I could barely understand this teacher and unless you speak chinnese don't take this class. BYOI (bring your own interpreter). Upon completing the class go to Addmissions and ask for foreign language credit.
Good Mathematician... Terrible teacher. Knows his stuff but can't communicate it worth crap. If you don't have a natural mind for math... get a tutuor, or a translator. Take some english lessons Tao
Tao did a great job in my class he is a little hard to understand but if u bare with him and GET OVER his language disability he is a GREAT teacher!!!!
An easy professor, enjoys his work. Yes he has a heavy accent, big deal. Pay attention to the work and the examples he gives. He may be intimidating for people inexperienced in Math or if you have difficulty with accents, but he's a good teacher.
the worst teacher ever. He is so hard to understand. I worked my tail off and he gave me a D.
made things easy. great test grader...a ton of partial credit. Easier than I thought he'd be.

Prof. Guo is a fair and good teacher. I am terrible at math in general. I earned a 'B' in his class. He does have an accent, but if you just listen with an open mind, it disappears. I appreciated all the warnings he gave as to what to watch out for.
I couln't understand a word he siad, not only that there were severall times he confused himself.
Hard to Understand sometimes, but tries his best to explain and help. Will not move to next topic until almost everyone understands the lesson. Makes up in Grading what he lacks in understandability. Good guy overall.
could not understand him! CONFUSING!!!! I had to with draw and the following semester took with Hesser got an A!!!
Does not speak English well. Hard to understand.
Can you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?
Very thorough professor. His accent disappears if you listen closely. He is very helpful and pretty cool if you get to know him.
Yes, the man has an accent and it is difficult to understand, but listen to him for a couple periods without whining about it and it does lighten up a bit. Great teacher, test come straight from the homework assignments (which must be turned in). Dont let his accent keep you from his classes!!

Everyone drops, he knows his stuff, but explaining it is another story!
I had a lot of trouble understanding him. I dropped after the first class. That accent would drive me nuts all semester. Im sure he is a great guy, I just coudnt deal with the thick accent.
His accent is very thick, but overall he's a great teacher. The only bad thing is he jumps into problems without first going over what we're supposed to do. But the strategy is a good one. He keeps you on your toes.
Dude, he is easy to understand if you have him for a month. And he really knows what hes talking about. Math is just to hard for you guys!!! j/k

Hes a good teacher..just took a little while to get use to his accent. Other than that...good and helpful.
does not speak english
Ok, hes like the only teacher that lets u use a two side paper of notes for a test. And he gives u homework which he just looks over and thats an easy A. The test are easy because he picks the easiest problems to solve. So, if you get F's on test and get A's on homework you'll pass with a C. That what happenend to my friend.
He has a thick accent which can be hard to understand at times but he really knows his stuff and will help you as much as you need. I really enjoyed this class and would take from him again. You know what to expect on tests from homework so they are pretty easy.
i couldnt understand him not only does he talk very fast but he has a stong chinese acent and sometimes uses math symbols they only use in china he eventually cathches himself but he can be very confusing but he tries hard and seems very knoledgeble

I cannot understand him what so ever. He has a very thick accent and we cannot communicate. I don't love math but I don't hate it but I hate going to this class. I only go because he gives an extra 10 points if we attend everyday. I've been teaching my self this course and it really sucks. Unless you are a brainiac don't take this teacher for math!
This professor is soo confusing. I do not understand him at all. He did not answer questions very well.
Hard to understand at first, but you get used to him after a while. Allows use of book during tests which helps a lot.
Prof Guo is very interested in student learning. If you do your part by doing the homework probs and reading a little of the text you can have some great conversations with him. I learned an immense amount of info from him.
tests had way too many problems for only 45 minutes! no one finishes! plus he does not curve
Cant understand. heavy Chinese accent. If you don't teach yourself, you will fail
It's hard to understand his accent at first but you get used to it. The final counts for too much of your grade, and he's not the best teacher. He's definately not the best teacher but he's not as bad as some of the teachers at RVC.
Its impossible to understand him through his thick accent. Class was boring at best.
Terrible class and teacher. I would not recommend taking him.. if you don't try and teach yourself the material, you might as well drop that class. I do somewhat like that he is lenient on tests. If you have no clue how to do the problem and you show your work, you'll get some credit for it instead of it all being marked wrong.
The accent is somewhat hard to overcomme very good profesor, on a test he will not grade an entire problem off if you miss one or to things on that problem so the good whieghs out the bad, 4/5 he encourages higher learning and is ready to help i dont know its a math thing. very word problem orientated but overal good
Knows his mathematics. Tries very hard to make sure everyone understands. Thick accent, but you get used to it. Likes to joke around every once in a while to give your mind a break. Hard working and quality teacher.
cant understand him. He knows what hes talking about but it is so hard to understand what he is saying that i would avoid him if you can
if you have a good fundation, take him! he gives extra credit for everything, he tries to help you out if you seem interested in the class! accent is really really hard to get used to, atleast 2 weeks, if your algebra is weak already, for get about it!
Just do the homework and participate..it gets hard at times and during test he will give points for any scribbling you have done even if it has nothing to do with the question.
Can't understand a word he says. Does not make class interesting which makes it hard to pay attention. If you do not have an extremely strong background in math, do not take this course because you will end up having to teach yourself the material. It was the first 'F' I have ever recieved in my life.
While he knows his mathematics, he cannot explain it in clear english which makes the class EXTREMELY difficult. While he tries to be very helpful the help he offers is impossible to understand. I have been a honor roll student and his class was the first poor grade I received.
Good professor, knows calc like the back of his hand. A little hard to understand, but after a while it's no problem(its math so you don't need to be a brilliant orator as long as your mathematical explanations are sound). MTH 135 is a really hard class in and of iself so its a lot of work no matter who you have- but I would recomment him.
He's the best math teacher I ever had. He really tries to help you understand the material with so many different approaches to the topics and concepts. It's such a shame that people blame their grades on his accent--get over it. It is NOT hard to understand him. He's amazing. I'm so glad I didn't take anyone else for Calculus. I recommend him!!!
Very passionate, and explains things in such an easy way. His goal is not too make things impossible, but to ensure you learn how to use the material, hence he gives you access to all the formulas: the class isn't about memorizing, it's about knowing how to use it all. I highly recommend him, especially over the other Trig professor
Great teacher. Very helpful.
I was afraid of taking with Guo at first. I heard about his accent from my Calculus I teacher as well as the comments on here--NOT AN ISSUE. I adjusted the first day. He's clear about what he expects: tells you past students' mistakes to try to help you avoid making the same ones. Not everyone listened; I did! Very, very good, & awesome sayings!
Does NOT grade assignments properly (constantly had to point out that he'd skipped problems when grading my HW). Also, I tried going to office hrs. once. The MINUTE they where over. Like, 45 seconds later, he kicked me out and told me he had to eat lunch. So much for caring about his students. Marks off for getting right answer but not "his way"
Tough to understand, his accent is extremely thick, he makes a lot of jokes that no one really understands. Seems to know his stuff sometimes but other times he just fails to explain things, ill probably fail his class, worst math grade in a long time.
Who cares about the accent? If you follow his teaching & examples, you'll do just fine. There maybe more homework problems but that's how you memorize. He also lets you use cheat sheet on certain tests & explains pretty well with example problems.
Every test was open book. Before class he allowed us to ask questions on our homework assignments. If you procrastinate you may have some trouble because he assigns all of the homework at the beginning of a section and all of it is to be turned in at the beginning of the test (although homework is only work about 10 points: tests are 100-200). =]
You can understand him some what till he turns towards the board then its over with nothing he says sounds like english
Cannot understand a word he says. Does not provide proper instruction in chapters. Algebra is one of my favorite subjects and I dread his class everyday and walk out angry. Avoid is possible
Man's brilliant, but a HORRIBLE teacher. I've never seen a class where, despite being allowed use of your book on tests, MOST PEOPLE FAIL. I got an A in Calc 1 with Dr. Gunsul, but just took a W to avoid a D in 2 with Mr. Guo. If this man where the only math teacher at RVC, I would take math somewhere else, and transfer it in. RUN.
Mr. Guo is a fantastic teacher. He does have an accent which makes him somewhat difficult to understand, especially if he speaks softly, as he often does. But his examples are good, he explains everything thoroughly, and he is more then willing to help. Gives extra points for attendance, doesn't weight tests, doesn't assign really hard problems.
I have received A's in every math class I have ever had until now. Mr. Guo is indeed a brilliant and nice man but the language barrier makes it hard on his students. I do not feel comfortable asking questions because I usually end up more confused. He is a great man, just not the best of teachers.
He is a great teacher. He gets way too mch flack for his accent, but you get used to it after the first week max. His tests are very hard, but the homework is easy. He only assigns the odd problems so you have all the answers in the back of the book. Also, attendence is extra credit.
His accent is very hard to understand. He also has a habit of dropping off in the middle of sentences, on top of speaking quietly, and laugh-talking (at his own jokes). I ended up buying a solutions manual in order to teach myself the material. I've been in his class all semester, and it's still hard to understand his explanations in class.
I took Prof. Guo for 120 and 125. And there is no way to understand this guy! He is from somewhere in Asia, so he has an accent. But if you watch what he writes and what he shows you, instead of trying to listen to him, you can learn a lot. Watch him demonstrate, don't listen to his voice. I've signed up for 235.
Mr Guo is very experienced in Mathmatics however, His accent is so think he is hard to understand and the fact that he mumbles every other word makes it impossible to learn anything. and his teaching style is poor at best. He has most likely not updated his style since th 70's. Overall, if you have him as your professor be prepared to teach yoursel
I have received A's in every math class I have ever had until now. Mr. Guo is smart and very nice but his accent makes it hard on students. I do not feel comfortable asking questions because I ended up more confused. Be prepared to teach yourself.
He is really good at teaching his subject but is just so hard to understand with his accent. also he has no clue how cars work even though he tries to explain them and laughs at his own jokes way to much. make sure you have a very good understanding of math if your gonna take him.
Horrible!! If you want to teach yourself take this class. He seems like a nice person, but no one can understand what he is trying to say. Just save yourself a hassle and don't take this teacher.
First day you'll notice the deep accent, but once you get past the accent, you'll notice he also has huge expectations of you, the students. It's a class that'll take many hours, but the class was enjoyable to the end because of the teacher. He was funny—at least to me—and he loved what he was doing. Put in the hard work, and you'll do fine.
This class requires you to work! (Just as all higher education should.) Once you get past his accent, you should have no problem getting through his class. Mandatory homework (which is basically free points), extra credit for attendance, and cheat sheets for tests. If you show up to class and STAY CAUGHT UP on the homework, you will learn.
His accent is so strong that you cannot understand him. Unless you are good with Chinese accents, I would not recommend on taking his class.
I usually give anyone and anything the benefit of the doubt, however, Prof Guo was one of the hardest teachers I have ever had! His accent is extremely strong and I could barely understand anything he said. Homework and Tests for each chapter so be ready to teach yourself! Oh and BUY THE ANSWER KEY he recommends, trust me it will SAVE you!!
He has a thick accent, no doubt about it, and at the beginning of the semester, he is a little quiet. But, as the semester goes on he isn't too bad. His tests are based off the homework. His grading system is all in the points, not weighted. 100 pt tests, and homework points vary. Final is not cumulative, but the last two chapters covered in class.
Professor Guo is a brilliant mathematician but not always so great for teaching and explaining. If you don't already feel comfortable with algebra, try to find another teacher. If you are you'll probably be fine. Home work is worth a lot of points, gives partial credit on tests, EC for attendance, & the final isn't cumulative. Accent isn't that bad
When I took his class, the language barrier was very tough for me. Sometimes, we would work on a problem in class that would take 20 minutes and he could not solve it. I wish I would have taken a different teacher because he would rush through lectures and not give enough examples for homework and tests.
wow. don't take him - drop him now. I am a B-A student here and do great with classes. His accent is terrible, he speaks too softly, and you cannot read what he writes on the board. If you're great with independent studying then take his class - he doesn't take attendance (only for EC). But if you're average with math or suck - do not take him.
Don't get me wrong, Professor Guo is a nice man, but his accent is too strong. Even if you can get passed the accent, his teaching style is very unclear. I had to drop the class because I was very confused right off the bat and he isn't very helpful. When you ask a question, he tends to get frustrated and ignore it. DO NOT take this class.
Tao Guo is the worst professor I've ever had. I do not recommend his class to anyone.
It's obvious he knows what you're doing and he lets you ask questions and will go over it at the beginning of the next class. It's hard to understand him and the grade is pretty much the tests. I'm good at accents but I could barely understand him all year so I pretty much had to teacH myself. Doesnt even know our namesn
Its clear he knows what he's talking about but its hard to understand him. I'm usually really good with accents but i cant understand what he says. It doesn't seem like he cares about his students.. he probably doesn't know any of our names.
Terrible can't understand him and if you ask a question he makes you feel like an idiot. All you do each class is do three problems and he takes the whole time.
If you struggle at all with math, you'll struggle with Professor Guo. I am competent with math skills, but algebra isn't my strong subject. I was not expecting to be unable to understand my professor or have no actual teaching being done in the classroom. Prof. Guo flies through homework problems as if students already understand and mumbles.
You literally cannot understand a word he says. He has such a thick accent I ended up dropping the class because I couldn't learn anything. Never take a class by him if you can avoid it.
You cannot understand him at all. He doesn't answer questions. I would never ever recommend him. I had to go to his class to get attendance points but I would just read the book and do the homework. I could not understand a word he said because of his accent
Difficulty understanding him as well as poor teaching even when you can understand him.
This teacher is very hard to understand of you already have difficulty understanding math, his lectures are long and very hard to keep track of. If you skip you won't pass.
He's not easy to understand and he's less than helpful with questions. He isn't particularly helpful even when you go into his office during his office hours. Even after using the tutoring and math lab i was completely and utterly lost the entire time.
I have never met a teacher or professor that would purposefully attempt to ask questions meant to trick you. That alone is enough for me, but as everyone else has said, he is very difficult to understand and when you can, he is extremely vague. When you ask questions, he doesn't always give a clear, concise answer, as one would expect in math.
Mr. Guo's class isn't easy by any means, and you definitely get to understand him better as time progresses. On the flip side, he is a very nice person, and also approachable. If you struggle with math I recommend looking elsewhere for a teacher, but if you do take his class you'll end up much smarter for it. He also has an attendance sheet!
I have always been a straight-A student and easily picked up on things, but this class was impossible for me. Professor Guo is very difficult to understand and is very vague. The tests are made up of trick questions. They don't accurately measure your understanding. Would not recommend.
Mr. Guo has a VERY heavy accent and he also talks very quietly, so it is very hard to understand him. It is hard going from class to trying to copy his work at home. But he does use different colored chalk and will answer any questions anyone has for him. If you're good at math and you are looking for a challenge, then he is the teacher to have.
He does have an accent, however it's just a matter of getting used to it. Easy grader!!! Small mistakes like sign changes in a problem that would typically result in half credit will only be marked down 1 point out of 5 or 6 points. He's very helpful when approached with questions. He also teaches upper level math and prepares students accordingly!
If you are not good at math I definitely would at all costs avoid this teacher. although he has a good attitude toward teaching his class does not allow for much error, bombing one test will compromise your entire grade.
i want to cry
Took this class but ended up dropping, very hard to understand his accent and was usually very quiet and mumbling his words. He was very horrible at actually teaching us, as he was very vague and did not explain at all how he got answers, expecting students just to learn and do homework from the book. He didn't give us much to go off for notes too.
One of the best math professors I took at Rock Valley. Don't be scared of his accent, you get use to it. If you already struggle at math, I advise taking a different route. Student-friendly grader. Almost impossible to get a question completely wrong if you pay attention in class and ask him or help if needed. No MyMath Lab stuff. Give him a chance
I generously gave him a 2 because he's a professor that does care to help students understand the material. The problem is that he is very hard to understand, so the first month is usually just winging it. If you take this class, be prepared to teach yourself half the material and visit the math center a lot.
Yes the accent is difficult but actually go to class everyday(dont leave early)and you will get used to it. I could clearly understand by the end of the 2nd week. Its a hard class because its Calc 3. He sometimes confuses himself when giving examples but is decent at teaching. Tests are easy if you do hw and make yourself the allowed cheat sheet
I could understand about 15% of the words he said due to his heavy accent, he always thought we understood him and no one ever did, and when we tried to tell him we didn't catch what he said he just kept going. Worst teacher I've ever had I have no idea how he teaches at a college.
He has a very heavy accent that makes his class so difficult. Hes a nice guy but this class is hard if math isnt your strong suit. If youre good at math, you can show up on the test days and pass. There are tests & 4 sets of homework to go with them. You can use a handwritten cheat sheet on all the tests, including final which isnt cumulative.
