she is a very nice teacher, she explains well 'n bein' patient to students. she gave us handouts in class. for testz, study all da handouts tat she gave u, u r gonna be fine.
I love Tara, she's great!
She really cares about the well being of her students. Her tests are very hard and based on reading as well as lectures, but she offers numerous opportunities for extra credit. She's a wonderful caring human being who lives and breathes Anthropology. She's my absolute favorite Anth. teacher.
she really cares about her students and makes sure you can recieve a good grade in her classes. i have had her twice and plan on taking her again.
She's really nice and cares about the students. She a great prof. in small groups. But she has some trouble with large lec. halls with 100's of students. Overall really helpful proferssor, be warned though BIO 111 is really hard
Speaks too fast. Not clear. Got an A in the class.Reads off a powerpoint and does not Teach.I could teach the class better. She is very helpful, that does not replace her weakness in teaching. She waste time discussing unnecesary details (whch we can learn on own)and does not describe basic concepts.
Covered material in lecture too quickly. Poorly explained concepts and material that appeared on tests. Covered a significant amount of material we didn't need to know, and was impatient
One of the better human beings that I've ever run across. Her class can be stressful because she's hard to understand sometimes, but she will do whatever she can to help you in all aspects of your life. A wonderful person.
Very enthusiastic professor, but very disorganized. She rambles in on in her lectures. She would make a great professor if she were more organized.
Very enthusiastic about what she teaches and always made me look forward to her class, but she is sometimes hard to follow and is disorganized. Still, class was worth taking and prepared me for Bio 112.
Great Professor! Tara will give many opportunities for extra credit to improve your grade. If you put in the effort you will do well!
best professor in the entire world. amazing lectures. very fun and interesting. the exams were easy and she definately kept my attention through the whole class. i definately reccomend her!
Difficult to understand, not worth taking - i should have takin another class. Gives ggod grades to class clowns not those that do the work.
Very choosy. She'll help the students she wants to help. those she doesnt like...she wont give a 'hoot' about them. I had to take my situation up to the chancellor. She treats certain students VERY unfairly. Likes to gossip about her students outside of class. Bottom line..if she likes you, your lucky, if not your not going to pass the class.

Dr. Ashok is a very funny and makes for a good day at school.
awesome
I thought Prof. Ashok was great - she treated freshmen bio students with respect instead of constantly reminding us that we were "just freshmen" and much of what I Iearned in her class has stuck with me two years later. The material was hard, but the exams were merciful.
one of the best professors I've had since I've been here
She talks too fast and her notes skip around too much. When you ask a question, she kind of answers you but you really dont know if she did or not.. not clear about what to expect on exams or what you should know for exams..she seemed nice and is kind of easy but again, not clear about what to know at exam time.
shes great! but her exams her mad confusing! i do not get what she talk abt in her slides which are all over the place... should be more organize... her game are good but they only help her she bascially plays the game not the students!
Nice lady, sometimes, but can not teach for the life of her. At least not biochem. Gives way too much info at once and expects you to know it all. Her exams are okay, she's not clear at all on grading and where you stand in the class. She will give some extra credit.

she did the best she could having to cover 18 chapters of hardcore material in 6 weeks. a bit disorganized and chaotic but has great personality and will give extra help if you ask for it. overall, a decent class.
She's such a nice woman. Very passionate about what she does. A bit confusing sometimes, but she'll go over things until you understand them.
Tara is Awesome!
She is very kind....very funny and is serious about her work. She gives out quizzes that she lets you make own questions on. Tests are easy, homeworks are not that hard. All in all, if you need an easy class to pratically breeze right by....take this class with her. I guarentee you'll enjoy it.
i took 4 classes by tara, she's very approachable and willing to help everyone understand and get them interested in the lectures. she doesn't assign any text books but rather she prints out her power point slides so you can listen and learn rather spend the time and focus on writing everything down. her outside research is extremely interesting.
She's very inorganized. She doesn't tell you what your grade you stand before the final exam. Her diagrams and pictures on handouts are extremely confusing and copius. She doesn't point out what's really important our of all these slides. Simply don't take biochem with her!
Tara is great. At first it was hard to follow her lines of thought and I would get confused, but once I got used to her style I had an easier time. She likes to give handouts and use powerpoints, which are pretty useful when it comes to studying. I hate science, but she managed to make class fun. She is pretty hilarious too.
I was amazed how fun she made this class! She is one of the best teachers at Umass Boston. I want to take other classes from her.
Nice lady, knows her stuff, can't teach. Somebody get her a TA to handle the paperwork, deadlines and power point.
nice lady, can't teach. Somebody get her a TA, please.
Homeworks are only chapter readings. I barely used the book. The tests are manageable but she gives you more information to study and when the test comes, it is different. She really needs to narrow down the study guides. I did not learn much. I learned more from the book than from her.
She's okay, but like other people have said, she really needs to make the study sheet more concise. She can be funny, but weird.
She is absolutely the worst teacher at UMass bar none. She does not know how to teach, digress off-subject often, very partial & biased, rude and impolite with some students. You sit in the lecture listening to grandma teaching science, not rigorous & amateurish. She may succeed in kindergarten-level not in University-level. AVOID HER b4 u regret.
Okay so this is a good class to take if your trying to get a science requirement out of the way. The professor has a strong Indian accent and can be hard to understand. /she fgives you study guides for the tests and the final is a combo of the questions on the two tests. 2 Tests are worth 25% each and final is 40% she also assigns a short paper
I personaly really liked her, she has a fun way of teaching. Yes, she has an accent but I had no trouble understanding her and if anything it made it more interesting to listen to her. If you study the tests are easy, and she gives you a bunch of extra credit questions. She is very reasonable.
She is GREAT! always willing to explain things after class to those who need help. very fair grading policy. gives x-tra credit questions on the exam. VERY nice woman.
Dr. Ashok is a wonderful person. She does have an accent but is very clear and always ready to explain anything in whatever depth that is necessary. She is a very kind and respectful person but does not tolerate disrespect toward anyone in her class. Her class is fun and appropriate for the level. She made it possible for everyone to succeed.
You cant understand anything this lady says. She is very nice but she has an Indian accent which is annoying esp. for a lecture hall. there are 2 exams and 1 final (WHICH IS EASY BECAUSE ITS THE 2 EXAM COMBINED!) shes funny at times
I took this class with the intention to get the credits out of the way, and was expecting it to be difficult. But it wasn't really too bad. I enjoyed what I learned, but it was hard to understand her completely. And she can get off topic in a moment. Overall, I would suggest this prof.
One of the best professors at umass. Definity take developmental biology if you can. Her lectures are awesome. I wish this class was two semesters long because there is so much to learn from this topic.
uses iclicker for attendance; some days 7 questions, some days none.. not fair at all. her office hours always have so many people in them because of how unclear her lectures are. she knows her stuff but you have to have a background in bio to understand; she does not explain basic bio, expects you to know even though its only a 200 level course
Despite what others say about her accent (which is true, she hard to understand) Prof. Ashok is a great professor and is MORE THAN WILLING to help when you're not understanding a lesson and try to clarify. I got a C in her class :( but that's bcz I didn't apply myself enough. Her work IS challenging, but she's cool and just wants u to pass.
great teacher - easy and very willing to help. she is hard to understand but is always willing to explain more or again. very nice lady would def take her again. still have not bought the text book you def do not need it for intro bio classes she teaches. everything is on the web or in handouts/slides she gives out.
Dr. Ashok is a fantastic person. She has won awards for her teaching and has been called as an expert geneticist. She goes above and beyond to clarify any questions. Her class is fast paced, yet she covers all of the bases. She's truly brilliant, but has the personality to joke around! Great class! Down to earth prof.
Biochem Lab for Tara section is quite difficult. Although she is very enthusiastic about what she does and helpful if you go see her, but she does expect alot from you and her class is no joke. Expect to be in lab the whole time.
Professor Ashok is an intelligent and kind woman. Her class is very intense though, alot of studying is needed and sometimes it is hard to follow her lectures. However, she always offers help but when taking this class there isn't room for fooling around, attendance and effort is needed.
she is the worst teacher in umass.......
she is great, one of the best professors. she is always willing to meet with the students and help out. the tests are easy if you follow the lectures and she is understanding. it was awesome I got an A
Non-science majors beware! Attendance is mandatory, there are 3 tests, the third is cumulative, class was 50 minutes and first test had 70 questions. She wants you to memorize all the chapters with all the terms/concepts, her study guides ask you to do just that. So if you love memorizing 5-7 entire chapters for a test, then take her. I'm honest.
She is amazingly interesting. Learning bio 101 as a non-major senior that needed an exploriory, she is actually amusing. If bio is ur major choose her because she explains things in a different and funny way that make it easier to understand. Her accent isn't a problem, only few words but she sees this and makes sure people undrstand in funny way
Her class was soooo hard to follow. I took her class thinking it would be an easy science requirement which it is not! If you LOVE science then take her class otherwise find something else!!!
By far, one of the WORST teachers ever at UMB! If you are not a science major, DON'T take the class. Attendance is mandatory and she does the iclicker at the END of class. Accent is very thick so it is difficult to understand her. No point in taking notes because she goes too fast. Expects to memorize everything in the book.
She is a good teacher. She explains really interesting things about biochemistry. The only problem is that she expects you to memorize everything from the book. Also, she is a hard grader with the lab reports.
Ashok is pretty good, took the class for a science requirement, so easy. Tests are online which means you can use your notes, lectures she posts etc. she makes everything very accessible to u and is very fair. Her accent easy to understand, it shouldn't even be mentioned. Never used the textbook, took notes or payed attn, got a B. ICliker required
I hate science-I dropped 2 Bio classes trying to fill my Science req because I thought they were impossible before I took Prof. Ashok's class. She's patient and makes the material relatable. She truly wants her students to do well and will work with you to ensure you do. Tests are easy if you study the PowerPoints. I got an A in two of her classes.
I LOVE Tara! My class was in the morning, and it was tough, but she is so funny and energetic and helpful that it was a pleasure to be in her class! :)
The way she teaches a lab simply shouldn't be allowed. "Experiments" are not actual experiments. She It's basically an exercise in pretending to do science. One experiment she had groups of 4 and littrally the only work preformed was loading 5 samples into a gel. 3 out of 4 didn't touch an apparatus. she is very nice, and as a person I like her
Tara is the worst teacher you can ever imagine. Her Indian accent is so thick I was barely able to understand her. Her dry humor was a big distraction, and she went way too fast in the lectures.
Covered interesting topics. She really cares about her students and wants to see them succeed.
No could understand what she was saying. Never seemed to be following an ordered plan. Also messed up my grade by forgetting to add one of my test to my final grade.
Professor A. is extremely nice, she does go through her lectures quick but all her slides are online anyway. It's almost impossible to get anything below a B in that class, just attend class, take the exam and she gives loads of extra credit, literally just ask. She'll be happy to give you a better grade, just make the effort of asking/talking.
Human Origins, online. Tara cares about her students.1x/wk online quiz, 3-4 exams, every question you learn thru video lectures. I never read the assigned chapters. Write a wkly post, submit 2 replies, pay attention to the lectures, you will do well! The beginning = heavy on Biology (which I am terrible at), but I still got an A. I recommend it
WORST TEACHER EVER!! You can't understand her thick Indian accent. She has slideshows with about 150 slides for ONE class. Good luck taking notes! She couldn't care less about students as individuals. She ignores emails and is impossible to get in contact with. Fellow students... DONT DO IT !!!!!!
Professor Ashook is very helpful. Im a very diligent student but I do mess up sometimes and Professor Ashook understood that. I missed a very important test and she still found a time for me to make it up. If you put in the work so will she.
She is great. Her office hours are very helpful especially if you don't understand or need extra help. I would take any class that she teaches. She had power point presentations available on-line to be printed before each class which was very helpful. She gave great study guides. She is a very fair teacher.
Class is ok, slides help but more learning is done in the text book. Tara will help if you ask for it and there is SOME extra credit available. Test grades weigh heavily, and a lot of the test material is on her quizzes, which are taken on blackboard. If you put in the effort you will do well. Group project in this class as well.
She's a great professor, but pretty difficult class. She is always willing to help, and her office hours really will benefit you if you are having a hard time. If you don't pay attention in class, you probably won't do too good.
The tests are really hard and have way too much material on them. The lectures are hard to pay attention to.
If you're not a bio major this class may be tough for you. Personally, I do not like her grading system because it mostly consist on tests and quizzes. There is no homework but to probably read over what she lectures. Yes her accent is hard to follow and her lectures are REALLY boring.
Professor Ashok can sometimes be hard to understand, but she is always willing to repeat herself. Her tests are easy, the study guide is clear and concise on what to study. If you need extra credit, she offers more than most.
You just have to show up and you'll get an A. Just remember to do the homework assignments and you be fine... I took this class as a bio seminar
She is a wonderful professor, and she is always willing to help! If you do your online quizzes and study for test, you will get an A. She also offers extra point assignments.
Tara Ashok has a THICK accent, hopefully you'll be able to understand her. Her tests are super long and hard. I would not recommend taking a class with her. I barely passed because of her tests! Her quizzes online are almost worth nothing!
do not take this class. THICK accent, you will not understand anything she says. Very boring lectures, really hard and long test. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
She is always willing to help you. Study before you go to her class and you would be able to understand her lecture. If you are a lazy person and not paying attention in class, definitely this class is not for you.
Personally, I love Tara! She truly loves her job and makes her students feel that love as well. She is kind of difficult to understand but her charisma makes up for it. Even though the lab is 6 hours, her lab isn't awful. Her lab is by far the easiest from the other two lab instructors for biochem. Just read the lab handout and you'll be good.
She is a nice professor and more than happy to help students who seek help. Tests are large and you better be prepared for it because it covers many topics. Personally I would never take this class again if given the chance because I am not interested in the subject but if you are, it is not bad at all.
I've taken Prof Ashok for all 3 of my Sci reqs. She is not an "easy" teacher, but very fair and kind, and willing to go the extra mile to help students. Tests are cover lot of material, but are predictable. You will do well every time if you take time to learn the material on the Powerpoints. Online assignments replace final exam, which is a bonus.
She is a really good person and caring for her students. She knows the material. But test are way to long. I like the teacher. I just don't like the teaching style.
Very interesting lectures, very nice person and the difficulty lever is probably a little bit below average! Definitely recommend!
Great professor, although her accent is slightly heavy, if moved past that she is a great professor. Very helpful and kind. Would definitely take her again if possible.
Professor Ashok is a very qualified teacher. Dont listen to the students who complain about her accent, she is very easy to understand. Gives great feedback and gives many chances for students to succeed. Material is also very interesting.
I enjoyed he class. She makes biology enjoyable. She goes above to help students. She responded quickly to my messages. She is funny and super smart. I suggest her class. Gives lots of opportunities to get a better grade.
Talks way too fast and flies through notes. Don't bother taking this class! Way too much information crammed into lectures and expected to know all of it on tests. Highly do not recommend. Strong accent, can't really understand.
She is really nice and caring. Sometimes her accent makes it a little hard to follow. She tells jokes. 3 or 4 quizzes online. 2 or 3, 70 question exams but she only counts 50 of the questions towards your score, the rest are extra credit or carry over to the next exam! You have to answer questions at the end of each class for credit.
I am not a science person at all but I learn more in an hour of her class than in a week of other science classes. She is funny and nice and loves audience participation. Yes, she has a thick Indian accent, but you get used to it. HIGHLY recommend. She even gives extra credit just for going to her office hours to study with her. One of UMass' best.
Do not underestimate the workload, although this is bio 101 you will have to devote many hours to studying if you want to do well. You may lose her during lectures because she may get off topic, but if you go to her office hours she will help you memorize all the facts. Even if she rambles she is fun to listen to, very energetic and enthusiastic.
Great professor, care about student a lot. Respect.
Very nice and excited about Biology, and her accent is really no issue I'm not sure what people are complaining about--the real issue with her lectures is that she goes very, very fast through them at times and if you don't review the lectures outside of class you're likely to miss a lot. Lots of info on the tests but if you study you'll do fine.
Lectures can be boring but taking notes while shes talking helps. Really cares about your grade and wants you to succeed.
There are online quizzes but they are open note. There are 2 tests, 70 ques, but only 50 count and extra points can be added to other test. In class echo 360 questions about material from class. Textbook is free and online, but I never used it. This class is an easy A. Also she provides study guides for the tests, but I didnt use them.
