arrogant and loves the gators
Not a bad guy. He does coordinate the chemistry labs very well. His exams are on the tough side, but are do-able. Organic Labs are alot of work. However from what I hear other universities have it much worse than we do, so I am not complaining that much.
Pros: Scales grading across TA's so really hard graders have to bump up scores. Cons: Semi-hard finals. Chem 2 Labs graded on accuracy.
Not helpful!
Dr. Eve is one of my favorite professors ever. He is very helpful and fair. He is interested in his student's success and he has a great butt. ;) CLD
very rude, not helpful, tas unfair
He is SO SO SO RUDE! Think TWICE before even asking him a question. He will NOT hesitate to yell at you, ridicule you or embarrass you in front of others. Has NO sympathy
It amazes me when I see pple complain about Dr. Eve. He is one of the most caring and dedicated professors at UM! He is always willing to help out a student who is having trouble. He is tough though but not as bad as at other schools for lab. Make sure to wear your safety goggles!!!
first off...whoever put the chili pepper is an idiot cuz he's not hot. secondly, he can be a very rude and judgemental person, and sometimes really nice and helpful. the final is haaaard and almost impossible to pass.
Ok the ratings i just placed are for EVE, he is rude, doesnt help, and he has 1 mission in life, to hate kids and be a prick to them. however, i do have to say his TA's are amazing i had Chensung Wang and he was the best TA ive ever had, now your work during the year is graded by the TA, the Final Exam made by eve is hard and questions are retarded
He is not the lab teacher, but the person who writes the final for all chemistry labs which are very hard. You basically need to memorize everything...yeah everything. You need to know all procedures and results like the back of your hand. Just a heads up because there is no way to avoid it if you are going to take a chemistry lab.
Not the TA, so thank god, because my TA was awesome. His final is freaking impossible. Try and get a different lab person.
I thought that Chem lab wasn't that bad. You need to study really hard for the final. However, it's college, isn't it? If you know everything back and forth you'll do fine. I got an A- in chem lab.
Ridiculously hard for one credit. Have a high grade going into the final because most students grades go down after it.
Eve is an arrogant, rude, proud (you know what) he really shouldn't be teaching at UM. Seriously, take someone who'll respect you and teach you well. You can't ask him nothing!! he acts like he's doing you this great favoor.
Chemistry labs are BAD. Eve and MOST of the TA's are the reason it is so bad. The labs arent usually that difficult to do, but the TA's take so many points off if it isnt written perfectly. And the final is so damn impossible because you need to memorize everything from the manual and the retarded "making the connections" book.(For only 1 credit to
Only meet with Dr Eve once and he seamed like a good professor. Class was taught by the TA. Main problem was that the CHM 151 class was not at the same pase as the labs so it made class a little difficult.
By far the worse professor at UM. I have never encountered a person that wants students to do so badly. Avoid him if you can, but if you have chem labs its pretty much impossible. His lab finals are impossible, and sadly he knows it.
Labs are taught by TAs. The final is hard !I read my manual 3 times and got a B+. The test is very tricky. You have to know EVERYTHING. Make sure you have a strong GPA throughout the semester, I ended up with an A in the class because of it. so don't slack off. But it is not impossible to get an A, just very difficult!
TERRIBLE. thats all.
Chem Lab is hard! It is taught by TA's and the final seems impossible. I got a C on the final, but I still got an A in the course because I tried very hard on the lab reports!
Dr. Eve is very caring about his students. The reason he is so harsh with grading and very hard (especially the final) is because he wants you to do well. People may say what they will but I STILL remember my labs from CHM 113 an CHM 114 because of him! Great help on the MCAT if you ask me!
Needs to change the course curriculum to something more related to what is actually taught in the CHM 201 lecture.
All of the labs are taught by TAs. I was fortunate and had a pretty chill chemistry lab TA. Just study the lab manual for the quizzes and put effort into your lab reports and you're fine. I didn't think the final was that bad, but it was definitely a challenge. However, this class is a lot of effort for only one credit :/
Honestly chem lab isn't that bad but it can also depend on your TA. Do your experiments carefully and know what you are doing. For the final, you should know how to do all the math, the reactions in the experiments, and potential errors. Study your pre-labs, quizzes and lab reports and you're golden for the final. Got a 90 on it and 95 in the class
I have never met someone so disrespectful and uncaring about his students. It seems to be a challenge for him to answer even the simplest questions respectfully. Emailed him asking to make up a lab, gave me 800 words of university policy and an ambiguous response, all while managing to be so condescending that I wanted to hit my head against a wall
Labs honestly depend on your TA. I got lucky and got a pretty decent TA whose quizzes actually weren't impossible. Try to get as high of a grade as you can in the class before you take the final, because the final is DEATH. Eve doesn't curve the final, but he does curve the class grades. I ended up with an 87 in the class but it curved to an A-.
Difficulty of class depends entirely on your TA. Final is way harder than a one credit class final should be, take it seriously.
The class itself was easy and really interesting, because my TA was a sweetheart; however when it came time for the final, I studied all night and still only managed a C. When I emailed the professor (Tegan) about it, telling him how hard I'd worked, he was condescending and very unhelpful. But unfortunately you need this class if you're premed.
Terrible. Oversees all the chemistry labs, but they themselves are taught by TAs. Writes the final which is extremely difficult and specific. Not friendly at all. Would avoid if possible. In all, way too much work for a one credit class.
The kind of worthless final that will destroy your GPA. This class almost killed my 4.0 for a 1 credit lab
This guy seems to thrive on our unhappiness. His finals always destroy people's grades in the end. He is very unfriendly and unapproachable.
CHM labs are NOT taught by Tegan Eve, but rather by TAs. I've had good experiences with mine. You don't see Tegan Eve often, but when you do, he is very unapproachable. I've never had a good experience with him, and he can be unreasonably mean. For lab: put in good effort on pre/post labs and reports. Final is awful but you'll survive 3
This only refers to Eve's final exam- which is disproportionately difficult for a 1-credit lab. With 10 experiments, the questions are all multiple choice and roundabout asking "which of the following is false"- things you could only know by just memorizing procedure. Likely the most terrible experience you'll here. "Teaches" orgo lab as well.
The absolute worst experience of my life. The topics covered in the lab manual are quite helpful for both grad school and the MCAT. However, I have never met someone as condescending and unfriendly. Writes the final, which asks random questions from the entire lab manual. I would these labs somewhere else if possible.
absolutely the worst professor not only in the department nor the whole school but since the history of professors the enlightenment era. He should not be allowed in school at all not even for a second. horrible guy and ugly from inside and outside person acts like 10 years with tears his eyes every-time you speak your ideas. DONT TAKE HIM! ugh
He is extremely unapproachable. While every other TA had the opportunity to select questions for the final, he handpicked the questions for my TAs final. Apparently only 1 in 4 students are allowed to can get an A in his labs so he gave our TA a hard final to drop our averages. He also stood outside our lab room and watched us take the final exam.
Super hard especially the Orgo Labs (even though they're not accuracy based). So much work for one credit classes and final is so difficult
One of the most disrespectful people I have ever met in my life. I do not really care what my grade is. This guy acted in a bad way with me because I used a graphical calculator in my last lab quiz. I used to us it throughout the course. He yielded at me and I explained to him that I did not hear him saying that dont use it. He was really the worst
He is not only the worst professor, but the worst person I have ever met in my life. I don't understand how he can be at UM. He is so unprofessional and has nor respect for people. HORRIBLE!
He's definitely not the nicest person, but I didn't find orgo lab to be terrible. The TAs grade the labs SO lightly (I never got below a 95) and the quizzes are doable if you read the lab manual a few times before class. The final is hard (study a lot!) but he curves it a ton. Even if you get a 60 and do well on the labs and quizzes you'll be fine.
Exceptionally worthless material and overall a joke of a one credit class. Learned nothing the entire semester and seemed as if the entire final was based upon useless memorization.
TAs are great and experiments are okay. Final will make you regret taking organic lab at UM.
Cant get any worse
I don't know what these people are complaining about. If you show up and do the minimum amount of work, you will get an easy B. Put in a little extra effort and you get an A. It's a lab, people. Dr. Eve actually cares about those students who care about their education--not students who complain about everything and who want an A for doing no work!
A 40-50 multiple choice final that requires you to know both the "Making the Connections" and Lab Manual experiments FRONT TO BACK. All for 1 credit. Seriously? The amount of effort required to do well on a 1-credit class final is ridiculous. I offer an alternative: take Orgo I Lab separately during a summer semester at FIU.
Gen chem is totally different. His orgo lab final is IMPOSSIBLE. Way way way harder than orgo lecture way harder than literally anything else. I took higher levels math courses like linear algebra , topology but that is easier than his final. The lab work itself is fair game but the quizzes and final are way different. Harder than lecture by Colona
I went to Dr. Eve to discuss what would be on the final and would recommend others to do this too. The final is almost completely composed of calculation questions from various experiments. If you practice these beforehand, you will be set. The labs are not hard, but they are graded based on accuracy so try your best to avoid error.
The amount of time that is required for this one credit class is absurd, but the ABSOLUTE worst part is the final. Many people have no idea how to study for it. The final is also 25% of your grade, and it's known for dropping people's overall grades from an A to a C. Dr. Eve's grading criteria for this course needs to be revised.
This class will depend completely on your TA. You have to make sure that you have a lot of padding before the final because the final is nearly impossible. Some TAs are going to be harsher graders than others, so watch out and try your best. Again, you NEED padding in your grade before the final to get an A.
He is responsible for is the final and final grades and overseeing all the TAs. Orgo lab final is doable and since the average tends to be pretty low for some reason, he curves final grades so it's not impossible to do well. Just do well on lab reports and quizzes and you can do mediocre on the final. He does his most to ensure fairness
All that work for a mediocre C. Watch out for the Final, it will kill your grade. What's even worse there's no study guide for it.
Take a chill pill buddy, no one is giving you 40K a year to fail hardworking students who are ten times as intelligent as you.
The final will ruin your grade. Even if you get an A on all the lab reports and quizzes in lab the final which is impossible to study for will take you down a letter grade.
Orgo1 lab was bearable. Based on quiz each class on the lab going to be performed and questions are tough if you do not study you won't do well on quizzes. Put jug some effort and can get an A on the reports. Final at the end of the semester was not terrible just study over each lab very very In depth. Was a curve so that helped, but to work!!!
NEVER take him! Extremely tough grader. He is unfair at all. Not a nice guy. TAs are tough grader too. You spending a lot time on everything to receive a C or D. Confusing grading criteria, they wont explain why it is wrong if them mark ur report wrong. Change another professor if you can .
I missed a lab once because I got into a car accident and when I went to tell him that he all in all said "tough" so I didn't get a makeup lab and got an F on the quiz, the homework, and the next days prelab so that was fun and good
Worst professor ever. Awful man. Horrible person. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, he refuses to help students or even care about the tough situations they may be in. He is incredibly rude, inaccessible and spends more time thinking of rude things to say than he does making his grading criteria which is so confusing and dumb. Rude rude rude!!!
Very bad.... very very bad professor
The class is manageable if you put in the effort. You need to put in a lot of time every week in making the lab reports. For remote students, Prof. Eve uploads videos of him doing the experiment; at the beg. of the video, he explains the concepts which is very helpful. The EOC was very fair and honestly easy. Study your lab reports and pre-labs.
There was no instruction on the actual material during labs so I don't know how we're going to be given a final exam. Make sure you know when all the deadlines are for experiments.
I personally havent met eve, but the final is rough. Make sure you memorize the manual. The labs are very TA dependent and some grade extremely easy and some dont. Depending on the TA you could have like a 95 in labs and get a 65 on the final and still have an A
During the middle of a pandemic Dr. Eve was not understanding or caring at all. The experiments and the worksheets are doable, however, his final was nearly impossible to study for, and he thought it was a good idea to schedule it a day after everyone was traveling home (not even during finals week). There was barely any time to study for it.
The absolute worst professor I have ever encountered. Does not care about students and cares more about his own pride. Awful person. Should not be in charge of labs especially the finals. He is the worst. Does not do anything in the best interest of his students. Not helpful at all never email him he either will not get back or be so condescending
The class isn't bad, just very writing heavy. However, this professor is absolutely horrible. Doesn't care in the slightest about his students and makes that abundantly clear. Extremely disrespectful and condescending, really acts like he's too good to be talking to you, even when emailing him about serious issues. Not sure how he's a professor.
Dr. Eve makes it very hard to get an A . This year 91 was an A so curve wasn't as large as most stem classes. Finals are notoriously hard and easy to fail (I heard scores from 20s- low 80s, and 1 A), but if you focus on the theory behind every experiment as you write your lab reports it you'll do well. Final is 20%, so aim for 100 on the other 80%.
This teacher never provides any useful information, he will give you inexplicable deductions from your assignments but does not write down the exact reasons. He will only write a few points, but when you correct these places, there will be new places where he deducts points, and you never know where your next assignment will be deducted.
He acts like the lab is our only class. I worked my ass off for only 2 credits Two reports due each week that are 8-15 pages. The final is atrocious. The questions about each lab are so specific and you have to know how to do all the calculations you learned. Almost everyone fails. He curved a letter grade though (i.e. B+ to A-).
Dr Eve himself was very chill and nice (others say not so much) But the course was taught solely by TA's. Nothing was graded until the day of the final and my TA def threw in random grades. Final was awful, it was on all the labs. ZERO feedback ZERO help and ZERO grades back, at that point you couldn't ask what to correct or anything. I would avoid
This was the WORST class I have taken here. He doesn't do anything whether it be for his TA or students. Talks down to us and tries to act better than everyone without doing or helping in any way. This course makes you write a 5-7 pg paper every week which is so much work then depending on your TA you can have an easy or tough grader.
this lab is unfortunately unavoidable if ur a STEM major but it's still awful. you won't know what you're doing 80% of the time, the time to complete worksheets and labs is short and very precise. honestly depends on your TA but most of them are psycho and the final is based on everything you've ever done, so start memorizing the manual now.
1. honestly depends on who ur TA is 2. not easy to reach unfortunately have to take as STEM major, but avoid at all costs
Dr. Eve's chemistry labs are some of the worst classes you can take at UM. In the lab, you'll have no idea what you're doing most of the time, and a 7-10 page lab report is due every week. All the TAs grade reports and worksheets insanely hard as well. After this, a lab final at the end of the class is given which is virtually impossible to pass.
I hate the class with a burning passion. I don't recommend this professor. Nothing really makes sense, the TAs grade rather harshly, and it's way too much work with short time limits. I'm always curious about what inspires chemistry professors to provide the most mind-numbing work imaginable with absurd expectations.
Only taught by TA, don't rely on them. There's a video where he explains the experiment for that week and he does a good job. If you don't watch those, then your experience is going to be like the majority of the people who wrote negative reviews. For this lab, you can't depend on anyone but those videos and yourself. It's as simple as that.
TAs under Tegan teach chem labs, but chem labs have 0 interaction with him. My TA spent class time with me and gave me my grade, fair and square. Tegan changed it afterward. I tried to get it changed back but he refused and was a complete dick about it. The grade had little impact on my life. But you should know that he is difficult.
Forces students to buy his books. The questions he assigns in his book as homework are vague and brain-degrading when doing it. Taking his one credit class, if you want to excel, you will spend around 1 hour for pre-lab reading, 1-2 hours for complementary video instructions, 2-3 hours for post-lab questions and lab reports per week. Not worth it.
soooo many lab reports. honestly depends on your ta of how easily you will be graded. we had difficult quizzes every class. the exam was terrible and you cant even study for it on top of all your other exams. i did well on reports cause i had a good ta but the exam was awful
Watch the videos that Eve posts on blackboard because the manual does not go into detail about the procedures for the lab, if you don't you're going to go to lab extremely confused. The final is hard but doable just know ALL the math that was in the pre-labs and experiments. There's also weekly quizzes so study the manual really well.
Terrible, terrible professor. Tegan Eve appeared only once during the semester during the final. The final itself is ridiculously difficult (average was around an F) and I memorized the entire lab manual to no avail. I do not understand the point of such a difficult final but focus on the quizzes and reports and you should be set for a good grade.
The final exam is EXTREMELY HARD. Did not talk to one person who felt confident about the final exam. Class ran entirely by the TA, never once met Dr. Eve. My TA, Gili, was AMAZING. BEST TA. Really made sure we understood the labs and did her best to prepare us for the monstrosity of a fin al exam we were given.
You don't see him. It depends on your TA, mine was great. Eve provides videos of the experiment, watch those!! He does a good job with that, but READ the manual, your final grade depends on it. If you study every detail of the techniques used, you'll end up with at least an A in the class because the final exam is mainly techniques and post-labs.
Worst professor at UM hands down. So much work for 2 credits out of class and 6 hrs a week in class. Now in CHM206 he gives quizzes before every lab that are very difficult.
Awful professor. TAs run the class and give quizzes reciting the lab manual down to the last minute detail. Class is about memorization more than actual chemistry. Don't have a photographic memory? Will not pass.
No lab organization, never interacts with students, extremely difficult final for no reason, and took up more of my time than chem lecture despite being only one credit.
The worst lab I've ever taken. TAs can be ok but the general course is disorganized and unhelpful. You don't really learn anything. Also, the final quiz sets you up for failure, almost nobody does well in it.
The class is completely unrelated to what you learn in lecture and is much more difficult than the lecture itself. If I could skip this class I would...
This Lab is very difficult. Most things that are on the lab quizzes were never on the prelab. They test you on the most irrelevant details. The final quiz/exam of the semester is built for failure. Not worth the single credit it provides.
If you value your mental health don't take this lab
In utter disgust and disbelief of this man. Doesn't show his face for the ENTIRE semester, until the last week when he hits everyone with the most impossible final exam they may EVER TAKE. It's literally designed for you to fail, and the average is in the F range. Why he is so determined to make a one-credit lab such a nightmare is beyond me.
Did not see this professor until the final exam. His labs are very hard to understand, and many of them are not even correct in the manual. The lab quizzes are very hard, considering there are questions on there that were not covered in the manual. The final quiz was AWFUL. They are designed to fail students. They tell you to memorize everything.
I hope the school reevaluates this professor. Take this course with a grain of salt because it is set up to make you fail the final while having quizzes and pages of lab reports due every week. It should not be worth 1 credit, if anything, 3 minimum. Regardless he is the only one in charge of chem labs, unfortunately.
Labs took a ridiculous amount of time for a class that is only worth 1 credit. TAs grade everything and you can't choose the TA you get so you might get a tough grader. If you get a tough grader not all hope is lost though because the class gets curved. Final lab exams are HORRIBLE and everyone always fails. Don't know why they have them.
It's a 1 credit class. 1 CREDIT. Why oh why did we need a final for a 1 credit class??? Especially a final that's so difficult and references things even the actual chemistry course doesn't cover? Plus, the classes are super uneven across sections, some TAs are super chill while others are extremely difficult.
Zero empathy for students, bad instructions
The amount of work necessary for this 1 credit course is ridiculous. The final exam is near impossible to do well on because the questions are so hard for no reason and aren't covered by any course material.
Simply chaotic from start to finish. The experiments often do not match what the manual instructs, some reports come out to over 15 pages, and the final is 40 hyper-specific questions you will only know by reading the manual cover to cover ten times. If he didn't have a monopoly on the chem labs, I'd take anyone else. But, we have no choice. Sad.
Labs are extremely time consuming and some end up being 15+ pages long. This is frustrating, considering it's only a 1 credit class. I spent 6+ hours a week working on these reports. The experiments are complex and difficult to understand, event after reading the lab manual. The final was ridiculous. Disappointment with the structure of this class.
Eve doesn't teach any labs, they are taught by TAs. All that he does is make an impossible final exam worth 20% of your grade that everyone fails. The exam focuses on minor, random details from his 2 lab manuals making it virtually impossible to prepare for unless you've memorized both of his books. One of the worst professors at this school.
The actual lab isn't that bad, it's a lot of work but it's manageable and depends on your TA. The issue is the final exam, it is almost impossible. It's probably the toughest exam you'll ever take at UM and it's only for a 1 credit class! The only unbearably hard part of this class is the part Dr. Eve directly writes...
Dr. Eve is someone you will see once or twice all semester. His TAs run the lab and each TA is different with their quizzes and grading guidelines so you either get really lucky or the complete opposite. No structure for how his TAs give equal and fair quizzes across different sections leaving each quiz tough. Time consuming for a 1 credit orgo lab
Tegan Eve is by far the worst I have encountered in my life. He's extremely rude and the final at the end is nearly impossible to pass with. It's a one credit class which doesn't make sense as to why there is so much work for a lab. He should be fired from the University of Miami for torturing students and stressing them out like this.
This man was rude especially to me when he had to work with my absences halfway through the semester as I had to leave school for 2 weeks for medical reasons. Anyways, the majority of your grade and experience in the course depends on what TA you get. The final is VERY hard; so specific. The only way to buffer this is by doing well on all reports.
The entire lab is taught by TA's until the final where Dr. Eve writes an impossible exam based on super specific stuff that he put in the lab manual that he wrote.
Eve is a great professor if you hate good professors. Makes the final impossible for a course that he makes his TA's teach.
I performed exceptionally on my lab quizzes and reports just to get a B+ because of the most heinous final I've ever taken, which is harder than the lecture final. Besides that, your grade depends on whether or not your TA is chill. How to fix this? Make him teach the gen chem, orgo 1, and orgo 2 LECTURES. Trash the puka T.eve you're not cool.
WTF WAS THAT FINAL. Did fine in lab. My TA was a little strict with grading but that final would have david goggins screaming "they know me son." there is no need for that final to be that difficult and theres literally no way to prepare for it. On top of that Dr. Eve does even teach labs his TAs do, youll probably see him 2 times all semester.
The final exam was not that bad. There's a lot of stuff you won't know but if you read the manual and have a general idea of what you're doing in lab, the final is doable. The assignments are tedious, but if you do them well the first time, you will do well on the final. Dr. Eve will try to scare you but if you put in some effort, you'll be fine.
The chemistry department at UM is a complete joke. There is no reason for students to be getting high A's on lab reports and doing solid on quizzes just to be screwed over by an impossible and hyper specific final. This class will harm your GPA, because the one person you see twice a semester decides to write the hardest questions possible.
Professor Eve has a lot of negative reviews for courses containing labs. This course does not have one and he prepared us very well for each exam. He also gave multiple assignments to bring our grade up including one that brought up our exam 2 score by 10% just from completion. If you go to class you should be fine.
got 100 of all the reports, which take forever, and 100 on all the quizzes just to end with an A- because of the most diabolical final exam. He does not curve this final and the average is typically a 57. So disappointing you can put so much effort into the class just for the one final exam to bring your entire grade down. not understanding either!
Tegan Eve barely shows up but still defines you by a scantron. I got 100s on all lab reports and a 94 quiz avg, but one final exam ruined it. He's arrogant, dismissive, offers no support, and acts like he runs the place. TAs do better. Terrible person, terrible professor. If I could give negative stars, I would. He doesn't deserve to be a professor
Everything about this course is fine except for the final and the insurmountable amount of lab reports. That exam was impossible, but most people have to take this, so brace yourselves.
I believe this a great professor. I think that he is very caring because he bothers making videos for the students to be familiar with the content of the lab. I believe that even though there is a lot of work, no one said it was going to be easy. He is very efficient and does not like to waste time and he goes the extra mile for his students.
