I absolutely loved this teacher! She works really hard at explaining everything and she has powerpoint that have all of the information in detail if you get lost. she even includes videos to help. The homework is required but easy because all of the answers can be found on the slides. Tests are really thought provoking, but do-able.
Great class overall. I recommend her for this class.
Tanya really helped me realize that I want to make a career out of biology! I loved her passion for the subject and her tests were very easy! Take her class if you have the option!
Excellent! Teacher is very clear and helpful. She is always at office hours and will keep going over a section until you understand. The homework is great. If you understand the homework and go to test reviews you will do fine.
She was OK. I liked her enthusiasm and she genuinely wants you to succeed. my only complaint is that she tests on very specific and often arbitrary material which is a bit frustrating because she covers so much material. I got an A in the class which i am happy about. she, as a professor, is great. just the tests are frustrating.
You feel as though you are in elementary school again, not because she is easy but because she teaches like that. Her homework is ridiculous! It is such busy work and there is so much of it. It literally feels like she gives you the homework because she thinks you have no other classes. Loads of busy work! Also rushes through power points.
Fun and really applied to the modern world. This class is great if you are hoping to learn basics and spend most of the time on how the information relates to real world issues that are current. There is no book and rather than emphasize testing we read and discuss information. Super fun.
She seemed excited to be teaching, and made real world applications that connected with the material. She wasn't overly responsive to emails, but she was helpful during office hours.
This class was not an easy class. She gave out ridiculous amounts of homework. Her TA's were harsh graders. Her exams were on everything she went over, and you had to get all the little details to get the points. The thing I disliked the most was how fast she went over the slides and the fact that she put them online after class was over. She helpful
Vickers is a great professor. She always includes interesting examples in her lectures. She requires a few homework assignments to be turned in, which help prepare you for the exams. The exams test you on what she emphasizes in class and the homework. My only complaint is that you are expected to attend class, as clicker questions are always given.
Vickers is an awesome teacher! Her class is not hard, you just have to work hard in it! All your hard work pays off though. She is open to help with anything during office hours and provides the most amazing t.a.'s to help. All the resources are there to do well! Take her class!
Awful teacher--the required text (which she wrote HERSELF) says one thing, she preaches another thing in class, and her lecture slides are a third thing entirely. I'm sure she gets what she's talking about, but she's the worst at teaching it.
She treats you like a child, and is very rude at times. She is more than willing to help, although if you don't get it she often gets frustrated. Also, homework load is absolutely ridiculous it's like she thinks you have no other classes.
She is the most unorganized professor i have ever had the displeasure of working with. All the content for the class is posted online but its very hard to find out whats due and its even harder to find the actual assignment online.
She treats students like they're children a lot of the time, but she does spoon-feed you information. Her tests are fair, but be prepared to put some work in. On the other hand, the TAs grade her tests, and some of them are ridiculous (-2 points for organization, when the teacher couldn't draw the diagram right the first time? REALLY?)
Tanya made her lectures interesting by adding in real world applications and relevant news stories. The material isn't too difficult and as long as you go to class and turn in assignments it's not hard to get a good grade. She is very helpful during office hours if you are confused about any information from lecture, so are the TAs.
Super interesting and relevant class. The class was focused on current issues so there was a lot of reading but the level of the science content was definitely geared toward non-science majors.
I took 1210 in spring of 2012. Great class and really well organized. I liked the use of stories and history to link concepts. It helped everyone remember and made things really relevant. I felt well prepared for Cell Bio!
She does not post lecture slides online like all other professors do. This makes the class 10 times harder. She skips through 60+ slides each class period and expect you to write down everything she says as well as all the notes within a very short time frame. She jumps and skips around and puts skipped materials on test.
Professor Vickers seemed knowledgeable about Biology. She goes way too fast through her lecture slides and it is impossible to keep up. Her tests are worth 64% of our grade, and are some of the hardest tests I've ever taken. She covers too much information over such a short period of time. Basically, I hated this class and do not recommend Vickers.
Tanya cares about her students more than any other professor I know. She is always available to help and hires great TA's who have a lot of availability to help tutor. Students who don't do well in this course are those who aren't willing to study, and are just plain lazy. The content is interesting and great for non-science majors.
Biol 1010 was a lot of fun and an easy A if you went to class and did the work. 1010 was the best science class ever! We learned really cool modern stuff, debated issues & talked with working scientists. Vickers presented the material so it related to business, medicine, & environment. Highly recommend 1010 but definitely plan on going to class!
1010 is different from a regular science class. I liked that exams were a small part of our grade & the class was super interactive. We learned from visiting U scientists, read news reports & worked on one project . Lots of fun discussions & a great way to meet other students. I learned so much! Nice fit for non-science majors, fun class!
Fantastic class! Well organized with plenty of support. I really liked the stories that related basic biology to the real world and helped us connect concepts, have you insight into medicine and real environmental issues. Class, discussions and problem sets really prepare you for exams. I had vickers for 1010 too (favorite class). Great instructor!
She is great at offering test reviews and additional TA hours, but her tests are ridiculous. A couple TAs grade very hard. I am an A student and felt completely prepared for the tests but would get a low B or high C every time.
Prof is really willing to help students. We read mainstream information from the news & there is no text. She taught enough basic bio so that you can understand current issues but not all the details from high school bio. Assignments are interesting & tests are easy if you work through practice problems. Loved it! Super unique way to learn science.
Really interesting, not at all what I expected from a science class. I am hooked on documentaries and reading the New York Times science section after this class. Take the class if you are interested in biology but want to get away from all the details included in a biology textbook. Makes you think.
I really liked that attending Discussions could be used to lower the value of your exams. TAs were super smart, organized, fair & really good looking too! There is a lot to learn in a semester & the instructor does a great job making connections with real world issues, which helped me stay interested. Plan on attending class, missing makes it hard.
Biology 1010 is really different from any science class I have ever had. What we learn is really relevant. In the past 2 weeks we learned about bacteria & viruses. I did not understand antibiotic resistance & now I do. Ebola is all over the news so we learned a lot about viruses and Ebola.
Best science class ever. The projects are graded fairly and there is tons of help if you need it. I really like all of the news videos and current information we hear about in class. It is pretty cool.
I really liked Tanya's lectures. She made things interesting by connecting information to current events & examples. Discussions were super helpful & prepare you for exams. There's a discussion worksheet with practice problems & terms each week. If you go to 8 discussions the weight of your exam is lowered 10%. I learned a lot but it was hard work
Awesome class. I am really glad that I took this class. It is definitely going to help with my business major. This is the biology that is cool and is stuff we hear about in the news. Easy 'A' if you go to class and do the assignments. The assignments are mostly readings and some problem solving. Open note quizzes makes things a lot less stressful.
1210 is fast paced and not easy. I hated high school biology but Tanya tells stories that make the information more relatable. The class is long and 7:30am was not my favorite but it was a super interesting biology class. Her tests are fair and not too hard if you go to discussion and do the practice problems. Discussion and TAs are great!
I used the lecture outlines to take notes and that helped. The study questions and discussions were a must for the exams. I liked that you can have the value of your exams lowered if you participate in discussion. Waking up for an early class is the hardest part. She really cares about the students. The class is not too hard if you put the time in.
Take 1010 for the U science requirement. I am a sophomore and this was my favorite class so far! The science is easy and the lectures are really interesting. Easy to get an A if you go to class. There are different types of assignments and not any tests. I like that you actually get to meet other students in this class.
Fun class. No books. You read what is in the news. I discovered NPR and Radio Lab. I wish there were more classes like this. I learned really useful stuff.
Tanya is really nice and answers emails super fast. The class is cool, nothing like high school biology. This is the only class I have taken where I actually made some friends. I am thinking about taking 1210 from her.
Best biology class ever! I wish there were more classes like this one. There is no text so you learn about what is really happening in medicine and in the environment. We had really cool guest speakers. I liked the reading assignments.
I am in 1210 now. The class is super organized and there are a lot of different ways to earn points. I really like that we have lecture outlines to take notes. So far, really great class and I like the content.
Class newspapers are really cool and super interesting. I like that we have an assignment like this instead of exams. The quizzes or short and not hard if you keep up. Nothing like high school biology. Tanya and TAs offer lots of times to get help with questions or on the paper. They definitely like the class as much as the students.
This was the absolute worst class I have taken, and I am currently a junior. She is always running behind and going quickly through slides. She doesn't give you anytime to get the information down. People ask questions in class and she says "I'm not going to answer that." She expects you to have a biology background. Don't take this class!
Taking 1210 for 2 hours at 7:30 is hard. Lecture outlines help with notes a lot & discussion worksheets really help with problem solving. 1210 is what I expected. There's a lot of support in Tanya's class & her lectures easy to follow. I really like that there is some current biology and stories mixed in.
The discussion worksheets really prepare you for exams. Lectures are long (2 hour class) but things get really interesting after the first exam. I really like the videos posted on canvas each week and that there are problem solving questions during lecture. Definitely my hardest class but guessing cell & genetics will be harder. Pre-med.
Tanya's class is not one for an easy A, but if you want to actually learn the material it's a phenomenal class. It's fast paced, but she spends lots of time in office hours and tutoring (which are what kept my A's high A's). Tanya actually cares about teaching the class and that learning actually happens, which is rare for a 1000 level class.
Finally a chance to take a science class that covers stuff that matters. Rad class, some crazy real world stuff, really liked the guest lectures.
Tanya has amazing lecture notes and she makes it so easy to follow along during lectures. The tests are not the easiest, but if you study the modules that she puts up for you on canvas then you will be fine. She adds a lot of videos on there that are very helpful and the discussions that the TA's host are very helpful as well. Fun class!!!
Vickers is a good professor, but her tests are TOUGH, and they make up the vast majority of your grade. Her lectures are informative, but TAKE GOOD NOTES. There is no such thing as too much detail in this class. Be prepared to study, and do not underestimate the content in this course. Study. And study a lot.
Tanya was a good professor. However, she moved very fast in class. She was very enthusiastic about what she taught though. Her exams were long and hard. This class required a lot of dedication to homework and lectures. She gives quizzes everyday in class. It was a tough class, but Tanya was very good to work with.
Worst Biology class I have ever taken. Tanya expects all the learning to be done during tutoring and office hours, and if you can't go to those, too bad for you. She is extremely unhelpful, extremely rude, and allows her political views to taint the science. I have learned no science in her class, only what my political views should be.
I love biology, but I did not love this class. The class structure made it hard for me to learn! Tanya is a great professor, but she tends to choose favorites and gets upset when nobody is going to office hours.
Great class & made me really like science. She posted short news readings & outlines every week. Homework help (tutoring) is there if you need it. I could have had perfect homework scores but only figured out tutoring at the end of the semester. Your grade is spread out, so tests are not the only thing! Easy A or B. Guest speakers were awesome!
This professor really cares. She called me when I missed the final and our last assignment. I made a lot of friends in this class during small group discussions. i liked learning about wolves, problems with antibiotics and information about Ebola. I am a business major and there were lots of connections made that make me happy I chose this class.
I was never bored in this class! I wish there was another science class like this one on campus. This class made me like science and the professor was enthusiastic and genuinely likes teaching. Not hard but you do have to go to class, do the reading and assignments.
I am not into science at all, but this was my favorite class I've taken at the U so far. Tanya teaches you how to interpret and understand what's going on in the scientific community today, using real world, applicable examples. The class seems confusing and like a lot of work at first but it's fine once you figure out how her system. She's great!
This is my first semester and 1010 is my favorite class! I like that it is about current stuff. You get to meet people in the class and everything is about what is actually happening in the news and world.
Pretty fun class and not too hard. She likes getting students involved in talking about issues that relate to science. I am learning a lot.
Love this class so much that I am thinking about majoring in biology and going to nursing school. So much of what you learn is in the news. I am thinking about taking biology 1210 with Tanya this spring. She really cares about her students!
Not what I expected from a science class at all. It's not about the boring stuff in a biology book and it's not too hard. There are regular small assignments, so the tests are the only thing. Never thought I would want to take more biology, but I do. Learned a lot!
Tanya is a great teacher and is very passionate about the subject. She and her TAs provide assistance if you need it but it's always outside of class. You have to schedule a meeting with her if you want to see what you missed on a test, as she doesn't give them back. Lectures nearly every day and some guest speakers, values students' opinions.
This is class takes a lot of time and attention. She assigns so many different things and it is difficult to keep track of it all.
Bio 1010 with Vickers was one of my favorite classes that I've taken at the University of Utah. She's hilarious, has amazing lectures, and provides help when it's necessary. The grading can be a bit strict sometimes but the assignments are easy and the lectures are entertaining and easy to follow.
Professor Vickers is a good professor. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed. This is a very hard class through be prepared to study a lot and make sure you go to class because it is hard to catch back up if a lecture is missed.
I wish my high school class was this cool. Everything we learn is something you can also hear about in the news. Tanya is super nice. The class is not hard.
Vickers loves biology and is very enthusiastic about learning and teaching. The TA's were also super helpful and they all work together on a regular basis to make sure they're on the same page. You do need to study for the tests but it is not a difficult class.
Tanya does lots of lectures with notes, and clicker quizzes. It's really good to participate. You will learn and keep up if you review the notes and things she posts on canvas. This class is totally do-able. She is awesome- and the TA's are helpful as well.
Professor Vickers was great, her class covered a lot of interesting material that is important in modern science. It was fun to learn about current topics and the class was extremely easy, all you have to do is show up to get a good grade. I just wasn't the biggest fan of the guest lectures toward the end of the semester.
I have to say Tanya is one of the most understanding professors out there. If you need help with anything she is there. Enjoyed her very much. If your going to take a BIO 1010 at the U I recommend her.
Took Tanya for "Bio in the 21st Century" course. Good class to tackle two gen ed credits at once. Grading is based mainly off exams and newspaper assignments so take advantage of points she gives for participation, quizzes, and guest speakers. Not much homework but she expects you to know a ton for exams.
Tanya really cares about her students and did an amazing job making things less stressful during corona. The class was super fun and interesting and you even get to meet other students. I learned so much and didn't mind going! Pretty easy class. The COVID, gender, and race topics were amazing.
Tanyas class was very difficult to connect to. Her topics were interesting, but I found myself confused after every lecture and ended up teaching most of the material to myself. She teaches very surface-level information but quizzes on deeper knowledge. She expects you to attend all TA sessions but for working students its not practical.
Professor Vickers is so kind and really tries to make the lectures entertaining. She is passionate about what she teaches and is very inclusive. The work you do is not too hard and she offers sufficient extra credit opportunities.
If you need to take Biology take it with her. Her class is not hard and she will help you if you ever need help! She was a really awesome professor I love her so much!!!
Tanya is a good teacher, but she gives way too much homework and expects us to know a lot about biology already which obviously not everyone does, considering this is a beginners class. Also, she starts with participation questions right at the start of class which sucks! She gives people about 3 minutes to get to class online.
She talks too much, you don't know what is necessary to know or whether she's going off on a tangent. Also, she goes through the slides too quickly, not even giving you time to read all of the information on the slide let alone write it down. Quiz questions are worded bad and sometimes cover things she didn't even talk about.
The information is super interesting and has helped me like science. Class is not all lecture. There's class time for homework and to get help. The videos she adds with lecture make it fun and I love not having a book. No final and only 5 quizzes! I only hear good things about this professor and class from my friends, which is why i took it.
Do not expect this one to be a ditto if you've already taken a couple of bio courses (speaking from experience). The hardest part had to do with the fact that the prof likely doesn't review how difficult something is before assigning it. Lots of busywork for an elective class.
I never got anything out of science classes in high school and thought this class was super interesting. You aren't just relying on big tests for your grade too, a plus as long as you go to class. If you don't go to class, you'll end up spending more time catching up since there isn't a book. The classes aren't just long boring lectures.
This class feels exactly like a high school class, complete with harsh grading on attendance and being talked down to. Won't let you Zoom in unless you have proof of a positive Covid test (and try getting one in time now that the state has stopped free testing!!) She does not cover half of what is on the quizzes in class. Do not take this class!
Great class. Professor Vickers is organized and a really great teacher, my favorite U class so far!
Professor Vickers is nice and gives interesting lectures. The final is optional, and you're allowed to have a notes sheet on every quiz. The biggest issue I had was there were lots of busywork assignments that turned into homework, and you have to log onto Zoom TA meetings essentially weekly if you want help on assignments.
We had a lot of rowdy racist & sexist kids when I took this class on Zoom, and Tanya + the TAs shut them down pretty quickly. She had a great grasp on incorporating diversity into a historically discriminatory field, and she always made time for questions and thought-provoking discussions. Material was mostly a review from freshman bio.
I took this course as an easy gen-ed but that is not what it was. The course was very unorganized and did not follow any curriculum. The TA's were very tough graders from the start. Quizzes are hard and locked after so you do not get to see what you missed or what you're not understanding. Tanya was always nice but I did not enjoy the course.
DO NOT take this class if you are a biology major, it will be pulling teeth painful. Because it is a DV Gen Ed, many of the concepts are simplified so far that they are inaccurate. However, Tanya is very supportive and offers so much extra help with the course and she is very approachable.
I loved learning about biology in this class. However, assignments are consistently assigned and made due the day of, with absolutely no indication in the syllabus of when this will happen. You have time in class to get started, but often it's not enough. Very frustrating when you have shit to do later that day.
The class heavily depends on tests that are not simple and get graded toughly. The TAs were phenomenal however at preparing us for the tests and the lectures were very interesting. I did not like how I had to pay for iclicker and was given assignments at the end of class to finish that day. Way harder than a 1010 class should be.
This class was ok. While Prof. Vickers is without a doubt passionate, I almost felt disconnected to her and felt more appreciative for what the TAs had taught me. Grading on quizzes takes forever. Workload is generally small. Overall still a cool class with interesting material. I would strongly recommend going to discussions!
Tanya is a fine professor. She's good at teaching but sometimes goes off on long tangents. The material of BIO 1010 however is so dull it makes the class painful to get through. The class is designed for someone who's never taken a science class so that some of the material is so dumbed down that it has become incorrect. Painful to get through clas
Overall this class was not a bad course. Needed a simple course to fulfill some GE requirements and that was not this course. Tanya is great, but the course is so test-heavy. Don't do well on an exam? Your grade will continue to suffer for the rest of the semester. It depends if you get harsh TA's and if your schedule works with their discussions.
The first thing I would recommend if you are taking the class is find the times and date that work best for you to attend the TA discussions every week. These are the key to passing the class with a high grade! While professor Vickers is a kind and enjoyable person her lectures tend to fall short in getting the information across by her rambling.
