I took his Environmental History Class for WR100. He's a fantastic professor, classes are interactive, full of fascinating discussions and ideas, material is thought-provoking; he's very friendly, loves the material and the students.

This guy is so awesome and his class is SO interesting. I take American Environmental History and I thought it was going to be boring and dry, but it's may favorite class. He is AWESOME and really nice and the discussions are so good! Take any class he teaches. ANY class.

He's a really nice professor and the class is a lot more interesting than you think. It's not totally necessary to do all the reading, and there's a lot of class discussions. He is always happy and willing to listen to everyone's ideas.

He's a really nice guy, always willing to listen and help you, and he's very passionate about the subject. He's not the easiest grader, but he's very clear about what he wants and gives very helpful suggestions, I really think my writing improved. Highly reccomend taking a class with fitts.

ditto... This guy definitely has some substance history, cuz he is DOPE!!! :) material can get a bit dry, but it's overwhelming how engaging and thought-provoking the discussions can turn out to be in the end.. Fitts gets an A+ on the chilled, laidback environment. Oh yeah... he's tha man :)

Fitts is a great guy who really loves what he is doing. He knows his material very well and is very receptive to new ideas and encourages you to think. He is a very fair graded and is willing to help.

i love him! he is passionate about his subject and encourages his students as well! lots of leeway on paper topics (if you dont like his general proposal, you can literally do WHATEVER you want related to nature). i actually read the books because i WANT to participate! highly recommended!

Mr. Fitts is a terrific professor! He is always extremely clear and helpful. Without a doubt in my mind, this is one of the most exciting classes that BU has to offer. The interactive class discussions regarding the proper relationship between humans and nature are extremely interesting!!!

Piles on boring reading. Don't take the class unless you love nature. He doesn't "believe" in grades - not too helpful for anyone trying to get an A. it's an 8am class and you have to attend. it sucks :-(! i do not recommend it.

This is a fantastic class. Professor Fitts is one of the kindest individuals you will ever meet. He is always so clear and helpful. Although he may not be an "easy grader," you should be able to do very well in this class if you put forth quality time and effort. This is the most interesting class I have ever taken.

This class is definitely IT. For those with catholic but iconoclastic tastes, one could find no finer fishing place than the Tyee River. We were not amused, but did our utmost to distress the phantasms. Amor de Cosmos.

Professor Fitts is the most caring individual you can ever meet. Even though there is a lot of effort and time required to do well on papers, it is a worthwhile class. He is very helpful during office hours. However, it is certainly not an easy "A", especially that he doesn't believe in grading as an assessment of your knowledge.

Professor Fitts is the best teacher I have ever had. The readings are interesting and he leads very stimulating discussions. He knows how to ask provocative questions that challenege your thinking. He helped me improve my writing 100%. He is also very kind and shows genuine interest in his students. He's always quick to respond by e-mail.

I LOVED this class, but probably only because of Professor Fitts. He is very interested in his subject and is willing to help you out whenever you need it he is also totally laid back and loves his students. HIGHLY recommend his 100 or 150 class.

Fitts is an amazing teacher! He always keeps what would seem a boring and dry subject fun by encouraging a lot of participation and by providing interesting and relevant readings. I liked him so much for WR100 that I took him again for WR150 and ended up loving the class even more. He's a fair but hard grader and cares alot about his students.

Great guy, great class. Discussions are interesting despite the fact the topic could be bland. You get to pick all your own paper topics that are independant to class readings. Overall pretty solid experience.

american environmental history ... most boring class in the world probably and the reading made me fall asleep BUT he is a good professor and really does want to help you improve your writing. i say only take it if you love american environmental history. discussions - oh my god, whatever you say is logical.

very boring class only because of the subject material, however professor fitts is a great professor and is very passionate about American Envionmental History. He grades really tough on papers, so be careful, but does allow re-writes on some.

The class discussions always got off topic which is great so those of us that didn't do the readings could switch to something we know about. Very nice guy and excellent prof. My only complaint is that for a guy that tells you that "grades aren't important - it's the learning experience" he grades pretty harshly.

I knew after the first week of classes that Prof. Fitts would be my favorite hands down. Even if you aren't that interested in the course, he makes it interesting for you. He definitely has a passion for the subject. I would take another course with him just to have him as my professor, regardless of the class. Take his class- you won't regret it!

pick his class ONLY when you are one of those people who love talking in class. If you don't talk, then don't take this class. It is only wonderful for people who talk a lot. other than that, he's a very nice guy.

Honestly everyone needs to take this class. Ted Fitts is one of the best Professors i have ever had. The topic we discussed was so engaging and extremely fun. Ted goes above and beyond to improve not only your writing skills but your abilitly to think critically. Awesome class. TAKE IT!!!

Great Professor! He sparks extremely interesting discussion. I was basically forced into this class because it was the only one available for the timeslots I had left. But I am so glad that I signed up! If you put some effort into it, you can get an A. He is more than willing to help you out with anything, TAKE THIS CLASS!

Don't get me wrong, Ted Fitts is a great man, but he just assigns a bunch of work that doesn't really help your writing ability. Some of his discussions may be enticing, but I'm not paying all this money for a useless writing course. Take an easy writing course, or at least one you are interested in, that's what I learned.

I took this class having little knowledge of environmental history and ended up wholly enjoying it. Prof. Fitts is a great speaker who includes everybody and stimulates tons of interest in what at times seems like a dry subject. One of the best professors at BU.

Excellent professor! He really cares about the class and helping your writing improve. It's really helpful to go to office hours just to talk, but especially to help narrow topic ideas for your papers.

Took WR 100 and WR 150 with prof. Fitts and I loved both courses. If you are looking to drastically improve your writing skills, his classes may not be for you, but if you're at all interested in the environment take this class! Very helpful if you go to office hours

Read the material and attend class and it is possible to pull an A. Somewhat difficult grader. Very specific on what he wants in your writing. Personable if you go to his office hours. Other than that he is a hippy.

I feel like I have to write something about prof. Fitts because he is THAT good. I took his class for two semesters and it was worth every second of my time. He is an awesome professor, really cares about his students, and he will help you improve your writing A LOT! Be prepared to work in his class, but definitely worth it! TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

Writing was one of my strongest categories. Fitts is the first teacher to challenge me, and truly develop me to another level. He is NOT an easy grader, and you need some skills to pull an A. However, if you didn't have them going in you will definitely have them after his course. He is as good as it gets; one of the BEST and BRIGHTEST in his field

You learn a lot of interesting stuff and you're never bored in class, but you will always get the same grade (which isn't going to be higher than a B+) no matter how much work you put into it. All the readings take up too much time, overall it's not worth, brought my GPA down.

Prof. Fitts is an awesome, awesome professor. He is absolutely brilliant. I cannot say enough great things about him.He truly cares about each of his students and does his best to help each of us grow. I know I have become a better writer because of him and my grades have reflected that as well. I loved this class and would recommend it to everyone

Fitts is a really good professor and class discussions are great. He is a very hard grader and doesn't give A's really. However, if you work hard you'll improve and your grade will go up. The low grades are more of a way to make you work hard and on the Final paper you should do better. Overall really good class and really improved my writing

I really loved being in the class discussions.He made Environmental History something to really think about. However, he is such a hard grader.I went to office hours and tried to do as he suggested and my grades didn't improve as much as I hoped.My writing is defintiely better! But I wish he would show it a little more in his grading.

Makes a boring topic interesting and enlightening. A nice professor who will really improve your writing skills. However, a GPA killer - for a man who hates grading, it is impossible to get anywhere higher than a B+, even if you're his brightest student. If you don't care about GPA and would rather improve your writing, Fitts is for you!

Best teacher I have had in college. Truly improved my writing and challenged me. Very hard to get an A- and will most likely bring your grade down. Although I went to his 8am class, I never wanted to miss one of his interesting talks on environmental history.

An amazing guy. He seems a little quirky, but he's the best. He helped me so much with my final paper and honestly is one of the most attentive, interesting professors I've ever had. He doesn't grade hard; he grades accurately. One of the few professors in BUs writing programs that truly cares about the progress of his students.

Very difficult professor, but I learned more about proper writing in this class than my wr150 class. Hard to get an A, and the class itself was quite a journey trying to improve. Read some good books and some terrible ones too, but more than anything it made me think harder than I thought was possible!

Professor Fitts is seriously the most incredible professor/mentor/person I have ever met. The class itself is challenging, but it's absolutely worth it. He sincerely cares about his students (he wrote me a two-page letter at the end of the course detailing my progress over the semester!) and is just an all-around wonderful person. Take his course!

One of the most enthusiastic professors at BU, really loves this class and raises interest in the topic. You'll actually learn how to write better. HOWEVER, it's impossible to get an A/A-, so if you care (like future employers) about your GPA, AVOID,take an easier prof. Take Fitts only if you really want to write better & have an interesting class.

If you just want to take writing to fill your requirement, don't take him. But if you actually want to learn how to write like a boss you better take TFitts. Fitts made every class enjoyable and exciting, and he was always available outside of class and responded to emails within 24 hours. You probably won't get a good grade, but you'll learn a lot

Though Professor Fitts was very engaging as a professor and really helped me grow as a writer, he is quite stingy when it comes to grades, giving the student who participates in every class and comes to every class a B for participation. He is very set in his ways and doesn't budge. But the course material was fabulous!

He says he wants to "turn down the volume on grades" but is a really harsh grader. Only 5% of the grade is for participation (including making posts online) and every absence after two you lose half a letter grade. His comments aren't helpful. He criticizes and instead of making suggestions. I wanted to cry when I read his comments on my paper.

Prof Fitts is very enthusiastic and kind! My writing definitely improved because he cares a lot about students. If you skip class or don't put in effort on drafts, that's your problem. But he gives great comments and wants students to improve. He's one of BU's best professors. Really great class!

Professor Fitts is the most incredible professor I have had the pleasure of having. His lectures are full of enthusiasm and he really cares about his students and their progress. He is a tough grader, but go to office hours and he will tell you what he expects. Bottom line is he will teach you how to write like a boss.

Ted Fitts seems like a great teacher at first. He gives plenty of feedback on your writing. HOWEVER, he will not answer any questions regarding his grading policies. He will take off points for almost no reason other than he felt like it. He will not answer your specific questions about your writing and loves to be extraordinarily vague. DONT TAKE!

Haters gonna hate. Get over yourself. And do some real work. Prof. Fitts cares--about his students and about helping us grow. He gives great feedback. He responds amazingly fast to emails. He took me seriously and I had to work harder. My grade improved when I started to work. I love the course and value him a lot!

Fitts is engaging and encourages class participation & sharing ideas without judgment. HOWEVER, although he claims to not really care about focusing on grades (only grades are papers, attendance, discussion posts and participation), he grades very harshly. Offers vague feedback on papers and makes you feel as though you aren't improving.

Super nice and says he hates grading. Will sit with you and talk through a paper and gives lots of feedback on drafts yet after you talk to him and make all of these changes that HE suggested, you're lucky to get above a C. Mandates a lot of ungraded assignments that won't help you, tons of reading, and overall tough grader.

While Professor Fitts was certainly a hard grader, I believe the class is very manageable with time commitment. He's very personal and is extremely enthusiastic! As long as you are willing to respond to his feedback, however much or little there are, you will do fine within the course. But, as a warning, be prepared to write, write and WRITE!

I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Fitts' class, specifically because I put a lot of effort into the class and in return, I gained more than I could have ever imagined. While he is a tough grader, diligently putting in the time to build a solid conceptual problem over the course of the assignment pays off.

Ted Fitts is the best professor at BU. He not only cares about his students, but also will do whatever he can to make you a better writer. This is not an easy A, but it is a very satisfying A. I learned so much about the environment; we got to read about nature and I always loved going to class. Ted is the best person I've met in college. TAKE HIM!

Professor Fitts is an outstanding teacher. He is cool, calm, and creative. His passion for the subject is unmatched by other teachers I have had thus far. He is enthusiastic about his work and honestly wants the best for his students. Even though I am an engineering student, Professor Fitts stimulated my interest on a rather dry topic week to week.

Overall, Fitts is a good prof. He is a tough grader and expects a lot out of you, really have to work hard for what you want. There were assigned readings for each class, a good idea to read them because you have to blog about them or have a class period discussing the material. He doesn't really teach you how to write, more what to write about.

He will tend to assign a lot of work for a writing class, but he always tries to offer time in class to work on research and papers. At first, I strongly disliked this professor. However, he made me work for a good grade and helped me develop as a writer. He finds ways to motivate and engage all of his students. If you're looking to improve your writing, this professor is definitely a good choice.

His class itself was interesting and he stimulated engaging discussions. That being said, he assigns a lot of time consuming work. He is a nitpicker and grades way too harshly. He claims to care a lot about his students and not so much about grades but don't be surprised if you end up with a ridiculously low grade for a first year writing class.

If I could redo this semester I would never take WR100 with Fitts. Great guy, but honestly this class is not worth the time and effort he expects his students to devote to do well. If things are not done exactly his way you will not end up with a good grade. Tries to act like he doesn't care about grades but is the harshest grader I've encountered.

Ted Fitts is incredibly caring and wonderful prof. He wanted to make sure everyone was not only enjoying the class but also enjoying BU. Professor Fitts is my absolute favorite professor at Boston University. As long as you email him your paper a day before the due date he'll leave lots of constructive feedback on how to improve your paper and you'll really get on his good side. Emailing him late results in him rushing to read your paper without leaving the best comments.

Professor Fitts is one of the kindest, most caring professors I've ever had. He always made sure that his students were doing okay and gave great feedback on our work. He never placed the emphasis on graded work, but that meant that our papers were counted for much more than usual and were graded somewhat harshly.

If you are a freshman, do not take this class. Fitts fails to expln what he looks for and grading criteria. I often received conflicting feedback from him. He is a fan of turning things early, if you turn it on time, he gives little to no feedback and (probs) slaps a B on it. He often calls the same three kids to speak so better be one of them.

He is a very kind and caring person, but his class was boring and did not significantly improve my writing. He is a tough grader and there were only 3 papers in the whole semester, with the final paper worth 40%. I would strongly recommend going to office hours because he gives more specific feedback there.

Professor Fitts's classes are mostly improvised, open discussions. He asks really thought provoking questions about our relationship with the environment. Nevertheless, he is a tough grader, but he provides very good feedback and is very caring. I would recommend Fitts if you like writing, discussions, and environmental history.

Played favorites and was tough or indifferent to those who werent, made passive aggressive comments about missed discussion posts and people late to/missing class. Lots of reading. What a fabulous professor! People who complain, particularly in multiple posts by the same person, need to get a life. Or better, just do some work and stop whining. Professor Fitts is deeply caring, very enthusiastic, and responds incredibly fast to emails while also returning student work faster than any other teacher or professor.

Professor Fitts did a great job using Zoom when we had to use it this spring. He promoted class discussion like we were all still in our classroom together. Some of my Zoom classes were mishandled but not this one! I really enjoyed learning with him and with my classmates all spring! He made it work!!

Professor Fitts was one of the highlights of my first semester at BU. His class was always an engaging and fun experience, something that is hard to do over Zoom. He was sure to give students multiple opportunities to submit drafts prior to grading, which he would return with comments and suggestions. Overall a fantastic prof and a great class!

Prof. Fitts is the most genuine, caring professor ever. He literally cares for every students and if you actively listen to his advice, your writing improves so much. He is a gem, national treasure, and deserves a clean planet. "Peace, Love, and Happiness" will be tattooed across my chest and put on a bumper sticker for my 2009 Honda Civic.

Fitts is a king, and I respect him as a person. However, this class was so much more work than I anticipated. No one else I know had this much work for a freshman writing course. Also, he is the hardest grader ever! I went to office hours twice for each paper and got no higher than an A-. I worked the hardest for this class and did the worst.

Prof Fitts is the most understanding and caring professor I have had. He is amazing and you should definitely go to office hours and email him to build a good bond with him. Honestly he is a great professor and you will definitely improve your writing skills after taking his class. That being said, he grades very harshly and you can expect to not get an A in this class even if you try your hardest because his standards are simply too high for a first-year writing class and going to office hours won't help much either.

Fitts cares more about what students get out of the class material than what they get for a grade. With that being said, he is a tough grader, but if you participate in class and show that you care you can succeed. Participate often, and put a LOT of effort into your essay drafts -- act on every comment that he leaves, it will pay off.

Fitts is one of the only professors I have had that actually seemed to care about me. But that being said the amount of assignments is ridiculous and hard to manage on top of an already packed course load. Many 2,000 word papers where we were required to answer lengthy questions, reflections, and don't even get me started on the portfolio.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE. Ted seems nice at first but then he makes u do an ungodly amount of work that is extremely overwhelming on top of other demanding classes. His comments are more like backhanded compliments, and a slap to the face. He will tell u one thing to fix and when u do u are still wrong. AVOID HIS CLASS

While it is very easy to get a B in this class on any paper, it is almost impossible to get an A. He is not understanding at all and will write passive aggressive emails that just leave you feeling more lost than you already did. Does not work with students the way a teacher should, do not take this class if you have mental illness.

Looking back now on my first year, I am SO glad I took Prof. Fitts and Environmental History! He is really warm and enthusiastic. He helped me grow as a person and as a writer. Professor Fitts will help you improve your writing and cares for his students. However, expect lots of work. He assigns readings after classes even on top of essays assigned. He gives good feedback but expect B's on all of your essays. Don't take this class if you are worried about low grades and don't want lots of work on top of other coursework.

This class wasn't great. He was caring and a really nice guy but his essay feedback was vague and confusing. The essay prompts are vague and do not expect to get higher than a B on any assignment. I went from getting As on every paper I wrote before this to never getting higher than an 87. There are so many readings that don't matter.

The definition of someone who loves his job. Upholds a friendly atmosphere in class, and discussions are always thought-provoking. Mr. Fitts is such an amazing professor who emphasizes creativity within writing and growing your skills. The class is definitely rigorous. This will probably be the hardest writing class I've had to take at BU but it will also be my favorite. Professor Fitts treats his classes like a family I'm so glad to have been a part of it. If you're not interested in working hard, don't take this class but if you do you DEFINITELY wont regret it.

Professor Fitts is easily the most kind and caring professor I've had. He truely cares about your success as a writer and your development into a better argumentative writer. Amazing professor and a super kind person. There were a good number of papers, and at times the due dates could be a bit hard to track. Such an inspiring class. All you have to do is care and participate to succeed because Professor Fitts is more than happy to help with everything else. I learned so much. Great professor in terms of personality, lecture style and accessibility. However, you are only graded on a few papers/projects which make up the majority of your grade. Not super clear on grading and comments, but is pretty supportive. The papers are pretty long and take a lot of time to write, but the discussions in class are very valuable.

Fitts is a really nice Professor and I enjoyed taking his class, but for WR120 its among the hardest, he expects the absolute best out of you for essays and is a very tough grader, and we do alot of them as well. The class was really interesting and the dynamic was fun but it was really a tough class to do well in if you are not an excellent writer

One Paper is worth 40% of your grade. This is a difficult class if you are not interested in nature, and you have a lot of work to do. PLEASE do not take this class. You'll have to scramble to get an A in his class unless you know how to write New York Times Best Seller essays. He's very nice though, and he wrote a rec letter for me.

I felt very uncomfortable in this class. As a female, he gave me extra attention and made comments about me that made me uneasy in a classroom setting. Homework assignments over a 2 day period would be up to 75 pages long with a post about it, and you always needed to come ready to class to be called on. Essays due every couple of weeks too.

Please do not take this class. The workload compared to other writing classes is simply outrageous and not worth your time. While you will surely learn more about how to improve your writing, the price he demands is not worth it (especially considering that you have other classes to do well in).
