Groups get to work on real projects for companies or nonprofit organizations. She expects hard work but she also works hard, mentors and encourages.
Tania knows her rhetoric!f. She makes you work your butt off but if you do, you get results. Loves discussion and particpation and it counts for marks. Focus is not on memory and spitting it back out which is something different and something I enjoyed. I really liked her class and her. She's is a real asset to the uni I think
A lot of work, assignments every week. Is very critical towards writing, but willing to help.Attending class and participation is part of the grade which is nice.Expects a lot from first year writing.Generally helpful not so clear with expectations, needs to stick with one set of instructions rather than 3 different ones.
There was lots of work for this course. The reflections and readings were tedious, but if you did them, then it was easy marks! She is somewhat unclear as to what she expects in the papers you have to write, so go see her to discuss your paper, cause you will want to do well on it. There is no final, so the paper is a large percentage!
Honestly I really disliked her class. I dreaded going. She was very into expiriential learning and tons and tons of group assignments.
Smith teaches a 300 level course like it's a 200. Though students always seem to need help with their writing skills the material covered by Smith was just a massive review of high-school level grammar. Worse yet this course is required. She made us sit through our classmates presentations every day to teach us how to embarrass ourselves.
All time worst prof! She seriously makes you wonder how she ever attained a phd. Completely ridiculous.
The research course is challenging (midterm was a killer; proposal tough) but you learn a lot through practice, examples, lectures. I'm not so keen on her "sustainability" focus, but still learning a lot about research. She is really helpful when you ask her questions about your project.
NEVER EVER TAKE CLASS WITH HER. SHE IS THE MOST CONFUSING I EVER HAD.SHE IS A GOOD AND HELPUL PERSON BUT NOT A GOOD PROFF. HER EXAMS ARE KILLER. IF YOU WANT YOUR GPA TO GO DOWN, TAKE CLASS WITH HER. I M SURE NO ONE WANTS THAT. BE CAUTIOUS
Dr. Smith is the toughest prof in the C&C faculty, bar none. However, if you get good grades from her, you can do anything. She is very specific in what she is looking for, but not very good at detailing what those specifics are. She will not hold your hand through the class, but she is highly approachable and reasonable. Expect a huge workload.
I worked a lot more in this class than in my other courses =ridiculous.I dislike how she gave me advice for a paper & later completely contradicted herself when marking & explaining the grade. Most lecture readings=long, boring or irrelevant. However she is kind & can be easily reached. She can alsobe understanding. Reasearch=great learning experience

Really bad course material and totally boring. The teacher is kind, but is completely using the class as a guinea pig for new projects, thus, class material is all over the place and really boring readings. The assignments were decent as she is specific on what she wants, but exams were hardcore. All and all, nice person, bad bad bad teacher.
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Extremely unorganized and not clear on how to give her what she wants in terms of assignments. The only positive thing about this class was that there is no testing.
Although she is a tough prof with high expectations, she is always willing to help! I have taken 2 classes with her, and she has always been supportive and encouraging. If you want a gpa boost with no effort, you have to look elsewhere. But, if you want a caring, enthusiastic prof that you will learn lots from - take her courses ! =)
As a person Tania Smith is great and this is not a shot at her teaching, but her course load is too much. The workload is really intense. There are many little assignments that take time to complete and a huge project at the end that took many meetings outside of class to finish. Save yourself the grief and pick another profesor for this class.
I took COMS 363 online. It is all about effective communication, although ironically enough the assignments were delivered in the most ineffective way. When asked a question, prof compies and pastes sections of the course outline or assignment outline instead of helping, which i found condescending and anoying. I did not learn anything. Avoid!
Do not take ANY class taught by this professor. The work load is ridiculous and impossible to keep up with if you are taking a full course load. She is a ridiculously hard marker. She has three different websites that have different aspects of the course outline so it is impossible to locate anything and she is not helpful. Stay away.
Very helpful, supportive prof teaching an unconventional but worthwhile class that gets students out into the community doing real-world research. Take this course if you are willing to be flexible and face unexpected challenges. Dr. Smith is fair and reasonable and will help you work through roadblocks to get a great end result.
Really makes you wonder about U of C's hiring practices.
I would not recommend Dr. Smith to anyone. Her grading was only hard because he assignments were so vague. I was glad she used the textbook because she is not a clear communicator. I am also glad that I had previous experience in research methodology so that I was able to do assignments without her help.
The website used for this class can be confusing at times, coupled with the changing of how to do an assignment is very frustrating. Would not recommend.
Do NOT take an online class with her. Her assignment outlines were unbelievably vague and that resulted in her stupid hard marking. Before deadlines, I even made sure I was on the right track, and then I hand it in and apparently do everything wrong. Take the LECTURE with someone else! Much easier than online.
Way too much work required for a COMS class. The assignment instructions are very frustrating to follow. The course website is very hard to navigate. Do not take this class with her. If you do, have fun wasting more time on this class than your core classes.
Not an easy course to take online, the workload is ridiculous. I recommend taking this course in class, or online during spring/summer when the workload is less.
The course material is easy, but the way it is taught is unbelievably frustrating. The assignment outlines can be up to 20 pages long of confusing instructions for a simple assignment(which is ironic since it's supposed to be an effective communications class), followed by pages of Q&A with more instructions. Hard to follow.
Very nice professor. Hard but fair marker, it is useful to go see her at her office hours for extra guidance.
Awesome Professor, super nice, great guidance with assignments. Going to visit her during office hours is definitely recommended.
Nice person and very helpful. Tough course but worth the effort (and it does require effort!).
Dr. Smith is a great teacher and is extremely supportive and helpful to those who show an interest in the course. The opportunity to get real-world experience through service learning is very valuable and I'm glad I took this course.
Taking this class online with Dr. Smith was a poor life decision. She is extremely vague and when she is asked questions regarding assignments and quizzes, she just refers to her unnecessarily long instruction documents. What kind of doctor of communications requires a 11 page text document to explain how to write a 1200-1800 woird report? Dr Smith
Tania Smith is absolutely TERRIBLE when it comes to COMS 363 online. She does not post any lecture slides to compress the main ideas for the course, all she does is give students the assignments and the readings and then effectively lays back and does nothing. 10/10, would never recommend this prof to anyone who has another option of a prof.
Communications prof who is really really good at making herself sound smart through the use of large words, while under closer inspection reveals her to, ironically, be absolutely inadequate in terms of actual communication. Handbook was 100% Vague (Cause she wrote it)and riddled in errors, although it is apparently needed for 90% of this course.
This online course made me cry every time a quiz/paper was assigned. I get that it's an online course and that we're given a heavy course load. However, I don't understand how ambiguous instructions for papers count as effective communication (reading the instructions took 10x longer than doing the assignment). Dr. Tania replies quickly though.
Here I am as an engineer and instead of learning about communication in the workplace (and how to speak to people who are not engineers in laymans terms), I am learning about rhetoric appeals and how to conduct and analyze surveys. 2 goals in the workplace, design things and make sure people know what im saying. This class has no relevance at work.
Just don't take it online with her, there are plenty of great profs in both the spring and summer. Do not just rush in and say oh well its online and I want to get COMS over with. She is terribly vague and the handbook(that she wrote) fails to communicate effectively because she uses complex vocabulary that normal people don't use to sound smart.
For a Communications prof she does a horrible job in communicating the assignments. Very long reading is required for absolutely everything. Would not recommend her if you have the option to take it with someone else.
Real tough grader, she has lots of requirements that has to be fulfilled for all the writing assignments. She also has a heavy emphasis on argumentation where most of the class is geophysics, engineering and business majors, who focus on presentation of data rather than an argumentation.
For a communications prof, she is very bad at communicating, instructions for simple things are 10-20 pages; instead of learning to communicate properly we do rhetorical analyses. Using her textbook is mandatory and is written like a stupid person trying to sound smart, is very bloated and is mostly the opposite of what this course should be.
Avoid her at all costs. Best advice.
Don't take this class online. You will work more than what you would have worked on class.
It's unfortunate for the UofC to have T. Smith as a prof for a COMS class. She is not teaching students valuable and practical skills that will be used in the workplace. Useless. I have learned more about technical and prof. communication on my work term than in this class. The class alone is enough for me to NOT recommend students to attend UofC.
This class is not worth the money you spend, especially on a professor like Tania Smith. Spend your money elsewhere. It's ridiculous that students are learning irrelevant material that will be never used in the working world. Keep up with the times, Tania Smith. WE LIVE IN THE YEAR 2015. Wake up will you?
Grading scheme is absolutely ridiculous. She grades papers out of 93, since that is an A grade, then gives you that mark out of 100. So you basically lose 7% off the bat for no reason. Instructions are extremely wordy and vague, and you will lose a huge chunk of mark (usually 5% per infraction) if you happen to miss a minor instruction.
Dr. Smith provided over complex explanations that often complicated and confused me more. The whole course was basically analyzing webpages.
The assignment instructions were 10x longer and more complicated than the actual assignment. The instructions and handbook made by Dr. Smith only further confused me. I received a C in this class, and was not happy about this grade because I put a lot of effort in. Grading took a long time and criteria made little sense. Don't take this class.
Avoid this class at all cost. Quizzes were hard, assignments were lengthy and hard, and finally the marking scheme was very strict. If you must take this class, choose a different prof or be prepared to spend more time on this class than your cores.
Although Dr. Smith is generous in granting extension of assignments with a valid excuse, I caution anyone who plans to take this class. Be prepared to try to make sense of the instructions she provides for her assignments - instructions are scattered across three or more different d2l links that are 10 - 20 pages long. Very strict marker.
Should be an easy class, but unfortunately Tania is too illogical to properly teach it. Best advice: Avoid, avoid, avoid!
Dr. Smith is clearly knowledgeable on the topic, and I appreciated her enthusiasm in lecture. She was also very willing to help students who asked her for it. She definitely wants people to succeed. However, I felt that the courseload was extremely heavy, even for a 400 level class. This was by far the most stressful class in my entire degree.
Dr. Smith is very unclear with what she wants. WAY too many assignments. Everything is worth 10 percent. Whether it's a large essay that takes a week or a small presentation they are all weighted the same. On top of it she's a very hard and particular marker. I cannot stress this enough... DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM DR. SMITH. Avoid avoid avoid!
Readings were vague and confusing as were the assignment instructions. Students were assigned 2 presentations each. As a result in a 1hr and 15min class, 1 hour was spent viewing student presentations on topics with no relevance to the course. She does not lecture and instead analyzes online sources despite a lack journalistic knowledge. No bueno.
This prof is intense. Readings were long and boring, and the "quizzes" were so hard for what they were worth. She is SUCH a tough grader. While she wants her students to succeed, she marks so hardly that it's really difficult to do well. She's kind, and makes time for her students, but don't take any class with her unless you're up for a challenge.
She may be nice but I would avoid this professor at all costs. She is just very confusing a I don't remember having a proper lecture even once. I would advise you to read all the handbooks and just listen to her. She analyses articles in her classes, although she lacks knowledge in journalism. She makes the course hard and she can get annoying!
Insane. For a communication prof she is VERY bad at communicating, So much confusion in what we were expected to do yet SO much mumbo jumbo in reading. Avoid at all costs.
COMS 363 has a purpose to teach students to write with clarity, conciseness and get straight to the point. She, the instructor, has style and communication skills are the opposite of the goals of the course. From emails to assignment outlines, handbooks and resources, everything is long, repetitive, poorly organized, and contains useless info.
The organization of this course was poor. Dr. Smith's tone is frequently passive-aggressive and condescending. When asking for direct help and clarification, she (as others have mentioned) simply refers to the course outline, without actually assisting.
As others have said, she is terrible at communicating. If you are in engineering, take this class in spring or summer as there is a different prof and I've heard it's much easier.
The worst thing ever! She grades you so hard, makes your work for even scoring 1% mark . For participation grade you have to do a portfolio which was an assignment in itself, and then she asks for specific instructions font size, terminology. I would not suggest this class. It is a 400 level course but it should not overtake you whole life .
If you keep up with the class schedule and get ahead you should do fine. Dr. Smith is accessible at any time and is pretty good with responding to email. If you seek out help and use feedback you receive you should do fine
Sometimes I honestly come back to this page to see what people are saying about Dr. Smith. She was to date the worst prof I had in my entire COMS degree. These are all very accurate reviews. Do yourself a favour and STAY AWAY. She pretends to know a lot more than I'm convinced she actually knows - and then still marks you ridiculously hard.
When you send an email asking for clarification, she will reply condescendingly and refer you to some 3 d2l documents each around 20 pages long. If you are good at writing, the course itself isn't difficult, but the way she sets it up makes it a gigantic mess. Avoid at all cost.
Dr. Smith should not be teaching classes. Has clear criteria in her head for marking, but doesn't tell anyone what that criteria should be very well. She definitely knows a lot about communications and rhetoric and is a nice person but does not motivate students at all.
The class is A LOT of work and assignments are confusing and long
Material is hard but Tania provides all the resources you need to be successful in the course. Super nice and understanding.
I feel like Dr. Smith is being rated on the content that she is teaching, not her actual skill as a professor. She is friendly, insightful and full of knowledge. Always willing to answer questions and provide positive encouragement. Yes, Rhetoric is a hard course, and you will have to do lots of work. Ultimately, it is all to fine tune your skills.
Prof Smith is a terrific teacher, and communicates her enthusiasm for rhetoric very well. The subject itself may seem difficult because of its unfamiliarity, but for those who persevere it is very rewarding. Prof Smith is always available to offer help, but you have to do the work. Overall, a very worthwhile course.
Dr. Smith takes the time to give the most detailed and constructive feedback I have ever received on an essay. She makes herself available to help students reach their potential.
Dr. Smith is very knowledgeable and passionate about the content she teaches. I've read some feedback that complains about her classes being difficult and that she is a touch grader, but I disagree. I feel the class is challenging and her feedback provides the opportunity to dramatically improve writing. I highly recommend a class with Dr. Smith.
Although it was a difficult class, Dr. Smith was a good professor that taught this course well. Participation was a big part of the class and helped a lot with learning the subject matter.
Extremely confusing and difficult class due to the way she sets it up. Has about 300 documents (I'm not exaggerating) on d2l for you to read, that provide little to no clarification. Marking is extremely unfair, and has no method whatsoever. Avoid this class and especially this prof if possible.
Dr. Smith is one of the best professors I have had at UofC. She is a great listener, kind, and emphatic towards her students. She does an excellent job at teaching COMS 363 online with 200+ students per class. Navigating the course on D2L can be challenging but it is not due to the professor's incompetence but rather because of the online format.
Reads from the textbook as her "lectures". Often very incoherent in her explanations and often makes assignments unnecessarily long and difficult to understand. Avoid this prof at all costs.
Throughout my entire university career, Tania Smith is without a doubt the most utterly incompetent instructor I have ever had the misfortune of being taught by. Her "lectures" if you can even call them that consist of her rambling incoherent metaphors while reading directly from the textbook. No visual aids or notes are provided in the class.
Not sure how a communications prof could be such a bad communicator. She has extremely vague descriptions on her assignment outlines and fails to mention things she is looking for until after assignments are graded and you got a C. Lots of homework that is very pointless and doesn't aid in learning. Save yourself and avoid taking a class with her
Absolutely terrible at clearly stating assignment instructions. No In class visual resources, inconsistent marking, and spends the class struggling to describe her own concepts
Not sure if these reviews are even about the same prof. I'll admit, I had reservations taking this class because of them but Dr. Smith is one of the kindest professors I've had the pleasure of learning from. She's incredibly intelligent and expects a lot--this is because she's passionate and wants her students to do well.
Honestly just terrible, not much else to say
Gives no constructive feedback on essays or assignments just the rubric which was not helpful. Lectures are her reading out of textbook and once presentations started sometimes wasn't even that. 10/10 would not recommend
Dr. Smith is absolutely insane, but also extremely sweet. Her textbooks are the only thing to actually learn rhetoric from. Her lectures are mostly incoherent rambling about the thyroid and just okay memes. Her organization is subpar, as she uses a horrible system to track deadlines that is confusing. If she likes you, the class is very easy.
Unfortunate that this course is required by the university. Without a doubt this was my least favourite course in my entire undergrad. Dr. Smith is unable to communicate effectively and lacks any kind of self-awareness. I would not recommend this professor to anyone.
Dr. Smith is very clear about what she expects and grades based on in her syllabus. I found the work to be challenging and assignments gave ample opportunity to put these skills to use and improve upon them. I always appreciated the feedback I received. If you're not willing to participate or do the work, you won't do well.
Dr. Smith was the weirdest prof I've ever had. Her assignments were way too detailed that the details confuse you. she never gave us slides or notes to write off. It's effortless to tune her out because she goes on random tangents. Dr. Smith expects way too much and has weird grading criteria. If you can dodge her, do it. not the best prof
Grading criteria is clear but OVERLY meticulous! I.e. 10 pages of assignment INSTRUCTIONS longer than your assignment itself. She will spot the tiniest of errors that most instructors would ignore. Very old-fashioned in terms of running the class. Textbook is used sparingly, lectures are just talking and tangential. Course schedule is terrible.
Dr. Smith has the right intentions as a teacher however her methods for lecturing and overall communication with the class is poor. Many times she would read straight out of the textbook and the assignment instructions provided are huge and not very beneficial. Most of the content in this class is redundant, and the final exam was all T/F.
Dr Smith is a really nice lady & was VERY helpful to me while I was away for sport for 6 weeks. She's a very understanding prof & provides lots of ways to boost ur grade. She doesn't provide notes & her lectures are based off of her handouts. Not a tough grader + assignments were quite laid back, just go to class& do what she says & you'll do well
Tania Smith has good intentions, but her lecture and teaching style is super confusing. I never thought having too much instruction would be an issue, but there would be 10+ pages of instruction for a super small assignment. It was overwhelming. I relied on others in the class to help to make sure we were on same page.
Has a weird, bizarre style of lecturing. Still unclear what I was even supposed to learn from this class.
Dr. Smith is probably the worst lecturer I've ever had. For a class that focuses on rhetorical communication and the importance of visuals and engaging content, it's confusing that Smith spends most of her classes reading off plain word documents. Assignments aren't hard but the instructions are often longer than the assignment itself. Weird class!
I will start off by saying Smith definitely cares about her students. Unfortunately, the way in which this class is set up is a bit different and thus a little challenging. Beware of the tests and their format, they are set up to have the possibility of multiple right answers but you won't know. It is just a lot more work but she herself is nice.
This class is very work heavy, and if you take a full course load or have a life, simply run. Non-stop assignments, you have to peer review everything, which adds more due dates, and the assignment instructions are 10 pages and like 5000 words. Very stressful.
Dr. Smith is a nice person. However, her teaching style isn't that great. Like many of the previous reviews, her assignment instructions are pretty much longer than the assignment itself, thus making the assignment seem more difficult than it really is. Grading wise, she is very nit picky and quite biased.
Dr. Smith made the material hard to understand. She didn't cover assignment-relevant concepts until right before the due date. Assignment instructions were very long. Grading criteria were unclear, very minimal feedback given, and she docks your assignment grade up to 10% for changing a presentation date you selected at the start of the semester.
Get ready to get lost in her assignment direction, up to 10 pages long for a simple 200 word reading discussion. Doesn't understand how to teach in the 21st century and spends half the class talking about her thyroid disease.
worst professor ever. if you can avoid her, do it.
Assignment instructions are so ambiguous despite being 10+ pages in length. Clarifications about the assignment are emailed out less than 1 week before the due date since every student emails for clarification. The class is way more confusing and challenging than it should be.
Tania's class has a confusing setup, with lengthy assignment instructions that make the work seem harder than it is. Utilize Unstuck AI and other study aids to stay on top of the material. Despite the challenges, the professor is caring and the content is interesting.
AVOID this prof is you can, nothing else to say.. She is a nice person BUT her teaching and instruction is just not IT instructions are like 10+ pages long for a 5% small assignment
