If you are a non-science major just looking to fulfill your science requirement, this class is for you! Lecture slides are online, homework is optional, and tests are only on 1-2 chapters. Tedious "media labs" but the rest is fine... although the lab portion isnt great either, it's easy.
Dr. Todd is the worst professor I have had at Vanderbilt. She is rude and crabby. This class is so boring.
If you go to class, you'll do well. Media Labs were a pain in the ass but the tests were fair. Lab was boring in many cases, but this was here first time teaching the class and she used the old lab book, so hopefully she'll change it.
Great class for those just trying to fulfil cple requirement. tests are easy and she does a pretty good job explaining the material.
She makes a boring class interesting. She is so helpful and tries to get to know everyone.
dr. todd is great...a little boring sometimes because she reads straight from the powerpoint slides (that are posted on blackboard) so attendance doesn't help, but sometimes there are attendance quizzes. easy A if you study and can memorize the material.
Dr. Todd teaches in an easy & understandable way. Notes come directly from Powerpoint slides & are posted online. Weekly quizzes, also given online, are great grade boosters if you understand the material. If you don't understand, ASK & she'll help. Tests are fairly easy & homework counts as extra credit. Great for AXLE & CPLE science requirement.
An easy A to fufill liberal arts requirements. She always posts notes online, her tests are insanely easy, plus group projects and in-class assignments specifically designed to raise your grade. She explains concepts thoroughly, and does her best to keep the topics and difficulty at a level for non-majors.
Her class was pretty boring. She was a decent teacher, not one I would recommend but not one to avoid either. She is very understanding if you fall behind though, which is helpful.
This class is great for non-science majors. Dr. Todd is helpful and tries to make the material relevant to us. Tests were not bad, and homework was minimal. The lab isn't bad either, as long as a you get a good TA. (We usually got out of lab at least an hour early.)
You really didn't have to attend class as she posted all the notes and lecture slides online. She explained things well and was very well prepared for class everyday. However, the tests were hard to do really well on. This class was not the cake walk I expected.
She is a great teacher. She prints out the lectures for you and is very clear on what she is teaching. She is always willing to help and you will hear about her cute kids. She makes chemistry easy because she knows a majority of students are only taking it for axle. Do study for tests though and take the extra credit.
If you have a chemistry background, which i did not, it's a perfect/easy way to fulfill the science requirement. otherwise it's a little difficult. thank god for dr. todd cause she was funny and verrryyy helpful
She was an okay professor, but she did not go over the material efficiently and would ramble about side topics.
Sometimes gets off topic a little but very helpful and is by far the best chem prof for gen chem. very understanding and always willing to listen and help in office hours. makes jokes & talks about her kids occasionally. take if you have to take chem...although gen chem is crazy hard so try not to take it unless youre set on pre med or engineering
I love her :)
Great professor. She's very sarcastic which kept me awake, but DO NOT take this class unless you need to. I took 2 years of chem in high school & still sucked at it. but out of all the gen chem teachers, shes the best.
best gen chem professor by far! clearly passionate about chemistry and she gives out great notes at the beginning of every lecture. she's also the only one who gives review sessions for the tests. i definitely recommend her to anyone who has to suffer through this course
Todd is awesome. She prints out the notes for class so all you have to do is write a few words. She has review sessions before every test and goes over everything you need to know. She is the best Gen Chem professor.
TARA TOD IS AMAZING. seriously. hands-down the best chem 102 teacher. she prints notes for you and takes you through a powerpoint every class. lecture is sometimes dull but that is rare. she also has a great sense of humor which makes the class more interesting! seriously- take Todd.
SUCH a great professors. Hilarious and obviously knows her stuff. Holds study sessions, prints notes for her class, and uses powerpoint. Take her if you can!!!!
definitely the best chem professor out there. take her if you can. and if you don't get in, just come to her lectures anyways. she prints the notes out for you and explains everything so well.
If you have little chemistry background knowledge, this class will be painfully difficult. That said, if you've taken AP Chem then you probably won't have to attend half the lectures. But, if you must suffer through this class, I'd advise taking it with Todd. She is fairly clear and will help you upon request. Good luck... you'll need it.
Todd is an excellent professor. This class is hard if you don't have AP Chem background, but if you read the textbook, make notes, and pay attention in class you should be fine. She hands out notes which help you pay attention. She's also really funny and keeps class interesting. The tests are hard if you don't read the textbook or do review Qs.
Gen Chem is definitely a weed out class and will be hard for those who didn't do well in AP Chem, but Todd is a wonderful teacher. She prints out notes that are very helpful when studying for tests and always finishes all the material we are supposed to cover (we are consistently ahead of the other sections) without skipping anything important.
awesome!!
Average Chem teacher. Class is easy as is the homework, but the tests are very difficult. Professor Todd gives practice problems and notes to help review for the tests. Clicker questions count as extra credit unlike some other sections, so if you don't want to go to discussion but still want EC take Todd
Very funny, keeps it as interesting as it can be. Provides notes that you can fill in. Tests are standardized but she prepares you well if you put in the work as well. Overall good class. I would recommend her over the others.
She is definitely the best 102 teacher. She gives out extra credit for clicker questions and posts fill-in-the-blank notes, although you'll have to print them out now. She's fairly funny during class and very helpful outside of it. There's a lot of helpful online homework. The textbook is useless, however.
Definitely the best gen chem professor at Vanderbilt. Students in the other sections were always asking me to email them her notes and powerpoints because they were so helpful. She's very clear in class, and gives you an extra cushion in your grade if you answer click er questions in class and attend the discussion sections.
A lot of people seem to like her because she has lecture notes which go with her slides and her clicker questions give extra credit. Her lectures hit the key points, but you probably need to use the book as a supplement. Tests are standardized, but she prepares you well for them. Funny and very casual lecturer.
Todd is DEFINITELY the best! She's funny and is a clear lecturer, and she provides helpful notes. I rarely used my textbook. The class is standardized but Todd prepares you well for the exams. Make sure to do all the HW (you can easily get a 98-99) and maximize your EC (either discussion or clicker) because you'll definitely want the points.
Class is extremely hard but she is the best teacher to take it with. Classes are helpful and she posts great slides online for the tests.
The class is difficult but Todd made the tests so much easier. I had Phillips last semester and Todd is so much better. Her notes give you a great base and she's helpful. She cares about her students and will give advice. Even if you're not enrolled in her class, go to her lectures.
I found her and her lecture notes to be unclear and her class to be boring. I retook the class over the summer with Phillips and liked him a lot better.
Very clear and direct in class and about expectations. Gives out study guides that you fill out with each lecture and contain everything you need to know for the test. Tests are based on the book and lecture is not mandatory but clicker questions are given to assess attendance (which is worth extra credit). Pick Todd, she knows her stuff.
Chem is a weed-out class, so you want a good prof. Todd is the BEST of the options. She's nice, but sassy. Make sure you think about it before you ask a question. Do the optional homework problems, and you'll be set for at least a B w/o the curve.
Todd is extremely clear with her explanations in class and clickers can really boost grades. Posts useful lecture slides for studying. Not too difficult with some effort although many find chem difficult in general.
She was very condescending. Did not care if students were interested or passed the class. She knew the material well, but did not really care if her students were struggling. You can get a good grade if you have no social life and spend all your time studying. Otherwise, good luck.
Todd is a great professor! She makes class interesting and posts her notes online before class so that you can print them out ahead of time. Chem 102 is hard in general because it's a weed-out class, but she tries to help you out as much as she can.
Just repeats the book. She's grades exams harder than other sections.
Dr. Todd is by far the best professor at Vanderbilt. She has power point lectures and notes based on the power point that make the material easier to understand. Chemistry is a weed out class, which is annoying, but if you're going to take chemistry get Professor Todd. She is always willing to help during office hours.
Dr. Todd definitely helped me out through the semester when I was struggling in the course. It was very tough, but compared to the other gen chem professors, she seemed to be the most helpful. She posts lecture slides and notes to fill in online and she even typed out a 12 page study guide for the final. I wish I had her again next semester.
Dr. Todd was a great teacher. Despite having a class of above 200 people, her lectures are very clear. She even provides online notes which you can print out and fill in as she goes along. Available for help and wants you to succeed. She also posts everything online in case you miss class. Tests are pretty difficult since it is chem, but fair.
Todd is a very clear lecturer and covers everything that you will need to know for the tests during lectures. Lectures are worth going to as she covers lots of material in each class. Tests are pretty straight forward with some effort can pass the class though many people find that chemistry itself difficult.
Go to office hours if you like the material and want to get a better understanding of what's going on. She welcomed chemistry questions for curiosity's sake. It made Gen Chem much more interesting! Difficulty was not bad. There's always a question or two on tests that annoy, but tests are generally swimmingful. Do some problems in the book.
Since the chem tests are standardized, most of the material on the tests comes from the textbook. That being said, Todd is a great lecturer, and she really explains the material well. She is really intimidating though, so be prepared for that if you ever go to ask her questions or come in late to class.
Since the Chem tests are standardized, most of the material on the tests comes from the textbook. However, Todd is a great lecturer, and she really explains the material well. She is really intimidating though, so be prepared for that if you ever go to ask her questions or come in late to class.
Monotone, boring and hard exams. Felt it was not much as helpful, but I had a good recitation TA though.
Great teacher. She's very straight-forward about what you need to prepare for the tests. Read the textbook and do a lot of practice problems for an A.
GenChem is a weed out course, doesn't matter what the professors say. Dr. Todd is helpful but the class is literal hell. All the kids that took AP Chem in high school kill the curve. If you do have to take this class, go to Dr. Todd's office hours. She will always help you through any tough problems.
Even though 8am chem made me want to cry, Todd's lectures are interesting and she is an engaging lecturer- if i fell asleep it was because of extreme sleep deprivation, not boredom. I learned a lot in this class, and even though she's a tough grader, she also made the tests so you were well prepared and if you studied you were fine.
Great teacher. Todd makes notes for the class to print out that clearly follows along with her PowerPoints. The class is very difficult and you must study and do a lot of practice problems to be successful.
Dr. Todd is very intimidating in lecture but extremely helpful during office hours. Gen chem is tough no matter who you take but Dr. Todd is definitely the best at teaching and explaining the concepts from the book. I would recommend her over any of the other gen chem professors.
Her lectures were pretty good, but where she really shines is in recitation (I had her instead of a TA).
Excellent teacher. Absolutely best CHEM teacher there is, TAKE her if given the option. While I certainly didn't enjoy the class, I cannot deny that Tara Todd was an excellent chem teacher. She had an issue where too many students from the OTHER lecture periods would skip their own professors periods and come to her lectures.
CHEM 1601 is very tough. Be prepared to work hard even if you have taken AP Chemistry. Dr. Todd is excellent during lectures. Don't skip lectures because there are 3% extra points for clicker questions.
Textbook-heavy class, professors don't really matter for gen chem.
She's really good at explaining the concepts clearly and doing helpful practice problems. Pretty much all you need from a gen chem professor....
Todd is a fair professor if you keep up with the work and pay attention in the class. Make sure you spend time practicing because that's the key to succeeding in her class. She's also very helpful, but most students don't take advantage of that because she can be intimidating. Overall, a pretty good choice for gen chem.
Todd is a really awesome professor. She's sassy/funny but she gets to the point and cares about her students. She gives you notes to follow along with her powerpoint lectures and a lot of clicker questions for extra credit. The tests are tough but doing old practice exams helps a lot. Grading is fair and there is extra credit.
Amazing professor, lecturer, and woman. She is a must-take for any chemistry course.
Great Lectures, but the class tests are hard as hell, even if you took AP Chem in high school. Work your ass off for a decent grade.
Clear lectures with easy-to-visualize analogies for hard concepts. Uses class time very efficiently. She's also quite funny and loves to tell stories about her kids. Attendance not necessary, clicker questions do count as extra credit but she will also consider quiz scores. Exams are never easy however...
Very good teacher. Helpful, but a bit sassy. Tests were moderate in difficulty and required a few day's worth of studying. Not terribly difficult, contrary to expectations. Goes a bit above and beyond AP material. Show up to class - fill-in notes and clickers are extremely helpful.
Professor Todd has amazing lectures. She is the best professor Gen Chem professor there is. Gen Chem is a weed-out course but a lots of students do well if they make sure to put in the effort and go to her lectures. She very clearly explains the material and cares about her students. She also gives out extra credit questions in class
Todd's the best gen chem prof you'll get. Lectures are clear and she has a good sense of humour. Tests are pretty consistent with the material covered in class. As long as you go to lectures and discussion and do homework, you won't have to read the textbook all that much. Clicker questions are added as bonus points at the end of the semester.
Majority of your grade is tests. If you did not take AP Chemistry in high school, then you will have to put in a lot of work. Class is very fast paced and all based on lecture. You can earn bonus points for attendance and in class clicker questions, but it only helps so much. Great teacher though during office hours.
Dr. Todd is an excellent professor who really, really knows her stuff. (That's important, because Gen Chem is a kick in the teeth for a majority of its students.) Todd's lectures are fluid, thorough, and complete enough to give you an edge for Gen Chem's brutal exams. If STEM /Chem isn't your strongest suit, you're gonna want to go with Todd.
Good prof, good attitude and helpful in office hours. Gen chem is a hard class in general so be prepared to read the textbook and do sapling multiple times and attend classes and taking notes.
Todd is easily the best gen chem teacher you can get at Vanderbilt. She is consistent and intelligent in her lectures, and she makes the tests, so she's your most direct source to test material. She also asks plenty of clicker questions for a possible 10 point bonus. The material is difficult if you haven't taken AP chem, but you can still succeed.
Best Gen Chem professor, no question about it. She may come off as a little mean and snarky at first, but her sarcastic sense of humor is awesome! Amazing and very clear lectures, and very helpful. Don't get on her bad side. Gives lots of extra credit. Be prepared to study, but the class isn't terrible, especially if you took AP Chem.
Prof. Todd is an incredible professor. She made every topic and chemistry incredibly clear and made sure every person in lecture understood it, providing a lot of examples and problems to work out in class. In addition, she always makes herself very available to students. She is very sassy and does not mess around, but in a great way.
Dr. Todd is 100% the best gen chem professor. She is very good at explaining complicated concepts clearly. If you go to her office hours, she is VERY helpful. Her lecture notes and powerpoint are really good at condensing the information from the textbook into what is important. Class is still very difficult but taking it with Dr. Todd will help!
Do not take for Organic Chemistry, for she has no clue how to teach the material nor cares about being effective at instruction. Attempt Organic under any circumstances but a class where she is the professor
The class definitely requires a bit of studying, but won't be too difficult if you've taken AP Chem before. Make sure to check your grades online right after she posts them though - she switched my grades twice with another student's, one of which was the final, and I would've gotten at least a whole letter grade lower if I didn't catch it in time
I took Dr. Todd for both 1601 and 1602 and I cannot complain about her lectures. Clean, well-practiced. Her lectures will prepare you for whatever comes up on the test, as she is typically the prof who writes the hardest questions. Attending lecture also important because sometimes dumb little fluff questions appear on tests about demos in class.
Dr. Todd is a great professor, but be prepared to eat, breath, and sleep chem. Her lectures are amazing, and she has a fair amount of sass which helps keep you awake at 8 am (because she mainly only teaches 8 ams). Take Dr. Todd over the other gen chem professors.
If you can drag yourself out of bed at 8 am, TAKE TODD. She is the best Gen Chem prof by far. She posts fill-in-the-blank notes online which have everything you need for the test. Her lectures are incredibly clear and helpful. Concepts I didn't understand in high school Chem somehow got easier in college. She's also hilarious and super accessible.
I took Professor Todd for my first year writing seminar. The class was definitely very interesting, and it wasn't too hard to do well. Make sure to keep up on the readings and definitely put effort into your writing. If you are a science-oriented student like me, I would definitely recommend her writing seminar.
Todd's Gen. Chem being an 8AM will likely scare most, but her lectures and provided resources are well worth it unless you really like your sleep. Solid lectures and provided notes/practice problems/review guides will help you do better in a difficult introductory course than you might have otherwise.
Gen chem is not fun. However, Todd can make it seem manageable. Her lectures are clear, she provides special notes that the other professors dont, and shes got a great dry humor. BUT it can be EXTREMELY difficult to get out of bed before 8 a.m. I thought it would be easy since I did it in high school but seriously, BEWARE! Great professor though.
This class is known for being pretty difficult, and it definitely hurts most people's GPAs. Despite the fact that I always went to class and studied hard, I didn't do well in the class; however, Todd makes this painful class fairly enjoyable. She is very funny and knows what she's talking about.
Dr. Todd is a really crabby professor. The only reason I'm doing well in this class is because the book is extremely clear. I'm amazed people rate her so highly because everyone I know thinks she's terrible. She's mean, unreceptive to students, and definitely not the best professor for this class. Don't waste your time taking her.
The 8 AM is hard to get up for but definitely worth it. Dr. Todd has a dry sense of humor, and she providesfill-in-the-blank notes for her lectures (I never needed the book). She has a lot of clicker questions that can boost your grade, which is important because the tests are hard. All profs. use the same exams though and she'll prepare you well.
Tara Todd is a great woman. She is sassy in class, so if you can't handle that then definitely do not take her. She can appear not to care, but if you show up to her office hours and put in the work it is reasonable to get an A
not worth taking chemistry at 8am with a professor with such a disregard for her student's feelings and such a general salt for life. Extremely difficult class. If you need it for your major, then go for it, but if not it's definitely a class to avoid.
Gen Chem is a very hard course to begin with, but Todd is an amazing professor. She explains things very clearly and really makes sure that we understand the material. She is also very accessible outside class, and will answer any questions you have. Definitely try to take Todd if you have to take gen chem.
Todd is a solid choice for gen chem. She gives fill in lecture notes that are helpful, and she is clear and honest about class expectations. However, the other chem professors are just as good. I don't think taking an 8 am is worth it, when Todd really isn't any better than the other professors. You won't go wrong with Todd, though.
all sections take same tests. tests require critical thinking and application over memorization but pay attention in lecture, read the book, do mastering chem and you should get at least a B on any one exam. Extra credit can boost grade a max of 4 %. Decent lecturer, however, if your not a morning person an 8 am is never worth it
If you're taking gen chem, she is the professor to take it with! She posts slotted notes ahead of the lectures, so you can focus more on understanding and less on scribbling everything down. She can be really sassy to the class, but she knows the material well. The tests are really difficult, but they're the same across all sections.
Todd is hard to predict during lectures: sometimes they are interesting and interactive, and other times she comes to class in a bad mood and it shows. Tests are very difficult in order to make a bell curve, so a lot of students study a ton and still make mediocre grades.
Best chem Professor. Definitely work the 8am as long as youre a morning person or can get coffee beforehand. Highly recommend if you dont want to read the textbook and rather learn from lecture
One of the best chem lecturers with her fill in the blank notes that are very specific and helpful. Tests are difficult but uniform across all sections.
Chem1601 in general is a tough class, and Todd has a rep for being the best teacher; however I don't think she is much better than like Phillips. Plus the 8 AM is NOT worth it. I always considered myself a morning person, but it is SO much worse here.
If you're a low-income premed, the chem department is here to weed you out! Good luck. Chemistry at Vanderbilt is way harder than it needs to be but Todd is your best bet. She isn't a very pleasant person, however.
Chem 1601 is a difficult class, even if you have previous chemistry experience. Dr. Todd's lectures were pretty good and her office hours were very helpful. I think Dr. Todd really cares about her students doing well, and if you make every effort to do excel in the class, you can do very well.
Her notes are very helpful and she goes through concepts and problems with great clarity. She prepares you well for the exam. 8am is quite difficult though.
Take Todd, you won't regret it. Her lectures are clear, concise, and contain all of the information you need on the test. She's accessible outside of class and genuinely cares about her students. Some kids do poorly because they reteach themselves the material outside of class, but if you PAY ATTENTION in lecture and use her notes, you'll be fine.
Tara Todd was the best professor I had freshman year of college. Her lectures are very clear and fairly paced, she knows what students will have questions on before they even have to ask, and lectures stay interesting with her sarcastic charm. She's very helpful inside and outside of class, and genuinely wants you to do well.
Dr. Todd is a good lecturer and gives good fill in the blank notes. The class just overall is hard. Warning: she can be cranky sometimes.
Tara knows she is teaching a brutally hard class (for those without a ton of chem background) and she teaches as such. Her lectures are packed with info and she cares deeply about her students - just go to office hours and see. Shes also pretty funny! Getting a B or higher in this class requires real sweat, an A required some tears or prior chem.
Dr. Todd is a very fluent lecturer; that is, she knows her chemistry and can explain things very well. CHEM 1601 is real hard tests are hard and ALEKS (online homework) takes so much time to do. Dr. Todd in class is often also rude to her students in class, which is a big turn off at times because the course is already so difficult. Safe choice.
Dr. Todd's notes were extremely helpful, emphasizing all the tricks seen on the exams. Very good choice for gen chem!
Gen chem will suck no mater what, but Dr. Todd at least gives notes sheets to help you stay focused. She has very little patience and can sometimes take out her annoyance on her students, but at least she lectures well. Her sarcasm is also hilarious as long as she's in a good mood. Of the chem professors, would recommend her.
Gen chem is difficult by nature, but Dr. Todd really wants you to understand the material. I wish I had gone to office hours more earlier on, but building a relationship with her (especially if you're doing anything more in chemistry) is worth it. Go to class for TopHat extra credit and lectures, and her outlines were extremely helpful.
Professor Todd is great in lecture and her class as a whole is manageable. If you have some AP chem background and study well, you will do fine. This is a difficult class if you are deficient in a chemistry background or don't try. Other than that, it is very manageable.
I had Todd for both 1601 and 1602 and she's a great professor, definitely recommend her. Going to her office hours makes this class so much easier.
You basically have to use her notes if you want to take notes during lectures but her lectures are helpful in providing good information for tests that the textbook wouldn't have. She does tophat relatively frequently either at the beginning or end of class so be there! She's pretty clear on what to expect for midterms.
I love her!!! Gen chem this year has become a lot better than before. Our averages were 20 points higher than the previous year. Todd made this class even better by giving amazing and clear lectures and also all the possible resources to help you succeed. Definitely take her if you can!!
If you take genchem, you must take Todd. She posts lecture ppts and fill-in-the-blank notes. Many reviews warn about her being rude/moody, but I would say shes exceptionally patient given how agitating a noisy group of 250 freshman can be. She is incredibly understanding in office hours. I couldn't recommend a more knowledgable or caring prof.
Dr. Todd is a very knowledgable lecturer. The tests and final are extremely difficult and it's nearly impossible to get an A without prior experience/many tears. Her lecture notes posted online were very helpful for me and I believe that she is the best choice for gen chem, even though she's not the most pleasant during lectures.
Absolutely the best. She's a great person and great at explaining things and answering questions. Print out her guided notes before the lecture, so helpful. Loved this class so much I took her again for 1602.
Amazing Lecturer. Provides the best notes. Tests are hard. Aleks takes forever.
Dr. Todd is a very knowledgable and organized professor, and she provides the best notes; however, I never felt comfortable asking questions during the lectures due to the highly condescending attitude she has towards the students. General Chemistry is a difficult class, and she does almost nothing to provide comfort and support for the students.
Has no sympathy for students when it came to administering tests online. She prepared us for "MCAT, GMAT, LSAT, or GRE" when some of us will never take those, and her definition of "preparing" us for those was to make sure partial credit would not be given and there was no going back on the questions to double check. Good lecturer.
Todd is best option for both Gen Chem 1 and 2. The class will still be very tough, but her fill-in-the blank notes are absolute gem. Follow along the notes during her lecture and study them for exams. Do all the cumulative problems in the textbook, as similar problems often show up on exams.
I took gen chem both semesters with Dr. Todd (2018/2019). I would definitely recommend her. My advice is to do all recommended problems, recopy your notes, go to office hours (seriously, go!), and never skip class. Be persistent and you'll be okay! I took non-AP chem freshman year of HS and I was fineyou will be too. Good luck! :)
Honestly does not know the content that well and I don't believe she is qualified to teach the course. It was online so all the lecture videos were pre-recorded and there are blatant errors in multiple videos, directly contradicting the textbook. Good at gen chem but sucks at ochem. Only got an A bc of independent studying, she just doesn't teach
*This is the only chemistry class I've ever taken* Am getting ready to graduate, and this was one of the hardest classes I took at this school.
Hardest class ever. If you take Todd, your odds of passing are way higher tho. She is knowledgable, caring, and offers extra credit. Office hours are great, definitely go to those. Take her if at all possible. Her classes fill up within minutes, so act fast if you want to pass. Good luck!!!
CHEM 1601 is far and away the hardest class Ive ever taken. Frankly, I think I would have failed had I gotten any other prof. Todd is heard to be mean and bitter, but I found her quite the opposite. Dry humor but very funny and truly wants her students to succeed. Be quick tho because her class fills up IMMEDIATELY (for good reason!)
Dr. Todd is excellent! Gen chem is difficult, but her detailed lectures, fill-in-the-blank notes, and recommended practice problems definitely made the class more manageable. The 8am class time was not ideal, but worth it. Her dry humor kept class time entertaining. Looking forward to having her again in the spring for the second half of gen chem.
Dr. Todd knows what she's teaching. Go to office hours if you're struggling and do the practice problems even though they are optional. The material is difficult if you haven't taken AP Chem so stay on top of things and ask questions as they come up. The exams often have challenging problems that'll force you to incorporate several concepts.
I am confused as to why SHE is highly rated. Her NOTES are the real secret sauce to surviving chemistry. However, she tends to be unresponsive to emails or outside contact. The tests are also designed to ensure grades lower than A's with one MC weighed as much as 3 points. Also a 93 may not be an A. It could be a 94 or 95... use her notes though!
Dr. Todd is the best choice for Gen Chem. Her lecture style is not my favorite, because they are pre-recorded and you are expected to watch them before class so that class is more of an office hours style. However, her fill-in-the-blank notes are extremely helpful. Exams are brutal - be prepared to have no life the week of each exam.
Dr. Todd is your best chance to do well in gen chem, esp if you don't have much chem experience. I had a different professor last semester and was lost, but with Todd's prerecorded lecture style and notes it's easy to understand the material. I actually felt confident most of the time. Tests are pretty hard but do all the practice problems
Dr. Todd is the best! Her lectures and notes are amazing, and she is one of the most caring professors. She offered 3 or 4 different options for office hours throughout the week and was always willing to explain a concept again to help you understand. Make sure to do all the practice problems & notes and definitely go to office hours!!
Probably one of the best professors you could ever ask for. She is extremely caring & flexible with office hours to accommodate for students. Genuinely wants her students to do well and provides amazing lectures. Her sarcasm also kept the class entertaining at 8am. Gen chem is tough, but do the practice problems, go to office hours, you'll be fine
If you have the chance to take Dr. Todd, do it. Her dry humor makes 8am class manageable and she cares so much about her students. She checked in on me after exams since she knew I got anxious, her fill-in-the-blank notes are a godsend, and she is such a good lecturer. She is your best bet at passing/doing well in chem. We all love Dr. Todd!
Dr. Todd has an interesting personality. She's usually somewhat nice, but she can be extremely mean to students at the drop of a hat. She teaches the material alright, but I actually didn't find her notes very useful. If you didn't take AP Chem, don't worry about it! Just complete the suggested problems and DON'T BE LATE TO CLASS (seriously)!
I loved Dr. Todd, but hated 8 A.M.! If you can wake up early and stay consistent, I highly suggest taking her course. However, if you're like me and snooze your alarm... do not take this course because you do not want to show up late (she will get upset!). Her fill-in-the-blank notes are amazing!!!
If you can wake up before 8, Dr.T odd is a very good choice for General Chemistry. Sometimes she does come off as a bit cold, but that's just how she is. Very good at explaining concepts, and her lecture notes and slides are a very good asset. Show up to class, do extra practice problems and homework, and you'll be alright!
Out of all the GenChem professors, Dr. Todd is definitely the best! She provides fill-in notes so you can focus more on her lecture than scribbling down all the info. Vandy GenChem is going to be hard no matter what, but Dr. Todd prepared you well for the exams. I wish I wouldve done more practice problems from the book, so keep that in mind!
As someone who had Tainter for 1601 and Todd for 1602, both professors are pretty much the same. The difference is that Todd's class is at 8am which will be a heavy drag toward the end of the semester. Anyway, Todd is great at lecturing and preps you well for the exams. the rest pretty much relies on you and your work ethic. A solid choice for 1602
I think Todd is overhyped. She is very communicative about things like office hours and opportunities, but I wouldn't say she's better or you'd have an edge over her compared to other teachers.
Honestly, did not love her. Her notes are really helpful and she is really great about having review sessions outside of class (open to students in other classes too!!) and accessible office hours. That being said, she is not really worth the 8am and can be very rude and demeaning which is extremely annoying early in the morning.
Very much overhyped as a lecturer. She does not explain many concepts well. She is also the rudest professor I have had by far.
Very overhyped. She can be very rude and is definitely not worth the 8 am. Gen chem is going to be hard regardless of the professor, so save yourself from waking up early and take Tainter instead.
One of my all-time favorite professors! I wish I could take more classes with Dr. Todd! She is one of the most caring professors I have ever had, and she is always so helpful inside and outside of class! Make sure to go to office hours!!
every gen chem class is brutal and they are definitely trying to weed people out... that being said, todd seems to teach the most focused on what is going to be tested on. If you are okay waking up early (its brutal) you should take her. To do well you should go to class and very carefully read the textbook but exams are gonna be hard regardless
unresponsive to emails, condescending towards questions, not as good as I was hoping. the Todd on this rate my professor was not the Todd in lecture. Had a final exam on a Saturday at 7pm and when people didn't do very well on it her advice was "take this as a lesson". Just a bad excuse to let kids fail. Very regretful of her
Going from another professor to Todd was a night and day difference. Todd is the best Gen Chem lecturer! Her lecture notes are detailed and useful and I used them to study for the conceptual questions on the exams. She may be rude at times, but if you can ignore it, it is totally worth it. I went from a C to a B+ because of her. Take her if you can
Prof Todd is the best gen chem professor of them all. She focuses on what is tested, gives lots of reviews, and is pretty funny (some people consider her rude but I think it's funny). I had a different professor for 1601 and there was a night and day difference between the two. The only downfall is that her class is at 8 am.
I think that Todd is a good professor but CHEM 1601 as a course is very difficult, especially if you did not take AP Chem and even so, it still is. I think she and Tainter are equally good professors, nothing makes one better than other. I would say lectures do not elaborate well on material that is on test. Please review before semester begins
honestly would rather take tainter than todd. tainter has good slides that u can fill in but todd's slides aren't as good and her notesheets really aren't that useful because she goes by so fast that u wont be able to keep up filling in her notesheets. her slides have missing info and require u to read the textbook or watch videos which is annoying
Gen Chem is a very difficult class especially if you have not taken AP chem. I found her class to be worth the 8am. I would recommend going to office hours, she is very accessible and is looking to help you. She cares about her students in and out of the classroom and was very supportive of me during my first semester in college.
i hate gen chem
Professor Todd is a pretty good chem professor, but there's only so much she can do in her class time. She has in-class practice, offers review sessions, so it's not hard to find help for the course. However, it's obviously gen chem so it's a tough class, but she gives you all the tools you need to succeed.
everyone on here said todd was worth the 8 am... she was DEF not. not only was i extremely sleep deprived, but the exams were also super stressful and hard. you really have to learn how to STUDY outside of the class for this course. the third midterm avg was in the high 60s yet no curve, and no easier final. good luck
Todd is the most amazing chem professor. She is extremely caring (and sassy) and wants you to do well. Study a little bit of material every day and go to office hours and you will do fine. The class is very difficult, but there are so many resources to utilize!
cares way too much about getting students in trouble and is always irritated. makes attendance so incredibly annoying by requiring you to submit in-class questions and to submit pictures of your work separately but she always makes them close in the middle of class before everyone submits them and it's always a whole ordeal to just get your credit
Take another chem prof. She is extremely rude, sassy, and will go on tangents in office hours instead of helping. She has an ego unlike any other professor. She is unresponsive to emails and will not help. Good luck because no matter how much studying you do, she'll make the test impossible. The questions are not similar to class problems.
Professor Todd's class was one of my favorites (I'm a chemical engineer and chemistry major). Although she could be condescending sometimes, she cares for her students and makes an effort to converse outside and inside of class. I would take her for Gen Chem if you're an upcoming freshman.
Definitely the best gen chem professor. Although the class was challenging, you will be fine if you utilize office hours and do the recommended problems. Though she may seem intimidating and rude initially, she is extremely caring and helpful if you go to office hours and wants you to succeed. Take her if you are an incoming freshman!!!
Todd is a gem at Vandy. Her lectures are helpful, and she has guided notes if you want them. Office hours are always helpful and she really cares about student learning and success. Take her class if you can!
Best gen chem prof by far--hilarious, good lectures, accessible outside of class; no matter who you take, exams will be the same and fairly difficult for most; study daily, do your Aktiv assignments ahead of time, don't skip class, do the questions at the end of chapters in the textbook, and good luck!
chem 2 was harder for me than chem 1; todd is the best gen chem prof though, so I recommend her over anyone else; very funny and knowledgeable, go to class and do your homework and you'll be fine
Take Professor Todd if you can. She writes the exams and her lectures are most similar to the exam content. She makes concepts easier to understand and although she can come off as a bit rude, she is still an amazing professor. Definitely go to class and read the textbook.
The course is unnecessary difficult. If you want to get a high GPA, try your best to avoid this course. Her PPT is confused. You can do review through her PPT. She teaches too fast and rarely highlight important points. She's not worth getting up early for.
Chem 1601 is a very hard class but Todd made it easier. She is very accessible outside of class and can explain concepts in multiple different ways until you understand it. She really cares about her students. I also found her lectures to be pretty enjoyable.
Gen Chem is a tough course but Dr. Todd made the experience not as horrible. Her lectures were dense but very informative and were useful in reviewing for midterms. You have to stay very on top of the online homework assignments. In-class questions and coffee chats provided extra credit that helps give your grade a buffer.
Dr. Todd is a must for gen chem! Her lectures are very well organized and the group work in class is great practice. She is very accessible outside of class and wants to help students succeed. She also writes the exams and provides extra study materials for her students only. Having Dr. Todd as a professor was so worth the 8am!
If you can get past her sense of humour and sass you should definitely be taking her class for gen chem! (Personally I thought she was hilarious) Although 8 am sounds terrible, you will truly benefit from her class as she writes all the exams and is an excellent teacher. Attendance is SO mandatory or you'll miss graded in-class questions.
Coming from no chem experience, I was so nervous for Gen Chem but Dr. Todd and her class were amazing! She's got a lot of personality but really explains concepts well. Dr. Todd is the most organized gen chem professor and her section has the most incredible learning assistants who really help you individually. Could not recommend her more!
Dr. Todd is a great professor. She knows how to teach the course content effectively to students and gives hard example problems in class to prepare students for the exam. For the top hat extra credit, make sure to read the group work as soon as possible. The professor may appear strict, but in reality, Dr. Todd cares about her students.
People love to overrate the difficulty of Gen Chem. Many people do not study enough and blame Dr. Todd. While there is a lot of material, the tests are very straight forward, and you just need to study. All of the test material is given to you in the form of slides and textbook. Do NOT freak out. Just study and you will do great.
Gen Chem 2 is not easier than Gen Chem 1, so don't be fooled, but Dr. Todd is hands down the best professor for chem. She is thoughtful, caring, and provides her students with the most support and resources compared to other professors. Taking an 8am isn't easy, but Dr. Todd is 100% worth it. If you're unsure which professor to take, just take Todd
Gen Chem is hard for anyone, but Todd made it genuinely bearable. Lectures were dense but useful when reviewing for exams. Stay on top of Aktiv hw and attend class (even though the 8am is tough, it's worth it). In-class TopHat & LA coffee chats give grade buffer points at end of sem. She's really nice once you get to know her (attend office hours!)
Gen Chem is challenging, but Professor Todd makes it bearable. Attend class, do the Aktiv homework, and utilize unstuck ai for extra study prep - it's a game-changer alongside the textbook. She's tough but fair, and genuinely cares about student success.
Tara Todd is the reincarnation of true evil. She is condescending and have daily meltdowns. The gen chem department is the reason I went to the Vanderbilt psychiatric hospital for a week btw. The department is incredibly toxic and these professors take pride in that (genuinely who tf finds pride in that???)
The class is unnecessary difficult. do not take this class.
Dr. Todd was a great professor. Yes, Gen Chem is hell, but she is the best professor you are gonna get. She is very helpful at office hours (don't be intimidated to attend), and although she can be harsh, she does so to maintain respect. Her expectations and demands are clear and reasonable, and she is actually quite funny and nice.
Dr. Todd is a great lecturer and explains concepts really well. Sometimes, the lectures were slower paced, so we would end up cramming many slides to keep up with the other professors. Tests are difficult, so practice a lot from the textbook and aktiv. Coming from non-morning person, the 8am is not worth it, Tainter is a great professor as well.
Todd is probably the best professor in the gen chem department, however gen chem is just an extremely difficult class. Only Todd and one other professor have LAs in class and Todd offers extra credit through weekly chem coffee chats. The thing is, she did have some like random meltdowns / freakouts? It was a bit off putting ...
Tara Todd constantly has meltdowns during lectures and will hold back material based on the way she feels. At times, I would fear going to class because of the sheer emotions. Her lectures were alright but nothing compared to Tainter or Daniels, try to avoid her (and gen chem) at all costs.
Look, Gen Chem is designed to be a weed out class and as such, it's a very hard class. However, I really only have good things to say about Professor Todd. Her lectures and slides were incredibly helpful (even though she did have a couple meltdowns during class) and she is a very kind professor.
Professor Todd teaches a hard class as well as anyone realistically can but here classes became harder and harder to handle throughout the year. On many occasions toward the end of the year she skipped content or review and stormed out of class early. She makes helpful materials available. She sometimes came off as abrasive during office hours.
Ez material at first - gets way harder over time. Lectures & slides were confusing during tough material. Todd would jump back and forth, leave stuff incomplete, and sometimes just not explain things making it hard to take notes. My advice, READ THE TEXTBOOK FOR EVERY CHAPTER BEFORE THE EXAM, GO THRU OTHER PROFESSOR'S SLIDES (Tainter!), AND STUDY!!
I decided to tank the 7 AM wakeup to take Professor Todd over other chemistry professors. This proved to be a grave mistake. She often skipped lecture material during class, blatantly called out students for asking dumb questions, and had meltdowns which caused her to storm out of class early. Caused a very hostile learning environment for me.
CHEM1601 is a weed-out class and it is taught like one. It is difficult but doable. Dr. Todd is cut-throat and curt. However, it's worth it to take Dr. Todd if you are taking 1601 as she gives the most resources, has good lecture slides that are given for notetaking, and provides more opportunities of extra credit than the other professors.
She's a good professor and provides so many materials and opportunities to do well in this class. She is hands down one of the best chemistry professors to take for CHEM1601. If she is an 8 am, however, I would recommend Daniels or even Tainter as well since an 8 am chemistry class can be rough.
As a person who took IB Chem HL, this class was easy. Most content I've learned, the ones I haven't were extensions of IB concepts. The textbook is technically all you need, but Todd has these bonus attendance TopHat questions you want to be in-class for. Good slides, uploads optional questions. Aktiv questions forces you to not cram.
Oh what to say about Dr Todd. She is quite helpful in office hours, but as far as her lectures are concerned, they are loosely related to the content that appeared on the exams this semester, and left most students quite underprepared. She also randomly crashed out and leaves the room so that's fun.
Everybody gases gen chem up for being the hardest class ever. It simply is not, and Tara Todd is a really good professor. If you read the tophat textbook as she teaches her lectures are extremely clear and she posts SO many resources for you to learn and practice. Suggested problems, past exams, and great notes. She is quite sassy, but worth it!!!
Todd was pretty great. She can be a little mean or rude at times but she also goes the extra mile for students that care. Go to class, read the textbook, do all the problem sets, and you'll do well. I think half the problem with gen chem is that it's a freshman class and we all just need to adjust.
gen chem is always going to be impossible but dr. todd made it somewhat manageable. she can be veryyyy passive aggressive at times (especially if you corner her with too many questions or move around during her lectures?) but she's not a bad professor whatsoever. the LA system she has is super helpful. i personally prefer tainter but todd isnt bad.
Gen chem is very difficult + exams are the same but Todd knows her stuff and is organized. She has an attitude and will be kinda hostile but her slides are good. Has LAs and coffee chats to get extra help and posts extra resources/review. Top hats in class are very fast/ hard to get points. I would personally prefer Tainter but Todd is a close 2nd.
Dr. Todd is an amazing lecturer. The contents are heavy, but she tries to go above and beyond to ensure everyone understands the material. Read the textbook, complete the assignments, and attend her office hours. The pacing is challenging at the beginning, but Dr. Todd will support you learn the content through worksheets, videos, etc. Great class!
Chem in general is difficult but Todd is a good professor. She is organized and offers the most resources for students to succeed. She is also genuinely caring about her students but can feel very passive aggressive at times when she gets mad and starts yelling at the class or during office hours. Do as many practice problems as you can!
Tara Todd was an excellent teacher, the one everyone told you to get. Well, she went on a villain arc and now makes you watch every lecture before class in videos and answer quizzes, and doesn't teach you things that are as relevant as just reading the textbook. She is short and rude. Do yourself a favor, and take tainter.
She is a decent-ish teacher. Has a temper and will walk out on your class. Minor inconsistencies in how well she pulls off flipped classroom.
Dr. Todd switched to flipped Gen Chem 1 for the first time this semester, which can be challenging, but if you put in the work, you'll do great. She's clear about exam expectations, super accessible, and offers tons of support—all her videos and slides, multiple office hours, quick email replies. Complaints come from those not trying. 5/5 prof.
Todd teaches with a flipped classroom style, meaning you have about an hour and a half of lecture videos to watch before every class. However, this means you'll spend the whole class period doing problems with LA's supporting you which really helps cement your understanding. It's essentially double the practice, so I think its definitely worth it.
great but I don't want to take it again.
Since it's a flipped classroom, be prepared to spend at least an hour on lecture notes outside of class. Very obnoxious initially but once you get used to it you realize that it's lowkey more beneficial, especially since lecture time is used for practice worksheets with LAs. She provides lots of resources compared to some other professors.
Flipped classroom style, so be prepared for in class graded assignments and online lectures to watch for HW. Lots of HW and practice problems, but it prepares you well for the exam.
Lots of people complain about Todd and her flipped class method, but as I got used to her, I found it really helpful. While sometimes there were 2 hours worth of videos, I liked being able to practice in class, and that's why I did so well overall. She wants you to succeed, so if you put in the time to practice, it is very achievable to get an A.
Bro don't do her 8am! She is doing a flipped classroom so she post a crazy amount of lecture videos for you to watch outside of class and they are due at 9pm. She does not teach in class and she is insanely passive aggressive. You can participate in class, go to office hours, and she still makes you feel stupid and is plain rude to you!
Dr. Todd is amazing! She uses a flipped classroom style and even though the videos can be up to 2 hours sometimes, it really pays off. During class you work on practice problems the entire time with some lecturing here and there, but I found it really valuable to have practice every lecture and it really helped for exams and studying.
Dr. Todd, while always meaning well and being extremely helpful in office hours, teaches in a flipped classroom style and does not lecture, meaning you will be watching hours of videos every night to learn content.
