The course itself is really straightforward. However, her expectation on a two page report is beyond ridiculous. She doesn't clarify what contents she want and she is super picky about the grammar. She is marking harder than an English course!!! Very unreasonable.
She appears to be unclear at the beginning, but if you attend class and go to her for clarification, you'll realize that she is extremely helpful and clear. She is one of the most patient profs I've seen and she goes out of her way to ensure fairness. She'll actually email you personally if she feels like you deserve better!!
Stayed well beyond her office hours to help students before the exam.
Awesome teacher. She has intensive corporate experience. Therefore, her teaching style is very practical!!! Highly recommended!
She is very experienced. Her classes are fun and useful.
Tara is one of the best profs on the business faculty. If you want to enjoy and understand Finance (not just memorize), she is the one you should take your course with. Very clear requirements, awesome attitude to students and very engaging lectures. Her classes are never boring.
Love this prof! One of the best at SFU! Not only does she know what she's talking about but she makes a genuine effort to make sure you do well if you sees you're a hardworking student.
One of the best professor I've ever had, she is always happy to help. Before the exams, she even offered online discussion room and answered questions in the mid-night. Her class is extremely helpful and useful. Make sure u do all the tasks she gives and you will do good. I enjoyed her lectures.
I really do not like the way she teaches this course, as she treats it as an upper-level business course. In fact, this is just a lower-level course, which is designed not only for business students but also for economic students and some other major students, like computer sciences. She gives us an unacceptable project for such a statistics course
Shes got the right caring attitude and personality to teach BUEC 232 but is completely lost in lectures. Places no importance on the time slots used for lecture and spends way too much time talking about a project worth participation marks. The book teaches you a lot better and she confuses you.
I absolutely love Tara as a person. She is such a caring teacher. For 232 she spent too much time giving examples on how to apply statistics and not enough time actually teaching the material so its incredibly hard to stay focus. She made the class so easy so the average was super high which sucks w/ the curve. be prepared to teach yourself
Great prof! Wish I could take another class with her
She's a very enthusiastic teacher but it becomes difficult when she teaches her class of adults like we're in elementary school. It would help greatly if she spent the four hours a week on course material instead of as a how-to guide on using the online tool WileyPlus. Despite all of this however, she is very approachable and willing to help!
Tara is a VERY nice and caring prof. That being said, she speaks to the class like we're children. Lectures are pointless in the fact she'll spend a long time talking about very simple or even pointless things. Spend the four hours a week of lecture reading the textbook instead. Midterm was on the level of a high school test so average was high.
Tara puts students first. Extremely approachable. Office hour transcripts are posted online to help everyone. Feedback from students is used. Provides study aids for exams, since the weighting is skewed towards the midterm and final. You will have to put in time outside the lectures to do well and 232 will be hard regardless of the instructor.
This entire class was a gong show. She spent FAR too much time explaining how to use Excel/ other useless topics that were completely irrelevant to our final exam. She taught this class like an elementary school class. I felt like I had returned to Grade 1. Not to mention she didn't even teach the last chapter (it was on the final exam though).
Great professor! Examples are super memorable. Have you ever had a prof putting a bucket on her head? Or playing five finger fillet in the class? All these to help you remember important concepts. Super accessible. You can just SMS her! SMS!!!!!!!!!
Best Prof at SFU. The material is hard but she was always accessible and encouraged us to text or call her, and was even willing to meet up almost anytime. She stayed up from 10pm-2 on online office hours for 10 str8 days leading up to the final! She knows students have stressful lives and is willing to accommodate for it. Nicest Person Ever!
Tara is extremely nice but I found her class pretty disorganized. She will do everything in her power to help you succeed. She usually teaches upper level courses and I think her teaching style is much more suitable for small classes. While she helps the students that approach her, if you don't raise the same questions you'll be at a disadvantage.
Tara is an amazing person, and really cares about her students. She is always available through texts or 'online office hours,' and tried hard to help us prepare for the final exam. Nevertheless, given it was her first time teaching BUEC 232, I found it hard to understand the key points from her. Her exams are easy, and everything is from the book.
Honestly, people who have rated Tara poorly probably just got low marks and didn't make the most out of the lectures. Tara is a one-of-a -kind professor. She's readily available for help if you ever need it and she is so personable. She truly wants everyone to do well in her class. She has a great teaching style and I would recommend her to ANYONE
She doesn't really teach you much in lecture, her slides don't tell you much at all. She spends a lot of classes on things that don't really matter and then you don't understand anything at the end of it. She is ALWAYS available to help you though, so you have to self-study the content and then present it to her for her to help you.
Tara is always there to help and she's got a charming face all the time you go to her lecture or ask her about the course materials after class. I have requested help in her office hours and no matter how busy she was, she was always patient and happy to give you her solutions to every problems which you have encountered. You will be surprised.
Tara is very sincere. Her lectures are sometimes frustrating because she spends a lot of time off topic. I didn't think the final exam matched the lectures very well but this was the first time she taught the course so I am sure she will improve.
Lecture isn't necessary, but those mini lecture quizzes do add up, so don't skip too many lectures/quizzes. You can do them from home as long as you go on canvas at the time of lecture. Content gets much harder post midterm, practice final similar to final ( written questions only ). Get lube ready for last chapter, being linear regression.
Amazing professor, cares for the class makes sure everyone has all the help and resources they need. Very thorough with lectures. Explains what will be expected on tests. Overall one of the best professors I have ever had.
Tara was an amazing prof for BUS 221. She is the most caring and understanding prof. She provides a ton of resources, TA office hours and online help during midterm/finals week.
useful class, but Tara isn't clear on whats for marks and what isn't. Final was way harder than anything that was discussed in class.
Tara is a super nice professor, and the class is very useful. However, the marking scheme was somewhat unclear and the final was way tougher than any practice problems/questions/scenarios. Looking back, a hard final to study for.
Tara was a very nice professor, the class is far more approachable than most other business courses. The final is harder than expected, but if you need a grade booster or want a simpler quantitative elective, take BUS 221 with Tara
Very disorganized prof! I honestly don't know why I am paying so much to learn the things that I can simply go online and learn it myself. She was late for the second midterm and said it was a school wide printer shut down. So my question is, aren't you supposed to be prepare before then? The grading is flexible tho that's all I can say about it.
Very nice prof with good knowledge behind. I would definitely take classes with her again.
Tara is very kind, and is more than happy to answer questions during our outside of class time. she keep grading criteria clear and concise. She takes material that some may find difficult, and she goes through it at such a pace that anyone can keep up.
Tara is such a great prof who makes classes fun and interesting. I was never bored in her class. She does a lot of group in-class practice to prepare for exams and even had us writing practice questions on the windows and white boards! She is very kind and cares for her students. BUS221 with Tara was my favourite class at SFU! so practical!
The worst prof EVER! Doesn't communicate, no expectations, doesn't follow her own rubric, and so on. She literally is the laziest person I have ever met and doesn't care AT ALL about her students. We wait MONTHS for a response through email and the TAs have no clue what is going on either.
BRUH, she's legit the worst prof at SFU. So lazy, disgusting how she doesn't care about students. Such an airhead too, I can't believe SFU hired her as a prof.
Not ever professors great, but it's not hard to be a decent human being. She needs to start taking credit for her faults, seems like she's always blaming others for her mistakes. She is a terrible prof, doesn't seem qualified to teach at all. She's also super aggressive. SFU seriously needs to step in and fix the issue for BUS 221. Tara is terrible
Little to no communication, took over a month to get in touch, the grading criteria was unclear. When students are unable to get into the zoom, she ignored it and said, "its working for the rest of us", then kept going. Said she would record the optional lectures, but didn't because she didn't have hard drive space, so we were left in the dark.
I really enjoyed this class. You learn many useful things, and Tara seems kind and sweet. The quizzes and assignments were really easy, and there was no midterm/final this term. Tara had some technical issues, and I think it would've been better taking this course in-person. The workload is very light, and the math involved is super simple.
Professor Immell has failed to successfully transition a coherent Personal Finance course curriculum to the remote learning environment. The class was disorganized, her responses to emails were scarce, and her Office hours could barely be considered constructive. The class is all over the place, so much lack of structure. I would not recommend her.
No 3-hour lecture only 1-hour Q&A online. So lazy that didn't give us her email and TA's. She didn't follow the deadline of the syllabus, one of the quizzes posted online after the deadline of it. She won't receive students' suggestions and forced to close zoom to avoid listening to anyone who said any suggestion. No organization. Didn't teach any.
Avoid take her. Waste money and time. I felt sorry for the money that was given by taking her class and learned nothing. She sells videoes rather than taking the remoting classes by herself. Don't waste your money on this course. It's not worthy it.
I Understand that Online teaching is hard, but this was the worst educational experience I've ever had, the worst professor ever, she would delete messages from discussion boards, avoid questions, lie about emails. Take this in perspective, we are a week into the fall semester and she still hasn't given us our grades for the summer semester.A KAREN
Very dissatisfied with Tara's approach to online learning. I heard rave reviews about this class due to the practicality of the content. Tara's approach this summer was far from great. She failed in communication in which took over a month for response through email and was very unclear. Her grading scheme was nonexistent and marked inconsistent.
What a waste of money and time. Tara during the summer semester was not very clear with her expectations and her communication was lacking. She would take FOREVER to respond to emails and believed in no communication is better for students. She claims that a workshop she attended for online learning believed in little communication with students.
I was so excited for this personal finance class. I think Tara is sweet and really tries to understand and accommodate. Online transition was difficult but only can be used as an excuse for so long. I loved Enriched Academy and learned lots. Assignments and one hour Q&A's were UNRELATED to the video. I was very disappointed. Unorganized.
Just avoid her if you have any chance. As a TA, she is irresponsible as well and always be late on posting marks.
Tara was a mess this semester. Instructions for assignments were unclear, she didn't respond to any emails, and lectures were completely pointless and disorganized. As of five weeks after the final project was due, we still don't have marks for over half of the work we did in the semester. This is despite having THREE TAs for a 40-student class.
Tara has been making changes to the class since the beginning of the semester to accommodate everyone. Her class depends a lot on people having the motivation to be part of the activities. I like the content and I feel like this will be helpful to me in the future. She really cares about helping students learn about financial freedom. Easy class :)
Tara's classes are spent almost entirely discussing due dates because she changes them constantly and majority of the class ends up confused. The syllabus is useless and her assignment outlines are very poorly described. The work in this class is very easy but the organization or lack thereof is headache inducing. Won't take a class with her again.
Her teaching style made a really promising class with many life skills borderline useless. Rather than giving informative lectures, much class time is wasted examining canvas or answering assignment questions on what realistically should have been taught. She's nice as a person, but for the first time in 3 years at SFU, I learned nothing in a class
Tara doesn't teach, if BUS 221 wasn't practically just Planning 10 from high school, everyone would've failed. Thank god this class was made of material that a 5th grader can solve.
I am a Deans List student, and this is the worst course I have ever taken in my academic career. Tara is disorganized and did not release the course syllabus for weeks, and would randomly create assignments outside of class time and expect students to finish it within hours. I am begging anyone who is reading this to not take this course.
Not teaching in the class and report academic integrity issues unnecessary for students. Do not recommended.
Tara is very nice, but she does not teach. She will say the same things over for the couple-hour lectures. Always makes projects/assignments due on weekends, but gives very little notice/explanation during class before submission due date. You think you'd learn some good skills, but you do not, don't recommend this course with her.
Tara is a nice prof, but her teaching is awful. She is overly enthusiastic in lectures, and rambles too much instead of actually teaching the concepts. Assignment descriptions and rubrics were vague. She expects students to have income and know financing beforehand. This class is a self effort and to students who are new to this, do not take!
Not accessible outside class and takes weeks to months to reply to your email and release grades. She literally goes to lecture to ramble on about the simplest things and then we get tested for something very complex. She warns us in the beginning that the slides aren't hers... yeah... we know, it's obvious. Bi-weekly tests.
Bi-weekly tests (focuses on 2 chapters, non-cumulative) instead of a midterm and final, which is good. HOWEVER, she (and the TA's) never respond to emails on time. Her lectures cover the simplest lessons, and then she tests us on material 5x the difficulty. Doesn't post assignments or practice problems until one day before they're due.
This prof is so unclear with her instructions, I wonder how much time she actually invests in organizing this class. There is always something wrong with tests (e.g. missing questions). She ghosts you when you email her about anything. How is she getting a PhD in education. She is horrible at teaching you the right things. Test and assignment heavy
Get ready to read. She doesnt teach anything!!! Exams are riddled with issues...
Tara is a nice lady but cant teach. She covers basics in class and tests you on things not even in the textbook. Tests are barely functional on Canvas. I forgot to round a few answers, she said not her problem. Bi weekly tests non cumulative some ppl like it, but offers no reason to learn from mistakes & no room for redemption
Not a well organized Prof. Only best thing is no midterm and final. But otherwise, take a better prof if want to learn something out of this course.
Great course structure (bi-weekly tests worth 12.5%). However, tests are full of issues. There's at least 1 "technical" issue in each test. She normally blames IT for these issues... but it's actually her own laziness. If you enjoy getting robbed grade points because of typos the prof makes, then you should pick her!
Tara is nice and her bi-weekly tests are fair. However, the lecture is useless as she teaches basics and tests from the textbook. The bi-weekly tests were only easy if you read the textbook and did the textbook questions for practice. She never replies to emails and there is always a grading issue on every test. She is super unorganized.
Tara is a very nice woman, but her lectures are not it. She would talk about the same things for 3 hours and then quiz us on things she didn't teach. Very vague and unclear instructions for each assignment. The TA was not good as well, did not have an approachable attitude and was an extremely hard marker when she actually marked assignments.
Taras course structure was good with bi-weekly quizzes worth 12.5% each. However she is EXTREMELY unorganized. Every quiz had some issues and many questions were marked wrong. You will have to spend hours in office hours trying to correct her and get the mark you deserve. I never thought it was possible for a prof to be so unorganized.
Other reviews basically sum it up. Tara's a sweet person but her organization is awful. She goes on tangents in lecture on what could've been a great learning experience on useful things. Also not a fan of how assignment deadlines are due days after or the day of her giving instructions. At least the assignments weren't difficult.
She is very nice and enthusiastic about what she is teaching but is also very unorganized and all over the place. We didn't have our course schedule finished until a couple of weeks into the semester. She would go on long tangents in class about her personal life, and the assignments/tests expected a level of knowledge we did not receive in class.
Tara is a nice lady. But she is the most unorganized prof I had ever seen. She ghosted your email and if you asked her questions she would let you to ask TAs. But many times even TAs were not sure. She taught super simply for lectures but bi-weekly tests were way more complex. Just DON'T choose her.
The course is structured around the assignments and peer-review. Tara gives out an assignment and a draft needs to be completed and uploaded by end of week at which point other students critique your work. Then the final copy is due before midnight after the following class. She barely does any teaching herself and instructions are often unhelpful.
She does biweekly quizzes which are fair if you studied except for a few chapters (it was so whack). She is disorganized, but it is understandable because she marks each quiz herself and remarks it if you have any concerns. It was an easy A because it was done online and it gives you more time to study since you don't have to attend class.
An excellent professor, dedicated to teach her subject, gives many options of material in addition of what she teaches.
She gives you many opportunities to pass and achieve your grade. There are quizzes every week.
Took her strategic planning class and literally one of the most horrible professors ever. She doesn't even teach, put the PowerPoint slides she got from another professor on the projector and reads it all loud. Please don't ever choose her class unless you wanna waste your time and money.
Tara is the best derivative professor at SFU, if I have a chance, I will take this professor's course again.
Tara is overly enthusiastic it's a bit worrisome. Her BUS 316 exams are a complete disaster and give little to no time for us to finish them. The majority of the class didn't have sufficient time and she completely brushed it off. This professor should not be teaching by any means. Avoid at all costs.
I have no idea how she's still eligible to teach. Hasn't gotten one single grade back to students, so we have no idea how we are even doing in the course and it's almost ending. She doesn't get back to students on time, and we have to learn the material ourselves. Avoid at all costs. I mean it.
Tara is a kind person, and will definitely help you if you are able to reach out to her, however her class structure, organization, tests, and content are a disaster to try to understand/prepare for in order to grade your knowledge. You will be told to learn xyz chapters and be faced with problems outside of what you studied on tests. Avoid!
Avoid this professor at all costs. I've personally NEVER met such an incompetent, lazy, and full of excuses type of person who doesn't seem passionate about what she teaches. Makes excuses for not appearing in class and doesn't respond to emails or questions.
Awful professor and awful course format. All lectures had mistakes and there was errors in the questions on the exams. Despite being in person class, prof decided to conduct exams on canvas which was a mess. Created so many issues academic integrity problems etc. Shocked that she was able to teach this class, disappointing from the school...
Tara is a very sweet professor, and helps you if you ask for help. She does her best to make the class engaging and teaches you the necessary stuff. If you listen to the lectures and participate, you'll do good in her class.
I have never seen a more disorganized prof in my entire time with SFU. I had to swap out of her class in the first week, there is no way I'm paying that kind of money for her to show up late to class and not teach any meaningful course content. Do you seriously expect us to teach ourselves and then not answer our questions? Absolutely unacceptable.
Overall professor is good but very disorganised
She is a horrible professor. She wrote in her syllabus to not email her and ask questions during lecture time, she does not even provide her email. The TA is unresponsive and nothing has been graded in weeks. First lecture, she did not even know whether she uploaded her syllabus yet and her powerpoint did not work. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
She doesn't show up to class, teaches something else and tests something else, most of the course we self study from the textbook. We didn't know our assignment marks till final exam due to professor being lazy. Students cheat as she was disorganized and lazy that she couldn't even do anything about it. And she is not passionate about her work.
Cool Professor, so kind with grades.
No clear instructions were given to students.
Prof is nice and tries to be helpful. However, her exams are very difficult and no amount of studying is enough. There are no partial marks given for work, and no assignments. Exam worth 25% in the third week of class on 5 chapters, making it very difficult to study with such less time.
Make your lecture content consistent with the textbooks and consistent with the tests! And she should consider partial marks.
She is a really easy professor; She will offer a second chance to improve grades.
Prof put in no effort to actually teach the class and even studying the textbook questions and her practice exams aren't much help. Exams are way harder than they need to be and no partial marks are given so failing an exam is common. Tests you on chapters that are not assigned for the exams. Overall just an awful experience.
Extremely disorganized. No clear instructions. TAs do not know how to make a proper presentation and they are supposed to teach you how to make one! lol. very unreliable in giving advice. I would not recommend anyone to take any course with this instructor. you are gonna have anxiety, and a lot of hard times.
BUS 221 is a fluf elective, very low stakes, so this review is possibly biased. Tara was extremely engaging, had a lot of experience on trading floors to draw from. Very kind and understanding, will connect with you on a human level and provide accomodations if you are struggling with things outside of class. 100% planning to take her other classes
Will change assignment criteria last minute. Would rather go on tangents about unrelated topics rather than go over the assignments. Will not answer questions or emails. In class participation assignments, but with only 2 min to submit. She gave us 30 min on the first day but shortened it due to "not everyone submitting on time"???? Avoid.
Prof will give a week long assignment, only post the grading criteria the day its due, and remove marks for not following the guidelines. This course will drop your GPA if taken with her. AVOID
Lectures are loaded with personal stories that do not help with assignments. Does not respond to emails or messages. Does not provide a grading rubric for any assignment until AFTER a draft is due. We are finishing working on the final paper and JUST NOW learned how to look for reliable sources, but still no mention of how to write an intro/thesis.
Joke of a prof. Can't show marking scheme until two days before an essay a do and screws me by rewriting my essay. Also the frequency of her showing up to my class is how my father go gets milk. Can't take a skill issue that this class sucks and forces 10% participation mark and counts who is present to class.
Always changes the criteria the day before an assignment is due. Doesn't show up to class, doesn't communicate, and only tells her TA what to say at the last minute to throw them under the bus when students are rightfully upset. Expects students to rewrite their entire paper when the criteria is changed the day before it is due.
I'm a third year computer science student at took this course seems like the professor forgot this is a 100 level writing course not 400. She doesn't even show up to class 80% of the times and still manage to get paid! The course material is so unorganized, and she doesn't know what she's doing. I feel so bad for the money I spent to be in her clas
There was hardly anything taught in the class. Disengaging lectures and most of what is told in lectures is just common sense. The assignments are too time consuming and tiresome. I also find it weird that you get marks for just showing up to the class when you hardly learn anything. The lectures might cure your insomnia though.
She didn't show up to class for more than a month. She didn't tell anyone where she was or reply to emails. I was worried she had an emergency and hoped she was okay. Guess where she was when she came back? ON VACATION IN CHICAGO. She said her flight back was cancelled but that doesn't excuse a whole month off in the middle of the term. Why?
subpar
She cut our final exam time in half. Lied about the exam content. Said she would tell us if we could use our laptops during the exam, and never followed up on it, then got mad at those who didn't bring one. Disrespectful to students as well.
Honestly, I literally could not name you even a single thing that I learned this semester. A complete waste of money, absolutely ridiculous that this is a required course for CS. Terrible professor.
She thinks this writing stuff is important to us but it is not. Tara somehow managed to make an EASY course hard. Condescending is not cut out be an organized, responsible professional.
- One of the worst so far, frustrating. - The grading criteria do not make sense, there is no clear path to success in this course. - She was not there for half of the classes and I learned nothing. - Waste of money, time, energy. Just avoid her, this is an easy course, take it with anyone other than her.
Canvas course is a mess Assignment descriptions are long, poorly written and formatted. Reused from past terms with no effort to proof read. Marking is vague +subjective Class is scheduled for 3 hours but only teaches for 2 TA has no respect for class or Tara Lectures are read off powerpoint Has a habit of repeating "_is gonna go ahead and _"
Content, difficulty and marking might be alright but I'd just drop the course for the annoying voice. Very disorganized though.
cant stand her voice, no one can. Most unorganized prof ive had, did not show up an entire class and everyone left, no excuse or reasoning given. We had to watch a recording on our own time to make up for that. She also doesn't even teach, the textbook does. She gets. her TAs to do practice problems and teach us instead. Easy course, not with her.
She speaks in riddles. I get no clear answers to any of my questions. She delegates all her work to TAs, and provides zero partial marks for test answers, suggesting a reluctance to invest time in marking or fulfilling her teaching duties. Very unhelpful outside of class and she's not a great lecturer.
She was an hour late to class during the third week of school, no apologies nor explanation. Due to the strike with TSSU, no class was held. Unlike other professors who try to offer help to students, she only uploaded three five-minute videos onto canvas to replace a three-hour lecture. No information on classes and no replies on emails as well.
Worst professor I had at SFU. Sounds aggressive when she speaks and does not provide clear communication about whether tests will happen or not. Doesn't teach and reads off lecture slides. Gets her TAs to teach and go over questions. Never showed up to class one day and never addressed why or apologized for wasting her student's time.
Sorry for my poor English, but I took a writing course with Tara Immell. She makes attendance mandatory with in-class discussion questions worth marks. It's a writing course, but she doesn't care for that and only wants to go on random tangents about insignificant topics. None of the lectures are worth going to. I never enjoyed any of the lectures.
Utterly useless. Does not respond to the discussion page she FORCED us to start using at the beginning of the semester. Her curriculum consists of talking about APA7 in every lecture, and has very unclear instructions in general. Not very lenient either.
Lectures are useless but mandatory because of random participation marks. Gave us instructions for a PowerPoint one day before it was due. Haven't learned much. Doesn't respond to emails or discussion boards.
Tara Immell does not teach at all, she extends what should be a 20 minute lecture in a 2 hour lecture. She places all the work onto the TA's, if you email to ask her a question she will redirect you to coursys, where she won't respond. We had a presentation draft due on a Friday and she didn't answer questions about it until Thursday(the day before
Horrible class, disorganized and no direction or guidelines for any projects, doesn't reply to email and gives no helpful responses to students, it's almost like she doesn't want anyone to learn anything valuable and wants to be insufferable. I would have taken this with any other professor if I had the chance.
Terrible. Doesn't explain anything, it's awful AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I thought people were exaggerating until I took a course with her. She doesn't reply to emails and basically gets her TA's to do everything. Be prepared to self teach yourself throughout the semester. For tests, she does not give you partial marks, only gives marks if you get the final answer right. Avoid her at all costs.
This is a very unprofessional professor. I am approaching the end of my degree and I've never experienced a prof like her. She says one thing and does another, has THE WORST communication skills, and makes students uncomfortable by lashing out inappropriately. For the sake of your sanity, mental health, and GPA, do not take this class with her.
Although 105w is a boring course, Tara makes it so much worse. Lectures are on elementary school grammar where participation is necessary. She does not respond to student's questions at all, she changed the criteria on the last day for a video of ourselves presenting, making everyone who finished restart, terrible professor, avoid if possible.
In 2 and a half months so far I have learned a grand total of 0 things. People are playing video games on their laptops instead of paying attention and 90% of the class only attends for participation marks. Please never take this class with Tara Immell. She changes assignments last min, is condescending, requires attendance and haunts my dreams.
If you want to see a professor throw a temper tantrum during an exam, this class is for you.
I never disliked a professor as much as Tara, except one (Susan Bubra). Tara does not teach, nor show up to class. Instead, the TAs will solve problems for you which you had to learn to solve on your own anyways in the graded homework the previous week. Tara's voice sounds is unbearable, you will notice every student is saying the same thing.
it's a first year science writing for class. The teacher and the teaching method is clumsy. No organization, the teacher want to do so many different things and she cannot handle those things herself. I rarely review prof but this one. Avoid at all cost.
This class is mandatory for computing science students, and if the only option available is Tara, it is manageable. But this class has been a mess since the start. Assignments are posted in random places, criteria and feedback is very vague, and marking is unfair. Also, the professor is incredibly disorganized, assignments are changed the day befor
CMPT105W makes me sad. I don't know what to do in life because of Tara Immell.
She never responds to emails, and most of the lectures are led by the TA. If you're into the whole "teach yourself the course" vibe, then maybe it's your thing. With the SFU strike going on, she decided to play around with the test schedule, first delaying them and then suddenly throwing weekly tests at us. It's like a rollercoaster of chaos.
Just a heads-up in case you're considering her class. Find another class where the professor shows up, teaches, and emails back, and you don't need a crystal ball to predict the test schedule.
Somehow made a 100 level course so tedious, time consuming, and uninteresting. Extremely late grading, up to 2 months after the assignment is due, worst rubrics I've personally seen, 0 communication with her TAs, and unreachable out of class. Assignments build up from previous ones, so no feedback and/or grading makes students feel very lost.
I never knew a class could get as boring as this one gets. The assignments are relentless, with grading so harsh that even children would choose to work in a factory in China than take this course. On top of that, the feedback was non-existent and wrong. Only take this course if it is required. It is not worth it.
Changes criteria the day before the assignment is due. Late to class on the first day. Does not show up to own office hours. Blames the TAs for everything. Marks are not on the rubric that was given. Does not respond to the discussion board or responds three weeks late after an assignment was due. Nothing is done smoothly.
Tara is such a terrible professor it's crazy. No rubrics for anything and no feedbacks for anything either. Does not communicate with anyone not even the TAs and is impossible to reach out to outside of class. She has the most annoying voice ever and never stops talking. She will make this class and your life so much harder than it has to be.
Okay, professor, doesn't teach much during class and assignments are a bit vague but in terms of difficulty not bad. An example of this is requiring IEEE in 1 of her essays despite not teaching it. Expect to do most work in your own time in this class, not much assistance.
IEEE format is on the final but we were never taught it in class? This is supposed to be an English class, taking 3 hours per week... and didn't find time to teach us ONE OF THE TWO CITATION FORMATS WE NEED FOR THE FINAL?
Tara is a bad communicator, very unorganized (her canvas page is the biggest mess), not accessible (will not answer your questions), does not show up to class (literally), has a very loud voice (some cannot stand it), marks the exams by the final answer (make a decimal mistake and youre screwed), gets her TAs to do everything, not good at teaching.
Late to classes or doesn't even show up. Relies on TA's to teach for her because she does not do anything. My friends and I each have sent over half a dozen emails to Tara each, and no one has ever gotten a response back from her. Nothing is done smoothly. Never have been with a prof so disorganized, it is concerning she teaches.
Where do I even start? She teaches elementary-level grammar to university students, takes attendance, and doesn't give criteria for assignments. It's the end of the semester, and we've gotten two assignments back. She goes over the least applicable information to the course and leaves all the students wondering what she wants. Terrible professor.
Tara is extremely disorganized, gives unclear feedback and confusing criteria, changes the assignment requirements right before the due dates, and overall makes this class much more frustrating than it has to be. Assignments are fairly easy but very harshly graded. You will lose tons of marks for the smallest details if you aren't careful.
The biggest waste of time in my life. Her lectures are completely incoherent (talks about things that are completely unrelated to class and wastes hours). Her voice is unbearable and condescending. Things that have been handed in for months sit unmarked. Be prepared to do every assignment in the blind and with 0 support from her.
Unfortunately, due to the TSSA strikes, the course is very poorly managed as a whole. Tara is not able to keep the course functioning while TSSA goes on. Many different online systems are required to be used, and none of them function well. Marking is extremally slow, and assignment guidelines aren't clear until less than 24 hours before deadline.
I would strongly advise to not take this professor, I am currently on the day of the final and only know 25% of my marks at this moment. She is unhelpful when asked, nothing is marked, and none of the assignments are properly explained and given a rubric.
The most boring lectures I have had to sit through. Unfortunately, attendance was mandatory because of small assignments done during lectures. When I asked questions about the material she was supposed to be teaching, she often told me to Google it. Grading took incredibly long, and I am still without a grade on some of my assignments.
The only redeeming factor for this class is that the course seems to be curved. Lectures have participation marks and were so heavily disorganized that she forgot to give breaks and needed constant tech support. TAs couldn't mark properly, were generally rude, and took months to grade assignments. We all cheered/clapped for her in the last class.
Lectures were stretched out and disengaging. The material taught was common knowledge and basic english. The only thing I learned in this class was how to write in IEEE format, which we learn ourselves. Get ready for vague feedback that takes months to get and limited, delayed communication with the TAs and Tara through coursys only (no emails).
The course was honestly straightforward. Her lectures weren't beneficial. I just went to every lecture because of the class attendance. It is a straightforward course overall; use myBib for the references and Grammarly for proofreading and ask the chatgpt for guidance. You should easily get a B+ if your English isn't too weak.
Tara was disorganized and made the class much harder than it had to be. Here's my advice: - go to the lectures, the participation marks are really helpful in the end - the final is very easy, but take your time - make friends in the class - Tara is a very sweet person and easy to talk to. If you put in the effort, it's an easy class.
Tara is an amazing teacher especially when it comes to teaching the important ideas of writing a good research paper. It's required to come to every lecture because she gives discussions every class and it counts as participation marks. If you have any concerns its good to ask her because she is very helpful and caring. Overall, its awesome course.
Lectures are required since there are in-class participation marks, but none of the material is relevant to the papers she assigns. The final was split into sections and horribly organized, as TA's were handing out papers during the exam times. All the feedback marks are copy and paste, and very unclear as to why marks were docked.
I genuinely wish she would use her time to actually prepare to give informative lectures instead of spending so much energy and time preventing students from posting discussions from outside the course. If she actually gave useful lectures (or at least tried..), students would love to attend lectures even without the participation marks.
Tara is extremely unorganized. We did not get a syllabus until the second week. She has tons of TAs that are just incompetent. TAs recorded solution videos that she posted on Canvas, but not only they're hard to understand, but their solutions are wrong. How can you be a TA when you can't solve problems yourself? This is just outrageous.
She somehow made an easy class hard. The rubric of the essays was never an accurate depiction of how well your essay would be. She was extremely condescending to talk to and talked with a fake nice tone in lectures. In the final the instructions were unclear and all she said to clear it up was to do what you think is best. Take someone else.
This class is a joke
Easily the most boring, uninformative class I ever attended in 3 years at SFU mostly due to the teacher Tara Immell. She is highly not recommended. Also included a $203.79 course fee??? my O chem lab fee was 9 dollars for comparison.
Cartoon Network type class.
She yells into the mic and doesn't teach anything
worst prof OF ALL TIME. i don't say that lightly. she has been kind to me in general but she would be better off working in a profession that doesn't involve time management or organization. i saw her a handful of times because she was straight up never in class, got TAs to teach the whole thing. exams were not relevant to course material.
Four tests and only highest three will count. Love this. Many office hours during the week to help us. Sometimes the tests have vague expressions, hope can be clearer for further students! Tara is very nice and caring for students. The only thing is she is not very responsible for Emails, so better to go office hours!
Tara Immell is not a good professor to take classes with. Some Cons: -Messy and Unorganized -Often late to class, 40 min late first day -Unclear assignment criteria -insanely slow marking -mandatory in class discussion that she tried so hard to enforce(ie. seat number) Pros: -easiest final of my life -can do other class work in Tara's class
This was the worst class I have taken in my life. If this course was not a requirement of my degree, would have never taken this. The marking criteria was not clear for the assignments and she is a really tough grader. I wasn't sure till the day of final exam what the syllabus was.
Avoid this terrible prof if you can.
Although I got an A+ in this course, Tara is one of the worst profs I've encountered at SFU. She is unorganized, rude, and unhelpful. I'm 90% sure that most people who sent her emails throughout the semester received replies roughly a month after the email was sent whilst some received nothing. Avoid this class (and this prof) unless required.
This course taught by Tara was beyond useless. If you already know how to write you'll do well. If you don't know how to write you'll struggle or fail.
shows up to class late, talks about her personal life way too much adds an extra hour to each lecture, lectures so simplistic and don't really help at all, no syllabus going into the third week of class..... just do your job pretty simple
Fully expect to teach yourself from the textbook. Terrible professor
She clearly doesn't care about her students or the quality of teaching. She lets TAs teach the classes and has come to lectures late countless times (sometimes an hour late). She was even late for the final exam. Extremely irresponsible and unprofessional. The course material is like that for elementary school students.
The course content itself isn't hard but it's really easy to fall behind and do bad on the topic tests. I personally liked the course content but everything is self-teaching. Lectures you basically go to meet friends but learn nothing. Averages are also pretty higher than prev semesters, so before
Absolutely terrible professor, most disrespect tone and is never open to constructive criticism. Does not care about students grades, will deduct marks off the most bizarre errors, and in office hours will belittle your opinion. Worst part is it takes her 5 minutes to state something as she talks in 0.25 speed. AVOID AT ALL COST
She doesn't deserve to be a professor at SFU; she should've been a high school teacher. She prepared nothing for this course; John did. Nobody cared for the formatting, and the grading scheme was too focused on formatting, not the content. If you are a CS and have to take this course, don't take it with her unless you have to graduate.
She's probably the most grating person to listen to that I've ever encountered. Her comprehension skills are awful, so she often misinterprets what students are asking and thus gives incredibly condescending responses.
Something about how she talks
Tara's class is a mixed bag - disorganized at times, but the content is straightforward. unstuck study was a lifesaver for preparing for the easy final.
I did not learn anything in this course. She didnt hand back any assignments which meant we didnt know our grade at all. there was no way for us to reflect on feedback and improve for future assignments and it felt like i was just going through the course blindly. only nice thing about the class was she gave us a lot of time to work on assignments
She did not mark any assignments. Just got back our first assignment a couple days ago and she marks real strict. There is no exact organization in her class structure and assignments, kind of hard to know what she wants in order to do well. Without feedback, we do not know where we are at. Took as an gpa booster, but Tara is smt else.
Managed to make EDUC100W hard for absolutely no reason. Literally every other class had a better average than us and she marked assignments towards the end so we can't even work on whatever we did wrong over the semester. She and her TA were incompetent.
W. T. F. how is it possible to turn the easiest course in sfu into the most IMPOSSIBLE thing on earth. the marks are unfair and absurdly hard. the prof gives feedback on an assignment that was handed in 3 MONTHS AGO like bro how am i supposed to learn from my mistakes when the course is already over. smh if u have this prof just drop it.
This prof somehow made an easy class that I took as a GPA booster, hard, she is way too caught up in APA formatting to actually assess the quality of the work, the TA is also an extremely hard marker and they take marks away for petty things. They started giving assignment feedback back once the semester was almost over, just horrible.
Somehow turned one of the easiest class to one of the hardest writing class I've ever taken. Won't not recommend this prof to anyone. TA took 3 months to hand everything back. Absolutely unacceptable.
Hilariously terrible at teaching
I wish there was tags to describe how bad this class was. First off, it took the TA and prof took 3 MONTHS to get a single assignment back! It was only a 500 word reflective essay btw. There are still multiple assignments from Jan that havent been marked. Second, they were so picky about marking. If you're still reading this: AVOID THIS PROF!
I would avoid taking EDUC 100 with this professor, as I was midway through the course before I got feedback on many of my items. This meant I could not improve my marks on my discussions or reflective assignments. Very nitpicky on format without considering the substance of what is written. Very terse when emailed about my concerns. Avoid.
Absolutely terrible. GPA booster class became a GPA reducer for me and everyone that took this class with this awful professor.
Took 3 months to get everything back. TA graded like it was a 400 level class and was very rude when asking about feedback. Prof also was useless as she had no idea what was happening. Both were VERY picky about APA style. GPA booster class into the hardest writing class I've taken. AVOID AYSUH AND TARA
Absolutely horrible and worst TA ever. Doesn't know what she is doing and just takes marks away from you.
I don't even know how she's qualified for her job. She often lets TAs handle the class, shows up late (sometimes doesn't show up at all), but still forces students to attend while putting in absolutely zero effort herself. Her only focus and passion seem to be making students' lives as miserable as possible.
she assigned reading responses and group discussions due biweekly (rotating). same assignments, tailored to new readings. It took months to get any grades back. things submitted in January were graded in March. If you made a mistake on your first paper, you wouldn't know and would make that mistake on each paper. you never knew how you were doing.
