Best philosophy teacher ever. Although she's only a part-time professor she makes explanations clear and helps you every step of the way. She's hilarious and makes lectures fun and interesting. She makes you feel confident and comfortable when giving answers infront of the class. Makes philosophy seem easy and fun. Must take class, she's awesome.
Excellent prof!! I first dreaded philo, but with her, all my anxiety melted away! Super supportive and funny, she really knows how to teach philo! If you pay attention, read and do some exercises, it's easy to pass with a good grade. If you're struggling with something, she'll help you until it's crystal clear! It's simple: LISTEN IN CLASS.
I had a hard time understanding some of the stuff she talked about during lectures, but if you ask her for your help, she's going to help you for sure.
Great teacher. Her positive attitude is contagious and she makes speaking up in class feel comfortable. Also, she's readily available for help and she won't let you go until you fully understand the matter or that you have to get to your next class. So yeah, she's awesome. I'd take this course again.
She's one of the best teachers I had yet!
3 mid term exams, first two worth 20%, third worth 10 or 20% depending how good you do (that one was really easy). Second midterm was a lot more difficult as the first, basically the only thing that I can possibly complain about this class. Everything else was basically perfect, great professor, really friendly person, appreciated this class.
I did not find the class that interesting because philosophy was a mandatory class but as far as teachers go she was the best! Her classes were clear and she gives a ton of examples!!! The textbook is clear and is mostly there to help you practice. If you show up to class and follow all her advice you will have no problem doing great!
A great lecturer who made it a very relevant, interesting course no matter what faculty one is studying. Able to make real connections to our lives. Not to be missed a fun, thought provoking course.
She is Awesome! I had Tansy as a tutor in SMD. She was willing to listen and to try to understand my way of learning to adjust her way of teaching. She is understanding and just beautiful. :) I love her!
Amazing prof and person! I was putting off the class, but she made it enjoyable! She's so there for you and LOVES to help/answer questions. Tests are mostly based off readings (no text), but definitely go to class because she adds in info you need/changes schedule of things. She's the prof to take for philosophy you won't regret it. She's awesome.
I'm the only one out of all my friends that can say that I had an amazing PHI1501 prof. She makes you understand the information all while being fun. Tansy is determined to make her students succeed and knows how to get the attention of 200 people. I would totally retake her class for fun.
Prof Tansy was the best prof I've ever had! She's so inspirational and her teaching methods are amazing. I found the content difficult, but just listening to her lectures made me understand it so well. I never once dreaded going to class, I actually looked forward to it and I usually hate philosophy. She's so kind, helpful, and caring! Best ever.
The prof is awesome. Funny in a quirky way . No mid - term but quizzes. The quizzes weren't bad if you studied, listened in class, and paid attention during the review classes. If you don't understand in class GO TO OFFICE HOURS it helps. I hate philosophy and I still got an A+ in the course. No textbook, everything is on the library.
Hilarious, caring, will spend hours with you outside of class to help you if necessary. She's fair and really opened.
I'm not sure how I feel about Tansy Etro-Beko. You go to class and think you understand everything, go home do all the homework and get it right... however you don't do well on the exam? She is always available during her office hours and she does want to help but sometimes she's rude which makes you not want to go see her again.
Absolutely amazing. Gives great explanation.
This lecture tends to be a little confusing at times. It was an okay class, and Tansy was helpful for the most part. However, I found she got impatient and very rude at times, which was discouraging. Second midterm is definitely the heaviest and hardest. Must study.
You think that you did well on your exams until you get your grades back. She yells at you for "not having studied" despite all the effort you put into it. Will spend 30 minutes on 1 single slide. Kind of savage when unnecessary. Has her funny moments and is passionate about the material.
Extremely frustrating as a professor, skipped classes because I couldn't stand her. Spends 80min before midterms answering questions and then talks loudly all throughout the test so you can't concentrate. Also very rude to students and unable to control her classroom. Easy enough grader but not worth the frustration if you actually do your work.
Tansy can be quite rude. It was especially frustrating when she would berate our class during the middle of the writing a midterm. The content is difficult, and sometimes ambiguous. Prepare to examine many Powerpoints... but she will help you if you ask.
Dr Tanzy is soo loving, she was giving hugs and handshakes to all her students during the final exam. Although this course was tough, she was always willing to help you during her office hours, adding hours and making sure you left her office understanding the lesson.
Managed to make a very dry topic interesting. Took her time to make sure everyone was following and answered lots of questions. Gave the entire class a make-up test after one of our midterms didn't go very well.
One of the most caring professors, really tries her best to help students learn through office hours, and even had a makeup midterm when it didn't go well. This class can be tough if you dont put in effort, but as long as you do the readings, attend lectures and ask questions/office hours you should be good!! Her lectures are also interesting!
literally one of the most caring profs out there! She's so like chill and cool which makes her lectures very captivating. She understands our busy lives which is why she does everything in her power to help us. The class content is very interesting also!
Dr. Etro-Beko was a very vivacious woman who really wants her students to succeed. She assigns a lot of readings but only tests you on stuff that were mentioned in the lecture. She is so nice and caring and respects her students and is able to dumb-down the most complicated concepts such that literally anyone can understand them.
I love her. If you have the choice between two teachers, you should choose her ! She is dedicated to her students. She wants them to succeed & would do anything for them. Lovely personality. Always laughing & transparent. I'd take an another class with her if I could !
She is SUCH A GOOD PROF!!! I LITERALLY want to take philosophy again next year just to have her again. 10/10 !! Best philosophy prof everrr
I absolutely hated philosophy before I had her as my prof. She's the nicest most funniest and most caring/loving prof you'll probs ever have in uni. Most profs don't care about their students but she is the complete opposite. If you have any questions she will answer them. She also makes class very fun and will do anything to help you. Recommend!!!
Idk what to say other than she's wonderful and goes out of her way to make sure students understand what's being taught. If you're looking for a philosophy elective like I was and see her name on a class, you know what class to sign up for.
BEST prof I've ever had. So caring, really wants you to pass. Adds LOTS of extra office hours for anyone who needs help. She's super encouraging and WANTS you to ask as many questions as you need. Gives enough time for tests and almost a month for the exam. Very real and understanding that philo isn't for everyone. She clearly loves what she does.
Took class online during COVID, she's so animated and friendly!
Dr. Beko was an amazing prof! There were a lot of readings but her lectures really helped with understanding them. She gave great feedback on exams and advice on how to do better on the next ones.
took this class online during COVID and she keeps lectures fun and interesting and she genuinely cares about her student. super easy to access outside of class and her explanations of course material were really thorough. literal queen, you just gotta love her!
Amazing prof and very caring person who really wants you to succeed. As long as you keep up with the readings you're set to do well in this course.
The bubbliest professor I will ever know. The only reason I wouldn't take this course again is because I found the content a little boring tbh. Her notes on them can be a little confusing so make. your. own. notes. This course could use a little more visual learning (documentaries, movies, etc), but Dr. Tansy is by far the nicest prof ever!
10/10 love this prof, Dr. Etro-Beko is the sweetest. Took a lot of class time to answer questions which can be good or bad depending if the questions being asked were helpful or not. If you did the readings and understood them (going to class to ask questions if needed) then you could get a really good grade. Exams were straight forward.
she's a great and friendly prof but you could literally write and work on your responses to the questions on the exam SO HARD and you might still not get the full grade. the feedback is vague and not too helpful either and are judged subjectively.
No new material learned between midterm 3 and final and even if you did well on the midterms be careful. Super hard marker on the final and asks for one thing but marking scheme wants something else. Had to appeal for 0.1% from the FACULTY because doesn't email back. Definitely overrated by students. Avoid this prof if you can.
Dr. Etro-Beko is a highly organized professors. Her lectures are very clear and easy to understand. Make sure you attend all of her lectures and do the readings and you will do great in the class. She was always giving us studying tips and she was accessible outside class time for office hours! Overall she is a very sweet and caring professor!
You can tell she loves what she teaches and cares about you personal development. She is SUPER accessible outside of class. That being said, her class seemed to be much harder than other profs teaching the same course and when you asked for help she seemed to get flustered and she wouldn't adjust her teaching style at all when it wasn't working.
She is the best prof i have ever had. In every way, shape, or forme, she is fantastic. She is great as both a prof and a human. She listens to her students and is very accommodating. She is truly amazing. Even is you hate philosophy, take her class, youll love it.
Made the class very interesting and was always easy to follow. Obviously tried her best to make sure the class was doing well. Some professors go at their own pace and expect the students to follow along, but this professor really makes sure all students are keeping up and goes at a pace that she knows the students can follow. Amazing prof 10/10
Best prof for online classes. Just take her class, you can thank me later.
She is a great prof! She is very humorous person and very patience with answering questions in lec. Her lecture is very easy to understand. And she gave student chance to redo the quiz if they have a bad score.
very sweet prof but her class was tough and other profs seemed better at teaching this course. she thought a low class average was good for first year students. gets flustered easily and wasnt organized, didnt like her teaching style or set up. all tests no assignments & test questions were harder than practice questions, often had bonus mark tests
Dr. Tansy Etro-Beko was all over the place. The exams were much more difficult than the course content. Your entire grade was based on a few exams, and several re-do questions. At one point the class average was in the mid 50s. Unnecessarily difficult for a first year intro class.
This teacher is unprofessional, refers to students as "her kids". During class she had a 20 minute bout of wailing, crying and telling us how much she loved us and wanted us all to get a good grade. She didn't stop until a student stepped in and told her to stop the class. She never apologized or acknowledged the outburst in later classes.
Prof Tansy is a chill professor and I enjoy her lectures but her tests are traps. Shes very nitpicky, even though you may have the correct answer if you dont hit every minor detail (which she doesnt specify in lectures) be prepared to receive grades such as 0.25/1. Dont be deceived by her easy lectures, class averages are usually in the 50s.
Prof. Tansy Etro Beko is a lot of fun and her lectures are always engaging. She is always focused on making sure that you understand concepts and she's very clear about what will be tested. As long as you do the readings (which is not a lot) and attend class you will do well.
tests are hard, go to office hours
The best prof Ive ever had. She makes me actually like philosophy :)
This prof will give her all. Every class to you, She will give great examples and is open to discussion. The test aren't long and she's straight up with her expectations. The classes online are recorded. She energetic and deserves the best. I highly reccomend you take this prof. She is a real gem and will treat you well.
She really cared for her students and always made sure we understood everything. She teaches the class very well. She knows her stuff and explains it in an accessible way so that everyone can understand. Loved her class.
If youre scared of philo take this prof!!!!! I had Nouredine M. twice and it was so hard but with this prof everything is so easy to understand! She gives actual explanation and examples we can truly understand. I took pleasure listening to her lectures and most of all she will always be there to help. SHES THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have one lecture left with the prof before the semester is done, but i wish i could take her for another sem. anywho, she is amazing, teaches with passion. she is really funny as well. I would take her again and recommend her if you wanna pass any class. God bless her
A very passionate teacher, we need more of those ! absolutely reccomend. Will make you love philosophy
Professor Tansy is by far my favourite professor Ive had as a first year student. She encourages you to ask questions and responds with zero judgment. She super passionate about what she teaches and explains super clearly.
Offers nothing but links to what she wants you to read on her brightspace page... That's it! Her lectures are also all over the place and do not have any visual accompaniment. Only doing well because of a groupchat that the students of this class created to help eachother out.
Never had someone so invested in teaching and so passionate about their work teach me before. Changed the way I look at philosophy. I would recommend taking any class taught by this prof. My favourite so far! :)
Def recommend this prof for the mandatory PHI1101 class for many programs. She is super nice and likes to interact with her students (even during online lectures). There are some tests but as long as you pay attention during lectures, you shouldn't have to study much.
Awesome prof! Takes the time to explain things when someone doesnt understand it, even with it being an online class. Definitely a great professor I am surprised shes only part time
Tansy is literally the funniest prof ever. A true queen. Philosophy is pretty hard but she teaches it very well.
Great personality and very entertaining lectures! Offers plenty of opportunity to explain your answers and has no problem re-explaining difficult concepts. Pay attention to details and you should do well. Only problem is that she can be hard to follow as she hops around between concepts often.
Tansy is the sweetest prof. I couldn't care less about philosophy, but she made the class fun and engaging. She is always willing to take the time to go over anything that's confusing, and never makes students feel bad about asking simple questions.
I don't know what to say besides she really cares about her students and their success. The class content was tough and she explained it very well in different ways for different students. warning though, if you don't go to class you wont understand most of the content. She is super funny and very understanding, would recommend!
She was really nice and very inclusive/progressive (in terms of gender and pronouns) if anyone was concerned about that. Other than that she was super accomodating and loved when we asked questions. Be sure to watch as many lectures as you can because it really helps (and show your work as much as you can in the tests and exams!!).
Dr. Etro-Beko is an absolute gem. She will make you laugh and that is a guarantee. The course was very difficult and very frustrating at times, but Dr. Etro-Beko really made me enjoy the class. She also took great advantage of online classes, making herself available all the time for office hours. She's absolutely fantastic and really cares.
her energy is awesome and she makes you wanna actually study. her classes are so fun and she actually cares about her students. very open minded and very cool. content is a little bit heavy so attendance is strongly suggested because even when attended, i had to watch the recordings of the classes a couple of times before the quizzes.
Honestly such a great prof. Her lectures could be enough to pass the class but if you want a good grade, youll need to go to office hours (even if you don't have questions cause she hints possible exam questions). Beside that she is fun to talk to and genuinely wants you to do well in class!
She's a wonderful, sweet, and funny prof for this class. She does her best to make sure you understand the topic and explains things thoroughly. She only had lectures so she specifically said no need to buy a textbook (aware we don't have funds during covid), but she had great recommendations for books if you were interested in the topic. 10/10!!
May seem eccentric and funny at first but that quickly turns into disorganization and irritability. Doesn't give decent slides or notes so make sure to go to lectures and record your own. Office hours are pretty much necessary for success. She made the course harder than necessary. Take this class with literally anyone else and save your energy.
Love this prof. Very friendly, funny, and kind. She cares about your understanding of material & stress levels. She will practice with you as much as you need. Very organized, clear about expectations, takes up assessments in class and helps make complicated concepts very simple. Open book tests were great. Definitely recommend her as a prof.
Dr. Etro-Beko is such a great prof! She clearly cares about her students and their success. She's engaging in her lectures and always makes sure we understand before moving on! Her tests are very fair and she always takes them up in class to make sure everyone understands what she was looking for. Will definitely be looking to take her class again!
Really capable, and it's clear that she cares about her students and their success. You'll struggle if you don't attend the lectures which can sometimes be hard to follow, but overall she's a great prof.
A real gem. Her personality is wonderful; it motivated me to attend her classes. She keeps her lectures fun and interesting, even if the topic may seem bland. Classes are recorded. No homework only non graded practice problems. Don't have to buy the textbook and she posts pictures of the practice problems from the textbook. 4 quizzes + final exam
I take philosophy classes because the arguments make sense, its straightforward. This woman. Makes. No. Sense. I try, I try so hard to understand. She makes you read the text, and assumes you understand it. In her lectures I have no clue how anything connects together, its all over the place. Ive cried watching the past 5 lectures. do not take her.
So confusing. I understand it's philosophy, but she is really all over the place and I am so so so confused. The lectures are all over the place, and some of the lectures are impossibly confusing, especially for a second year class. Like the last person said, cried a lot during her lectures cause I'm so confused. And the grading and long exams
she's nice but exams are hard, too long, expects us to basically copy paste from readings. it's open book, but seems like we need to meet every detail in the text, even if we understand the general idea and add details, 50%. she started explaining clearly only after a bad review. to be clear, my current mark is over a pass, this is about teaching.
A lot of students are confused, but if u actually come to class, read the texts and ask questions about things you don't understand, you'll have everything in your hands to have good grades. She cares so much for her students, she is bubbly and passionate about her job and she will make every classes so much more interesting. Will take again! :)
I have struggled a bit, but I've been able to adapt to how she teaches and I find that she's very willing to help. She engages a lot with the class and is such a warm person. I have my challenges, but I think I'm learning a lot and I feel like I can put in the work to do a good job! I think she's also a really fair marker/grader.
Dr. Tansy is an extremely passionate teacher. An animated and excited professor, Dr. Tansy supplements interesting and helpful personal real world examples that help illustrate topics. I would not say that this is a particularly easy class, but Dr. Tansy really works at making sure everyone does the best they can. Her passion inspires you to try.
Professor Tansy is by far the best professor Ive had at the University of Ottawa. The genuine care and dedication she has for her students is unmatched. Her incredible passion for philosophy is reflected in her teaching. Lectures are engaging and easy to follow, not to mention she is hilarious. I would absolutely recommend her classes to anyone.
Had professor Tansy for Arabic Philosophy and Ive learnt a lot. Material is engaging! A solid professor who cares abt her students & their academic success. This is a uni class. you absolutely need to study and thoroughly understand the material. However her exams are fair and she goes the extra mile in her office hours. Go see her, shes cool!
Professor Etro-Beko is really passionate about philosophy. Highly recommend doing the readings before the lecture, since the lecture will clarify things in the reading (if it doesn't, ask questions and she will happily answer + ensure you understand it by the end.) Very accomadating and available outside of class, genuinely wants you to succeed
Professor Tansy cares about her students and wants them to succeed. You have to do the readings before class to understand/follow the discussion, but if you ask questions she'll explain the concepts multiple ways until you understand it. She's available outside class for help as well and as a philosophy elective, this is a great course to take!
I take 4 year 3 phi courses by profs who presumably are tougher graders. She seems like she tries to be sweet but its not her nature. She words her midterms so much harder than they need to be. It's a clear attempt to confuse and not an attempt to to actually get us to answer the questions the way we understand from her lectures. Not an educator.
Rambles for 20 mins and says, "do you get what I'm saying" or "do you understand." If you are constantly asking if your group gets what you're saying, there's a problem. Worse of all, she constantly engages in identity politics when all I wanted to learn was Nietzsche. This is why universities are dying.
I studied so much for the exam, if you ask me what I learned in this class Ill tell you- a lot. HOWEVER. the final was so long I left half the answers blank and wasnt able to focus on writing the answers I did have time to do. And I shouldnt have lost marks on half the things I did. I did everything right, but my grade doesnt reflect that :(
Literally have no idea what these horrible reviews are saying... had her in person and she was INCREDIBLE!!!!! You do have to do the readings but if you have literally ANY questions she clarifies them in such a succinct and easy to understand manner. Hoping I can get more classes with her! If you try, she notices, and your grades notice too ;)
One of my favorite profs, she really tries to get students engaged and talking which makes lectures much better. Could be intimidating if you're not expecting that engagement but it's so worth it. She really wants students to succeed and she's super helpful in office hours. The course content is very focused and challenging in a good way.
the sweetest and most understanding prof i have ever had. but with that being said, I was not expecting her to be such a hard marker for a second year course. I ended up doing fine, but wouldn't have been surprised if i ended up with a lower grade, as a lot of the class (me included) felt that this was much harder than other comparable PHI classes
the material felt clear but you get to the exam & it's so long in such a short time that even if managed you'll always have marks deducted for no reason. And I have yet to get my grades back but I'm sure it is worse than my science classes which is absrud. grading always takes lots of time, and horrid marking wish I got into the other phi section.
Even though this class was online it was my fav class! She is so kind, funny, and keeps it real. Her lectures are really engaging and she cares a lot about her students. She gave us extra (optional) questions to raise our marks and she gave us an extra 1%. Her exams are difficult, but if you attend every class and take good notes, you'll be fine!
She is the most caring. Her teaching though?... I'd read twice like she said, study a lot and still get 40-60% on the tests. The class average went to 40-50%. Is it the students' fault? Well, the average stayed the same after another test and everyone complained about the way the test questions were written. The prof should reconsider her approach.
Logics class was great, super hard if you don't study but if you do enough exercices to understand then you're good. There were many time where even though I did all the exercices from the book, I didn't really understand so I had to see her outside of class (we spent many hours together xD). She genuinely wants her students to succeed.
Professor Tansy Etro-Beko is the best teacher I ever had in my first year. Her exams are fair. She is very involved and professional. She really cares about her students. her texts were so captivating. she literally teaches you to love other people no matter who they are. I hope to have another class with her.
This professor is amazing. Her lectures are captivating and incredibly informative - a professor like you have never had before; I can guarantee you will never be bored in her class. Exams are very fair and by reading the textbook and attending most of her classes, you will have no problem succeeding in her class! Inspiring and transformative :)
I had the pleasure of taking a course with Professor Tansy Etro-beko and I must say, she is an amazing professor! She explains material very well and her discussions in class are always interesting and engaging. You can tell that she truly wants her students to succeed and is willing to go above and beyond to help them achieve their goals.
She is very caring and made her lectures entertaining
I hated the way she presented material in class. I had to teach myself every single concept because she does not teach, rather goes over examples from the textbook without context all class. Extremely confusing and frustrating. Professor Tansy is very charismatic and funny, though.
Not my favourite class...at all. I was told it was supposed to be easy and other philosophy classes were great but this teacher confused me. She rambles about things and explains to a point where she completely loses you. I thought I understood something and then got confused again because she was not concise and clear in her teaching.
The teacher is very competent and passionate about what she teaches, and she always wants the best for her students and for them to succeed. If you attend class and do the practice questions from the textbook or her slides, you will do well. If you don't understand something, she'll help you, either in class or office hours. I highly recommend her
3 midterms 20% each,1 cumulative final 40%, all in class, no mc, short answ. You can never skip class, you'll miss crucial info, she does differently than the book and powerpoints aren't enough. She was fine, i know she is caring but she's a bit impulsive? Fight for your grades, TA's correction sucks, she recorrects generously. Listen and it's easy
Professor Tansy was amazing. Lectures were great, she takes questions seriously so everyone understands. Lectures can be watched online if you can't make it in person, though I strongly suggest attending her lectures. Exams are super easy if you read the corresponding chapter and review slides. Very fair grader and accessible for reviewing grades.
such a sweet and caring prof, will give make ups for quizzes if people don't do good, will make friendly small talk while you're handing your papers to make you feel better, also records lectures and uploads them. the class may look intimidating (logic symbols, etc.) but is actually easy and honestly what more could you ask of the prof
Tansy is a sweet and caring professor. Lectures are engaging, and she's happy to help if you're struggling. Use Unstuckstudy and the textbook - it's key to doing well in this 'easy' but tricky class.
