Carpenter is such a good professor. Her exams are hard, but if you follow the guidelines she lays out, you can get an A on them. Read the sections before class, do the end-of-chapter problems, and take advantage of tutoring. The class is hard, but she really knows what she's talking about and how to teach effectively.
Hard class, great professor
A little sassy at times, but she tells you exactly what needs to be done to pass the class. Loves to put trick questions on exams.
She is sardonic and rude. Her motto is "I don't ask trick questions, I ask questions that make you think." She does not actually teach, preferring to quiz her students every class and only bother to lecture if a majority does poorly.
She is the worst professor I have ever had. She doesn't teach at all, she just puts up practice problems in class for you to do. You have to teach yourself all the material to do well in this class. There are 4 exams with a FR section. The exams are fairly hard as well.
Dr. Carpenter is generally useless as a teacher. Each class she has students spend a majority of the time answering clicker questions, and only teaches material when a high percentage of students are incorrect. She is condescending to her students and insults them whenever they do poorly on questions, not realizing it is her poor teaching.
FYI, Huge Steelers Fan ! Her office door says Steelers Fans welcome ! Great teacher and a nice person.
I had Carpenter for 101 and 102. In 101 I loved her teaching, I learned a ton and I learned to love chem! In 102, she did a lot less explaining, expecting us to learn it all from the book. DO THE EOC PROBLEMS! And take advantage of tutoring. Tests are hard, but if you study thoroughly outside class and and know the material in and out, you can pass
She's terrible. Class consists of the students answering questions and she does maybe 3 lectures all semester. If you ask a questions, be prepared for her to tell you that she doesnt know it. She will trick you on the exams. Every multiple choice answer is an answer that will come up in your calculations. Go to tutoring, and DO THE EOC PROBLEMS
Her class is hard but she is an amazing teacher! I used to do everything last moment which caused me to get a B but if you actually do what she tells you, you will get an A.
By far one of the worst professors I have ever had. Be prepared to teach yourself from the book. Her lectures comprise multiple questions and she doesn't actually teach. If you ask a question don't be surprised if she gets mad at you for not already knowing the answer. I would highly recommend taking this class with another professor.
Had her for both 101 and 102. The way I see it, most people judge Dr. Carpenter solely off the grade they got in her class. Most people that who didn't do well, hated her and vice versa. I was somewhere in the middle. I got an A in both and thought she was okay. Keep an open mind and put in the effort, you'll survive.
Dr. Carpenter gets a bad reputation, but she is really nice as long as you don't slack off. As long as you do textbook problems and all assignments, you should be fine. Definitely study for exams, there are usually a few tricky questions. She is a really good teacher and it's easy to understand the material as long as you put time into the work.
Good teacher, just doesnt elaborate very well or give good examples
Her tests arent that hard, but she expects so much and teaches so little. If you are good at chemistry and can work on you own, you will do fine. If you struggle at the concepts that are intuitive to most people, then it will be harder since thats what she doesnt teach. I went to her office hours once and she yelled at me instead of helping me.
Dr. Carpenter is the classic intro level college professor; one that weeds out all the people who aren't interested in science. Personally, I felt like her policies were very overbearing and lecture was not very helpful, especially for 102. DO NOT TAKE HER CHEM 101/102 UNLESS YOU HAVE TO.
She's an awesome person, but not the best teacher. She doesn't really lecture. She'll go over a few key points and do a few examples, then dedicate the rest of class to clicker q's. She only goes over a q only if a majority get's it wrong. Be prepared to read and take good notes, b/c you're basically teaching yourself. Tests are difficult too.
She gets your hopes up and then crushes them. Don't get too excited when you see your exams.
Dr. Carpenter gets a lot of flak from people in her class who come thinking it is going to be easy and who refuse to work when they find out otherwise. She is very good teacher. She is thorough in lectures, she is committed to her student's success, and she just enjoys the subject. Chem 101/102 are weed out classes, so be prepared. This is college.
I never took AP Chem, so the class was different than high school honors Chem. I got a B, without really putting my all. But if you try your best and stay on top of things, then it is very likely you will get an A. I failed 2 exams but managed to get a low B.
In order to do well in this class, you have to put in effort. Read the textbook, go to office hours, review clicker questions, and do practice problems. The first two exams are HARD. Don't be disappointed if you fail - there is often a slight curve in grades at the end of the semester.
Try to get past exams from older students. She is helpful as long as you approach first and ask, but don't expect help to be given. I took AP chemistry in high school, so it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but I saw my friends fail. There is a really slight curve (max 3%). Don't count on it. Study for your tests and don't miss class.
The class overall is a mix between easy and bad. Unless you read the textbook, constantly go over practice problems and attend the office hours then you will have a hard time passing the class. I received a C in the class but I feel as if I could have doe better overall.
Dr. Carpenter is a horrible teacher. She is a nice person but don't expect her to ACTUALLY teach unless majority students get a clicker question wrong. Her exams are pretty hard and confusing.
She was nice, but when it came to helping during clicker questions, if you are apart of the minority that got the question wrong, you are completely out of luck, and will be left behind.
She's not a mean professor if you talk to her. In lecture, which is only short, she tends to run past topics spends time doing clicker problems. With that said, it is important to come to class prepared. Do the end-of-chapter problems! They are the best tool for the quizzes (some are directly used) and help with Exams.
AWful teacher, spent almost no time teaching the subject and clarifying the things that needed to be clarified and just threw clicker questions at us, rarely explaining the answers to them. Only good thing about her is she gives lots of extra credit, but it doesn't help much
Extremely challenging exams. Probably my least favorite professor but unfortunately the only one for chem 101 and 102.
I wouldn't consider her an "easy" teacher. She expects you to do a lot of work on your own, but you leave with a well-rounded knowledge of the subject. She is approachable and is willing to help if needed. She actually made me interested in chemistry enough to change my major. You actually have to try in this class, so be prepared.
genuinely concerned about students, clears up small details in basics of chem, establishes the reasons behind steps of problems, distinguishes diff between similar words, clear in what she expects, extends office hours, very responsive to emails...only explaining when majority wrong = EFFECTIVE use of time..strugglers should've gone to office hours
Carpenter was a great professor. Whoever tried hard would easily get an A. She is very clear with EVERYTHING and is very willing to help. Her office hours in person and online were dedicated to students. She is so accommodating and obviously cares about her students. She is fair and so were her exams. Nothing on the exam wasn't covered in class.
Don't take this class with Carpenter unless you have taken AP Chemistry or have a lot knowledge about Chem already. I walked in not having taken Chem for about 4 years and I had a bad time. Jeez, what an awful professor. Nothing but clicker question after clicker question. Good luck if you take it with her.
Horrible prof. She expects you to know everything before class so that she can hack your brain to bits with clicker questions. If you think the clicker questions are bad, wait until the exams. She gets angry really easily and doesn't lecture. Sometimes she brings her darling children to class and spends the whole time telling them to shut up.
She is the worst professor ever. I felt like no matter how hard I studied I never got higher than a D on her exams. She expects you to know everything and looks at you like you are dumb if you ask a chem 101 related question! DO NOT TAKE.
had her for chem 101 and i barely passed that (solid 65%. now for chem102...good god. first exam i got a 45% on. i studied daily (3-4hrs a day) for a month before that exam. she doesnt teach. she just uses the clicker the whole time and expects you to know the section in a day. practice exams are easy but the actual exam is 6x that difficulty.
Take advantage of her virtual office hours! Meet with her one on one and she will tell you exactly what you need to do to do well. I failed exams but after I met with her one on one, I got A's. She's VERY approachable! Her clicker questions are great preparation for her exams. She really does want her students to pass. Best professor ever!
Read the book, do the hw, don't skip class and do the end of chapter problems. The class is easy if you simply focus and put forth time and effort. 102 has more math, but I preferred it because by doing a bunch of end of chapter problems her exams don't seem bad at all. You can get an A if you make this class a priority. Plus, she's very helpful!
She expects you to know everything prior to class. Unless you've taken AP with good understanding, you are screwed. 20% of the class failed 101 and more people are failing 102. she is approachable outside of class but she does not teach. you have to do a lot of self teaching.
Please explain in the class
Great proffessor. Does so much to help students learn the material. How many proffessors holds weekly online Office Hours online at 8pm during the week and on sundays in addition to in person Office Hours? Her exam & clicker questions can be tricky, but it's so you understand the material. You get the grade you deserve with her, and there is a curve
Read b4 class. DO learnsmart for class. GO TO CLASS. Do practice problems after class. You'll need all the points you can get. Do ALL learnsmart & quizzes. Exams are hard. Final is cumulative. Buy the practice workbook. It will save your life; do every single page & problem in it. If you can, get exams from previous students. DO NOT FALL BEHIND.
Same rules as CHEM 101 apply. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. 2 or more hours of study each day. Read material & do learnsmart/quiz b4 class. GO TO CLASS. Do practice problems after class. USE THE PRACTICE WORKBOOK. Practice exams are helpful. End of chapter problems not so much. Final is cumulative, not as hard as her exams. Buy the ACS workbook & do it.
Is a ok teacher all around. She is nice enough, but doesn't really explain concepts that well. Her clickers are graded on correctness so attendance is pretty much mandatory. Her tests are extremely difficult and she doesn't post an explanation key for them either, just an answer key so you dont really know why you got a question wrong.
CHEM 102 is a tough course, and you will have to study unless you're a Chemistry wizard. Carpenter is good at explaining things, but more often than not class is just clicker questions. I wish she had lectured more, but she does have office hours and seems to care about her students. I got a B in the course with some studying and an AP background.
Carpenter is an awesome person. She is funny and loves to tell you Friday features. But, she is incredibly hard. The tests are ridiculously hard. You will need to spend every moment studying for her exams. This course consumes you. Don't be fooled by her nice personality, this instructor gave me hell.
it's a pretty hard class, but if you pay attention in class the clicker questions are really helpful. Plus she has office hours multiple times a week and online office hours twice a week.
Dr. Carpenter is definitely one of the best professors at UMBC! She is very approachable and does everything she can for her students. Her exams are tough but if you do exactly what she says you will do well in the course. She honestly made me love chemistry and her teaching style is probably the best possible way to learn it!
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE HORRIBLE REVIEWS. Seriously. I was afraid to even take chem bc of what people said & waited a year longer to take it, but she is an AWESOME chem teacher. I never understood chem well, but with her class, I actually enjoy it now! GO TO CLASS & READ. Anyone saying it's "so hard" is not trying hard enough, studying, or reading.
Your grade is essentially based on the tests, and the tests make you think. She provides practice exams for all of the tests, but if you study just the practice exams you're not going to pass the test. Chem 101 and 102 are tough classes and you need to put the time in to read and understand the concepts. Not a horrible class and grading is fair.
She's a tough prof. Her class is less teaching and more quiz questions based on homework and the reading assignments. This is more about self learning, than anything, however, she offers many outlets to get help and on a personal level she is fun and will help if asked.
Definitely one of the best professors at UMBC. Excellent lecturer
If you read the book then the homework and clicker questions are easy. Class isn't actually mandatory but if you don't want to fail it is. Exams are much harder than the practice exams and is a lot of self learning.
the material is usually close to understandable, but the questions on the test are at a more difficult and require a higher level applied thinking
If you don't need to take Chem 101 -- don't.
SO she's fair, it's not a B.S class and you should go to a majority of classes as, in my semester (2014), she had quizzes in each unless she announced there wasn't. You have to go to discovery, which is group work, for 2 hours or you get penalized. Test are tough average of averages was about 68-72% .
This is a weedout class, for sure. Dr. Carpenter has done her best to make sure that year after year freshmen in STEM get introduced to the college experience. Her course is tough, not gonna sugarcoat it. READ. Study in groups. Do lots of problems. She's going to try and trick you, so you gotta think. 102 is even toughertrickier.
This class may be what is wrong with UMBC and college. This class made me: 1. Want to give up my dream 2. Want to transfer *She does not teach it is all clicker qs. *She is unapproachable and only answers you in office hours *she does not explain in class * tests are hard for no reason * class consumes life. Say bye to sunlight
Need to read the book and do online homework and come to lecture and study like crazy. The whole lecture is clicker questions- she barely teaches. She is very dedicated to the class, though, and will answer questions on blackboard or in office hours. Very tricky questions. You'll need to work a lot for this class.
Don't let other reviews fool you, this class is not extremely challenging but you must be dedicated and take a lot of time to understand the material. The tests are very tricky. When Carpenter says "know the exceptions" she means it, that's exactly what she tests. With effort, you can get a B but it takes a little more for an A. Carpenter is cool.
Chem is a tough subject. I wish she would explain things more. The exams were crazy hard never got higher than a C on them. Average was between 60-72% Thank god she doesn't make final exam anymore its department based now.
I took AP Chemistry and scored a four on my AP Test during my senior year of high school. So I had already had a good exposure to the subject, but I found the class was a good review of the foundations of chemistry. As a fall semester freshman, it was definitely a good choice to retake to lighten my semester and boost my chemistry confidence.
This is a tough class, not going to lie. However, Dr. Carpenter tells students from day one that the course is going to be tough. You really have to devote a lot of study time for this class. One thing that is an absolute must, MAKE FRIENDS IN CLASS. Discussion is allowed with clicker questions, and it's so easy to ask a friend for help.
The class got difficult very quickly. You're going to do well if you devote a lot of time to this class and pay attention AND MAKE FRIENDS. I can't stress this enough, do not try to go at it alone, especially for the clicker questions. Carpenter is always open to help, but can be intimidating.
She's very nice and very clear!
. I was a chem tutor in high school and NEVER struggled but this class was absolute hell. You have to devote hours upon hours to the work. Like online hw before class, quizzes every class, practice problems after class, discovery for 2 hours etc. I went to office hours and tutoring and studied constantly and still failed along with 20% of the class
If you read the textbook, take notes, and do practice problems, you'll be fine. Dr. Carpenter is super helpful; she literally tells you everything you need to do to get an A, you just have to do it. She's very helpful; she has office hours and virtual office hours every night before exams. She's sincere and rly does try to get u to pass her class.
She makes the class tough for the sole purpose of giving legitimacy to her subject - intro chem. There is no reason for this course to be as tough as she makes it. I'm not really sure what her objective is. The averages for the exams is around 70%. Lets not get ahead of ourselves. We are talking about intro chemistry. I think it's ego.
If you do the work you're asked to do and read the text book on your own to learn the material, then practice in class, you will do well in this class. If you're a freshman, be aware that a lot of college classes require A LOT of work outside of class. This class asks you to learn the basics on your own then learn problem solving in class.
I got an A in her class but I think that's because I had a pretty solid chemistry background. I agree with most of the feedback. Makes it hard to answer easy questions. Too much work for an intro class. Chemistry can be intimidating, she only makes it worse.
A lot of people on this site say a lot of had stuff about her, but she offers LOTS of opportunities to get better. For one, she has virtual office hours twice a week, and also on days before exams. She also offers surveys, for extra credit, and she gives free points out a lot. Her lectures are very helpful. Before class, read the chapter though.
She was hard, no question about it. However, if you study then you will be fine. I did not study and failed some of the exams. There is a small curve depending on the average exam scores. Discovery was a pain.
Took her for 101 and 102. It was not easy. Ended up with a B in 102 because I ended up working harder in 102. Study and find a way for you to learn the material. The exams are manageable if you study hard enough and learn the basic concepts. Go to office hours if necessary. Small curve depending on how the exam averages were.
I found her to be rude and also made the class way harder than it needed to be. I avoided approaching her for extra help because when I did, she was sassy and made me feel worse for performing poorly. Exams were very tough if you have a weak background in chemistry. Reading, note taking, and practice were all essential.
Great professor. However the work needed to pass is horrifying. There is this online homework called ALEX which can take hours to complete, the homework is also due 3 times a week. Discovery is a nightmare, but these things have nothing to do with Carpenter. Take her if you want to learn, but do not think it will be easy.
I took her CHEM 101 and 102 classes in the 20132014 school year. She's a great teacher but she does NOT just hand you all the information you need! You must study on your own to do well!
Congratulations, Professor Carpenter, for winning the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Alumni Association! Well-deserved Recognition!!
She is hardworking, dedicated professor. She is not too easy but is fair. Managing hundreds of students each semester is not an easy task. She immensely deserves the teaching award! I am proud that I took a course from an award-winning professor!
Dr. Carpenter seems really nice at first but after the first exam you soon realize that she makes this class much harder than it needs to be. There will be a lot of work and it is extremely difficult if you don't already have a good chemistry background. This class is self teach. Sadly she is the only chem 101 professor so be prepared to struggle.
She makes you work for that A, but it will be worth getting to know her
Dr Carpenter is a fantastic teacher. She explains things in ways understandable to students, is approachable, and genuinely would get to know every student if she could, even in her 600 person lectures. Her exams are tough, but reasonable.
She's a good chemistry teacher. I came it knowing basically nothing about chemistry and as long as you do the end of chapter problems along with the reading like she recommends you'll do fine. Don't underestimate the class though. It is challenging
Great teacher but you must work hard to get an A. You must reach success at success at success.
Dr. Carpenter is a very good teacher; she says very early that you should do more practice problems, and begin studying early. THIS IS TRUE! If you don't, you will not get the grade you were hoping for. However, the tests are very tough for ALL the Chem classes. They have multi-conceptual questions. They make you think. You gotta work for it!
Carpenter teaches every single Chem101 class. This class is made unnecessarily difficult and the amount of work/studying required is not proportional to other 100 level classes. This is because Chem 101 is a weed out class for STEM majors. If you can avoid taking carpenter for 101 or transfer in credits, you would be wise to do so. It sucks.
Took her for chem 101 and chem 102 and 102 was way easier. She uses them as weed out courses
This was the worst class I have ever taken at UMBC. When you ask her questions she can be extremely condescending. If you've never taken chemistry before good luck. She makes this way harder than it needs to be. This class jeopordized my standing in other subjects as well because it takes up so much time to study for. Don't take if she's teaching!
This professor does not help at all. I recommend getting the textbook because you will be doing a lot of self-teaching for this course and her CHEM102 course. Her tests are the spawn of Satan. Her lectures are 0% helpful. She gets frustrated easily when you go to ask for help and don't understand the concept immediately. Good luck, you'll need it.
She's a pretty good professor. I took AP chemistry and this class very easy for me. I, however, did have to study minimally. She does offer many resources to help you get an A, just make good use of them. Don't miss class. Don't miss discovery. Exams are a little tricky, make sure to read and re-read the question.
She is the only option for CHEM 101 so just brace yourself and use ALL of your resources. Go to the RLC for tutoring and reviews before tests & make sure to go to her office hours. Reviewing everyday is key to passing.
Tara Carpenter is almost the most stereotypical professor in terms of professionalism and attitude. She almost takes it personal when the class does poorly, and will vocalize. She can have an attitude, but most of the time if people shut up, she lectures... However you must teach yourself, class is for practice and reading quizzes.
Tests can be tough, if you don't study. There are so many ways to practice ahead of time (practice tests, review questions, reviewing ALEKS), make use of them and you can pass. If you took AP chem in high school, this is all review and you should be fine. Don't skip class because of clicker questions. Study/read and you can get an A, no problem.
I actually loved Dr. Carpenter. She was so helpful! I ended getting a D on the first exam and A's on the others! She gives so many resources to help you. I think I'm going to end up with an 88 though, however, I do think there is a slight curve. Study from the book, and read before lecture!
I took this class as a Freshman (took Chemistry AP but did not take the AP test). My advice would be to read the book thoroughly. She assigns chapters to read before class, so that you are familiar with the material as she explains it. Make sure to do this, and do not fall behind. If you follow this task, you should receive an A on every test.
She gets a bad rep but honestly she provides her students with many ways to prepare for her exams including practice tests, practice problems, and there are usually sessions held by the TAs. An A in this class isn't difficult in this class if you use all the resources you are given. I think she is very clear when explaining concepts within chem.
Dr. Carpenter explained things very well and answered as many questions possible during class. She provided us with many resources such as practice exams, practice problems, and office hours. However, I felt that her exams were unfair and had many trick questions. She only curved the class by 3%. You need to put in the effort or you won't succeed.
She makes the test exceptionally hard and she doesn't usually go over the contents in class. You need to set your own time to go over it. In class, it's usually just group questions. And lots of reading quizzes
She doesn't teach. You have to read the book and teach yourself. Class consists of a bunch of clicker questions based off what we read, no lecture. And she barely even goes over the clicker questions. Sometimes she is very rude. I definitely don't recommend her. Very disappointed.
If you're taking this class really get ready to put forth effort specially freshmen. A lot of the material is self-taught and lecture is solely used just to clarify some information. If you don't understand the material in lecture then office hours become very helpful. Always do end of chapter problems most of the test questions come from there.
I did work a lot for this class in the beginning of the year, but once I found my way of studying I did't study too much. The main thing is that different people have different ways of studying for this class. A lot of people come into this class expecting that its like high school, but it is not. What I noticed is that this is the regular.
greeeeeeat + VERY HOT
She's not terrible. She's a tough grader, has awful tests, and doesn't tell you much in lecture. The hardest problem with her class is the sheer number of grades that she crushes you under and the stupid grading criterion. Her lectures are just practice problems. She doesn't really "teach" anything.
Great but Tough Professor!
She is not such a bad instructor as some of my colleagues believe. She is in fact very helpful when you approach her for help. I found her to be quite clear as well in classroom. Agree she could have been a little easier when it comes to grading, but what else you expect in a chemistry course?
I had her for both 101 and 102. I disliked her very much both times. I think the whole flipped classroom is not meant for a freshmen/beginner level course. Her exams were tough for a 101/102 course and she was of no help inside or outside the lecture. The whole chem 101/102 is a weed out for all the stem majors. Must work very hard to earn ur grade
Carpenter takes excessive pride in her chemistry ability. She told the students at her office hours how she bombed out of every subject except chemistry while in school. As a result she makes the class far more difficult than a 101 class should be. sadly she is the only lower level chem professor. This made me change majors.
The absolute worst teacher I have ever had. She was extremely unhelpful in terms of teaching and this is basically an entirely self taught course. She goes extremely quickly and hoards you with clicker questions so be prepared. Seeing her during her office hours did not help me much and she wasn't very polite to us when she was in a bad mood.
She'll test us on things uncovered by lectured. Three topics on an exam weren't even mentioned in class let alone covered.
She is the absolute worst. Everything on her exams were not even on the study material that she gives out. Basically, her tests are based purely on luck. Don't even bother studying because she has no idea whats shes doing especially for a 101 course. Too bad this school can only afford 1 chem professor.
Can be nice sometimes but is very blasé and dismissive towards people who don't go to her office hours. Lectures are not very informative, would recommend going to tutoring center.
Very tough class, emphasizes learning and not memorizing. Skip class and miss out on points that youll desperately need in the end. Beware of this professor.
Carpentar is a very difficult professor. Basically make sure you are only taking 1-2 classes the semester you take chem 101, YOU NEED TO FOCUS ALLLLLL of your attention on that class!!
Had her for 101 and 102, DO THE READING, her reading guides will be your friend. I took AP in high school so her course was quite easy for me, but I do admit, at times she is not the best at explaining herself. Great person overall, always willing to help.
Reading the textbook and practically memorizing all of it is mandatory or you won't pass the class. The exam averages were always a failing grade and she doesn't curve exams. I ended up dropping this class and changing my entire major because of how difficult it became. Be prepared to work long hours on homework!
A lot of people don't like Dr. Carpenter but I really found her to be very intelligent and wonderful professor. She is excellent at explaining concepts. This class is very intense and DO THE RECOMMENDED PROBLEMS! THEY ARE NOT RECOMMENDED BUT NECESSARY! If you try and take your time to learn the material you will succeed. Final is ACS standardized.
Easy A for me, as I took AP Chem. I did see a lot of other students struggle, however, and all her test averages hover around 60%. She doesn't explain things very well in class, but will explain better during office hours or 1 on 1. She also is kind of condescending to kids who are learning this for the first time and thus lack basic understanding.
Literally the worst professor I've ever taken in my whole life. Honestly, the only thing you can do is go to all the tutoring sessions you can and spend hours trying to learn this stuff. Each test is worth roughly 15% of your whole grade. And you have 4 tests altogether not including the final (which is also 15% of your grade).
Doctor Carpenter is very bright and intelligent, but she's one of those teachers that you either love or hate. Her exams are unnecessarily difficult (tricky questions). Also, you don't "learn" much in class at all; you teach yourself by reading the book, and you're quizzed in class.
Dr. Carpenter is nice and she's very good at giving a fun and knowledgeable lecture, but her tests are way too difficult for a 101 class. As a person I think she's nice and a little intimidating but her tests messed me up and made me question if I could handle my major.
Carpenter is a crazy person. She is mean and shouldn't teach this class because I don't think she even knows what she is talking about because she doesn't explain anything. Do not take this class. You will cry all the time.
Dr. Carpenter is a great professor, if you don't mind feeling like you've got the test in the bag, and then 1thousands of curveballs are thrown your way. Every exam was much more difficult then all of the practice exams provided. There were clearly questions written to mislead everyone. 90% of the people I know in her class are failing due to exams
The average for exams in my class was a high D. If you are not so strong in math, be prepared to suffer a little bit. As a student who took AB calc in high school, I was pretty proficient in math and this helped me in the course. SI PASS (supplemental instruction helped me a lot, as did doing additional and recommended problems (these are key!!).
I LOVE HER!!!!!! You can't lay back and expect A of course duh
Dr. Carpenter is very nice and enthusiastic. She gives students resources to pass the classes (recommended problems, SI/PASS, etc.) and it is up to students to seek help if needed. However, you really need to work hard in this class to pass. Reading, going to class, and putting effort into class are required if you want to pass.
so, yes this is a weed out course but she makes this class way harder than it has to be. If the class average is a D on every exam every year it might not be the students... be prepared to study hours for the exam just for the wording of the questions to trip you up. Only thing that taught me was ALEKS
Exams are extremely hard for a 101 course. She will throw 2 million curveballs at you. If you feel like you're prepared for an exam, just know that you're not.
This teacher makes class harder than it really needs to be. If you read your book before class and pay attention you can do well in class but the exams are ridiculously hard. The final exam is a standardized exam by the ACS and students do way better on it than they do on any of the other exams which proves that they are way too difficult.
She expects you to read the textbook to cover most concepts, and in class you'll practice them. Like others here mentioned the exams are tough(got a 5 on AP Chem but haven't managed to get above a 90% on the non ACS exams. Just make sure you read the book, go to office hours if you don't understand something and read questions carefully.
This was not an easy class at all. No matter how much you study, her exams are difficult. I studied every ounce of energy and barely managed to pass. The questions in her exams are not based on what she teaches. Material is very concept heavy, you must know the concepts inside and out. Worst professor I have ever come across.
If you pay attention in lectures, and take notes from the book, you should be fine. However, take the rating below me into account. Even though this is a weed-out class, I had to put in a ridiculous amount of work to get an A. I took 17 credits and this class required more work and was more difficult than the rest of them combined.
Getting an A was very difficult because her test questions are tricky. Read the questions very carefully. Do readings before class. Pay attention to the little details in the textbook because they'll show up on tests, like paramagnetic vs. diamagnetic. She does care about this class a lot and knows what she's doing, but you'll have to work a lot.
Not an easy class. The tests varied with difficulty but there was always some very tricky questions. These questions required comprehension skills from the test-taker that I just don't think is necessary in a 101 class. However, I do feel that I learned the book pretty well. Paying attention to detail is crucial. Be sure to do book problems!
Don't let people kid you, this is a weed-out class, so it is designed to make you stronger in your major. Luckily for me, I'm not a Chem major, but I worked hard and got a B. Dr Carpenter is a good professor, nice, funny, maybe a little scary but she teaches well and that's the main thing;.
Alright, this rating is specific to the honors course. Each week we had a different lecture and at the end we were put into groups of four and told to give a presentation. There was barely any instruction and the grading criteria was confusing. The lectures themselves were slightly boring especially because most of them were too advanced for 101.
Professor Carpenter is one of the most caring professors I have ever seen is respect for transferring her knowledge to students. She has high enthusiasm and teaches is a very clear way. The class outline is very specific and she tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A. However, she expects way more than she should. Exams are not as clear
I can only wish my professor for chem 102 was Dr. Carpenter. She strives to teach concepts in full. Because this class is mandatory for UMBC students and not all students have the motivation to tough her class out, she has a mixed reputation. Do not be fooled. She is an amazing professor and knows what she is teaching.
This class will probably require more effort than all your other classes. Dr. Carpenter definitely knows chemistry and expects you to understand all the concepts; her exams are hard (there are tricky questions). She's not that bad as a professor, and she was good at explaining concepts. If you read, take notes, and pay attention, you'll be fine.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! Her class is way too hard for a 101 class and going to class when she was suppose to be "teaching" didn't do anything for me. You teach yourself and you go to class to get your clicker points and if you dont understand something? Well sucks for you cause Carpenter definitely wont help you.
People dislike Carpenter because her class is hard. But more than any other teacher in my first semester I felt that Dr. Carpenter really cared about her students, even though she had a couple hundred of them. She took the time to help students get used to college life and it was something I really appreciated.
She's kind in the classroom but there is a substantial amount of homework due online almost everyday. Her readings are lengthy and her exams are way too complicated and tricky. I understand that Chem 101 is a weed-out class, but I feel she expects too much in too little time. It's an intro level course and the material is very advanced.
Carpenter is a good Chem101 teacher. She tries to give you a lot of information on what will be on quiz/exam ect. If you read the book and go to lectures the class is really not that hard. That being said, if you fall behind it it will take effort to recover. She is good at explaining principles, and seems to genuinely care about her students.
Carpenter is an understanding outside of class, but the coursework that is given in the class is insanity. Screw up, and you won't catch up. If you have focus + motivation issues, ADHD etc, you're in for hell. She admitted that the final exam is 5x easier than what she teaches us. I feel that she would be much better teaching a small-med. class.
I had to drop her class because I had a medical issue and couldn't catch up again. She almost never answers questions in class and she is fairly rude in her emails to the class. I would never take a class with her again
AVOID UNLESS CHEM MAJOR. Reading quizes every class, HW due every almost every class, Severe penalty for missing discussion. Provides a lot of resources to help, but you need to memorize a lot of gritty details in order to begin answering test questions. Don't know an ion? too bad, next question. Numerous students re-take every year. Horrible.
Those tests are on steroids. You can think the clicker questions are easy and that the homework is fine and then the exams will hit you like a bus. ALEKS is terrible. Funny at times and makes lecture engaging, but don't be fooled. One of the hardest intro classes you will ever take.
I honestly did not like her at all. I set up a one on one meeting with her and she was very rude and uncaring. She failed to provide any feedback or advice and basically told me that "it looks like you're gonna fail. oh well". I dropped the class and am retaking it spring 2018 semester, hopefully with better results.
Does not know how to do a 101 class.
You will spend half of your study time doing Chem101 homework. If you don't understand the material before you go to class, you will fall behind because the lecture makes no sense and it is all tough clicker questions. She doesn't have any intention to teach.
Very rigorous course for a Chem 101 class. Carpenter is a good teacher but the tests are ridiculously challenging. The averages for all the tests were at most 69%. Stay on top of the daily homework because they will help you in the end curve you don't get lazy and skip them just because you see they are worth 2 points each.
Dr. Carpenter is okay as a teacher. She gets the material across well enough but her personality is terrible. She treats everyone like little kids. She is very condescending.
Dr. Carpenter was one of the hardest professors I've taken. Her tests are very difficult and are not straight forward. The homework is tedious and overwhelming. She said on the first day of lecture that she encourages everybody to asks questions, yet if you do, she sasses you.
Ridiculously hard, no clear explanations, and just overall bad attitude form teacher. Definitely not a 100 level course. If you take it, come prepared already knowing everything but this class is basically just a teach it to yourself course.
I studied my butt off for this class and I still struggled with EVERY test. I did all the homework and got 95% of clicker questions right every class. She is very passive aggressive and is hypocritical. Very sassy and a little disrespectful. Also puts hard clicker problems and gets mad when people get them wrong but does not show how to do it.
Dr. Carpenter knows what she's doing but makes the clicker questions in class and the exam questions confusing and not straightforward at all! She lectures well enough and if you read you can have a decent understanding of what you're doing but she will put a completely different question on the exam and if you don't read then you'll get it wrong!
She likes to tell the class that we all fill fail certain exams. She offered extra points on an exam if we fill out a survey on blackboard. I filled it out but never got any points. When I spoke to her about it she said I got an 80 so thats good enough and didnt give me my points.
I respect Dr. Carpenter as a person but not as a professor. She is super hard on her students, lectures are ok but expect us to know all of the materials by heart. This part I don't mind, but I despise her exams, which is clearly written to catch us off guard. The class is not hard so long as you read the book or have taken AP Chem.
This professor has a bad rep, but I honestly think it's just bc how difficult GenChem is at UMBC (you should just expect this - it's an honors university). She is honestly a great lecturer (although sassy).Exams are difficult, will trip you up if you don't know concepts and if you don't read the question CAREFULLY. Main advice is to just practice!
I think this course is so hard because chemistry is hard!! You HAVE to practice on your own. If you just do the homework and redo clicker questions, you will not be prepared for the harder exam questions (they are more application and not straight forward). She was helpful and understanding when I asked questions I needed help on.
She expects you to learn everything yourself so she can stand in front of the lecture hall and talk about her stupid dogs the whole time. Honestly the worst professor i've ever had.
First week, was great, then the first exam happened. Everything we were taught was basically tossed into the trash can. She makes all the questions, trick questions. She also says, don't learn from Aleks, but our class is heavily Aleks based. She is a great person, and makes lectures pretty enjoyable, but she can be very confusing.
Annoying professor but if you try youll get a decent grade
Chem 101 is hard, but not bc of Carpenter. She provides a lot of resources to help the students and is rly accessible. Alot of people complain about her but most of them are just lazy and expect that they'll get an A just bc they come to lecture. That's not true. You have to actually put in work, read the textbook, take notes, etc.
Mrs. Carpenter is not as terrible as I expected. She has been here for many years and knows what she is doing. You basically learn and teach yourself before class, go to class to review with clicker questions. Her test question are formulated in a weird way so you really need to know the concepts. Not an easy A, i tried really hard and got a B.
for reference of my experience I completed a bachelor's elsewhere before UMBC 100 level class but requires a LOT of time She provides MANY resources GO to SI Pass,USE resources, read BEFORE handsuccess People that complain didnt do these "i studied hard" - studying is NOT reviewing 3 days before chem's tough & people blame their performance on her
She's a good teacher. The ones who give her a bad rating are just the ones who are unwilling to read the book and take notes before class, and put in the extra effort that they need to get an A. Carpenter puts in a lot of effort to teach, and does a good job considering how many students she needs to teach.
CHEM 101 is pretty work heavy. Dr. Carpenter's style of teaching is very different from anything I've every experienced. She does a good job at explaining in lecture. But, the exams require to "apply" the learning to other topics, which makes her exams pretty difficult. There's a lot of help for this class. USE IT!
Requires deep understanding of every topics to get an A. She gives you extra credits sometimes.
This class is straightforward as long as you do the readings and practice problems. Come prepared to class if you want to gain something from the lectures. The tests are somewhat tricky, so be careful and look over your work before turning it in. As for Dr. Carpenter herself, she does her best to make sure that there are enough resources for help.
Use the SI PASS exam review sessions, the Chem Tutoring Center, do the Aleks, do the recommended problems, the extra credit reflections after all exams, take notes on the readings, and redo the clicker questions and you should do well.
She's an Ok professor. You'll have to be very attentive in lectures and be top of your work. There are many resources to use and you'll have to if you want to succeed. Tests are hard which are tricky and checks if you actually know the stuff. It's a difficult class for a 1st year student and for a 100 level course.
I know this is a weed out class but goodness gracious. I would study like crazy only to get a D or a C on the exams. I passed but i was hoping to at least get a B in the class. ALEKS was helpful and i did good on that but the tests were nothing like the questions on aleks. I wish I came in more prepared to study and take this class.
You are at the mercy of her emotions, there were times I didn't want to go to class because I didn't want to deal with her taunting if in a bad mood. Lectures are fast paced and it's easy to fall behind. Class is very ALEKS based, but doesn't correspond to problems in ALEKS. Hard exams, but if you study from the lecture slides you should do OK.
I honestly liked Carpenter. She knew what she was talking about and can teach. The course requires you to learn by practicing and reading the material before class. Its a lot of work, but it is a requirement for a lot of stem majors. Carpenter is accessible in office hours and takes time to go over things there. Difficult, but willing to help
She is very knowledgeable about Chem but that doesn't mean she can teach it. Dr. Carpenter is one of those teachers that does care if students fail or pass but she is not great at taking action to actually help the students pass. Honestly, the TA's and Dr. Bass were better at teaching the subject.
Dr. Carpenter expects you to know the material. Her lectures are just questions for you to solve. Tons of homework to do on ALEKS. If you go to her office hours not much of a help. She lectures on how self-teaching is better because she can't make us understand the material, but if you don't understand anything how can you teach it to yourself?
I love tara. She is my homegirl. 100% would take again. Orgo isn't even hard. It s basically a free A.
She's very organized and expects very specific demands from her students, HOWEVER her exams are nothing like class, practice exams, or ALEKS. She expects you to use skills you learned in 9th grade to answer PhD level problems. I had to go to rehab after taking CHEM 101 with her because her class caused me so much stress that I now have PTSD.
She does understand the subject, however, she doesn't know how to teach it to students and belittles and taunts the class whenever she can, which is almost every day. She has a horrible personality that makes me not want to come to class half the time, but participation counts so I must. Take the class with Bass if you to pass and learn, trust me.
Very astonished at the disrespect a handful of students show towards the prof. when their grades did not reflect their expectations. They aren't - they are reflective of your effort. Grow up, do the work, study, and you can easily get an A in this supposed "weed out". Exams are cumulative from 101 to 102. She lays it clearly all out in syllabus
She is a dedicated professor that gives her classes her all. She wants her students to succeed and provides you with tons of resources and out of class support.
Professor Carpenter isn't a bad professor or lecturer. She cares and is understanding, but her attitude sometimes is just too much. The class overall is not easy and requires studying and tutoring. It is hard to do well on the exams. Discovery sucks and is not helpful whatsoever.
Carpenter is one of the better college professors I've had. She provides a lot of resources to help you succeed, and a decent amount of extra credit on exams. She genuinely cares about the class. Far from an easy A, but if you work hard and put the effort in it is certainly possible. Occasionally belittles the class when they dont meet expectations
She personally wasn't my cup of tea, BUT I have never seen a teacher care more about their students than Dr. Carpenter. This woman loses sleep over her chem classes, so at the very least you can say she puts in the effort. Her personality definitely isn't for everyone (very sarcastic, assertive, type A). Tests are HARD. Discovery is TORTURE. 6/10
Her exams are not easy, so expect a lot of studying if you want a B or higher, especially if chemistry is not your cup of tea. My best advice is to use the learning objectives as a guideline for what to study, then use resources like SI PASS for more help. She does provide a lot of extra credit opportunities and cares about the student's success.
Chem 101 was an extremely difficult class to take as a 1st year freshman. She was not bad as a person; she really wanted everyone to pass. However, her exams do not directly reflect what you learn during lecture/ALEKS/discovery. I only started doing well in her class near the end of Chem 102, when I studied the learning objectives in depth.
She cares about her student and is passionate about teaching.
Dr. Carpenter is honestly one of the most caring instructors I have ever had. She wants you to succeed and will definitely challenge you, but it is more than possible to do well. She is truly one of the best. She does so much for the individual student and provides a PLETHORA of resources; make sure you take advantage of it all! Taking her for 102!
Professor Carpenter is great with her lectures; her only flaws would be that she gets impatient quickly if everyone seems to be talking, and she doesn't necessarily want to answer questions that don't pertain to the current topic, as it uses up time that she'd rather us for lecture. All in all, she's fair with her teaching style.
Dr Carpenter cares so much about her students and very clearly just wants everyone to use the tools she provides to take advantage of learning the chem 101 material and making the class an easy A if you do all the clearly laid out assignments, attend discovery (even if it's really painful), and attend lecture. Carp is funny & has valuable lectures
Dr. Carpenter is really dedicated and cares about the success of her students. The class can be difficult, especially if you're a freshmen, but there are a lot of resources (SI pass, Chemistry Center tutoring, office hours) that you can use to your advantage. As long as you can keep top of things and keep on practicing, you will be fine.
I appreciate Tara!
My goodness, I love Dr. Carpenter so much! She cares so much about her class, and prepares so many resources to help you throughout the course. It is very easy to know what she expects of you, though it is a lot, but she has faith in you! It's still a tough course, so make sure to take advantage of SI PASS, tutoring, study groups, etc.
She's so condescending whenever you ask for help, and constantly tears students down when they need help. Unfortunately, she was the only professor for CHEM101 and 102 when I took the class so I had no choice but to be in her class, but if you can avoid her then do so.
She talks about attendance and studying for half of the lecture period. The ALEK's assignments usually have nothing to do with what we learned in class and are so much to do. You mainly have to teach yourself the content from the textbook because what she goes over in class is too broad.
Dr. Carpenter genuinely cares for all of her students. Sometimes her lectures can be boring, as she talks about how we can succeed or any other random topic for atleast 10-15 minutes each lecture. Chem 101 for me was pretty easy, but you earn the grade you get. You can't expect to get by w/o studying and doing practice problems.
Chem 101 was, undeniably, a hard class. Despite that, Dr. Carpenter made a huge effort to help students really learn, and she has plenty of resources for students to use, like office hours and online help. You need to read the textbook, and the class does take a ton of effort, but it's still a worthwhile class, and you have many chances to succeed.
Dr. Carpenter genuinely cares for her students and gives you all resources you need to succeed in her class. You just gotta listen to her! A lot of people that complain about the class are just not doing what they should be doing and it is not her fault. Her exam questions are very clear and though reading before class helps, lectures are fun too!
If you put in the effort, you will do fine. There are a lot of small assignments, but that makes it easier to keep your grade up. She genuinely cares for her students so much, even though she has hundreds of them.
She cares a lot about her students. Keep up with the work and you'll be fine. Go to SIPASS, study with your friends, etc.
Class was very hard mainly due to lack of explanation. And when someone asks a question, she would belittle the student. Previously loved chem, but this kind of took the joy out of it. She's trying, but she needs to teach students like people too. Also, make sure you go to SI pass because she won't go in depth on how to solve the homework.
I love Dr. Carpenter's class and her teaching style. A lot of people fail to recognize just how much she does for her students. She cares for each and every student and never turns anyone away when they ask for help. She's funny, a good listener and overall one of my favorite professors.
best professor I have had at UMBC hands down. you can tell she cares about every and every one of her students and genuinely just wants everyone to succeed. if she sees the class struggling, she does offer EC sometimes. very accessibly, do the work and practice problems she provides and you'll do fine! so grateful for her.
Dr. Carpenter, is by far the most understanding professor I have ever had. Although the material itself is pretty difficult, she offers extensive help during class and outside class time. She may be a bit overwhelming at first as she does have a very eccentric personality, but overall you'll love her. I 100% recommend choosing her! Good luck!
The topic was tough, but she gave us several opportunities and practice assignments for the exams. There were no curveballs - the practice and homework were exactly what was on the exams. It's not easy, but attend lectures, take notes, and student properly and you'll do fine. Try doing everything in advance though - procrastinating makes it harder.
Here is what to expect: -Tons of weekly homework online (not hard but a lot) - There are no lectures (at all), weekly slides posted - Assigned weekly "unit readings" to complete alongside hw -6 exams + Final -A lot of emails / youtube videos about random stuff She taught me more about her personal life than chemistry. Be ready to teach yourself.
She genuinely cares about her students and she's extremely willing to offer help where she can, but you have to put in the work too. She offered an exam retake but 30% of students did it. Only about 40/200 students attended Chem chat which is basically structured office hours. Attend Chem chat and use her study resources and you'll do great!
Maybe she's a good professor for class in person but when it comes to teaching online she is by far the worst professor that I've had. The tests are very heavily weighted and no matter what I do to prep for them and no matter how careful I am I always do poorly. She is also always extremely snarky and difficult to approach. Worst prof of the year
Workload is substantial, mostly because content is difficult, but she is very helpful when it comes to providing learning assistance. She teaches, hosts good review sessions, and actively encourages studying by making interactive practice and providing extra credit. Very understanding of deadline complications.
The class is definitely challenging and Dr carpenter helped. I will say she talks a lot about her personal life somedays more so than chemistry and is very sarcastic.
I took this class in Spring 2021 and I will just say that if it weren't for her spaced practice, I would definitely be failing. Make sure you do endless amounts of problems because half of the tests are based on that. Overall, she's an understanding teacher so if you miss something she'll help you out but she is very sarcastic.
She's a great professor. She can get a little bit passive aggressive sometimes but honestly, I don't even care because she helped my grade out A LOT. She gives a lot of extra credit and is super fair and understanding with grading. Tests are every other week so make sure to study well and definitely join the Discord for this class.
Amazing professor. Holds Chem chats to clear up any confusion with course content. Gave out tons of extra credit. Join the discord and do lots of practice problems and you'll be fine
This class is very heavy on you doing practice problems. If you don't practice, it will be that much more difficult. Make no mistake though Dr. Carpenter will do everything she can to help you. If you follow her suggestions and make use of what she offers (mainly chem chat and spaced practice) you can get at least a B.
dr. carpenter is okay. she is condescending sometimes. as for the work, it can be a lot and its pretty difficult at times. she set up a spaced practice thing for us that was VERY helpful so I recommend that if she offers it. do lots of practice problems and go to chem chat. take notes on lecture and skim the book briefly if u need it. u got this!!
This class was super easy with all the spaced practice, just do that and your'e set for the exams. Carpenter herself, she's a bit passive aggressive and wrote and sang us a song about how we shouldn't blame her if we fail, kinda weird but oh well. Honestly, she can be pretty passive aggressive and calls it being sassy, but she wants you to succeed.
Great communicator. Emails back almost instantly at most hours of the day. Exams are fair. Course material is tough. ChemChats are pretty good. Spaced practices will take up 10-15 hours a week. They are pretty new, and are a good idea, but are currently being executed pretty poorly, however when they actually work, they are good tools to learn.
lol this is the easiest class I have taken here. Do the spaced practice and you're fine. Exams are east but theres a lot of them. Carpenter gave a LOT of extra credit. i think Bass is slightly better at teaching though. Both great profs. Not hard at all if you put in effort :)
Adds new homework everyday. Would slap in the face if lectures were in person. Cringe lord of UMBC.
Changed the syllabus 3 times in the first 2 weeks. 103 total spaced practice assignments worth 25% of your grade. Homework due on Saturday, double the normal amount of homework due on Sunday. Professor thinks shes changing the world with her experimental teaching methods. Tells her students not to bombard her email. Avoid this class at all cost.
Overly excessive about homework where I feel it's counterproductive. Rather than learning, I was just trying to get answers in. Passive-aggressive and forgets that a lot of her students are taking other stem classes and simply don't have hours in their day to spend on just chem 102. The class itself is easy but her teaching style is not for me.
Gives out a truly obscene amount of homework. There's so much that it actually makes it impossible to find time to study for the class. at least 8 hours worth of assignments due on weekends and the exams have an insane variance in question difficulty so its impossible to know what to expect.
Dr. C is a mixed bag. She says she’s “easy to contact,” but that promise is betrayed when her emails complain about too many students contacting her. Her pacing is not helpful to students who want to work ahead. You will have 7-9 assignments a week, each lasting anywhere from 30-120 minutes. I feel overworked with no real academic payoff.
Dr.Carpenter is one of the worst professors I've had at UMBC. Be prepared to be doing an absurd amount of homework every single day including weekends with assignments taking between 1 to 3 hours depending on your aptitude with chemistry. She doesn't care about her students and has deluded herself into thinking she's "reinventing learning."
Carpenter is definitely controversial this semester. However, I personally loved her. She was super nice and enthusiastic about teaching. Go to chem talk! Email her! She is super sweet unless you are rude to her. It is homework heavy but it helped my grade sooo much. You get lots of practice and resources to pass the class.
Carpenter is a great prof. Be ready for homework, 1-2 assignments due every single night, unit modules due once a week, LCPs review due once a week, along with chem chats- which are not mandatory, as well as discussions. Tests were slightly hard, but very easy to get an A on, and as long as you do the homework(spaced practice) you should get an A.
Good god, this woman killed me with the amount of assignments due. We had at least one assignment due every day and on Sundays we'd have up to 3 assingments due. That does not include getting through the module that also has questions also. Did I learn anything...not really.
She is my 13th reason
HORRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE CHEM WITH HER. SHE PUT ROACHES IN MY DORM. She's my 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th reason Astaghfirallah. Her "system" of teaching is horrific and has given me PTSD. You have assignments due every single day including weekends, sometimes up to 3 assignments in a day. Would rate a -100000/10. Save yourself and your sanity.
Tbh I know alot of people complain about this class but it isn't too bad. However we do get assignments almost to every night, but it really is just homework, 2 exams, and discussion which isn't too bad. Homework is quick if you just read the textbook.
If you take this class, get ready to do homework every night, including on the weekends. Two exams - the midterm and the final. The midterm was units 1-11, the final is units 12-27 which I'm grateful for, but there's homework due during the week of the final still. Lectures aren't mandatory and you can learn of what you need from homework. Beware.
Like others have said: very controversial this semester. Some hated her; some enjoyed it. Daily assignments that lead up to bigger quizzes. I felt prepared enough with the amount of hwk that I didn't need extra help. I really enjoyed her way of teaching. Online unit modules were easy to follow most of the time. Not an easy A, but not too hard.
She genuinely cares. The weekend homework was annoying, but at the end of the day, it helps you learn the material. Just wish it wasn't as exhausting but if you do the homework its an easy A.
Avg homework (hw) has 11-17 questions with about 3-5min/problem. Max time is about 1.2hrs/hw IF you understand the content. Min time is ~15-30min. Some days will have 3 hw assignments. This not including required learning module (30min-3hrs).
Professor Carpenter has this philosophy where if we keep doing the same units over and over, it will be burned into our heads, which is good learning. The only thing is she makes us have homework due everyday including weekends, and they are only accessible 2 days out of the due date. Its tedious and some units are long. Only 2 exams, thats nice.
Was a pretty easy class honestly, tons of homework. People like to do stuff on the weekends and we had homework on the weekends so that was something but if you don't do anything on the weekends, its not that bad at all as each hw should only take you 30 minutes.
Dr. Carpenter is one of the best professors at UMBC. Be prepared to do a lot of homework. There will be homework due everyday, called Spaced practice. While it is a pain, it is really helpful and exam questions look similar to those on the homework. One of the kindest professors on campus and will go above and beyond for students.
Honestly, I thought the course was HORRIBLE at first, but the everyday assignments really do help you learn. Dr. Carpenter is truly caring and has mastered the concept of learning and awarding good grades based on LEARNING. I wish there weren't as many weekend assignments and I wish she didn't change the syllabus so many times, but it was all good.
She is an amazing professor that cares. If you follow clear direction an A is definitely possible!! She gives A LOT of opportunities to improve your grade in any way possible. The only issue I had was the weekend homeworks. It got annoying having to do chem everyday, but its definitely worth it for the A.
Way too many assignments. Some days we had 2-3 in addition to them also being every day. Carpenter was rude when you emailed her questions about the homework or the exams so don't bother with that. God forbid I try and email my professor! She changed the syllabus multiple times and is so proud of her teaching methods when they taught me nothing :)
Get ready for minimum 30 mins - 1 hr homework every single night including weekends. If you email her she will either not respond or give you a very condescending response. There is no extra credit or make up assignments but assignments are repeatable so keep going until you get an A on every homework and you'll do fine.
Realize it(homework website) is a blessing and a curse at the same time. Assignments are every day, sometimes up to three a day. The weekend assignments are the most annoying. She changed her syllabus a few times to accommodate students which I liked and genuinely care about students' performance. If you put in the work an A is very attainable.
I had prof.carpenter in spring 2021 online. She created the spaced learning for our class and it did wonders. I would not have passed without it. I was really scared of her in the beginning, but she really cares for her students and wants the best. Do your homework, watch the lectures, read the book, and most importantly practice and you will be ok
No idea how ANYONE likes this woman. It's extremely difficult to communicate w/ her. I feel like this class was supposed to be easier but instead I felt myself constantly being overwhelmed by the daily HW assignments, including the ones due on weekends. She lacks clarity as well. I'd write an entire thesis on how awful she made this course for me.
Homework was awful. I spent every day crying because there were assignments due at 8 AM every day and then due at 11:59 PM every night, including weekends. Horrible. Would never traumatize myself like this again.
Okay teacher. Would not round my grade to an A when I was .02% off the A. She also sang songs during lecture? That was kinda odd.
Professor Carpenter is a great person overall but the course itself is really overwhelming. You will have about 10+ assignments per week and it's legit nonstop till the final week of classes. And the final exam had a lot of information that the class never even went over so prepare staying up extremely late doing Unit modules and Spaced Practices.
Yes there's homework and pre-class assignments, but they're 40% of the grade. I'd rather have that than 85% of the grade being tests. She was nice as a professor, though she doesn't actually teach much in class. Instead she uses polling which can be a time-waster since only a few questions are covered in one class. But she gave a 1% bonus for it
The attendance wasn't mandatory, but I'd highly recommend going to class, so you can get extra grade for participation. Space practice was REALLY annoying, but do it! It will do A LOT to help your grade because its 30% of the entire course.
good lecturer but sometimes over explains concepts. definitely do the optional practice on blackboard. there are homework assignments almost every night or every other day on aktiv that open three days prior to the deadline. hard course so def practice- 70% is from 3 exam and final, 15% homework, and 15% discussion.
hard class, but ended w/ A through hard work. IF YOU DON'T FULLY UNDERSTAND SOMETHING, DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF ASSUMING IT WON'T BE ON THE EXAM. no curves at all. to do well, do the optional Blackboard practices + Aktiv follow-ups. didn't like carpenter's attitude toward people asking questions tho - actin like ppl know should know already :-/
The midterms weren't terrible. But then we had the final using ACS questions. I'd highly recommend just buying the study guide because none of the previous exams or even homework can prepare you for the way that the final words its questions. 70% of the class earned a D or lower on the final. Use that information as you will.
Didn't find this class too hard, just do blackboard practices along the way. Didn't like how discouraging she was, literally laughing when we got a question wrong + expecting us to do bad. Her explanations were overcomplicated to the point where I had to tune her out in class. Exams 1-3 are exactly like BB, find a ACS source to practice for final.
Midterms weren't hard as long as you came to class and did the practices outside of class. Final was really really hard, but she curved nearly 10% on it and lowered the grade needed to get the next letter grade (so for example a C was a 67 or smth.) A bit petty as a professor but her method of 100s of homework really do help you learn the material.
This class was very time-consuming, I would spend hours on end on blackboard practices and Aktiv practice to really understand and excel in the math and just enough to get an A. Professor would go over in class how to do them and do polling questions which were helpful but tests were not easy unless you put in the time and work for it.
I honestly do not understand how this teacher got her credentials. Explains Chem in the most confusing way possible. If you're taking her class, make sure to watch lots of youtube videos on the course content or else you will fail
I do not even understand how she is still working. Would openly flirt with certain male students during lecture (?!?!), did not make it a point to know me or remember my name, would actively condescend anyone who dared ask a question during lecture, and would explain concepts in the most backwards and confusing way. YouTube helped some.
CHEM 102 can be hard if it doesn't click, and Dr. Carpenter doesn't make it any easier. She provides ample material for self-practice. But if you don't understand smth she will most likely say you should have learned it in 101, and will not explain it further (even if the whole class has the same issue). If confused go to youtube, not her.
She's amazing! Her lectures are always so fun and she's always very energetic and passionate! Make sure that you don't skip lectures though because you can easily get lost. CHEM101 is a heavy class
Dr. Carpenter is an overall ok professor but rushes through lectures/explanations. For this being CHEM101, you are expected to have a fair amount of background chemistry knowledge. It is extremely easy to get lost or fall behind. Be prepared to spend at least 30-40 hours a week doing chemistry. Assignment, quiz, and homework heavy. Difficult exams!
Carpenter was okay. The way she taught during lecture felt rushed and harder to understand than Bass's lectures. The course itself is doable but requires a lot of work outside of class. Exams are fair but the final is difficult because the Profs dont make it. Do not slack off on regular exams. The final is worth more of your grade and it's harder!
Unenrolled because class does not set you up for success. If you struggle with chemistry I would recommend submitting a verification of transferability form and taking your chem requirements at your nearest community college. Get a C or better at community college - it fulfills chem requirement, grade will not count towards GPA, and it is cheaper.
her lectures are not helpful at all. you will learn something in the reading quiz the night before which is completely different from the lecture the next day
Tara is my worst chemistry professor, the load is so heavy and she is not trying to make it easy for us. We are failing and she says "I don't know what to do you guys anymore since all of you get good grades on poll but fail the exams". I advise taking the course outside at any other community college instead of attending with her.
I notice that a lot of people hate on Tara due to their poor performance in both chem 1 and 2, but I truly would put a lot of that blame on the individual. Her exams can be hard, but she genuinely tries her best with extra credit and assisting us, a lot of people just choose to do less than the bare minimum and then blame her for their poor grade.
Def would suggest to take at a community college. There's alot of work and she doesn't even give students enough time in order to do it. Class is very exam heavy and even if you get a 100% on everything else you will most likely end up with a D. The exam are very and when i say very VERY! difficult. Would not take again and literally changed my maj
Carpenter gets a bad rap but honestly, as long as you show up to lecture as best you can, attend Discussion, practice using the Blackboard practice and review the practice exams, you'll atleast notch a B. Exams make a huge chunk of your grade though! The people who complain are mostly those who treat it like highschool (freshmen)
Dr. Carpenter is a great professor, I wish she was here the full semester though because it really would have helped me more with the final few units w titration. Extra credit was added once more after exam 2, though I think it would've helped me personally more if it was before exam 2. Overall this class is not difficult at all, so don't worry.
Your performance in a class with Carpenter will depend on your interest in Chem and quality of prereqs. If you have a solid understanding and interest, you'll do well because there's a lot of practice. If you took 101 at a CC or AP, you'll likely struggle since carpenter doesn't review anything because "you learned that in 101", when many did not.
The worst professor I have been with so far. She couldn't teach well, nor match what she teaches with the Exams. Trying what you have learned is so hard. The other helping resources she keeps on mentioning are completely useless. I reached out to tutors, si session, youtube videos & the textbook, but all was useless.
Dr. Carpenter is someone who doesn't put up with nonsense, and I love her for that. Even though it may seem scary, her demanding your full attention pays off tenfold and she absolutely wants every student to succeed. She'll respond to every email and almost nothing will stop her from holding office hours. She's a very smart and kind professor.
Although she is a nice person, i don't really like the way she teaches. I learn absolutely nothing from lectures and I just go there for attendance. I've barely been passing chem 101/102 w a C/C+. It is a very difficult course, I'd rather take it at a community college and earn an A than deal with this type of stress.
Even as someone who did well in the class, many things could have been done better. Random topics from one slide will be featured on three exam questions, and other things she stresses to study will be mysteriously absent. She can be demeaning when she responds to questions or criticisms, I recommend SI Pass or TA's for advice heavily over her.
While I have Professor Bass over her as an overall chemistry professor, Dr. Carpenter is more than capable of teaching. Even though you might receive a slick comment from her, do not be afraid to ask questions because chem 102 content is a significantly more challenging course than 101. UTILIZE SI PASS AND EXTRA CREDIT.
Professor Carpenter is a great professor, she is very tough on rules and grading, but when you are teaching 250+ students at a time you have to be. As long as you attend the lectures, pay attention, and submit your assignments on time, you'll be fine in her courses.
She's a very good teacher and her lectures are easy to follow along with since she is so dynamic. There is a lot of homework and practice problems, but I feel like those are necessary in order to grasp the concepts taught. The exams can vary in difficulty but tend to be pretty difficult so you have to study the material well.
I took this class in the summer and it was definitely hard, but the homework helped a lot in understanding the material. I also feel like she rushed a bit in her lectures but that was understandable, being a summer class. I still really enjoyed the class though, it was obvious she loves chemistry and wants her students to as well.
Tara can be intense, but her high standards really pay off. Stay on top of the material and utilize resources like unstuckstudy ai, and you'll likely do well. The workload is manageable if you put in the effort.
Good at teaching and knowledgable but she lectures quite fast and it's hard to retain anything unless you actually do the reading beforehand. Need to read the textbook because the slides from class are not enough. The exams are okay, but you have to really know what you're doing to do well. Gives a lot of resources and opportunities for help.
The class was quite tough and had a HUGE homework load and Dr. Carpenter sometimes moves through lectures quite fast but she goes out of her way to provide resources to help students succeed, including extremely good lecture videos, reading guides, and practice assignments. (I suggest making notes on the videos before class to ask questions.)
An enthusiastic professor, who is willing to take the time to provide content related resources to help her students succeed. Lectures are just a slideshow of the assigned chapters in the textbook, so they can feel redundant to attend, but with practice questions provided in these lectures, it can make for solid review.
Horrible would recommend taking the course at community college if possible. They make the 101 class hard asf for no reason. If you are not a science-type major like me, DO NOT TAKE CHEM or tbh any science here!!
They redid 101 for Fall 2024. Lectures were very helpful and slides made sense. Plenty of opportunities to practice in class. Good personality which makes all the difference. But it is easy to lose track of due dates, since everything is on a separate site. If you miss a due date, there is 0way to take it since it locks. Just need to pay attention.
pretty hard class for an intro course, very doable as long as u put in the effort (which I didnt really do but I recommend doing that if u want an A). final is not made by profs, it is an ACS exam so I recommend using the official practice book (can be found for free online as well) for that from the beginning of the semester.
The professor is good when it comes to lectures but it's easy to understand if you do the reading & homework prior to the lecture. She gave an extra credit opportunity & a curve. Reading amount is intense, but not hard if you keep up. Overall she's a good prof. & the class isn't difficult if you put in the effort(the occasional late night studying)
Very chill lectures, notes posted online. Sometimes lectures a tad fast and there's a decent amt of online work, but thats it. The questions on exams are pretty chill if you have a general understanding of the concepts and are good at mcq.
Enthusiastic and wants students to succeed. It's important that you understand the material and its applications since the practice questions in lecture are key to passing exams. Make sure you are able to do them on your own and get an AI to generate similar problems for you and you'll be good. You will not pass if you wait the week before to study
As long as you show up to class and pay attention with some late nights up before exams you should be fine.
She's nice but I don't like her teaching method. Her lectures are not helpful at all because all she does is just read off of her slides. I know some people who didn't even go to her lectures and just reviewed her slides, which are posted online, on their own. If anything, I learned more through RealChem which is an online textbook that we used.
She wasn't terrible, and the class wasn't too hard, but the professors made it harder than it needed to be. Lots of homework on program with many glitches (realchem), exams were disjointed from what was taught in class. Exams were significantly harder than any of the materials she provided in class. She does post past exams, though, which helps.
Professor Carpenter was a great beginner friendly professor for those who need a refresher on Chemistry or haven't taken chem before. I would highly recommend watching some beginner chemistry 101 videos and just getting prepared before taking the class as it does have some new and difficult material and the class moves quickly so go to tutoring!
I had Carpenter for 101 and 102. Made a B in both. She makes fair exams, everything you need to know is on her ppt slides w/ practice, gives practice exams before real exams & gives good extra credit in 102. Bonus 2% on final grade, final was adjusted, bonus point on some exams, extra 5% on highest exam grade. Put in the effort! It's not an easy A.
Dr.Carpenter is pretty understanding and offers lots of extra credit through homework and exploration assignments. There are 4 exams total, and she adds an extra 5% to your lowest exam score, which helps. But the exams especially the ACS final, can be very different from what we learned in class. Our regular exams don't fully prepare us for the final.
Dr. Carpenter is a very caring and energetic professor. Her lectures were amazing and she really knows how to break down concepts. She is very accessible after class and she genuinely wants to see her students succeed and is TRULY passionate about chemistry and helping students learn. All her exams were helpful for the ACS final.
Dr. Carpenter is a great professor but the material can be difficult bc it's fast-paced!! Her slides help w the exams a lot. In 102 there's a lot of overlapping material between the exams so you have to retain previous units. The final is written by ACS. The HWs and readings aren't hard just understanding the material in time for weekly discussions
Dr. C is an amazing professor, the course is tough but she does her best to make the information easy to digest. Possibly one of the nicest and most understanding professors I 100% recommend her to anyone having to take Chem 102!
Enthusiastic lecturer, straight forward exams, and if you put effort into the class (show up to lectures, do the token activities etc) she will match it with extra credit and curves. Chem 102 definitely isn't easy specially over the summer with lab, but I felt that she helped make it very manageable for us all. Just make sure you put in the effort!
Awesome professor. The material requires WORK outside class, but it is manageable. Her slides are VERY helpful for exams, and the curve is STRONG. Just study the slides, don't fall behind, and go to lecture as much as you can.
The class isn't an easy one, but she puts in a lot of effort to make her students understand. Her slideshows are VERY helpful, I reccommend taking notes off the presentations over RealChem to save some time. Show up to class --> 3% curve on all the exams. She truly cares about her students, and it's clear she's very passionate about the subject.
I love Dr. Carpenter as a person, but I think she goes too fast when reviewing certain concepts and it makes it very difficult to understand. The whole class feels rushed, and we tend to move on and add too much too early. I dislike RealChem, but I know some people enjoy it very much. Overall, I did not really enjoy this class, which is a shame.
Participation in lectures is mandatory and graded. The lectures themselves are really fast-paced because you're expected to read the material beforehand. It's really easy to fall behind because they're are pretty much assignments/ readings every day. The slides are really helpful, and a lot of practice work is given for you to be successful.
I wished for existence to cease just because of the professor and the course. Go to the CC, never set foot at UMBC for CHEM, never, this is the greatest sin of my life.
