Eccentric. That's the nice way to put it.
Professor Van Horn was by far my favorite teacher, the first week she is going to try and scare you. a girl was late the first day, and she dropped her from the class, she hates late people HAteS. but after the 2 week, she even told us i am just trying to scare you . but she has a very structured way of doing speeches making it so easy for speechs
SHE IS A MONSTER! She sort of lookes like cruela devil with blonde hair. Did i mention she was a monster? Don't call her sweetie...she doesn;t like that.
The first few weeks she is really intimidating, but do not drop the class because at the end of the semester she is really nice. It will seem like she grades tough, but she doesn't. As long as you meet all the requirements in your speech and do a decent job, you'll get an A. Really good teacher. The final is easy, but she makes it seem really hard.
Her class is a lot of work, but it's passable. She is kind of rude at times, but I think she means well...she is probably just burnt out on bad excuses and lazy students. You will learn a lot and she truly cares about her students. Don't take this class if you are looking for an easy one. Good professor, tough class...but worth it.
Intimidating and rude at first. Care a lot about attitude( added student just for saying hello back to her and for giving up their seat) Tries to act tough in the beginning. Really easy grader as long as you follow her format. Lots of petty work but not difficult at all. Don't be scared.
If you think this class is hard, you must be a moron. This teacher expects you to act like a responsible college student,I don't think that's asking too much. She wants you to be in class on time, complete your work on time, and be respectful to her and your classmates. If this is too much for you,you should rethink attending college. So quit whining!
OMG! PROF. VAN HORN IS AMAZING! SHE IS EXTREMELY HELPFUL, SINCERELY CARES ABOUT HER STUDENTS. SHE OFFERS RESOURCES TO HELP STUDENTS :) YES, IT'S WORK, IT'S COLLEGE. HER CLASS IS NOTHING TO FEAR. PAY ATTENTION TO HER INSTRUCTIONS, BE ON TIME AND YOU'LL BE FINE. IF I CAN DO IT, ANYONE CAN...I HAVE 2 KIDS - C'MON. SHE'S A NICE AND PLEASANT TEACHER!
I LOVE MRS. VAN HORN !!!!!! Take her class she is not an easy A but you learn A lot...She may seem she requires a lot but she helps you lots to do you work ...SHE is VERY clear...
I hated Public Communications b4 this class, she made my confidence go way up, volunteer in her class, DO NOT DROP-she is so sweet, its so funny how she tries to scare everyone like others were saying, very easy grader, JUST DO ALL the lil assignments all so easy, final she tells you all the quest's, Very organized and you better be too!
I went into Speech with expectations that it would be about how to face your fears, how to overcome being nervous, how to calm yourself when and if your mind goes blank. With Speech being the number one fear for people I just expected there to be that type of teaching. However, I felt like we just learned how to write a good outline. Disappointing!
I wish I had taken this class as a traditional lecture class rather than online. I can tell that Professor Van Horn is a very kind & passionate teacher, and I think I would have gotten much more out of being in class. The online format for a speech class was kind of confusing. This is the best speech professor, but don't take the online class.
I felt very intimidated at first by her style of teaching. I can say that she really does want you to succeed in her class. Very helpful when help is needed. You will learn about other things other than speech. Very informative, I would recommend her.
Van Horn is fantastic!! I learned SO much from her class. I was dreading taking Speech but she made it really fun and interesting. She genuinely wants everyone to succeed and makes the outlines very clear. Just try not to procrastinate and BE ON TIME. Oh and don't let her intimidate you the first day, she only acts scary to weed out the slackers =)
Dont miss more than2days, do ALL assignments&practice! Only 1quiz&final - both scantron. You learn how2do great outlines&better your speaking skills. She likes2be intimidating &rude at times. I don't really like her attitude, but she's fair. Prepare for "song of the day" almost every day. If you know the singer/qoute - she'll put you on a pedastal.
She is awesome, she can help you really learn and integrates you in class, she has a neat approach by teaching you like a younger student and the information penetrates very well, however she does tend to ramble on about herself she kind of assumes that everyone in class is underexposed to the world, thats kind of how she perceives students, well at
Took the online version of this class. This class is not for everyone online, and for a lot of people it would probably benefit them to take her traditional course. She is a fair teacher who cares about education. If you are going to be lazy, you are better off skipping this class.
This one is tricky! she is a monster the first day! DO NOT BE LATEEEEEE!! but over the semester she truly does care about you . she is all about being organized, so if your a slacker do not take her. the only bad thing is i got all A'S on my speeches and got a B cuz i did not get an A on the final. she does not use the book so DO NOT BUY ITTT!!!
Don't be late or absent. Read EVERY PAPER she gives you. Book is very helpful. Did I say Don't be late?... Well, don't be late. She seems intimidating and rude at first, but it is just to get rid of the students that intend to waste her time. Do your outlines, practice, practice, practice. Oh, and Don't be late!
She will scare you half to death the first day. If you are willing to put in the work you will find this class to be more than what you expect. The professor is very particular about what she wants but she always explains what she is looking for. She cares about her students. Read the text book and apply it to the work. Be brilliant!
She is very scattered and unorganized. Not clear in giving any type of direction. I dont think she even knows what she is looking for
All in all, she is a fair grader, but make friends with those in your class. I took this class online and was seriously frustrated and confused 95% of the time. In the end, I learned not to worry much about the content of my work but the format. I'm no better at public speaking than before I took this course.
She is a really awful teacher. Some assignments were unnecessary, she made us listen to an American song book song every class and the songs were horrid. She loves a kiss ass. She grades mostly fairly but I left class easily one day and I felt she always had something against me for it. Dont miss class or she will drop you
She's terrible, she's not helpful in anyway. She does, indeed, play favourites.Don't be late or miss class, she will give you a hard time about it for the rest of the semester. she doesn't lecture or teach in anyway, and the textbook was only used once.
Although she is a good speech teacher, she has a horrible bitter attitude ( at least when i took her)overall i would never have her as a prof. again simoly because of the attitude
Intimidating teacher at first, intense syllabus, but everything she expects is in there. Tips: don't be late, do your outlines, turn in work on time (gets stamped), let her know if you can't make it to class or get dropped. Overall easy class if you come prepared. Book hardly used/2tests-quiz&final/few pgs of notes. Sit up front/don't text/get vhs.
very intimidating at first, 1st day she told us she didn't like stupid people. After a few weeks she'll tell her story and then you'll understand why she is the way she is. Good Speech teacher although she does expect perfection from her students. DON'T BE LATE! turn things in on time or she'll call you out in front of everyone. Good class!
I have been a student for a very long time, and I have never met a professor who was more unwilling to work with students. She was extremely rude and short with me, so much so that I decided not to continue her class. Do yourself a favor and take some one else. You wont regret it.
She is very kind and tries hard to help her students out. I took her online class which i hate very much, but I DO think Van Horn is a very good teacher nonetheless.
Passionate about what she teaches, & not afraid to speak her mind. Takes some getting used to. Just show up, turn things in on time, and do your speeches. A lot of work, but if I can do it, anyone can! Its not too bad getting up infront of people after the first speech. You listen to everyones and kinda get to know them better.
Van Horn ranks at the bottom of my list. As previously stated, she does indeed play favorites. If she doesn't like you, she'll needlessly dock off points on all of your assignments; yeah, she's one of those. Terrible attitude and has a few screws loose as well. Avoid her at all costs. Save yourself the headache and take Anson.
This woman changed my life. Her story is very inspiring. Yes, she demands alot of hard work from her students, but it's College now... so stop whining. An organized student who has determination will have no problem acing this class. Alot of work, mandatory attendance, etc. She inspired me and pushed me. Definitely worth the work.
the first day she tries to scare you so stick aroound shes the nicest woman i have ever met. dont use your phone or she'll hate you the whole smstr. shes super easy and tells you exactly what she expects. just have everything on time and its an easy A! i lveeee prf vanhorn! shes amazing and changes lives and helps you figure out your life.
The best professor for speech. Her story is very inspiring. Yes, she demands a lot of hard work from her students, but it's College now.. so stop whining. You will learned to be organized in this class. A lot of work, mandatory attendance, etc. She definitely inspired me . Definitely worth the work.
Amazing teacher, very easy just do speeches and turn everything in on time. Go to her tutors and she will love you. The text book is very much used in this class, she tells you exactly what is on your final. At first she seems hard, but stick around and you won't regret it.
she is a good teacher but i get scared of her sometimes. she grades pretty fair. Her out lines are hard
At first, she'll really scare you. But push through, because honestly, there is no teacher on campus more helpful. If you're a nervous speaker, she'll cure you of that before the semester's even half over. She's really nice even though she can be scary at first. Also, she is INCREDIBLY willing to help the students. Great teacher, great class :)
She can be intimidating at first. But that is simply to test your commitment to the class. She is friendly and helpful in any way she can. Her style is encouraging and her use of music creates a relaxed atmosphere.
The work for her class isn't too difficult. Take good notes and follow her directions EXACTLY and you won't have a problem with the assignments. However,I will say that she isn't friendly and getting her to listen to you when you need her help is like pulling teeth. Take a different teacher if at all possible.
I highly reccommend her.You do all your speeches you'll be fine,TRUST ME :) You only have one test which is your final.Your h.w is just your speeches to basically do research etc.she gives you the outlines for every speech! so its pretty much easy.Attendance is important.Loved this class! TAKE HER.
Take her what are you waiting for?!
She is the worst professor to take for speech!!! I have a difficult time public speaking & everytime I would make my speeches durring the semester, she would make a stupid comment humiliating me about my speech. Although, I ended up getting an A, I do not recommend vanhorn!
She is moody and needs to understand she is teaching at a JR college not the real deal. The textbook is useless.
WARNING! Van Horn is strict. She is bossy. She is hard-headed and uncompromising. She pays little attention to students needs. She has very little time to help her students. One of the most difficult teachers I've ever had and I'm an A student! Avoid taking her class if at all possible!!
By far THE BEST PROFESSOR to take speech with. All of the negative comments are from people who DO NOT understand that this is a GOLDEN FOUR class! all you need to do for this class is 5 speeches. Do the research for your assignment and its cake, especially if you take the time to see a tutor.
Not my favorite professor by any stretch of the imagination. Makes a mandatory class a chore and puts no life into the material. It seems like all you need is a pulse to meet the requirements of her speeches. Calls herself the most rigorous speech professor, but she's hardly difficult, just very strict about what she wants.
She's strict and rigid with her requirements because of people that take classes only to drop out soon after. She only wants people who are serious with their studies in her class. Do your work, turn it in on time, don't be late to class, ATTEND class, don't use your cell phone and you will do just fine. Put on your big boy/girl pants!
Hard class that requires a lot of work. Not gonna lie, she can come off cold sometimes and is super strict in what she wants. But stick it through and you'll be happy you did it. She is a lot sweeter in person than she comes off as online. Be prepared and she'll like you!
This woman cares about people more than most professors I know. Her goal is to get everyone to succeed. That said, you cannot force learning on people who don't want it. She tries and that is where some of the negative comments come from. Bottom line, if you want to be successful, you will find her class relevant and easy. Amazing person.
Took the online class which involved roughly 5 hours/week of in class lecture/student speeches. So much for being online! Tasha is VERY close minded and a snappy *itch. It's her way or the highway. If you ask for clarification she'll make a condescending remark and tell you to ask a student. She confuses what she's taught with her other classes.
She is by the far the best teacher I have had in Citrus College. Don't get me wrong at first I was scared of this class because of how strict she was and mean...Even at times rude. But its only a front. Do everything you are suppose to do. GO SEE A TUTOR like she recommends and PLAN AHEAD...WAAY AHEAD!Tutors are amazing. Super Nice. AWESOMe CLASS
she seemed strict at first telling people off when late, but i know its for the best cause she mentioned how serious it is when your late to a job. she has a sense of humor at times and she always has a positive attitude showing us how to be successful. she is a nice lady so far so good.
Great class with training for life.
This was my favorite class of this semester. She is the greatest teacher and really cares about her students. She is strict but its because shes professional. Do exactly what she asks and you'll get an A, simple as that.
By far the best professor Ive had. She makes a personal connection with her students and pushes you to succeed. This class helped me discover so much about myself as a person. I highly recommend her to anyone. I learned so much more than public speaking skills.
GREAT PROFESSOR! She has a passion for teaching and it shows. She comes to class with a positive attitude everyday & constantly asks how the class is going for you & asks what she can help with. Just take her! You won't regret it!
She's honestly such a great and passionate teacher. Gives out many opportunities for extra points and very very enthusiastic. Did not think I was going to like the class the first couple of days and then it turned out to be my favorite class!
She is easily my favorite professor at Citrus College. She is so helpful, clear and passionate about her job. She is "gracefully intimidating" and somehow has a way of scaring you enough to be ON TIME and do all your work without being mean or rude. She is so inspirational and genuinely is such a great person! I feel very confident giving speeches!
Mrs. VanHorn is the best speech professor at Citrus College. If you want to learn all you can about speech for the future, take her class. She genuinely loves her students and encourages them with their future careers and opens up her students' eyes to all the opportunities there are out there. She cares about all of her students. You won't regret.
VERY HELPFUL, KIND, and LOVING. The world would be a better place if there were more teachers like her.
Professor Van Horn is INCREDIBLE!Though the class is not easy, she provides info on where to get help&allows students to set up appointments to meet with her in her office.I recommend all students who want to improve on their speaking skills to take her class. You will learn so much. She's very passionate about education and cares about her students.
Amazing professor. Really cares about your grade in her class, very helpful, cares about your education, and very inspiring! Great class but you do have to put in the work.
Van Horn is one of the laziest teachers. She rushes through lectures and questions. Doesn''t answer a question if she hears the slightest excuse. Doesn''t want to explain anything under the guise of it''s boring. Act like her class is the only thing in a student''s life. Really don''t get sick or have an emergency. Even though she has them a lot.
Professor Van Horn was one of my first teachers at Citrus College. The first day of class I was extremely intimidated by her as she was harsh to students who walked in late. Many students dropped out because she made it known that you would have to work for your grade. If you show up on time & put effort into your speeches, you will pass the class.
If she knows you put in effort she will grade you fairly. Our class became really close which made it a lot more comfortable to give speeches. After a few months of class she finally opened up to us about her life story which really gave everyone a different view of her. If she doesnt share her story, ask her, its a good one.
I took her online, and she's an incredible woman, but her online persona is a bit hard to work with. I'd recommend setting up a meeting with her prior to your first speech, and working out any questions. The final is really easy, and you can just study the main points of each chapterthe quizzes and you'll be fine. Make sure to finish your folder!
If you're in the honors program take her. She has an incredible background story that inspires students. She works with you to make sure you ace the class and help with your anxiousness in class. If you put in no work obviously she'll be harsh on you as well as if you give her no respect. Common sense, put in work and you'll get an A
Van horn is an amazing professor! In the beginning everyone tends to be afraid of her, but eventually shows her sweet side! There are 5 speeches and you have to do them all or won't pass. Took only 1 quiz and the final. Speeches are easy, just need to follow the guidelines. Would def take her again!
She comes off mean at first, but after the drop deadline, she becomes the nicest person you'll ever meet. She does this for a reason ;) Always participate. She's more than willing to write a letter of recommendation. You'll learn so much about yourself, and your major in this class. If you have the chance to take this class, do it!
Van Horn seems intimidating at first, but it's just because she knows you can do your best and expects that. She has an amazing story she shares with the class that inspires you. She wants to help you in her class and in real life. She helped me discover what career I was interested in and gave me confidence in my choice. Would take again!
I took this class as a HYBRID Speech 101 class - so online discussion boards + met once a week. I absolutely loved this class. On the first day of class, yes she can seem somewhat intimidating. However, as the semester went on, I realized that she is probably my favorite professor I have ever had, and I am on my 3rd year. Very passionate and caring
I'm taking hybrid, she's g8. If youre just doing this for a grade, dont take her but if you want to learn how to give a good speech then shes the one. The first few weeks, shes pretty terrifying and actually made me kinda-cry once (although i am kind of a weenie so) because I was late. But after that, shes awesome. DONT BE LATE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
This was my first year in the Honors Transfer Program and I can honestly say taking Honors Speech my first semester in Honors was the best choice. Please take this class because her class is easy and make sure to never pass up tutoring because it really did help me throughout the entire semester.
Professor Van Horn is an amazing professor! It is clear to see that she cares about the success of her students. The grading outlines for speeches were clear and not overwhelming or too much to ask of a student. Textbook needed to do well on the final exam (which is a written test). Overall an amazing professor, and one I would definitely recommend
Very genuine, caring, a firm but fair professor who really cares about her students. Open communication is the key. She will work with you. Easy A provided you show up and do the work, it's that simple.
All professors are people I admire and love. I admire Professor VanHorn very much and her achievements in life. The class was not very difficult at all if you remained constant on your work. Yet I found myself multiple times feeling very undervalued as a student and dismissed often. We understand you have over 200 students but all should be valued.
Professor Van Horn is by far one of my favorite professors at Citrus. She is so excellent at making her students aware of what is expected of them. the speeches are very involved but she gives perfect instructions and her handouts are so detailed and helpful. I learned so much in her class and would highly recommend her. She is so inspiring.
6 week course class. Mandatory onsite speeches throughout the class. Book is needed for discussion boards and self evaluations. Speech topics are interesting and fun. Extra credit is available from seeing a tutor - no limit on how many times you can go. Do your work and present well Easy A
If theres one class you take at Citrus, take speech with Professor Van Horn. Not only do you learn how to speak well, theres so many other life lessons you learn from the class. Do not get intimidated on the first day. I honestly wish more professors yell at you for being late. Theres 5 speeches, 2 quizzes, a couple small papers, and a final.
Don't play around with your speeches and you'll do exceptionally well, there's only the speeches two quizzes and a final if your not gonna read for the quizzes do all the extra credit between the xc and common sense you won't miss any points, for the final definitely used the tutoring center, there is a lot of flashcards but learn them for an A+
The class includes five speeches, and you must do them all or else you will not pass. You can go see the tutors for extra credit on your speeches. I took her hybrid class, which we only came once a week, but we had to do some online work, which was pretty simple. The speech guidelines are very clear and she gives out packets for each speech you do.
There are 5 total speeches to present. Your HW is mandatory, or else your grade will drop 10% for each missing assignment towards each speech. There are opportunities for extra credit. This class has an intimate setting, so don't be shy. Truth is, everybody is nervous at first. You'll learn to push through those fears and become a better speaker.
Very good professor who will help with anything and is such a great teacher love when she plays the movie clips that go along with the lesson
My favorite professor and class i've had! Van Horn's a great teacher and really cares for her students! Just show up to class ON TIME, do the work and you'll do great!
She is such a sweet lady! I took her distance ed class, and I really enjoyed it. I learned and retained a lot. She is constantly striving to make her class better. The best thing is that her assignments are practical and will help further you in life. She always made herself available and had tutors that were available for us as well.
To those who miss and skip class please do not add the class you will not pass and to those who try to be slick with bringing your cell phone you will lose points and will fail. This class is for dedicated willing to learn apply only. Positive is participation, tutor in class and extra credit take the opportunity with extra credit it helps.
I took Mrs. Van Horn online Speech 101 class. Learned a lot from taking her class. She is the best. We met once a month to do our speeches. Show up & will pass. Take advantage of extra credit. All I can say is do your speech & show up you will get a good grade. Yes, I would take her & recommend her. An easy A. Thanks Mrs. Van Horn
She is an excellent professor. Dont let the fact that theres 5 speeches scare you. She instructs you on how to do all assignments leading up to them. Extra credit is offered in a variety of ways. Everyone is nervous at first, but will become family. gives great feedback & inspirational. She truly cares about each student and their future.
Professor Van Horn couldn't have been any better! I highly recommend taking her if you are scared of taking a speech class. She is so sweet and understanding. She gives you all the resources and guidlines to pass her class with an A. I took this class online, it was a lot of work. But it definetly paid off because at the end I was less nervous.
Kinda strict & likes to micromanage her students. I feel like you learn more about doing exactly as she says than improving your communication skills. Also don't take this class if you think you might run late. Other than that, the class itself is straightforward with 5 speeches for the semester. Not hard, but teacher gives students anxiety.
Probably one of my favorite professors at Citrus College. She can be very intimidating at first, but don't let that scare you. She genuinely cares about her students and is a very inspiring person in general.
Your typical strict teacher that controls EVERYTHING. She's passive aggressive yet preaches about being positive. Lots of busy work. If you do everything THE WAY SHE WANTS IT, it's an easy A. Fair grader. Most of the students just resent her approach to teaching, which in my opinion is arbitrary. Sometimes, I felt like a robot.
This class was truly amazing. Van Horn is a great teacher with a ton of experience. DO NOT listen to the negative comments on this site about her. If you go to class, follow her easy rules, and give your speeches, you will get an A. She will change your life for the better!
I dropped her class because shes way too strict. You better not be late to her class on the first days or shell make you drop. She has too many rules. 5 speeches, if you miss 1 speech just drop the class because shell fail you no matter what. She seems like a good person but I didnt want to risk getting an F.
You'll learn a lot about public speaking but be prepared to dedicate most of your time to this class. Most work is research & lots of reading & tests are based on those readings. Cares about making you a good speaker. Strict rules about how to complete assignments. Was still understanding and accommodating during the time of transitioning online.
Took her for Speech 101. Didnt really pay attention to the professor lmao. She always sit in the back of the class. Goodthing my class was small and nice! That made me not as nervous!
She cares about her students and is very clear about her expectations. However, her class is a lot of work. Her prompts are very boring and don't allow for any creativity. Speeches are graded by a very strict rubric. If you do EXACTLY what she asks, you'll get an A.
The class itself isn't hard, but she isn't a good communicator and her instructions are very confusing. Technical issues are the student's fault regardless of the situation. She doesn't respond to a student's explanation, just ignores and places blame back on them. Class feels like you're just doing everything the way she wants, not learning much.
I took her online class in a short semester so it was fast paced. Discussion boards participation and a weekly speech presentation that has to be uploaded on time. She provides examples of what an A grade looks like so just go by that!
Professor Van Horn is great. Her instruction for assignments is very clear and she's always able to answer any questions. If you take her, be ready to work hard, complete all the speeches, and closely follow instructions. Do this and you'll definitely succeed.
