PAPERS PAPERS PAPERS!! All you do is papers! I hate it! Not a fun class!
lot of papers but is an easy grader
No Comments
He is nice, but all you do is papers
No Comments
Very good teacher. Lots of papers, but an easy grader, and very helpful out of class
Mr. Bowers is a nice man, but his class is so boring and all he does is lecture. We have a lot of papers, and his grading style is a bit unfair sometimes. He is also unclear about things. Always participate if you take his class!
English Novel is a great class for the most part! Discussion is essential. If you don't like to discuss, don't take his class. However, the tests are essay and are fairly easy if you take notes in class. He gets to know his students on a personal basis.
He is very nice, but many of the european lit we have to read is very boring! Also,50% of our grades are based off of 2 papers, and I don't think he grades fair. Don't take this class unless you are really good at writing papers!
It's an all right class. You'll have to write at least 5 papers. Class participation weighs about as heavily as the papers. You have to work really hard to get a decent grade.
Great class, very good professor. Be ready to discuss and do your reading. Don't take this class if you don't like to read. He is always willing to help outside of class, and his exams are easy if you go to class and take good notes.
This guy is great... he actually makes even some of the most hideous texts I've ever read into a fun class discussion... lots of reading, but well worth it!
If you like to discuss def take him because he will love you if you discuss in class. The papers are pretty easy and he grades decently. Also just for fun- the man always wears blue
Great professor. The class is structured but fun
I am very happy to see that Mr.Bowers has high ratings this year. He is a very nice and helpful man. He is a very easy grader, but does give a lot of papers. He is interesting, kind, and sometimes funny.
Prof Bowers is by far the worst english teacher I've ever had. I've aced every english class I've ever taken until his. He grades inconsistantly and shows blatant favoritism.
Pay attention in class.Participate in class.Read your texts.Write good papers.Get an A.Midterm exams are easy if you do 30 min of study. He definately chooses favorites so get on his good side early. If you have any writing ability at all you'll do fine.
I think overall he is a great professor. Very nice, and willing to help. He clearly does have his favorites, and its hard to get an A, but not a bad class to take by anymeans- he is a very intelligent and well articulated man.
He is so boring and never really makes a point about anything, just beats around the bush. It's an awful class, I always dreaded going!
One of the finest minds you're apt to encounter at CofC. Also one of the most caring profs... if you do your part without whining or slacking. Great choice for ENG majors.
Lots of papers!!!
Loves his subject, even if you don't. Tough but fair. Very friendly and eager to help. Grades hard on papers, not so much on tests. If you show enthusiasm for your studies, he'll show it towards you.
What a good guy. I was sick and missed his midterm, what turned out to be my first midterm in college. He made special arrangements for me, though he did not have to. Very fair grader. Always open to hearing new views. Sign up!
really nice guy, quizzes once and a while on the readings (which aren't bad at all)- interesting class discussions. 5 papers (most of which you've already probably done before... 2 of them are more like essays) definitely a really good teacher
This guy is hard. Grades very harshly on papers and will not budge on grading. If possible take someone else, use him as a last resort.
Professor Bowers is not a teacher you want to take early in the morning b/c he has very boring class discussions but he is a nice teacher and is always willing to help.
Dr. Bowers is a very tough professor, but very willing to help you out if you do your part. I had an emergency in one semester and he was very caring and made amazing arrangements for me.
pretty easy class just make sure you read all of the texts...some pop quizzes and some announced and greads pretty rough on papers
I feel as though I did "A" work in his class. I went everyday, did all of the readings, and took really great notes. Still I only managed to make a "B+." Expect to read a whole lot in his class. He is an awesome professor that is worth taking. Just don't expect his class to be easy. Expect this to be one of your hardest classes. Holla!
I would take his class again for sure. Gives interesting lectures and offers quality help for papers. Very dedicated professor. I feel I really learned a lot.
I went into his class very enthusiastic, but he gives too many papers for the lack of clarification he gives for each. I would not take him again. Really, the only problems lay with his policy on papers. The rest of the class was interesting.
Hard grader on papers. Pretty much only grades in the class are papers and pop quizzes from the readings. The readings arent bad but it seems impossible to write a paper that he thinks is even somewhat good. Boring lectures...very monotone.
His tests are really easy. His pop quizzes cover vocabulary as well as the material and grades strictly on those. He does come up with some good paper topics and doesn't grade too harshly on them.
I had him for English 101- a MWF class- and he never let us out early or late. Now that I have him for 102-a TR class- and he has let us out 10 minutes late every single class day.If you take him, dont have a class after his.He teaches well and make sure you talk because that is a big part of the grade.Otherwise there are 4 papers and 2 midterms.
Great teacher hard on papers and prefers very concise style. His lectures are informative and discusion heavy so speak up. His literary choices are excellent and he provides a historical context for the selections. I'd take this class again if I could.
D-bag city. Very hard to please and assigns a lot of **** work. Poetry unit is hard and hard to stay interested. I had Dr. Thomas first semester and learned more about writing in one class than I did all semester in 102.
One of my favorite professors...very interesting classes. Not exactly easy, but the best ones never are. Papers and tests are not hard if you do the work and show it.
Amazing class. Professor Bowers is truly one of the great minds at the College of Charleston. Although it was one of the more difficult courses that I have taken to date, it was by far the most thought provoking and mentally consuming. Two exams, several papers which are thoughtfully and comprehensively critiqued. A must take.
Although I didn't care for the material that much, Bowers explained it in such a way that it was tolerable and even interesting. He likes to reflect on modern culture as we are reading these older texts, which I think is not only interesting and relevant, but also a good way to teach.
He assigns alot of work and you have to do the reading. There aren't any study guides for the tests and he expects you to know lots of details. This class was definitely one of my hardest this semester, but if you're really willing to put in the time and effort , you should do alright.
He moves very slowly and we get way behind in the syllabus, and his class always gets out a few minutes late. His tests are also all open ended questions and are focused on details that I found to be minor in class, and there are open-ended pop quizzes as well. I like English and am pretty good at it, but I did not enjoy this class.
Professor Bowers knows what he's talking about. He can be pretty funny too if you pay attention. If you go to his office hours and take his advice, you can expect your grade to reflect your work. A little unreasonable when it comes to missing class, but overall, he's a nice guy.
Very thorough with the readings, sometimes falls a day or two behind in the syllabus to make sure he covers everything properly. Great pace, great at keeping students interested and entertained.
Overall, Dr. Bowers is a good professor. He makes it clear that you must read the material and gives frequent quizzes to ensure you've done so. If you're a good at taking notes, then the exams shouldn't be too hard. The tests are very straightforward and he's a fair grader. He also allows you to redo papers if you're not happy with your grade.
He is an okay guy, but he is a bit of a push over in class (I mean this in the kindest way possible). He seems to like discussion but does not encourage it. DO NOT BE FOOLED by his in class demeanor. He will grade your papers HARSHLY. I underestimated him and turned in a sloppy paper. I suffered the consequences.
Mr. Bowers is a funny little man. Nervous acting and a little dorky. He grows on you though and by the end of the semester you will probably like him. His class isn't easy though, as you will be graded fairly but hard on any papers. He is extremely helpful, however and will grade your paper and let you re-submit. Good teacher
Dr. Bowers is a great teacher who spurs on class discussion and really cares about the comments of his students. His tests are not hard as long as you take notes throughout class, and he is a very helpful grader of tests, he even let us re-do our first paper for a better grade. I highly recommend taking this class.
Dr. Bowers is a very engaging professor. He insists upon a lot of class participation, and is a tough grader, but allows for resubmission of papers for a higher grade. Very helpful and understanding. He expects A LOT on exams. The textbook s used a lot. I would take another one of his classes.
Professor Bowers is a brilliant professor. Although the material was difficult, he managed to relate the text to modern ideas. He was a difficult grader, but allowed us to revise our first paper for resubmission. He made himself available for guidance with papers, and was genuinely invested in seeing his students improve.
Dr. Bowers is a funny, skinny guy that has a dorky, but fun personality. He is a fantastic professor that keeps class interesting with discussions, however he expects a lots out of you. His grading is kind of difficult, but he leaves a lot of room for improvement. He's also very willing to meet with you if you need help!
Dr. Bowers cares very much about his students! He gave so much feedback on each essay and kept in contact with me over breaks to help with any questions I had. He is quirky, easy going, and very knowledgeable about the subject. He is one of my favorite professors!
Worst ENG teach I've ever had. Rambles on unimportant literary topics & doesn't go over a good chunk of required material. Tests on title/author & PUBL. DATE!! 1st test- 48 works (incl 27 of Blake's SOI/SOE, most of which he didn't go over). VERY, VERY hard grader & if you don't agree with him, use SPECIFIC evidence to back it up. hatedthisclass
As a 200-level professor he's not the one to take for an easy grade. He's a merciless grader and is probably better for a more specific course. We didn't cover in depth very many of the texts required yet were tested on them. He's nice enough, but heaven help you if your papers aren't 50% quotations or if he catches you texting during class.
I had him for both 201 and 202. He's the kind of professor where if you write about his opinions of the text and do it well, you will receive a good grade. Be warned if you have a contrasting literary analysis from his. He will meet with you and tell you exactly what you need to do for an A, so do it. He tests on dates of works which is annoying.
if you don't write an essay or answer exam questions that's not about his opinions on a certain work, good luck trying to pass. also, he requires you to memorize dates of publication. and if you have a class ten minutes after his, you'll never be on time. he loves to talk.
I thought this class sounded fun and easy for a first year but all you do is read novels and stories (a ton of them) and learn about philosophers and what they think a good life is. Its interesting but it is currently my hardest class.
My favorite teacher this semester hands down. His class is a challenge, which I see as a good thing. He is incredibly smart and makes everything so clear.
My favorite teacher this semester hands down. His class is a challenge, which I see as a good thing. He is incredibly smart and makes everything so clear. I expected to be so bored with this subject but it's the most engaging.
The lectures are usually pretty dull, and Professor Bowers calls on people to read ridiculously long passages out loud that the whole class has already read. He grades exams based on criteria that he seems to make up as he goes along. Feels like your work is never good enough b/c he will always find something wrong w/ it. My least favorite class.
His lectures are usually pretty dull, granted it's not the most exciting subject. His grading is tough, he will always find something wrong with your work. Only really accepts his own interpretations and his tone towards student is annoyingly condescending. I suggest you always get him to look over your paper drafts before turning in a final draft.
Bowers is very passionate about Brit Lit so definitely take him for Eng 201. You will need to get the textbooks because there is a lot of reading. For the quizzes, all of the questions can be answered from the summary on SparkNotes. He spends the whole class talking about the readings. He makes a lot of jokes and tries to keep everyone engaged.
very enthusiastic professor, definitely take his class
Professor Bowers is such a cool dude and I loved listening to him lecture. The only downside to this class is that he grades pretty harsh and really wants you to work your butt off for an A. Also you get points off of your participation grade every class you miss.
He actually genuinely cares about his students. I never got a condescending vibe from him. I think he's just really smart. One of the few classes I want to go to.
Professor Bowers is as dry as they come, and it doesn't help that the subject matter of the course is also fairly dry. Beware of pop quizzes and keeping up with the reading is important. You will have two essays throughout the semester, he is a harsh grader so be warned. Exams are impossible, I dropped my English minor following this class.
Incredibly disorganized. His lectures follow no apparent structure and he goes on tangents all the time. He keeps lecturing after the end of class, and expects you to stay. Pop quizzes are tough, and hes a harsh grader. Not interesting, and for his exams he makes you memorize vocabulary and dates that he never mentioned in class. Awful.
Professor Bowers is a wonderful man who is passionate about English. I took his ENG201 course and its not for everyone. The lectures were very scrambled but interesting if you could stay awake. I felt like most students werent prepared for the exams as well as he expected because he pushed further than needed, skimming over exam material.
Mr Bowers is very passionate about English. He's well spoken and quite gifted in his smarts. Although he is a caring and even kind figure, I HIGHLY don't recommend taking this 101 English class. His work given is extremely different than the other generic English 101 classes, by that I mean exceptionally harder. LOTS of essays and hw readings.
I took his first-year class this year and when I say steer clear I mean it! My friends were mind-boggled by my workload. Many papers with harsh grading, quizzes, daily readings, etc. In addition, we had to print roughly 30 pages of readings a week excluding papers. The workload and content was way too much and difficult, especially for an FYSE!
Great guy but very hard class. A lot of work (readings,ALOT OF PAPERS, homework). He does want to help though so go to his office hours. He hates computers so be ready to sit down like its 1960 with no laptops and just talking lol. Great guy though just is very tough with grading and gives a lot of work.
Bowers is honestly a great guy. He truly cares about the students and their lives. Read the material, analyze it, and go to office hours if possible. Pop quizzes are hard, but 9/10 he ends up saying they're going to happen if you just listen to him. Reading can be a lot if procrastinated but easy if not done in one sitting.
He is willing to help with papers and gives good advice on what to do for them however this class took the fun out of writing for me. Make sure to print out the papers he tells you to and always be ready for a pop quiz. There can be pretty long papers if you go to office hours he may hurt your feelings but it's worth it for the grade.
I took his FYE (ecology and the literary imagination). It was not too hard of a class just a LOT of reading and the texts were pretty difficult reads. A few papers but it is an english class so that was expected. Pop quizzes sometimes so important to read texts. The tests are a lot of writing usually multiple choice, 2 short answer, and an essay.
A great, passionate teacher, very helpful if you enjoy English classes. I am not an English major, and I was baffled by the amount of workload in this class. SO MANY READINGS, two papers (difficult grader), long exams. I was constantly doing work for this class
Really nice (and slightly dorky) guy who is a fantastic literature prof. People don't like him because he pushes them to analyze and dig deeper into the readings, but that's exactly why I love his class! Just do the readings, try to draw connections between the texts, and participate-- he wants you to succeed!
He was a nice guy who cared for his students, but his class was not freshman-friendly. His test (mainly in-class essays,) readings, and paper prompts are challenging. I went in for help at least once a week and ended up with a 79.54... come on... I should have taken yoga instead.
I GENUINELY feel like a smarter student after taking this class! Not an English major, and this class was not my choice. BUT this is the best class I have taken so far in college. You get deep into the conversation and read some historical text that is so vital/relevant. Such a great, passionate professor, yet challenging, and LOTS of reading.
He was a great guy and really nice, but his teaching style just wasn't for me and as a freshman, this course was hard. Multiple papers throughout the semester that ended up being over five pages long. A lot of pop quizzes so do the readings! Also participation is heavily encouraged.
Would not take him again. Very rude and judgemental and expects you to know everything regardless of the fact that you're here to learn. All you do in class is read and discuss the readings and thats it. If you don't read you're probably screwed because he throws pop quizzes all the time. Discussion and participation is critical.
i think he's a fine teacher. he knows what he's talking about but it made me annoyed when he was clearly putting his christian beliefs within the curriculum, not what i thought the class was i would not recommend it
Really nice! He put some people off because he would give them reading (reminder that he's an english teacher) and would try to get to know the students at the beginning of each class. Just do the readings, they're only like ten pages each. You will have two papers to do but he gives you plenty of time, just a bit of a tougher grader for papers.
Professor Bowers is a very kind and smart guy. The people saying "All you do in class is read" or "pop quizzes on things we were supposed to read", obviously, you signed up for an English class! It's college, you are going to have to read. Dr. Bowers is a very educated professor and his British Literature to 1800s class was very fun and engaging.
I had him for two classes. Great professor, I learned a lot from his classes as a freshman English major, but I do not recommend taking his class if you are not an English major/freshman. He is a HARD GRADER when it comes to exams and papers.
He is a pleasant person outside of class but a very overbearing professor. He doesn't respect anyone's time and always runs class over a few minutes so you could be late if you have a class following his. He is also very critical and interruptive when you are participating or reading in class. Overall, a very obnoxious class to take.
If you are not interested in English or are not good at writing, please do not take this class. I've done more writing for this class than my actual English class, and you don't even get a credit for it. You NEED to do the readings, or else the pop quizzes will get you. Sweet guy, but not a sweet class if you're not amazing at writing.
Dr. Bowers is a great professor. You can tell that he is passionate about his job and does a great job of going into detail for all of the class readings. Typically, you will have to read something before every class but I found it manageable. There is the occasional pop quiz but as long as you are doing the homework you will be fine.
I felt like I was missing something when I took this class. He would assume you know a ton of things about religion, etc., and not explain it. Always ran class overtime. I didn't love the structure of the class; I felt like I could've gotten a lot more out of it if it were taught differently. Don't take him if you like your GPA and want to learn.
Professor Bowers is very knowledgeable but old-fashioned. He lectures without slides and doesn't allow laptops—notes must be handwritten. He's a harsh grader and extremely strict about attendance; miss four classes and you lose a letter grade. He's nice, but the class feels outdated and unnecessarily rigid.
He is a very hard grader. He makes conferences with students for projects and always tells me to do a different topic than I had planned. He would probably be fine for an actual english class but as an FYE it should not have been this hard. Take a different FYE especially if you aren't majoring in something related to ecology.
This class was really interesting and fun. He is very organized which was nice and he's very passionate about literature. The readings were all very interesting and relevant and this course was my favorite one this semester. Definitely need to keep up with the readings to make a good grade but as long as you do that you'll be fine. Great professor!
Don't take him if you have SNAP needs. Announces to the class if you have them bc he doesn't allow technology otherwise. Tough grader, but doable if you're an English major. Wouldn't recommend him to freshmen. 2 papers, 3 tests, some "pop" quizzes but he mentions them if you listen. Passionate but expects you to have previous knowledge.
As a senior and an English major, this class was unessesarily hard. It was extremely uninteresting and not engaging at all. Pop quizzes are pass/fail so if you dont get an A on them expect to have a failing quiz grade. Extremely tough grader, heavy weekly reading, and impossible exams. Bowers is very strict and does not care about student success.
