She's really nice and shows lots of movies, but they are on the tests. Not a class you can skip and she talks really fast but if you read the book you'll be fine:)
its a hard course, and its unclear as beer.
Unreasonable marking
Very impersonable person. not approachable, difficult on testing materials. not fair in asking questions on topics not covered in class. she talks very quickly while you copy off the overhead projectors/powerpoints. movies are a plus to this class.
Seems to have this air about her that makes her seem like she thinks she's better than everyone.
Very disappointing prof. She was hard to understand and was generally stuck up and unhelpful. I would not recommend this professor unless you enjoy paying tuition to watch movies.
Her teaching skills are very poor and her testing abilities are worse. Her tests are impossible, you can study your butt off for them, you'll still suck unless your last name is Einstein. Stay away from her if you can!!!!!
not great but not awful. made you work for your mark which is always a good thing. doesn't put her notes on the p drive and goes fairly quickly so its hard to get much out of class. needs some improvements but i would take another course with her.
Very conceited, unapproachable. St. Mary's should be ashamed to have such a poor quality professor. She is an embarassment.
Dr. Peckmann was a great professor and very caring although, her marking was perhaps a bit biased at times. She expects you to work for your grade..no handouts! It is not impossible to do well...you have to work really hard.
She's new and she has to learn... but she's fair
She is great but a little bit unassertive - (she's new). She has a big knowledge, but you has to learn very hard
She's organized, but you pretty much teach yourself. Tests are take home,1 week, yet she expects a lot. I wasn't aware that she marked SO hard and expected that much on the take homes. I've gotten 50s so far and I'm an A/B student. Reference every single thing you say! Never again a class with her.
Very bias in marking, not fair at all. She either likes you or not, she takes favourites. I have had her for two years and I am very happy that I will not be in one of of her classes. hate.
Have had Peckmann for 2 years and she has not changed. VERY biased when marking and picks favourites. Were required to purchase text and there were not any in-class tests, only take-homes unrelated to class material. Never Again!
I wasn't one of the favorites. Terribly unfair. Cares more about format than conext. Ridiculous marking scheme. Doesn't seem like she even likes to teach. Don't take your anger out on me! Lighten up!! Only lectured for a few classes, then some horrible movie watching and presentations. Don't bother.
Worst class I ever took. 830 Mon Wed Fri.. As if she couldn't help out with the notes once in a while don't take this class if you can avoid it!!
I dropped this class cuz of her, she just seemed really strict and expected too much
Dr. Peckmann was an advisor on my BA thesis and I found her to be very approachable and very helpful. When I ran into problems, she was available, provided excellent advice, and was very generous with her time. It's too bad that not enough people have seen this side of her.
'This lady should not be teaching. She is a horric teacher. I dropped out of the entire anthropology program because of her. She thinks she is the be all and end all of forensics and frankly she is not. She needs to give the students in her classes more credit because they deserve it.
She is a ****. NOTHING relovent from the text was on the exams!! .. she sucks .. I am a straight A student, and got a C+ in her class.. even after reading the text three times.

The assignments are hard for this prof, only to the point where you can never back up your information enough! She knows what she is talking about, i respect her teaching she, tells know only enough information where you can go and do what you need to do on your own, her pop quizzes are all about description.
horrible class, very hard, quizzes are ridiculous to expect us to do well, and the worse part of the class is GROUP WORK!!!! Doesn't work and we suffer because we get stuck in bad groups. She wears the same clothes every day...and marks hard on essay's
She is the biggest ***** ever! She marks on the craziest things, the group work is horrible, her quizzes don't make since, and she screams at us like we're idiots on top of it all! I regret not dropping this class the first day I walked in because it's made the semester suck. She shouldn't be teaching!
I was really looking forward to this class, even though I've had peckmann before. Big mistake. she is a heinous **** really. I am in 4000 level courses that are easier than this intro course. She marks ridiculously and I'm tired of her inferiority complex attitude. Not to mention group work is ridiculous in university and the assignments suck.
Dr. Peckmann is a great prof. She's very upfront about what she expects from her students so you know exactly what you need to to to get a good mark. She may seem intimidating and stern in class, but she's actually really helpful, approachable and nice. If you take the time to talk to her she'll really help you out. Lazy students need not apply.
if tall women with short hair and abrupt nature really turn you on, you may not want have her as a prof , which is why I had to drop this class because i could not focus on anything but her
Amazing prof and smart woman. Those who complain about the workload and her grading should really be thanking her. I feel so much more prepared for my other courses after this one. I see assignments in a whole new light, and focus a lot more on putting everything I have into them. If you don't like to work, go back to high school.
She is an incredibly hard teacher, which I can respect because they challange you and, after all that's what we are all in university for, but... she takes her power trippy-thing a little too far!

Even though I got an A in her course, I still dislike her. She is on an extreme power trip. She acts as though she is the most intelligent person in the department. Perhpas she thinks fear will instill good quality work but in fact she intemidtaes her students. The department should truly have a talk with this HOT HEAD!
I was REALLY excited about taking this course, but she TOTALLY ruened it for me (and almost EVERYONE I have talked to). She is VERY smart, but has no people skills. She is on the biggest power trip I have ever seen, and all she does is yell and ****. When I wanted to go over an assignment with her, she insulted me and my work and then dismissed me
Dr. Peckmann will challenge you academically. If you're lazy you will get what you deserve. She is not at all unreasonable and over the past 3 years and 4 courses with her I have developed the utmost respect for her & she may be one of my favorite anthro profs @ SMU. All you whining about your intro class, get over it. More than likely you slacked.
She assigned some pretty****ty groups for the assignments, but her tests were not all that difficult. I dispised the pop quizzes!!!!
Poorly structured class. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE IF YOU ARE IN BUSINESS. It is not worth the drop in GPA or hastles. She will put you in a group and will not do anything to restore equality if the need arises. Also, she is the first prof that I have had that is more concerned with format as oppose to the actual material tought.
what a horrible teacher... she gave no insight on what she wanted done on assignments, and was soooooo ridiculous when marking them, going as far as taking pts off for page numbers not being in the center of the page. id advise you not to choose her as a prof
Course is extremely difficult, but i have also never learned more from an intro class. She will help you if you treat her with respect, but she is very stubborn on grades and groupwork. As long as you take notes and attend class you will do fine
She's a hard marker & gives highly incomprehensible assignments. She will apparently change things on a whim the class before it's due. Doesn't clarify what she wants, even after numerous attempts of asking her & then looks at you like you're an idiot when you fail. Quizzes were easy, but study hard for the exams. Take this only if you have to.
I have to disagree with the negative comments. Dr. Peckmann makes it very clear what she is looking for on assignments, and about what can be expected on exams. She wants you to actually work for your grades, to prepare you for those upper level courses in the future. If you come to class and do all your reading, you should be fine.
i do not recommend this prof. The assignments never corresponded to the material we were learning in class, and the instructions were often quite vague. Even asking her to clarify doesnt help. I didnt feel like we spent enough of topics relevant to the course description
Out of every prof I have had thus far at SMU, she is the absolute worst. I would highly recomend not taking a class if she is the prof. She is a very particular marker and is very un-clear with directions for all assignments given. On top of that she seems like she is always in a bad mood, and is very rude to students.
The most you'll ever learn from an intro type crs. A lot of reading, very interesting class. I'd advise you take with some other professor though. Peckmann needs to get some *&* and unwind, really rude, unapproachable woman!
Dr. Peckmann is tough but reasonable in her demands. You'll learn a lot from her, especially if you plan on doing an MA or PhD for which the demands are quite rigorous. The complainers on here are slackers, can't spell and just want an easy course. Try using the educational opportunity to better yourself and stop wanting a free ride!
Her Forensic course was very interesting however she was an extremely hard prof. She is rude and unclear in her assignments. Group assignments suck and her exams are not from the book or slides!
I had her for Forensics and Who Owns the Past. Quite abrupt. Large classes = all group assignments. I think she also played favorites. Her marking is very tough, and attendance is mandatory. She's N.S.'s Forensic Anthropologist, and very knowledgeable, but difficult in class. Lazy students should stay away; hard workers are welcome.
I hated the woman when I took her intro course, but she's awesome now. 3471 and 3472 are extremely hard courses (went from 20 to 10 people) and unless you plan to work extremely hard, don't bother signing up. I found it extremely rewarding and am looking forward to taking ANTH 4701 with her. Summary: Work hard, don't BS and show up to class!
She grades papers primarily on formatting and style rather than content resulting in zeros having nothing to do with her Anthropology class. She posses no social skills, shutting out student's requests for information or clarification. She's unnecessarily rude and abrupt. Terrible teaching, a prime example of a worker hired to do a teacher's job.
Dr. Peckmann lays out her expectations and policies early. She sticks to them and is always willing to help. At the same time she is fairly busy even by Prof. standards and doesn't have time for students who are not going to work. Don't be afraid to ask her for help. Try to put some though into what you are having difficulties with before you go.
She is extremely knowledgeable. For an intro course you do learn alot. However, she does not clearly state what is expected of you when it comes to assignments and tests. Even when I had attended every class and completed all my notes and assignments, even attending the optional bonus lab I always felt I was missing something.
Professor doesn't seem to enjoy teaching and has a very negative attitude. She is very unapproachable and appears to put appearing strict and intimidating over being reasonable with marks. The course is interesting and worth taking just be prepared for a stressful experience!
Horrible teacher, she knew what she was talking about, but very mean and impersonal, hard hard marker, and some things on the tests weren't taught in the class. She does give you the textbook online, but only because it is out of print. All assignments are group assignments. Does have lots of guest speakers, which is a nice break.
Seriously awful Prof. I have gone to her for help and she was compoletely rude. My group and I took our dental assignment to a dentist who preceded to inform us that the xrays we were given would NEVER be used they were so awful and that what we were given was something he would have done in 3rd year dentistry. Avoid her at all costs.
She has horrible personal skills and is really rude. If you ask her a question she makes you look like a dumbass in front of everyone. Second half she hardly lectured us. it was all guest lectures who make it difficult to get any decent notes. And no im not lazy, I worked my ass off in that class for a B- and I am an A average student.
Intro to forensic anthro was one of the best courses I've ever taken. You learn alot but you have to work to get good marks which isnt suprising- its university. Attendance is mandatory- take detailed notes and format your assignments correctly and youll do well. STUDY and use common sense.
Run far far away.
a very interesting course, just be ready to know all theories or case studies and who came up with them or were involved with them at exam time.
This prof in knowledgable, but her social, and personal skills need a heck of a lot of work. She is not easy to approach. She makes students feel stupid, and makes us feel like we should be up to her level of knowledge. I came into this class excited to learn about forensic anthropology, but now I'm not so sure. She completely lost my interest.
I highly recommend this class especially with this prof. You will learn a lot and the assignments are very interesting.
This is a hard class, she switched to a mix of online/ groups assignments probably because of evaluations. She expects a lot of her students, the group assignments are a pain, and the tests are detailed. However she's a good lecturer and incredibly knowledgeable. If you come to class and a willing to work hard you learn a lot. I loved this course.
Assignments for this class were engaging and interesting. Required group work and applied knowledge. Lectures were clear and used guest speakers to expand knowledge of subject. Peckmann comes across as harsh but she is just very clear in her expectations. Follow instructions and you'll do fine.
One of those professors you do not address by their first name or "ms", strictly "doctor". She's quite intimidating but is helpful if you approach during her office hours. Explanations for group assignments lacked clarity but her lectures were clear and super interesting! Extremely knowledgeable and highly educated.
Gives very clear instructions and plainly states expectations. Excellent lecturer who knows the material, however, she expects a very high level of work and you need to put a lot of time in Dr. Peckman's courses to do well. Always willing to help people who pay attention and attend class, but if this is not the case don't even bother to ask
Dr. Peckmann is a world of knowledge! Her class was really enjoyable, and she did explain what she wanted to be done on assignments and quizzes and tests. Occasionally (And she admits it!) She will go quick in lecture - it is because she is so passionate about it! Study for your tests and quizzes, and you will do fine! Definitely recommend.
She is completely knowledgeable but lacks social skills. She comes off as arrogant and pompous, if you ask for extra help she blows you away. I have never hated a prof so much, I don't care how professional she is at her job, she is still a professor and I'm a student who is paying for her paycheck. The least she can do is help me when I ask for it
Knows her stuff- she's very passionate about the course and her lectures are always very interesting... But they blow by. You're expected to know everything that is said in lecture AND everything that appears in the powerpoints, but it's impossible to get everything down in notes and she REFUSES to post the slides. EVERYTHING is testable (!!!)
She knows a lot about her subject but she is horrible to associate with. Her social skills are lacking. She expects you to know every bit of info ever mentioned during the class in lectures and in the textbooks. Her test questions are always really obscure. She puts all her responsibilities as a prof off on other people and is not helpful.
I took her intro to forensic anthropology class and she was an excellent professor. Very passionate and knowledgeable. I took it as an elective and was very interested in her lectures. However her tests are challenging. When she says everything is testable, she means it (!!) but you are fine as long as you attend class.
She talks a lot about her own life and less about class work. She expects you to remember everything off her power points but changes the slides quickly and speaks to fast. Everything she says or teaches, may be on the test.
Dr. Peckmann is a great, knowledgeable professor. She knows that she's talking about and she gives lots of examples. Very note heavy, I wouldn't recommend skipping a class. She makes you work for a good mark but you have a lot of opportunities to make up a bad grade.
I find she can be very rude to students which makes it hard to talk to her during office hours, i find she doesn't care much about individual students! she doesn't post any lecture slides yet she skips through the slides too fast to for anyone to write stuff down. She will also test you on things she did not even teach!!!
She knows what she is talking about and is able to answer any questions you have but I find her courses tough. Course material was too much for the period of time to learn it. We were expected to know way too much for the short amount of time we had in between tests and quizzes. I had a very high interest in this course and it was disappointing.
Loved that she shared many stories from her own experience in the field and that she brought in multiple guest speakers. However, the slides aren't posted on brightspace (she does have a good reason for it though) so you have to write really fast (and even then you might not catch everything).
Tanya is awesome! Her classes are so interesting but she goes fast through her lectures so make sure you have the notes down pat. It's a easy class if you attend, and have a good grasp on the material. She may come off a bit aloof but she's a solid lady once you get to know her and is available for advice or feedback (in my experience).
Dr. Peckmann is a brilliant woman. She's passionate about her work & the subject was quite interesting. However, she clearly lacks social skills. She is very unapproachable. I did well in this course & I'm still quite interested in the field, but I will definitely be avoiding any classes with her in the future as I found her quite intimidating.
This is one of my favourite profs and class. She doesn't post slides so you will be taking a lot of notes. She really knows her stuff and makes the class super interesting. The real life examples she tells are very fun to hear and she'll bring in guest speakers. You should read the textbook and test/assignments are hard but would 10/10 recommend.
Mixed feelings about this prof. While she's very knowledgeable, & I would take courses with her again for that knowledge, her courses are extremely hard to take. Be prepared for endless readings, never being able to miss a class (ever), and strict grading. It seems as though she has a specific style she wants followed for essays yet it is unclear.
This course was very hard, however if you're interested in the subject, you'll find it a little easier. She flies through notes, but her lectures are very interesting. I wouldn't suggest skipping classes because she doesn't post her lectures online. Tests are very hard, but her quizzes and assignments are online so those can really help.
This class was enjoyable and interesting, Peckmann ensured classes were stimulating and included real life examples. Quizzes and assignments occurred every week on bright space they were easy and straightforward if you attended class and took notes.
Im experiencing this class, ANTH 2283 and this professor for the first time through online learning. She locks the lectures after 24 hours and provides no additional slides or information on each topic. Her introduction was very cold. I do not recommend the course for weak stomached people, Im finding it emotionally heavy.
My first experience was over email: incredibly rude. Required an out of print textbook. Lectures only up for 48 hours. No feedback on tests or assignments. Told us that because an asisgnment was easier explained in person than in a video it would not be explained. Impersonal, rude, cold. Was going to take paleopathology... Absolutely will not be.
Dr. Peckmann is a very intelligent individual. With that seems to come a lot of cockiness. Its like she expects her students to require the same level of smart she has when we have never been introduced to the topic. She shows no mercy. If you fail you fail, thats your problem. If you need help, you might as well as your wall.
Good prof overall
Professor Peckmann is very impersonal, she speeds through lectures, and she is not very kind over email. her lectures are only available Mon-Fri which is hard for someone working full time. she tests on every little thing. she doesn't give any slack if you cant make a quiz, I was out of service range for 24h and she basically said too bad.
(Intro to Forensic Anth) Dr. Peckmann is tough, fair & very organized. Her weekly lectures/tests/assignments really help you to engage with the material! Lectures are very interesting. The material is graphic but the course is on a graphic subject. If you are interested in this field definitely take this class - be prepared to work but enjoy it!
Dr. Peckmann is knowledgeable about her field but, i would not recommend taking her classes. she has little interest in teaching, she is unapproachable and I found her cold. I withdrew from her class back in 2020, I waited 2 years to take the class in person, she cancelled the first in-person class and moved the class back to asynchronous online.
If I'm paying EXTRA tuition for online courses I expect to be able to access all of the content from a course throughout the semester. I know this is to get students to engage in the material and take notes but it's absurd. Both editions of the textbook are required but one is out of print and the free version isn't always accessible.
Absolutely worst experience of my entire undergrad. She doesn't care about the quality of learning, she cares about making things easy for herself; reuses all of the same tests + lecture material without even changing the dates (I'm in a Fall course and all of her dates say January, february etc). she also outed me for having a disability (???).
asynchronous course, lots of little 5 question quizzes but always on the topic of attached videos (usually 15-30 minute ted talks, lectures, etc). always automatically graded so no wait times and very flexible with class caps. she opened 20 extra seats for a course just in case anyone knew another student who wished to join.
Dr. Peckmann is very knowledgeable. Her online classes are interesting and to the point. Do not let the bad reviews turn you down from taking one of her classes. She is one of the best professors in anthropology at SMU.
Tried to take her forensic anthropologist course TWICE, both times she moved it to an online asynchronous course due to her research prioroties , making it almost impossible to take/pass, she used old lectures and took them offline after a week. Very knowledgable but extremely unapproachable, doesn't seem to like teaching and makes it VERY obvious
She's been great, easy lectures to follow, and everything has been online.
The course in general was very interesting and engaging even though it was online. All materials were available online for a week or more then taken off, so if you did not take the notes within that timeframe, you would struggle on the tests or quizzes but other then that it was a great course and would highly recommended her course!!
Despite the courses being as easy as dirt, she so clearly does not care about teaching them that they're consistently a slog. The material could be interesting, if it wasn't clearly repeated from other courses, several years old, or barely relevant. The tests are badly worded, and she is frequently rude or unhelpful over email.
Would not recommend
She's great, her courses are tough to take notes through. You'll have to pause the lecture every few seconds to take notes, your hands will be sore. there are no shortcuts in her classes. I used to be a very lazy student, her classes set me up to take school seriously. If you take notes and refer back to them, the assignments will be very easy.
Course material was super interesting, but it was ruined by her attitude. Genuinely THE rudest prof I've interacted with. Everything's graded automatically thru brightspace, and she doesn't allow feedback- near impossible to figure out what went wrong. Lectures are fast-paced, and are only available for a week/5 days- same with the textbook. AVOID.
lovely small bites about 10 items throughout the course that are small and worth small amounts make learning more inviting.
Quizzes, assignments worth 10-15% each makes it easier to bounce back if you fail. Excellent teacher
Quizzes, tests, assignments worth 5-15% makes it easy to learn material even thou the material is tough. CLASS ANTH 3475 Paleopathology
I took this as an online course so I never met the prof in person but I still found the course super interesting. I have decided to change my minor to anthropology due to this course. I actually liked that there was a set schedule for all of the lectures and quizzes because you actually had to do the work to get the grade. Definitely a challenge.
the people who rate this professor low are likely slacking and biased. I have taken 5 of Peckman's courses and the only time my grades were low were due to my own neglect. The information is extremely interesting. She can be blunt, but not rude. If you do your work and take notes, her courses are a breeze.
CLASS ANTH 3473 Facial Anatomy-Skull cost 295.99 plus 15% this class depends on video skills are a lg part of 3 assigns worth 40%. If you were marked on actual facial reconstruction instead of technology. The instructions for the video are limited at best example: go slow. no mention of much else. When pressed for info you are reprimanded.
