he assumes every student is at his level
terrible tests terrible at giving instructions
No Comments
didn't learn a damn thing relating to the course.
Very theoretical, but knows his stuff. tests are great.
nice guy but very confusing just read the text and hope for the best
Great guy but he is way too smart to be teaching at a 100-level. He assumes that you know what he is talking about, and of course you have no idea. I feel bad giving him a bad review because he is so nice but he needs to be out looking at rocks instead
Nice enough guy, but the worst teacher I have ever had. If you want to go on to Chem 121, DO NOT TAKE TARK'S CLASS!!! You will not learn a damn thing!
poor organization and notes. I have learnt nothing in his course!
This guy is the worst professor I've ever had. Try to avoid his classes.Nice guy but has no business teaching. His test questions don't even follow the text book!I recommend not to take this class with Tark!
The only thing I've learned in this class is that he still doesn't know my name. Your better off reading the textbook and just showing up for labs. He's nice..but way to technical.
Don't waste your time, taking this class from this particular Prof!! You can learn more at home on Discovery Channel....
Extremely smart man, does not know how to teach. !0minutes late every day (for a 50 minute class)DOnt bother buying your text book, he doesnt use it..Hes had numerous complaints filed, why hes teachign is a mystery! Mr. Allen ROCKS
ratings for this prof are totally off... he is such a nice guy and he tries to help you do well in his class, even on tests if you get stuck he starts teaching you. he knows what he is talking about, and class can be fun sometimes. great prof
well I think everyone else said pretty much what i had to say...The equivalent of taking his class would be to buy the text and do the work, Save yourself the $300 worth of lecture time. Subtracting of course, the 5-10 minutes of lateness EVERYDAY!!!
I still think that his jokes aren't funny (actually crued) his style of teaching is ineffective, and I wouldn't feel comfortable with seeking extra help with him.
I was disapointed in the students comments. I though Tark was an awesome teacher! Throughout my class, he was always on time, organized and he seems to have such a passion for the course (something many teachers lack). I would highly recommend him!
He marks on a curve I got a B+. Whole class failed the first test. I have a geologist friend who knows him says tarks the best in the field, but even he can't understand 1/2 the things the guys says. He would be better for a 4th year student then a first.
i think every has already said wht i have to say, but one thing is he is easy going guy. bad point doest teach anything which is worth something in the class....be prepared to do the course on ur own.....i think u know who to choose as teacher now!!
What to say. Didn't get our midterm marks back until the course was over. Always late. Goes off on tangents. Term paper due in early March-marked by late april. Take at your own risk
Had him last year, poor guy got in trouble for all the studients complaints, all you have to do is show an interest in the topic to do well, he is always happy to spend extra time clarifying things or discussing topics, do the work and u'll be rewarded
Tark is a nice guy, he's not uptight or conservative by any means. He makes clear study guides and grades on an curve. He doesn't really instruct in any formal manner but he gets the point across. I'd rather listen to him than read a damn textbook!
Three words of advice...take with Allan! Super nice guy, but he is ALWAYS late, takes forever to mark anything, and his tests are stupidly hard considering he teaches you nothing through his ramblings! He forgets its 100 level!!
Very unclear exams, but when class average is way down he does come up with ways to boost up grades, I should have gotten a C+ but wound up with an A-
i found tark to be an excellent teacher, particularly if you showed interest in the course.he was very patient in explaining things that were unclear, and always was available for extra help!his style is to challenge you,so don't take him if you want to be spoon fed.
You have to listen to Tark; sift through what he is teaching you, and ask him a "TON" of questions....The guy is the GURU of Chem and Geology. If your grade is low ask him what you are doing wrong, and he'll tell you!!! Even if it hurts: Kilts-a-go-go-baby-yeah!
I can understand the complaints against Tark; however, his helpfullness, and passion for geology is unmached. I did not find it hard to understand his concepts, all you have to do is listen to what he has to say and if you dont get it ask or read your text and you will do fine.
I can understand some of the comments below, but I have to say it is nice to see a teacher that actually has passion!!!He is always trying to give you something to make it more interesting. His clarity sometimes is lacking but if you work hard then anyone can do fine in his class!
Really hard to understand. Rambles on about stuff we don't need to know all class. You only need to go to the labs and tests, it's not worth going to his lectures, they're just confusing. The textbook will save you from failing so be prepared to teach it to yourself.
There is more to be had from every lecture, stick around after class for the good stuff, or see him in his office. He knows what seems to be everything about this subject, so just try and stump him. He has high expectations, his course is not easy. But he makes this subjuct thrilling. Thanks Tark
Tark is awesome, he can be quite unclear sometimes so just ask alot of questions. He's always willing to help and he'll often give you the answers to your labs - which by the way are easy marks if you do the work. An A was not too difficult in this class, but i can see why the slackers wouldnt do well.
kinda hard to follow, but he will do ANYTHING to help you get a good mark in the class! Helps tons with labs, exam prep, etc. Not that I recommend this, but I handed in some labs really late, and he would still help me complete them by staying after class...all in all nice guy!

Got me to enjoy chemistry and succeed in organic. Border line insane due to being brilliant. Go to class to learn intersting knoledge about chemistry and how it pertains to life. Typical University proff though, lots of outside work, A's are very possible, but he doesn't spoon feed you
He is unorganized and is hard to understand. He is not very approachable and seems to teach at a level that is beyond most students. His tests are poorly reviewed in class and hard to write, his lectures are difficult to follow and lack any form of orgainization.
Oh my god! why is this guy a teacher???? Worst teacher ever. He's very smart but does not teach well. He's all over the place! He should never teach chem. Over half our class is was failing his tests. Pathetic!!!!!
Tark is the man, this is college people, you don't get spoon fed anymore. Do the work and pay attention and you will understand everything he says. He is always willing to help and is a pretty easy marker on labs as long as you show that you get whats going on (its first year chem...its not that hard).
He marks on a curve, easy to get a good grade. He has a great sense of humor. He has a different style of teaching...not spoon fed but in the end you know the material.Ask questions in class...it helps and read your textbook on your own in order to keep up.
He is way to meatophoric never directly answers the question grades you on a curvre so you walk out with a great mark but no knowledge
The only reason his class was easy, is because he has no choice but to grade on a curve, since most of the students in his classes never seem to pass. He does not know how to teach. The only way I learned was through reading the text, and not attending his lectures. I had him for several classes, and after the first one, the rest were not by choice
One of the most inspiring teachers I've ever had. Loves geology, wants to get students psyched about it. That is why he teaches at a community college. Metaphorical at times, but makes it interesting and keeps you on your toes. Tark is eccentric, enjoyable, and has a encyclopedic knowledge of pretty much everything. Read the text, go to class.
AHHHH horrible teacher. The whole class just sits there shaking their heads cause we have no idea what he's talking about or whats going on.
I don't mind a tougher teacher if I am learning something, but the only thing I learn in this class is that I should've taken a different teacher. He is very confusing.

Tark's a nice guy, and he's passionate about what he's teaching, but he's not a very good teacher. His lectures seem to be directed towards students at a much higher level and it's very hard to follow. He does mark on the curve though so most students do okay in the course.
His teaching is great. I see a lot of people saying he's too hard. Then study more, it's that simple. You by a text book, read it, go to class, listen, take notes and study. His analogies are hilarious and he makes learning the subject that much more interesting. I'd take more with him if I could, he's great.
Amazing prof, knows what he's talking about, although kind of crazy in a good way sometimes.
I've taken 2 of his geology courses, and understand others' comments, good and bad. My view is positive since he's a dedicated teacher, honours his students differences, and is outright brilliant with the subject matter. Geology itself is complex and messy, and the coursework -as it should- reflects this. Show interest, effort and all will be well.
Awesome. One of the best teachers I have ever had. That is all.
Great prof who cares about the students!
One of the best profs I've ever had. Very funny and engaging. Very fair with tests and labs. A lot of material but if you study the notes, go to class and read the textbook and you will have no problem. Very helpful guy who cares about the students!
My favorite teacher of 3 years of college. Fair, funny, interesting material and personality. Speaks his mind.
Super interesting and intelligent man. Very passionate about geology, but may confuse you at times. If he sees your effort,he will give you a good grade.Felt like I was lost at times, but I did learn very much.Very encouraging when your feeling lost. Tells great stories of his geology adventures and may even sing you a song!
Amazing prof! one of the best teachers i've ever had. incredibly interesting and passionate, his love for geology is genuinely passed on to his students. great fieldtrips to the beach and random guitar solos throughout his lectures. easily irritated by those who do not pay attention or do the work, do the hw and go to lecture you'll be fine
You do horrible on all the tests and still come out with an A+!! I had no clue what was going on this whole class but if Tark sees your effort, he'll reward it. Allows cheat sheets on all tests and final exams and awards bonus marks like no other! Highly reccomended if you wanna boost your GPA.
One of my favourite proffessors ever. The guy is as rare as they get. Quite the character, but freaking brilliant and halarious. The man has lived such a life. Yes he has a million tangents but if you pay attention and aren't a slacker you will do fine on the theory and learn some stuff thats real world too. A+ for Tark, without question.
Outstanding prof. Very passionate for the subject and always willing to spend extra time to help. He's not going to just hand you the mark but if you put in the effort he will reward you. He doesn't just test that you can remember charts and tables, he expects you to use the information to analyze.,
What an awesome professor. He has a passion for rocks which is evident in all his lectures. He teaches at a high level, but tests at an average level. Great handouts study guides, and field trips. Attend the lectures, participate, do your labs and you'll have a great time.
I loved this class! Such a one of a kind prof! I knew nothing about geology going into it, but left with a pretty good understanding. Not hard to get an A+, just put in the effort and pay attention. ALL about the cheat sheet and bonus marks! Also a pretty fun banjo performance late in the term! Great Prof, really knows his stuff
Tark is AMAZING. He is passionate about Geology and is a great teacher. Take his class! (and finish all your labs!) You won't regret it.
Labs are extremely long and more difficult than expected. The course is interesting and Tark is hilarious. I would recommend that you have taken some maths and chemistry before enrolling in this class. Teaches at a high level. Challenging.
Tark was the BEST! I had no interest in going into Geology before meeting tark... Im a geologist now, with a great job. I still pop by his class to say hi! Take his class, yes its hard, labs are long, but he wants you to succeed!
If you show up and take notes you should do fine. Ask for clarification if you need it and do the readings previous to the lecture- must! Also you get a cheat sheet in each test & final so use it to fill in the diagrams from the book which is a must have in this class. Tark is a field scientist so wear your big boy pants in regards to his phrases.
Awesome class for first year! Must attend all labs... lectures aren't that important... allowing us to have cheat sheeets are great!
It is clear that Tark loves geology and clearly knows what he is talking about, but when asking for help you never get a clear answer and he often rants about something random and off topic. he is a guys teacher and often uses rude jokes to portray ideas which can be inappropriate to the women in the class.
Great teacher, helpful, do the lab work ask questions talk to him, eventually things will fall into place and you will learn more than you thought. lectures not mandatory but its well worth going. Took him for Geos 100 and geos 250 taking more next year!
Tark is an inspiring funny and smart instructor although this class is a challenge. One lab took me 18 hours outside of class time to complete, and the labs are due a week after you do them. Also, he's slow to mark things. It has been 11 days since I wrote the final, and still no grades have been posted from him.
Tark is AWEsOME! He has a great sense of humour and makes class fun! He try's to give his students enough knowledge to stand on their own 2 feet. He is hard, but if you are willing to learn, he goes may more and an extra mile. He is the best instructor I have had at Camosun College, I couldnt give him a glowing enough review. Take his courses!
Tark is a good professor and very, very knowledgeable about the subject material. His tests are fair, he is very forgiving about late assignments, and he has a great sense of humour. His labs are hard as hell, but you learn a lot. You really can't go wrong taking a course from Tark.
Tark will keep you on your toes. If you come to class and make an effort you will be okay. His labs are time consuming, be prepared. Tark tests are just that, Tark tests, aka, challenging! Tark is the kind of teacher to go the extra mile for his students, he enjoys teaching and this shows. If your in his course and need help, ask, he will help you!
one word (AMAZING)! this guy just makes geology and earth science interesting and fun. tests are a bit hard but he gives you take home tests and study sheets, and he allows you a cheat sheet for all tests! (they actually make you study better), labs are a bit tough in the upper level classes but he is super easy going and friendly.
Tark is a very nice guy. He is reasonable, if you talk with him. I felt like dropping his class many times. Tark, is extremely confusing though, he (I) never knew where he was in the lecture.
I only had him for Chem 120, but he's terrible. His notes are next to impossible to read, his labs have next to no explanation so if you dont read the pre-lab over five times you'll screw up the lab horribly and the lab reports are done without having a clue what your doing. The only good thing is that if you finish them he marks very fair.
First thing you should know about Tark is that he wants you succeed. He teaches above a first year level though so be prepared to ask questions constantly and get clarification on what the hell he is talking about. Second thing you should know is that his labs are just ridiculous!! This is where working together and asking Tark for help comes in.
Really good lab instructor. Tells you exactly how to do the calculations and makes sure your data is right everytime. Idiot proof basically.
Tark... where to begin. As soon as you look past his ridiculous metaphors, he presents solid information in a fashion easily understandable (however he lays out his lectures in a bit of a zig zag pattern) He is an encyclopedia on his subject and never fails to uphold a student challenging his ideologies. By far one of my favourite profs.
long labs 20 pages usually but you get great marks if u finish them. smart cat. love his class he teaches you so much.
Too smart for his own good, brilliant even. Perhaps assumes students know more than they do, but very fair grader. Teaches at a high level, long labs, fair testing.
This is a dense course. Labs are long and intimidating, but you learn so much. His lectures seem all over the place and his metaphors make no sense, but its worth going to lectures. He's a fair marker. Tests can be hard but he divides your grade by the highest mark. I was just taking this as an elective but now I want to go into science. uh oh
He is an awesome teacher. I enjoyed the class with him. We go to a field trip every month. He is very easy going. He takes any late assignment. He is very kind and funny. His lecture is very intriguing. He talks many kinds of things and try to make us laugh. I recommend taking this class.
Probably my favorite prof I've ever had. You'll feel bad because his classes are so easy but he puts so much care into helping you out and has so much enthusiasm. his lab reports are books but they're easier than they look. he will also be offensive to the tumblr crowd so don't take his class if you're lame
Tark is fantastic! His lectures can feel a bit overwhelming, lots of info in a short amount of time. His labs are long and can feel intimidating, but they're easy and very informative. When he's talking in labs LISTEN TO HIM!! Overall Tark is a great guy, I can't wait to take more of his classes. Treat him well, Tark is a treasure.
I've honestly taken every single course I can with this teacher, and my friends and I still talk about him now, in our first semester without a Tark class. Favorite teacher I have ever had! He's fun, cares immensely about the topic (and you, learning the topic), and is literally a walking encyclopedia in his field (and even other fields).
If you are taking his courses for prerequisites or for Geology, he is good choice for you. The material can be a bit dry IF you are not going into this particular field, geology, etc. He has several in class and out of class time field trips to varying locations in lower Vancouver Island like Sombrero Beach, Cattle Pt. He's a good Professor!
If you have other options for courses with him, take the other teachers. He makes lots of inappropriate comments and rambles on in lectures. He's not helpful at all when you ask for advice on what to study. I can't wait till I finish GEOS 100 and hopefully never have to see him again.
Tark is probably my favorite prof I took every class he taught at camosun and thoroughly enjoyed them, his lectures are super informative, and his occasional off topic rant even more so. I learned far more from him than expected from the course content, and the field trips were so good!
Tark's labs are long and time consuming, but he's a fair marker. He tends to go on tangents in lectures, but they're usually funny/ interesting stories. He's super knowledgeable and an all around nice guy once you get to know him.
Tark is a really nice guy and he's hilarious, but his lectures can fall off the tracks because he loves telling stories. The field trips are actually really interesting, and he's very passionate and knowledgable about rocks and the earth in general.
Tark can sometimes be a bit inappropriate when it comes to joking and stuff but he really cares and makes the class relevant and fun. I really enjoyed his classes.
Such an engaging teacher! He goes off on hilarious tangents that (almost) always have an important message about the topic at hand. Very knowledgeable
