Dr. Blackwell was absolutely ridiculous; I took biology of humans with her in Fall 2017 and it was more difficult than anatomy 1 and 2 combined. She designed the class so that the tests were 70 percent of your grade. I wouldn't take this class if you don't have at least 4 hours per week to complete the complex study guide.
Online course but she makes exams on such inconvenient times like Halloween and thanksgiving weekend on campus. Gives study guides but it takes u about 5 hours to complete them and half of the questions arent even on the exam. She also gives u an unlimited amount of tries to complete the homework so its super easy to guess and not learn anything.
She could be nice, but I would /never/ take her again. I'm usually an A student and I barely scraped by with a "B." Honestly, I'm not even sure I have that anymore (and it's the end of finals week). Her textbook is so dense, you'll end up reading the 60-90 slide PowerPoints, instead. Good luck keeping up with the pace.
Not as bad as everyone says it is, just manage your time well. I have never been good at science, that is why I made sure I studied for this course. Start doing the study guide a week before the actual exam so you are not having to do 6 chapters worth of information the nigh before. Go over assignment questions. Lowest exam score I earned was an 80
People commenting that this class is hard obviously did not put in the effort. This class is set up for you to pass. She drops your lowest test grade and then has an optional final that replaces your second lowest exam grade. Seriously. This is college. Obviously youre going to have to work. I received an A and Im not even a science major
EXTREMELY DIFFICULT CLASS. THE TESTS ARE INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT AND THEY ARE 80% OF YOUR GRADE. DO NOT TAKE!!!! THE PROFESSOR DOESN'T REALLY GIVE ANY MEANINGFUL EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES. IT IS PROBABLY BETTER IF YOU TAKE THE CLASS ON CAMPUS.
Don't think I've ever talked to this woman (or reached out to her) in my life. Do your homework. Tests are way more reliant on her notes than the online book. Tests are all multiple choice. Lots of "joke answers" on tests makes them significantly easier than other BSC sections. Would take again. Student must be OK with online format.
Professor Blackwell is not bad as most put her out to be. She gives you lengthy study guides but always makes mention that the book, study guide and powerpoints are fair game for the tests! Tough grader I'll admit and I love science but nothing you can't overcome if you apply the material and study hard. Good Luck
There were four tests and an optional final (lowest grade dropped) and online hw due every week. The tests were 60% of the grade and hw was 40%. There is an exam review given for each test however it is extremely long and more than half isnt on the exam. Hw is easy and you have unlimited attempts. Overall an okay class and its nice doing it online
Overall her class was not hard. You have PPTs that serve as the lectures and homework based on them. You can get the book but it really is not necessary, I just used it to study. The study guides are basically the entire test and the homework is for completion. Just use the study guide, study a decent amount, and do the homework and you're good.
Online class so it was all up to you, but teacher isnt very helpful when emailing.
Class online. Homework for completion, but do have to pay to access it. Tests were in person till classes moved online, then had a full week to do it. Study guide pulled straight from the test. Test based directly off powerpoint. Could not have been an easier class. Easy A.
Test were extremely hard and study guides are almost 14 pages long yet feels like not a lot of material is on the test. Makes powerpoints but most things on the test are from the book. Didnt answer emails. If you dont study many hours you wont pass this class!
Honestly, I took this class online, did the homework on Mastering (you pay for a year but make sure to take bio 2 after this so you can use it for that class too!!), reviewed the powerpoints before the test, and took the test. Easy A. Those were the only grades, and homework was for completion.
The class was extremely black and white. If you did the reading and did well on the labs chances are you will be successful. There are plenty of assignments to boost your grade, there is never any confusion on what you should be doing. The test are on the readings exactly. It was a very well laid out course, the prof was also very understanding.
Literally easiest science class taken (took it online tho). All you do is one Webassign HW every week (which you have infinite tries to get the right answers w/ full credit)and 1 test every 4 chapters. I advice reading your book. She answers emails in a timely manner. Only thing is, if you don't read your text book the class might feel harder to u.
There was little interaction between the professor besides announcements, but she is easily accessible otherwise. You can pretty much do the work and study on your own. She allows some extra credit, bumps grades, and has reviews on chapters for the test. Overall she was fine, you'll be teaching yourself mostly when online.
She doesn't really teach herself, you'll have to teach yourself. She does give extra credit, bumps grades, chapter reviews, and exam reviews, so those were really handy. I mainly just studied the chapter notes, did the weekly homework, and sometimes went over the practice exam and was good to go.
This class is very manageable and doable even in the summer semester. Grades are basically just the HW and tests. The homework has unlimited attempts and isn't really relative to the test material. Test information is mostly on the study guide and summary notes she provides. She basically provides all of the resources needed but just study!!!!!
MIA all semester. She did have multiple surgeries. Tests were HARD and all but one were open note because she rarely posted lectures. I prefer lectures to reading and there were little to none of those. Quite a few HWs but could do it as many times until correct. For all open note tests the average varied between a D and C.
I took this class online and she didn't teach at all. She just uses another prof lecture vid and she is late at posting it. The exam was very hard consider she didn't even teach so why make the exam so hard and she doesn't read email She did have multiple surgeries but why would she teach a class then if she not going to be here.
It was an easy class online. Consisted of 4 tests, online homework every week that had unlimited tries, and no final. She provides lectures, powerpoints, and chapter summaries. Towards the end, she stopped posting lectures and made the last tests open-note. If you go over the textbook, the powerpoints, and study guides you should be able to do well
I took Blackwell spring 2021 when she was dealing with some health issues. However, we had to learn everything on our own so it was hard to grasp the concepts. I was able to understand some bc I took the lab with it. We had 4 exams, no final. The last 3 exams were open note bc she was behind on lectures. Be ready to teach yourself. Low exam avgs.
Took her because I wanted an online class where I can be more flexible with my schedule. Took her for Bio 1 a few semesters ago and it was the same schedule, she is kind of hands-off about everything. Exams don't really match up with the lectures and the textbook but they were okay since they were open note. Class was just, meh.
I took this online class because it was not offered at my campus. The lectures were not posted until roughly 5 days before the exam, so you really had to learn the material on your own. The discussion posts were also required to be fairly long for how few points they were worth. The exams were open note though.
Don't really need to try to pass with an A. Lots of material was cut due to her illness, so don't take her if you want to truly learn the material. Exams were based off the study guides she gave. Exams are each weighed differently for your own benefit and she drops an exam and quiz too.
Professor Blackwell was really accessible and her tests were heavily based on the lecture notes. Honestly, if you read the lecture notes and review the study guide, it is extremely easy to ace this class! I would definitely recommend.
Tara was very nice and very accommodating, Lots of opportunities to do well in this class with clear test expectations. I took this class in person with another professor and it was extremely difficult, just study the study guide and you will do well on the exams, highly recommend taking this class.
If you put the time in to complete and review the study guides for exams, you will receive an A. In addition, completing and review the quizzes are helpful since the exam questions are the same or similar. Easy A since the material is not hard.
Incredibly kind, and willing to work with students. Drops the lowest exam and quiz. Restructures grades to give you the best overall score possible. Provides lecture videos on textbook chapters and a study guide for exams.
Online course so the pre-recorded lecture videos weren't very helpful and you have to read extensively in the textbook. The exam are difficult but the homework and quizzes support your grade enough if you ace them. Overall didn't have any interaction with the professor but she seems good, lowest exams are dropped and study guides are provided
Really awesome online professor. You should take this class if you are looking for a good online bio class.
Tara is extremely understanding of students and her grading scale reflects it. As long as you watch the lecture videos and skim through the book you will pass.
Very caring professor ry and very understanding especially with the hurricane and how it messed up the schedule, so she gave many accommodations. It was asynchronous so cant say anything about the teaching, but very fair grading. Curves and drop one exam and quiz, but the material is kinda length. Overall I recommend
Dr. Blackwell seems like a very caring person and she is very understanding and flexible. The tests however often did not really line up with what was presented in the lectures which made it kind of hard to earn a good grade in the tests. The homeworks were also pretty time consuming but there was only one to do per week for the most part.
Tara Blackwell seems like a caring and understanding person. The issue with this class is that the lectures and the homework often don't match the exam which makes it difficult to study for exams. The exams are also literally 70-80 % of your grade which means if you don't do well on each your grade is not going to be good.
This class is annoyingly hard for a non-major science class that does not even have a lab. It requires more work than my statistics class and is so incredibly hard. The exams barely reflect the HW, and they cover practically your entire grade. The professor barely does anything, and most things are incorrect or late. Avoid if possible
Responds to emails promptly and is very considering. Drops the lowest test score out of 5. Tests are 100% based on detailed study guides and are quite reasonable with the questions. If you study the slides and study guide, you are guaranteed an easy A. Only down side was that grades took 1 week to come in which is because she did not have a TA.
Took it online thinking it'd be easy. ITS NOT. I'm taking way harder classes and this is my hardest. I have people in the group me saying nursing school is easier than the tests. The work is easy the tests are really really hard. Nothing like the study guide not very helpful professor. I'd never take her again
I took her online class and she was very absent. She did not make her own lecture videos and all assignments were from Pearson. The tests are not too bad if you watch the videos and fill out the study guide. If you are motivated and can teach yourself you'll be good but if you need some help with the material this is not the professor for you.
I got an A but it was hard af. She gave 3 extra credits worth 1% final grade each. First two tests were so hard and the last two were easy. The writing assignment and hw were easy too. I would not put myself through this again but god forbid I had to I would choose Tara again. Studying the study guides + lectures + lecture slides will get you an A.
Class consisted of easy exercises, quizzes, and discussion boards. The hardest parts were the heavily-weighted exams. Exams were proctored and you had 2 days to take them. Lowest test is dropped, just make sure to study for exams, especially the study guide.
Get ready to study for hours and be surprised by vague exam questions. She said the exams would be just like her concept quizzes (easy) and her study guide, but they were a lot more difficult. This professor is a nightmare.
Study guides do not align with the exams at all. The exams are really hard and questions are worded badly, and they don't represent what was learned in lecture. Recorded lectures are basically useless so you have to read the textbook and even then the tests still seem irrelevant to the information learned. I would avoid this class if possible.
This class was very difficult. There is a lot of reading required for the smartwork assignments and quizzes. The proctored exams are tough. They do not reflect all the content included in the study guides, lecture videos, or concept quizzes. Lecture videos are too fast-paced and not very helpful. I do not recommend this professor online.
Make sure to read the textbook for this class! Dr. Blackwell is caring and easily accessible outside of class. For tests, take the practise tests and do lots of practise questions. The tests are mainly based on applied knowledge, so purely memorising material won't help.
Tests were SO difficult, you basically had to memorize every single detail from the chapter to answer some questions. Luckily she drops an exam and the other assignments can help boost your grade.
The lectures were hard to follow and the powerpoints were disorganized. The tests were okay but didn't understand why there was honorlock for a lower course code. There are definitely better teachers who can teach better for the same course.
Prof Blackwell is a kind person. Even though the lecture may be a little bit boring in class, but the slide materials are wonderful with full of helpful knowledge you need to know about genetics. A is the maximum grade, if you work ahead all the lectures, an A is easy peezy. First exam will be tough but the rest will be quite easy.
This professor doesnt do anything, her lectures come from pearson. Her exams are extremely difficult for a lower class. Her study guides are beyond useless, her homework takes forever to complete because its ALL busy work.
I would not recommend taking this professor especially if you are taking biology online. He posted online lectures but if you didn't read every page of the textbook you would not do well on tests. The tests are extremely hard and don't really come from the study guide. For an undergrad class, he made it very difficult
This class was unnecessarily difficult. Tests worth 60% of your grade, homework graded for completion is other 40%, homework is the only reason I got a B-. I tried meeting with the professor after receiving 3 low test grades and she was not helpful. I spent 20+ hours studying for the final only to get a D-. Do not take this class if you can help it
Read the textbook, complete her study guide and guided reading and you will get an B or higher. Mastering Home-works are great, you can get any amount of questions wrong and still get the right answer and receive full credit plus they are 40% of your grade. She is very understanding. Study and you will do good. Answer all my emails quick.
This course is unnecessarily difficult considering it's a pre req your exams are 72% of your grade and the other 18% are homework's that add little no value to your knowledge. Studying for this course is confusing due to the lectures containing only 60% of the exam material. The average grade in the class was a 75%. This is a pre req…
The in person segment of this class was not useful. Tests were average difficulty and required going over the powerpoints and the study guide. Overall, the class was completely self learning and only the online segment should exist.
Tests are concept heavy basically have to learn the entire module in order to get a decent grade.
Tara is a great person and I reccomend taking her over a lot of the other science profs. Exam grading is very generous, especially if you can get an A on one of the tests, it will be very difficult to fail. Very understanding as well. Tophat is used. Exams are difficult but if you READ THE BOOK and USE CONCEPT/PRACTICE QUIZZES, you will be fine.
I wouldn't recommend Dr. Blackwell because you really need to read the textbook figures to understand the processes, and the reading is very hard. The study guide is completely useless, as tests are nothing like the content. Tests have incompletely written answers, and the questions are bizzare (make no sense). Only plus is she gives extra credit.
Professor Blackwell is a very helpful and caring instructor. I went through a lot of personal problems this semester and she extended every assignment for me even the exams. She is also responsive to emails and will help her students no matter how. Would definitely take again.
Homework was okay like most of classes. Exams were extremely difficult!!! Study guides are not helpful at all. The questions on the exam are very complex for a pre req class. I spent hours studying, read the chapters and made study guides and yet it was a challenge trying to get a decent grade.
They are very passive aggressive. They don't grade anything. They miss most days so they don't teach anything and you have to self study. Their test questions are mostly subjectively answered so there are literally multiple easily possible answers so they can't even explain the answer themselves. Would never recommend.
Probably the worst professor that I have ever had. Her lectures are boring and she goes off on tangents about things that aren't even on the test. If you are a person who likes to study straight off the slides, it is impossible because her slided are mainly random pictures with no context. Tests are unnecessarily hard and worth 70% of your grade.
Long BORING lectures. No reason to go to class if it wasn't for catalytics because there are video lessons. you can study and use all the resources given and still not pass the exam. I knew all the material, functions, everything. got to the exam and it was crazy. Questions are not straight forward at all and extremely difficult.
This is probably the worst professor I have had thus far. Her lectures are completely pointless to the point where almost no one shows up, even though she does in-class clicker questions. Her tests are incredibly hard unless you have written the textbook by yourself, and they have nothing to do with the lectures. Dont take her if you want to pass.
Don't take her. I took this class online, and she was absent. This class is extremely difficult. She doesn't post her own notes or lectures, and what is gone over in the notes has nothing to do with what is on the tests. I failed almost all of them even with heavy studying. The grading is based on exams. Take BSC2010 in person, not with her, trust.
Tara Blackwell was my last option when taking bio 1, but if I had the chance to choose again, I would not choose her. She does in-class questions for attendance, but no one shows up because you're honestly better off reading the textbook than going to her class. I emailed her for office hours once and she denied me!! Not a good bio professor.
I did hw well in advanced, rewrote lecture notes, + taught others concepts that I understood. However, the test questions didn't line up with the textbook, homework or lectures. The questions were worded oddly which made it difficult to interpret what was needed. I learned more watching youtube lectures bc I didn't understand the slides/teaching
This class is tough, but Tara really does provide students with everything needed to succeed. She has a real passion and drive for science, and it is so refreshing to see. If you take this class: DO THE PEARSON DYNAMIC STUDY MODULES!!!! She's so sweet, funny, and overall a pleasure to be around. Would take again.
It's still a biology course so don't expect it to be that easy, Professor Blackwell is very helpful though. The grading criteria is very clear, just 16 homework assignments that take a while but they are thorough. 4 exams that are pretty easy.
No plus/minus, doesn't round up grades at all. Not the best lecturer, they're very under stimulating but you can do the clickers at home to still get points. Since she offers the course online she posts all her materials on canvas, so if you put in the work to study you're good. Doesn't drop a test but they're weighted differently based on scores
Sooooo... just take another professor at the school for Bio 1. How I managed to pull through with a B? Couldn't tell you. I studied for hours for each exam and averaged 60s across the board. Extra credit because we did so bad on the third exam came in clutch.
Had health issues this sem and she was the most understanding prof I had. Read the textbook since it goes in even more clear detail than the powerpoint. Tests are funny like other reviews said. Got a 52 % once (but 100 on last). EC is extra 4%. Hw is cake with multiple tries. Wouldnt take them again. Too much time devoted for an intro class tbh.
I enjoyed having class with and i would take her as a professor anytime as well.
Worst Bio 1 teacher. Lectures are unorganized, homework is annoying, and the tests do not line up with what was taught in class. Take any other teacher if possible
Very nice and understanding professor but I felt like her lectures were hard to follow. Had to read the textbook for this class in order to keep up with the content. Her grading scale though is super generous and you are able to drop an exam. Tests were medium difficulty.
It was a pleasure to take this class with Tara! She is so understanding and kind, and I enjoyed taking it with her very much. She is very easy to contact, and responds very quickly as well.
I really appreciated how understanding and caring this professor was. The course was structured in a great way, and expectations were clear. I would love to take more courses with Dr. Blackwell in the future!
super easy class but the homeworks were unbearably long. tara is nice and understanding about extensions but she is so so deadly boring, especially if youre already familiar with the material - even if youre not, youll probably be bored out of your mind
I have nothing against prof Blackwell, but she mostly just read off the slides rather than actually teach anything. They're super sweet and understanding though, just very boring lectures. The practice tests for each unit definitely helped, but tests were very different sometimes from slides.
Tests, in my opinion, are very different from the study guides. You will have to study a whole lot for this class. Do the optional concept quizzes; they will be helpful.
Take this class online. Long smartbooks for homework. Office hours aren't helpful at all. Mandatory attendance with the most boring lectures ever. Lecture videos posted that you have to watch before class are more helpful. Tests are so hard with class averages being 70s WITH the curve. Never came close to having a C in a class until now.
the exams were mostly reasonable and similar to some of the quizzes and practice. very little interaction with the instructor i wish she had weekly open virtual discussion sessions. just a lot of reading and memorization of obscure things. i thought the exams should be a little more easier though
Not a good professor at all. Tried completing the study guides and could not score an A on any of them, only 80s. Tests are extremely difficult and do not reflect concept quizzes or practice quizzes. Vague answers to questions and they don't make a lot of sense.Take someone else
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. Professor Blackwell is one of the kindest professors I have taken by far at USF, and she made her materials extremely accessible online and easy to understand. She is readily available outside of class and very kind and understanding about any extensions you may need. Definitely take her if possible, for any of her classes!
Tests were literally impossible. Studied and took notes extensively. Rubric states that exams would reflect lecture videos and were the complete opposite. The color green could be mentioned and anything green could be on the exam, or so it felt. Study guides were like kindergarten work compared to the exam. Consistent bad grades. Homework was easy.
although she gives homework, your grade is based HEAVILY on your exams. the good thing is your lowest exam grade will weigh less. However, she locks the grades all semester, and will release what you have after each exam, which is very annoying, but she does give extra credit.
The tests in this class were a lot harder than I was anticipating. The study guide was somewhat helpful but for the most part I didn't really know what was going on. The test's weight depended on how you did on it, for example, a test you got a 89 on was weighted more than a test with a 82. I liked that aspect and the fact that they added a curve.
I honestly don't know why she has bad reviews. The material is straightforward and the test aren't difficult. It's a Biology class so you have to dedicate time into studying. The only annoying thing about this class is that the Hw's are pretty long. As long as you put in the effort you should pass this class. Highly recommend.
10% participation (TopHat, not iclicker, same thing), 60% 4 noncumulative exams (worst exam is 10%, best is 20%), 10% homework, 10% unproctored online quizzes. Unhelpful, time consuming hw. Boring, useless lecture. Only study guides reflect the exams. Extra credit w/ curved exams/extra quiz. Very doable but flipped format isn't for everyone.
Dr. Blackwell is really kind, she gives plenty of resources to study for her tests: Lecture videos, study guide, practice quizzes. On top of that she curves and offers extra credit! her lecture style is not the most engaging but I feel like the lecture videos make up for that because you can go back and watch them.
I wasn't a huge fan of some of the lecture material posted; however, she posts a lot of resources, and I would typically find more interesting videos on YouTube. She seems very nice, although I didn't interact with her much. She always posts announcements before exams and makes sure to open one before the withdrawal period. Gave 2% extra credit.
She's awesome!!! If you have the possibility to take her I truly think you should. She is extremely clear with the course and how you can succeed. As others have said, the lectures are not the most interesting thing in the world, but they are for a participation grade which I think helps as a buffer if you need it. Such an understanding human being
She provides lectures, summary notes, practice quizzes, reading guides, and great study guides that cover the material on the exams. She also gave 2% extra credit at the end of the course. The class could be hard, but she gives you what you need to do well!
