Best teacher I have ever had! Who ever wrote the previous ratings was an idiot!
All profs need to take a lesson from Rebard. His main focus is getting the students to really grasp the material and not simply memorize.
He loves to teach through stories. That always helps me.
awesome professor, take him for all philosophy classes, helps you understand material, every st. thom professor should learn from him.
A very good teacher, very thorough
One of if not the best professor I ever had. Definitely the best philosophy professor I ever had.

Simply the best teacher at UST; He went above and beyond the clarify difficult material. Was great in the classroom, and also gave me valuable time outside to help me understand Philosophy. Smart, professional, organized - a great prof.
Great teacher and person. presents philo at a very real and "down to earth" manner. he has a great ability to take complex philo concepts and wrap them in the simpiest of words. behind the "ease of understand" there is a brilliant phil
What is everyone else smoking? Don't get me wrong, Rebard is a smart man, but he wants to hear what he says, and everything else is wrong. Match up you "opinion" to his, and you'll be fine. And only having three grades in a class is not good
A litte eccentric, but overall, he motivates you to think. He will try to intimidate, but the best way to approach him is to actually know what you are talking about. He will catch your b.s. anytime.
Rebard is not a good teacher. It's hard to know what he wants from you. On tests, I put down what he has been teaching us and I got a D. My friend put down crazy Chinese philosophy that had nothing to do with what he taught, and he got a B!!! Go figure.
Dr. Rebard is the best professor I have had in college and that is saying a lot because I have had many wonderful teachers. Some may find his unwaivering opinions troubling in our wishy-washy world, but I find it refreshing. His classes have really challenge me and I have really enjoyed them.
This teacher changed my life! he is awesome, he makes u think and reconsider your life. He is not hard if you are a thinker. His lectures are interesting if u like filosophy. Usually has two papers and two tests.
Repeats himself A LOT... Interesting lectures... loved the class
I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Rebard. He changed my life. I learned soooo many valuable things from him. I took him as many times as I could (4, I think). He is the most positive and influential professor that I had at UST. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
He was not helpful and made no sense. Does NOT catch your b.s. because that's what i wrote on tests and managed an A- for the class. He is very disorganized and the lectures are terribly boring. He is a SLOW talker, makes it even more boring.Really think before taking any of his classes
It's difficult to explain why Rebard is such an effective teacher, but he is. Much of his effectiveness lies in his personal goodness and fidelity to truth. It's contagious!
Rebard is a fantastic teacher, however, as this message board has proven, morons need not apply. People will always disagree with the greatness of teachers with strong opinions, but he is wise, truthful and loves to impart his knowledge on his students. That IS the definition of a great teacher.
Rebard's class was... strange. I liked him very much as a professor, but he was extremely disorganized, which I can't stand. Good man, good class if you can handle the ambiguosity.
Rebard has very strong convictions, so wishy-washy folk need not apply. But I've had better teachers who were just as strong in their beliefs and just plain better orators. Rebard is utterly disorganized. So disorganized to the point that he forgot to assign a paper.
Rebard could be more organized, but I enjoy the way that classes are open for discussion on topics that arise and not set to a rigid schedule. This is not high school and I don't need a professor to baby me by setting up lecture modules and worksheets. Rebard's classes allow for intelligent debate.
Rebard is okay. After taking a few classes with him everything I've noticed that he uses the same examples over and over again. He isnt too clear in his lectures. Definitely picks favorites, so talk a lot in class and agree to everything he says.
Horrid class. Slept through most of it, ended up with a C. Hard to pay keep up with what he's talking about half of the time. Didn't learn much either, as most of his lectures were just rants.
Incredible man with incredible passion for his work. Always timely, walking in right as class starts and ending his lectures right on the minute for when class ends. Not difficult at all, and repeats himself in different ways so that everyone gets what he's saying.
great guy, open to discusion. If your not interseted in the subject the lectures might be kind of slow but if you are its awsome. very knowledgeable. easy in my class we had to write one paper, take a mid term and a final (all easy A's if you pay attention.) cool guy to talk to after class
Boring, some examples over and over and over. if you don't understand the concept through the example he choose to prove it then you will never understand the concept because there are no other examples. One positive note: he seems interested in the topics.
Always play favoritism. Be aware! Try to stay at his good side as you can; otherwise, you will fail the class. If you stayed at his good side, you do not have to do any work and still get an "A," not "A-". Very biased and ****.

Rebard is an unintelligent lecturer. Rebard is egregiously unfair, and will grade you based solely on favoritism. He never read your papers or essays, but will give you a random grade (and it based on his knowing of you or not). If he doesn't know you, you will definitely get a bad grade even though your papers are highly-qualified papers.
Dr. Rebard may seem disorganized, but he's really passionate with his teaching. Some may think that he's only talking to those who he knows, but i didn't know him and in some cases, did not agree with him. The best way to get his attention is to make sure you have a valid argument. He will see through anybody's crap.
Rebard is fair, passionate, and open. He tends to linger on side issues for the sake of students' interests.
THE BEST THERE IS... PERIOD.
Very passionate. We already know he was Peter Kreeft's student in Boston, foremost expert on C.S. Lewis. Likes Chesteron, Etienne Gilson, and Jacque Maritain. His epistemology class was AWESOME!
Good teacher- kind of strange- but I liked his class a lot!

very interesting. gives great examples.
Doc, is extremely passionate about philosophy. His passion shows in his lectures. He is however, a little strange. But he is a wonderful teacher.
Don't leave the university without this class! A life changer. Rebard is the teacher we all should have and all should want our children to have.
Rebard is the best hands down!!!!! He makes you really understand the topic and he really cares about his students. I am really going to miss having him as a professor. If you hear that he plays "favorites" that is from the people who play solitare on their computer in class. He is the best by far TAKE HIM!!!!
He was not a good teacher. He rambled on about unimportant things. He would spend three lectures talking about the same thing with little new information. People may like him because he's not really hard but his lectures are pointless. An unfair grader. Grade has little to do with work done or participation. Pulls them out of a hat?
A truly great professor...everyone should take a class with him and find our for themselves why others and I believe he is the best!
really bad teacher. He rambles on about whatever he feels like. He DOES play favorites, And it is true about him pulling grades out of a hat. I got a B- on the paper but got an A in the class. Not thai'm complaining about an A, but I consider myself lucky to get that grade. Some of you may not be so lucky.
Human Person and metaphysics were two of my favorite classes. Not because of the course content, but because of the professor. This teacher is one of the most friendly people i have ever met. Anyone who said thet hated the class or didnt do well probably took the course as a blow off. You just have to go to class all the time and listen and your ok
Good professor in that he really wants you to take something from the class and learn the concepts for life...either you like him or you don't. He likes it when students discuss, but theres no pressure...the most important thing is to some to class and b on time. And good notes will get u an A on the exams, usually just a midterm & final.
Excellent!! Ethics isn't just a 3-credit course; he teaches principles (and more importantly the application of them) that should be ingrained into your life. Does go off on tangents but if you're paying attention, they all relate back to the point he's making. Does make you think, which some people find that to be an inconvenience.
Dr Rebard is condescending and rude at times. HE does play favorites so watch out.
the most life changing professor at our university... take him!!!
Doc truly has arete!! He make everything make sense!!
Rebard is the one, if not the best, you can take at st tommy! Hes easy to talk to, enjoyable, and has great taste in clothes. haha. take him if you want to learn, not if you want to just blow off your years at st thomas.
All I can say is I was disappointed. Make sure you talk a lot in his class, whether it's about the football or basketball, or better yet how to play a musical instrument. This guy is extremely biased on the way he grades. I am an A student but I recieved a B in his class. It didn't matter how much I studied. I hated being there.
Keep your mouth shut and you will be fine... Once you cross the line with him (without even knowing where the line is) you're on his bad side for good. He insults people daily. He does seem to genuinely care about his students, but for an ETHICS teacher he handles himself pretty immaturely. If grades are based on his personal feelings, I'm screwed.

hes gone crazy now
Plays favorites and if you're not one of them- forget it- you might as well not exist. Everyone talks about how great he is- so overrated. He's totally arrogant and should really NOT wear sandals- either get a pedicure or cover those things up!
i thought it was just me that thought he had favorites. i like his lectures, but his grading it biased
As far as Doc goes, he does not essentially play favoritism. If you show up to class on time, never talk and listen he will pretty much like you. Is it that hard? Is it bad to like good students? Those who complain the most about Doc usually are complaining because he did not like them based on their own actions. Show up on time and pay attention.
I have heard he has gone totally crazy now! I seriously recommend you to pick another teacher. He is totally weird, WATCH OUT!
Yes, he certainly does call on students who actually speak up in class and not those who are quiet but that does NOT mean he plays favorites. I listened (rarely spoke) attended classes, and studied for his tests and he will most certainly grade fairly. He doesn't know my name but that does NOT effect my grade.
Good teacher, picky grader. For metaphysics, we only had a midterm and a final. Even though he gives you a notebook that pretty much a synthesis of what he teaches, he tests you on what he said in lecture. I failed the midterm because I didn't study the notes i took during lecture. Just pay attention and DO NOT skip and you will do fine.
If your goal is a good grade, for the sake of the grade, you are missing the point.Paraphrased from one of the last lectures I attended from Doc:"as the years go by you will be able to remember less and less of the specific lessons from college. The idea is to learn the way to guide your life." If you want to fake it, know that is your decision.
He does NOT grade easy. There are only two grades in this class, a midterm and final! Goes off on a lot of tangents. Although he does essentially give you a book of notes, he tests on what he ACTUALLY says in class instead of what is in the book. He teaches a lot of life lessons and is overall an OK professor but I would not recommend him.
Brilliant. Dedicated. Fair. Inspiring! Highly recommend.
Passionate professor with lots of great stories to connect to his lectures.
Taking him was a mistake, He's really hard. 99.99% of us are not philosophy majors, and he gives you hard time. He thinks his class is the only one. Some of us are full time students taking 12-15 hours.
Professor Rebard enjoys making his students suffer. I had a 4.0 GPA for 3 semesters. Until I took his class. He does not grade easy. If he doesn't like you, you wont pass. I never made less than an A in my college career, but he gave me a C- Because he disagrees with my opinions. and personal beliefs. Avoid him at all costs.
Dr. Rebard is a bad professor. The fact that there's only 3 grades in the class (midterm, 10 pg paper, and final) is unfair. Only 2 People made a B in the mid term. Class average was a C-. If he likes you you'll pass. other wise you won't. Don't take him.
Rebard is the worst professor ever. Do NOT, I repeat Do NOT take him. He will make regret going to college.
Rebard Will crush and scatter your dreams and walk over them. This guy is very fool of himself. Don't take him. Class consists of a VERY VERY difficult midterm, 10 Pages essay (He takes off 10 points off if you place a comma instead of a period) and a final. If he likes you, you'll pass. (hes VERY pious).
The syllabus was one paragraph and didn't lay a clear grading rubric or any idea of assignments or tests. Attendance was important in order to get the lecture notes but not vital as he emailed them out. Only 3 grades- midterm (3 essays), a ten-page paper, and final (3 essays). He graded very leniently and I managed a B+ somehow!
Dr. Rebard is honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. Taking his class is an unforgettable experience. He is very helpful and his lessons are life changing. It was a privilege to have him as a professor and as a mentor. If given the opportunity, you must take him !
Rebard's class depends on the atmosphere of the class. If your class has even one person willing to discuss the topic with him, it will not be boring. The key to his tests (1midterm&1final) is to study the review sheet and notes he gives (not difficult) and simply write what you recall from lecture or notes. Has changed 10 pg to 5 pg paper recently
attend, take notes, review his handouts, do review sheets (make study group if possible), ASK HIM if you have any questions (in class office hours) OR ask tutoring center. He understands the struggles of modern education and the faults. connect with him and he will help you succeed. Be the avid, responsible student you OUGHT to be- UST expectation
Great prof- difficult subject but works hard to make it easier for you to understand. Has changed to become slightly more accommodating in recent years, but you do need to stay on his good side by simply being inquisitive and asking questions! Philosophy is difficult, so keep on top of things, fair amount of reading, gives review for test (2) 2015.
I loved taking this class with Professor Rebard. He values respect and punctuality, and he appreciates questions and discussions.
He just sits in front of the class and talks. No pwpt to follow along, nothing. If you miss class more than once without an excuse you will be 'eligible to flunk' in his words. You could write down an exact definition from the notes he gives out or what is exactly said in class for the test and still not enough. Unless you are phil major, just DONT
He begins classes with a Q&A and summarizes previous material. Read assigned notes, pay attention to lecture, and review terms and self-tests. He is helpful, and everything is there for you to succeed. He's objective, so all you need to do is take responsibility for your work instead of expecting to be spoon-fed/ an A by default.
Despite a very unorganized class, I actually learned and got something out of Dr. Rebard's class. Read each chapter and takes notes during lectures because some answers to the questions his textbook that he made are only found in the lecutures. Only a midterm, final, and 8-page paper. Do every question and term and he's slighty picky with the terms
Very unorganized and tough class. There were only three assignments the entire semester and while that sounds fun and non-stressful, the midterm and final did not have a review and the essay is 10 pages. Although he has some fun stories and seemed like he could be a cool guy outside of class, I would not take him again or advise anyone to either.
Dr. Rebard is clearly passionate and well-versed in Metaphysics. His lectures are somewhat difficult to organize, but they closely follow his textbook. He doesn't take many grades, but they are quite simple if you get a good general idea of the concepts and vocabulary. His words are incredibly inspiring and I learned a lot.
Pros: EVERYTHING you need to know is in book of notes (buy from him for $20). Lectures are 100% based off this book. Explains metaphysics very well and relates it to real life. Fair grader on Essay and Exams, but do your part. Cons: ONLY 3 grades (Midterm,Essay,Final). Class can get boring. MUST read and ask questions or he will do the asking.
Professor Rebard is a life changing professor. If you don't care about the subject matter, maybe try growing up a little. He truly cares about his students and wants to equip us to live our best lives. Get to know him.
Went into this class off of the recommendation of a friend after they had taken Rebard's class. After demonstrating your interest in the material, he'll respect you as an adult. He's the best prof. I've had. I'm not the brightest student, but this was by far the best class I've taken--it singlehandedly restored my belief in the existence of God.
Difficult class but not impossible. Definitely talk to him during office hours- he's more likely to be lenient if he knows you. Talk to him about the paper & he'll look over what you have & point you in the right direction. Tests are very hard so pay attention to review questions in back of book. He follows his notes closely. Form a study group
I greatly disliked this course and Dr. Rebard. The subject matter and lectures just seemed like one whole ideology course where the professor just sat and ranted for an hour making very few points and telling students how they should live their life. The test were quite difficult and essays were doable.
Professor Rebard is a gem at St. Thomas. His class is manageable if you show up, do the work and participate. He likes to tell anecdotes that go along with his lectures so attendance is very important. The course material can be boring at times, but it's philosophy so it's to be expected.
Unless you have a burning passion for metaphysics this is not the class for you. Majority of the lecture was Professor Rebard talking about how our generation is screwed. I wish I took a different professor. He was often rather rude and yelled at our class for things such as taking notes when he did not think it was note worthy.
Professor Rebard really cares about his students. He expects the best out of each and every single one of his students. He is deeply interested in knowing what students think and offers "real life" philosophy. You will be a better person for taking his class!
One of the worst professors I have ever had the displeasure of having, he not only yelled at someone for yawning, he also picks favorites and never posts grades. One time he went on a rant about how was upset that people were late to his class, but one of his "favorites" consistently was late. Do not recommend at all good grade only if he likes you
Attendance is mandatory but otherwise the lectures are not necessary for comprehension. Everything he says comes straight from the book he wrote. This class may be better in person but I would recommend a different professor if you take this online.
Be careful if considering taking this professor. Lectures are a tangent. Read the textbook thoroughly and do not misinterpret it. The meaning he provides is the "correct meaning", according to this professor. 3 papers only but has to be super "specific" to what HE wants to see you learn and interpret the world through his eyes.
Rebard is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable about the world and has a lot of wisdom he wants to share. You will always learn something new in his class, as long as you pay attention. He has a textbook that he requires you to have and it is the KEY to passing. As long as you understand that book youre solid. Only 3 required grades.
Professor Renard is a professor full of knowledge but his class is not well organized. He makes you by his book that he wrote. He has very biased points of views on political subjects and will say and repeat that the way he thinks is the correct way. He assigns lectures for every class but there is only one midterm, one final and one essay.
