She keeps the class interesting and therefore the students are more motivated
Awesome!Classes are fun, hard marker but tells you exactly what she wants what s

Nice teacher,,,,,but hard marker
Extremely boring class...she has a lousy selection of books, and takes way too long to discuss them. Two weeks per book is too much!!
Tanya's a great teacher who knows the material inside and out. *Very* demanding marker. Use her office time, she loves to help. Did I say she's a hard marker yet?
Hard marker, but all Eng instr are hard. Tanya gives clear instructions & expectations. Effort is required.Little effort=low mark. Tells what is on quizzes. Pick own research topic-not stuck with literary research! ESL beware-unforgiving of ESL errors.
Great teacher, extremely hard marker. 10% on class participation so an easy 10 if you read the assigned work and be involved. Always plenty of office hours to discuss projects.
She is an extremely hard marker...gives out F's like there is no tomorrow. Essay topics are completely redundant, and it does not help with ther high expectations. Unless you like English, and enjoy a mediocre sense of humour, I would not recommend her!
Really hard marker, lots of boring class discussions, dont recommend her at all
Tanya is an excellent instructor. Classes are enjoyable, imagine that! She is strict, but treats students with respect and obviously loves her job. Would like to see her teach more higher level clasess.
She tells you exactly what she wants so-just do it! Suggestion: visit her during office hours before handing in a paper; she is a big help and will give you great advice! Tries to make it a fun class...you seriously get out of it what you put into it!
She is very hard marker. Since English is my second language, I have very tough time with her. However, she is very helpful. She gives us back our papers very quickly. All in all, she loves what she does. I enjoyed her class.
tanya is a great teacher, she loves what she does and it shows, shes a hard marker indeed, but shes fair. she gives the mark you deserve not the mark you may want, i really enjoyed taking her class and would love to take her again
She is very hard at marking and no lenency. NIce adn understanding until it comes to marks. Dull and dry. Don't screw up your works cited or you fail the course
Pros: kind, helpful, clear & quite strict. She explains what you should do clearly & you'll get good mark if you follow everything on her guidelines. Cons: hard marker...
ESL killer.
She's the worst English teacher ever. Her classroom is like a day-care center and she tells you fairy stories instead of short stories. It's like just escaping from high schools and then, being trapped by a baby-sitter.
Took her last summer. I just got complimented on a letter I wrote to my boss. This class has given me real workplace skills. Who would have thought uni. English would be so beneficial? I doubted at the time, but just wait and see...
very nice, very helpful, BUT DON'T take english with her if you're ESL student
What can I say? hard, and very...subjective. NO EXTENSION possible; hate people for being late. The worst part is: she has her own ideas and thoughts on everything, and hard to accept different ones. fair marker, but I don't understand her teaching we
Very fun and funny teacher if you come ready to put in the necessary effort. If not, I would not recommend the class. Hard but constructive marker. You will learn a lot in this class if you want to.
Don't take her, If you want to fail, take her, 2 out of 20 to pass in her class. Although she smile , she fails you without explanation. she likes people to repeat again, she said people take 8 times in 1107 is a common thing!!
She's a nice teacher. Her lectures are clear but she is a hard marker. I don't think her her course is helpful but if you do what she asks, you can pass the course easily.
she is a super tough marker... my suggession is, if you are esl students, don't ever take her course. you will DEFINATELY fail..
It is rather interesting to see how many ESL students complain about her marking; indeed, she is a very tough marker. However, does this toughness help one learn more English? No! It only discourages the student.
She is the toughest marker I've ever had... Never take her she sucks !!!!
She is the hardest marker i've ever seen in my life... She gives out a lot of F's she doesnt care.... if yr grammer is some what wrong she will deduct a lot of marks and probably will give the paper a C. If u wanna fail take this teacher.
She's a difficult marker, but offers all her extra time around due dates. She's willing to help with papers and exams and her lectures are interesting. If you put in the effort, you can do really well in her class and learn a lot.

her class wut okai, but i did not expect the marks i received from essays. She's nice, but she's a hard marker.
She's a great teacher, probably the best English teacher at Langara. She knows her stuff, and is willing to help. Although she is tough, she is fair too. If you want to really improve your English and take the challenge, she is a good choice.
She is so bad! Take her if you want fail!
I learned something from this course only because I saw her once outside of class. Nice enough but BORING lectures. I guess I respect her marking but if you want a good grade best to steer clear or spend lots of time sucking up during office hours.
IF YOU WANT TO FAIL THE COURSE, SHE IS A PROMISING CHOICE. SHE GIVES OUT F'S LIKE ITS HER JOB. STEER CLEAR OF HER.
uh, it IS her job to grade you. I'm not surprised you got an F.
If you are an A student, you will probably end up with a B-. The lectures are a waste of time.
Don't take her if u want to pass! Good personality but hard marker!
YOU WANNA FAIL THE COURSE? TANYA LEWIS MAKES IT ALL POSSIBLE

borrring as hell!!! if u want to fail TAKE her class. be happy if u get a C-:(
I would have to disagree greatly with the previous posts,at least for eng 1121. Tanya is an awsome teacher, she cares about her students, and successfully makes class interesting in the morning. I didn't miss a class cause it was fun. These previous posts don't do her justice. TAKE HER CLASS!!

The ABSOLUTE WORST INSTRUCTOR. She is the pickiest marker I've ever had as she hands out F's like there's no tomorrow. I don't know what else to say...I HATE HER w/ A PASSION!!!

Terribly Horrible.
when i saw her i knew i was getting an F ,no more than 7 mistakes in an essay or else u repeat the whole semester!!!
bad bad bad
if u like ti stay longer in langara, take her class..sure u have to repeat this course

Tanya, (Taunya) is the best English teacher I have ever had. She inspires me to continue taking one of my least favorite subjects. EVERYONE should have Tanya as their teacher. She is clear, concise, and one of the most caring instructors at Langara. Don't expect a free ride, however, expect the best English instruction there is as Langara.
Ok kids, time to wake up and realize that English isn't easy!Especially if it is your second language. Tanya prepared me for the grizzly world beyond first year English! Many of you can't even write concise ratings! No wonder you failed her class! Very approachable...use her willingness to help you one on one.
Hmm. It's interesting that so many of you who complain can't write a correct sentence. If you did badly in the course, you probably deserved your mark. It's the instructor's job to mark fairly, not generously. Grow up, people.
Tanya is a great teacher! She's fun and energetic, and she's always available to help anyone who's having problems in her class. She even did a make-up exam for people who didn't do well on the first try. She's a really great teacher, and she always makes the class fun.
she should be teaching high school - elementary school even.
Great teaching approach! She is more your friend then a teacher. I have never enjoyed Eng as much as I do now. She is awesome.
She needs to find a man and stop talking about chocolate in every class.
She's fair, and for that she deserves respect. She's perky, fun and tries her best to make class interesting. She understands we don't care about grammar...but someone has to teach it, and I think she does a great job!
Getting bored all the time...some materials useful for international students.
avoid her
Very Hard
I'm very glad I had Tanya for my first year english classes at Lanagara. She gave me tools to be a stronger writer in all of my classes, but she never gave me an A.
Tanya is an enthusiastic teacher who enjoys her job. She is a fiar but hard marker, and she demands alot out of her students, but she also offers help for those who want it. If you want a greater understanding of English Literature, any of her classes will be an excellent choice, just be prepared to work hard.
She's the kind of teacher that makes you want to learn more. Tanya is very enthusiastic about English and draws the same enthusiasm from her students. Her teaching is not tedious or boring, and she is always willing to help her students.
awesome prof! she's funny and quite entertaining. makes attending class a pleasure. very helpful. quizzes are difficult if you don't read the book...don't watch the movies...! make sure your essays are structured. start your essays w/ an outline.
Tanya's enthusiam really comes through. She is passionate about the subject and funny which makes it engaging for students. Go TL!
Tanya has a great teaching style! She is very engaging and entertaining in class. However, take heed--she is an EXTREMELY difficult marker. Do not expect to get a good grade without putting in ALOT of effort, she told our class on the first day that she rarely gives out As and that a B for her class is an excellent mark.
I hate this teacher.Iif you can choose, don't choose her. She is not responsible, if you have question, she will ask you to leave instead of bothering her. No way to choose her, very bad
Tanya's great! She's helpful, considerate & tries to be as clear as possible. Her enthusiasm for English is evident & makes the class more fun. She tries to cater to varyious learning styles which can take you out of your comfort zone, but overall really helps to reinforce the course material. I highly recommend her, especially for 2nd year engl.
The group discussions were an irritating waste of time. The essay's not too bad but the exams and quizzes are tough, as she seems to expect you to know things inside and out. The only truly fun part was the Shakespeare skits. Don't take her class if you don't TRULY LOVE literature with a passion, or you will regret it when all is said and done.
She's really nice, funny, extremely approachable, and quite helpful during office hours. I hate english, but i found her class interesting and entertaining. I especially liked that she doesn't pick on people for answers in class...I usually get B's in English, and thats what i got from her. So i guess she's a fair marker..I definitely recommend her
Tanya Lewis is an amazing professor. She really knows her stuff! I loved her methods of teaching - she's so enthusiastic about English, it's contagious!
A spirited and friendly teacher. A problem I had with her methods is that she does not encourage creative and individual thought if it goes against her own beliefs.
She's really nice and extremely helpful. I found her to be very fair in her marking but she does not hand out A's just like that so if you are looking for easy marks you should probably not take her. Also don't take Neg 2223 with her unless you are really interested in literature. Be prepared to participate and do some acting in this class.
awesome prof!! i had been worried for this class, even though i'm an low A/high B student in english, but chaucer, shakespeare, milton were things i hadn't been looking forwards to. she makes it easy to understand, and enjoyable! a fair marker, she isn't an easy marker, but very few english profs are. is very willing to help her students!
Tanya was a passionate and understanding prof. I found that she loved the material, and was more than willing to give help if you asked for it. Tough, but fair marker, so you really will get the mark you deserve in this class. Recommended.
Tanya is passionate about english. A's do not come easily (or at all) in her class but it is worth it. Interactive and entertaining lectures, tough but fair marker.
THE WORST TEACHER EVER, if one even considers her as one. Her classes are extremely easy, no content. If you want to do well, make sure you either suck up to her or blend into the walls. Always arrive early, don't ever miss class or be late b/c you'll be guaranteed a FAIL. She plays favorites, and once you're on her "not" list...you're doomed!
nice helpful instructor, hard to get high mark
She is super approachable and if she sees the class bored, she will make jokes just to cheer everyone up! She's such a sweet teacher and always enjoy the material she is teaching! She is not an easy marker though, you do have to attend class and study!
I loved her class! She successfully kept me awake for her 8:30 class. You can tell she is very passionate about this subject which encourages you to try even harder. It's not an easy A class but she marks fair.
Great Teacher! Engaging and intelligent. Really enjoyed her class, it's evident she loves her job and loves english. Left her class feeling really inspired. She's a difficult marker but you learn a lot and if you're struggling she is very helpful. I highly recommend taking her class
Honestly one of my favourite teachers I have ever had. A REALLY hard marker - she will tear your paper apart in a matter of minutes - but if you take the time to talk it through with her, she will teach you to avoid your most prevalent mistakes. I left a much better writer. Demands excellence and clear logical arguments in papers. So approachable.
I went from A's and B's to F's and C's in her class. She is a very hard marker! Extremely hard marker. It seems like she's out to fail everyone. Most people in her class, including me got F's on everything. I try my best and get it proof read and edited and it's still never good enough for her! I do not recommend her for anyone trying to succeed
Tanya is AWESOME! Her classes are extremely interesting and fun. Her enthusiasm and passion for teaching literature are truly inspiring. She constantly makes you feel excited about the material you are learning. She is a tough marker, but really sweet, helpful and approachable. I would (and hopefully will) love to take another class with her :)
Tanya is an amazing teacher. She is helpful and approachable. A very hard marker but you become a better writer in the process. She is also fun and clear. Don't take her class if you are lazy.
Nice lady, who is VERY passionate about English literature. Seems to favour certain students, so don't get on her bad side. Her marking can frustrate you, but if you take the time to go over your writing with her, you may be able to improve your grade. Lots of reading, so don't fall behind.
She uses her own grading scheme and will change it at any time during the semester. She has criteria for her essay She may mark it or she may not - if you meet the requirements are not written on the outline. Confusing and frustrating.
Don't take her class if you need a good mark! She's a really hard marker. Approachable, but not very sympathetic. No matter how much work you put in your essays, she will crush your mark and not care about it. It's like she's setting people up to fail. She marks people like you're in a masters level for English. Avoid her at all cost!
She is a hard marker and if you want to fail and drop your GPA,I recommend you to take her class.
Great teacher! Enthusiastic and a great lecturer. Classes are always interesting and time flies. I will take more of her classes in the future.
She is an extremely hard marker. Her teaching will not help you improve your grade. If anything it improves your frustration. If you want to learn and improve GPA, DO NOT take her class
Take notes! If you regurgitate her opinion onto your essays, you will do well. She expects an incredibly high level of writing yet 1129 does not teach you writing skills but rather focuses on characterization setting and plot in novels. If you are not already good at writing don't take this class.
Passionate teacher. She has high standards which inspires you to work hard and not repeat previous mistakes. You get the mark you truly deserve with her; mind your manners.
Tanya throws a pretty interesting class. In terms of exams and papers she expects a high level of writing and rewards those who's ideas are in accordance with her own views and opinions. Don't leave your essay to the last minute and write about what she has discussed in class.
Lewis introduced me to some of my favourite poetry ever. She taught me the Shakespearen sonnet and turned me on to the dark and deliciously disturbing genius of Sylvia Plath. If it weren't for her, I wouldn't be able to recite the poem 'Daddy' by heart. One of my favourite professors.
Tanya is VERY particular about attendance. Specifically, she has a 4-absence policy: get 4 absences and she will kick you out of the class. More than 30 mins late for class? Absent. Literary discussion is a big part of 1129, and she ignores late students' suggestions even when they are the only ones answering her questions. Picks depressing novels.
She's a great teacher. I just found the topics we were told to write about were tough to get good points on. very enjoyable and a nice teacher who actually wants to teach.
This was my first college English course and she made it very enjoyable. She is very helpful and gives good feedback. She is a hard marker but if you follow what she says it isn't too bad. She focuses a lot on grammar but it is very useful.
First class in Langara - Lewis makes it very easy for you. She's very clear on her expectations for class and her lectures are informative also mixed with a bit of humour. She's very helpful and insists you go to her office hours if you need help. Although she's a tough grader, I would definitely take her class again in other English courses.
I thought Tanya would be a very fun and exciting teacher, but she is the complete opposite. Kind of disappointing.
Took her English Lit. survey class. Great lecturer, awesome lectures. Knows her stuff & passionate about her subject. BUT. Plays favourites & picks targets. You'll know which camp you're in by how much time she gives doesn't give you both in class and in private. ICE cold if you're on her hitlist; don't expect to pass w A's. if at all.
Very tough marker hard chance to pass
She Is a good teacher.
very enthusiastic about her lectures but not very helpful. gives very strict guidelines but does not explain them properly in lectures
Tanya is an extremely enthusiastic instructor whose passion for English literature is outwardly obvious. She made our 8:30 AM classes enjoyable; you can tell that she loves to teach. She scared me at first since many reviews say she is a very hard marker, but it's doable to get A's on the papers. It was a pleasure to have Tanya teach this course.
You will do well in this class and have a good time if you are already good at writing. However, if you are not, stay away from her. She will not help you. Her classes are not full for a reason.
I enjoyed Tanya's class, she made an 8:30am class enjoyable! She is a wonderful teacher who you can tell genuinely cares for her students and loves teaching. Overall I had a really good experience talking her class, I really enjoyed the literature we studied in ENGL1129. Tanya is a hard marker, I had to work super hard for my grade.
Tanya Lewis is amazing because she loves her job. She inspired me to improve my English skills. And yes, she is a tough marker, but how else do you want to succeed in this course?!
She uses every second of each class to teach you something you don't know or you are not sure about. I can't think of one second of her class that did not help me improve my english! She is very organized and I love it!.It makes you be more committed to what you are doing as a student too. She gives awesome feedbacks which is the best thing abt her
Tanyas great. Shes super nice and helpful. The reviews on here are harsh. Her class is a progressive one. If you visit her office hours, review the feedback shes given you and listen and attend lectures, youll do fine.
Tanya, is an amazing prof!! Yes she is a hard marker but honestly if you attend her lectures and take good notes you should be fine! She's very clear on what she wants from you and she legit marks you on that. USE HER OFFICE HOURS! she's so welcoming and such a sweet lady. She helps you so much during her office hours. I highly recommend her! 10/10
Tanya is a pretty enjoyable professor. She's willing to go out of her way to help you with issues you are encountering. I would 100% recommend going to see her at her office hours because then she can give feedback based on you. Overall, if you put in the effort, she will help you to figure things out.
Tanya is super passionate about english literature, knows her stuff and makes the 14th century literature we have to study fun to learn. She is a very fair marker, so long as you have insightful things to say and can back them up with the text. I was kinda scared to take this class, but Tanya keeps it chill. Take 2223 with Tanya!
Tanya is an amazing instructor! She is super passionate about literature, she can be a little bit of a hard marker but that's to be expected. A fast marker, you can literally expect to get your in-class back the next day. Take english with her, she's great.
Tanya is an excellent speaker and is very passionate about english literature. She can be on the harder side of marking, though she is fair so long as you have insightful things to say. I would honestly take another class with her, she's great.
Tanya cares about her students and is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about her subject matter. She is a tough marker, I think A's are hard to come by with her but has a nice quick turnaround for marking, and gives good feedback. She is very organized and sticks to the syllabus.
Is a good teacher, she has a simple way of teaching (but seems to deal with children sometimes). She doesn't attend after 5 minutes of class, and he does not even receive homework if he is late. There is a lot of content outside the class, which can be a bit boring and can leave the student overwhelmed. But overall it's worth doing the class with her
Highly recommended!
Excellent Professor! Although I haven't passed this course, I still really appreciate her lectures. She teaches passionately and can always engage me to participate in the class. By the way, she hates students missing her class without valid excuses, so try to avoid it. She won't give commentaries on your work if you missed too many classes.
she is the worst porfessor i had seen in my whole life. If she does bad to someone she should be ready to face it because karma is real. High in attitude and does not want to help you if you try to study on your own . I will never forget her for learning from such a bad professor.Worst Worst Worst
Tanya teaches how to analyze literature well. I learned a lot from her lectures; her advice is practical for English. I put "so many papers" as a tag, but that's honestly one of the great things about the course! She allows many chances to improve. I think she's given the most comprehensive feedback out of all the professors I've had.
dont reccomed her, she thinks you are still at secondary and is not clear in her feedbacks
Cares too much about attendance. any missed class without a email will call you out. shes still living the highschool life and calls out students for checking their phones. no device rule even though most students take notes on a device. very aggressive crazy how she treats adults like children. take anybody else unless you wanna relive highschool
I loved this class! Tanya really cares for her students and wants them to be successful. This class actually improves your english abilities by constant practice, and really helps to improve writing and literacy skills. It was a really fun, engaging class with good books. Light, enjoyable homework
So far my worse instructor meet in Langara, she should teach in high school
One of the best English teacher/professors I have ever had. She is super kind, very open to discussions, and always open to giving feedback that is easily applicable. She can be a tough marker, but the feedback she gives is fairly clear and she will go over the most common mistakes in essays for her classes at the time. Highly recommend.
Tanya is a great professor. I enjoy her teaching skills and even though some of the students hate the no device policy, I enjoy it because I am listen more because there are less distractions. She is enthusiastic and dedicated to teaching. She also helped me a lot. Would really like to be her student again.
Tanya can be a tough grader, but attending her engaging lectures and using unstuck ai for extra practice helps. The workload is heavy, but it's manageable if you stay on top of the readings.
Very engaging and passionate instructor! Tanya is incredibly knowledgable, and creates an amazing class environment. We read three books during this course and had many assignments, but none were exceptionally difficult. Just try your best and make sure to read the required books. Great prof.
She is a very strict grader. Her class might be suitable for those who aren't concerned about their GPA, have the time to invest in memorizing complex or less practical terms, and are ready to meet the instructor's rigorous standards. For others, it may be worth considering alternative options.
Tanya was a wonderful teacher and was extremely approachable. She gave clear and concise feedback on your work and would make sure that you understood the mistakes you made. You could tell that she is extremely passionate about her job and that made the class so much easier because you knew you could trust what she was saying!
Tanya is a great prof, super enthusiastic and great at orchestrating meaningful discussions. She likes group projects which aren't my thing but she's very sweet and passionate about the material!
