Tara is the best lab instructor for Bio 14. The most helpful, most easy going, easy grader, explains everything well, and her quizzes are simple. She is the best-- take her if you can.
This is the best Biology professor you will have the pleasure of working with at GW. Will help you pass/get an A at all costs. Her tests are fairly hard if you're not already biology savvy, but deffinately not impossible. Take her for BISC 03 and 04 if you can. Take full advantage of the help she offers. You will not regret it.
sooo nice....her tests are hard but she offers review sessions that are a HUGE help so take advantage...she always want to help you and you really do learn
This was an amazing class. The test were not very hard, and I feel like I learned a lot. I'm probally going to apply to medschools, in large part because of this class.
she tries very hard to get you to do well in the class and is interested in you actually learning something. puts a lot of effort into classes/assignments/etc.. is very available for help. however, she is hard to follow and a little disorganized during lectures. but she really wants to see you succeed in her class.
Tara is an excellent instructor for those like myself with no aptitude for bio. She will help you succeed in her class by providing extra credit and study sessions. THE LAB IS DIFFICULT AND COUNTS FOR 40% OF YOUR GRADE. Overall, I was satisfied but wished I had studied more for the lab quizzes. Much better than Doebel, however you slice it.
Tara is extremely helpful and caring. She really wants her students to learn. Her tests can be difficult, but aren't impossible, and she gives extra credit/curves when the class average is low enough. The lab is a pain in the ass, though, and counts for 40% of your grades...I would have had an A in the class if it weren't for the lab.
I only had her for my bio labs but she was very kind and very helpful. I would take any class that she taught. She really cares about her students and wants them to learn and be challanged
Tara is very helpful and very clear with what she expects from her students. Attendance is monitored by those clickers. She occasionally gives extra credit, too. I had to miss class once, so I met with her, and instead of just asking me what I needed help with, she went through the entire powerpoint. Tests are hard - but she holds reviews.
Amazing professor. Had no interest in Bio prior but she made it interesting and easy to learn. She really cares about how we do and takes extra steps to ensure our sucess
Very helpful. She tries to get you as man points as possible through a huge amount of extra credits, and the class isn't too hard. What professors should be like.
Scully will stop at nothing to make sure her class does well, with extra credit and test reviews always available. Labs can be a pain (especially the midterm), but usually give a better understanding of the course material. Recommended GCR for anyone short a science credit.
Go to class and memorize the powerpoints and you will have an A.
She understands that 99% of the class is taking it to fulfill a GCR, so she does everything to make the material simple and to make sure you get a good grade. Tells you that tests are straight from the powerpoints, and gives way too many extra credit opportunities, not that students complain. Very approachable and willing to help. Def recommended.
This class is a good class to take for the science GCR. Its a bit difficult but if you study real hard for the lab final and the lecture exams you should get at B even if you're not good at science. Scully is a great teacher and gives out extra credit. I would recommend going to her office hours.
Stay Away. If you don't have the time to study constantly for this class, you will not get anything above a C. Scully is not clear. Her PPoints go way too in-depth and her lectures are very fast paced. Lab is fine.
Gives an absurd amount of material on the tests. NIce person but the tests are borderline impossible. DONT TAKE
Scully may be one of the most caring professors at GW. She truly wants to see students do well, and will help every way she can. The tests are a little material-heavy, but she works with extra credit to make she everyone has the chance to do well. She knows it is a requirement class and tries to make it interesting for everyone. GREAT professor!
Prof. Scully is one of the nicest professors at GW - she truly cares about students and that's always refreshing. The tests are doable if you memorize the powerpoints. Definitely take this class for your science requirement, but just know that a reasonable amount of effort is required...it's not just an easy A.
Professor Scully really cares about her students -- GPAC course but very material heavy, surprisingly challenging for non-science majors. Be prepared for less "nutrition" and more biology concepts i.e. protein synthesis, cell biology, etc. Go to her exam review sessions! Overall great professor and good class with challenging material -- not easy A
As others have said, she is very nice woman and is willing to help you whenever you need it. However, she gives WAYYYYYYY too much material in her power points and expects you to know WAYYYYY to much stuff for each test. This is NOT as easy A. Her review is skewed because so many people have highly rated her for being nice. Can also be unclear.
Professor Scully is very clear in her lectures and if you show up, take notes, and study, you will do well. Pretty much standard Biology material, so if you took it is high school and did well, you should have no problem. She is passionate about the material, and about helping her students, so if you get the chance, take her.
Scully knows EVERYTHING about biology. If you ever have a question about diseases, infection, the body, animals, global warming, evolution, what have you, she knows it and she can explain it to you CRYSTAL clear. She's super sweet and only wants students to like biology. Super approachable. Take good notes to study for tests and you'll do well.
Scully is really nice and approachable. Labs are sometimes hard though. Go to review sessions, it will help a lot.
The problem is she gives a TON of material in the powerpoints and no study guides which means theres wayyyyyy to much to study which makes the test tough. The content isnt hard to understand but theres way too much to remember.
Scully honestly wants her students to get an A and she will help you get there! Group projects are a pretty big part of the grade, but if you're stuck with a dumb group like I was, Scully will make sure you get a grade worthy of your participation. LOVED the class and would 100% recommend it for those looking for a GPA booster.
She gives group assignments during class but they're generally pretty easy. Other than that, this is your basic biology class. Nothing too difficult or scary. Pretty easy. And she's a really nice and intelligent teacher. If you need the course requirement andor if you have a slight interest in biology, i recommend you take the class.
Your basic biology class that's easy if you're willing to put a fair amount of effort into it before the midterm and final. Definitely possible to get an A. Labs are difficult though, and some TAs grade way too harshly. Sometimes Scully and her powerpoints are unclear but get the textbook because it's crystal clear and super easy to read.
A really inspirational teacher for women looking to go into science - very clear, very fair, very enthusiastic about her subject.
Professor Scully is passionate about the topic which helps a lot, she is willing to explain things repeatedly and doesn't easily get frustrated. She is fair with grading and lab averages. She was flexible with scheduling conflicts and really wants you to understand the material. you could only fail by never submitting any work, it is harder to fail
Scully is a tough professor that doesn't work with her students. Students frequently struggle because expectations are never made clear (unless you check blackboard every few minutes).
Professor tries to cover too much material in the course at a level meant for biology majors. Don't take this as an easy lab. Group projects and presentations aren't given clear guideline and are graded extremely tough.
Definitely regret taking this course for the service GPAC requirement. Professor tried to teach a Biology class meant for majors to non-majors and was VERY unclear about the service aspect and its connection/grade for the students.
I took this class for my science requirement, and as someone who dislikes/isn't good at science classes, this class was easy. The lectures are short and she presents right from the Powerpoint. You can tell she's very into the subject. Material covered is actually semi-interesting. Only complaint: labs are annoying (prequizzes & postquizzes weekly).
Super passionate. Don't skip too many lectures though bc while she's pretty clear in class, just the powerpoint is a little confusing. HOWEVER. Her TA Ballesteros is awful. He had a paper for 3+ weeks before he posted comments at midnight Friday of break, & I had my next paper due that Mon, so I couldn't follow up or even make enough changes.
She is AMAZING!
Take this class, or any with Tara!
Most helpful and kind professor at GW. She really takes an interest in her students and wants you to do well! Take this class or any class with her!
Dr. Scully is a really nice person that cares. She is a passionate lecture and knows her stuff. Group projects and attendance (iclickers) are done in lecture so you need to be there. Lots of her material relates to the real world. Beware of lab - it will pull your grade down if you aren't careful with TAs' very very harsh grading.
Not very understanding of emergency issues.
Hint: Take the service class, not the lecture one. Benefits: no lab or lab quizzes, only a midterm (final project presentation), and all you need to really do is do service work and write about it. Dr. Scully is passionate about what she does, and all of her classes are great - it's just that the service one is less comprehensive, and far easier
Good lectures, only one test, group projects and community service hours. Easy A
Love Tara Scully! Incredibly interesting and relevant class and super passionate professor. Genuinely cares about her students'- both their success in and outside of class. Accessible, easy to talk to and relatable. Highly recommend if you're not good at science. She brings challenging material down to an understandable level. I would recommend!
Professor is very sweet and obviously loves biology. I thought the class was overly easy, almost to the point of common sense. She goes into a lot of topics but only the basics. The textbook is irrelevant, do not buy. Go to class she tells you exactly what you need to know in lecture. Instructions aren't always clear, stay on top of projects.
Loved Tara Scully! I am not a Science person and ended up with an A in her class. Tests are very easy, being that both the midterm and the final are multiple choice and Professor Scully is extremely passionate about her topic and clear in what she teaches. If you are not a Science major and are trying to get your science credit take this class!!!
Scully is the most amazing professor. If you can find a class that is open, TAKE HER!!
Prof. Scully is great!! Lots of work in the class, but the work is definitely do-able and fast. Don't expect to do nothing for her service-commitment courses, however, as she will PUSH you to finish all the work (and sometimes there is a lot). Nevertheless, very easy A.
A sweetheart! She's so intelligent and LOVES biology and really wants you to succeed! Just do the bare minimum and you'll get an A
Scully's class was a pretty easy yet engaging course that fulfilled one of my science requirements. While I didn't enjoy the course material very much, the course was made better by the vast amount of assignment grades (making it easy to get an A) and Scully's great interpersonal communication. I didn't enjoy the class but I would take it again.
Scully was a fantastic instructor - you could tell she's very knowledgeable about this subject. She also did a good job relaying that information + making it interesting to a classroom full of non-science majors. Don't put off your service hours until the end, outline/study her PowerPoints before the exams, come to class, + you'll be fine.
Tara Scully is an absolute angel, so sweet and always willing to help you. Does so much for the class. There is no lab, just service hours, which is amazing for people like me who aren't good at lab stuff. Lectures are great and easy to understand. The tests were fairly difficult, but if you do all the assignments you will be fine! great class
Professor Scully was a fabulous professor! She really cares about her students and made class fun and interesting. She will challenge you though. Tests were pretty hard but she has review sessions. The only problem was that class was only 50 minutes so there was A LOT of material crammed into so little time and some things were then rushed over.
Never take her class. You would have a plenty of Quiz !!!! Quiz!!!!!
I did not enjoy this class. With little bio background I felt unprepared for difficult tests and the grading (done by TAs) extremely nit-picky and I felt generally unfair. Professor Scully herself is fantastic. Knowledgable and super passionate about what she does, kind and helpful! Don't know that I would recommend the class however.
Professor Scully is awesome. Her class is definitely not an easy A, but an A is possible. The lectures are optional (she puts all of her slides online), but if you go to class you can occasionally earn bonus points. Labs are mandatory. You will need to study for the exams, but there is only a midterm and final. No papers, and no homework.
Labs are a lot of tedious work (pre and post quizzes) and her ppts are confusing as hell. Unless u like bio, this class will be boring but definitely easy. If u need to fulfill a science requirement take it
Scully is a great professor and it made a non-science person enjoy a science class. A lot of it involves basic biology knowledge so its an easy class to take if you have experience in the subject.
Her class is only 50 minutes long, she is interesting, and her tests are pretty fair. If you show up to class, read the textbook ,and study accordingly you should receive at least an A-. Labs are tedious but that goes for almost any science course. she will round your grade up if you attend the review sessions she runs prior to exams.
She's a great professor, and if you do the work it is an easy A. Go to lectures to get attendance and bonus points. Puts powerpoints up, tests are pretty fair. Definitely would take again.
I had no interest in taking science classes in college, but my major required it, so I found Tara on Rate My Professor. I took her both semesters freshman year (BISC1004 and BISC1006) and could not speak any more highly of her. She truly cares about what she is teaching and about her students. I recommend her on all accounts.
She is very passioned about biology. The exams are not very hard if you spent some time studying. The grading is fair.
One of the most enlightening courses I've taken at GW thus far! There are multiple professors teaching the course, but Scully is the lead. She is extremely sweet, accessible, and intelligent! Participation slightly matters in lecture, but it's crucial in discussion. There is a year long group project, 2 exams, and several smaller assignments.
Really sweet, passionate, and knows her stuff. The labs are kind of annoying, but if you study and attend the lecture this class should be no problem.
coolest professor i've ever had - you make up the final exam questions + she gives you the answers. service is so much fun + really easy, just get it done asap. easy grader as long as you show effort. go to the exam review sessions + office hours, she will bump your grade up at the end of the semester. easy A and you learn a lot for being a non-bio
Dr. Scully is a professor that really cares about sustainability and science. The class was not very challenging. However, beware this class is largely based around groupwork. If you are not assigned to a good group switch because this will severely affect your grade. 3 test and reading is important. The grade is largely based on volunteer service.
If you are looking for the easiest way to get credit for a lab science course, take this course! The easiest class I've ever taken. Be prepared, you are expected to volunteer in place of a lab and you have to document these hours well, but the tests and exams are a complete joke and you spend a month listening to group presentations.
I have had here for 2 beginning bio classes, and she is AMAZING! Such a caring, nice person and is very helpful outside of class. Her lectures are simple and posted on blackboard. Her tests have a lot of information but they are so easy! Definitely would take again, its an easy A and an enjoyable class. Love her
The class is taught by many professors, but Scully is primary. The course is full of way too many busy-work assignments, and attendance counts as 5% of grade (need to pay for Reef). Course is entirely regurgitationno synthesis or analysis required. If you want to learn about UN SDGs and ONLY UN SDGs, this is the course for you.
Take a course with Professor Scully! I took Bio of Nutrition/ Health. That course has helped me with so many other foundations for other courses. She is a caring professor who is actually excited to be doing what she does. She teaches little memorization tricks that I am sitting here, 2 years later still using, because I actually REMEMBER!
THIS CLASS is a disaster -- avoid at all costs. It sounds really cool and should be BUT IT IS NOT. The most unorganized, ridiculous class I have ever taken at GWU. The assignments are all unclear, wasted so much of my time on this class trying to dissect the professors extremely poor written assignments.
Despite this class being the easiest for non-science majors, it still felt hard bc Scully is so knowledgable. The first two exams were hard, but they aren't worth many points so you can still easily get an A. There are so many opportunities to do well that your grade goes up fast. The lab is just volunteer hours which was easy and a big grade boost
Easy class, interesting material but it just gets dull because it's so simple sometimes. Grade is based largely on volunteer work which is cool. 100% recommend as a class to take for dust minor or ccas lab credit.
First off, SUST 1001 is co-taught which is just a time to be alive. Really the longest two-hour class ever. Love my TA Chirs Hart, such a gem. The midterm is not like the quizzes, honestly, I'm not sure how to describe how to study for it. Interesting class but difficult to concentrate. 2 (3-5 page SDG papers), almost weekly quizzes, midterm, final
Great class. It's taught by multiple professors. Do the work and you'll get an A, not too hard. There will be a group project that takes up a big chunk of the semester. Don't buy the textbook, it's not necessary.
Prof. Scully was not as understanding through the COVID-19 as the lion's share of my other professors were. Although she only administers this class, she could have made it more accommodating and thought-provoking, especially the forums.
This class is easy for fulfilling GPAC requirements. Your 20 service hours basically count as lab, and I actually really enjoyed the places I volunteered at (THEARC). Lecture involves completing a worksheet as a group, and the last month is spent watching classmates' presentations.
This is a service learning class but Scully makes this 1000 level class so confusing and terrible. She is not a good teacher and the way she runs it is just terrible and so unclear. The TAs did not help much either and the quizzes aren't easy. There's an on going group project and group work. Might be bc it was online but either way, it's not easy!
Shes very understand and kind.
A bit of a disconnect between the prof and the students but one of my favorite classes. The material is super interesting and I like hearing from multiple professors. The outlines were annoying to do but is a useful tool to study for the midterm and final
Tara Scully is the best professor at this school hands down. She cares about all her students and if you're passionate about sustainability or biology she will create opportunities for you to succeed. I genuinely found my path in college thanks to her support, and I can't speak of her highly enough. She's a phenomenal person and professor.
I took Prof Scully's Food Nutrition and Service class. It's an introductory level 1000 class and meant as a general elective. Yet, the course content is so heavy and deeply rooted into biology, it should NOT be considered an introduction class. Her tests are difficult and tricky and ridiculous for a 1007 module if you ask me.
Professor Scully is the KINDEST person and really cares so much about her students. She brought her adorable dog Sunny to class, which was such a treat. While this is meant to be an intro level class (mostly taken by non-bio majors), it was definitely more challenging. You have to read the textbook and go to lectures to do well.
The only good part of this class was the dog. Most of the videos shown in class were a decade old and contained information disproven by modern science (also problematic info). Definitely not the intro freshman class it's supposed to be. Not accessible by email and grading was harsh.
Although Professor Scully may be a sweet person as an individual, but shes really entitled to her own opinion. Furthermore, grading wise she seems to avoid communication with the students and disregard students concern regarding the difficulty of the class. If you are non-Science major person, do not take this class.
Just dont take her if you arent science major or have well profound knowledge in biology
Just don't take her. "If you care about your mental health." The service projects that are recommended put students in danger. She also needs to stop talking about politics.
Take her BISC 1008 class if you are a non-bio major and you need it for your GPAC. The textbook is very easy to understand and her lectures are great. I left that class actually liking biology and gaining essential knowledge. The lab meets about once per month. Only 2 quizzes, a paper, and a few group assignments.
Great person, but a not-so-great professor. It seems as if she expects you to have a greater knowledge of biology than an intro class would typically entail. Doesn't explain new terms and leaves us all confused, but she does bring in her dog sometimes. Quizzes/papers are way too hard for a class like this. Non-science majors, maybe look elsewhere.
If you are taking her class, be prepared for nonsense. So unorganized, and ridiculous.
I don't know why Professor Scully got so many bad reviews, but she truly is a great professor. If you read the PowerPoint you will be more than okay with the two quizzes given in the semester. Highly recommend taking her course.
I don't understand where the bad ratings are coming from, because shes by far the best professor I had at GW. Paired with the amazing TAs, as long as you follow directions and put effort into assignments and projects, I guarantee this class will be so much fun. Doing service was also a really fun, so go to a lot of those!
Attendance mandatory but HW was very easy. Class is a guest lecturer every week (very interesting honestly, wide range of topics) and discussion is unnecessary. If you do the work and show up you will get an A. Note that 10 hours of food related community service is required.
This was a boring class but I took it for an easy science credit. The exams were not easy, it was a lot of material but they were only worth about 10 points. Also, she does in class group projects (no electronics allowed) and in class questions for credit. Lab is also boring/useless but usually ends earlier than the time listed.
Prof.Scully is very nice and has good lecture slides. Attendance is mandatory in lecture(only 50 min) + lab. Extra credit chances but study hard for the tests. Lab is very tedious with pre/post quizzes, lab video + handout every lab.TA's for lecture can be super slow at grading so be prepared. Overall, I reccomend BISC1006 and Prof Scully!
I would not take BISC1006 again. You can take better science gen-ed courses other than this one. The labs are tedious with a pre and post-quiz and picking up trash for labs. The lectures were boring and the midterm was on paper with a bubble sheet. The class is very lecture-heavy and provides little to no materials to prepare for the final exam.
Dr. Scully cares deeply about her students and is a great lecturer who incorporates a lot of interesting material in her slides. I did not expect to learn as much as I did. Labs were very tedious but extremely easy compared to other intro-level science classes. Group activities were very annoying but doable if you get put with competent students.
Great professor and an easy class. Labs were somewhat tedious, especially if you get a bad TA. Midterm and a final, 4 labs (with pre and post quizzes and a video submission), and a presentation in lab. Group assignments in lecture with the potential for extra credit. Overall, the class is straightforward. Professor Scully is amazing and very kind.
Avoid the BISC1005 class at any cost!!!
best professor at gw
Volunteering instead of a lab most weeks, which was nice. Group project but all components are pretty simple. However, her lectures are really rushed and can be hard to understand, so you will prob need to learn material outside of class to do well on quizzes. Overall easy class, but there's just a lot of a little assignments that felt unnecessary.
28% lab, 12% midterm, 24% semester project,18% attendance/participation, 18% final. semester project is super easy and lab isn't bad. accused all of us of cheating on the midterm even though the average was 68% & was hard to study for. no curve, cumulative final. can miss 30% of the lectures & get full credit. decent option for non-science majors
AVOID SCULLY AT ALL COSTS! The lectures never made sense, she never posted grades on time, no one (even the TA) ever knew what assignments consisted of or when they were due. Professor doesn't check emails, quizzes are near impossible despite being a GenEd class. Tough grader, made it impossible to succeed. DO NOT TAKE HER!
lab portion was very easy. lecture exams and group work was the most taxing part of the class. Scully was very nice but did not prepare students effectively for her exams. She will tell you to study all the content and then ask obscure questions on the exams (you really do need to study she is very paranoid about cheating and will accuse you).
Professor Scully is unorganized when it comes to this class and has no involvement in labs. Lectures can sometimes be helpful in class, but with group projects and other questions, it can feel like very little learning is done. She seems caring and knowledgable, but the time for class was not utilized effectively to improve learning.
Scully is a super nice person but a bad professor. Your success in the lab will depend on your TA. I had a super cool one, so the quizzes and lab worksheet grading wasn't bad. The group work we did in lecture was really a pain because my group would never know what was going on. Tests were okay, but she refuses to scale, so study!!
I took BISC 1005 will professor Scully in the Fall. In my opinion, it is a decent class and the easiest GenEd. The course is graded on a two exams (30% total), participation in class, an easy connections project, and lab, which depends on your TA. At the end of the course, Professor Scully curved the final grade by 3 points. I would def recommend.
Professor Scully is kind and engaging, but the class can be tedious. Labs have pre/post quizzes and video submissions. Exams are tough, but in-class activities and unstuck AI help with prep.
Prof Scully is super awesome. Very clear lecturer with easy tests and a very manageable bio class overall. Great person!!
Professor Scully is so nice! she really wants you to succeed and encourages using her as a resource. her class is interesting and she is passionate about the topics. that being said, i don't think she is the best lecturer- they can be a little unorganized. but the material isn't hard and a little bit of studying will take u a long way
STEER CLEAR OF SCULLY AT ALL COSTS! The material was never explained properly. Nobody could ever explain what we were supposed to do. Professor ignores all communication attempts, and the exams are virtually impossible to pass despite this being a basic required course. Extremely harsh grader who sets students up for failure.
She is very passionate and easier gen-ed to take. Lectures are fast-paced but everything is posted online, but labs were the worst part of the class. It was busy work and it was basically an overcomplicated reteaching of lecture. Loved how you are graded on like 5/6 different things and exams are only worth ~25% of the final grade, overall decent.
kind professor and really cares about the students. the midterm and final were lowkey specific, but as long as you study her posted lectures, you're fine. pretty easy
Scully is very kind/a good teacher but this class is so tedious. It's HS bio: boring long lectures, super time-consuming lab activities, and class discussion/group activities that just don't work in a huge lecture hall with ~200 people. Generally speaking the class is super easy and fine for a gen-ed, but I found it to be difficult to get through.
