Makes lectures very interesting, uses mosic and video when you would not except and always gives hitns for the exams and tests
I just got back my midterm and I would not have done as well as i did if it was not for Prof. Taylor. Her teaching is informed and very clear and totally organized from overview/definitions to specific examples. An absolute must. I'm learning more in this course than in all of my others and Im not even a humanities major!
By far one of the best professors I have ever had at York! I appreciate how she really listens to her students and how she is willing to help them with anything and actually listens to us! I never feel stressed out in her class because she tries to make it as easy as possible on us!
You need to take a course with this prof. Really smart. Really helpful. Actually seems to care if students are learning something/what a concept!
A class I look forward to. She's a good teacher all around.
Prof. Taylor's lectures are engaging and they stay on course with the readings. Good blend of theory, analysis and example. Can be hard to hear at times, so sit at the front for any course this professor teaches...you won't regret it.
extremely intelligent professor and a wonderful person, best class ever!
tanya is an awesome prof - if you go to her after hours she will help you a lot, she cares about everyone doing well, and tries to accommodate everyone..shes not the easiest marker though but the exams for the class were simple
Excellent Professor and an excellent person. Made classes and tutorials enjoyable and was incredibly fair and helpful, one of the best profs at york
great teacher!
Tanya makes you think critically and analyse reading material in an interesting and unique way. Helpful, engaging, and approachable. Wants all students to succeed and drops a lot of hints regarding questions that will be on the exam which is why she marks papers and exams hard, but fair. Often will let you rewrite papers and give extensions.
Best prof. I have had in my three years at York so far. Her lectures are intelligent and interesting and I always looked forward to her class. Highly recommended!
You should be prepared to be critical and stimulated by her readings and lectures. She tries to make students become critical thinkers and academic writers. If you attend office hours she will provide you with all the help you need to do well and become an A student.
This it the 2nd time I'm taking EN1002. The first Prof/course was a DISASTER. I had to drop or get kicked out of my program. Prof. Taylor made complicated theory understandable & enjoyable by picking some fun texts and movies. If a course is required, the prof should be an expert in theory & a strong lecturer. DON'T TAKE 1002 WITH ANY OTHER PROF
Not an easy course, but prepares you very well for it. She has a lot of good analogies to get the student thinking, and often makes accommodations and gives very useful tips on doing assignments. Exams are straight forward but not that easy to write. She'll always make you feel more confident the week before the exams, however. She's like a friend!
Best professor at York, not an easy grader though but the way she teaches simplifies difficult topics.Intellectuals usually lack social skills as I've discovered to be the case with my other professors, but professor Taylor is he exception. Extremely helpful and accommodating to students what'best is she's highly knowledgeable..
Tanya is an accommodating, kind and intelligent prof. She always has time for students and really attempts to get you to understand all the concepts. She helped me & a few others switch tutorials when a T.A. was difficult and unfair. I have the utmost respect for her. Would definitely take again! :)
Prof is amazing. Makes you learn about modernity from a different perspective. readings are heavy, but theres a lot of online summaries -u dont even need to read them (ex. the declaration of independence) :P have Inga Untiks as ur TA, shes awesome! only 2 essays, 1 small assignment, weekly responses, and 2 exams. pretty easy for 9 credits.
I don't know why everyone likes this prof. I find her lectures overly verbose. She refuses to make simple word choices and as such her lectures are often nauseating. IMO, she tries to hard to use big words. She would be much more effective if she realized she taught at York, not Harvard.
She is a very kind and generous professor; very personable individual. Surpassed all expectations.
Prof Taylor is one of the best professors in York University. Her lectures are clear, interesting and engaging. Coming from science field would make it hard to successfully complete an English course if not for Prof Taylor who was very helpful and accommodating, giving an opportunity for each student to excel if you put effort into your work.
York U is very lucky to have a professor like her, she is caring about her students, very honest, and she gives tremendous amount of feedback on assignments, being both competent, well-informed, knowledgeable source. As long as you do the readings, show your knowledge, you will get a good grade. It was a pleasure to end my undergrad with her class
Really impressed with the online lectures. Most courses have audio or lecture notes you do as readings this one had videos that looked like something from The History Channel:) I won't way it was easy, but i definitly gained a new appreciation for SCiFi.
Great topic. Terrible prof. Meandering lectures. She dumbs things down too much and I don't know if it's because she doesn't really understand them herself. Doesn't seem to know very much about SF. Didn't know some of the big names in SF when someone asked a question in class. Would love to take this course again, if someone else taught it.
She is very approachable and no need to buy textbooks! Take the lectures with her for sure, she makes a difficult reading simplified and on the key concepts from them that you need to focus on. But be careful to chose a good TA, mine was Deborah who was a tad bit difficult regarding the grading andshe tends to go off topic.
York is privileged to have such an outstanding mind. Her lectures are well thought out and show effort in their construction. She is an ethical grader and you must put in the work. That being said she does take the time to assist students to the best of her capabilities. Very knowledgeable on the subject matter, definitely recommend this course.
I like this professor, She is the best i ever had.
Best Professor ever if you take her APHUMA 1170 9.00. Lot's of reading to do but it worth time spent in her class.
Prof. Taylor-Cherry is an exceptional thinker, speaker and lecturer. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to learn with her before I graduate this year. You must take this course.
Very nice professor, can go anytime for office hours help. Kinda unclear on course material but she helps you through it...
Great person, but really cannot teach Apocalyptic Science Fiction. Rambler, over-enunciater, boring. Covers a 5 minutes topic in 50minutes.
A+ Overall. Assignments were reasonable. Email response very fast. Readings mostly interesting. Lectures very good, pictures, clips, imp. quotes etc. made complex ideas relatable.
She seems polite and nice, but she is tough especially when it comes to grading the assignments. She explain some material well, but she does not do so in all of them. She likes students who are creative. The roble with the instructor is that some she does not give feedbacks at all even when students ask fro them. It is hard to know her expecation
Lectures are heavy, but that is really the only downfall for this prof. She's a real genius, she cares a lot and will help you all the way (if you're a good student). One of the best prof I have ever had.
she's a very smart teacher, she knows what she is talking about, although sometimes she rambles. Expectations while grading are unreasonable, no matter how hard you work your grade will still be low. Do not take this course if you are looking for a high grade.
More than I expected for a internet course. 1 lectures on videos and handout notes 2 specific grading with steps to fix mistakes 3 really good SciFi texts except Canticle 4 Liebowitz almost killed me lol
She is really good, the course is interesting and easy to do well in if you put the proper time into it. She is verrry helpful - more than other profs I've dealt with. She really helps you get the best possible mark. The books are all via online as well so you don't have to spend $$. She is very nice.
-Great proof. -Teaches well. -Lots of reading. -Lectures are generalized. -Don't miss them though. -For detailed or specific learning read- come up with questions-go to her. -Fair grader. -Flexible.
Incredibly nice, but expects a huge amount of work. Lectures are dull and go on far too long, and she usually teaches straight through the break. Terrible at returning assignments on time and updating Moodle: assignments from Oct-Dec not returned until April. No textbook, but 50-100 pages of journal articles per week.
A very good class with mix of assignments (exams, quizzzes, papers, presentation, etc.) Good feedback and excellent help with writing, research etc. It was easy to learn with this friendly and brilliant prof.
Course was heavy but enjoyable. No complaints.
This is my very first prof review. Tanya helped me improve by dissecting my essay, piece by piece, to show me how to write stronger thesises. I am so thankful to have been a student of hers. Attend tutorials!!! Dont be afraid to participate either. Her tests are really easy if 1) you study and understand the material and 2) you like essays
Terrible teacher
Very good feedback with examples from my work to show me how to rewrite it to take it to the next level.
Tanya is the BEST prof. I've had at York so far. Assignments and grades were explained clearly. The thing I liked most was getting essay help without having to go to the writing center. I totally dispute the last comment "worst TA I ever met".It was an ONLINE course! SMH
Great Prof. Tough grader but gives good feedback.
An exceptional Professor that treats Sci-Fi as an important contemporary form of literature. Brilliant on a theoretical level. Prof. Taylor-Cherry is accessible for reference letters and applications.
This was the best one out of my first courses at university. Tanya made the extra work I had to put in worth it. She helped me to make the jump from high school to undergrad and be a better writer.
This Prof ticks a lot of boxes. On the academic side, her explanations and feedback were specific and helpful. On the interaction side, she was pleasant and very encouraging. Overall, a standout in my two years at York.
I was recommended to take a course with this prof. Excellent
Very appointed with the results.
Amazing Prof! I always look forward to this class.
Terrible to say the least.
I learned a lot about writing and analysis in a very short time. I would take any course Prof Taylor teaches.
Prof. Taylor was the ONLY prof (3 courses on strike) to explain how I could finish the course and be concerned about loosing months and months of my life.
Best Prof ever!
Very good course. Excellent Prof.
I came to university to have experiences like I have had in Prof. Taylor's class. Lectures are interesting and invite interaction. She pays close attention to your work and always tries to make you work harder.
I learned my lesson.
A very helpful and patient instructor. Knows the material inside out and makes it interesting
Wonderful being, reinvigorates the whole purpose of why we learn. Truly exceptional!!! Love her to bits xxx
I can't say enough about this excellent Prof. I would take any course she is teaching in a heart beat.
Professor Taylor-Cherry is the best TA Ive had at York, I valued her feedback so much. This is a Professor (or TA) that sincerely cares about her students and their potential. She gives specific feedback on how to better your essay writing skills. Go to office hours with a draft of your essay and she will look over it with you and give feedback.
I would not have had a *breakthrough* in my critical thinking without Professor Taylor. She is patient and pushed me to keep trying until I got it. Overall A++++++
I wish I had taken a course with this amazing prof. in 1st year. Recommend.
I would have dropped out of school without this amazing prof's help. In this day in age there are'nt enough teachers who care about students as people.
Unbelievable. Literally did not mark anything except the first assignment. All of us went into the FINAL EXAM without receiving midterm or any other grades or feedback. Did not post any lecture slides after the midterm either; go to class and record everything or tough luck. Does not even use the microphone properly. Would give her -5 if I could.
Didnt mark anything the entire semester, dont take her for the tutorials, she just wastes your time. She marked the first assignment really tough, cant say for the rest of the assignments/tests since she didn't mark anything else. The readings are boring and long, you have to read dozens of pages of old texts just to get one or two relevant quotes
I can't say enough good things about this course and Prof Taylor. If you put in the work, you will not be disappointed.
I am completely satisfied with this professor and this course. It was organized, expectations were clear. No unnecessary costs for books and there were random bonus mark chances if you show up and participate or do extra work. It was a solid learning experience.
Prof. Taylor is a brilliant and responsible academic. This course was inclusive and brought gender, race, children, class and world history into the discussion. Respect..
I have deeply regretted from taking the class with the instructor.
Excellent. Best Professor and course at York by far.
Dr. Taylor communicates materials clearly and knows the material with thouroughness. If you do the readings and pay attention the tests and essays are simple.
Hands down, the best professor at York
this was the very first class that i was taken at york. She helped me a lot w different kinda subject. her lectures was AMAZING. despite, if you love modern times, art and wondering that how world became to be like this you really have to listen to her. SHE IS THE BEST FOR SURE!!!
Professor Tanya was very helpful with my writing and helped me to organize my thinking into careful arguments. I am very thankful to work with her.
I took EN 2172 during the summer, initially expecting it to be a bird course. It was not, there is a lot of reading to do, 2 essays to write, and a final. But Prof Taylor was incredibly sweet. She spent extra time w me, allowing me to improve my writing. She truly cares for her students, and is easily one of the best profs at York.
Hand's down the BEST online course I've taken. Prof Taylor is a real gem.
This is a REAL course with 2 essays, quizzes, forms and final exam. Really appreciated all the ways Prof. Taylor went beyond the Call of Duty with extra online office times, special mini-lectures for essays and HQ lecture podcasts. If you read and ask for feedback you will do well. Weird not ever getting to meet her irl tho!
Very disappointed with the way in which my essay was graded albeit meeting the expectations of the instructor.
She pushes you to do the work, even though it gets more complex every assignment. If you just take the initiative to focus on the readings, ask questions, and complete the work, then you could expect great results from your pieces. Definitely one of my best professors I had last year.
Best course and best Prof at York in my opinion.
Not suitable instructor and not helpful.
Professor Taylor is understanding and hilarious. I took her EN 2172. She has a lovely and clear voice on her audio recordings, and they were all very professionally eddied. She is accessible outside her class, and when I had an anxiety problem, she was there to help me out. No buying books, all readings were online. 12/10 would take again.
From my perspective as a 4th y. student who took this 1000 course to graduate, Tanya ranks as the best prof. in my undergrad. Do yourself a favor and take a course with Prof Taylor.
Excellent prof and course. I would take another course with her again. I find her lectures interesting and helpful.
I would not recommend to anyone because she tough marker and two face.
Had her as a TA for Prof Paolucci's EN1001. The worst person to mark your papers. She points out mistakes based on her own opinions and when you go to her for help, she keeps you for hours and talks about random stuff that's not useful at all. Then she marks you based on her own subjective understanding of the material. Talks. Way. Too. Much.
A very hard marker. In addition, the instructors does not bother returning essays to students.
One of the worst profs Ive experienced at York. Does not respond to emails, and does not give back marks until end of the year. She expects you to be fully knowledgeable about the Rennaisance before you enroll in the class. Her marks are biased and based on her own subjective opinion. She rambles on random stuff in lectures, will not learn anything
ATTEND LECTURES, her slides on their own are so vague and uploaded like 2 weeks after. Her midterm expectations caused most of the class to fail, even TAs was surprised. Maybe its just me being hard-headed, but her expectations for making connections with the course material are so extra. Her exam was after the exam period ended. Just be careful.
She is brilliant! This course was a 9 credit course packed into one term and she made it seamless and stressless. She is extremely articulate, funny and caring. Don't miss her lectures if you want to do well in this course. She is a great person to bounce off your thesis ideas or any concepts that you don't understand.
She is a great prof and you will learn a lot from her if you want to. She is extremely intelligent and believes in students' abilities. First year and I learned so much from that I brought to my other classes. My favourite prof so far.
Beware this professor. She grades very very tough. I was so surprised at my grade I made an appeal and was able to raise my mark but all in all, not worth it for the work you put it. Lectures were pretty good and she's a lovely person but there were spelling mistakes on the slides and I didn't get my grades until way after the exam.
So... I took this course as a 4th-year honours student because I needed the gen ed. Honestly, you can get through this course without doing any of the readings. BUT this course is geared toward 1st years. There is a whole section on how to write a paper, doing quizzes from the SPARK module. She wants to see your paper outline. it is SO boring.
THE WORST PROF. RUN DONT WALK AWAY. I have been waiting 15 days for an email back from her to schedule a meeting to go over her comments on an assignment that was the outline of my paper - I literally have to write my final paper without any guidance from her. Save your money or take another course. Gross neglect by this Prof of her students.
Professor Taylor is very responsive and GENUINELY cares about her students. I had to take this class in order to fulfil my degree requirements, but I would most definitely take one of her classes again!
Excellent prof and course. Quizzes and assignments avail to bump up your grade.
I was really interested in this class and heard good thing but realized later that all the positive things I'd heard were for another prof's version of this course. Tanya's version is way too simplistic. Felt like High School not university. Planet of the Apes? Fun movie but I expected to be challenged by this course and I wasn't.
It was quite an experience. Excellent prof. A plus.
Conscientious and brilliant. I regard this course as a standout in my 3yrs.
This is organized. it was good for studying in a different timezone. All things were online to do at my pace. Thank you proff, youre the best!
The feedback that Prof. Taylor gives on assignments and drafts made it easy to improve my writing and my understanding of the more complex ideas in the course.
This was an exceptional course that presented apocalyptic fiction in a surprising and interesting way. Very relevant to current events.
I took this course with Prof Taylor, and I'll admit it was the most difficult course of my undergrad. But what mattered is that I was constantly trying to jump into discussions and take part, as well as showing up to her office hours. Professor Taylor was always understanding and despite being a failure in her class she still gave me a decent grade
Prof. Taylor is a good professor. I had taken HUMA1170 and it was a VERY heavy content course. However, Prof. Taylor did a good job in teaching it. I was clueless majority of the time because the readings sometimes got confusing (there was A LOT). She still ensured success for her students, great feedback & bonus marks! Grades paper late though.
Extremely hard to succeed in her class even when meeting her expectations. DO YOUR SELF A FAVOUR: AVOID TAKING COURSES WITH INSTRUCTOR.
If you like lectures that leave you clueless and feeling like nothing was explained clearly at all, then take this class. You need to have a BA in humanities and history before you even take the class. Very tough grader considering it's a first-year class during a pandemic.
vague lecture material and tough marker.
Few courses have changed my life but this course did. Professor Taylor is inspirational. It was a lot of reading but worth it. Attend class, participate, show genuine interest and you will succeed.
This prof has no idea how to mark because there were many flaws in her editing and I dont believe she marks fairly at all. I agree with the others that she does not show any sign of empathy towards her students and is quick to dismiss students learning needs. Why be a prof if you dont show any sign of positivity towards your students?? Shame.
As someone who gets 90s and As in every course, I could not tell you one thing I have grasped fully from this prof /class. The effort is there- the proper instruction is not. Wish I could go back and choose a different huma course. Tough grader is an understatement
She's very eloquent and descriptive, but prepare to read dozens of pages of REQUIRED readings every week and discussion forums. She grades papers way too strictly, I've noticed. She also doesn't seem accessible to students who aren't aware of academic language - feels a bit elitist. Students aren't dumb, but we require accessible learning.
Tough marker. Too strict with grading criteria and writing style, especially for a FIRST-YEAR course
AVOID this course with this prof at all costs. Terribly strict criteria, an insane amount of text referencing required within assignments (especially for a 1st-year course), strict when marking subjective essays, very vague lecture information, and will criticize everyone's "essay-style" if it doesn't line up with her personal standards.
Prof Taylor is one of my favourite professors at York. I was nervous doing a 9.00 credit Humanities course, though the work is DENSE, the information within the lectures and readings are insightful and applicable to many other courses, it also helps to understand "real-life" too. Taylor is so accommodating and is a sincere and intelligent prof.
She is the best
Tanya is gold! Best prof I had throughout my 4 years at York.
Unless you are interested in the concept of modernity, do not take HUMA 1170. This professor is very slow in her marking and very slow in her email response. YOU WOULD NEED TO READ AND CITE A LOT OF SOURCES (at least 15) when attempting any assignment. She is very unclear in her marking criteria for participation. Take another professor instead
Professor Taylor taught my first university class ever and I could not ask for a better experience. I loved every single lecture, they literally blew my mind. She was happy to help students even when she got sick for two weeks, and I appreciated that so much. She's not a hard marker and is very accommodating as a tutorial leader.
Professor Taylor is an extremely bright and knowledgeable professor that runs amazing and interactive tutorials/lectures. She is very friendly, approachable, helpful and is willing to accommodate students with things like generous assignment extensions and extra help outside of class. I highly recommend her to any student looking for a HUMA course
She is one of the best professors at York! HUMA1170 is only difficult if you don't make an effort. In order to succeed in this course, you have to do the weekly readings and attend the lectures. Some of the readings were pretty long but would be useful during the midterm and exam. She would even move classes to online if the weather was bad.
This course was organized and set up in advance which I appreciated as a 4tr student taking this class to graduate. All I can say is that I wish I had known about this course back in my first year. Excellent and informed Prof.
More like a grade school teacher than a uni prof. Class inundated with readings, especially considering it's an introductory course. An unsympathetic, self involved prof.
This course can seem overwhelming at first, but keep up with your readings and attend for bonus marks. Tanya offers rewrites and will be flexible with deadlines. This is a good course and a great prof.
A solid, interesting and thoughtful course and Prof. No complaints.
I'm not a HUMA student (Kine) and needed a Gen Ed. I had NO interest in the subject and took this course b/c it was the only one that fit my schedule. Loved it! Not saying it way easy but if I can get a B so can you.
Tanya Taylor was the most unreasonable professor I've ever had. Although huma 4730 is supposed to be a course that people who have no prior knowledge in the subject can take, students are marked as if they should have the same knowledge in the subject as Tanya does. She takes months to mark assignments and is very unreasonable with her marking.
