Overall she is rude, abrasive, and completely disconnected from what is & is not appropriate for class. She would come in with an awful & disrespectful demeanor that puts everyone on edge. She somehow finds a way to condescend to you AND not know what she is talking about, all at the same time.

I dreaded going to this class because of how rude Professor Mata interacted with students. She assigns difficult reading and then gets upset when the class is not an expert on it. There are only two papers and she offers extra credit. The class has an insanely high grading scale (you have to get a 95 to get an A).

After finding out she writes fake 5 star reviews on here to "balance out the incorrect opinions", I felt it was my responsibility to join in & write a HONEST review so people can understand what she is truly like. She is an absolutely awful professor. Instead of writing dishonest reviews Taylor, maybe learn from the and be a better teacher?

An inefficient instructor with a proclivity for starting arguments with her students. Incredibly anxiety inducing to deal with, and not at all pleasant. Would give a 0 if possible. Do not recommend.

“Professor Mata gives intense feedback on certain paper assignments so prepare to be slightly humbled at times.” Oh wow, she's not even trying to hide the fact that she wrote her own review. The only one who should be “slightly humbled” is this narcissistic instructor.

Unfortunately, my experience with this teacher was disappointing. Not only was their attitude consistently condescending, but they also seemed uninterested in fostering a supportive learning environment. When I asked questions, their responses were dismissive, and they often made students feel uncomfortable for seeking clarification.

Unless you love crying and hating life I recommend taking her! She seriously has an immense passion for making students feel uncomfortable. Don't be fooled by the "student reviews" that rate her highly, because all her students in my class were on the same page about not liking her. I paid more than $1k for this class and needed therapy after. 0/10

I often fantasized about getting myself into a car accident on the way to campus whenever I had to attend Mata's lectures. Mata ran her classes like they were presidential debates, I didn't know if I was running for president or trying to get a college education. If I had the luxury to give Mata a 0, I would. Stay far away from this professor.

After talking with fellow students, I also felt inclined to write an honest review. I can't add anything else to this matter, as everyone else has already summed up how much a bully and a narcissist this instructor is. If I was her I would be ashamed of writing false positive reviews. If she really was “so nice”, she wouldn't have to lie.

The anxiety is real. There's always a sense of dread and she makes it very hard to be awake with her 24/7 lectures. the only thing keeping me up is her intimidating nature that makes you feel like a chicken cutlet being tenderized asking you a question you don't know or may have missed out on reading making it seem like you didnt even read the book

She's a joke for real and if you plan on taking her I would highly recommend not showing up because of how rude she is. Thankfully I haven't been singled out but my turn is next and it seems like she's pissed off so many people already it is crazy and good luck to the people who are in my class still and the many more to come later

I genuinely have to take a deep breath before I walk into her classroom because the anxiety she gives me is insane. She finds comfort in publicly humiliating people by making them look/feel dumb, and is so quick to bully college kids.i pray that my appendix would rupture in this class, so i can leave and never come back. Not understanding at all. Shows up late. Very loud and super blunt when she talks. Does not give clear criteria about papers. Would not reccomend at all.

This teacher was not good! She showed up late to class multiple times sometimes by 15 minutes, but if we show up late by 2 minutes, we lose attendance points, even if the roads are bad. Not a lot of homework or papers. Tough grader. When you ask a question, she makes you feel stupid. Very loud when she talks, basically screaming. makes bad jokes.

Terrible professor. She likes to hurt students feelings for no reason. Don't ever take her, she sucks.

I have an A in the class and I'm still considering dropping the course because of how awful she is. She preaches respect for others yet publicly humiliates you in front of the class. This is not a communication intensive course, yet we're graded on how much we communicate? Make that make sense. Save yourself the trouble and don't take Mata.

An extremely miserable person who makes sure to make everyone around her just as unhappy. She constantly talks about equality but brags about being a landlord and "what it's taught her"... I came here to learn, not to hear about how she contributes to capitalism and hurts poor people. The hypocrisy & ignorance is loud with this one.

she talks..... a lot and is very intimidating in nature, but unsure if she is aware of it. She loves to give assignments with directions you can only obtain for the first 2 minutes of class through tiny print on her laptop. Her eye contact is very intense and demeanor is strong. Not very kind or welcoming and you don't ever get used to it.

Avoid this teacher at all costs. She is rude & barely comprehends her own teaching material. She is very quick to anger, & explains everything in a condescending manner, even if she is wrong. When students try to politely correct her on source material, or even their own perception of the work, she takes it as a personal offense. Disappointing.

I feel very uncomfortable in this class with Professor Mata. Let me explain; she will read questionable material and pan directly at one of the minority kids the text references. Though I do believe these actions are subconscious, it makes me feel odd. Her overall demeaner is eccentric to say the least and you definitely have to be on guard 24/7.

Exhaustingly out of touch with the students, incredibly rude and hateful, and “promotes equality” by objectifying minority students. It seems it's impossible for her to act normal and not be incredibly tone deaf when it comes to her students. Extremely disappointing.

Good gosh---I can't believe how much assigned reading we have to do every other day on top of other classes and work. Diabolical how this class is nearly impossible to accomplish and I would never recommend taking this course. My level 300 classes are so much easier than what she expects of her students. BEWARE, this professor loves to accuse the class of not doing their reading but the questions she asks make no sense. When you try to ask her to elaborate she barely answers you and doesn't give you a chance to answer before calling on someone else. If I was offered 1 million dollars to show up for even half of the classes, I wouldn't take it.

The name of this class is "Thematic Approach to Literature." However, I reckon we shift the title to: "Literature's Best Smut;" where we all read s3xual scenes aloud and not one book will be PG. We have read nothing but very graphic and disturbing content making many students uncomfortable. Not even close to being appropriate for college material.

To the reviewer (who is obviously mata) saying “this is like boot camp!”… NO, it is NOT, this is a SCHOOL, we came here to learn, not to be made miserable! The class itself was not that hard, few papers ( but pretty long). Taylor made this class misearble, she would make you feel dumb about any questions you have, she will call you out in front of the class for the smallest things. If you are late, you dont get points but she was late many times. If you can, save yourself the time and energy.

She attempts to exude confidence but frequently misunderstands core material, leading to confusion among all of us. A stronger grasp of the subject and willingness to learn would benefit students far more than misplaced certainty.

I unfortunately had Mata my freshman year; I am now a junior. Not surprised to see how horrible she's doing as a "professor". I had two freshmen come to me this year saying how off-putting their English professor is, and I said, "Is her name Mata?" Of course, they said yes. Students who have her, make sure to hit up the mental health center.

The class itself isn't necessarily that hard, but the professor and this course combined makes it a living nightmare. I'd rather have to retake my entire anatomy class than repeat this course. Do not let the initial introduction reflect and deceive you for what she truly leads to be.

The choice of material was questionable, but the way she taught it made a very uncomfortable atmosphere. If you like reading an entire book every week, this course may be for you. Be prepared for a hard-headed and stubborn professor to match understandings of text splices with, God forbid she doesn't start an argument.
