He puts very little effort into the class outside of his decent lectures. Homework is online and students must pay a heavy fee to access it. The online homework is obsolete. Simple mistakes like formatting issues will be marked wrong. Hatase himself is unhelpful with homework issues as he will do little more then tell you to write the manufacture.
He is extremely entertaining, but that does not help you pass the class. He is terrible with explaining things and is constantly making mistakes, not only on the powerpoint for every lecture, but also the exams. I attended every class and my only saving grace was attending the math study tables.
Entertaining professor although sometimes it is difficult to understand because he mumbles but I look forward to attending lecture everytime.
He knows math but can't explain very well. He says he will curve the grade after the final. If you wanna understand math don't EVER take it with him
His lectures are very clear and he plans them well, including a brief review of antiderivatives before the definite integral section (never seen an integral calc class do that, it was helpful). However he doesn't do much to help out of class. He plays with his hair almost constantly which is really distracting!
He sometimes goes over things too quickly and makes small mistakes in his lecture slides. However, he is always willing to explain things further if you ask questions during lecture or attend his office hours.
If you would like to understand math, do not take him. He goes over things really quickly and is always confusing. When i needed help, he would usually tell me what i should do, but he would never go through things in detail. He is horrible
His lectures are hard to understand, his exams are REALLY short, he is unhelpful, and he mumbles and his accent is hard to understand. Only saving grace was already knowing a lot of the material.
Horrible professor. Can't understand. Tests aren't relevant to material covered. Mumbles. Makes lots of mistakes. Jumps around allot.
Went through material too fast, not the best person to be able to explain what were doing in class
Awful teacher. Has an accent you cannot understand at all. When students ask questions he is not helpful whatsoever.
Lectures are all very organized and available to print and bring to class. There is a quiz every single class (go to class--10% of your grade). The exams are crazy hard. Use the book problems on the midterms to help you study and get as many points on the midterms as you can because the final is beyond frustratingly hard. Don't know how I passed.
Do yourself a favor and do not take any classes with him. His accent makes it impossible to understand what he is saying. His exams are extremely hard. I am also finding out that he did not cover some material that is useful in Math 252. I worked like mad to get a C- just to learn that I have to take this class again.
Try to avoid this teacher. His accent makes him really hard to understand, and when students ask questions he never seems to understand what they're asking. Also, he went really slow in the beginning then sped through hard stuff at the end, but didn't teach stuff that was assumed we learned in 252. Didn't seem to enjoy teaching at all.
Never gives examples and reads his notes straight off the projector and puts them online. Hard to understand. Honestly the worst math teacher I ever had
Do not take this professor for any kind of math. He always reads off his poorly constructed Powerpoints and he is very unclear. I got a C- even though I got a B in high school calculus (and we covered the exact same material!). As the other reviewers mentioned, his accent is hard to understand, so that doesn't help. I would highly not recommend him
I haven't even finished taking this course, but it was one that I heard was an easy A with other teachers. This teacher does not make any sense, due to his accent and poor lecture notes, that do not go in depth with examples. He reads off the slides, and talks way too fast and mumbles. I really have no idea how to do hardly anything in this class
The amount of topics for this course established by the math dept is absurd. The course moves extremely fast! Prof Tat makes slides that are equivalent to what the worthless book contains. Important topics are unclear. He says, "you need to memorise this," a lot. Examples created by him have very little effort & do no reflect HW or exam questions.
I would not recommend this professor if you are looking for efficiency and helpfulness out of any math professor. Overall, the course is very self-explanitory.
He seems like a nice guy, but his class overall is extremely painful for multiple reasons. You can't understand what he is saying until after a second or two you rethink it. After a while you are sitting in class half asleep because you can't understand him. The class is taught very dry and I've found it hard to pay attention after the second week.
He doesn't teach you the material that you're quizzed on. He goes over the same thing he taught the day before and doesn't progress to the next section for a few days so you are confused when taking the quiz. Reading the book and self teaching is your best bet for passing this class..
While I think he means well, this is the most difficult math class I've ever taken. The lectures/HW do not sync up. The HW is usually always 2-3 lectures behind, and I have retained nothing from lectures, which are extremely dry and not engaging. Basically I am teaching myself at this point. Take another teacher if you can. Maybe they'll be better.
Honestly he is the reason I have to take this class again. His tests and homework have nothing to do with the lecture. If you want to take this class and pass don't take it with tat. Lectures are so dry and confusing.
Other people seem to hate Tat but I think he's a decent teacher - plus he says hilarious things sometimes. He put mostly complete lecture notes online before class - the notes were identical to his in-class PowerPoints but very helpful and clear. The material is tricky (think SAT math section) but if you study for tests you should be alright.
Not helpful at all. Has slide shows that do not relate to the homework or tests. The only way to pass is to teach yourself.
over complicates the curriculum he is teaching. Very confusing. Defiantly show up to class if you expect to pass.
Expect lectures of bland slides that will put you to sleep, an over-reliance on mathlab material, and tests that will in no way reflect any study material provided. TA's were of some help but their fatal flaw was that they would solve example problems in ways we hadn't learnt about yet so application was near impossible.
Willing to help if you have any questions, has a sense of humor.
He's not that easy to understand and he re teaches the same material over a few days even though the homework is 3 chapters ahead of him. You'll be teaching yourself in this class, guaranteed.
Tat was not the worst teacher I've had, but he does use a clicker so attendance is important. It's not hard to get A's on his tests, just show up to class and recitation, do the math lab homework, and skim the text book. The midterms are multiple choice and fairly easy.
Hard to understand, unclear during lectures, and lectures had nothing to do with homework or tests.
I really want to learn the material in Tats class but it's extremely hard to, lectures rarely contain information on test, homework etc.. during lectures example problems aren't given so I had to rely on MyMathLab to learn the material, which is frustrating because of how picky it can be. Overall I would 100% avoid this instructor, you won't pass.
There's homework due every other day, and it never seems to be even close to what he teaches, and the tests and super tough, and irrelevant to what we learned in class.
Tat is the man
Tat is very funny even though I don't think he means to be. The homework is fairly simple if you follow along with the lectures. He gives only ONE midterm and the final. As far as the difficulty of his exams, they are fairly easy if you understand the material. I got 100% on the midterm & an A- on the final. I also received 100% on all the homework
This class is a joke. Way too easy
Lectures are hard to understand and so much impossible online homework. Ended up curving the grades because everyone did so poorly (I got like a 76 in the class and that was a B). Avoid if possible.
Hes a terrible lecturer. He doesn't really write out problems, he just uses slides. He is also so incredibly boring that paying attention is extremely difficult. If you aren't great at math, 10/10 DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HIM! Wait to take it with another professor
He is like a robot, he reads from his notes line by line, although it is available for students to have before the class started. In addition, he has a clicker quiz at the end of each class, which is about the last thing he talked about, so just write the stuff he writes on the board and last problem he solved because it would be the same.
Tat puts together slides & example problems but his ability to actually teach the material is bad. It is also hard to understand him at times, not because of his accent, but because he likes to ramble. However, he puts a curve on his class and as long as you put in effort and learn from the homework you will do fine.
Horrible lecturer that just reads PowerPoint word for word and confuses everyone further. Makes it impossible to miss class but offers no incentive to do well in them. I am relying on my recitation ta to teach me at the moment.
Definitely not as bad as the rest of the review say. Lectures are right off the ppt. slides, but contain a lot of example problems, useful for both midterms (haven't yet taken the final). His tests are also pretty easy and forgiving. Recitations are participation and weekly assignments graded on COMPLETION, not correctness.
If you have a choice do not take this professor! He mostly reads paragraphs off of his powerpoint slides, and his tests are nothing like you're taught in lecture. Get the textbook! It's the only way you will learn. I took Pre-Calc in high school so I was lucky to have some background. He has a heavy accent so he can be difficult to understand.
Tat is an interesting man of many surprises: one of them being that he is just not a good teacher. His lectures are a waste becevauxe he ends up reading his own notes which are also posted on canvas and two the homework/recitation work is always harder or something he did not go into very well
He's a funny dude, but his participation is sparse at best. Relies on Kahn a lot, which is whatever, but made me think why am I paying for an education I can get from Kahn Academy...
While he provided a ton of resources and examples, I will never be a fan of group projects - especially in math. It also seemed like the midterm and final had questions that we hadn't spent much time on. I felt confident on the homework, but as soon as his tests showed up it was like I'd never seen the type of question before.
Class was hard, but that would be the case no matter the professor. Good professor, didn't see much of his personality (though that's not always easy in an online class.) The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the weekly group problems. Definitely keep up with the homework or you'll get lost pretty quickly. The videos helped a lot.
Over 50% of the class is based on test performance. I took this class my first term of college and was slapped in the face by how hard it was. Hatase is not a very good teacher and there is one particular test worth 10% of the grade and it killed me because if you get less than a 6/10 you get a zero on the test.
Easily the worst professor I've ever had in my life. For nearly a quarter of his notes he just tells us to finish it at home. Do not take for your sake.
Basically all the teachers in the math department have their pitfalls. It seems that, compared to the other sections of 256, Tat seems to be the best at delivering easily digestible lectures. His class is very procedural (plug and chug). I understand the content very well and the midterms have both been straightforward and representative of class.
One of my favorite teachers I've had here so far, super chill. Explained the math really well, I liked how he posted the notes. Did stuff more oriented to industry which was nice. Only negative comments are is that it took forever for the homework to get entered into canvas. The homework program Webwork is kinda gross tho, but that's course wide.
Does a lot of examples in class which is helpful when learning math
Not engaging at all. Only shows half of the problem before instructing you to figure out the rest at home. my grade went from an A to a D because of a bad test score. 10% of your grade relies on an exam you can either get an 100% on or fail. have scores in the 90's for homework, quizzes, and 100% attendance. Didn't help grade. Several gave up.
Good class, good instruction, and a very approachable person. Quizzes were treated as learning opportunities, so if you worked through it and then asked for help, you'll get an A on the quiz. Tests were difficult, but not outside the realm of expectation from the quizzes. Going to class was a must, moreso than doing the homework.
Reasonable guy, I can tell that he enjoyed teaching. The content was a bit, but easy if you like math.
He has a false reputation. I had him for both Mth 112 as well as Mth 251. In 112 he was a little vague in class but nothing you cant work around. However, in Calc he was very straightforward with his lectures and as long as you focus and follow along the class is a breeze. He is very respectful and willing to answer all of your questions
Took 256 twice with different professors, Tats exams are way too difficult, so is the grading and then he doesnt even curve the class.
Tat isn't a terrible teacher. He definitely knows his stuff well, but I don't think he does the best job he could do at getting the content across. The lectures are taught at lightning speed and seem impossible to keep up with and the homework is incredibly inconsistent as far as difficulty goes. Do good the midterms to avoid stress over the final.
Tat knows math but does a terrible job at teaching it. Lectures consist of examples that are quite easy and then exams are ridiculously hard. A Majority is multiple choice that cover things that make no sense because the material is not covered in class. Also the final is weighted very very heavy so if you dont do good with the final you can fail.
He's a decent human but the entire course comes down to the midterm and the final. While you do practice the concepts that are on the tests their level of difficulty is very different from the exams. From what I understand the class is not curved so good luck.
Just pay attention during the lecture. Easy to ask questions to.
Heavy accent, but an alright teacher for math. Class material itself is pretty difficult, but he answers a lot of questions in class.
Cool dude, take him for 251 and 252. He is really good at getting through all the material you need for mymathlab to teach you everything. His accent is mild, and he doesn't show much work. All you need to do is be prepared for the test, show up for class and you will at least get a C.
Tat is a cool guy and is obviously very good at math, but kinda sucks at explaining things, so lectures can be unclear at times. Pay attention and look at textbook examples. Lectures aren't mandatory, but recitations are. He records his lectures and provides scans of all the notes. There are 4 exams and a final; they're the same for Tat and Orum.
Tat is a great professor. Very clear with what he expects from students academically. The class is not difficult if you practice a little everyday and keep up with the material. I like how he gives textbook examples of questions that are similar to those on an exam. He splits the exams into 4 throughout the term rather than 2 big midterms.
He goes through problems way too fast. He also very rarely explains himself when doing problems and jumps from question to answer.
Professor Hatase knows math, but he does not seem to care much about how his students generally do. The exams have weird twists to almost every question. 8/10 questions on the exams are either barely related or weirdly twisted in a way that all of the studying and homework that you have done seems pointless. Highly recommend not taking this class.
You will have next to no idea what shows up on the test until you take it. Expect multiple choice questions that have nothing in common with the homework or recitations.
A very cool guy who explains things very effectively if you ask him for clarification. However, homework assignments are difficult and often long, and exams often have convoluted questions or concepts that weren't properly covered. Recitation work often involves things the recitation teacher has to teach us rather than review.
He explains things well in lecture for the most part (doesn't always write out the examples fully, expects you to practice with the problems displayed in class). Homeworks are a lot harder than the tests, but overall if you attended lecture you can actually get the concepts (reading the textbook is not ideal).
Having taken Tat before, it was nice to come back to a familiar lecture style. He is good at explaining concepts and the lecture notes are extremely helpful for preparing for lectures and for reviewing. Doesn't always write out examples completely which isn't always great, but it is mostly stuff you practice a lot so it isn't a super big deal.
Tat is a mediocre instructor and comes down on your learning style. He is a nice person. Explainations can be fast/unclear at times. Quizzes are fair but the exams are challenging. Notecard on exam, homework on quizzes are helpful. If you learn better by looking at examples, take him.
I wish Tat just took his time instead of skipping crucial steps always. I like his style of teaching, he just needs to get better at it himself.
He's a good professor but you may also need to check online resources like organic chem tutor to understand the material better. Tests also make up a majority of your grade but there's also a lot of partial credit.
Hatase teaches a solid class. He's super up front about everything that's expected--I was not surprised once on a test because it's all material that we have covered in lecture. He is very concise, provides many examples, and also is cool and has a tattoo. Advice: follow along his lecture examples in your own notebook. So much writing but worth it.
Class time is used for lectures, like almost every other math class. Sometimes he skips steps or parts of problems that we have covered in previous lectures, but generally that's ok. Midterms mostly mimic the problems given in weekly quizzes and written homework. The final is HARD- study for it, regardless of how well you did on the midterms.
Professor Hatase is AWESOME! His style of teaching is very fluid, he has handouts made for every class so taking notes along with him is made very easy, especially if you have a tablet. The textbook is free, so you only need to pay for Achieve. I have him currently for MTH 253, and hope to have him for MTH 256 as well.
Textbook and Webwork are free. Attendance not mandatory, but must attend class to build strong understanding. Tat posts notes online, too, and makes material very accessible, despite skipping steps to problems in class. Overall, he's a cool guy and ensures that the midterms and final are relatively easy if you've done well on everything else
The class was hard, there was a lot of material covered and at the end it felt somewhat rushed, but tat was always very open to questions and the lectures pretty easy to follow. He gives a fair bit of hw and webwork isn't the best but a lot of 256 is just practice practice practice so it makes sense.
The class itself is hard, just be prepared for that. At the beginning of the term, I thought Tat wasn't all that great, but looking back, he's actually a pretty good prof. Yes, the content that he teaches is hard, but he's very understanding, and lectures are very helpful in that he does all the examples that you need for the HW.
Hatase is hard to rate. On one hand, he is a very good teacher. He explains things well. My problem is with his tests for this class. I'm usually a very good test-taker, but his tests are insanely difficult. You learn types of problems in lecture, and then on the test asks you questions that are of a completely different form. Very bad tests.
Tat is a dope dude but he really needs to switch up his method of teaching. Manystudents complain about it, yet he continues using the same lesson plans, assigns the same homework, and does the same example problems in class. Also, if you're reading this Tat, try to skip less steps when problems get more complicated, ie. tough laplace transforms.
Tat is a very straight forward prof, his lecture notes were simple but effective and he posts the lectures. Beware, his lectures can be confusing if you aren't great at math as he skips a lot of steps. The midterms are similar to class but the final is insanely hard. Overall pretty good, he has bad reviews cause he teaches hard classes
Overall my experience with Tat was not good. Tat did a poor job at explaining concepts and when asked questions about how he did a certain step he would sometimes respond with "that's just how it works" (he actually said that). I often found myself learning more from YouTube videos and my recitation instructor.
Tat is a teacher who often skips steps while doing problems in class, and can at times be hard to understand/follow. When I finally showed up to his office hours, I wasn't even able to ask my question as his small office was overflowing with confused students and from what I heard this is a common occurrence. Avoid Tat if you care about your GPA.
Tat has a really good lecture format, where he uses color coding to illustrate concepts. He takes time to explain what's important, and skips over "little calculations" often, encouraging us to do them on our own. This is an unfortunate but necessary consequence of this course being very dense and reliant on 252/251 knowledge. Study hard for tests!
Dr. Tat is exceptionally flexible and gave me a lot of opportunities to make up missed work (weeks late) and extensions. The class wasn't challenging; my grade wasn't an A because I missed an exam. There is HW once a week, pre-class quizzes based on the textbook, and non-mandatory in-class assignments. It's an easy class if you do the work.
Had Tat for 254 and 256 both great experiences, Always on top of his shit, has lecture videos, scans the lecture notes right after class, and is always prepped and ready to go. His pace is very good doesn't go to into the weeds on wild theory and how stuff gets derived instead goes over examples during class giving clear instruction for each step.
MTH 254 is a hard class, and you're going to need to put in a lot of work to get a good grade. Tat isn't part of the problem however, he had great lectures with easy to follow lecture notes that would be available online. He would create study guides for all of the exams that would prepare me very well. Tat is very knowledgeable and organized.
This professor is horrible. He did not explain anything in class properly and gave the most difficult homework. His lectures, homework, and guides did not relate to each other in any proper way and almost everyone I know hated taking this class with him. He also grades very harshly and doesn't give proper feedback unless you probe him. Avoid him.
Tat, as a professor, likes to each through examples. He rarely worked an example to the end, though, and doesn't explain concepts very well. Questions get brushed off or answered as if they addressed an entirely different issue. Cool person, just the worst professor I've ever taken in my life. Had to teach myself the entire class. I'd avoid him.
He's nice and provides examples and support options. I think the ratings are a bit unfair towards him. I will say the exams tended to get more stressful time wise but I am usually a slower test taker. (Obviously content wise too but that's with any class)
Vector calc is arguably the hardest class for new college students to take, which seems to represent the harsh ratings here. While I don't know the other teachers, I know that Tat always gives good lectures, always has answers for students in class, and puts the lectures online. Study AS hard as you can for the first two tests, as those are heavy.
Very good. 10/10 would recommend
Tat is a cool dude overall. He does this weird thing where he flicks his tongue whenever he says something, I think it's probably to help us remember things. There's a lot of weekly homework, with 3 exams and 1 final. The exams are around 15% of your grade each, and the rest being homework and recitation. No textbook but you need achieve access.
He's funny but only explains things one way.
His ratings are unfair. He's a chill professor that teaches a hard class so don't expect it to be a walk in the park, but if you pay attention in lecture and ask questions during recitation and office hours there's no reason why you wouldn't be able to succeed. The final was a bit harder than all three mini exams, so study extra hard for it.
Doesn't necessarily teach, but does walk you through some introductory problems, as well as some that get a lot of questions. Watching the videos beforehand is helpful; if you've taken AP Calc AB it'll be a walk in the park. Just do you work, study, and ask questions (especially with the Learning Assistants).
I love Tat and am currently taking him again for 256. He's a great lecturer and the grading distribution makes it so only 50% of your grade is tests, pretty good imo. Would take again.
he aint all that bad, but pretty useless explaining concepts, or even helping you on questions. Use kahn academy or something and youl be fine. Also tests were very similar to recitation worksheets, so go through them thourougly before mini exam days.
Tat's lectures are straightforward, but he tends to skip steps when things get complex. The midterms are similar to classwork, but the final is brutally hard. Definitely use unstuck ai and practice constantly to ace this class.
Tat is overall a good lecturer, just nothing special. Pay attention, take notes, and go to office hours as needed- really just like any other professor
Tat is so awesome! He's a great teacher, I don't why people be hating on this man, he's so funny! The class itself is tough because grasping the idea of integrals is hard, but if you do a lot of practice problems you should be fine in this class. The tests were super easy if you study for them.
The best thing about Tat is that his exams and final aren't weighted very heavily. If you go to recitation, complete all of your hw and reflections, you can rack up a good amount of points so you won't need to ace the exams to pass. There are better lectures on youtube if you hate his lectures, the math is all the same. Study hard, you'll be fine.
Tat's lecture style was comprehensive, and ideas were explained well. You know what is going to be on the test, and exactly what you need to study for. As long as you follow along with lectures and do the homework/study, you'll be just fine.
I really liked him as a professor. Integral calculus isn't necessarily easy, but it's not extremely difficult. Just pay attention in class, and ask questions if you don't understand something. The last four weeks of class move very quickly, so make sure you have the energy to kick it into overdrive and really nail the content.
Can't understand anything he says, randomly clicks with his tongue mid sentence. Skipped last 4 weeks of class and got better scores than when I tried learning from him.
Tat is a great guy, so funny and nonchalant. MTH256 is just a pretty difficult class but love this guy.
Honestly, I think people rate Tat so low because 254 is a hard class. While the class is hard, Tat is one of the best teachers to teach it. There is a lot of homework, and you do have to put in effort, but he is lenient on grading and is willing to help if you come up to him.
Lectures were helpful. I learned better when I printed the worksheets he used and took notes on them
took him for 254 and he didn't disappoint for 256! im rating again just to get his average up because i don't understand his poor ratings. hes a no bs professor that gets straight into content, and lectures are valuable. if you study and ask questions during recitation and office hours there's almost a guarantee you'll do well in his class.
His lecture was about 50 min long. Lots of HW because it a 4 credit class. Test was mostly multiple choice and a few written. Multiple choice will trip you up if you didn't study, because if you get it wrong you get it wrong. I will just not take math with him since, it hard for me to follow.
HW and tests were light, lectures were ok - mostly practice problems. Taught the material in a way that would help you pass tests, not understand the concepts. Fine prof if you don't want to major in math.
Seems fine as a person but this man does not lecture. He assigns youtube videos and textbook reading to do before class, expands on it a little in class with a worksheet then says "you should be able to do the rest of the worksheet based on the prelecture videos and reading". If you struggle with math/calculus, find a different professor.
- Attendance mandatory - In class does not teach much, just gives definitions and solves an example problem - heavily relied on reading the textbook (I just used organic chem tutor on yt) - has yet to post his office hours and I had to rely on the mslc - His TAs are the only people helping me pass - Switching to linn benton after this experience
Do not take Tat unless you are very strong with math coming into this class. He does not lecture whatsoever. He hands out worksheets at the beginning of class, shows us how to do two or three problems and gives us a definition or two, then tells us to go finish the worksheet on our own and to ask for help if we need it.
Vector is a difficult course, Tat makes it easier, cares about student success.
I am unsure why he's rated so low, as I loved him. Learning from Tatsuhiko (Tat) may be difficult, as all he does is give a definition and then solve practice problems with you, but it works for some people. Homework is weekly but relatively simple once you grasp the subject. Tests can be difficult without an extensive understanding of the unit.
He has an accent, but it doesn't affect his teaching at all, you can definitely understand what he's saying. I think he gets a bad rep because he teaches a math course, and most people don't wanna be there. Only thing I'd watch out for is being specific when asking questions, there isn't really any time set aside to do that- advocate for yourself!
He has a noticeable accent but communicates very clearly and his lectures have a nice flow to them. All in-class examples are explained clearly and in detail, which helps a lot in a relatively difficult course. Would take him again
Guy does not teach! You show up to class and he breezes through practice problems. Does not explain concepts or how to solve anything. By far the worst "teacher" ive ever had.
Funny in his own way and a reasonable guy. Tests aren't especially difficult and the lectures are actually very helpful.
I personally love the way Tat teaches. He is very clear in his explanations, highlights the important parts to remember, and has a dry sense of humor which lightens things up. I took MTH254 with him, which was a difficult course, but his lectures helped me a lot.
Professor Tat was an okay lecturer. He would briefly go over conceptual ideas, but focus on practice problems more, which didn't help our understanding much. He also gives out way too much homework (2 - 3 online and 2 written homework per week). I honestly spent most of my time doing stuff for this class
