very difficult tests and he's really mean...do not take him
He made his expectations clear and was very willing to help or clarify.
lectures are boring and pointless, the book will be your savior
lectures are boring and unhelpful...find a study group
Tasso is an excellent professor! Take this class!
tasso rocks! he's so cute and funny, and very caring and helpful professor
i like the quizes and hw format
The easiest 123 professor compared to all of my friends'. Quizes should be 100 average since you get all the questions for homework, tests if you study, lectures are boring, i may have been lost if i hadn't taken calc in high school
i've never had a better math prof. he explains everything in every detail, which can be boring when you understand but REALLY helpful if you're a little lost. and his tests are crazy easy.
Tests and hw easy. Nice guy and the course is simple.

Test are relatively easy, nice guy.
Very very difficult material, but a great professor. He goes out of his way to encourage questions and try to help. If you enter 411, though, be ready to WORK.
I would compare his class to the process of leading lambs to the slaughter. One feeds them sugar cubes (the first 2 very easy exams), then delivers the killing blow (the very hard final). The textbook was awful, very unclear, and it skips many steps.
Took his class in 1993&1995. Very clear lecturer, friendly guy, made me love math - I was one class away from getting a minor in math. If KAPER's teaching only take HIS class.
Kaper is very intelligent. He knows his stuff! Exams weren't difficult by any means either.
He goes on tangents occasionally, and I think he has a touch of OCD, but he's a fantastic lecturer, and the best professor I've had at BU thus far. He's very clear and seems to care about his students. Best of all, his exams are fair, and you know what to expect. Oh, and he speaks English.
Clear in his lectures. He makes fair exams, if you pay attention there will be no surprises on the tests
Very intelligent man and knows calculus. His teaching lags a little however. Writes everything he says on the board which gets cluttered fast and may cause confusion. Once you understand the concept, avert your attention temporarily. Very willing to help and test are fair. Final is a little tougher.
A great prof with a vast knowledge of mathematics. His tangents and quips are interesting and add a little humor to the class. He's a bit methodical, but that's not a problem, just a quirk. His exams were easy and the overall course was made simpler by his examples and lectures.
Tasso is the man!! Awesome class, very helpful, extremely nice guy with tons of fun information.
Kaper knows his calculus and he understands the student's situation. He is extremely helpful and even though at times he may get boring, he tends to liven up the class with his randomness. He writes everything on the board, but he clarifies and expects us to ask on average 10 questions per topic. Not to mention, he is a funny Dutch guy.
Kaper is a pretty good teacher, but this class is SO boring. Exams are pretty fair, but he doesn't curve so don't count on just beating out the average. If you are not interested in calculus and are just taking this class for a requirement or something, take it with someone else, but if you enjoy the material anyway, go for it.
Lectures can be boring and repetitive, but helpful. Quiz questions are from the homework and test questions are usually similar. The final is a bit tougher. If you go to class and do the homework, you should do fine.
His teaching style is quite repetitive and boring. He does, however, know what he is doing. The material is not difficult so you can understand it quick easily. However, to assimilate it might be harder- the homework assignments are choosen carefully and one should take to them. The only problem is the boredom experienced during the lectures.
Kaper is the man! His lectures are very clear, he writes EVERYTHING he says on the board, and he gives useful example problems. Exams are a bit long, but if you study hard enough you should be able to finish them on time.
Ok so Kaper is a funny guy. I think he has a serious case of OCD that he needs to take care of, but overall he's ok. Pros: Easy grader, very generous with partial credit, humorous, cares about student's understanding. Cons: boring lecture, focuses too much on derivations, assigns tons of hw, can make calc confusing at times.
Great professor. Takes what could be a difficult class and makes it interesting and even fun through careful explanations given during lecture. The one complaint I have is that he sometimes made mistakes in grading the exams, but upon going to him he always corrected the mistakes and gave me the grades I deserved.
Interesting guy, funny at times, but his lectures are often so boring that i want to slip into sweet death. Do the homework and go to discussion for the quizes and you'll do fine. You could skip lecture altogether if you can deal with the guilt (which is not that tough). Overall, managable class but kaper can be very boring.
Personally I think a strong background in calculus was necessary before taking this class. I relied mostly on my notes from high school to do homework and tests. He is passionate about teaching, but if you need to fulfill your math requirement and aren't a math/engineering major (like I was), I would recommend taking an easier math class instead.
As a non-engineering major, I had a rough time in this class. He really has a thing for derivations and awkward jokes about rice-cookers and "hunks of smelly blue cheese". He always gave a few extra points on tests if you went to office hours, but I'd recommend someone else if you're just looking to fulfill your math requirement.
Smart man, but horrible professor. Should not be teaching entry level calculus. Even as an engineering major kaper's class was horrible. Quizzes are two questions from the homework, so do the homework or at least look at the answers. He goes off on random tangents about unnecessary things. Lectures make you want to kill yourself. Don't choose him.
He looks and acts very similarly to Dr. Perry Cox from Scrubs: Not affraid to humiliate you during office hours and also insanely smart. Try to stay ahead and sit in the front of class. Definitely attend office hours and work your behind off for the final. Tests are manageable but the final separates the men from the boys. Tasso is a man.
i decided not to go to lectures, didn't buy the txbk, and went to discussion to take the quizzes which i always passed cause i took calc before. this was a waste of time bc i learned nothing, you better have at least done derivatives before day 1. i asked him how difficult calc is and he said very, unless you're me...fun dude but BORING
Tasso is an amazing professor. He is learned and interested in the subject and especially in it's applications. No matter what field you come from you will be able to find interest in his class. He works very hard to convey understanding and really interest his students. Exams and homeworks are straightforward, and he grades very fairly.
Smart Guy, good teacher if you are intesely paying attention.
Tough Class. Many points deducted on tests for small mistakes. I made a lot of stupid mistakes. First test is straightforward (AP Calc AB stuff) so try to study hard & nail it if you can. Do the practice exams, all the practice problems, and then do it all once again and if your like me you'll at least get a B.
A little strange, but he will teach until you understand. He explains what is on the final and he wants to give everyone A's so he tries hard to help you earn it.
Before entering MA 124 I was interested in math and after I wasn't interested at all. This professor is very unclear and I didn't learn much from him. I don't recommend this teacher because he ruined it for me.
He goes on random tangents about physics and higher math classes having nothing to do with the material at hand. Doesn't like to admit to mistakes during class. Explains some really minute details and then skips entire steps on the board making him hard to follow. On the upside his tests are based off of review probs and practice tests.
This is a TOUGH class, but Kaper isn't a terrible teacher. He might be better suited to engineering majors and people in higher math, though. He got distracted very easily, but if you kept from drifting off he was always very clear when he got back on topic. Tough grader on exams, but very generous with your overall grade.
Kaper explains everything clearly and in manner with the textbook! Doubt I could've gotten a better calculus prof for MA123. Period.
Tests were super easy mostly because he posts a practice exam before the test that the SAME EXACT KINDS OF QUESTIONS (format and all). He also posts an answer key to it. The material for this class is already easy, but with him as a professor i don't think it's possible to get lower than a B.
Overall a great course, though in hindsight, I didn't really need to take it (either that or it was just deafeningly easy)
pay attention in his lectures you will learn. I personally didn't like his teaching style. The class has been redesigned so that prof. cant individual help you on an exam thats not theirs(department test). The quizes are unreasonably hard, made by a another prof u never see.hw is online, you never use textbook. I dislike the class, not the subject
Teaches using examples form the book. If you miss class just read the chapter and go over the examples. Quizes and stuff in discussion are not bad if you read the textbook or did the homework online.
Awesome teacher! Best I've had!
Don't expect anything special, but at the same time a class with Kaper is a class that you will do well in if you just give him your attention during lectures. He is more than willing to help during his office hours and he answered all my questions clearly.
Tasso is the man! Very passionate about what he teaches and encourages students to come to him if they need help. The course is pretty hard but do the optional homework and you'll do very well on quizzes. Study hard for the tests.
I thought Kaper was the best of the calc teachers. He was very clear in lecture most of the time, though he did occasionally drift into a side story. Lecture was fairly straightforward and I felt prepared for tests. I went to office hours and he was very helpful there.
He was an extremely fair professor. EK102 is a half semester course, but we had many snow days this semester and he took that into consideration when it came to the final, which was 60% of the overall grade. Definitely was not an easy course, as 34 of a full semester of linear algebra course is crammed into half a semester.
kaper was a great professor for someone who has taken calculus before. he goes pretty fast but if you have taken calculus it won't be hard. if you haven't taken calculus, but can keep up with his pace, he is a very clear and concise teacher, he always explains his problems thoroughly
this class covers more than a half semester course should; they try to fit as much of a full semester linear algebra course as possible. With that said, I found it pretty interesting.
everything is crunched together in 6weeks instead of 12 lectures & homework are extremely long His lectures are clear to follow in the first 30min but then his handwriting gets messy quick and starts writing in every single empty space on the board. Overall straightforward simple class you can keep up Swear he likes writing words more than numbers
Professor Kaper is passionate about math and teaching. But I think he often fails to translate that into pleasurable class time. If you love a good lecture, don't expect to get one from him. I felt he couldn't hold class's attention, and confused people more than helped. good intentioned. he just can't help being confusing and prolix
Awesome professor. Thanks him a lot to heal my aypnia. I am able to sleep immediately. Felt really excited. I won't worry about sleeping until I take his class.
Honestly, not the most engaging of lecturers. Kind of monotone in voice and socially awkward. Heavy in lectures and includes many examples, but most derived from the textbook. Discussion quizzes are graded quite leniently and missing several classes will not hurt you at all so long as you keep up with the OPTIONAL homework.
Prof. Kaper has a unique lecture style based mostly on examples. He doesn't use any technological aid and his notes can be quite messy, so I wouldn't recommend his class to people who prefer a more structured environment. That being said, he is great at explaining tough concepts, and his homework is optional.
Literally one of the easiest class I've ever taken. As long as you do the homework and prep for the exams, you should be fine. :)
He explains the concepts in a multitude of ways to cater to all the different ways people learn. His lectures are well structured; starting off with a general overview, theory, and applications, then works through an example problem or two on the board. He can talk a little fast but if you attend lecture and do the homework problems its an easy A.
While he speaks and writes quickly during his lectures, he was really clear and I was able to stay focused. He's a really funny guy, and I would definitely recommend him.
He was clear and organised in his explanations. He cared about his students and made himself available outside of class. He wrote and spoke quickly but was clearly passionate and willing to explain concepts further and answer questions.
His lectures were a little hard for me to follow. For tests, just make sure to do the homework and review problems because the tests are very similar. If you can do all the homework and review problems the tests should be pretty easy.
Explains the principles of MA124 well enough but often goes on rants or tangents that don't make the material more comprehensible. Homework is once a week but there's a ton of it and it's due on Friday, which is a drag. If you're confident with calculus it's an easy class but if not consider another prof.
Really helpful during office hours. Clear lectures and tests are not hard.
nice guy. can be a bit disorganized at times but he's really passionate about what he does and is great at helping out students. super considerate also.
Lectures often had lots of detail and he overexplained things, so it was hard to pay attention but if you did then you would understand the topic easily. For me, I could never stay in class more than 45 of the 75 minutes because I got bored. He returned grades much faster than the other profs usually, but sometimes took a day to respond on Slack.
Very useful hints in discussion section.
Professor Kapers office hours are extremely helpful, he is great at explaining and will make sure you completely understand everything. Willing to explain every question you have. Accesible outside of class
Best math professor i have at BU. Explain hard contents very clearly. Caring. It is the first time I can understand the material in a high level math class.
The class can move pretty fast at times, and sometimes his lectures seem to be all over the place, but you can tell that he's passionate about the subject and genuinely cares about his students doing well. Go to his office hours if you need more help.
The professor is really caring and is very passionate about the subject and it shows. Though, his lectures do get pretty unorganized and often just goes all over the place. His 103 class is a joint with a couple other professors and he often teaches methods differently from the rest, so it can be confusing doing hw and comparing with peers.
Eaaaasy class. Kaper himself is a bit scatterbrained so I stopped going to lecture after a month-his class just made me more confused on topics that I had previously been secure in. Even so, I can't really complain because the class was so easy (open note exams - I managed to ace the final). Homework is tedious and each question can have 10+ parts.
Prof Kaper is very knowledgeable and knows his stuff. That being said, the lectures are quite boring and can make you drowsy. Personally, I learned everything online through videos and just went to lectures to half listen and still did fine in the class. Go to office hours, and you will do great. The class itself is pretty straightforward.
Kaper is the best professor I have had in the engineering department at BU. He is charismatic, fun to listen to, and passionate about the subject he teaches. He has the very rare ability to transmit knowledge efficiently and is also able to make the content relatable to real life topics. I strongly recommend to choose Kaper as your professor!
Professor Kaper is a really nice guy and one of the better professors for EK103, but sometimes he would go on tangents or explain things in a confusing manner. His handwriting also isn't great, but this class is so easy that you can understand everything and do really well on the exams (which you can use MATLAB on) without going to class.
Theres nothing inherently wrong with his lectures but he has a HORRIBLE tendency to ramble on and on or make strange comparisons that don't make sense like comparing a derivative to bread which make his class a little difficult to understand. You'll be fine if you watch supplementary videos
I truly believe that Professor Kaper is not only the best professor at Boston University but he is one of the best educators in the entire United States. He is a brilliant lecturer, and it's clear that he cares about his students. I've never written a review before and wasn't planning to, but I felt compelled to share my experience.
He only writes on chalkboard and doesn't provide notes so take pictures of the board. The examples are useful. His handwriting is hard to read sometimes though. If you're used to lecture style then you'll be okay but I like more interactive things and his style didn't suit me.
Useless lectures, exams were on odd and rarely discussed topics
I had an average calculus background before taking this class and I'm doing well. I do think you will struggle if you hadn't had calc before because he can go super quick in lectures, always pauses for questions, and encourages them. Very accessible outside class too.
Old school but amazing lecturer, will constantly fill up chalkboards with examples and erase them so you have to be quick with notes. Always leaves room for questions and provides in-depth, illustrated answers. Test was exactly like the lecture's examples. Very charismatic. Took Calc1 in HS but never understood Calc as well as with Kaper. Take him!
Professor Kaper is very caring and encourages everyone to ask questions. His lectures are done on a chalkboard, so expect to take a lot of notes! Lectures are not recorded, but you will have access to notes from other professors (if they post them). Most of your grade relies on your performance on weekly quizzes and exams, so make sure to study!
