She's extremely awkward... very soft, high-pitched voice. However, she did write the lab manual so she knows what she's talking about and is always available for help. The Environmental Conference assignment sucked.
She has a very interesting voice and a great sense of humor. At times, I was very bored about the subject matter and she tends to go on tangents and get off topic. She helps with quiz scores if people miss a few questions as a whole class. She does not reply to emails until at least a week late... :S I enjoyed the class though
sweet lady, can be tough at times though. You need to actually study for her quiz's and exams or else you will do terrible. She enjoys what she is teaching and will help you anytime you need. Terrible grader though, she never posts anything!
Dr. Herring has a baby voice, that being said she is also one of the sweetest, most helpful professors I've taken. She will do anything to help her students. Her tests are hard, you will have to study. She does a quiz over ever chapter. Her lab is easy, there are TONS of projects. She explains things in detail, and you can tell she loves science.
She is such a sweet lady. It is super easy to space out in her class or not pay attention all together. She doesn't make it too interesting. It's also easy to skip this class as long as you read over the notes on blackboard.
She was great! Awkward, but great. She was clear in her lectures, and was a funny teacher. Her tests were fair, and as long as you study some you should be fine. Lab was a little tough because it was so long, but regardless I would totally recommend her.
Tara Herring is a great teacher. She loves what she is teaching and she simply loves teaching. Her tests follow straight from her study guides, so filling them out helps easily pass tests. Study for quizzes, but if you study they are not that bad. I highly recommend her classes.
Dr. Herring was very easy, but I also felt like I learned a quite a bit. I took her in the summer so she was very relaxed. She did ramble alot and LOVED questions regarding biology, but she would always look them up so by the next class period, everyone forgot what led to the question in the first place. I strongly recommend Dr. Herring.
Very sweet lady! She basically just reads from the notes though. If you can teach yourself, you could skip class. The tests are definitely college level tests. Overall, a very good professor!
Professor Herring is super nice. I'd love to take her again. Lab is fun and necessary to attend, and there is a field trip! She posts notes on BlackBoard so lecture isn't necessary. She likes to take a while to grade to really check grammar, but her grading is lenient.
She is the sweetest t professor I've ever had. She is extremely smart and has so much to offer.
She is the sweetest professor I've ever had. She is extremely smart and has so much to offer.
nice but lectures are boring. group projects in lab. I had a GA for lab and she wasn't very helpful so my overall grade suffered. Covers a lot of material in a short period of time so studying on your own is a must.
Tara is one of the sweetest professors I've ever met. She knew most student's names and majors! She is very knowledgeable in her area, but also remains very humble and tries to relate to students on a personal level. It's hard to not like her.
Tara is super sweet and passionate about what she teaches! But since this is biology for educators, a lot of the material goes over the students' heads. Lab is actually fun and easy, but lecture goes on forever. She posts the powerpoints online which makes it tempting to skip, but try not to because she does a lot of explaining!
I loved having Tara this semester! She is so sweet and super helpful. Her lectures are pretty long, but she does a lot of explaining and answering questions. She started a new thing where she asks questions for participation points- so make sure you're in class! She also goes in greater detail in class. I would for sure take her again!
Tara is super sweet but lets students walk all over her. Don't take her for lab- you will never get your grades back. She provides study guides for all tests. There are 5 10 point quizzes and 2-3 tests, plus the final. She really cares about what she teaches and is willing to go the extra mile for you if you ask for help. Would recommend.
Dr. Herring is so passionate about biology and teaching; she wants everyone to succeed. There are at least two tests, and studying is a must. Print the study guide at the beginning of the unit, and fill it out as you go. Use the unit tests to study for the final. She asks application questions rather than definition questions.
Tara is a little different but super sweet! She is very passionate about her job and wants to help everyone. The lectures are long and somewhat boring due to all the information. There are in class quizzes but are not too difficult. She does not grade quickly and you will not know what you have in the class until final grades come out.
She is very hard to hear. Sit in the front if you want to do well. She tends to get off topic often, but is very passionate about biology.
Tara is really sweet. She makes a lot of jokes and she's awkwardly funny so it makes class go by fast. A lot of group projects.. she gets off topic a lot so you won't cover all of the material for the tests. You might get to 2 tests. Grading takes months. Overall, she is a good teacher. Just SUPER unorganized.
Dr. Herring is the best! She is so so sweet and will help you in anyway that she can! I love how she has open labs so that you can make up any lab that you missed. You really need to go to every single lab because attendance is a HUGE part of your grade. I would definitely recommend her to anyone!
Dr. Herring is a sweet professor and is passionate about Biology. Questions from the quiz come straight from the powerpoint. Watch the videos provided by the textbook for each chapter for clarity. Be ready to wait for more than a week or two after a quiz or exam to see your grades. She does a good job in explaining the materials tho.
Boring and annoying.
Lectures are long and pretty boring because she is monotoned. However, she is a very sweet lady and is very helpful. She doesn't take attendance for lectures but she asks questions and if you aren't there when she calls on you randomly you get points taken off. tests go directly with the notes and book.
I took Tara for Biology for Educators. Her tests and quizzes were pretty hard and I went to most of her lectures. I even studied and still received poor grades on exams. The lab was not difficult at all and saved my grade in that class. I would say do not take her but if you want to be a teacher you have to.
Ms. Herring loves to lecture and she moves very slowly. The class can be tough if you do not grasp all of the concepts. She does not take attendance but will randomly cold call on people to give participation points. The lab portion of the class really helps to keep your grade a float. The lecture class only has a few test and quizzes.
This class is so easy! The tests are on the difficult side, but there is so much extra credit to make up for it. The lectures are long and boring, but Tara tries to make them fun by telling stories. The lab portion will boost your grade if you go to EVERY lab! That is so important for your grade! Going to lecture is not required but helpful!
Tara is nice lady who has a lot of passion for her students and biology. That being said, she lectures forever. We didn't even get through the whole FIRST UNIT this semester. She will occasionally call on people in lecture, but posts her powerpoint on BB. Attend lab, study for the chapter quizzes and tests, you'll be fine.
Dr. Herring is a genuinely kind lady. She covers the material very slowly and takes an extensive amount of time to get non-scantron tests and assignments graded and back to you. There are 2 tests, a quiz to cover each chapter in lecture and a comprehensive final. If you have her for lab expect to be there for the full time every time.
She is super nice, but her lectures are dry and her voice is super soft and quiet. You could skip this class and study the slides she posts on blackboard, but she call on people from her roster at random to ask questions and takes off if your'e not there. Her labs are disrespectful. You have to take this class, but pray you don't get her for lab.
Tara is very nice; however, if you want to hear her, you need to sit up front. This can be difficult to do if you are not able to arrive to class early. She pretty much just reads off of her powerpoint, which is a bit boring. Throughout the semester, she will call randomly on people for attendance and take away points if you're not there.
If you go to lecture, you have to sit in the front because she talks VERY quietly, even though it is a lecture of over 100 people. Find out when the quizzes are and then study the slides at home - lecture is totally optional. She keeps her lab classes for the WHOLE 3 hours so pray you get a GA for lab. GO TO LAB. Easy points and quizzes.
She is quiet, but from the fourth row I can still hear her okay. She's super nice and funny. I didn't buy the textbook and am doing decent in the class. Quizzes in lab every week but a lot of projects. She starts calling on people for attendance about halfway through semester.
Dr. Terring is a very sweet lady, and is a decent professor. She just talks very quietly, so it is hard to hear her. However, she is very easy to get a hold of outside of class, and she will work with you.
If you don't sit up front you won't hear a single thing all lecture.
Super sweet lady. Lectures can get VERY boring. I usually worked on other things and listened to her in the background. Usually had a quiz every few chapters. Two exams, midterm, & final. She provides power points and study guides on blackboard (how I passed the class). The class can get pretty unorganized, but it was an easy A.
I never had Dr. Herring teach our Bio111 class, though I had one of her TA's teach us. Dr. Herring seems like a really sweet lady, though, from the times that I spoke with her. Kristen Sardina, our TA, was pretty fantastic. She always helped us when there were problems, made sure we knew what we needed for quizzes, and made Bio111 a painless course
She does not put in grades quickly. I did not know my midterm test grade until after I took final at the end of the semester. She is a good professor, but is very messy. The course was pretty easy. I would take her again if I had the opportunity.
I went to the lecture portion of this class maybe 3 or 4 times outside of quizzes and tests. As long as you go to lab and attend lecture on quiz/test/participation days (2 per semester) you'll do well. Tons of extra credit in lab, easy tests. She's just super quiet and the lectures are dry. Take notes off the slides she posts on BB instead.
All she does is reads off her power points and will go off on tangents. Her study guides don't help. She is unprepared for class most times. I could do everything I do in class in my room. Doesn't explain things very well. She takes entirely to long to go over material for a test and isn't that concerned with grading.
Lots of powerpoint slides. She basically gives you all the answer to the homework. You do a experiment everyday with your group. If you skip you can make up labs on Friday's. She knows her stuff.
Tara is a very sweet lady and very knowledgeable about biology. However, she does not know how to convey her knowledge in a way that not-sciencey people can understand. She does try her best and is willing to help you, but the class is still hard and very detailed. She's fine but I wouldn't take her again. You'll get through it!!
Tara is a great professor! She has an extra credit question on every quiz during lab and several other extra credit opportunities. She is a slow grader and soft spoken, but she is passionate about her class.
Tara Herring is a great PERSON, not so much of a great teacher. I've had no previous BIO classes before this and it was expected from both Tara and Regina (Lab instructor) that we had it. Tara's lectures were honestly so boring it was hard to stay awake. Taking notes was worthless since she sped through her powerpoints. I wouldn't take her again.
The lectures are very boring, but Tara is such a sweet lady that cares about what she's teaching. The material isn't too overly difficult.
Very quiet in speaking, lecture is straight off the power point which she puts on blackboard, be ready to stay the entire class time for both lecture and lab, tests are very similar to study guides, very goofy but hilarious
I have never had a professor so passionate about their subject. She really knows the details and is highly motivated when it comes to getting involved in the course. It is recommended to go to class, especially the labs. At the end of the semester, there are options to receive extra credit in order to boost your grade.
Tara is a great person, but an OK professor. She READS the information, she doesn't actually TEACH it, so like 99% of the info you'll have to teach yourself. She will work with you outside of class, and she does care about her students. The course content is SO boring & she is often unprepared for class, but she uses up the whole time, each time.
My least favorite professor but a really nice person. She did not teach or go into depth with any concept. Her lectures are not interesting and are extremely easy to skip. She is very vague when it comes to what material to study for her tests and quizzes. It is a "teach yourself" sort of class.
Tara is an amazing person and cares about her students. Lectures can be boring but she's so passionate about teaching and tries to make everyone laugh. In class quiz are pretty easy but I find the test to be very hard. Lots of extra credit is offered so make sure to take advantage of it! Attendance is not mandatory but I would recommend going.
Dr. Herring is a wonderful lady! Her love for biology is apparent. Go to lecture and lab, print off the power points she posts and study the study guides she provides on Blackboard. I enjoyed her class and would take another one of her classes. Only slight downfall is, she is soft spoken, so sit up front! She will answer ANY questions you have.
easy class. attendance is mandatory and a good amount of extra credit. quizzes every week over last weeks lab.
Tara is the sweetest person ever and genuinely wants to see her students succeed. With that being said, she is the most boring lecturer ever and be prepared to stay the full time every lab and lecture. It can be difficult to show up to lecture but if you can push yourself to do that then you'll be fine.
Super caring professor but her lectures are so boring! She reads off the powerpoint for an hour and 15 minutes and all the powerpoints are online. It is impossible to pay attention. You could easily get away with skipping every lecture and still passing but the tests are hard so I wouldn't recommend it. Hardest class I've taken.
Overall shes really nice but the material is kinda hard to learn. Take her TA as your lab instructer as they always got out at least an hour n half before Tarras lab did.
Tara is a super kind lady, but her lectures are so boring and she is so soft spoken so you can barely hear her. She also takes a long time to grade assignments so it is very stressful.
She is one of the nicest professors I've ever had, that being said if you haven't taken Bio for a while, you are screwed. She is awful for lecture since she is so soft spoken but I loved having her for lab. definitely, have to work for your grade.
Her lectures are so boring and hard to stay awake in.
Tara was super sweet, but she is a very quiet lecturer. She takes a long time to grade assignments, but she is a fair grader. This class is bio "for educators," but it doesn't really have anything to do with education. She does a good job trying to make connections though.
Sweet lady and loves/knows a lot about biology. Lectures are pretty boring and she is soft-spoken. Sit closer to the front. One time each semester when she does surprise EC attendance, so just make yourself go. She loves when kids actually show up. 10 pts EC when you go to every lab. Study quizzes for tests. Tip: fill out study guide during classes
The lecture was an hour 15 minutes twice a week along with a 3-hour lab. All she does it read off the PowerPoint and does not go into any detail. It is currently April 27th, and the class started in Jan. We are now just having our first test over 7 chapters. I and everyone I know switched her class to pass/fail. She's crazy and I don't recommend.
Switched to online due to covid-19. Emails sent at any given point of the day AND night are extreme. Expected to learn 5-7 ch. loaded w/ terms for a 100 level course and are just taking our first lecture test 3 months in. 2 more tests ahead, another project, with little grading done. Hard to know where ones grade is 2 weeks left. Shes too chaotic
Before COVID 19 the class was hard, but when we changed to online we had more busy work. We had our first "exam" 3 1/2 months after we started and the average on the test was a 47%. Everyone I have talked to has changed to pass/fail. There isn't trust when it comes to taking quizzes after being accused of cheating on 1 multiple choice question.
Easy class, good teacher, would recommend
Her tests are absolutely ridiculously hard and long but most of your grade comes from the lab projects. Lecture attendance doesnt really matter unless you have a test or quiz but lab attendance is really important.
Tara is nice and understanding about covid-19. I will say that she is quizzing us 2 weeks behind the material, and we haven't even taken the first exam and it is October. There is so much content and I am worried.
She is an amazing lab professor, but not a good lecture teacher. She tries her best and is very nice. She never responds to emails, so be prepared to speak up if something goes wrong. Not horrible, but she does her best.
Herring knows the content but has difficulty teaching it to students in an organized manner. Also she likes to put trick questions on tests so read questions carefully. She gives out study guides for tests however they aren't the same level of difficulty as the tests.
good professor, have to study for quizzes and tests, couple of group projects, lots of extra cred opportunities
She is a very nice person, but with that being said, she is soooo chaotic and unorganized. We had our first exam literally after spring break. She gives study guides for the exams, but they do NOT match the difficulty of the exams. She gets off topic in lecture often. She uses lockdown browser, and does not grade on a curve even though we all fail.
Bio lab woth Herring was easy but boring. Final is 2 parts, a lab exam, and a lab group project. Exam was easy and the group project is easy if you have a decent group. Had weekly quizzes on lockdown over the labs. Several other group projects throughout the semester. A few extra credit opportunities. You'll get an A if you put in medium effort.
I don't have an issue with her as a person, but I do as a professor. She is very chaotic and she sends out announcements and emails late at night. We only had one exam besides the final. The final exam was the hardest test I have ever taken. She is very sweet but fails as a teacher. This is a VERY hard class, especially for a level 100 course.
She is really helpful to have in the lab and is very sweet and understanding. I was failing her class but managed to get it to an A with the extra credit opportunities she gave and turning in late work. Definitely fill out the lab manual because the weekly quizzes are based on the material in it. Answers emails quickly and always willing to help.
This class is solely quizzes, group projects, and one semi final exam. The PowerPoints posted are not very helpful in order to take the quizzes and the one exam is basically over everything you learn in the semester. She is a very nice professor, but the class is not fun.
Tara is very sweet, understanding and accommodating. She lectures until the very last second of class and assigns projects until the last day of classes. She almost always gives an extension of some sort for everything. Sends out long announcements late at night. It makes her sad when no one participates in lecture. She is VERY knowledgeable.
Great professor, easy to work with, several group projects and labs are slightly difficult
Dr. Herring is a very kind professor if you get to know her. She lectures to the very last second. There are quizzes on each chapter of the textbook/lecture that require Lockdown Browser and a face cam. She sends out announcements frequently & usually late at night. I would recommend taking the lab portion with one of the GAs instead if possible.
I am sure Mrs. Herring is a great person outside of the classroom, however I found her lectures SO boring. She talks all the way up to the last minute of class and drags the class out. There are also so many unnecessary assignments kinda like busy work that I did not feel like they benefited to the class at all. Same thing with the lab assignments.
Dr Herring is a very sweet person however her lectures are long and boring. The class BIO100 itself is structured badly and relies on a lot of quizzes. One thing that I love her for is how generous she is with extra credit. As long as you do the extra credit you will pass the class.
She might talk a lot but she is very sweet and deserves respect
Ended up not going to lectures after the first two months and did amazing in the class. Posts the notes ahead of time and the test were easy if you study before. Easy to talk to and get feedback from.
Grade is based on the quizzes and tests. No homework. She gets on tangents unrelated to the current topic and lectures until the very last second of class. She does provide a lot of extra help and resources to help you be successful though.
She's a very sweet lady, however, lectures were very boring and she went off on a lot of unrelated tangents. I skipped the lectures the last half of the semester and just studied the powerpoints and did great. She told us that we would need the textbook but we never once used it. Lab is almost three hours long and is a major waste of time.
She is a very sweet lady but my problem with her was that she basically made her students get behind in a class because of minor inconveniences. Towards the end of the year it got really stressful because there was a lot to catch up on. The class is based off of 2 group assignments, quizzes, and a final exam. She does offer extra credit throughout.
Labs occur once weekly and a quiz is given over the lab the following week. She goes over all information before the quiz, so it's easy to get an A even if you don't remember the content. There are several group projects but they aren't difficult at all. She gives extra credit and works with you if you miss class. Great professor!
Very kind and understanding. Loves what she does and is very good at teaching through multiple methods appealing to all learning styles. Very standard course organization, very manageable amount of work. Group projects can feel a bit overwhelming but are ultimately to help boost your grade. She wants you to pass the course and learn something.
her lectures are very dull
Professor Herring was by far the best professor I had this past semester. She has a great passion for the subject and cares about her students. Plus, she often gives extra credit on random days if you attend her lectures. She gives study guides for every chapter that follow the test criteria perfectly. She truly wants every student to succeed.
TA taught:Vic. I would rec him. He is very chill and doesn't try to make it harder than it needs to be. Extra credit was offered. Don't be afraid to ask him q. Ive seen Tara around and she seems very nice but I have not met her. I would take a class with her bc she seems nice and chill. Quiz heavy and 2 group projects (all classes).
Ms. Herring may be a little boring to listen to, but she is very instructive and good with analogies. Any time I had problems with the material, Ms. Herring would stay after class and talk me through my questions. You have to apply yourself to learn in this class.
Had to get the textbook, which was pretty expensive, but rarely ever read from it. Mostly used for homework questions. Got extra credit very often, usually for in-class feedback or sometimes just showing up to class when attendance was low.
Her lectures are super hard to follow, she reads directly off the slides, and it is pretty slow paced. There is lots of extra credit opportunities and she means well. Tests and quizzes are difficult. STUDY!
Tara is the sweetest person ever! her class isn't the easiest but she is willing to help in any way! Take her!!!
She hates when people show up late or are tired and miss lab. She can be very sweet and kind sometimes but sometimes she wants her class to be the most important class, you have so take it seriously. She grades light and has long lectures and labs. She will take up the whole lecture time so never expect to leave early or on time.
Lecture: Dr herring is a super understanding person and is funny. She truly wants to help as best she can when you take initiative. She teaches using lots of different learning styles. She clearly loves what she does. Lab: Weekly quizzes only 10 questions but very hard
Very long lectures read word for word off the board. Very lenient on taking exams if the date is not right for you and extending deadlines for homework as long as you communicate.
Great & comprehensive professor. I was pretty drowned in work, school, personal life &Dr. Herring was flexible & understanding. Highly recommend you take her. She made an 8-week Biology course very tolerable. Do all assignments, fill out study guides as you go, & just make sure you memorize and know how everything works & this class is an easy A!
She is straight up rude. She will pause lectures to be rude and lecture us on stuff that isn't relevant to bio at all. Today she told us she wishes we had shock collars on so she could shock us all. like what… she is rude. She accused me of cheating because she saw my mouth moving while I was trying to read the question in my head to process.
I actually despise this class. Every time I have to go I wonder why the universe decided to keep me alive for it. She cannot teach at all, she talks to adults like we are literal children, she absolutely hates letting you leave class after you finish the test. She is not a good instructor and if you can avoid her do so at all cost. You'll be happy.
She can be crazy since she would get on people about leaving and say some interesting statements Her lecture always go for the whole time and the quizzes and exams can be challenging. However, you can really tell how passionate she is about what she is doing and simply wants the best for her students. With this, she does round up her end grades.
Don't take at 8am!!! She's a good professor and passionate in what she teaches. However, she is very strict on attendance. She hates when you show up late and act tired. Don't expect to ever leave early she may even hold you a few minutes past. Overall, the course work was easy but there is a quiz every week. There are also two group projects.
be ready learn, take notes, and for bio for educators she'll say you need the textbook but you won't ,barley use it this semester. Buy the lab notebook
Dr. Herring is a caring professor who uses various teaching styles. While lectures can be slow-paced, she provides ample extra credit and resources. Tests are challenging, so study hard using tools like Unstuck study alongside the textbook to succeed. Overall, a rewarding course.
I took a lab that was assigned to Tara but was really taught entirely by one of her GAs. She made it so easy it was impossible to get a bad grade. There are two group projects/presentations, so be ready for that. One time Tara came in during lab and accidentally knocked my pencil case into the trash can, proceeding to apologize profusely.
Tara Was a great professor! She was very personable and understanding of outside-the-classroom circumstances. She was very intentional during lectures and made sure each student got the help they needed.
She will talk and talk for the entirety of the lecture class, and gets very disappointed when people are not paying attention. Oftentimes the information we are quizzed over is not nearly as complex as how in-depth she will go to explain concepts. It is difficult to pay attention when I know most of what she says won't be on the quizzes/tests
Tara is a nice teacher but there are some times where she might seem a little bit over the top. She is very stingy about attendance and she will rarely let class out early. She also expects people to listen and answer questions in lecture. She does provide a huge extra credit opportunity that can add 30 points to your grade so that is nice!
