she explains very well
Good teacher
never take this teacher ever
good teacher, OK exams...but no curve >_<
She's The GREATEST teacher! Very Inspirational and helpful. I learned a lot.
Best teacher I've *ever* had. Office hours kept until all questions answered.
NEVER AGAIN!
Doesn't collect hw. Quizes weekly. Explains material well, answers questions. *Bad time management, explaination of new material isn't started soon enough and doesn't end on time
Her grading is hard. She expects accuracy. No marks or signs abuse. She's very nice, very helpful...Help students learn. She's easy if you take your time to learn for the quiz and midterm. Recommend..good teacher if you study...
great teacher, if you keep up with the homework. incredibly nice and helpful. if you put in effort, she puts in a ton of effort to help you succeed.
she is very nice and helpful if you ask questions. no curve on quiz or exam. no HW.Need to study to pass tho.
screw those who say "never take her again." you must be lazy in order to fail that class. She is very nice and helpful, and i mean very helpful!!!!! get her for god sakes...all u to do is study for the quiz and exam...
failed her class twice! ...her F got me DQed.. she ruined my life!
I ended up getting a C in her class, but if I had done more of the homework problems I could have easily gotten a B. The problems she chooses for the tests are not the easiest problems, but not the hardest ones either. She's good, I recommend her.
THE BEST!! got an A without curving..don't need to turn in HW, but you will regrad if you don't do it. quizzes are from HW problems, midterms are okay. Final is a bit tricky but not comprehensive..good! recommended
Shubin teaches everything you need to know for her exam, and most probs come from the book. Her teaching is very visual and that help A LOT. One of the best math teachers I've had for a long time. Got an A and barely did hw, but it's recommended though.
Great teacher. She explains things well in great detail. I took her class and passed it. Even though she is a great teacher, she is a hard grader. However she was very helpful, if I didn't go to her office hours I probably would not have passed her class.
VERY HARD! she even marks you wrong if you forget a tiny little detail. crazy little b***h. failed me with a F. dont take her please!!!
VERY COOL TEACHER. GIVES OUT A LOT OF EASY EXTRA CREDIT TOO.
Good teacher. Tests and quizes are basically problems from the book. HARD grader and marks you wrong for the smallest mistakes but easy to earn ALL LOST POINTS back through extra credit in office hours. I recommend her.
She may seem like a b***h at first but stick it out. She is a good teacher. HARD grader but good teacher who gives alot of extra credit. I couldn't have passed without it.
Probably the best professor I've ever had. Period.
Grades really hard on tests/quizzes. Gives lots of points for participation and gives u opportunity to make up lost points. well versed in calculus.
one of the two best teachers I've ever had. has great concern for students and wants nothing more than for you to learn the material. Be careful, though. She will NOT baby you and grades tests fairly hard, but gives lots of extra credit for participation.
somewhat an easy teacher. shows concern by giving extra credit. tests are not too hard if you study a bit and did most if not all the homework.
Here is a woman who truly cares about her students. Not only is she good at teaching her material, but she is pretty much always available in her office hours for help. She also allows her students to make up lost points.
best professfor I have ever had. Give lots of extra credit from participation.
Easiest teacher I had for the semester. Gives out lots of extra credit, and very willing to explain concepts.
easy teacher, but very strict on grading tests. marks off for wrong notation so do it her way. problems from quizes come straight from homework so make sure you do it. she lets you make up points in office hours. gives extra credit in class.
Easy instructor. Provides great examples-good to know for midterm and final! Midterms are ok, but if you make a simple, or stupid error, marks you off a lot and each prob. is about 30-50 points, so be careful. Overall, nice and easy.
Great teacher. If you do all the homework and attend class regularly, this should be a cakewalk for you. She really cares about her students and knows what shes talking about. Take her class and you'll be well off in the future.
Dr. Shubin is an excellent professor. If you really wants to learn the fundation of calculus, take her. You will have to work for your grade but if you put in the work, you will earn the grade. She's fair in her grading - I strongly recommend her.
She is very helpful and gives a lot of extra credit. Overall a good teacher.
She is the best.knows her subject really well.it shows in class.very helpful in her office hours.i love geometry, thanks to her.
Lectures are very helpful. If you pay attention, you'll learn something every day. Hw almost every night, quizzes with problem(s) taken right from hw. VERY helpful during class/office hours. All pts lost can be made up. Gives lots of e/c. I learned a ton. Would take her again in a heartbeat.
I think u wrong..If you are so lazy and just try to pass by Cal, then take other prof. If you willing to learn and pass with a confident grade then take her. She's helpful if you come to her office. I guess some people are to lazy to go ask for help, and hence fail the class. Open you mouth ans ask!
I can't emphasize how bad this teacher is. Very ****, mean, and unclear. I did not learn anything from her. She is the worst teacher on CAMPUS!! She is very very ****!! I have 3.8 GPA, but didn't do too well in her class because she is extremely prejudice. I hope she gets fired!!
man, she doesn't listen to me, she doesn't listen to how i get a wrong answer, she just tells u to shut up and try to figure out what she is trying to explain... hella stubborn, i would not take her again, but for some reason, i got a B when i thought i got a C or C-... keep that in mind =P
I think Shubin is an OK teacher. She's a fair grader and she helps you if you ask for help.I think that the only problem with her is that she doesn't understand what students ask in class and sometimes she doesn't let you finish your question and start giving weird answers. But overall good teacher.
she is the best professor I've ever seen. I am doing my PhD. someday, i will be a professor and she will be my role model.
Shubin gives a lot of EC points if you correct the mistakes she makes on the board when doing problems/notes. HOWEVER if you forget to put certain notation on your tests... minus points. Quiz every week, and are based off of 1 RANDOM question on HW (usually). Take advantage of her office hours!
Take her if you care about math. She's very strict with notations! But very easy with points!! Cool Teacher. Highly recommended!!
You ask her a question in class, she'll solve about 4/7 of it, then say, "And you know how to do the rest." WHAT? Office hours are somewhat helpful, but she's pretty unclear during that time as well. Her proofs will drive you crazy unless you look online for the answers or in some other college geometry book in the library.
She's a great Calculus professor. Though I'm no longer in the Math major, she's one of the professors that stood out in my mind today. I took her back in Fall of 2002 and she's a great professor. She's very helpful and if you do your homework and go to class: you should do well. I love taking Math 31 with her. It was really fun.
Yeah, she can be mean and picky on tests, but she's a great teacher. Her hardcore attitute kinda scares the class into paying close attention to lecture, so you won't be falling asleep or anything. And her make-up policy is the best. Definitely take advantage of it. If you actually want to learn Calculus, Shubin's the professor you want to take.

hated this teacher. very picky on trivial information. i had other classes during her office hours and she wouldn't make an appt. with me so i could get some help. horrible teacher, and her accent is annoying as hell...
doesn't get to the point until like the last 10mins of class, people there are either sleeping, playing games, or passing notes around, and her accent doesn't make it any better... coooooooor-in-ates(coordinates)
I fall asleep in every lecture. She never gets to the point until the very end of class when everyone starts to leave, and she spends time proving things that don't really need to be proven. Her accent is hilarious; it reminds me of the Depressed Persian Tow Truck Man from MADTV.
Like the other said, does not get to the point until the very end, if ever. It's stupid, if you took any math in HS, she's reteaching it. I sit in lecture doing hw listening to music. I got more out of HS math. Her and her aids do not communicate very much and activity contradicts the lecture. I am doing well in the class, no thanks to her.
One of the best math professors I've ever had. She is really good at explaining things. Just make sure you do the hw the same day she assigns it and you will get an A and learn a lot.
You'll either love her or hate her. Hopefully, you'll love her because I h@ted her. She's terrible on partial credit. Has her favorites, and her least favorites. I was her least favorite. Oh, she's also ****. She didn't teach me anything and made some racial jokes. Calc. II is tough so try to get someone better.
Great teacher. Loved her. Mid-terms are hard...lots of points lost for misuse of notation. Overall an awesome teacher. Really nice, and willing to help. Always welcomes you to office hours to make up quizzes or mid-terms. Really a friendly person.
She is a nice person, once you can understand her thick accent. She really does everything she can to get your grade up because her tests crazy hard.
Good teacher, concerned for her students. Tests are really hard but she allows you to make up any wrong answers on midterms. She is much better than Professor Blockus who I had the previous semester for the same class.
Didnt have much of a choice but to take her cuz i heard blockus was harder but the truth is shubins test were more challenging and she was very picky with notation. shes kinda freindly but i didnt like her..got a C+ but i worked my ass off for it making up the points, and dont forget to do it!!

3 Midterms, Final, 500 points/Lab 500 points. She was definately very helpful in that you could see her in office hours (she has an abundance of office hours), let you make up problems off midterms if you got them wrong-(she would give you a tougher one during office hours, and if you go it right, you got full credit) All in all dedicated teacher
dr. shubin is very very smart. like many profs, she is extremely smart.but shes also an amazing TEACHER.plus she cares that students LEARN.always willing to answer questions, clarify,& allows students to prove knowledge & gain points back towards grade.highly highly recommend.i wish she was doing calc1 this semster.DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!
HORRIBLE!!! I dont care what they tell you!! Shes very hard to understand because of accent, is terribly boring, and tests/quizzes are very tricky! However, she does offer tutoring during office hours, can learn your name IF you participate, but overall not a good teacher, especially if its your first time taking Pre-Cal!
quizzes daily but r exact prblms from hw night b4. u can ask ?'s on any problem b4 taking the quiz, so u can get a problem that was just explained. lets u make up points uve lost on midterms & quizzes. so u can get 100% if u go 2 her office hrs & ask 2 redo problems. if u suck @ math u have plenty of opportunities for an A. no excuse 2 fail
The only thing really needed in this class is effort. That means do all the homework and go makeup points during her office hours. I get C's and lower in the tests, but I did all the hw and quizzes and went to get points during her office hours and ended up with a A-. I didnt even study too much for the tests.
She is the best teacher i have ever had
She's awesome! I failed the midterm but still got over 105% total grade.
DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER she doesnt listen to you the only way to pass her class is to go to her office hours but if you have a class durring that time your screwed. she doesnt teach she justs gives you homework and then expects you to get it dont take horrible teacher
attendance is mandatory, there is homework and quiz everyday. class is 50 mins, going over homework takes about 30, taking the quiz takes about 10, most of the time there is only about 10 minutes to go over new material. you have to do all the homework and quizzes all add up. only way to recover is office hours. learning is independent really.
I always went to her office but she wouldn't explain anything & tell me to look at examples. She isn't very encouraging. I'm a math major and actually considered changing my major after her class. (I didn't, though) She isn't organized, so you can't be too sure of what your grade is. I got a C+, but it took A LOT of work- be prepared to work!
This woman is a witch. Her class was the hardest class I've ever taken. However, if you're willing to work your whole semester's butt off, you MIGHT do well. Her office hours are always popular, and if you feel like waiting for over an hour and a half near/during finals, then take her. Otherwise, try your best to avoid her.
they previous comments are exactly what i want to say. this woman can't teach at all! she doesn't even teach! she only lectures on the basic concept but doesn't go into deep details. she gives less examples from the book. avoid her if you don't want to fail.
One of the best Calculus professors in SJSU. She will take extra personal time to help you if it is needed. Go to class, you will find out at the end that it was worth it, when you get your good grade (if you show effort). She explains really well, and is extremely helpful! Again if you are interested in math at all, you should take her class.
More than half of the class couldn't do the homework including me. Don't expect more than 15 mins of lecture (because the rest is homework review).
The fact of the matter is, if you don't get the grade you want from her class, then you're just lazy and don't deserve a degree. She lets you make up ALL the lost points (even if you lost one point) by going to her office hour and making it up. GROW UP AND DO THE WORK, and get a free A.
She's spends almost the entirety of class discussing the previous nights hw. Hw is assigned everyday and is collected each thursday or a quiz is given. Half of the class was failing, the other half of the class was taking it for the second time. Avoid her if you can.
Yes, the class is based around the homework but the problems are carefully selected and are relevant to the learning of the subject. She's always available to help you with with any homework even if it is your second or third attempt at a problem. She's not very organized and doesn't keep good track of grades. However she takes the time to get to k
Yes, she will make you work. Lets just say that if you at least get a C, you learned something. Take her if you care to learn.
She is a nice lady but her teaching style is not for people who need to be shown examples. She says do HW and she goes over maybe 2 out of 6+ problems from Hw the night before. Her exams are hit and miss and she is VERY picky about notation and small details. You take her have strong knowledge about pre-calc and you will do ok.
Really hard to understand. Doesn't really help when you go to her office hours and makes you feel bad for going there in the first place. The one thing good this teacher does is let you make up points for midterm, but even then, she gives purposely hard problems.
I dont like her lectures at all. but i like how she gives us another chance to make up all the points we've missed on our midterms, quizzes, and even hw's. I have an A+ in her class because i came in to her office almost everyday just to make up all the points i've missed. she's really fair...
Hard to understand her lectures at times. Gives medium to hard problems on midterms and quizzes. Lets you make up missed problems in her office hours.Gives you lots of chances for extra credit. She's very fair and challenges each and every one of her students. Teaching style is different, with hw taking up most of the class. Good teacher overall
Look up the word "passion" and her name should be there. She is the reason I went from liking math to loving it. Put in the time and effort and her class will change you forever. She is not the easiest teacher, but if you survive her class you will know she will give you a world class education. She is the Best of the Best!
She does have four office hours a week, but it's hard to get in.
Hands down best math professor I've ever met. Gives out homework most nights but never more than 5 - 9 problems. Don't be afraid of the work, ask questions, show up. She's even more lenient than normal for students that actively participate. Extremely helpful and understanding. Highly recommend to anyone that wants to truly learn calculus.
Great teacher very hard to fail unless you really want it. Lets you make up every exam and every homework twice. Do not leave it to the end though cuz there will be a campout
Good teacher. She allows you to make up every point of her class. You can make up missed questions on tests, quizzes, and homework. Plus she gives extra credit. If you don't pass it's on you. I got a B- after making up test questions right before final.
SHE HAS THE BIGGEST ATTITUDE PROBLEM EVER. it's hard to ask her a question cause she starts yelling at you&gets rude. The only thing good is that you can get problems made up when you get them wrong. But overall, you hardly learn in her class. If you ask her a question, she drives 3 other probs to answer one so u get lost half way.
She goes too fast. She likes to do problems the LONGEST way possible. She makes up problems at the top of her head, which are HARD. She does let you make up points in her office hours for midterms. GET THOSE DONE AS SOON AS YOU GET YOUR TEST BACK. She was okay but i wouldn't take her again.
I had this professor for math 30/31 and let me just say if u don't go to lecture for this professor u will fail this class! She will make a mental note of if. Trust me knowing her on a first name basis is key an she will let u make problems up from ur ****ty exams in order to enhance ur score u can even aim for 100 but if u don't show up to class and only go it offers the she will probably give u really hard problems. I wouldn't be in differentials today if it weren't for her!
free extra credit! ALOT
Prof. Shubin is great! she gives a lot of extra credit and gives extra credit points if you go to her office. She explains things during her office hours, and she 's very nice and helpful. I would take her again for Math 31.
Loved Shubin. Assigned homework every night, but could easily be finished in an hour max (around 5-10 problems a night). Gives you multiple opportunities for extra credit. Really enjoys math and knows what she's talking about. Only thing I can knock her on is that she'll dock you points for not doing a problem the way she wants you to do it.
You need to actually study for her class in order to pass. She focuses on notation and will deduct one point off your midterm for each and every abuse abuse of notation. She doesn't curve but she gives a lot of extra credit if you put the time into going to her office hours and attending the lectures. Overall she's a brilliant professor.
Be prepared to study like you never studied before! Professor Shubin was one of the toughest math professors I have ever had! Quizzes are every Friday of the semester, where you need to do the math her way of suffer NOTATION ABUSE! Trust me, notation abuse almost killed my grade. Always go to office hours because she gives extra credit each visit.
Dr. Shubin was one of the best professors I have ever encountered at sjsu. She cares about the students and wants you to LEARN! If you are having trouble, go see her during Office Hours and she will help you out. She is the reason why I continued in math when the going got tough. She will make you work, but you earn the grade you deserve!
BEST MATH PROFESSOR ever! I have never met any professor that is as passionate as her about the subject she teaches. Really cares about the success of her students and sincerely wants them to understand the subject. Many opportunities for extra credit. I retook this class with her and actually passed! I have confidence in doing math now!
She is really lenient and caring by trying her best to make her student pass by doing midterm replacement, giving extra credits, and curving the final exam. However, she may be strict on notation error on quizzes and midterms(1 point deduction each error). Every week, you either take a quiz or return the homework. Overall, she is a great professor!
She can be difficult to understand in beginning of the semester. However, as time passes and you begin to settle in, you will be able to understand her lessons, since she does problems by her own methods. Overall, a caring professor that wants you to get the possible grade based on your capabilities. Take advantage of the extra credit she gives.
The grading is pretty straight forward. She either collects your four homeworks, or you're given a quiz every week. Class is 80% of the time just going over last night's homework. She's really, really, good at explaining stuff and the study guide is just like the midterms. FYI: She doesn't post any grades on canvas, so you'll have to email her.
Do not listen to any of these reviews unless it says she is not helpful at all. My friend took this class and she was the worst. I can't believe professors are allowed to be like her. It seems as if she isn't here to teach students at all. Why be a professor if you're not willing to help students? Yeah, not sure. Maybe ask her, she should know
Her class is overall pretty easy if you do the homework and pay attention when shes writing notes on the board. She's pretty old fashioned and used a chalk board my semester and her quizzes are based on a coin flip so you can either turn in your homework as a quiz or take an actualy quiz. The quizzes should turn out easy tho if you do the homework.
She is a great professor, but MATH31 is a hard class. Every Friday, she either collects the week's homework or gives you a quiz based on it. So if you do the homework, you can expect to do fairly well. She goes over the homework every class meeting and explains the concepts well. Gives a lot of extra credit, so be sure to participate!
She is different to the other Calculus professors at the school because she assigns homework from the textbook, not Web Assign. She gives a lot of chances for extra credit. If you didn't do well on the first midterm, you can replace the grade with the second one if you did better. The study guides for the midterms are just like the midterm itself.
I found Shubin's lectures not that great, so I had to watch Youtube videos on the topic. Her homework is based on the textbook, which you can find free online and the answers too. Every Friday, there is either a quiz or she collects the homework. Her tests are usually based on the study guide so study that.
She's tough but a good teacher, I understood the content with a little bit of practice. Sometimes you have to do some outside research/work on your own but it is minimal. Not sure if she retired after this semester so my review might be useless but just in case, go to as many lectures as possible. One bad thing is that she doesn't use canvas.
