Dr. Sheel's lectures always overran lecture times. On exams he never gives part marks, if your answer is wrong 0 for you. His notes suck and he is very unclear. Only thing that got me through the course was Theresa, she was a god sent. Tries to be friendly, but he's a bad professor. If possible take a different prof!
Average level of knowledge but not difficult if you pay attention and work outside of class. Always available in his office to approach.
Great Professor. His lectures are monotonous but you will definitely learn a lot of math in his class. He cares about his students and is a pretty decent grader. His mid terms very fairly okay . The assignments are great grade boosters
Nice guy, willing to help. Grades assignments tough, is very specific in what he is looking for.
Pretty chill guy, doesnt seem to care if you come to class or not. theres no need to buy the text. his online notes are AMAZING.. i never went to class bc i can learn just as much from his notes on d2L, and they're even clearer than his lectures sometimes. wants you to succeed. its a semi hard course but he's there 2 help. his tests are long tho :(
He is very difficult to understand, comes off as rude and goes way too quickly in class. His notes on D2L are barely readable, and he assumes that you know everything already. I would not recommend to anyone who has more difficulty with math.
T. Sheel is the best math prof I ever had! He is funny, and he seriously is there for you. You say you don't get it? He responds back with good. Because he wants you to learn. He wants you to participate, though, he is all about the two-way street saying. Weekly assignments like any other math, but tests are the hard, but passable.
He is one of the best professors I have seen in many senses. He knows mathematics and he is very humbled. He gives lots of extra problems outside the textbook that you can work on and do great on exams. In terms of office hours he is almost always available and very helpful. He is generous in marking and very understanding.
The best math professor I've had at mun. He understands that people can struggle with math and he does everything he can to help. Any time you want to contact him he will always be there. Gives lots of extra practice and the assignments aren't too long. Tests are a bit tricky but his practice tests are identical to the real thing. He's funny too!
He expects that you are a Math person. Which I'm not. I asked a few questions throughout the course and every time i felt like an idiot because I didn't know the answer myself. Even so, if you follow his notes and examples you shouldn't have troubles passing. Be prepared though to get examples on tests that are way more difficult than in class !
Has a very thick accent. It was very hard to understand what he was saying and he could not understand the students who were talking to him. Other than that, do work for this class and you will succeed
Honestly, hes the rudest prof at MUN and is not helpful whatsoever, and not just to me. He literally made a student cry because he told them to go up to the board and explain their answer for a question and made fun of him. would never recommend.
his accent is SO THICK! His teaching is pretty good, but I find it very, very hard to understand what he's saying a LOT of the time. He also has trouble understanding students when they ask questions, which is frustrating. If I had heard him speak before, I probably wouldn't have registered to be in his class. If you have another option, take it!
Hes a really sweet man who goes at a perfect pace in class. I like him because he doesn't rush through things. Hes also always there for help if you need it! He's just so nice and really cares that you succeed. The only complaint I would have is sometimes when jokes he can be abrupt and people misinterpret his jokes. Also give a lot of bonus points
Great prof, really cares about the success of his students! There are comments on here about him calling people out randomly but I can guarantee you he will not call you out unless you are doing something disrespectful in his class. Gives great notes! Classes are recorded. Assignments are fair and gives bonus marks for attendance and participation.
Absolutely brutal. He knows what he is doing and is willing to help, also writes good notes but I couldn't understand a word he said. I personally learn a lot from listening so I wouldnt recommend if you share this trait. Very thick accent, and can't process questions very well, would be a great teacher other than that.
He's a very intelligent prof, knows his subject well however he is difficult to understand and has trouble understanding when you ask him questions. He will attempt to answer your questions but often give unclear answers.
Great prof, yes he is sometimes hard to understand but gives great notes. He is willing to help and stresses this in his classes. Exams are fair but difficult so make sure you study the harder questions he gives you. An assignment a week which is hard but definitely helps with the material.
Hard to understand. Doesnt clearly answer questions asked in class. Goes way too fast. Is rude during office hours
Overall he's a nice man, but in class his lectures are very fast and doesn't answer all questions fully. His accent is very very heavy and makes him hard to understand when explain some topics.
Tarun is a nice man, he is funny, and really enjoys the material that he teaches. The problem that I had with him is that he isn't exactly the best at showing others how to do calculus. His accent is very strong making him very hard to comprehend. He flies through his slides and doesn't even do all the workings for his examples.
Doesnt explain difficult concepts. Doesnt speak english very well
Steel is caring and nice although he's english is not the greatest and he is not great at explaining some topics. He is okay.
He is an overall nice man but isn't a good teacher. he wants his students to do good but isn't the best at helping them do good. the notes he gives are usually messy and hard to read. his marking standards are to high and also gives very challenging questions. Wouldn't recommend if you are looking for a good mark. he also rushes through topics
Tarun seems to act like he wants his students to do good but doesn't really do a whole lot to help them. He puts in minimal work and his lectures are just rewriting notes that someone else made. He doesn't make an effort to make sure you understand he just expects you to know it. He is also very rude if you ask him a question.
Tarun wants you to understand but his way of teaching is mediocre at best. He has rude responses to questions from students. Although he is a nice man occasionally, he is always rude and intimidating during office hours. Math 1000 is a very difficult course and having Tarun as a prof makes it all the more worse. Avoid if possible.
Absolutely brutal. Says he is always available for help but very intimidating when you take him up on it. Rude Prof. Challenges his students when they ask a question in class and make them feel awful. Accent heavy. Avoid at all costs
i find he makes the course more confusing that what it should be. if it wasn't for the fact that i took a calculus course in high school, i would be totally lost and have no idea what to do as he doesn't explain what he teaches very well, also his tests are pretty hard. i find it better for myself to not go to class b/c i know most of the course
If you work at this course and put in the time required you will be fine. He is accessible outside of class and answers emails. Recommend to focus during the lectures and keep up with work as assigned. Grading and outline was fair. Tests are difficult, but fair. Friendly and remembers students who ask for help.
Dr. Sheel was a wonderful prof. I found he went at a perfect pace. I didn't have much trouble understanding him, however a lot of students did. People found him rude, I did not at all. I thought he was so sweet. Very caring professor. The only complaint I would have is that his tests were 7 pages long. Not enough time to finish and check for errors
The worse prof. Made the course more confusing than it is, often has to be corrected in class and Is accessible outside of class but is very rude and intimidating. Will call you out in class and has a heavy accent. Markers make a lot of mistakes so always check their corrections, his solutions online are often wrong as well. Tests insanely long.
If you are fairly good at understanding accents, I would take Dr. Sheel. I was intimidated by the reviews on here but I really loved him as a prof. He wants to help you, so make a friendly face with him at the beginning. However, his tests are incredibly long.
Tests are long in a short period of time. If you don't solve math according to his way, you will get a 0 whether it is right or wrong. His English is worse than a toddler. WIll not understand your question and make things more complicated. If you go for help in the office, he will question your abilities and insult. Too long assignments. AVOID!!!!
Sheel is a nice person, but I just don't think that teaching is what he should be doing. He overcomplicates things, and takes marks away for doing the smallest thing wrong.
If you have other options, take them. I hope you don't want to fail.
Gave rude and nonconstructive feedback on tests, was harsh and delivered a rough wake-up to most students. Had bonus questions in class but it wasn't clear if they actually counted. Was frequently demeaning, telling students they shouldn't be in his class, and singling out students who did poorly on example questions.
Has a very thick accent and is sometimes difficult to understand. He can be rude and tend to blame his students failure on their stupidity and not a fault of his own teaching. Would not recommend.
Although his accent is heavy, you pick up on it after a week and can quickly pick up on the material. There are assignments every week which are difficult but group work is allowed and they make up about 15% of your grade (good grade booster). Midterms were extremely fair and I felt very prepared for the final. He also wants his students to succeed
Such a cute little man! Makes so many funny analogies, and cares about his students actually having a good understanding of the material.
One of the worst prof's I have ever had. You can barely understand him and he will confuse you in lectures. Would not recommend this prof to anyone
Too much Pressure
Tarun has a very thick accent that is hard to understand. He also makes very hard tests. I failed math 1090.
A lot of people criticize his accent but you easily get used to it within a week or two. His notes could be more clear but he explains the concepts well and occasionally teaches shortcuts that help understanding. As long as you print out the notes beforehand and copy the examples after the fact, the class is easy.
Hes seriously the worst prof I have ever had. You cant jnderstand him at all, he gets mad when your on your phone in a huge lecture hall... when hes writing notes on the projector you can read the projector at all because of the lighting and angle he writes at... its just not worth it to take this course with sheel.
His writing is not eligible what so ever.i do not recommend taking this prof if you are hoping to do well, he tells you if you are doing bad that this course is not meant for you... he gives great motivation as you can tell
Difficult to understand, a little bit rude and seems to not care if his entire class is failing. Also his writing is like chicken scratches and hard to follow.
Very good prof. He is really care about students' results
Very good prof. Knows what he is talking about and explains it well. Once you get used to his accent you'll love going to his classes. He did lots of useful examples in class. His assignments were fair and helped learn the material really well, and they always had a bonus question. Definitely my favourite prof I've had so far.
The best math professor Ive had at Mun by far. Do yourself a favour and get to know him and dont be afraid to visit his office for questions. He really does what he can to help. He was amazing for bonus questions, and will focus on the problems he knows students struggle most with. Though hes tough sometimes, hes the best. I recommend fully :)
I had Professor Sheel for both math 1090 and 1000. He does have an accent but I got used to it quickly. He gives lots of opportunity for bonus points which can be a good grade booster and his assignments are fair. His exams can be challenging and long but he does a good job focusing on what's important in class and explains things well.
I had Dr. Sheel for Math 1090 and purposely took him again for Math 1000. He is a little hard to understand at first due to his accent but you get used to it pretty quickly. He posts lecture notes online incase you happen to miss a class, but I highly recommend that you attend all of his lectures. Overall a good prof, especially for 1st years.
Not good at all, argues with students in his class when he doesnt know how to explain stuff..
He is an average professor, I would not take him again but I felt like his lectures were good enough most students have difficulty with his accent which makes it hard to understand him during lectures. His midterms are very difficult and need a lot of practice to do well on. He posts notes online so don't have to waste time writing questions.
His accent is very thick and hard to understand, he's incredibly rude when you ask a question in class and makes you feel stupid. His notes are very difficult to read and he goes way too fast through material. His assignments are also way too long along with exams. If you have him, Good luck.
Boring and basically one of the worst profs at MUN... has an idea of what he has to teach but isnt any good at teaching... argues with students in his class..
Generally lectures are boring and he seems to only be teaching so he can flex that he knows how to do questions students haven't learned yet, usually finishes a problem and then throws his pen on the desk and crosses his arms like a tough guy. Don't ask a question if you want to avoid being roasted. He's not that bad but he's just not that good.
A few things worth noting; he likes to flex his math knowledge on his students, 9 chances out of 10 he will make you feel like stupid if you ask a question, beware of the infamous pen drop, and his writing and english aren't the best. His assignments are fair and good practice for the test's though.
he is knowledgeable about this course however teaches it poorly. His printing is not great and hard to read his notes due to this, he also has a very thick accent and hard to understand. He makes his midterms very long for the amount of time given to complete it, very difficult to finish his exams. also makes you feel dumb asking questions in class
Tarun Sheel tried his best to help students understand but his english is hard to understand. His thick accent and broken english can make lectures difficult to understand at first, but the material is much easier if you attend class. He covers many examples, and lets students know what kind of questions are on the final exam.
Tarun is knowledgeable and is a nice guy who cares for the majority of his students. Unfortunately if you get on his bad side he can be pretty unhelpful. Course was demanding and graded harshly though this may be a reflection on the math department as a whole rather than Dr. Sheel.
Sometimes he is hard to understand, but in overall, he is a very good prof who cares a lot of the success of his students. He does his best to make us understand and even requests for our feedback so he can do better.
Hard to understand. Very rude to students who ask questions. Sometimes hard to reach outside of class. Takes attendance. Must complete weekly assignments (online and paper).
Occasionally difficult to contact, extremely dismissive of students who ask questions; very hard to progress in this course if you don't initially understand a concept.
Seems to be knowledgeable in the subject, but if you're interesting in learning from him don't bother. Extremely difficult to understand, can't talk to him outside of class, assigns difficult questions.
Very thorough explanations in lectures. Homework given makes you use multiple concepts and get familiar with exam level questions.
He knows what he's talking about but his writing is like hen scratches and his accent is sometimes incomprehensible.
Dr. Sheel is without a doubt the worst professor I have had to date. Not only was he quite difficult to understand, he failed to explain content he was doing and often fought students who asked questions about the material he was covering. Feedback on assignments was also not provided, so if not for the math help centre, I would have been lost.
I have done his Math1000 course. He has good abilities to show students the solution. Besides, his teaching style is good and he gives good feedback.
Abort Mission! I Repeat ABORT MISSION! Thick accent, doesnt know what he is talking about, rudest person I have ever met.
sometimes it can get a bit difficult for the students to understand but it you follow his classes you can score good. You can also go and see him after class if you have doubts.
Can barely understand and follow along. Is rude to students who ask questions. Avoid
Personally, he is a good professor. He can be a little blunt when asked questions that are too obvious or at least not expected at university level mathematics. The tests and assignments are easy. But Math is a very subjective topic so the best judge is yourself. Also, if you are in doubt, go for another professor with better ratings, but he's ok.
He was the best prof so far. Great lectures and you will definitely get good grades if attend classes. Notes are very useful. Knows what he is teaching.
Overall knows what he is doing and can teach. Unfortunately the language barrier is difficult to learn from and he's not good at answering questions. Also the worst writing i've ever seen... not kidding.
This guy should be rated much higher on this site; He's by far my best professor. I chose my Profs based on score, but Math was TBA. I seen that he was rated 2.5 and I was scared, but he's great. Don't let people fool you, it's true his English isn't the best, but he knows how to speak in a matter that you can understand, and records the lectures.
He is an awesome person. Gives good feedback. Wants his students too succeed.
Don't get me wrong, he seems like a great guy and knows what he is talking about, however, he is not a good prof. Unless you took advanced math in high school you won't understand ANYTHING. He goes over material extremely fast. Spent almost every class playing Mario Kart, Sleeping, or fighting with him on his teaching methods. Wouldn't take again.
He really doesn't deserve the rating he has on here. Yes, there is a lot of homework and yes, there is a bit of a language barrier but overall the mark you get depends how much work you put in. His classes are optional because he posts lecture captures each class and although he can be hard to understand, his notes for every lecture are very clear.
He's very kind and genuinely cares for the well being of the students. Unlike other profs at mun if you go to him for help he is always willing and happy to help you as long as you're willing to take the time and work hard.
BEST DECISION I EVER MADE , HE IS LITERALLY THE BEST PROF EVER AND ALWAYS READY TO HELP
Such a sweet guy honestly super helpful don't know what i'd do without his help in math
He made math understandable for me and without him teaching me would have probably never passed.
the usual stuff you expect from a math class. his accent might be a problem is you are not used to it, but he explains really well. his grading criteria is really clear and you get a lot of bonus marks on each assignment and midterm. a really good prof
He has such a bad name and I was scared but hes a sweetheart and really wants the best for his students. He has lots of times for you to see him for him to help you one on one and really tries his hardest to make sure everyone who attends understands the topic before he moves on. Made the transition from HS math to Uni math as easy as possible
he is very nice prof. he cares a lot about his students and hopes them to do well. He is so smart that whenever I had any kind of question he gets my point. He brings many example questions and solve it for the class and if u do all of the questions he posted, you will definitely get more than A.
Worst prof I ever had. I took his class for math 1090 twice and still BARELY managed to get a 50. He is very rude when students ask questions on how to work out problems and he makes you feel stupid. you better do well in his quizzes or assignments because his tests are difficult. I would recommend taking it online with another prof.
One of the worst profs I had. He would complain about no one asking questions, but would be very condescending if he did get one. Someone asked a question in class and he proceeded to tell her that he should give her negative marks on the next test for asking such a stupid question. I only passed with the help of tutorials.
I have a degree; this is the worst-taught course I've ever done. He doesn't reply to emails. Material poorly explained. After midpoint of semester, he sped through material and half-completed practice q's. Mispronounciates important terms. Hw is done by WeBWork which is atrocious. Lecture capture software is faulty. Be ready to fight for marks.
I didn't have a lot of contact with Professor Sheel personally as the course was delivered online, however, his assignments and homework were significantly harder than the examples in the notes. I would have to study 3-4 hours a day to scrape an A. Some content on assignments and exams were not covered. PhotoMath is a saviour on assignments!
over all he is not bad prof
Tarun is wonderful. Despite dialectical differences, I faced no issues in his class. His lectures are long, but he is very direct with his concepts. Posts many practice worksheets so the formats for his quizzes, which are every week and terms are very clear. Easily my favorite prof so far, take it from someone who barely managed a D in highschool.
Gives the most brutal and challenging assignments. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, YOU WILL NOT DO GOOD.
This prof teaches like he knows it's your second time taking this course, it's almost like he taught you this before the right way, and now he is just racing through to give you a second chance at the exam. Tarun goes through material very quickly and assumes you know the content before he even teaches it. he is a good grader though.
Acts like you should already know the material so he is very vague when explaining it, his writing is very difficult to read on longer problems and often uses the "I don't get how you don't understand this, its simple" bs to act like he isn't the issue. Unless you're already very good at math, avoid Sheel.
i'm having him as a substitute teacher because something happened to my other teacher but he's teaching style is pure garbage.... expects you to know everything and very hard to understand
Waste of your time and money, try to get a different prof unless you're fine with not being taught a damn thing.
This guy cannot teach for the life of him. "Students choose not to understand"...
Absolute joke of a prof. Very difficult to understand, does not seem to care about students, and does not give part marks for workings, instead he simply writes "very wrong" on side of the question.
Having Tarun is so stressful and confusing it made me question living on multiple occasions. the course has me beyond depressed. Bad prof and teaching style. :(
He is the prof which is currently subbing for my class since my other prof got sick. Ever since then, I have not learned a single thing. He rarely responds to emails and is very difficult to communicate with. I had a 98 in high school and I am struggling to pass this course. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Just completed what was probably the hardest final ive ever done. It was supposed to be a shorter exam with extra time but i literally had to leave out 4 out of 10 questions. Instead of testing individual topics he combines them all into one question and makes it impossible. Worst "prof" ive ever had.
Was in as a substitute half way through the semester and I went from getting 90+ to 40-60s. Very hard grader and his assignments/test are very difficult and not straight forward. He takes forever to answer emails and is very brief and unclear when explaining topics.
I did well in the class because I put the work in, but this was no thanks to any teaching from him. It is difficult to communicate with him over email, and he tends to come across as rude. If there was something about the online set up that made learning difficult, or if the tests had questions which weren't in the lectures, this wasn't his problem
Worst math class of my life, I struggled a lot and he doesn't get back to you at all. When asking for help, he assumes you should know it by now and comes off as pretty rude. The final exam was way more difficult then we were used to and he doesn't show you the correct way to solve the problem when grading just writes "wrong answer".
The lectures were nearly to understand. The notes and worked examples were a jumbled mess of incomprehensible scribbles. He told one guy in class, "What's so hard to understand?" Well, maybe because Tarun was teaching it? STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR! NO HELP AND INCOMPREHENSIBLE. YOU WOUld NOT BE SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS WITH HIM..
Tarun is the worst calculus teacher at the school by far. Stay as far away as possible from him. Tarun focuses on very small insignificant parts of the course and decides to test you on as many obscure things as possible. His assignments are also full of proofs, which are never taught throughout the course, and have no place in calculus 1.
Worst prof I ever had. He does not teach this course, only the easiest concepts, then gives you the hardest possible questions on evaluations. When I asked him questions in class, he said "didn't you do this in high school?" and "I'm not answering your question." Also, the class avg. for the midterm was 53, so there you go. AVOID HIM. AT ALL COSTS.
avoid at all costs
For starters i always get A in math courses and have found maths relatively easy up until this point. I dont have to say more do i? This is an easy path to an F in summary
Took his class and then immediately paid for a tutor to teach me the course after the first week. If you have trouble understanding thick foreign accents and horrible writing then don't even bother going to class.
Horrible. Does not explain anything, just writes it down and then says okay and moves on. Very hard writing to read, recorded lectures hard to follow. If you are someone who has trouble with math I would not recommend taking any of his courses.
Never under any circumstances take any of his courses. Explains things very poorly and just makes you more confused. Very messy and unorganized notes.
Awful prof, does not explain at all, makes you feel stupid if you ask a question, not easy to reach via email and will not answer questions via email. Very poor grader and does provide good feedback
Useless. Posts old pre-recorded lectures and doesnt engage with class at all. Chicken scratches and no explanation. You wont ever reach him and if you do, hell basically call you stupid for any question. Always aced every course and this dude is the reason I failed my first exam. Avoid. at. all. costs.
I had such a hard time at the beginning but when you actually focus and solve everything he provides you, you'll be prepared. He's also really understanding and a caring professor but you have to put in effort to understand and actually practice. The final exam was kinda hard though
Awful, multiple year old prerecorded lectures, difficult to understand the lectures, in these lectures, the camera picks up glare and you cant see what hes doing, his notes are near impossible to read. When he does live sessions he often replies in a saucy manner saying students should know the content themselves.
he is a very caring prof, just actually watch his lectures and practice the assignments and you will be ready for the exams.
The material is not difficult, he makes it difficult to understand. His handwriting is extremely difficult to decipher but if you get a tutor and do as many practice problems as you can (he gives a a lot of practice) you are guaranteed at least a pass. The final exam was fair but doing the practice exams and problems is a MUST.
He is the worst prof i've ever had. If you ever email him expect to wait 2 weeks for a response and to be talked down to for asking a math question. I did this course online, and most times, each week we were expected to do 5-6 pre-recorded lectures, 2 live lectures, a math assignment and either another assignment or quiz. Overall lazy & rude.
He gets upset when students ask questions. Talks down to them saying how they should already know the material. It is day 3 of online classes.. we are only young. Does not matter how much effort you put in you WILL be scolded for asking questions. He is very unclear when explaining problems and solutions. GARBAGE handwriting also. DO BETTER please.
I was in Sheel's class for a week and prayed a spot would open in another class everyday. I was shocked by how unprofessional he is. His lectures are a waste of time, he constantly insults students for taking this level of math and for asking for clarification on topics/questions. Sheel is a pathetic excuse of a professor, do not take his course.
Literally Useless. Seriously, if you see his name on your schedule, DROP. IT. Save your money, hell be the reason that you fail or ruin your GPA anyways.
He was so bad. I wanna give him a zero. But thats not possible, so I give him a 1.
The prof is actually really great. I don't understand why he is getting so many bad reviews. I have been off the schooling system for 5 years and came back, his lectures were amazing for refreshing my maths both 1090 and calc 1. If you don't read of course you will view the prof badly, lots of assignments which really helped me get a good grades..
He gets angry if no one asks questions, and gets angry if they do ask questions, and belittles you for not knowing exactly why you don't understand what he said. His speed is so incredibly fast that you can't even write down what he says in time to comprehend what he's teaching. I personally depend on good teachers for math, and he isn't one.
The professor avoids 1 on 1 sessions Professor to help you improve, even ignores your emails with no professionalism of responding back to you, he avoids students and speaking with them, if you ask a question in a lecture he puts you in a very uncomfortable situation in front of your collogues. Very unorganized... and careless unfortunately
Probably the worst prof i have ever had, very belittling and will insult you for asking questions. Please do not take his classes
Trash panda, do not take him. Seriously wait a semester to get someone different. Worse prof i've come by. Will not help with anything, can't understand him or his writing. Wont give you a chance to help your grade no matter if your family is dying, which is what happened to me. He treats his students like they should know everything. AVOID
he does NOT help when you ask for it. he dosent teach, he writes down the anwser, expects you to know how to do it without his explanation and then dosent give you time to read/ write it down. its brutal.
Professor Sheel doesn't care about his students. If you ask a question in class, he will belittle you. He responds to questions by saying "you should know this," or "this is something you should have learned in high school." He uses other websites besides Brightspace for assignments but won't tell students when these assignments are posted or due.
Terrible prof, belittles you for asking questions. Overall cannot teach this course whatsoever, nor does he have the temperament to be a professor. Will take away marks for skipping steps which he will actively do himself in his lectures. Avoid at all cost unless you have a strong mathematic background as you will have to figure this out yourself.
horrible math prof. will never take him again!!
If you can, avoid Tarun Sheel at all costs. He is an extremely tough grader, gives very poor feedback. Lectures are very messy and his notes are hard to read. He does the easiest possible examples in class and puts the hardest questions with nothing to refer back to on assignments/tests. Be prepared for lots of homework.
Sheel has the ability to do math but doesn't have the ability to teach it. Tarun sabotages his students' grades. He gives awful feedback, as well as teaches simple equations in lectures but provides advanced questions on his tests/assignments. Please don't take his course unless you have to. He is so mean that I am embarrassed to go to his class.
Tarun is by far the worst professor I have had since I started university. He knows how to do the questions on the board but fails to teach it to his students. His notes are very messy and hard to read, he may ask students if they have questions but belittles you if you ask a one, even simple questions like if somethings gonna be on an exam. Avoid.
Awful. Not only does he not properly teach anything, his ASSIGNMENTS of all things are so hard. He also belittles anyone and everyone (an over-exaggeration, but also not really..). Take any other math professor, just not him.
This mans notes are impossible to read and have no clear guide to what you should be doing, he is so hard to understand and follow due to poor English, and he constantly asks the class to ask questions but when we do he tries to belittle us and tells us that our questions are not worth explaining. you want to enjoy mun? never take a class of his
Awful, does not teach. He simply reads from his notes, which also do not explain the material well at all. Very difficult to understand, or read his writing. He says he does not understand why his students to not understand certain course material... Its very clear why we don't.
Terrible prof, likely the worst. Teaches simple solutions in lectures, and provides complicated questions on tests. Notes are complete jibberish, Rude to his students. Belittles when asking questions. Rude to the class for not understanding a topic. Poor grades are a reflection of his awful teaching. Most of his students fail. NEVER take his class.
20min into class, an alarm went off, and he didn't know how to stop it. Mid-alarm, most of the class left. I struck thru the class in hopes that I would gain insight on how to do my assignment, but nope. His "filled" notes on d2l are blank. Tarun is anything but a good prof. Feel free to take his class if you want your grade sabotaged.
TERRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE. I think mun purposely doesn't say who is teaching the course because people wouldn't pick him. his notes are terrible. he cant teach. apparently he's 25% behind and there's only a week left of classes. the misterm average was a 28%. mun should fire him and not allow him to teach.
Actually changing my degree now. I can't do anymore maths, he doesn't help ever. He got mad at me when i went to him for help because i couldn't understand what he was doing during the lecture. He doesn't teach, he just does it and moves on. Expects us to know cause it's "high school" stuff. Debated dropping out of mun due to just his class.
Purposely fails students. Thanks to Tarun I want to drop out of MUN. He had deteriorated my mental health this summer. Go to his class if you want to feel worthless for not knowing math
the worst prof at mun. terrible at explaining anything. His writing sucks. and he belittles students. avoid at all costs.
WARNING!AVOID AT ALL COSTS! If you are someone who struggles with math, please avoid this prof for your own sanity... His lectures are very hard to understand and he does not explain what is doing but just expects everyone to read his mind. He gets angry when nobody answers his questions as well as when people (give the wrong) answer his questions
So awful. Listen to me and drop the course. He is terrible!
Dr Sheel is not as bad as most make it out to be. If you can do mental math and understand basic algebra you will be fine. He gives blank and filled lecture notes and lots of practice sheets. His writing isn't that great but while he writes he speaks so it's not bad. Pay attention during the lectures, do the practice and you will be fine.
He moves extremely fast and only ever goes through a few practice problems in the sheet. He doesn't cover a lot of the practice questions shown on exams and in the homework sets he gives as that's something you'll have to do yourself. His feedback also sucks.
Extremely rude, impossible to contact outside class, rushes through everything. All of this, and to cap it off, he showed up late to his own exams.
Boasts about failure rates in first class. Tough grader but gives part marks and lenient with deadlines. His lectures, practice exams and notes are all over the place and are full of mistakes/missing parts. Knows his stuff but very hard to understand. We had to find outside sources to understand the material better. Avoid if you can.
I found Sheel really good, I was scared because of all the bad reviews and being my first semester of uni. He posts all the notes. You can also email him and go see him at his office. He's not rude or mean, he's very straight forward and blunt but he cares for his students and wants them to do the best they can.
If you have Sheel, run. Sheel is rude and ill-tempered. He don't care who you are or what your abilities are, the way he teaches math doesn't make sense to anybody but him. I went into 1090 with having very little difficulty in math and my current grade is indicative of how well he can teach. But hey, I passed with a 50 so I don't have to see him.
Bad experience
Teaching math without knowing how to write numbers and symbols doesn't bode well for students. Not only is he snappy, rude and hard to understand, he is completely unresponsive. It would take him weeks to get back to me, if he even did.
1. Awful English makes it really difficult to understand his class 2. Does not have his own notes, So the problems he solve does not exist in the notes and vice versa 3. Does not reply emails, Does not pick up phone calls. Disappears after the class 4. Can not explain advanced topics, spends most of the time explaining high school math. 0/5 not 1
I passed just because I went to tutoring after his first two lectures. The private tutor had more idea about mid terms and finals than him. Just email avilaskrjha at gmail dot com to get a tutor
Incredibly impatient with anyone that asks him a question and is a tough grader.
Having a bad math professor is inevitable and can be dealt with, but in addition to that, I also found him to be kinda rude and not easy to communicate with. I'd just avoid him if I ever had to take a math course again, especially if you don't like the subject, he most probably won't make it any easier.
I don't understand all the criticism. He had very clear lectures with lots of examples and ways to practice outside class. Nice and seemed to care how we did. I never took calculus before uni and I found the way he taught it very clear and helpful!
This professor is very clear on course expectations and midterm/exam reviews are very accurate to what is given. His tests and assignments are always very reasonable and he is really easy to communicate necessary accommodations with. He also always makes class very worthwhile to attend and I really liked him as a prof!
Although his writing is hard to read at times, he is a great teacher. He gives good clues for mid terms and finals and is very helpful. One of my favorite teachers and I don't know why his ratings are so low.
Disclaimer: I took Math 1000 after passing the CPT. I found his tests were very fair and if you studied the notes/did the assignments you could do really well (my friend who didn't do calc in high school found this as well). He does small weekly quizzes which was great for practice. He does have an accent but you'll get used to it quickly.
Very heavy accent and hard to understand his English. Attendance was not mandatory but there were quizzes once a week during the tutorial for a grade. There was an assignment each week that got harder and longer each week, with no exceptions for anything late, automatic 0. Exams were similar to review sheets, fairly easy if you do on your own.
Dr. Sheel's class was always the highlight of my day. After my first exam, I told him I thought I failed, and he went on a whole tangent about how he grades based on whether you "know how to drive," meaning if you know the rules and processes. Knowing the rules and processes throughout his course is the key to being successful.
Dr. Sheel is really good. He wants you to succeed and has very fair tests if you study and want to succeed. Helpful if you needed extra help and taught well.
Super reasonable prof that makes similar practice vs actual tests. I took calculus in high school and didn't take CPT so almost every topic was a review. I have never been more consistently to a class other than this one. I never learned anything new, but Dr. Sheel made his classes super worthwhile and I really loved his course. Super organized.
Best math teacher I've ever had. I had a 72 in math 1090 but because of him, I got a 95 before the final exam. You get 1 assignment a week which is very easy, online web assignments that don't take long at all and are even easier. Before every Test (2 total), he will put out a practice test that is nearly identical to the actual one. great guy too.
The professor has a distinct teaching approach, but attending class and engaging with the material pays off. Using Unstuckstudy alongside the free textbook helped me prepare well for the exams and quizzes. Overall, a rewarding class.
Tarun Sheel is a fair professor by giving out practice tests similar to the tests and online quizzes with what is there to be expected. He is a fair grader, but it's just the ability to communicate with students seem to lack from him. Some ways of him explaining do not make sense. Would recommend if you have a background in Trig or Algebra
The language barrier was very difficult that I stoped going to his class about halfway through because I could not learn and ended up paying for a tutor to teach me. He seems sweet I just could not understand him.
very very hard to understand him , almost no point in going to class, was better off not going and teaching my self the material , He also gave such a weird face when someone would ask I'm a question almost like every question was a dumb one in his mind . Wouldn't take him if you have tough time understanding people with foreign accents .
I stopped going due to the difficulty of understanding and had no problem studying with the material he provides. His sample exams are identical to the actual exams just different numbers. He is understanding and arranges plans if you can't to do the weekly quiz (online). He does tend to have smart remarks to students who ask questions in class.
Professor Sheel is very intelligent. For myself, I could understand him with the language barrier. Informative about homework but whenever I asked a question, I felt humiliated as "I should have done this in high school." Ok? but it's nice to have a brief reminder on the challenging topics. Had to hire a tutor from my hometown.
Professor Sheel was very difficult to understand, he was lazy and skipped many critical steps to each problem. He also had tests every Friday evening with a 2 hour window from 5-7 and if not completed you had a 0, no excuses! I wouldn't recommend Sheel and if you have an opportunity to change out of his class I would!
When attending his classes I struggled with the language barrier but you get used to it after a bit. His material he posts is honestly good but the way he teaches it in class is sometimes confusing and you end up teaching yourself. There is a quiz and online assignment each week but even if you did good it doesn't really help out your grade.
Hes just alright
It is nearly impossible to understand him because of accent. 2 weeks into the class and I'm already lost and demotivated for the course. Please avoid him at any cost.
Professor Sheel is smart but quiet and a little hard to understand sometimes with the accent. Asking questions was made to feel embarrassing. Quizzes every Friday night from 5-8pm if you don't complete you get 0. Mentioned the webworks once on first day and only again a month later after many people had missed them. Left hardest content for last.
Dr. Sheel gets a bad rep, but he is one of the, if not the best, math profs at MUN. He is very knowledgeable and truly wants the best for his students. He gives out a practice midterm before each one that is very helpful. Would definitely recommend!
So so so so so bad Hardest grader ever. On our recent midterm the average was a 30%, and over half the class got below 26%
SO BAD. Avoid for a few reasons 1)very harsh marker, the midterm average was a 30%, and blamed us for the poor marks. 2) very unkind, will imply you're stupid and will belittle you 3) doesn't answer emails 4) very hard to understand …etc More people fail this course than pass, save your time, gpa and money and escape while you still can
She is not a tough grader. Just doesn't know how to grade. upwards of 6 times this semester, I looked at her answer sheet to see that I got the same answer using all the same workings, yet received 0/5, 0/6, etc. I would request regrades, then be awarded full marks. No acknowledgement of her mistakes, she just doesn't know what she's at.
This teacher, His really nice, he shows the material really well, But the questions on the quizzes that you have to do, which is worth 10% of your grade don't align with material already learned, there's a general idea on how to do it on the notes, but not the complex versions of it to show the students how to do it. Wouldn't take again.
Do NOT take this prof if you have the option. He is difficult to understand and talks down to students commonly. I have had many math profs at mun throughout my degree and he was by far the worst. Without tutoring there is no chance I would have been able to pass his course.
Not that bad. He cares about his students
Tarun Sheel isn't the best professor to choose if you don't really think you are good at math. He moves extremely fast, and is disrespectful of students that ask questions despite regularly asking if there are any questions throughout a lecture. He does not motivate students to learn, rather I found even myself dreading going to Math.
Professor Sheel talks down on his students whenever they ask a question. His lectures are hard to follow and he grades unfairly.
Professor Sheel teaches an easy course in the most difficult manner I believe he could find. He asks for questions often and yet when he receives them speaks down to the student(s) in a way that far from encourages further questions. He can also be very difficult to understand.
He is not near as bad as people think. His test are extremely fair, if you pay attention in his lectures he is not hard to understand and he is helpful when you need clarification.
Grades fair. Bit hard to understand sometimes but not as bad as people say.
There's a lot of mixed opinions on him. He's not as bad as some people claim, however if you struggle at math there's probably better options out there. He's a bit of a tough grader, and sometimes lectures aren't very helpful. However, I will say his practice tests are very useful and always very similar to the actual test! Expect weekly quizzes.
He is a prick. Very fast paced, does not fully cover topics, and is difficult to understand. Almost impossible to pass with this prof.
Very hard to understand as he has a thick accent. Very rude when you ask questions. He just dismisses your questions because "why would he ever do that".
If you can get past the accent you'll be fine. Gives a lot of good practice but grades hard, I once lost points for doing more then asked because the TA said to.
Professor Sheel teaches the course material in overly complex and difficult ways. When no one answered a question during a 9am Friday lecture, he proceeded to go on a rant about how important it is to know this stuff. He often answered questions in patronizing ways which could made you feel stupid for asking.
The tests and assignments were fair, and the practice worksheets and practice tests were good help. His teaching is also decent, but if you ask him a question he answers very bluntly and it comes off as rude.
Most of the reviews here are accurate. However, he does post lots of review and his tests were fair. He did not get through all the course notes this fall, and left half the questions on Brightspace blank, but these examples didn't end up being tested. Final was fair, noncumulative. I stopped going to class because it just got too discouraging.
He provides practices tests that are almost identical to the actual exam, which makes studying 10x easier. His tests focus on simpler questions rather than complex ones. Asking questions can be uncomfortable as he tends to argue and come across as rude. His accent his impossible to understand. Is a good prof, well prepares his students for exams.
He is an awesome professor, although I was nervous before taking this course with him due to others' reviews, I had no problems. He provides gap notes prior to each section and will post the filled notes after class for both examples completed in class and extra practice. As long as you are willing to listen, you will succeed in the course.
