Dr. Zha was the best professor I had at Emory, bar none. He will expect you to think very hard and work very hard, but it will be one of the most rewarding experiences you can ever have.
Show up to class, don't be lazy, show effort and you will be rewarded. It's challenging but so worth it. Zha is brilliant and wants students that are interested in the subject. Really likes math. Favorite course taken at Emory.
Interesting grad-level material
Prof. Zha is a respected economist. He teaches graduate materials. The course might be hard, but it is really useful.
Although it is a high level course with writing and loaded with 10 quizzes (you may drop 2), you literally just need to go to class and listen. Material is tough but he will explain well. No work at home at all. One paper - final paper, max 10 pages. Easy-A class. (I suspect he gave most people an A)
Awesome professor. Really responsible and caring and like students asking good questions. Renown economist
While Tao Zha appears to be very knowledgeable about economics, and definitely has the credentials to back it up, his teaching leaves a lot to be desired. Every class this semester has constituted of at least 15 minutes of advertising the economics program at Emory. The class isn't hard, but be prepared to be bored out of your mind twice a week.
Starts every class with boring music. Unfortunately, that's the most interesting part of the class. Maybe if he spent less time talking about himself, his accolades, and the econ program at Emory, he could teach me something.
He's a very smart, qualified guy but you honestly don't learn much from the lectures. He gives sooo much extra credit from daily quizzes, etc. Also the tests are pretty representative of the material so getting an A is never a challenge (if you study). Don't know why so many ppl are complaining, you don't really have to go to class if dont want to.
Excellent professor. He made hard material easy to understand. Need to go to the class to understand the material. Extra credits are helpful.
There are A LOT OF extra credits. This class is an easy A if you study.
Gives extra credit but made the final ridiculously hard compared to the previous two midterms basically just out of spite. Would not recommend.
Grades are only exams, and they're tough, but very reasonable if you read the textbook and attend all the lectures. Gives a ton of extra credit as long as you pay attention, and perform well on the quizzes. I love Zha and his Asian dad vibe. He's also a very respected economist who deeply cares about undergrad learning. You can't do better for 112!
All Professor Zha does for lectures is read verbatim from his slides and brag about his accomplishments. The class is graded solely based on three exams. No homework is assigned. By making all exams multiple choice, his class becomes one long memorization test with no room for the critical analysis Econ is known for. This class was never enjoyable.
Everyone here is talking about how the class is hard, but extra credit makes up for it. THIS IS NO LONGER TRUE. He changed the syllabus so now the bonus does almost nothing. The entire grade is just 3 hard tests now. That's it. When you combine these 3 tests, there's 100 total questions. So if you get more than 7 total wrong, you can't get an A.
Tao is very knowledgeable and accessible outside of class. I had wonderful conversations on the global economy with him. However, his class barely prepares you properly for the last exam, which most people got below a 70% on. There is extra credit which helps a lot but if you tank the last exam you won't get an A.
I just have to say that he has such terrible communication skills... Since he doesn't really know how to explain a concept, he just loudly repeats the percentage of people getting the question wrong every time we have a poll question in class. Not the worst professor, but the man definitely has a huge ego and is quite annoying.
There is no question that he cares about what his students learn. He is also very knowledgable and well established in econ. However, I did not find him to be a good teacher. His explanations were poor and when I asked him a question I just ended up way more confused.
Calculus 1 is not a prerequisite for the class, but if your taking professor Zha it should be, and you should be very good at math. Intro to micro was a super easy course with almost no math involved, but this class is almost entirely math. He is very smart, but he only explains things with math rather than conceptually. This class is way too hard
I think he really wants us to learn but makes it very boring and uninteresting
Good people, lectures are kinda boring
Literally doesn't know how to teach. He always just brags about the Fed. He makes his tests very hard and the avg is always around 75%. He doesnt even curve the class no matter how low people score. In fact, the extra credit doesn't count much. DONT TAKE HIM FOR MACRO.
Prof Zha is so caring! It's extremely clear that he doesn't want his students to worry about their grades. He is very encouraging in office hours. There are quizzes after each class, but they count as extra credit and are good opportunities for practice. If you work hard, you can def get an A. Do the hw sets for practice bc some qs are on the tests
Professor is amazing. Very well delivered and inspiring lectures and he is a very famous economist. He always responds to email quickly.
A very respected and competent economist. He is caring and sometime very cute, the final is a little bit harder than expected, but you will be fine if you did study.
100% tests (2 midterms 1 final). Midterms were basically same as practice tests, so kind of easy if you try. Final harder than expected, but it was curved to a B. Most people got A/A- for final grade in the class because of really huge curve for class, which had interesting content as well. Lots of extra credit at the end.
Great lectures. I attended every lecture except one (I was sick). Lectures gave us so much knowledge and helped me get A in every test.
Professor Zha is very knowledge and caring. I will definitely take his class again!
Professor Zha not only taught this incredible class, but also helped me outside the classroom. He taught me how to apply the knowledge to the real world problems. He was experienced and gave lots of advice on internship, my career, and my life in general!
Dr. Zha is an amazing professor who inspires students to continue challenging themselves to achieve greater. Besides doing a great job connecting what we learn in class to the real world, he can become a great career mentor for you if you put the effort to get to know him. Just read the textbook, do the practice problems, and you will be fine.
best professor i've taken at emory so far. he's a real gem. just study regularly and do the homework problems. class got curved at the end too. loved it!
I am baffled by all the high ratings he has on this site. I learned absolutely nothing from lectures and did much better on in-class quizzes when I spent class tuning him out and reading the textbook instead. In the end, it wasn't even worth it because your grade is almost entirely based on exams which has content that he never taught us.
Did very well in midterm exams when I attended professor's classes. Then I missed classes later, because I was too busy. My mistake! Professor offered much more than the textbook. Lesson: attend class regularly and do homework problems assigned by professor.
So many extra credits are provided at the end of the semester, erally boosting the overall grade. Professor Zha always tries to include real-world examples in his lectures to make sure everyone understand thee content.
Nice guy who cares about students' learning, but is not a very good lecturer. He is a classic example of someone who is very talented and qualified, yet cannot transfer his knowledge to others. 2 tests are your entire grade.
Professor knows how economic machines work in the real world. He transforms the knowledge to understanding real world problems. Wish other professors would have real experiences instead of abstract knowledge.
TA teaches better than Him
The professor respects and cares about students' learning. I learned a ton in this class, more than any other class. The material is a bit hard, but if you work hard too, you will get a good grade.
The BEST professor I have ever had. He cares about students' career and spent a lot of time writing me a nice recommendation letter. The material I learned in the class helped my career!
If you want to get the level of insight from sophisticated discussions in the classroom, you should take this course. Professor Zha teaches us something that is always related to the real world.
This is the worst class I've taken in Emory by far and Tao Zha was the worst professor I've ever had. His tests never match what we are supposed to be assessed on and his class is just very hard. It is an intro to macro class. Why does he have to be so hard on us? His classes are also all worthless as he doesn't stick to the class content.
Professor Zha cares about students. He has a lot of real world experiences and teaches well. With his recommendation, I was able to find a nice internship.
It was a great academic experience to take Professor Zha's class. The class was informative and exciting. More exciting, I will become Professor's TA and share my knowledge with other students.
It was a real treat to be taught by such a famous professor. Unlike other classes, the knowledge we learned in this class was not on paper, but closely related to the real world. Thanks to the professor, this class has helped me finding a real job!
Although there is one awful TA in this class who has a poor understanding of macroeconomics and who wastes students' time by seeking their attention , Professor Zha is simply the best! I highly recommend taking him if you are really into the subject.Just go to class, take notes,do your homework by yourself, then you will be fine on the exams.
Professor Zha is a passionate, knowledgeable, and qualified professor. He splits his time between the Atlanta Fed and Emory but makes himself accessible to students. In my experience, I found that supplementing the lectures with office hours made all the difference. His undergrad TA worked tirelessly to help those who attended his office hours.
The comments below aren't accurate because I've never encountered a TA as dedicated as the one for this course. While Dr. Zha's lectures don't delve deeply into the concepts, the TA's office hours were a lifesaver for me. Overall, Dr. Zha is a very respected economist and an inspiring professor. He encourages you to aspire to great things in life.
He is chill and respected.Material is not hard at all .Class is manageable +tests are fair(except the last one created by TA s with tons of mistakes). Interestingly, the complaints below are true:one undergrad TA wastes time and can barely answer questions during the final review session.Nonetheless, the PhD TA is helpful. She slays!
There is a lot of homework in this class, and homework is 30 percent of your grade. However, if you read the slides and jot the material down, most homework problems are actually straightforward. The first two tests are easy, but the final is very hard. I recommend spending a decent amount of time in the class to prepare for the final exam.
This class was one of the hardest I've taken at Emory but the care and passion that Tao Zha and his TAs put into this class was astounding. Looking at the comments below you will see a lot of drama about the last exam and interpersonal drama between students and the TA. That is irrelevant towards Tao Zha's ability to teach and lead.
I don't want to get into personal matters. Professor Zha not only is the best professor who gives informative lectures but also makes time to talk with students outside the class. He inspires me to like macroeconomics and pay attention to economic news. I will jump at another class professor Zha will offer.
The mechanism for choosing a TA needs improvement. If only one person complains,it's probably personal feud; but if so many people dislike him, it is his own problem. Look at his inability! A hard exam for TA selection is necessary, otherwise a fair amount of students understand the class better than TA does, yet the TA creates the exam. What a joke.
Professor Zha is one of the nicest professors I've ever had. He genuinely wants everyone in the class to learn the material and even gave us the chance to go on a tour of the Fed Atlanta, which was really awesome. The class can be challenging and requires a lot of effort, but being pushed so hard actually helped me understand Macro really well.
I'm tired of too many discussions about the TA. But there are three most important aspects of this course: Professor Zha is inspiring, caring, and teaching the material that matters to our real life. I have not encountered such a professor.
What I like most are classroom discussions and the Fed tour. The professor's amazing lectures relate to real life stories. He incorporates students' feedback and even uses his evening time to have office hours!
Professor Zha is great. He cares about students' learning. We get an A because of his generous grading. I recommend it to everyone, period!
Both lecture notes and homework save my day. The professor is amazing. I did not know much about headline news. Now I understand much of economic news because Zha's teaching.
Emory has bad students, but it does not mean Emory is bad. The course has a good or bad TA, but it does not mean the course is good or bad. Zha curved the grades so generously, and he was an amazing teacher.
Genuine and caring person as well as a great professor that taught and lectured well. My only complaint is that he delegated a majority of the task of the final exam to the worst TA possible, making the ending an awful experience. I otherwise enjoyed his class and would take again.
Seeing so many people complain about the TA while upvote professor zha is very satisfactory. It turns out I am not the only one suffering near the end of this semester. Fortunately, zha gave us a curve big enough to counteract the imbecile TA's exam upon us.I still would recommend his class ,since the TA does not prevent me from getting an A.
The professor always made him available for students, even though he is busy with the Fed. I worked during weekdays, but zha held extra office hours on weekends for me. No professors have done that for me. I recommend zha for everyone who would like to learn and get a good grade.
The Fed tour was awesome! It gave us so much background information about the Fed's policy and made me appreciate more the professor's amazing lectures. Recommend this course to you all.
The course was relatively easy if you did all the homework. The homework accounted for 30%, very nice. Exams drew from the homework, although the final exam was a bit hard. But the professor gave a huge curve on the final grade. I would take Zha's course again.
I will take Professor Zha's class again. He gave wonderful lectures with may real world examples. The lectures benefited a lot from his experiences at the Fed. Zha is also a generous grader.
The best Professor ever! He saved us from the stupid, arrogant, and trouble -making TA by a huge curve for the final exam. An easy A in hindsight. jajaja
I enjoyed professor Zha's lectures. They are informative and relevant to the real world. I wanted to be his TA or RA to learn even more.
Very straightforward midterms with a nasty final exam. TAs designed the final with ambiguity and mistakes , so his only fault was trusting the wrong guy , nevertheless he curved up our grades. might take him again though, since he is a good lecturer
Best professor I've ever had. Totally caring about students in and outside the classroom. Lectures are entertaining and informative. Zha's Fed experience really helped me understand real-world problems.
Zha always took the feedback seriously. He implemented changes quickly to take care of our feedback. He cared about our learning and career development. A generous grader!
My favorite professor. Zha's homework, tests, and grading system are very fair. I'm doing summer internship and have found the material taught by the professor extremely helpful!
The grading criterion was very clear. The tests were fair. If you did all your homework, it was an easy A. Homework accounted for 30% of the overall grade, which was very helpful!
Best professor I've had so far. Homework really helped. Professor Zha was always there to help me solve problems. His grading was generous. When I decided to apply various scholarships, he was tremendously helpful. I recommend this course to anyone who aspires to have best achievements.
Whether or not you should take the class depends on if the TA from last year is still in this class. Ask people who took it last semester. Ask the Prof himself who the TAs are. Prof himself is experienced, talented, that I admit. However you should proceed with caution. Comment section is manipulated by the TA. If he is still in this class, RUN!
I took Professor Zha's course during the junior year. I have never learned so much from any other professors. Professor Zha graded exams fairly and generously. He cared about your learning and was willing to give your good grade as long as you participate in class and study.
My only complaint is he chose a super incapable TA. In the review session for the final exam last year, many people were throwing questions at the TA not out of curiosity for knowledge but to embarass him. We don't like the TA, but we like prof Zha.
I recommend this course to everyone who would like to gain real-world knowledge about monetary policy and macroeconomics. The professor had lots of experience and was very lenient with grading exams!
Lectures were very clear and informative. Exams were fair, given there was a huge curve for the final grade. Bonus points were very helpful.
I did not get a TA position with the professor, but he was so kind to write me a recommendation for my summer internship. A great course to take because you will learn so much from a world famous professor who works for the Federal Reserve.
This was my first class; it has become my favorite one. The professor's knowledge and experience are inspiring. The grading policy is clear and fair. I'm confident that this will be a great course for me!
Prof. Zha is definitely one of the better profs here. Does not take a lot of brainpower to get an A. Would recommend.
WHAT A MAN! THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND TAO ZHA! Amazing class, very very easy to get good grades. If you play your cards right, you can get a stellar letter of recommendation (more important if you're an econ major)
Tao Zha is the ABSOLUTE GOAT OF ECON. I'm pre-BBA and not econ and I love this man to death. Every lecture is chill and interactive, and we literally toured the fed with him. Class itself is not even that bad, as the unfair TA got replaced by cengage exams that are straightforward. Please if you are reading this, take this class no matter what.
Attendance wasnt mandatory. It was way to easy to simply not turn up. Class wasnt very engaging. If you want a fairly easy A, this is it. Prof Zha was insanely knowledgable. Im assuming if you engage you will get a lot out of the class. Probably why I got very little out of the class.
Tao Zha is the BEST PROFESSOR without doubt. He is so knowledge and lectures go far beyond the textbook. I recommend his class to everything!
His lectures are really dry and boring. Also, he is really lazy - he just puts everything on Mindtap and inflate grades to get good reviews. Don't recommend.
Homework accounts for 30% of the grade, more than a midterm exam. All the exams align with homework. Prof. Zha gave INCREDIBLE lectures beyond textbook. The experience was not something you could get in high schools or in other professors' classes!
He is such a kind and exciting person. He is very knowledgable and enthusiastic about his material. You don't have to attend every lecture to succeed and he is very readily available to discuss class and essay topics. He works at the federal reserve bank and gave us an extra credit opportunity to get a full tour there. It was really cool!
Macroeconomics are not my strong suit, I prefer microeconomics, but Dr. Zha does a good job of making his class interesting. The exams are online, and the homework prepares you for them. The field trip to the Atlanta Fed was great.
The exams and homework were fair. You learned so much for Professor Zha, who has a real-world experience. The tour to the Fed was incredible!
Tao Zha is the best professor. His grading criterion was clear. Go to the class and do all the homework, you will get an A easily.
What a PROFESSOR! Dr. Zha taught at Schwarzman College. Now he teaches only this course at Emory. Take this course if you want to have a life-time experience with what real macro is all about!
I received an A. Attending Prof. Zha's lectures was a real experience. Try to be his TA because you will get a strong reference letter later.
Even though this course was not mandatory, it would be essential to attend Prof Zha's class. The most informative and inspiring course because he works for the federal reserve. It is too bad that Prof Zha does not teach more courses.
Prof Zha's class was the best. He cared about students and wrote me a very nice reference letter. Tried to be his TA. He would write a good letter.
I'm grateful to the professor for his recommendation. The class was really great. He is a great lecturer with lots of knowledge.
A great professor and a wonderful Fed tour were highlights of this course. Fair homework assignments and exams directly based on homework! An easy A.
Prof Zha's class was excellent - the lectures were informative and engaging. The assignments were fair, and the field trip to the Fed was a highlight. I found unstuck AI a helpful study tool too.
Pretty good class. Macro isn't my favorite but he was passionate about the class and made it interesting.
Super easy take him if you need GPA booster for ECON 112
kinda glazed himself a lot during class, but he was a really good lecturer and the class was easy
An incredible professor! Dr. Zha provided real time knowledge and experiences beyond the textbook. The grading criterion is very clear. An easy A. Take it!
What I liked most about Dr. Zha's class was his passion for teaching. He cared about students and went out of his way to help you earn an A.
Tao Zha is the man. Super chill, sweet, and friendly. I attended the first three lectures and faded the rest, yet still scraped away with an A. Super easy, I devoted no time and learned nothing. Weekly HW (30 mins) and virtual exams :) Chat GPT is your best friend. He cares a lot about his students, I highly recommend.
His lectures are extremely boring and he got super mad for no reason at the end of the semester. Free A but you won't learn anything. Do as you wish. The final was a disaster with multiple questions that didnt make any sense. Everyone cheats with online tests which is annoying. Wish I learned more instead of hearing a tariff rant 30 times.
A great professor who taught so much beyond the textbook. I missed a few classes due to illness, which caused me not perform well in the exam. But I was able to use what was taught in my interviews. Super cool!
An easy-A class. If you wanted to learn more about real-life knowledge, Professor's lectures were amazing. He taught at Schwarzman College and his experiences at the Fed really helped me beyond the class. Highly recommend this class to everyone.
Extra credit matters. It's annoying some students cheated. He cared about students, even spent time on weekends to have a meeting with me. The Fed tour was incredible. Learned so much outside the textbook to help me with interviews.
Take this class. A lot of extra credit propelled my grade from B to A-. Tao Zha allows lively discussions, making the class connecting to daily events.
Other than a Python project that was not explained/set up well, his lectures is understandable. Even then, he dropped the project after seeing most people not understanding it. DO NOT SKIP THE LECTURES! The final exam includes topics covered in an in-class discussion, and being present when he explains the topics helps a LOT with the tests.
It's a fair game for the professor to include class discussions in the exam. He warned us. I did learn so much about things connected to the real world and headline news; it helped me with my interviews. Skipping the class, you lost all these valuable things taught by him.
Professor Zha cares a lot about the class and his students however lectures can be monotonous at times and hard to follow. Regardless exams and homework are fairly easy. If you go to class you should get an A.
A relatively easy A for this class. He has amazing experiences in central banking. Go to the class if you wanted to learn real things beyond the textbook. What he taught in class will stay with me even when I take more advanced courses or after my graduations. Take his class!
Dr. Zha is insanely knowledgeable. He cared a lot about students. If you wanted to know how to invest or get an internship, he would always help!
I wanted to send Professor Zha for his knowledge and great lectures. I have been enjoying the summer internship thanks to his strong recommendation. Highly would recommend to this class to everybody!
Take his class! The class was easy, but you learned so much far beyond the textbook. All the knowledge I gathered in his class helped me in my internship job. An easy A, but the bonus is extra knowledge!
Just got back from my summer internship and am ready for the fall semester. Only through the internship did I realize how much Prof. Zha taught in this class has been so useful for my real-world experiences. Do not miss taking his class if you want to gain knowledge beyond the classroom, including successful interviews and apprenticeships.
