I had this horrible woman for Physics 103 & 104. She was absolutely the most pitiful professor I have encountered in my 4 years at UTC and my 4 years of professional school following my time at UTC. Her english is terrible, she doesn't teach.
I came in dreading the class but she was my favorite teacher this semester. Note: I did have a 1.9 GPA semester. She likes having laughs but the class is extremely difficult. It is called physics! She definitely knows her stuff and is willing to help.
Ms. Allen seemed to be too busy with other projects to really teach a class well. She has little patience with her students and does not communicate her thoughts well. She also does not listen when a student thinks she is being unfair.
Me no speak English. Amen to that sista! She is very hard and very unclear. Good luck if you get stuck with her. She will bend your mind backwards like it never has been before.
she always seemed to be too busy to help with anything out of class...online homework assignments were nearly impossible to do well on because they only allowed one answer, the right answer in a different form cost you your grade
I dropped the class in a week, becuase i realized i couldnt learn from a teacher that spoke terrible english. And the online assignments are a pain, avoid her at all costs and take Dr. Wang if you can
Terrible!
This class was horrible she made fun of all of us in case and would evade answering questions by saying well it is only one point on the homework don't do it.
I am a grad student now, so I've had a lot of profs in my school career...this one is the worst ever. Avoid her class at all costs. She will call you a stupid american when you don't understand a problem, she will tell you her 8 year old is smarter than you, she will expect you to know math topics that were not prereqs for the class.
She doesn't like stupid people.

Hardest teacher ever. Says she wants to help but she really wants to fail everyone. Highest exam grade in 60's and if you even want to understand....you might ass well forget it.
she is hard, but fair, she goes out of her way for students, but doesn't tolerate stupidity or a sense of entitlement. she expects hard work and rewards that. I learned a great deal about physics. If you want an easy grade avoid her, if you want to learn she is great.
she is a terrible teacher. I didn't learn anything from her
Avoid at all costs.

Terrible teacher. Refuses to help, I am a 3.5+ GPA student and my first test was a 14, out of 100! Constantly insults engineers and studnets in general, smells bad, rude, makes everything ten times harder than it should be. As bad as it is I still came out with a good grade, the stress was not worth it though, take this class from Dr. Wang.
Very hard and not really helpful in teaching... If you have to take her you can get by.. just a little stressful
She is a very horrible woman. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She doesn't like to answer students' questions..she shows no mercy at all. Her class doesn't clear at all, I am confused through her half semester..
The worst class i have ever takne, you cannot understand her half the time, you are forced to read the book and send answered questioned over blackboard and do the stupid texas homework. UTC has the worst physics department in the world, if you live in Chattanooga, take physics at Chatt State.
I understood physics in highschool and enjoyed it even though I had to teach myself the whole year. In Dr. Allen's class, I was lost. Her tests are long and hard and I could not understand a word she said. Luckily, she was pregnant and Dr. Wang took over half way through the semester. That brought my grade up. If you have her GO TO THE FREE TUTORS!
good teacher
Tries to teach by repeating material from the book. She avoids answering direct questions by writing derivations on the board. Not an effective teacher, her only concern is research on her precious silicon. Be prepared to do work on your own, this class can be a challenge due to the material; sort of an intro to quantum mechanics.
I took this class previously with another professor and could not get it. Dr. Allen has helped tremendously. I actually enjoy physics now. She can get off topic, and laughs a lot at strange things, but she will help if you ask. I think sometimes there is an issue with her understanding questions posed by students, but just try again, she'll help
She is a pretty useless teacher because she isn't able to show students how to do the problems. She spends most of her time deriving and combining the equations than actually helping u learn the material. Her tests are especially tough because she is unpredictable. Just hope that you are smarter than the rest of the class to benefit from the curve.
She is a tough physics teacher, however, she does try to help when asked. Painful online homework..my least favorite class..I'm a 3.8 gpa student.
She makes no effort to hide the fact that it is a hard class. She'll tell you that up front. Or maybe she's letting herself off the hook for being a horrible teacher. She knows her stuff, but can't get it across. Her math has no possible pattern to follow. But she does try to be helpful. Just try your best. That's all you can expect in her class.
She is absolutely terrible, u will not understand what shes saying or what she means. AVOID HER and you'll thank yourself for it later
She's friendly, but the textbook is absolutely horrible and she doesn't do any work nor does she read ahead or really understand the material. Book costs $250 and is far worse than the free ones you can find on Google. Most of my friends who don't have a great trigonometry background seem to suffer through this class. UTC = fail.
Dr. Allen is a wonderful person who truly tries to help you. and she is an excellent physicist. TERRIBLE teacher. she just doesn't know how to teach. Some ppl just don't. she knows her stuff and is brilliant, but a god awful teacher. If you are looking to major in physics then def get to know her, she knows her stuff, she'll make you think.
A lot of ppl complain a/b her but she gives a TON of extra credit!! She cracks me up in class. She is very helpful. If u do all the extra credit and half-way try, u should be fine. Physics isn't easy, nor easy to teach. U can't be unrealistic in expectations of ur prof. They are experts, not eduation buffs. It kinda sucks no matter who u have :)
Dr. Allen is a terrible teacher. Her class made me hate Physics! Class could have been interesting, but she made it so hard that it seemed almost impossible. Does not grade fairly, and it's not easy to see why exactly you missed points. She does very few examples in class, but expects you to know how to do the problems on the test "her way."
IF YOU ARE NOT A PHYSICS MAJOR DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!! She runs through the material EXTREMELY fast and her examples are not clear. Her tests are THE WORST!!! The problems covered on the test were problems that we never practiced in class. This is by far the worst 100 level class that I have ever taken. This class was TERRIBLE!!!!!!
Excellent physicist, not a very good teacher. Avoid unless you have no choice.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. Take Physics at Chatt State! She is the WORST teacher I have EVER had! The only reason people pass this class is because she gives extra credit. She gives so much extra credit because without it, MANY students would fail. If you have to give that much extra credit in order for people to pass, you know something is wrong!!!
RUN AWAY! Dr. Allen is very intelligent in her field. That being said, she is a HORRIBLE professor. I would have put off a semester to not take her. Introductory Physics should be bearable but she makes it not. She gives a ton of extra credit, but that is because her average on tests(200 pts) WITH about 60pts extra credit are still around 40%.
STAY AWAY!!!! She has a bad Russian accent and expects you to learn everything about every chapter before the lecture. Very bad teaching style and not very helpful. Half the class dropped, and most who stayed received low C's due to curved tests. DO NOT TAKE!
She's obviously intelligent, but very shrill and almost totally incomprehensible. My advisor described her as "not very cuddly." If at all possible, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
She is a brilliant physicist; however, she is a miserable teacher. She assumes knowledge that isn't prerequisite, she runs through the material at a lightning fast pace, she rarely helps outside of class, and her tests are over an excessive amount of material. I'm a 3.8 GPA math + engineering dual major and had a miserable time in the class. Avoid.
I have an extensive background in calculus and sciences and I had a very hard time getting ahold of her teaching style. She moved through the material way too fast. Also, she could not understand how her students did not understand the material, a bad trait for a teacher.
great teacher. very easy on the eyes
Dr. Allen is ridiculous. I had an average of about 95% going into to lab final, and she asked a bunch of questions on the final that never came up in lab or lecture! Her stupid final cause me to drop a letter grade.
Absolutely terrible, and she's the only one who teaches the class. Changed my major just so I could drop and never take again.
I finally got it.great teacher.
PHYS1030L. She is more helpful then the TA that was there. Don't know who was grading the lab reports, but they are graded with EXTREME detail. Labs are fairly easy to do, but the pre-lab and discussion questions are a pain. If you have no choice; answer all questions thoroughly and specifically, pay attention to sig figs.
she is lovely and knows her stuff. makes it fun
Extremely difficult to understand and moved through the course material at breakneck speeds. Unclear directions, almost unbearable teaching style (requires students to answer "Yes" after almost every statement she makes
Extremely difficult teacher. Pretends subject is matter-of-fact simple. Moves too quickly through the chapters while forcing you to understand how she algebraically derives formulas and is terrible with simplifying how she got to her end result. Worried that I would pass and have a 4.0 aside from her class.
She knows her stuff, can derive material from first principles. which is awesome
Extremely difficult teacher!! She goes through the material way to fast. She is very smart and nice, but she does not know how to convey the material to the students. There are multiple quizzes but only a midterm and final. Also, there is online homework and a paper.DO HOMEWORK IN THE BOOK! You'll be better off teaching yourself!
This is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. She flies through the material and expects you to know the basics of everything. AVOID TATIANA. I have As in all my other classes and currently have a D in her class. Something does not add up.
Physics is tough. Dr. Allen makes tough tests that reflect that. BUT she curves at the end for a normal class distribution. Stay in it and keep fighting! Even with low scores on the tests you can still get an A/B. Do your hw to understand examples and KNOW what the equations mean, don't just plug in randomly. Good luck!
She has awful teaching skills and instead of having the class participate she just does the entire problem and ask at the end, "do we get this?" She basically forces you to say yes and her methods make it very difficult to actually learn. IF you ever thought you enjoyed physics she will ruin that for you. If you can, avoid this teacher.
I think Dr. Allen is quite underrated on this site. I'm sure many people here expect her to teach you everything you need during class. She won't. She can't. Don't expect to understand it then. Guys, you've got to put in hours looking at the material outside of class. Go to her office and ask questions for crying out loud. She'll always help you.
I actually really like Tatiana. It is a tough class for sure but just study! Homework really helps, and you can go to her for questions. I went to her office hours a lot and it helped me not only in learning the material, but to have her know you is a big plus. Long story short, she has high expectations, but it's not too unreasonable. She's cool!
Most students seem to just ignore her during the lectures, and only attend so their participation grade doesn't fall. Her teaching is terrible. Her English isn't clear. If you don't understand, she becomes frustrated. She assumes many tenets of physics are common sense, and won't explain them, but will put them on tests. Avoid.
This professor, if you can call her that, is a Russian physicist who speaks horrible English and expects you to have a photographic memory like her. She does one question per topic and then expects you to be an expert on it. After she does a single question she requires that you say you understand, even if you don't. Terrible excuse for a professor
Dr. Allen knows Physics extremely well, however, she does not know how to communicate her knowledge effectively to students. I enjoyed her personality, but learned nothing from her lectures. Everything I learned came from reading the text. She would make a great researcher, but seriously needs to take some classes on how to teach. Avoid!
Dr. Allen was a great professor. She does move fairly quickly but there is a lot of material to cover in 1030. Her accent is very pronounced but its in no way confusing. She did write certain letters in weird ways so they looked like numbers. The paper is an easy AB, the quizzes are very hard but the Exams are not. Lab is also very easy.
Dr. Allen is awesome! Physics is very hard.
You will not learn a lot from her lectures. You MUST read the textbook and work practice problems to do well in this class. Homework and quizzes are very tough, but the exams are all multiple-choice and super easy compared to the quizzes. She goes through the material in class VERY fast and in little detail. I repeat, you MUST read to do well!
If you don't read the book you will fail. Her lectures don't cover many of the important concepts that will be on the quizzes. Online HW and quizzes are tough, but the tests are a breeze (multiple choice) compared to the HW. The research paper is a joke. All in all, you can pass with little effort, but if you want a good grade, read the textbook.
She is awesome. I didn't know that physics would open my eyes to the world around me.
She is a nice enough person. But she doesn't care anymore. If you go to her for help, she hurries you out of her office saying that other students are getting it, so you should too. She is lazy, & can't grasp why students don't just magically understand physics like she does. She doesn't know how to teach it. But she's the dept head & tenured.
She has a heavy accent, goes through material super quick, better off learning from the book and SI sessions than her. Still nice lady, fairly easy class. Easy quizzes, easy enough exams.
Absolute worst teacher at UTC. She expects you to easily grasp physics and the concepts she goes over. She gives quizzes from the HW problems in the book, but picks the most tricky ones. Her tests are basically concept based. Her lecture is pointless. Still can pull a B in her class because of curves and extra credit. Don't expect to learn anything
On a personal level I love Dr. Allen. She has a sense of humor and she is incredibly intelligent. She has a PHD in physics and mathematics. The course lectures cover strong derivation of ideas, but very little when it comes to actually solving problems .You better be up to par on your mathematics. There is very little actual calculus however.
WORST professor I have ever had! Very smart and nice lady, but a terrible teacher. Does not know how to simplify information to help students. Her lectures do not match her tests and she is not helpful. Prepare to read the book to learn everything. If you work hard a B or maybe A is possible. But it will require a lot of time.
DO NOT TAKE HER! she does not simplify the lectures at all! you basically have to teach yourself. She is extremely smart, but not the best teacher. The only good thing that i can say is that she curves her exams a little.
Run why you can! I refuse to take physics 2 next semester because she is the only one teaching it! Horrible professor, thats all I need to say.
Physics is hard no matter how you look at it. but you can learn in her class. read material before class you will do well
Does not teach at all. Expects you to learn the material by yourself. She only answers the question you ask in lecture. She is very smart and understands what she is doing, but does not know how to teach it to her student in a way they can learn it.
Allen is a wonderful professor. Physics is a hard concept. It takes a lot of outside work and practice to pass, but she is there to help you the entire semester. If you do your part reading and engage in class, you will do well. Go into the class thinking, "It will be so cool and enlightening to understand physics!!" Then stay dedicated.
She tries really hard but, like a lot of these comments say, she does not know how to teach to beginners. She constantly says or shows us things that go way over our heads. Also her suggestion for studying for the exams is to look at the test bank which is about 50 pages per chapter. Would NOT recommend or take again.
Dr. Allen has a thick accent. She does extremely long confusing equations in class. I go on Chegg to figure out how to work the problems. I kept getting this one question wrong so I went to her after class, she said she would look at it if I email her. I emailed her the problem, she NEVER replied or changed my grade. It's been almost 2 months.
One of the worst professors Ive had at UTC. if you can avoid taking her I highly recommend it.
Dr. Allen is the worst professor I have had during my time at UTC. Throughout the course of the lab students find almost random points taken off with no explanation, a surprising resistance to helping the students when they ask questions, and very vague lab instructions that often require more explaining. The study guide doesn't match the final!
Let me start by saying I am a 4.0 student. Dr. Allen is without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. Our class meetings were sad excuses for lectures and her assigned hw and practice were nowhere near what the test questions were like. I am not sure how she is allowed to be a professor. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU CAN!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Please save your GPA and sanity and take this class with another professor. As an A student, I can tell you this: Physics is not a hard subject but she makes it the worst thing on this planet. Her exams do not reflect her homework at all. Not to mention, she does not lecture. She also never answers her emails or questions.
Dr. Allen is an excellent researcher, she is not an educator. Dr. Allen understands Physics at an extremely high level and because of this is incapable of teaching people who do not find Physics intuitive. She struggles to explain concepts in a way that is digestible for most people, can be condescending, and seems to grade completely arbitrarily.
Have to pay for Wileyplus which is around 80 bucks. The HW is fairly easy but she'll make phys much more confusing than it needs to be. 4 tests (lowest is dropped) along with HW. Only positive was it's entirely online.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This has been the worst class I've ever taken and I am a senior. I just know physics is not as hard as she made it seem. Her exams are totally different from any material in class and she does not offer ways to study for them. Her lectures are pointless and she just calls students out and brushes their questions off.
If you have a question, don't ask her. Her exams are ridiculously difficult. The last exam we took top score was a 30. I've never failed a class until her. 5-20 hours a week. What's bad is I know the material fairly well but Allen offered nothing but a video on how to study better when I asked for help. Her hw and exams had diff probs completely.
Attendance mandatory. She speaks super fast. Her tests are nothing like the textbooks eeee forced to buy.
Try to avoid her. I had never failed a class until I had her. The tests were nothing like the labs, And this was an online course. It was tough for me to pass the physics labs online. Also, she is very strict regarding labs, as she will take off points if you don't have the exact answer.
Avoid her as much as possible. I had never failed a class until she came up. The examinations had nothing to do with the laboratories, and this was an online course. It was difficult for me to pass the online physics labs. She is also quite severe about labs, and she will deduct points if you don't have a precise answer.
I put in hours of studying into this class but did not do good at all. Her lectures are not informative since they typically are just example problems, but she doesn't go through how to actually start or do it. She basically assumes you know how to do it already and is reviewing, and the textbook does the same thing. Her exams are short but hard.
Avoid her at all costs because I had to retake the Physics 2 lab course because she gave no feedback on lab assignments and what to study for when it comes to tests or exams.
very hard to understand what she says. Is not good at explaining concepts and expects you to understand immediately.
Amazing human being, super sweet, but I didn't like how she taught the class at all. I'm lucky I even got a D in this class. Her teaching style was rather disorganized and I cannot emphasize this enough- be prepared to drown in homework. Stay on top of it. To add, the way she graded tests confused me horribly.
She is a horrible teacher, explain things in a very difficult way. Avoid this professor.
This woman made me seriously consider changing my entire career path so I could drop her class. Incredibly bad teacher, with absolutely no clue how to teach an introductory physics class. Everything she says goes straight over your head, and you will be lucky if you spend less than 10 hours a week on homework assignments.
She works far too quickly for the experience level that she is teaching. As someone who never has taken physics before, she does not slow down or thoroughly explain anything that she does. I'm personally a visual learner and a lot of what she does IS visual, but it still doesn't help. I found that watching youtube videos on each topic helped a lot.
She's a very nice teacher and a good person im sure. However, It was hard to understand her lectures most of the time. she would be all over the place really only skimming the slides. She always tell's us to read the text book or practice at home but we can't even do that because its hard to understand her teaching style.
run. hide. fight.
Would not recommend this professor. Her lectures seemed to glaze over the core concepts and would eventually devolve into watching her work problems on the screen while she mumbled to herself without really explaining anything. Her organization in the online homework portal was awful. Wiley plus software she uses also sucks. Avoid at all costs.
She does not simplify topics enough to be teaching an intro level class. I came to every lecture because I was told it would be counted toward my grade (it wasn't), but I never learned anything from her. She grazed over topics and mumbled to herself all of class rather than really teaching. I honestly never knew what was going on in lecture. So bad
just wait and take the class next year twin
