she will explain stuff to you again. But she is terrible at explaining concepts in class. She covers the easiest topics for the longest time and the hard ones she just passes over. Her tests are brutal and it's hard to concentrate during an exam
Worst teacher ever. Tests are extremely hard and class doesn't prepare you for them. Very rude sometimes
Took her for both micro and macro but she's a lot harder for macro. Got an A in both but had to read the book and go to all the lectures. DO NOT go off her lectures because you WILL FAIL if you don't study on your own. Must be willing to spend time studying and learning yourself or you will not do well in this class.
While she can be very nice and helpful during office hours, Tania's lectures tend to be more focused on trying to weed out those who are not interested by making them hard to understand. Her tests are *VERY* challenging, but she does drop the lowest one. There are no grade "buffers" like homework or quizzes to offset tests. She hates extra credit.
Absolutely horrible. Worst teacher I've ever had. Very difficult tests, do not take if you are weak/new in economics. Lectures drag on, not interesting at all.
Worst professor ever. Hands down. She can't teach at all. AVOID. Change your entire schedule if you have to.
Terrible teacher. Not helpful. tests are hard.
Her lectures jump around a lot and her tests are based on lectures and the book. She calls people out if they are absent, late, sleeping, or on phone. Tests are designed to trick you. Must study an extensive amount to get a good grade on tests.
Horrible professor. Just don't take her
DO NOT TAKE. You can't miss a class, even if you are sick, or she takes points off your final grade. Her tests are absolutely impossible, no matter how much you study. If you have never taken economics before, don't even consider taking her. She tells you on the first day if you haven't had eco you'll struggle. That's an understatement
AVOID if you're not familiar with economics. No homework to help learn concepts or help grade, no practice for tests, not helpful in office hours. TAs will tell you that she won't even tell them anything about her tests.
She is a very hard intro teacher, but you can make an A. Do all the homeworks and always read your book.
One of the worst professors ever. Couldn't be bothered to help her students would rather sit on her throne and dictate the tas to do everything. She lacks manners, intelligence and class. Do not take
change your whole schedule if you have to in order not to have her. tests are supposed to test you over the material you have studied while her tests are asked in a confusing manner just to trick you. she is also all over the place during class and goes lighting speed. DO NOT TAKE.
Tbh, I think she's a great professor, despite all the negative comments everywhere about her. Discipline is a must. Attend all lectures, submit hw, pay attention, study. Basically what you SHOULD be doing in college anyway. If you consider yourself to be smart, take her. She's always willing to help if she knows you're making effort.
incredibly difficult, avoid at all costs.
Great teacher. You learn a lot in this class and feel like you're doing well... until you take a test... Tests are so difficult and tricky that they aren't even a good representation of what you know. 40% of the class dropped after receiving their second test grades. Avoid her at all costs if you need to make a good grade.
TJ has a bad rep but is actually a great teacher. Even those with negative things to say can't deny that she is a genius in economics. She's personable, kind, and willing to help. Go to class, take notes, spend some time in office hours, don't use your phone in class, and turn in the (few&easy) homework pages, and you can easily get an A.
Professor Jordan is a very kind, easy to approach woman! She knows all (Yes, ALL) of her students names by heart despite the class sizes. However, I would not recommend her as she rants about material which is 100% unrelated to Eco and will deduct points from your grade for using the restroom and texting as she finds both of these disrespectful.
Everybody talks about how tough she is, but if you go to the office hours and put in the work the class really isn't that bad. If you can do simple math and understand graphs you will be fine! She usually has 4 tests (including the final) but only 3 count so if you work hard you won't have to take the final! The tests are hard though so STUDY!
Only four tests throughout the year, and you can drop one of them. Do the homework and pay attention to everyone of her lectures. Read the book if you don't understand her lecture that day. If you listen to her in class and pay attention, you will do well in the class. Tania isn't the nicest person, but her class is easier than everyone says.
Tania Jordan is a teacher that suits a particular student. A student that wants to learn the subject and not just have a teacher tell you what the material is. I was hospitalized one night and I missed a test but she did not like me make it up because one is dropped which is my only problem with here. There are easier micro teachers to take.
Tania is a stern professor in class, but quite helpful in person. The people that find her class hard are people that either don't show up, fall asleep through class, or just screw around all class. Pay attention, take good notes, maybe read the book for clarifications, and you should make an A.
Tania is definitely a teacher that will make you work for it. She would sometimes give pop quizzes during lectures if a lot of people were gone. Super picky about phones and leaving class to go to the bathroom or something (DON'T). She is a very fair grader and lets you drop one test!
Tania is a very tough teacher but I can say the way she teaches is better than any other Eco. teachers for intro econ at SMU. I learned more in two semesters with her then I thought I would of. Are there easier teachers. YES. But if you want to be a Finance, Accounting, or Econ major definitely take Prof. Jordan
Do not take ECO 1311 with Tania. I am a good student; I come to every class, do all of my homework, read in the textbook, and even bought a study guide for this class and worked the practice problems. I studied a week in advance for a test and received a C. Sure, I'm not failing, but because there was nothing more I could have done, I expected an A
Use the book to study for the test. Do not need otherwise.
Did not encourage my success. Athletes be careful, does not have a good understanding of what it takes to achieve athletic success.
Hard tests, but not impossible to make a decent grade. Make sure you get all the homework right, makes a big difference on final grade. If you study a lot and still don't do well on the tests, Econ/Business is not for you!!!!!
I took AP Economics in high school but never took the AP test. I struggled so much in this class even though I went to class every day and payed attention to every boring lecture. When it comes to tests, do not expect to do well unless you study quite a bit. Her tests are impossible.
You are only given 4 tests including the final and you get to drop one. If you do well on the first 3 tests you don't have to take the final. Also the homework is really easy and counts almost as much as a test at the end so DO IT. People always complain about Jordan but if you go to class she is not as bad as everyone says.
I did not enjoy her class at all. She was often not helpful to us and a lot of us couldn't understand what she was saying. She talks about not disturbing the class, but will stop in the middle of the lecture to yell at kids and postpone what we actually are trying to learn. She also doesn't give a lot of help preparing for tests.
Tests have very few questions that are completely off-topic and out of the blue.
I've never had a teacher or professor deliberately try to make her students do poorly and discontinue the Cox track. She gives pop quizzes when there is low attendance to lower HW/quiz averages. The lectures are long, uninterrupted and mostly tangents that may or may not be on the test, what she writes on the board is 25% of what you need to know.
Doesn't have your back and it seems like she wants you to fail. I'd take any other teacher at any other time before I took her again. Never had a professor less respected by students before, heard she was getting fired. Knows the material but should be teaching class of 10 kids in grad school not 100 freshman.
During the first day of class she'll take attendance and instantly remember everyone's names. If you don't show up, she'll know and will be less likely to help in office hours before a test. Just show up to class and PAY ATTENTION! The tests are over everything she says. Grading scale is very clear, and she won't change grades. Great professor!
She's very strict on her rules in the class, but if you play by them and do your work you'll be fine. Attendance isn't mandatory, but the test is over everything she says so GO to class and PAY ATTENTION! If you're in class but still confused she is super helpful in office hours! Don't argue over grading. Overall great professor. Learned a lot.
She took two points off one of my quizzes because the top part of my curve wasn't curved enough, but everything else was right. Just don't take her.
This teacher is a weed out teacher, if possible get another teacher. Not even that good at teaching and yet gives impossible tests
My test grade average is a 100 in her class. Unlike most people, I only spend 2-3 hours max studying before her test. To do good in her class, you must be willing to learn. If you don't understand a concept, talk to her after. You don't need to read the econ book at all in her class. All the materials on her test can be found in her lecture.
Lots of people don't like her, but I found her super helpful. I didn't open the textbook once and I've done really well. The daily homework isn't that bad, and if you go into office hours it's even easier. She does tend to spontaneously call on people sitting in the back more. The tests are very difficult though so study a lot.
Deliberately wants students to drop her class. Avoid at all costs. I'm a very studious kid who did not get above a 75 on one of her tests. Homeworks are graded by two different TA's, which grade completely sporadically. Teacher shows no interest in the well being of her students
You learn from the second you step into her class she is not a forgiving woman. Whether it be giving pop quizzes the day before a break when many students are absent(expectedly) or calling out students in front of the entire 100 person lecture. Highly recommend taking a different teacher if possible.
BY FAR the worst teacher I've ever had. She NEVER covers everything on each test, she's a horrible communicator, she'll humiliate kids in class, is a horrible and unclear grader, and is above else a mean person. As a student who was interested in majoring in economics, that idea or passion has been swept to the side since taking her class.
I have never had a teacher who did not want the students to do well. This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I studied very rigorously and attended class very regularly. I have all A's in my other classes and had D+ in this class. DO NOT TAKE. THERE ARE BETTER OPTIONS
The class is huge and technically not mandatory, but if she notices a lot of people are gone she will give pop quizzes. By the second week she had all 300 of her students names and faces memorized and frequently calls students out for not paying attention. 100% of her class is either taking a test or listening to a lecture.
avoid this class. the worst micro class by far. she thinks a low C class average on a test is optimal. homework is graded specifically, yet inconsistently. can turn in identical homework and get back 2 diff grades. I think this has to do with 3 different people grading it. After the second test at least a solid quarter of the class had to drop.
I am one of the only people who didn't find Tania's class to be ridiculous. I actually found it to be pretty easy and didn't worry about it too much. This class is meant to discourage people from entering Cox so do not expect her to be friendly or helpful. I could tolerate this class, but 90% of people I have talked to cannot so I would stay away.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Do yourself a favor and do not take her class. You will probably end up dropping it and having to retake it anyways.
Professor Jordan is so much better than everyone out here has made her out to be. She is amazing with her lectures, holds your attention and explains the material so well! Yes, she is a tough grader, but all you have to do is attend the class and take good notes to do well; no extra reading required. And she always helps out during office hours too
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. She has decent lectures but no slides so if you miss class and don't get the notes you're in a lot of trouble. Her tests are much harder than her homework and it always feels like she's trying to trick you on purpose.
Tania Jordan's classes are massive, so it's really easy to get discouraged from taking her because of the significant number of people who have bad things to say. However, there definitely are many people who do well in her class, but may not take the time to rate her. She's a very solid prof, just do the work and keep up. It really isn't bad.
does not explain material clearly and expects her students to have the same knowledge in economics as her.
A great economics professor, especially the the intro level. The whole point of the class is to study your notes clearly as you go on. Her class is definitely a weed-out class for Cox. Final is optional if you get an A and there was an extra credit exam administered when I took her. She's stern but fair.
There is nothing quite as jarring as the experience of sitting next to the person Tania busts for using their phone. At first you think she is looking at you, then you realize she is looking at the poor sap next to you. Just know that you are inviting the righteous and feral wrath of Tania Jordan upon your poor soul if you use your phone.
good mems, or more like PTSD a year later. I've gotten an A in every Cox class and barely managed a B with Tania.... seriously, if you're a good student she still doesn't care. Knows EVERYONE'S name and will viciously cold call. Advice to freshmen is to avoid at all costs.
Tania is actually a good teacher if you have exposure to Econ before taking the class. Her 4 tests are 40 MC with 2 bonus, so if you understand the concepts it's really not too bad. Also you can drop a test or not take the final if your grade is high enough. If you go to her classes, take good notes, and do all of the HW an A is easy (90%+).
lecture heavy but good teacher
When I signed up for this class everyone told me to drop it. The class is honestly not that bad. As long as you go to class and take good notes, study overtime and not cram, and do the homework you'll be fine. The grading policy is super easy, I didn't have to take the final. However, she does learn names and faces and will call students out rudely
This is the worst class. Do not take it. Delay a semester if you have to. Trust me.
Got an A in my last Eco class but not in this one. Tania is a bad professor. Distracts the class when she calls people out, vicious attitude, surprising to the point of laughable comments toward students, crazy hard tests, unhelpful teaching, little mercy. My first B+ in over 50 college credit hours. Not worth the stress. Avoid if you can.
The hardest class I have ever taken. Her tests are so hard.
I was given a warning about her the first day of class by a friend who switched that first day. I 1000% regret not switching into a better professor. Tania is immature and orchestrates class in the worst way. I highly rely on my textbook because she only puts graphs on the board, no notes, no projector, just marker which is hard to read in alecture
So here tests are out of 40 and the first one i got a 28/40, a 70, and when she switched it over to the online grading, she put the score in as 28/100. She had done this weeks later, after I had thrown away my test answer sheet. So I confronted her to talk about it and she said she needed the proof to correct her mistake. SO she boned me with a D-
Had her for both 1311 and 1312, decent lecturing as always. Tests are fair since she covers everything in the lectures. Don't expect to get an A without attending every class and paying attention. People who complaining generally don't pay attention or even go to the class. Her lectures will give you a solid foundation for further business classes.
Worst teacher I have ever had at SMU. She does not care about her students, she does not post her lectures on canvas and she does not help when you try to go into outside of class. Writes on the board, does not post on Canvas. Lectures are awful. Very hard exams. Took her for Macro. WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD DO NOT TAKE HER
Tania is one of the best professors to take econ from. Everyone who doesn't like her either didn't study for her tests and got a bad grade or was messing around in class and got called out. She goes over all the material that she tests on, so if you know the material you can get an A. She also drops the lowest test grade so the final isn't required
Not a very good teacher. She calls out people in front of the entire class for going to the bathroom. She doesn't cover the material very well and her tests are meant to confuse you. Would stay away from this teacher. I really had to work for my A in her class. It helped that I took Micro before college.
Tania's lectures are very clear and easy to follow. They're not the most interesting, but I really felt like I understood the material because of the way she presented it. Yes, she can be a bit harsh when she calls people out during class for being on their phones or sleeping, but if you just do what she asks of you, she is actually very nice.
Have to be there for the lectures to take notes. Nice professor but tough.
Everyone says shes the hardest and meanest but shes actually so nice. If you pay attention, do homework, and study a couple hours before the test its honestly an easy A. Dont waste your money on the actual text book I havent opened it once.
If you make an A in the course, you don't have to take the final. She's strict on phones in the classroom and will call you out by name. If you go every to class, pay attention, and take good notes you'll make an A. She doesn't take attendance but if a lot of people are absent she'll give a pop quiz. Tests are based on lectures so go to class.
Awful professor. Loves to call people out in class. Gives pop quizzes if she notices there are some students not in class. She intentionally makes her test questions tricky. Take another a professor if you can. If not, good luck.
Overall I would not recommend. She makes the class pointlessly difficult with trick questions and her policies are weird, unhelpful, and unclear. For example, she changed the time of our final exam to contradict the university's pre-set schedule and failed to communicate that she was doing so.
Took this class first semester freshman year and loved it. Her grading scale is a bit confusing but I assure you it is far easier to get an A than it seems. Each test (3), final and hw/pop quizzes is 25% and she drops one test. Do the homework and GO TO CLASS and youll do well. seems mean in class but is very nice and helpful in office hours
She gives out 4 exams and 1 can be dropped. My motivation in this class was just to ace the first 3 exams and then not have to take the final. Doing it that way makes finals week a little easier and less stressful. You need to pay attention during her class and reviewing notes once a week is EXTREMELY helpful. Helpful during office hours.
Only need an average of 90% to get an A in the class with the grade system in place. Don't even need to take the final if you have an A before the final. The class is very boring though, but go to learn the material she teaches. There are also 3 pop quizzes during the year so you gotta hope you make it to all 3 of them. Not really hard, good class.
She is the worst. Tried to stop me and million other kids from entering the business school but I will prevail! Hahahaha jokes on her
This class is a rough. You MUST go to class and take notes as that is your only study material for exams. She posts nothing to aid you in studying or succeeding in the class. She is quite unkind to anyone that slightly upsets her, keep your phone out of sight and god forbid you go to the bathroom. I would recommend taking literally anyone else.
most disrespectful teacher I have ever taken. enough said.
Super hard teacher, who does not attempt to help students. Extremely aggressive towards all students. DO NOT TAKE.
Bottom line do not take this class. She is a miserable teacher from both an academic and personal standpoint. She is not invested in her students success whatsoever and is incredibly immature. If you want to take a class where you are yelled at for going to the bathroom and are completely on your own for studying then look no further than Tania.
Honestly, her lectures are basically in the form of a storyline so you kinda have to pick out what's noteworthy & what's not. She has random pop up quizzes. I missed one day and we had a quiz that day and she won't drop it even tho we're allowed three absences per class smh. Idk if its her being lazy but she doesn't give us any reviews for the test
Do not take Tania AT ALL COSTS. She does not care if her students succeed. She chooses the hardest, most complicated questions from the test bank that she uses. Does not give any guidelines on what to study. You can do well if you put countless hours into studying, but this class has to be your number one priority for the entire semester.
WORST TEACHER EVER. She lectures without using notes. She speaks fast and hardly writes anything on the board. Exams are extremely hard multiple choice and usually trick questions. Doesnt give anything specific to study to prepare for exams. Doesnt go over exams after grading. I didnt skip class and kept studying up and struggled to keep a B.
Classes are only lectures. She drops your lowest test! Lots of pop quizzes randomly in the middle of class from the lectures she's JUST given so take detailed notes/pay attention! Makes you work hard, but one of the kindest and most encouraging professors at SMU if you attend office hours, ask questions, and put in work outside of class!!
I heard a lot of horror stories about Jordan, but her class honestly wasn't bad. If you go to class and take good notes, you'll definitely get 100 on any pop quizzes she gives. Overstudy for the first test, but they're straight forward and not tricky. Take advantage of the extra credit ALEC sessions. Don't be afraid to take her.
Shes not a bad prof. Yes I failed the first test (which she drops) cuz I studied for 30 minutes the night before. The material is not hard so dont overthink test questions its usually the simple answer. Homework and pop quizzes are 25% so go to every class and do the homework. Go into office hours she may give points back on tests. Read textbook
WORST teacher I have ever had. Every person I talked to that took it before also said it was awful. Tests are extremely hard, her accent is hard to understand and she is not good at explaining things. You think you start to understand it and then she makes you even more confused. if you go in for help it is still not explained well.
Terrible. Very hard to understand, takes off lots of points for phone and BATHROOM USE. Hard tests, gives pop quizzes when the classroom looks empty. She does not teach well, or explain well, to do well you must spend hours with your nose in the textbook.
Overall a good professor, sometimes goes on way too long about topics that don't need to be talked about and the class feels really long but she teaches what you need to know. Each test has 40 questions and 2 bonus and she drops the lowest test. Don't buy the textbook, way too expensive and completely useless.
The worst teacher I've ever had. Her lectures are confusing and don't go along with the textbook. She rambles on about topics that don't matter. Gives pop quizzes when she thinks students skip. She's strict, mean, and not very flexible at all. Just about the only good thing about her is the point system that she uses to grade.
This class isn't hard. Sure she is not a nice person and will yell at you for being on your phone and not paying attention. But if you go to class you don't have to read at all. Study your lecture notes and the homework before the test and you will pass with an A and not even have to take the final.
She's literally the worst. I hate this woman. She's called the cox block for a reason.
Tania gives pop quizzes throughout the semester but doesnt make class mandatory, so if you happen to skip class youll get a 0 for the quiz and theres only a few. Her lectures are hard to keep up and fully understand. Using the workout to study for the tests definitely help but wording on tests is difficult.
Macroeconomics with her was hard. If you can choose a different teacher I would, but if you are good at econ and a teacher's pet you could probably pull off an A in this course.
Honestly created this account because of Tania. I have never loathed a teacher as much as this woman. Her lectures are rambling and often incoherent, she offers absolutely nothing more than what she provides in class, and is frequently blatantly disrespectful to people who genuinely missed a point she made and wanted to clarify. STAY FAR AWAY.
Never take this professor. She is just a terrible person in general. Makes the class insanely difficult and wants to see all her students fail. Gives pop quizzes almost every class so make sure you are there. Do not even consider leaving to go to the bathroom unless you want to lose points. I cannot emphasize how awful this woman is.
I attended all of her lectures, completed all the homework, put in many hours of studying but still was not successful. The course moves very quickly and she does not slow down. She accepts extra credit, but I do not recommend this professor.
You really have to work for the grade you want. The tests are tricky and truly a test of application of your knowledge rather than regurgitating what you read. Her lectures are very content heavy and easy to get lost and she doesnt post them anywhere so if you skip class good luck. Do NOT recommend.
Tania is indisputably the worst teacher Ive ever had in my life. Her only goals are displaying her authority over students and ensuring that tests have unfair questions. My hatred towards her teaching methods have now developed into personal hatred. Not even top students enjoy her class. Please avoid taking her class at all costs!
Hardest class ever! Do not take! Tests are extremely hard. Take someone else if you can.
ECO 1312 was a breeze. I would read the textbook and show up to class. I easily got an A on all three exams, so I didn't have to take the final.
Worst economics professor at SMU. Her teaching is awful and she rambles on tangents. She is horrible at explaining information and her lectures do nothing to prepare you for the tests. Her tests are awful as well and the questions go out of the way to trick you. Do not take her. Anyone else.
Was in the hospital during her 8AM class and she gave me a 0 for the quiz that I missed that day because I didn't let her know before class that I wasn't going to make it. Ended up getting more school officials involved but they said they couldn't do much to change my grade. She is not reasonable at all with her students.
Professor Jordan is super funny! Her lectures are long and very informational, so make sure not to skip her class. Tests can be a bit hard, but if you read the textbook and do the homework, you should be fine.
Professor Jordan made this class way more difficult than need be. Her lectures are confusing and hard to follow; she also lectures from the very beginning of class until the very end. I took this class virtually which increased the difficulty. I don't recommend taking this class taught by Professor Jordan.
Her reputation on campus does not fit my experience in her class. I dreaded taking her based on everything I heard but she's not that bad. All I did was read the texts, go to class, and easily did well on all 3 of her exams. No final because I was happy with my grade, so I'm coasting. Just take her, she's good.
Professor Jordan might be THE worst teacher Ive ever had. Ive never had someone try to explain the material and fail so dramatically. Its almost impossible to learn from her in this course and her test grades literally make zero sense as you cant see what you got wrong.
Not impossible to get a good grade, just go to class or read the textbook. Her lectures are great and easy to follow if you actively listen. She follows a textbook closely so reading the book is just like a lecture if you don't want to go to class. Book also has alot of practice tests that the real test gets its questions from so use that to study
Just not a good teacher. Attendance isn't required but definitely recommended or else you'll be extremely confused. Her lectures are necessary to attend, but she'll go off topic for 5-10 minutes at a time, and by the end of that class you'll still need to use other resources to understand the material. Tests are all trick questions to confuse you.
Absolutely worst professor I have had
Avoid her at all costs. The literal worst.
SHE IS HORRIBLE! DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU CAN AVOID IT. She is a much better micro teacher than macro. She really just does not want her students to succeed unless they are perfect. Is not understanding at all. She lectures for 1:20 minutes straight and writes minimal notes on the board. The tests are hard and 75% of the grade.
May be better during in person classes but is the literal worst for online classes. While just about every other teacher utilizes panopto to help their students during the pandemic, she refuses to use this and makes it so it's damn near impossible to figure out necessary info for the test. Does everything to make things difficult for her students.
She is widely regarded as the worst Econ professor at SMU. If you have any other choice for an Econ professor please take them instead. Her class is lecture heavy but somewhat scrambled and I never got much out of them. The tests are relatively hard and I always feel as though she slips in weird questions/options to trip students up. It's a grind.
Im not exaggerating in the slightest when I say that she shouldnt be a professor. Ive never had this much difficulty or butted heads with any teacher in my life before I took her class. She gives pop quizzes that dont show how much time you have left, so you take it and it just submits out of nowhere. Then she blames you for her flaw. Mean lady
I made this account just so I could leave this woman a rating. I would give her a 0 if possible. She is condescending and heartless to her students. Doesn't post any lectures and gives you little to no material to go off of. I question every class how she has not been evicted from this campus. Good luck if you get her.
She has said that she refuses to excuse absences for funerals as "attending one is a choice." Also refused to let me take a quiz after I missed her 8 am while I was sick with COVID, taking points off my final grade and telling me to "please refer to the syllabus." She doesn't lecture effectively and gives assignments with very vague criteria.
How she has been a professor here for 31 years is beyond me. Taking her class makes me want to drop out and/or blackout. I am still enrolled which probably shows where I'm at right now.
She's fine, but picks people she doesn't like so be attentive bc she'll make class a pain if she doesn't like you. Read the book and ask questions and you'll do fine. My biggest gripe is that she makes the class harder than it needs to be by restricting class materials (won't give a powerpoint or recroding of the class).
Boring lectures, not friendly and not understanding. GO TO CLASS, take notes and focus during the lectures. If you do this, you won't have to read the textbook and will be fine on the tests. I did that, skimmed my notes once a week for 15 mins, and studied my notes for the exams. Easily got an A and didn't have to take the final exam. GO TO CLASS!!
She's not impossible. Just go to class and pay attention. Her lectures are long but are really easy to follow. She follows the textbook really closely so just read that if you want to skip class. The textbook also has practice tests that are almost identical to the actual thing so doing a ton of those before an exam is the best way to prepare.
Lectures all class, stopped posting recordings on panopto so students had to join zoom. homework was difficult, tests were super hard. she's difficult to understand and rude. hated this class and couldn't understand the material.
She makes the material concise and easy to understand. A lot of people don't like her but if you show up and don't fall asleep she'll like you. Material is easy and so are tests. There's minimal homework and short quizzes sometimes. Also you can drop a test at the end of semester.
During times she can be pretty disrespectful and mean to some students. She goes off on rants during lectures and veers of the course material. The tests are all 40 question multiple choice but to pass do not listen to lectures, she gives contradictroy information, meaning what she says in class is the complete opposite from the answers in the test
Sometimes she can be pretty disrespectful and mean to some students. She teaches alot of contradictory information when compared to the tests, meaning what she says in class is the complete opposite from the answers in the test. This makes it really hard, even though introductory macroeconomics is not too difficult
Good person but a horrible professor. She does not respond fast to emails. She somehow teaches wrong? I went to ALEC for help and they always correct the equations I wrote because Tania wrote them wrong on the board during class. Take someone else because you can do good in econ but you won't if you have her as a professor.
Worst experience ever. Avoid her class at all costs. Doesn't care about students or their well-being. If you get stuck in her class, only her office hours would help. (They are in the middle of day. Probably in the middle of your other classes) Mask crazy, lectures don't cover enough, not a good teacher. Finally, avoid at all costs. Ruined my year.
The worst teacher at SMU. Could care less about your feelings or your grade. She wants her students to do bad. She cares more about catching students cheating than teaching the material. Overall a terrible teacher for ECON. SMU's economics department is pretty horrible as a whole though anyways. But Tania is the worst of them all
THE WORST PROFESSOR! She tries to teach but makes everything confusing. There's honestly no point in showing up to her class because you'll learn more from the book than you will from her. The only good this about this class was that she drops your lowest grade.
Most people find Professor Jordan to be unbearable. I call it a win that I didn't fall asleep in her lectures. Her office hours are helpful. Her teaching style won't mesh with everyone but if you listen in class you won't have to do so much work. The book is expensive but worth it. Lots of practice problems and feedback. 3 out of 4 tests + HW grade
If you are a freshman, dont take this class. It is very test heavy and if you dont know how to properly study your screwed.
Tania can be stern and sometimes rude to students and is lecture heavy, however people over exaggerate it. I got an A simply by reading the textbook and doing the HW's. I found that she explained most topics well. If you don't go on your phone/fall asleep/distract others, she won't call you out. She didn't even take attendance this semester.
Professor Jordan is the worst. She shows no sympathy for her students at all. Even if you have attended class and done every single homework assignment and miss ONE with a good excuse she shows absolutely no sympathy and is just the absolute worst. Do no take her.
Don't take her
This course is not nearly as bad as most reviews. If you put in time studying and completing the homework you will succeed. She is not the best professor, but also not the worst. You will have four exams and get to drop your lowest grade. Do not fear taking her!
Professor Jordan really knows her stuff. She is able to articulate and explain the concepts of microeconomics in a really good way. Just make sure to pay attention, not goof off, and study for the tests, and you will do fine.
You basically have to teach yourself. The textbook is helpful. Make sure you do good on the quizzes (which are all take home and open note) because they're weighted as much as an exam. I don't think she's as bad as people are making her out to be. Her lectures are helpful for taking good notes and she gives you a review sheets before every exam.
This professor can NOT teach. She never gave back tests and did not care about the success of her students. The grade is based on 3 tests (take four and you get to drop the lowest score) and homework. Over 70 students dropped the class because the tests were so hard and their GPA suffered. Avoid her if you can.
Tania is very lecture heavy so you NEED to take notes and write down almost everything she says because it will really help you when studying for exams. Go to class bc if you dont your not gonna do well on her exams (theyre hard). Highly suggest you use the online resource that she makes you get at the beginning of the semester it will save you.
Dont let the other bad reviews intimidate you. She explains micro really well and connects it to the real world, making her lectures interesting. Do not skip her lectures, I never read the textbook and only based off my lecture notes and I was good. Her test questions are like the examples she does in class so write those down!
Don't let the review below this one trick you, Tania is horrible. She makes Micro confusing, which I thought was impossible. She provides nothing in terms of review materials and her lectures are literally useless. The only way you survive is if you read the textbook like it's your job. Didn't even give tests back or try to review them.
A lot of people dislike Tania. However, she is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is very lecture heavy, you go in and listen to her talk all class. The key to succeeding in her class is to take VERY VERY good notes. Write down everything she talks about. I suggest taking notes on an iPad to stay organized. You drop one test & one hw.
would I take it again? NO. Is she a good professor? Yes because it remove the weak links from COX but she is very uptight and does not work with you.
Professor Jordan's tests are genuinely torture. She gives absolutely no study guide or indication what the test will cover so naturally you study class notes and homework only to discover, the test has questions over topics never one discussed. She lies about what you need to do and blames others for the fact that so many students fail her class.
Tania Jordan is pretty good at lectures but at times can be very confusing. Her class overall was difficult and she did not seem to care about her students grades and does not care if they are struggling or their well being. If you want to pass with a good grade I recommend to not take her class.
Her lectures are all you need to pass the class. Unfortunately, that means you need to attend every single class and then constantly review your notes for it. I managed to exempt the final, but I took detailed notes and would have study sessions before the test. She also gave my class a study guide, which did not happen for the second semester.
She is a very long-winded lecturer and it is almost identical to the textbook that you are supposed to read before class. Her lectures are redundant and unhelpful. If you are misfortunate enough to be stuck in her class, complete the homework on time, read the textbook, complete practice problems in the textbook, and simply skip going to class.
only a handful got a B and the rest barely passed. Her lectures aren't the same as the questions on the test. If your able to find another teacher, take them instead
I love Tania Jordan. She is so sweet and genuienly wants her students to succeed. People hate on her bc they're too lazy to study and don't use their resources correctly. The class isn't that hard if you just pay attention in lectures, take notes, and do the practice problems in the textbook. It is an easy A if you put in a little effort.
Tania's class is easy if you take notes, go to class, are good with in-class whiteboard lectures, and study practice problems on Cengage for tests, but she doesn't post anything on canvas. I don't agree with the teaching philosophy that Tania uses though and would avoid taking her again. If you don't understand a topic go to office hours!
horrible.
This class repeatedly failed to turn me on. On numerous occasions I was hardly able to breach half mass. 0/10 would not smash
By far the worst economics teacher ever. She lectures every class and I walk away having learned nothing even after paying attention and taking notes. The class is almost all dependent on test grades. These tests are much more difficult than any other micro class and she is not very understanding or helpful.
I had the opportunity to switch to another micro teacher at the beginning of the semester. Oh how I wish I did. Only makes the material more confusing. The tests are just ridiculous. You cannot see your final grade-- she locks it. Do not take. The class only gets more infuriating further down the semester. Good luck if you get stuck with her.
The class is entirely taught via white board lecture, no PowerPoint or other visuals. No computers allowed, hand notes or iPad only. The class is not too hard and you can drop one test (including the final). If you show up and take notes you will probably do well. 90% gets you a full A (no A minuses). She will like you if you sit in the front.
This is not an easy class, if you don't learn well in lecture classes you'd be better off with another teacher. 75% tests, 25% homework, she drops one of each. Look over your notes (I rewrote mine after every class) and use cengage to study for tests. Don't take if you're prone to skipping class, miss one class and you'll be behind. Good luck.
Sit in the front. Her lectures are strictly taught on the whiteboard and verbally. Do not miss class! The best study method for her class is using the adaptive test prep for each chapter. If you practice using the test prep multiple choice questions on Cengage and review the homework, they are incredibly similar to the tests.
Tania is one of those teachers you want to like because she can be funny, but there's something off about her. I was lucky and worked hard with tutors and classmates and passed with a good grade, but her lectures were so confusing and often had no clear outline. Sometimes attendance was not mandatory because the book was clearer than her ideas.
Personally, I was able to learn a lot from Professor Jordan. It is important to go to class, pay attention, and take notes. The lectures are important but Cengage is a great learning tool, use the practice questions to study for all the tests. She will post reviews which also help. If you put in the work you should be able to do pretty well.
NEVER EVER EVER. I usually love my professors and school, but this professor enjoys watching people fail and is extremely condescending. Accuses many students of cheating each semester with no grounds. Absolutely disrespectful and made me switch my major. If shes your only option, wait another semester its not worth it -- I PROMISE
DO NOT TAKE TANIA JORDAN. By far the most condescending, insulting and disrespectful professor I have ever encountered. You could do everything she says and she still won't pass you. She picks on kids and judges their questions in class and in office hours. If you have to take this class, wait a semester for a different professor it's worth it.
The worst professor at SMU. The entire student body collectively knows Tania as the WORST professor. She is so rude to students and makes fun of them for being confused or getting questions wrong. She makes no effort to actually teach anything in office hours without being condescending. Her lectures are an hour and a half of her facing the board.
Test heavy. Lectures are insanely boring, hour and a half of her just talking. If you miss a class, you have to get notes from classmates. She posts nothing on canvas. I did well in this class by doing a lot of practice questions on cengage, but so many people in my class struggled.
I am still super confused about all the negative feedback about her. Her class is engaging if you pay attention to her lecture. She is also helpful during office hours and emails. Few extra credit opportunities, and her exams do not align with her lectures, which is one of the most significant downsides. Besides those, she is a fantastic professor.
I don't think she should get as bad of a rep as she does. Lectures are long and boring but she teaches everything during class I never read the textbook. Make sure to try hard on the homeworks, and do ALL the cengage practice problems before the test. You can also drop your lowest test grade (out of 4) and lowest homework grade.
I got my first-ever C in this class. There are 4 exams and one can be dropped. I never missed a class, went to office hours, and read the textbook, yet it was not enough. Professor Jordan makes the course content interesting, but if you don't understand foundational concepts, you're out of luck. She is helpful one-on-one and cares, but not enough.
75% tests 25% homework. No partial credit and one chance on every homework (basically a quiz each time). My suggestion, go to office hours so you can get as many homework points as possible and then do well early in the year. It is possible to get an a, just not super easy. Use cengage for practice problems and to check your understanding.
I had to drop this course but it was honestly b/c I got behind. Dr. Jordan is kind and wants to see students put in effort. She lectures heavy and this class requires you to study outside of class, take really good notes, and show up to class! She was confusing at times, but the book was easier to follow and the pre-exam/hw questions were helpful.
This professor is easily one of the worst instructors I have ever had. Save yourself the time and energy and do not take this class. Her lectures are long, boring, and repetitive. She gives no leniency or grace under any circumstances and has absolutely no understanding for any issue you may have outside of her class.
Tania gets a lot of hate and coming into this semester I was super nervous to take her course. She is a great teacher and will drill her lectures into your head but the tests are hard. On the first test, I got a C- and then I got an A. I would recommend attending her office hours, if you work for it you can succeed!!
Attendance is mandatory. Lectures are long and boring. 4 exams Homework assignments I did not enjoy this professor. Taking this course was a waste of time and money. If you can take another professor you should!
If econ comes easily to you, you will be fine in this class, but if you are not a natural, be prepared to work and still not get a good grade, even if you took AP Micro or Macro. Tests look nothing like homework or in-class notes and she uses different terminology than the textbook so it's useless. Pay attention and go to office hours.
My class started with 50 people and ended with 10 after the drop date. Her tests are difficult, even if you study. I went to every office hour she had and decided to drop the class because I had a D and did not want to risk failing her class(I had a 4.0 in hs and got an A in every other class at SMU). I will be taking another professor over summer!
When taking notes you have to right down the explanations not just the definitions of terms. Read your notes then use practice problems to check your understanding then go to office hours if you do not understand it. Reading your notes and explaining the concepts to yourself is the best way to learn. There are no PowerPoint just lectures.
Create a study group because the concepts you don't understand someone else might understand and the concepts you understand someone else might be struggling with. Teaching each other and learning together helped me. She is a harsh attendance grader.
She's really tough, but she's one of the better lecturers at SMU. Well-paced class, not too fast. Drew the graphs by hand explaining them step-by-step, making notetaking easy. Homework is based on the textbook but you can find the answers online. For tests, review your notes the most, then homework solutions, and lastly keywords in the textbook.
Professor Jordan has an INSANELY bad reputation on campus but I found her course manageable. Studying for tests was hard but rewarding if you put the work in. The lectures were confusing, and the online homework was TERRIBLE: one attempt with even more confusing questions. One warning: she gets enraged if you take photos of the lecture material.
Every student on her first test is learning what her tests are like and how to study. Be prepared. go to her office hours and have her walk you through and test you, it will be test like questions to prepare you, that is the only way I passed. Talk to her and she will work with you
Awful, just awful
Tania may be a nice enough person, but is an awful teacher. The way she teaches economics overcomplicates simple concepts. The only reason I got a good grade in the class is because I spent hours outside of the class reading the textbook and using online videos to teach me. Be prepared, she also doesn't allow cell phones or laptops.
I liked this class and didn't find it too difficult. Tania has a bad reputation, but she was VERY accessible and I learned a lot. She appreciates if you put in even the slightest bit of effort bc most don't. Just scan the textbook before class and it'll make way more sense. Use office hrs if you need help! She offers quite a bit of extra credit.
Honestly it amazes me she is still employed. Year after year you hear terrible things about her class and they are all true. Anyone you ask who takes micro with another teacher has no complaints, so essentially the school deems your ability to have a good Gpa and work towards your Econ major as luck. As soon as you see her name, drop the class.
Tania knows what she is talking about and is very smart in terms of economics but her lectures are hard to understand because she does not speak perfect English and makes confusing examples. She does not do a great job of conveying information and the textbook is online. All the homework combined counts as a test grade. Be ready to teach yourself.
I am very smart at econ so I got an A. But do me a favor and take another teacher. She is impossible for no reason.
Very boring lectures and very lecture heavy. Difficult to understand, even when paying attention in class. The only thing that got me through this class was watching YouTube videos, which greatly helped to understand the material. Avoid her if you can
Drop or swap immediately!!! She is known throughout campus as one of the worst professors and I can see why. All my friends swapped the first week and I made the mistake of sticking through it. Any other economics professor is 10x better. Just know, I warned you.
I think Tania gets an unfair rep at SMU. Her tests are extremely lecture heavy, so if you don't go or pay strong attention in class, you won't do well. She's a good lecturer and tests are primarily based on everything thought in class. If you show her that you care, she'll make the equivalent effort to help you succeed in her class.
I took Tania my first semester of Freshman year. Looking back, I would take her again. I did receive a B-, but that's only because I didn't go to office hours or email her with my questions. If you access her outside of class and show you care, you'll do well.
Tania gets a ton of flak but I've had worse. Her tests were normal enough but she gave us a lobotomy each lecture. She calls out and make fun of students for photographing lecture material even at 8am. She was quite accessible at office hours and willing to help me though. My dad and I agreed the Mindtap HWs were a joke. Don't take her if possible.
My roomate ended up in rehab because of this class.
Absolute worst. If you get her switch out as soon as possible. good luck to whoever is in her class.
Not as bad as people make her out to be. She is very good at explaining complex Econ topics; if you go to class, listen, take notes, and study you can do well. Her tests are designed in a way that if you don't go to class or study, you will fail. I found the textbook super helpful.
Definitely not as bas as she is made out to be, i think she was a great teacher and prob the best lecturing ive had. She just doesnt make the class easy for you, but shes a very nice lady and very helpful in office hours if you dont understand something. To get a good grade you have to really know the material for the tests.
She's a great teacher, people complain too much on here even if the professor is good. The problem is that now all the professors have bad profiles and we can't determine the good from the bad anymore. Jordan is a great lecturer and teaches to the test, study over the long haul not last minute, and attend office hours for a good experience!
I don't understand what people complain about so much with her, she's not that hard. Go to class, take notes, visit with her in office hours. She is really kind and cares as much as you show her you care. You get the experience you put in like with any other professor.
Professor Jordan receives a lot of bad reviews, and if you don't respect her rules, it would make sense why people view her teaching style so negatively. All she asks of her students is to attend class on time, not use phones or laptops during lectures, and do the homework. If you do these simple things, you will succeed in this class. DO THE WORK!
dont take.
If you see her name, drop the class immediately. Cox blocker.
Rated poorly probably because she can be rude but if you go to all the classes and take notes during lectures, the tests are super easy. She also has minimal homework and no reading compared to the other econ professors.
I have consistently been a straight-A student, taking the hardest honors classes. When faced with a challenging course, I dedicate extra time and effort to excel. However, in Tania's class, this approach falls short. Her lectures are overly complex, seemingly designed to confuse everyone in the class. I highly advise everyone to drop her class.
Cox blocker for a reason. Also gives pop quizzes, and they're always at the end of class, so if you happen to have to leave early for whatever reason; good luck sitting with the 0 in your grades.
I literally failed
I did not learn at all from this class. She goes through lectures extremely fast and does not finish her thoughts before moving to a new idea. If you can I would extremely recommend finding a new professor before it is too late if you get her. There are no quizzes you are only graded on four tests and your homework. There is no extra credit.
awful. drop.
Extremely difficult, avoid anything you can to not take
I don't understand the terrible reviews. Yes this is a tough class but she genuinely wants you to succeed.
Tania is easily my least favorite professor at SMU. I took her last spring, and every bad review is true. She was rude all semester, even though I attended every office hour and worked hard. Her lectures are confusing, so take vigorous notes. If you can avoid her, do it.
For god sake just listen to her and you'll do well. Make sure to do the mindtap practice questions as a form of studying.
Show up to class, participate, don't be on your phone or leave class and you'll do fine.
Excellent professor, no idea why her reputation is so shoddy but all SMU profs are being maligned for no reason nowadays with this new class of children. Do your work, listen to what she teaches, go to office hours, she actually cares and is a great professor. Some of these Cox business bros are being humbled, don't like it, cry like little b's.
4 Tests, She drops one, not too bad of a class if you put in the work
Do not take her class if you aren't very familiar with econ already. Super hard tests imo. Not allowed to use phones, calls you out in class all the time.
The class is hard, but if you're good at memorizing or test-taking, you're fine. Grade is determined by 4 tests (3 midterms + final) + hw. She drops the lowest test and hw grade, so final is optional if you're already happy with your avg. Hardest thing abt it was large knowledge load and how tricky questions were worded, otherwise wasn't awful
Do not take unless you took AP econ or are good at econ. I have never worked so hard at a class to have so little return. The kids that are saying her tests are easy must be good at the class. I learned that micro is not my strength so I studied a ton and went to TA and her a few times but it didn't help. Not worth the amt of work
She is very clear about expectations and will call out people for not listening to those like using their phone in class, being late, taking pictures of lecture material. Less homework and reading than other Econ professors. Just show up to class and take good notes then study those for the test, not the textbook. 4 tests with one dropped
Do not take this class, especially if you have a hard time paying attention to lectures. Every class is a lecture, and if you're not paying attention it is so easy to miss something. The only grades in this class are homework quizzes and tests. Try to take a different teacher if you can.
Would not recommend.
The course grading consisted of 4 exams, a homework average, and a final (can drop one exam). There is extra cred. through a core exam. She isn't afraid to call out anyone who seems to not be focusing. You have the physically write your notes. After hearing the reviews, I was worried about taking her course, but if you study you'll be fine.
Does NOT care about her students. I think that if I dropped dead in the middle of class, she would've gotten mad that I was "distracting others." DOESNT EVEN ALLOW YOU TO GO TO THE BATHROOM. The only thing I learned all semester was to not wait till the last minute to choose your classes, or you'll be stuck with the most terrible professor ever.
Tania Jordan is an infamous name on campus, but I don't think she's as bad as she's made out to be. She is very strict (no leaving during 80 min lecture, no pictures of board) and comes across rude sometimes but is more approachable if you go to office hours. Lectures can be boring but take decent notes, study hard for tests, and you're set.
she wakes up and writes what ever she wants on a whiteboard and before u can even write it down. she erases it. I paid zero attention to what she said in class and just focused on the book
Tests will try and trick you but shes really not as hard as people make her out to be, 3 tests and 1 final and your lowest gets dropped. You really do have to come to class every time, take notes on exactly everything she says, and be present to do well. Shes really not that bad and you will definitely be great at econ after you take her.
Don't take if you have to urinate during the day cause that's unallowed. Enjoy.
Worst teacher I've EVER had. My middle school history teacher could teach Econ better than her. She goes too fast and doesn't mention a lot of material in class that is on tests. Disrespectful person; you can tell she's unhappy in life. I didn't fail her class but over half her class was forced to drop Fall 2024 semester. DO NOT TAKE!
PLEASE RUN. whenever I mention my bad GPA, with no hesitation, upperclassmen look at me like, "Tania?" She's famous on campus, shes capable of extending ur hw but wont bc why would she. Her tests r unbelievably harder than most other econ teachers and if u miss a single lecture good luck bc she doesnt have anything on canvas.
I am usually a straight A or one B student, but I got 30s on the first two tests and had to drop. The professor im retaking the class with is a thousand times easier its ridiculous. No power points, she just talks and writes one sentence on the board about what shes saying. Take literally anyone else if you want to pass.
Nothing of what she does makes sense and she's purposely mean and hateful and sad. Spiteful too. Won't help at al and you can't use the restroom so if you piss a lot don't take her. This is the worst experience of my life and I was an all A student before this.
This professor is literally the worst professor I have ever had. She very clearly doesn't care about her students. I haven't ever taken Econ but I am usually an all A one B type of student. I failed. If you get her just drop the class unless you are really up for the challenge. Good luck.
I cannot stress enough how truly AWFUL tania is. 3 test and a final worth 75% of ur grade and 15 homework assignments worth 25% and tests are HARD. I'm currently retaking this class with another prof and it's alr such a breeze & i'm actually learning the material. Take this class with another prof!
Seriously, do not take this class. Only C I have ever gotten in my life. I regret it so much. The material isn't even hard, this woman just cannot teach. She has tenure so she will not be fired. Seriously, don't take her.
When you mention you're taking Tania to someone, the response is usually one of horror, compassion, or fear. Or all three.
She is unnecessarily impossible. Take an 8am with any other eco professor to AVOID at all cost
Tania is so unhelpful. Her lectures are confusing and make a little bit of sense. The homework is weighted so make sure to get 100% everytime to boost your grade on the tests that will average a 50%. Her quizzes are open note and her office hours are sometimes helpful but she will tell you if you are struggling to go review your notes
Test heavy & gives good feedback after tests and is much more sweet, caring, and helpful in office hours. 0 tolerance for phones/laptops. Explains concepts clearly in class but to a certain point it can get repetitive. Most reviews on here are overdramatic, but it definitely does take a bit more effort in this class than others to get an A.
Avoid taking her at all costs. Super strict attendance policy, if you get over 3 absences the punishment is a meeting with the dean. She's very rude and yells at students often for small things like taking pictures of the board. Her teaching style itself isn't awful, but the atmosphere she creates in the class is detrimental to learning.
She sucks lol. She refuses to use ppts or any other digital lecture format; the only way I was able to study effectively was by watching yt videos. She yells at students for the simplest things like taking pictures of her poorly drawn graphs or even getting up to use the restroom mid-lecture.
I honestly don't get the hate. She is good at explaining everything in ways that make sense. Are her tests hard? If you don't understand the content, yes. If you study, pay attention, take good notes, etc. Do normal good student things, her class is a breeze. She doesn't allow phones or laptops, which was not an issue for me. Ipads are fine
If you are not religious, pick one and PRAY! DO NOT take her, she is nice as a person but you will not pass her class. I studied 7+ hrs/day for her tests & failed. I went to her office hours many times and was no help because other 5-6 students were there, so she didn't explain/clear doubts, since she was rushed. + Her grading system is so weird.
I'm a straight A student. Normally I'm r@ping the game like that. Turns out the game r@ped me. Tania took my gpa and gave it VD. The hours I studied compared to the scores I received gave me learned helplessness. Actually gross.
She is the reason you can't see the names of ur professors when u take econ classes. She's famous at SMU for being the worst. I make a face when someone asks my gpa, and they do "Tania"?
She is an excellent professor. She is strict and has many rules but they're to help students learn. I have no idea why she's hated so much here and think it's more of a legend than her actual status. She's great if you need to learn econ. Better than the alternative Mea who read slides then draws random tests from the book. Take her!
Drop her class immeadilty if you have her, I went throguh the whole semester just to fail
Don't take her class.
Tania is smart and will challenge you. She has high expectations for her students and will demand respect, but she is AMAZING. If you are willing to work you will learn so much. Fair warning : there is such a thing as a stupid question in Tania's class. Be intentional in what you ask and use questions as a way to show your engagement with lecture!
Don't be scared. Her tests are hard, but if you pay attention in lectures and study before the tests, you will get a passing grade, I promise. She also lets you drop one test for the final. Don't be scared by the Rate My Professor.
Don't fall for the "nice lady" propaganda. Stay away from her and this class. But if you are stuck with her, just pray extra harder each night. Jokes aside, if you take amazing notes, study like you're a neurosurgeon, and know as much as Warren Buffet in the economy, you will be okay. At some point, you will ask yourself: Is this worth it? Nah
Horrible, horrible, horrible professor. Worst and hardest class I've ever taken. There are three exams and then a final which basically makes up your whole entire grade. I studied for about 15 hours before the third exam and ended up failing. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! She is the devil! Just went through a whole semester of hell just to fail the class.
Well, well, well... Tania. I have had some horrible nightmares in my life, having you as a teacher was the only one that came true. SMU said they got rid of hazing; I think NOT.
The good reviews must be written by her. WORST TEACHER EVER. She is disrespectful and straight up mean. Hardest tests ever. I'd rather take lesbian studies then have to take that class again. She told me to wear a diaper to class, because you cant use the bathroom.
This class tanked my GPA. Studied for hours and never got a good grade. Tests are difficult but if you do the practice questions on Mindtap you should be good. Take good notes. Only four grades are put in for this class so doing poorly on one thing is not ideal. Take homework seriously it is a huge grade boost if you get an A on homework.
Most overhated teacher ever. People hate her because they want to skip all their classes and get an A. If you show up and pay attention it is not that hard. Go to her office hours and you will easily become one of her favorites.
WORST teacher I have ever had. Horrible teacher. Never take her. Her test feel like you are sititng through an SAT!!!
Y'all complain too much on here. Tania just wants her students to ACTUALLY pay attention in her class. She is very nice if you genuinely put effort into her class and go to office hours. She is lowkey hilarious and entertaining in lectures. Her grading criteria is extremely clear. If you do well on the three exams, you won't have to take the final!
She could be an international terrorist wanted in several middle eastern countries. She is up there with Hitler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein and anyone else who has committed mass genocide.
She's probably a “good” person but her class is boring and hard for no reason. micro is a hard topic and to top it off you have three tests and they are really hard and written by ai. all she does is talk and even if you take notes it's hard to comprehend. for her “reviews” she sends a list of every single thing that she has ever talked about ever.
Tania can teach a topic well, it's just that her lectures are barely structured. Additionally, sometimes what you're tested on isn't in the textbook and at other times what you're tested on isn't in your notes. It's hard to study for something when you have no idea what you're about to be tested on.
Tania is not as bad as people say, but she is still frustrating. She makes the class really hard when the other econ teachers are easy. Getting an A is not impossible but its a grind. If you are struggling get on her good side by going to office hours.
Worst teacher I have ever had. I would not recommend. Very rude. Classes will start out with 100 students and slowly drop to around 30-40 people.
Worst teacher at SMU. All the positive reviews on here are her. DO NOT take this class.
