The only thing I didn'tlike about this class was multiple choice tests.I prefer essay but since most people don't I'm probably the only one who didn't like it.She expects attendance & requires footnotes for papers which is hard &time consuming but for anyone going on in school it's good preparation.
I couldn't stand how she sets up classes with her notes and outlines. Most people don't do well on here tests because you won't really know what to study... also it was a very boring class
Overall bad teacher, very boring all it is, is nonstop notes, you dont know what to study for because of the volume of information that is given to you. And her tests are to specific for the amount of information that is given. She said that the average test score was mid 70's and there isn't any homework. So if you want an A dont take this class.
She is not a good teacher
She is a worthless teacher. We take non-stop notes everyday for an hour and 15 minutes. He need a hearing aid. Her test have nothing to do with the notes we do everyday in class and she often picks topics that she likes to put on the tests more, rather then what we have been going over. Ross = worthless
Do not take this class! She presents the material in a good way where it is interesting but the volume of what you must know is ridiculous. For ONE test you must know about 20-40 pages of notes by heart and EVERY detail written in the 6 or 7 chapters that comprise of about 20 pages each.I ended up putting most of my time into this class-an elective!!

She is a very nice lady, but her class is extremely hard. Her tests are soo horrible. They cover too much information and are to detailed for the amount of information we are supposed to learn
I don't know how such a repuslive teacher of History got to be head of the History department at OCC. Professor Ross is a problem to History Majors. She's great to deal with, but her ability to give failing grades to a name without a face, is just another easy way for her to simply collect a paycheck.WARNING:DROP THIS CLASS BEFORE CONTINUING W/HER.
I've taken two tests so far, and failed both. All Miss Ross' advice has entailed is that I read the text clearly. I cannot believe this. I have complained to my limit, but now I'm uncertain about that. I'm going to Debbie Sydow herself and demanding refund for this f*@king class. Do not take a History class with this 'thing.' Unless you want a C.
Pay attention, you your work, you'll be fine!
wow she is the 2nd worst teacher i evr had the funny part is my worst teacher also was a history teacher go figure she is very unclear gives what to much info, can be very digrading igf not just a down right **** i got a c in her class only cuz i think she knows she suxs at reaching andf grade on a curve so in clseing.. STAY AWAY STAY FAR AWAY!!!
way to much info for one person to learn in 2 weeks for one exam. 40 text book pages 25 personal notes pages (half filled with **** like what the native americans eat, as in each freaking tribe!) and 3 movies.
OMG she is everything you guys said, her class is hard and she is a joke her self. She is proud of the fact that the class average on one her tst was a 62...i am going to get a b in the class but that is because i like history. I would not take her class if you do not like history, you will not do well. Oh yea and she is not funny!!!
Worst teacher ive ever had.we take pages and pages of notes and none of its on the tests.you have to write the book to get her test questions right. thinks shes funny and looks at you when your answering a question like your an idiot. every test has a semester worth of info in it. she really thinks shes doing good and its our fault. dumb
She is a IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER i rather listen to hellen keller talk
If you're not into reading or studying or history in general, not the prof. to take with. she's got a PHD and is hard to get things passed. attendance is mandatory, and tests are multiple choice, true/false, with no short answers. Even so, the questions are hard. i suggest not to take history with her.
She is a horrible professor. Her lectures are actually interesting and full of information, the problem is that her tests do not match anything from the textbook or her lectures. I would study for hours and fail her tests. She is also very unfriendly.
You guys are all complaining about her being hard, using the textbook, and giving a lot of notes. Hello, this is college here folks, its not supposed to be easy or everyone could do it. I've taken two classes with Prof. Ross and she has been a great teacher. Shes hard because she wants you to be ready for a real college not the 13th grade like OCC.

Prof. Ross is one of the best on campus. Her exams are a little bit of a struggle but if you read the texts there should be no problem. I took 2 classes with her and if I had to I would do it all again
don't...just don't
Very hard grader. Boring
Very boring. Typical history teacher. Sits in front of class and reads off her notes. You take 7 pages of notes each class, and none of them are on your exams. Don't take it.
Professor Ross warns you on the first day of class that she teaches a college sophomore class at a sophomore level. Her tests require careful reading and that you read your book AND take notes. Her lectures are the BEST! It's like she's telling you a story, they're awesome
Worst teacher i have had so far at OCC! She gives you at least 5 pages of notes every class and reads them so fast that you can hardly write them down then they are not even on the test! Do not take her class!
Not only the worst at OCC, but perhaps the worst in the State of NY. I'm nearly a straight A student and I received solid D after working harder in her class than any other at Onondaga. If you enjoy educational abuse, then go for it. Otherwise, avoid Ross like the Ebola plague!
good notes however they are never on the test! and she get so caught up with her storytelling that she forget shes teaching
I enjoyed history class up to this teacher.
I love history. I'm pro at it! There was a funny smell in the room sometimes especially when you are near Pro. Ross. You get very accustomed to the sights and smells in the room. I know appreciate Indian history and the smells at occ especially in Pro.Ross class! This is a must take class! It is rumored Pro.Ross gets angry If students study!
She is very educated and intelligent, but has no idea how to teach. She is very inconsistent and unclear.
Extremely hard class. Tried to do what she said to prepare for class but still felt overwhelmed. She was not very helpful and often got impatient with us when we couldn't answer her questions in class, even when we HAD done the reading. I got my worst grade ever in this class, and it doesn't transfer well. Take something else!
Very poor class, she either just doesn't know how to teach or has no passion for it anymore. I don't anyone who would didn't think that the class was done well. Takes forever to grade things, so don't expect to know how you did on anything soon.
Please don't do it to yourselves. She is a horrible professor. She just recites notes at a quick pace, making it impossible to actually follow along and take quality notes. She is extremely unhelpful.
WARNING! Prof. Ross actually expects you to think for yourself! Imagine that! Students should be glad OCC has a professor of her caliber. Her class is harder than some. She won't hold your hand (she's not your mom). Her class will help prepare you for a 4 year school. You'll get our of her class, and her, exactly what you put in to it.
She knows her stuff but is awful at teaching it. Lots of notes for no reason and she stands in the front of class and tells you what to write. Reading the book is essential. I highly recommend a different professor. She offers extra credit but it is often worth only 2-3 points and you have to travel off campus to attend it.
Please run if you can! This professor drills you about any and everything... Don't even think about asking a question in class about anything she'll embarrass you! The worst class ever unfortunately!
Shes doesn't hand you an A you need to work for it, if your lazy would not recommend. Its semi easy to cram a few hours before the test and pass with a decent grade, shes a very smart lady and knows what shes talking about.
Gets off topic really easily and will talk about things that have nothing to with anything. Would recommend it if you can keep up with what she is teaching.
It was horrible! Doesn't teach what's on tests. Yells at students for sharpening your pencil or eating. Very hard to learn anything in that class
I checked her rating on this website, Rate My Professor, and everyone rated her as worst professor ever, but also I had to take History Class and took with her. Please GUYS DON'T JUST DON'T TAKE CLASS WITH HER. SHE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR AT OCC. You won't pass her class even if you work hard because her Test questions are REALLY REALLY HARD. Don't
Yes her tests are extremely tough but if you keep up with the reading she assigns its all in the book. Her classes were amazing, she clearly loves history and loves her job so that helped a lot. Plus if you struggle with history she offers so much extra credit its hard to fail
She covers most of the textbook in class. VERY old fashioned. Certainly passionate about her job. If you have a question merely raise your hand and she will answer. Her tests are hard unless you study on regular basis and/or keep up with the readings which are listed on the syllabus. Don't do it if you're a freshman unless you're used to AP's.
It's been 3 years since I've graduated from OCC but Professor Ross is by far the best History Professor I've ever had. I took her African American Studies course and She is here to help if you need it, and need help remembering specific dates and certain events. The tests are pretty good (READ READ READ). Great class I would take it all over again.
Excellent professor! This is not the 13th grade people. You're in college now. Her expectations are high. She expects you to think for yourself but gives you everything you need to do well. She won't put up with childish behavior or BS excuses. She's there to teach you, not parent you. If you don't do well, there's no one to blame but yourself.
Professor Ross is an amazing teacher!! You learn a lot in her class. You need to participate in class and get ready to take a lot of notes. The class was pretty interesting. Most if not all of her questions on her test are about the readings. Most of the people giving her poor ratings probably didn't take the class serious.
It was my first semester when I walked into this professors room. Her first lecture was about what the class was going to be, ect... She got on the topic of legal absences and told us she didn't care if our Bestfriend died, you couldn't miss her class. And she was not joking. Only intermediate family. She's a cold person, don't take her!!!!!!
Long lectures with a lot of notes. You NEED the book to pass!
Excellent professor, she covers everything you need to know for homework assignments and exams in detail during her lectures. This worked well for me and allowed me to make side notes on important facts she discussed. It is important to read the course maternal because it will help you to be prepared to take notes during her lectures.
she is to harsh on things her altitude is above and beyond
Worst professor I have ever had. Do not take this class with her. She is very rude and doesn't care about her students. She basically sets you up to fail.
hardest class I've ever taken. She makes it almost impossible to pass this class. Includes information in lectures that aren't needed for tests. Very very specific of what answers she wants when answering questions. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
She is a very rude teacher that has no leniency. I have never had a professor that wanted me to fail more than Tara Ross. All your notes come off what she says in class, and her tests are very difficult to study for. THIS IS A OCC CLASS, YET SHE TREATS IT LIKE HARVARD.
Awful. Very hard tests. Very boring lectures. All notes are what she says in class. Monotone. Less and less kids showed up each class until we had a steady 11. I do not recommend. If you are not exactly right on an answer she will let you know it.
Professor Ross is a good teacher, however, when the first thing I hear on the first day of class is, "If your family member dies you need to bring a note from the funeral home" it made me want to run out. I probably should have. Also, write anything she says on the board or on the powerpoint or you will not pass. Read the book or you will not pass
Professor Ross is a good professor. She's infamous for her strictness, and she runs a tight ship, but follow her rules (which are all reasonable) and you'll be fine. She *knows* her stuff, she's passionate about the subject, and she's very effective at teaching. Not an easy A, but definitely a good class if you actually want to learn.
BAD! Get ready to leave her class confused, and with a sore hand from writing down everything she says. She gives assigned seating and does not use BB for grades. Doesn't like to be wrong and does not allow eating/drinking/talking in class. Is not aproachable and does not cover material well. Notes if you participate in class or leave early.
Professor Ross knows her stuff; I'm not denying that. She is educated (obviously) and seems passionate about her subject. She is not a good teacher, though. She lacks in social skills that teachers (specifically college professors) should have. Her lectures (every single class is a lecture) are dry and boring. She delivers the material but poorly.
Don't take this professor. She is very strict with attendance and there is a lecture everyday. Also, you have to write down pretty much everything she says in class and she doesn't like repeating herself. Prepare to be leaving class with a really cramped hand and pages upon pages of notes to study. Any tips on the research paper?
Hated this class, hated her. Lecture the entire class, lots of notes to take. You MUST participate in class she keeps track of who asks questions, you NEED the textbook and you NEED to read it otherwise you will earn the grade you get. I failed because I stopped showing up, I got sick of her lectures, and life happened. I took HIS again with SMITH.
Never got a single grade back, Until the end of the year. All my grades were passing and she still failed me had to end up going to the dean showing them this and they ended up passing me
She never gives grades back and claims that "you'll wait until the end of the semester like all students have for decades for their grades". She knows what she is talking about, but she is lecture heavy and you NEED to take notes and read the textbook to even get close to a passing grade. If you are stuck with her, just be prepared for the work.
If possible avoid professor Ross. She doesn't give out any assignments, homework, projects, she only gives out tests. Her test are outrageous. Every single class is a lecture. If you don't take notes and read the textbook, or show up to class, you will fail her class no doubt. She is not flexible and not reasonable. Don't take any classes from her.
Doesnt care for student whatsoever.
My first semester of college in 2004 is when I had her for a MONTH. My grandmother had passed away. She said me attending her funeral was unexcused unless i brought a copy of the obituary. Because of her lack of heart, and her concern for a paycheck ONLY I dropped her class. NEVER had a professor react with a death like her. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS.
Her class was the worst one I took at OCC ever. She gave no leeway, and you had no idea what your grade was because she refused to use Blackboard. My uncle's funeral happened on a class day, and she told me to get a signed letter from the funeral home! Unbelievable! She knows what she is talking about knowledge wise, but otherwise, a rude rock.
She refuses to use blackboard so good luck finding out what your grade is. All she does is lecture. If and when theres a test, just a warning it wont be grammatically correct, and the questions are super confusing. She doesnt really teach you, its more like shes talking to you
Professor Ross was honestly not able to be with the students. She only creates exams, so that is the only likely grade that will be in your course. If we do assignments they often dont give guidance on how to do it. Overall she also isnt very good with communication and blames things on the students even if she was in then wrong.
Very boring and can be very rude
took her history class online and it was so boring and felt like a waste of my time. Long boring lectures and she does not care about discussion or what you have to say. We could not even turn our cameras on during class to feel a part of it. 4 exams and no other work so good luck
Tara Ross is very mean, she tries to embarrass you if you dont know the material but when you ask for help she doesnt help you. She rushes through the material and doesnt wait for you to take notes. If she falling behind she just wont go over the material and doesnt remind you about exams. She sets you up to fail in every way, do not take !!!!
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND! Especially if you go to the testing center, She mixed up my test. I came out of the test conference but she used a different scantron and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I did wrong but it wasnt even me. if you do get he make sure to read the textbook and take notes on it and do all the extra credit you can.
Let me first start off by saying I enjoyed my class with Prof. Ross. I looked at rate my professor before I started her class and it scared me. Now that I am done with a full semester of her 19th century American history I can honestly say she is a solid teacher. Do you need to read the text book? YES! Welcome to college lol, her class was great!
Not much HW in her class, many extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. You better study hard for her exams though. Go over the film study sheets, Textbook, and most importantly, your notes. There's a lot of information you must memorize and process for this course. I'd give professor Ross a C as my grade.
The ratings on here kind of scared me at first. But this is my experience. Mandatory attendance? Yes but there's lee way of 3 absences. Lecture heavy? Yes but she repeats things four times. One thing I didn't like is that she never posts grades ever. YOU MUST READ AND PARTICIPATE! work hard and talk to her and she'll try and help. She's not bad.
Horrible. Stay away. Grades way too hard, doesnt give assignments your grade is just the average of your 3 test grades.
She has no idea how to deal with students and doesn't care about them at all. She is just concerned with getting her job done. She only creates exams, which is your only grade. When she assigns (rarely), she doesn't give instructions on how to do them. Overall, she is a poor communicator who blames things on the students even when she is wrong.
I disliked this class and resented her. The entire class will be her lecturing, and there will be a lot of notes to take. You MUST participate in class; she keeps track of who asks questions; you MUST have the textbook and read it; otherwise, you will receive the grade that you receive. Avoid her if you can, she will make you hate everything.
If at all possible, stay away from Professor Ross. She solely gives out tests and doesn't give out any assignments, homework, or projects. Her tests are ridiculous. Every class consists of a lecture. You will undoubtedly flunk her class if you do not take notes, read the textbook, or attend class. She is not adaptable or sensible. Don't take any of
Ross was the worst prof I had at OCC. She is very inconsiderate to students & overall very harsh. She made me cry many times during the semester. She has only 3 tests worth a 100 pts & 30 for attendance & 70 for participation. She takes notes when you participate in class & will call on you randomly to summarize what u learned form the class before
She is old school and does not fit in with the other professors at OCC who want to see you succeed. I think she does everything she possibly can to make the class difficult. She shows no understanding nor wishes to help you when you express to her that you are struggling. Prepare to be tested on things you did not read nor did she lecture on.
She takes participation overly seriously. Not accessible out of class. The only thing good about her is that she provides tons of extra credit opportunities however, you will never know your average in the class or your grade on an assignment/test because she doesn't list grades on Brightspace. You won't know your average until the end of semester.
Don't take this class unless you want to write pages of unnecessary notes and receive no help when needed. Professor is not accessible outside of class and takes weeks to answer important emails. Grading is unnecessarily tough and acts like it is the most important class in the world.
Even though this Proff is quite controversial she is great in lecture. always presented the material in an interesting way and as long as you take good note which there will be alot of you will do fine in the class.
Professor Ross is worthy of so much more respect than what is written in these posts. She has a unique ability to present history in an entertaining manner that allows students to relate it to modern day events. Her lectures have depth and encourage critical thinking. Class participation prepares students to be effective citizens in society.
High expectations of students but she does not hold those same expectations of herself to her students ( at least from my perspective). Some material is handed out last minute or late.
Don't recommend her as a professor test heavy and hard to study for as it's a lot of information to study for one test treats students like high school student, very condescending
I recommend if you have difficulty with focusing on a person just talking for 80 minutes DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. Also if you have anxiety surrounding grades she is an awful professor to take, she did not once post any grades or even give you an update on your progress during the semester. She even sent an email saying not to ask about grades.
class long lectures that you have to write down everything she says, she at least will repeat stuff a few times, will not give you any respect as a person or adult, will make you get proof of death if you are absent due to that and will refuse to let you use the bathroom at all if taking a quiz/test, very textbook heavy and is required for tests.
1. Either rarely or never responds to emails, even when they are quite important. (Postponed an exam for 3 days with barely any correspondence, didn't respond to any emails about when it would be available.) 2. Majority of grade comes from a few exams and the final, so if you're a poor test taker good luck.
Her class is vary hard hard she a vary strict professor. You always going to need a note if you miss class. Like if you were in the hospital, you would need a signature for that doctor to bring to her, to prove that you were in the hospital. Same goes if there was a death in the family close relatives, you would need a not from the funeral home.
love Hist, had no problems with the material, but the teacher is awful.petty.makes yougo to Bspace until 5pm to check whether she has put up an assignment, if you work and did not see it do not bother to do it because she will not take it, she will not work with you and will be annoyed if you ask. Excredits time consuming and are only worth 2 points
She gives so much work, and sometimes doesn't fully explain how to do it. There is a lot of reading, and you will not get away with only skimming through. She makes seating charts that can be otherwise uncomfortable, especially if you're not there on the day she makes em, you get stuck in a bad seat all semester. Lectures boring. Passive aggressive
Avoid her at all cost worst professor I ever had seriously
Professor Ross runs a challenging class, but engaging lectures make it manageable. Doing the readings and taking good notes are key. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for review prep.
Gives you no directions, and you have no idea what you're doing 90% of the time.
she does heavy lectures and requires students to transcribe her words and if you miss class or notes its over. she doesn't have the material on Brightspace and won't repeat so you'd best prepare. although she does give extra credit here and there.
I have had her for Two different history classes, and she has been horrible each time. will not help you when you need it. I missed a test due military obligation; it took me almost a month of emailing her and getting her department chair involved for her to re-open a 10-question quiz. avoid, if possible, OCC has much better options for professors.
Won't tell you what to study for when she gives tests.
Like an English class so many essay like papers and we are only on week three. She starts class speaking and doesn't stop, no notes on the bored just what she is saying and during the first few days she completely taught the whole class wrong info and later emailed with the correct info.
I have been taking this class for almost 4 weeks, and there are already two essays within the first 4 weeks assigned. One essay we had to read a whole chapter outside of class, and due to learning disabilities, I am most likely going to get a poor grade on it as I don't have accommodations yet. Honestly, take a different professor.
Ms Ross comes into class late, develops an attitude when asked to repeat a sentence, speaking a mile a minute, she does not get grades back in an average time, overall has made it clear with her rude comments she did not want to teach our class and was forced to as it was dropped by another professor. Very uncomfortable in class, do not recommend!!
Wants everything printed out, posts long homework assignments the night before class, participation is a huge part of your grade but retaining any information that she is teaching is impossible. There's almost nothing ever posted on brightspace for us to go over, she talks the entire period and we are expected to copy every single word down.
avoid at all costs. seriously. absolute miserable human being. views everything through a racial lens. extremely uncomfortable to even sit through her class. treats it like a masters level course & cannot even be bothered to show up on time. dumps all your grades onto you after the final exam. what an awful experience. tech illiterate. mean. nasty.
No communication at all, no after-hours, rude and will not cooperate with any accommodations. DO NOT USE THIS TEACHER!!
