A veteran of this course. Do not take this course unless you are talented at mathematics.
This is a difficult course to teach, and he does a fine job; nevertheless you will struggle.
The worst teacher I have ever had. He cared very little about his students and when i went to his office to ask for help he told me i should just quit because he didnt want to help. I have had tough teachers, but they at least were approachable. He was horrible. take the class from someone else
I loved this class. He weeded out all the people who shouldn't have been in it, and truly made it a good accelerated class. Would totally take a class with him again.
Dr. Laetsch is a for the most part a fair grader, a very clear instructor, and makes sure that you know what you need to for the next level. He will make you work hard for your grade, but for good reason.
goes off on a lot of tangents, and jumps around so that its hard to follow. He is willing to help, but hes not clear at all. The best thing about the class was that i had already taken it.
Ok, he's hard. I don't really like the way he doesn't teach the stuff that will be on the homework, just let us figure it out for ourselves (or not) and then treats us like idiots when we don't know what's going on. However, when he does teach, he's pretty good. If you don't like lots of homework every day don't take this class.
bad teacher... i had to drop the class part way through because i had a d (i've retaken the class with a diff teacher and had one of the highest grades...). he's a very unfair grader and takes points off on tests for stupid things. i really didnt like his class...
Very hard. If you don't write a paragraph explaining how you got each answer on HOMEWORK you'll do terribly. He assumes you can't explain it if you don't. Slightly funny, but just not very nice
Expects students to magically learn everything themselves from a poorly written textbook. Also, his homework is insane. He want tons of written explaination with each problem, so doing a regular homework assignment of anywhere from 12 to 40 problems can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours.
He knows the subject back and forth. Nearly everyone fails because they are too lazy to put any work into it... at first it appears to be the easiest class you'll ever take, but it isn't. Laetsch does a GREAT job, and the material is worth knowing. I was one of the few people who passed... out of ~25 who began the semester.
He's so good at overcomplicating stuff. He makes you hate mathematics.
Laetsch knows the subject matter very well, almost too well. He sends out a barrage of emails daily and is constantly making addendums to the already lengthy assignments. He generally makes us re-do an assignment 10 times while never directly telling us why; having the students figure it all out isn't bad, but a nudge here and there would help.
he is very very hard!!! he knows the material so well and he is so smart but he cannot relate the information and teach it to the students. u have to write a paragraph per question...i do not recommend!!
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. He knows the material, but does not know how to teach it to you. He makes you explain every problem you do in your homework assignments, just showing your work is not enough. Ridiculous. Stay away from his class
nice guy, horrible teacher. doesn't actually teach how to do a proof. he says that he doesn't want to show you how to prove something because there is more than one way of doing it. multiple homework assignments every night. each homework is at most 5 problems but they are worth 60 points each. very few people pass his class.
Expect this class to be difficult, but incredibly useful. Dr. Laetsch is a stickler for details, and assigns a lot of homework. Pay close attention to his comments on your homework and you'll learn a lot in this class and do well on his tests. When you get done, you'll feel like an expert on proofs, and you will be.
***Please if you have Ted get out of his class. I breezed through Math 124 but when it came to his class I found it to be the hardest class I have ever taken. Horrible at explaining, takes of points for stupid mistakes, grades homework like it is a test. This guy has no life. DON"T TAKE HIM!!!!!
Dr. Laetsch will not tell you how to do a proof but will never hesitate to fail you and the class numerous times until some percentage passes. When asked for help on a proof at a Q/A session before a test, he refused based on this policy; the first problem on the test the next day was that exact proof.
The quizes for me were hard to stay on top of but if you do the homework and do it correctly you will be ready for a test. I believe he is fair on what is given on the test. But do the hw and explain your answer for sure
Amazing teaching. You will learn math the right way.
WORST TEACHER EVER! SPARE YOURSELF, NEEDS A PARAGRAPH EXPLANATION FOR EVERY PROBLEM, I HAVE NOT YET PASSED A HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT.
Not a good teacher at all. Needs a huge explanation for each question. I have not yet passed 1 assignment, test, or quiz. He only tells you what you're doing wrong and commonly made errors but never tells you how to correct them. Save yourself & NEVER take a class with him. He will spend SO many classes lecturing on the "importance of equal signs."
Terrible. I took honors precalculus in high school and got an A+. With Laetsch, I have no idea what my grade is going to be, but I have very low expectations. DO NOT take this class. This weekend we had 7 homework assignments. This is the worst class I've ever taken. It's more about the proper way to present a problem than the proper way to do one.
IF YOU GET THIS TEACHER SWITCH OUT!! thats what I did, he went over "equal signs" for entire class hour!! He doesnt do class notes and never tells you what section your learning he just gives out homework and grades it totally different. I showed my new teacher the homeworks this old fart graded, and even he was confused on what he did.
demoralizing and patronizing
Clearly an intelligent man with no idea how to instruct. If he were teaching an advanced calculus class I could understand his methods but this is PRECALCULUS you have to teach not just assign and grade...
Absolutely do not take this class if you want to feel like you belong in college.
Awesome Professor. Very difficult class but he makes it interesting and has a good sense of humor. If you like math, go to his office hours and do all of the homework (there's alot),. you'll succeed. He responds to effort, so actually attend the class and be seen by him often. Everything he does has reason that is useful, he doesnt waste class time
The class is hard but give some effort and you will do well.
This guy is no good. I will give it to him that he knows his stuff, but does not know how to teach it! Because of his inability to instruct, homework seems like rocket science. I'm the type of student that loves challenging classes, but this is awful. Do not take him if you actually want to LEARN.
He is a great professor. Everything he does in class has meaning, and all the homework is relevant. He's very picky about homework, which he should be. If you don't want to be challenged, then don't take his class. I was pushed harder and ended up learning more than any other math class I have taken.
Some of the other reviewers said that he doesn't know how to teach. He does know how, he simply chooses not to. I think he thinks his teaching style is rigorous, when really it is just extremely unhelpful. Much of the time material will be given as an in-class project/HW before it has even been taught. Very frustrating.
This guy has a real problem with both grading and teaching. He will give bad grades on homework if he doesn't like it. It doesn't matter if it is correct. He puts RTI for read the instructions but on some papers he puts RTFI, this shows how much he wants to work with the students. It is beter to repeat a semester then to take a class with this guy.
Laetsch is a fantastic professor. The course that he teaches quite often, and the one I took (323), was created by the Math Department to bridge the gap between computational courses (100/200 lvl) and the 400-level grad math courses. This is exactly what Laetsch prepares his students for. If you do not like this class, abstract math is not for you.
Condescending beyond all belief. Spent twenty minutes of class time explaining how staples work, and where they should be attached to papers. Has an actual diagram on the course website showing where to put a staple on the paper.
Do not step foot into his proofs class if you don't care about math or are worried about having to work hard. It is a guarantee that you will work your a** off. He assigns multiple assignments per class, so you will be spending hours nightly on those. Don't be discouraged when you get 10/100 on your assignments. GREAT CLASS if you want to learn.
This class is really nowhere near as bad as people are saying it is. There is homework due just about every class, which is kind of time consuming, but not too bad (plus it doesn't count for your grade). The tests are pretty fair, the group projects are pretty hard. His lectures are sometimes repetitive, but overall he is a good teacher.
Nice guy, horrific teacher. This class is hard and he found a way to make it harder than it really needs to be. If you're feeling ambitious, you'll find a way to get by, but otherwise be prepared to take this class with a light schedule. Very time consuming.
Laetsch is a demanding teacher yes, however, you will learn how to write proofs in this course. He is very willing to help via office hours or email and is committed to teaching the material. DO the homework, there is a lot but he grades it all and the tests are very similar. Yes, you have to work hard in 323, but he delivers the material.
This class is the hardest class I have ever taken and can become very frustrating when you continually fail assignments. HOWEVER, if you attend review sessions and office hours, you will pass. He's very helpful and is a nice guy. Just be prepared to work extremely hard.
You either get him or you don't. The class distribution was (for this semester, at least) an inverted bell curve. If you understand him, you'll get an A. If you don't, however, it will take a great deal of work to pull out a B, as he doesn't know how to explain something other than his way. Take with someone else if you can.
Ted Laetsch is a truly excellent teacher. He probably works harder and puts more effort into the class than any of the students do. All of his assignments are specifically tailored to what students are having difficulty with. The class is very difficult. I had a 4.0 math GPA and got a B in his class. However, I also learned more in his class than any other. If you listen carefully, read carefully, think carefully, try hard and ask for help, you'll do fine. Email him a lot. He always responds.
Prof Laetsch simply assigns work that he has not shown you how to do thoroughly and correctly. Homework grades get marked off drastically from missing steps he has never shown you. Tests are similar. Projects are difficult in that he never shows you what he expects. Hard to get an A without a lot of work visits to office hours. AVOID if possible
Massive amounts of homework and projects, which are super time consuming, but are exactly the things that help you to realize your mistakes. He puts a ton of effort into the class (several emails a day). So, it's on you if you don't succeed. It isn't a easy class with Laetsch, but I feel like I am better at math because of the work he's had me to.
WARNING!Do not take his course even it's honor section. No focus in teaching. You always have to learn by yourself. And the exam always cover what he didn't teach. So for GPA's sake, drop his course as soon as possible.
Professor Laetsch is the most condescending professor I have ever had. He teaches the material in the most basic form and then expects perfect knowledge of more complicated variations in the homework and docks points for absolutely everything. Unless you feel the need to repeatedly write out his Homework Policy page for homework avoid this class.
He is the most hypercritical teacher I've ever seen. He didn't teach too much thing in class and asked you to learn by yourself. HW grading is ridiculously harsh. You have to do the homework EXACTLY satisfied his willing. Otherwise points lost .Sometimes you have to do the SAME problems several times just to satisfy his fastidious demands.
This guy is ridiculous. If you plan on doing the same homework multiple times and getting zeros on every homework assignment with "No" written all over it, do not take this professor. Soon to receive my first fail in a class in my entire life :) :) :)
Knows his stuff and explains well, but is a ridiculous grader. Half our class just failed the final and about a quarter got less than 37% - nobody got an A. I'm praying for a curve because i'm probably getting a D. Avoid if possible.
Worst grade I've gotten, & it was from exams and homework grading. Calc 2 is difficult regardless, but I took this in high school, understood it, and got a B, but because the credit didn't transfer.. I got a D, a lot of NO on homework (I understand hw is to help you, but pts. off for "not simple enough??), & just utter frustration. He tries though.
One of the most challenging courses I've ever met. Lots of homework and the exams are actually not easy. However, You can be a proof master if you listen to him carefully. He'd like to help you in his special way, which requires you to think more. But always be ready when taking the course, coz if you're not, you might fail this and I'm not kidding
Very helpful teacher and a really nice guy. Class was easy but it was cool that he tailors homework to what he sees students struggling with. Wish more teachers did this. Highly recommend.
Laetsch's class is ridiculous. Math 122B was really easy for me, but he destroyed every student in our honors section. His answers are super vague, homework is graded like exams, and you are penalized for the most pedantic of errors. He doesn't use D2L either, so you never know what your grade is. drop this class ASAP, even if you're good at math.
Dr. Laetsch did a superb job of instructing this course. He prepared numerous lessons that effectively taught the material and corrected student errors. He graded EVERYTHING, gave tons of feedback, and was always available to help. I have never seen an instructor work so hard to teach a course. The course was a bit challenging, but very doable.
Teaches topics clearly, then assigns homework on topics he either didn't teach yet or it far too challenging based on what he taught. Even reading the textbook doesn't help much. Toughest grader I've ever experienced. Overemphasizes the most basic concepts and not the ones students have trouble with. Spends the first 5 weeks on homework format.
Get ready to write lots of proofs. Laetsch assigns a lot of homework and sometimes the same homework multiple times, but do EVERY SINGLE ASSIGNMENT! Many test problems are from homework problems so find out the right solution, and understand the proof steps for every proof you do and the class will be an easy 'B',not an easy 'A' though.
Clearly understands the content but doesn't have a clue how to make students get it. When asked question, basically repeats himself and moves on. Tests are brutal and make up essentially the entire grade, and are very difficult to prepare for because of how vague the content is.
This class had 2 sections with 70 students. At the end only 30 were left. His is no help what so ever. Using his T.A for was worthless, if she showed us how to do a problem and we did it on the test is was marked wrong. If you asked him how to do a problem he wouldn't show you. Be prepared for 60 plus hw assignments that do not help.
I would NOT recommend taking this class with prof. Ted Laetch. Good and funny guy knows what he is talking about but terrible professor. You'll do the same homework again and again without any specific reason. Mostly talks about how to submit your homework rather than teaching. If you understand what he wants you'll pass or else you won't
This had to be one of the hardest Professors I've ever taken in the 3 years at the University. Clearly knows the material, but has no clue to how teach. Destroyed many people's GPA. Started with a class of 70 dwindled down to about 20. Avoid him at all costs.
Professor Laetsch assigns insane amounts of homework per night (2-3 assignments) that take up to an hour for each assignment. After completing entire assignments, if the words you used aren't the exact words he wants, you can easily wind up with 576 on some homework assignments. Terrible lecturer and I would never recommend this class
Ted Laetsch teaches the most ridiculously hard version of this class I've ever seen. There are few tests and your grade is nearly 90% tests. Homework consists of repeating the same exercises throughout the entire course in addition to new material so there is TONS of homework. His instruction is basic, and his grading is disproportionate to it.
Laetsch is the pickiest professor. You are docked half or full credit for any mistake on hw/exams. You don't know how you are doing until he curves the class at the end because the grade distribution is so horrible on every exam. I'm a senior with a 3.8 GPA and this is the first class that I will fail here.
Set A is the set of all professors at the U of A s.t. their syllabus contains egregious amounts of sass, they grade like an angry 12 year old, questions in office hours are responded to with blank stares until the student "sees their error", and exams are beyond too long to finish. Ted Laetsch is in the set A. Do not take him. Even if you must.
To be fair, 323 is naturally just a mental brutal course. Be ready to get repeatedly beaten down by abysmal homework grades--frequently because this class has a LOT of homework. He's very, very nitpicky, but he does give lots of feedback, so use it. Despite the suffering, when it's over, you will know proofs. Just remember that.
He says he teaches primarily through homework. However, the "feedback" on homework is typically, "NO." Figuring out what he wants to see is more important than actually learning to read mathematics or how to write proofs. Also, he is frequently sarcastic and condescending in class-wide emails. Even if your math GPA is high, avoid this teacher.
I've always loved math but this professor made me hate going to class every day. He takes points off for trivial things and spends more time in class complaining about the way students stapled their papers wrong and made simple formatting mistakes than lecturing. Tests are on a curve but he takes points off for tiny errors. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
He taylors to auditory learners. If you are a visual learner or a kinestic learner take another person if possible. Half the class notes are posted online, and he does not go over them in at all. But he references them all the time. He did not really give good feedback on the homework. Material at the end of the class was really rushed through.
Laetsch does not really explain things well in class all the time. There are many times where you have to teach yourself many topics he goes over in class. I learned most of the material in this class from other sources since Laetsch never really explained things well. He is grades very harshly which at times is unneeded. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR.
yes he is a tough grader, but go to his office hours and let him help you and you will be fine. He is also hilarious and very nice person.
Great prof. He knows his stuff and does an amazing job explaining the material in a way that we can understand. Lots of homework, but it does NOT count for credit unless it raises your grade, so it's solely for learning purposes. Tests are definitely doable if you've kept up with the material. Always available outside of class, and super nice.
I'm interested in Math. Thanks to him, my enthusiasm for taking such courses in U of A has gone entirely. If you want to get 20/100 for answer not fulfilling his 'criterion' or 50/100 for inappropriate margin, feel free to take him.
Despite the harsh grading of the prof, the course itself has serious problem. Actually I'm confused why the university make such proof course mandatory. To be honest, 80% of students in the math dept are just trying to get a degree and delve into a field which has nothing to do with serious math.
I am minoring in Math at UA and have never gotten anything below an A in any Math course I have ever taken. However, for the first time in my life I will receive a C. If you are a straight A student who takes grades seriously, do NOT take class with this professor. He doesn't use D2L at all, way too much homework, etc. Avoid at all costs...
I honestly don't understand where all these negative comments are coming from. He explains topics clearly and spends more time on material that really matters. There is a lot of homework, but that means you can mess up on an assignment and be virtually unaffected. Tests make up most of your grade, but there are also group and individual projects.
1. don't take math courses at UofA. 2. drop if you get this professor. He is such a tough grader and will roast you, but not in a good way. His office hours don't help. He doesn't teach in class; all he does is give pop quizzes and goes over homework problems.
This may be the most condescending person I have come across. Writes a handful of proofs on the board but spend most of his time telling you something that is trivial to the course. 55 homework assignments, he will ruin you for missing something as simple as a word. Will do trivial examples and turn the material up 10 times on the exam. Stay clear!
This professors lectures were the most pointless things in the world. He would go over the homework in class for an hour, yet I would leave feeling no better about my knowing of the material. His office hours are also very unhelpful and he is not a very willing to help in class. Tests were made on word documents off the top of his head. DO NOT TAKE
probably the worst professor Ive had in college so far where class time was meaningless and homework was pointless because if you messed up on one part of a question he won't give you any credit for the problem. tests were made up of 8 free response questions that were hard to do and if you messed up on any you pretty much got an F on the test.
Worst professor ever. You will lose point for any detail you miss on homeworks and exams.
I don't really understand what seems to be the problem with his teaching. Follow his guidance and be attentive in class and you will do great. Honestly, everything is taught in class. No external resources are needed. He's one of the great math teachers who cares about teaching.
Honestly one of the worst professors I have had at any level. Grades homework in an extremely unusual way. If any part of the problem is wrong you will receive 0 points, and the feedback he leaves on your homework is extremely unhelpful. I am very disappointed that professors like him are still hired by schools. Horrible asset to the school.
