If you want to keep a good average don't take this class. She's a very hard marker and acts as though she has something to prove.
Although Tanya has high expectations of her students, it only mades you want to work harder. She is extremely intelligent which is a bit intimidating at first but she is a really great prof and person once you get to know her.

She is a great teacher! She is a tough marker but is very clear.
didn't like her style at all.. very hard, brought down my avergae
Amazing prof! Makes the lectures very clear and easy to understands! Uses a lot of examples to clarify everything!
My favourite prof of all time. She is so easy to understand and makes the lectures funny, to make up for the sometimes dry material.
She is wonderful :)
Unreal professor. Without a doubt one of my favourites! Her sense of humour and unbelievable intelligence make any lecture worth attending.
interacted with the class and made sure to clarify her material
Very accomadating. Seems like a great, down-to-earth person
She is by far the best professor I have ever had in my entire life. Ever.
Amazing prof. one of the best prof I've had so far
Awesome professor!! She was very interactive and clear. She also showed passion in what she taught which is great to see.
Tanya is an excellent advisor. I agree that she has high expectations and that she can be intimidating if you are easily weakened. However, she is extremely considerate and willing to work as hard as she expects from others to make sure you excel. Tanya is very approachable and straight forward. She is understanding and always willing to help
This instructor has a very dynamic teaching style. She was willing to spend extensive periods of time helping her students. She also showed high interest in individual students. Despite the fact that the course subject matter was rather dull, she was able to hold the class' interest wielding her unbearable charm, wit, and charisma. Excellent work.
Extremely challenging course. She can be very rude but if you go and meet with her and person she seems to warm up more to you. Kinda annoying that you have to do that since she definitely has her favourites but if you do go and chat with her, she will like you!
Great lecturer, engages students, explains material very clearly, renewed my faith in humanity when she took over lectures after Christmas. Lectures are easy to follow, has lots of slides in a logical, sequential order and talks about what's on each slide as she goes through them, unlike a certain other psych professor.
Switched my major because of her. She made usual stats look like rocket science. Confusing, stressful, assignments did not make any sense. Structure of the course is one of the worst I've had so far. University lost over 15% of psych honors students, because of her. Avoid her as much as possible.
Tanya Martini is by far one of the greatest professors I have been taught by. Although she may come off as intimidating at first, she places the utmost importance on preparing her students for research careers. She is a brutally honest person who genuinely cares about her students. She is a professional, realistic and inspirational individual.
Dr. Martini was by far the best professor I've had at Brock. She cares about the success of her students and makes that an attainable goal. She's a dynamic lecturer, making class enjoyable to attend. She's a bit of a tough grader, but it's because she has high expectations of her students.
I really enjoyed her teaching style! Very intelligent and doesn't just want us to understand the material, but she wants to teach us how to take good notes and how to do well in school. She is very interactive and lots of fun to listen to! Very clear as to what is important to know! Her testing is fair, if you study and go to class you'll do well
The main role of any professor in developing a course is to make it clear, organised, and useful for any given student. Tanya was not able to present organised and useful course. It feels almost like she was too busy or did not care to think what she wants students to know.
I've never interacted with a professor more invested in her students' success. Sure, courses are structured differently (many smaller assignments) but they usually have a greater purpose (preparing you to interview or conduct research). Unfortunately, those who have a hard time adapting to challenges- you may struggle-but welcome to University/life
Martini as a person is awesome. She cares about her students and really wants them to succeed. The course is very tough! Tough grader. Basically a writing class and recognizing research designs. Learn to read fast for exams and make sure you get help when needed! She tries to make lectures entertaining and funny.
AMAZING Prof. Made you understand the content... not just memorize it. She ALWAYS was willing to help out and make time for students. Was funny, and there was rarely a dull moment in lecture --- that says a lot for a stats class
When it comes to actually teaching content I find her mediocre at best. We spent an entire month going over material I learned in grade 8. Whats worse is that she talks about the same basic nonsense EVERY SINGLE CLASS. We'll finish late most of the time because she spends the first 20min-1hr of every class going over content again and again.
Real gem
Ive been reduced to tears many times during lectures out of pure frustration. The lecture could easily be 1hr long but needs to be 2hrs to account for all the time she wastes. All of September and the first chapter of the textbook is dedicated to "studying proactively". I thought this was a psychology course, not a how-to-study course.
Absolute gem of a prof. Although I bombed the progress exam (as did around 80% of our class), she was an awesome prof. Funny, relatable, really makes lecture non-stressful. Tanya if you're ever reading this, I love ya.
Amazing professor! Truly cares about her students and is extremely knowledgable. She makes lecture very interesting and enjoyable. Definitely my fav!!
Wonderful lecturer. You'll never be struggling to keep up, or sitting there bored. You still need the textbook.
Says she wants all of her students to be successful but then when exam time comes in December she wants everyone to go into the exam with no exam review or any sense of what could be on the exam except that we must know EVERYTHING learned in lecture, seminar and in the textbook.
I've never met such a caring professor. She really wants you to succeed and gives you all the tools you need to do so - no, she doesn't hand you the answers, because she wants to ensure you actually understand the material. She's WONDERFUL.
While Martini would be a great motivational speaker, her lectures were difficult to follow and I often left with a "what was the point of THAT?!" feeling. She seems to care a lot about her favourites, but holds grudges against students who don't give answers she wants. I always gave my best, but wasn't her ideal- felt shunned quite often.
Martini is a great speaker but she has unrealistic expectations of her students. She wasted a LOT of time discussing how supportive she is to students and how much she wants them to do well but gave no support when it came to the final. For being a class that should have been very interesting, it was overall pretty disappointing.
This course is awfully designed. Painfully boring seminars, horrible online modules. Overall, the course feels like an absolute waste of my time and tuition money. In addition to that, she is not understanding about late extensions at all. This is probably the worst course I have ever taken. Unfortunately, it is required for psychology majors.
She gives amazing lectures that are very engaging. If you go up to her after lecture and ask questions, she is very helpful. She won't tell you the answer straight up because she wants you to get there on your own, but she will give you suggestions to help you get there. She's an amazing prof but she doesn't allow you to slack off.
Tanya is amazing! She gave you time to copy lecture slides, THEN added more information. Her lectures were structured so well and were easy to understand. You can tell she wants her students to succeed, she's a great professor.
Good prof, tough content
Great prof, tough material. But she gives you ample time to copy slides, so that's a plus!
Martini is so candid with the classes she teaches. She was open and honest about failing psychology first year at brock and is so caring. "You did the best you could, under the circumstances" will stick with me for the rest of my university experience. She makes lectures so fun and gets everyone involved, absolutely great. She cares.
PSYC 1F90 was a hard class and Tanya was very verbal about the fact that many students fail. Would've been nice if she actually included relevant info on the exam rather than a random study she briefly mentioned once in class. She preaches the Achilles heel when it was never relevant to the exam. She also preached a concept map which was useless.
Lectures could be boring because of the topics but Martini is a great prof who clearly cares about what she is teaching and the students. The 5 small tests were easy, great mark boosters, and really helped with the final grade. I would definitely recommend getting the online textbook and taking the time to go over the main topics in it.
This course 2p01 is such a waste of time and money. Dr. Martini thinks its ok to have her class volunteer during the covid pandemic. Does not take into account some people do not have sufficient internet for online volunteering. There are barley any organizations taking volunteers right now!! This could should be optional to say the least
Prof expects us to get 20 hours of volunteer experience which would be fine except we are in a pandemic and hours are few and far between. Thinks that we need to apply everywhere to get the hours which is extremely stressing on our part because you will fail without the hours... not very understanding.
Tanya's lectures are great. She interacts with the students in the lecture which is fun and engaging. As long as you attend all lectures and do the textbook readings, you should be able to pass. Tough grader and heavy work load, but you get out of the class what you put into it.
The lectures feel very long. The assignments are big and take so much time to do. The demonstrations done in class do help make the lectures better as they make it easier to understand certain concepts.
She great
Carried PSYC 1F90 for the entire first semester, amazing lectures and very engaging. Best first year prof by far.
loved her! super interesting lectures with a clear beginning middle and conclusion. kept me engaged even through less interesting material. would take a course with her again!
Dr. Martini doesn't let you know your grades before going into an exam. She does not go in-depth about project even though it's worth 30% of the grade. Did not tell us how to write a research paper even though we are first years and the paper was due in November. She also goes fast in lectures. If you can avoid PSYC 1F90.
A really good prof and kept students engaged. I enjoyed her lectures and she was very good at explaining things, but, did not help us. She claims that she cares about her students, but we do not have any of our marks going into exams nor do we have any information about the exam and what we should know. 8 chapters and 10 lectures is crazy!
Ngl she is one of the worst professors I have had this year. She goes fast on her lectures, and missed some parts for her handouts. Our exam consists of 8 chapters of the textbook, and 10 lectures based on heavy content. Like it is not easy. I just want to pass at this point and be done with it. :(
Martini provides amazing and engaging lectures. I appreciate the time and effort she puts into lectures. You must attend lectures and read at least 8 hours of a textbook a week to understand key concepts according to Martini. She offers guided notes for the textbook which is helpful but the amount of reading can be difficult with other classes.
Tanya Martini conveys an absurd amount of information for the overall understanding of the course.Expect to receive 0 marks back before your midterm exam, and try to stay mentally stable while knowing that. The exam is composed of 116 multiple choice, and 17 short answer questions. I recommend not taking psych if you dont need it
If you don't have to take PSYC 1F90, avoid it! Mandatory weekly homework. Hidden assignment expectations have students losing 25% (rubrics and outlines are not the same). There is no exam review; the final exam is 116 multiple-choice (worth 0.5 each) and 17 short answers with multiple parts. Only good thing was speed for lecture & email answering.
I literally dread going to this class, some lectures are so unbearable
Nice lady but her expectations are unreasonable for a first year intro to psyc class. She makes you go into the exam with no idea of your grade, expects you to have 8 hours a week to read, and expects you to treat her class like a part time job. She gives ZERO guidance on how to prepare for the exam, only says we need to know it all (text+lec).
terrible prof, expects you to study everyday for this class like you have no life, exams are very hard most people fail, seminars are pointless dont learn anything except not to cheat and academic misconduct, dont take if you dont have to
Horrible exam.
Worst professor at Brock. Expects us to know everything for the exam with no review. 116 MC, 17 long answers with multiple parts (3 hours). No grades before the exam. Horrible lectures.Extremely stressful. Left to teach yourself. Weekly homework and mandatory participation studies. You go mentally insane and question your life choices. AVOID PSYC
sem 1 exam is massive and includes everything you learned including readings and all lecture content. martini moves fast through lectures and there is a lot of note taking.
very hard class
Prof made us pay for a textbook she wrote and then decided to not integrate any textbook content into the course or lectures. Then we get a 133 question exam on both lecture and textbook content (when the hell was the textbook relevant????). Also just didn't get ideas across in the most clear manner but that could be a me thing.
Dr. Martini is a passionate and engaging lecturer, the exam was textbook-heavy and those saying it was never mentioned just clearly didn't go to lecture or check D2L. Read the textbook, and follow the checklist on D2L and you'll be fine. She is a tough grader, but she is very well versed in topics and her field, and it shows in her lectures.
She was an incredible professor and kept the lectures very engaging. But the marking is very hard and nit pick every little thing. The exam was based on EVERYTHING youve learned down to every definition in the textbook and every example in the lecture. Her as a prof was incredible but the grading system and course load was very difficult.
Made lectures interesting, and i truly think the hard part was when she left and other lecturers came in. Very nice tho just not graded on many things
i don't understand why people hate on dr. martini so much?? people often say she's too hard/doesn't prepare us for the exam but that's ridiculous. she did an entire lecture explaining exactly what to study for so if you failed the exam that's on you. the class is hard but that's because it's psychology, i don't know why people are surprised
Dr. Martini is extremely understanding and kind. She has engaging and unique lectures. She makes her expectations extremely clear and if you follow her guidance you should be good! :)
anyone that gave her a good review didn't go through the attendance necessary course, I don't mind an attendance necessary course but with a course this material heavy uploading the notes would help especially when the exam average is low. she was a okay lecturer but bad at running the course.
This professor gave me a hard time throughout the entire fall semester. The content was not the main problem, it was how she ran the course. It was an absolute mess, and she would often not be clear on her instructions.
she sets you up for success it is that simple. Guided textbook and lecture notes, very interesting and interactive lectures.
The attendance of mandatory seminars is a MAJOR waste of time. Martini is an amazing prof who cares about success and is quick to respond to emails. She is not a hard marker but expects you to know the topics in depth and marks according to that. There is not many assignments in this class. So make sure to not complete the ones you do have last min
Dr. Martini has clear lecture notes and goes through the content in lecture at a fair pace while leaving time to copy notes. Lectures will have interactive moments that keeps students engaged in the content, this also promotes better memory with the lectures as it involves an experience instead of regular note taking. Overall good paced course.
She is incredibly kind and the lectures quite engaging. However, the expectations are WAY too high. It's genuinely impossible for students to memorise 10 lectures and 8 chapters (42 sections). No matter how early you start, you're bound to forget things. It's too stressful. Check if this is a mandatory class for you - if not, avoid at all costs!
Tanya is a very engaging lecturer. She is easy to understand and gives the class lots of time to get down lecture notes. Everything she teaches in this course is very interesting and she involves the class often. I would highly recommend this course and Dr. Martini as a professor!
Good lectures and must attend to fill out lecture guided notes. Lecture notes and textbook notes are used for the exam. You MUST read the textbook!!!
Lots of content and homework mandatory to understanding the course as a whole, however lectures were structured and explained well- providing varied examples to explain concepts. I enjoyed this course thus far, but is definitely a course you must work hard for.
The professor seemed supportive at first, but her approach was unclear. She didn't offer sufficient explanations for assignments, and even following instructions didn't guarantee correct results. The grading was strict, and her teaching methods lacked clarity, making the course more difficult and frustrating than expected. Overall BAD PROF
350 characters is not enough for me to go off about this professor. I could write a whole essay to rant about this class and the professors. If this wasn't mandatory for my major, would not take again.
This professor is awful, terrible teacher, terrible course structure, overall a bad experience with both the class and prof, lots of reading is done and instructions are very unclear. Do not take this prof of class
This prof was very unhelpful, the way she presents her self is very different from how the class is. Her classes are confusing with very unclear instructions and very high expectations as students are expected to do perfect.very unorganized very hard to get a good grade overall a bad prof and bad class do not recommend taking unless needed.
Dr. Martini was a great professor. She had clearly outlined all projects with rubrics. Her lectures were engaging and funny. The exam was focused on both lecture content and textbook readings. The textbook readings, however, were long and boring, but they were essential to doing well in the course.
This class is so hard the lectures were fun but they expect way too much for students to memorize everything. If this course has three professors teaching different topics why do they expect students to memorize everything ?
Live laugh love Dr Martini, she may seem intimidating but she is truly an amazing individual. Attend lectures, read the textbook, talk in seminar, and you'll be fine. PSYC 1F90 is a tough class, but putting in the effort makes all the difference. She is so sweet and wicked smart, always willing to support students
Not as bad as people make her out to be, however she is the toughest professor in PSYC 1F90. As long as you read her sections throughly and make good notes during lectures you will be fine. Exams are a huge and somewhat hard, but her exam was curved (when I did it).
I'm biased as I'm a psych major, but I found she was a wonderful professor. She was very passionate and lectured quite well. To do well, you had to read the textbook.
I like her lecture soo much, her lecture is the best I've ever had. I did bad in exams though, this course has lots of reading and I did not read. If you follow her schedule and do your readings every week you'll be fine otherwise good luck. Everytime her lecture makes me wanna transfer major to psyc and then the textbook drags me back to reality.
On her own she's a good lecturer, however her exams were brutal and are notorious for extremely low averages, get ready to expect a grade within the 50-70 range. Most people fail one of the exams. She has her own textbook that she makes you buy, which is roughly 150$. I suggest looking for a second hand one, but you'll be using it every week.
Dr. Tanya Martini is undoubtedly an excellent lecturer who effectively engages her students. However, her course is known for being particularly challenging due to its broad and general scope, making it difficult to study and retain all the material for such tough exams.
Her lectures jumped around a lot but they were very informative and very entertaining. She did a number of lecture experiments where she would assign students to different groups and have them perform different tasks (usually reading or memorizing) in order to build hands-on knowledge of course concepts.
Professor Martini is the most engaging teacher I've ever had. Her lectures were, of course, content-heavy, but every minute of them piqued my interest and held my focus. The class was not easy, and it took a lot of hard work. Dr. Martini sets a high bar, but she also provides you with EVERYTHING you need to succeed and do well. 10/10 class and prof

Good luck. All I gotta say.
Martini is an engaging lecturer, but lectures feel useless. Exams are long and mostly textbook-based—so be ready to read. The project was awful with almost no guidance, yet expectations were high. Seminars weren't helpful either, as the TA (a student) couldn't help much because she wasn't allowed to.
I love how energetic and passionate she is about what she teaches. Her real-world examples make the material easy to grasp. I especially appreciate how she starts with a story related to the topic and then ties back to it at the end for a full-circle moment.
She gives the most entertaining lectures and draws everything back to real-world examples, which helps with comprehension.
I took her PSYC1F90 last year. The course is reading heavy & test heavy, and the written report was unclear, with almost 0 guidance, yet really high expectations. Seminars are unhelpful, but participating can help boost your mark. My advice: READ THE TEXTBOOK FROM DAY 1 AND PARTICIPATE IF YOU WANT TO PASS!!!
Please theres so much talking and its so much work and it genuinely seems like she dont gaf if u understand or not
Need to go to lecture for notes, exam is textbook heavy as well. Lots of reading. She does put a plan out for when certain chapters should be done though. She also does little games in lectures to keep us entertained.
Very hard and the class was so difficult did not understand a thiny
I enjoyed Dr. Martini's lectures and found them engaging and thoughtfully presented. While the material was interesting, the exams were challenging and lengthy. They rely heavily on the textbook, so staying on top of the readings and beginning your studying early is essential. Overall, the course can be demanding, but it's manageable with effort.
I did not enjoy this class at all. They make the lectures seem so much easier than it actually is. I get it's university so it's going to be hard but this exam was just ridiculous. The seminar classes barely go in line with what you learn in lecture, and overall I think this exam needs to have either a cheat sheet or make it easier this is ridiculous
