I wasn't excited about taking a sociological theory class, but I'm actually enjoying it. Terry is so friendly and always eager to hear what students think. I didn't like having a quiz every class period, but it did motivate me to do all the assigned readings.
He's not very good with getting feedback about grades, but is very energetic and interesting. Although the class is a hodge-podge if information, it's fairly reasonable.
the class is retarted. There is a quiz on the content of the syllabus thats worth half of what the final is worth. stupid grade sysytem. Terrys a nice guy but a horrible teacher. Have not really learned anything about soc. quizes are on non-soc book's content rather than thier relevence to soc.
This class was awesome. Money, sex, religion...what more would you want to learn about? Terry uses great examples to illustrate his points, and the books are actually interesting to read! This class was a welcome break from the rest of my awful schedule. TAKE THIS CLASS (esp if you need a SS credit)
Terry is awesome. Only teacher I ever had that really cared about the content of his class and how interesting it was. great readings, very interesting. Terry actually works hard.
Its obvious that he loves the subject and enjoys teaching it. TAKE HIM

Great teacher, but not much consideration for opinions outside of his own. Puts alot of effort into the course, and it shows
his class is intersting and he does different activites in his lectures. he is very opinionated and will argue or makes you stand by your comments

He's a really good teacher, he knows his stuff and makes the class enjoyable. I would recomment taking his class.
Had full knowledge of the subject. Very detailed and great teacher. Enthusiastic for a seemingly uninteresting subject.
Take his class. He gets all the points across easily and makes class interesting. Very easy.
Lectures easy to understand, nothing to hard to comprehend. Simple tests/quizzes.
Excellent teacher. Made classroom discussions interesting and engaging. Coursework was clearly laid out. Uses a "grader" to evaluate papers.
Good professor. I liked him.
The class was really easy and he presented material clearly. I just wish he'd gone beyond what was in the book for his lectures mroe often to make it interesting. I don't need to pay tuition for a book summary. Overall, a good teacher adn a nice guy though.
Doesn't believe in A's yet quizzes are fairly simple. Lecture's pretty much just a summary of the reading but there are times when we get into some pretty interesting debates. Not too bad overall
Many people's favorite sociology professor. Funny, can be sarcastic, can occasionally be testy. Definitely good at his subject. Doesn't grade too hard.
a little unorganized..but pretty nice and very easygoing...if you come to him with a problem he is helpful and the gsi's are great to ask for questions...overall pretty its a pretty easy, relaxing class and mcginn is good
ALSO HAD HIM FOR 305. TERRY IS VERY INTERESTING AND AN OVERALL COOL PROF. HE IS MORE EASYGOING IN TOPICAL CLASSES LIKE SOC OF RELIGION THAN PREREQS AND REQUIRED COURSES. HE HAS AN INTERESTING BACKGROUND. HIS OFFICE HOURS WILL ALWAYS PROVE TO BE INFORMATIVE AS WELL AS ENTERTAINING. IF YOU GO TO CLASS, IT'S PRETTY HARD TO GET A BAD GRADE.
Terry is by far my favorite professor ever. Sadly, I have now taken every class he teaches at the University... but if he decided to pick up a new class, I would take it. I took his religion class with almost no interest in the subject, just because he was teaching it...I loved it! Take a class with Terry before you leave the University!
Terry is a really cool and understanding professor. His quizzes are easy, but he limits the amount of A's he grants for overall grades. His class is interesting and often shows cool movies and brings in speakers.
Terry is a very good professor. Class is sometimes boring, but he can be entertaining, too. Quizzes aren't too bad, nor are the two papers. You do have to come to class though because attendance is often taken. You don't really have to read the books, because he summarizes them in class. Grading isn't overly harsh.
I couldn't stand this class. Terry taught in a way that always seemed patronizing to me. The class had a lot of potential, with interesting topics, but I found it completely useless and pretty annoying. It felt like a big waste of my time.
His grading system sucks. I got a 93 on the first quiz (2 wrong FYI), which was a 69th percentile, so I was getting a B, even though I had a NINETYTHREE! And on that first quiz he asked us the page number of a concept, not what the concept was...
He's a pretty laid back guy, but sometimes he can snap. When he has a bad day he will take it out on the whole class. The workload is extremely light and the tests are a breeze if you do minimal reading. Sometimes the lectures go off on tangents, and they rarely reflect the reading or test material.
Grading is ridiculous. Lecture is simple, however sometimes boring. If you take this class make sure you don't have Jamie as your GSI, she is awful. Terry is interesting however fairly liberal and often teaches through his own views. Overall a decent class, would be better without Jamie.
terry was my favorite prof this semester and he's really good, i'd recommend taking him for anyone, he really got me to like sociology and he's not too hard of a grader
he's really good and my favorite professor this semester! i would recommend him to anyone and he's not a very hard grader either
Great instructor, Interesting Class. However, the curve was annoying [25% A, 50% B, 25% C]...Not too heavy of a workload - mainly just multiple readings
Terry is a great lecturer, witty and intelligent. However, when you're taking notes he's wont to say "this won't be on the quiz" - IT WILL. So write everything down. Not too bad of a class, but if Jamie is your GSI be careful if you appeal a grade; she will not be so kind after that
Terry aka T-Mac was a great lecturer!! Just stay on top of the readings and you'll get an A. Highly recommend him
Great professor. Really interesting lectures. Likes to hear what students have to say. Pretty easy grader. You don't have to read the textbook or readings at all - whatever he goes over in class is what will be on the quiz. Highly recommended teacher.
Easy grader, but doesn't really know much. His quiz questions insult student's intelligence - he asks questions like "what page number is this concept discussed on?"
I like to refer to him as T-Mac... I thought he was a pretty awesome lecturer. He made the class pretty interesting.
loved topics presented in class
He made lectures interesting, tests were a little harder than i expected, i put in a lot of time doing the readings and it turns out i didnt even need to read them when it came down to tests...overall good class though
Lectures swing between extremely boring and very interesting. Class is pretty simple. Make sure you study the details for the tests
Fairly easy class, quiz questions were directly from lecture slides & notes taken during class, takes attendance randomly, had a bad experience with my GSI but he is an excellent professor.
Pretty good taecher, makes lecture extremely interesting. the one thing i don't like about him is that he uses powerpoint but he goes out of order (of the slides) A LOT and sometimes makes it hard to follow.
This was one of the best classes I have ever taken at U of M. I never got that feeling I get when I learn useless information because everything was so relevant and applicable to real life. Terry is very clear and understanding and always willing to help. The class is not a stressful class at all (3 quizzes and a paper) and it is pretty fun overall
The class was mildly interesting, and skimming through the reading was enough to get by. However, he grades on a ridiculous curve and also when the end of the semester comes, he takes the class average as well as section averages and adjusts all the grades to meet that-we had a few percentage points taken off of our grades, our GSI was even upset.
Terry is a fun guy. His lectures were fun and interesting. I didn't do any readings but did study the slides for the quizzes and I made a B+. Go to class because he takes attendance grades. Overall good class and I plan to take another sociology class with him.
Terry is really knowledgeable and a great teacher. He works hard to make sure his students understand the material. The class is pretty easy. It helps to do the readings because he tends to use stuff from the beginning of the semester to reinforce concepts later on.
This class was fascinating. If you like religion or learning about crazy cults you should deffinently take this class. It was the class that got my interested in sociology ( I am now a soc major).
Friendly, generally cheery guy. Lectures were relatively straightforward but if you looked only at the powerpoints, you wouldn't understand much about the class. He is willing to help and wants students to do well by asking if they understand the material. The bell curve grading is weird and the 3 assignments don't seem relevant, but they're doable
Attendance is mandatory via iClicker. You don't need to read the textbooks. The class is incredibly boring and most people just play on their computer. The only way you can keep up is if you look at the powerpoint to see what he is talking about. Frivolous grading system--100 point class, every exam is 15 points....
Boring lectures. Grading scale not very fair. Didn't help that my GSI was garbage. Terry is really nice though.
Great professor, kept the lectures interesting. Funny and always in a good mood. Make sure you do the readings. Exams (he calls them quizzes) basically follow lecture and readings but definitely not regurgitated. You need to be able to internalize material and understand every aspect of it.
Great professor. Really took an interest in his students and what they had to say despite the fact that he was teaching in a large lecture hall. People may complain about the curve but not hard to get an A at all if you study the slides thoroughly and take notes during class. Readings help but not completely necessary.
This class was pretty easy. Lectures were sometimes a little dry but Terrence is always willing to help and clarify any questions. Overall a good class, I would recommend.
This is easy class with a light workload. I stopped doing the reading halfway through the class and my grade didn't drop at all. Lectures are boring but useful. All you need to study is the slides on his powerpoints and you will get an A. Terry is a nice guy and this is a good class to take.
I thought Terry was a great guy but the curve in the class is the most obnoxious thing in the world. You end up hating everyone in the class as you compete for the 100 points that are given. Every point counts and you think the class is easy at first but by quiz 2 you will be studying for hours so as not to miss a single ? on the nit picky quizes
Lecture became boring (maybe bc it was 1.5 hours) but he tried to keep the class engaged. The quizzes are very easy. Study the slides. All of them. Overall, he is a nice guy, and he likes participation.
He was a fantastic instructor. He was always willing to help during office hours. He also encouraged students to talk during class and add their opinions. His class was interesting and the material was presented clearly.
Terry is a great guy and very willing to help his students. This class has a lot of reading, be prepared to do 20-50 pages per class. That being said, it's not very hard to do decent without completing all of the reading. The part I enjoyed the most was learning about Terry, he's led a very interesting life. Definitely take a class with him!
Terry is an interesting teacher. He lets the students make their own grading rubric, decide on what they want to learn, and then teach each other. It was really group oriented class.
Very clear in both the expectations for the class and in teaching the class. I learned a lot during the semester, and he presented the information in an understandable way. The grading can be a bit tough, but he is very open to helping you to do your best.
Terry is an awesome Prof! This was my 2nd course with him, and I want to take more. He is very laid back during class, and gives really clear course outlines, that he will change if need-be. We had 2 really fun group/indv. music projects, quizzes, and a take-home final essay. You don't need to know anything about musicology. Take a class w Terry!
Lectures didn't necessarily have anything to do with exam topics. Very all over the place. He was nice, but most of the class was based on biographical information of sociologists--almost nothing on sociological topics. Definitely not an enjoyable class.
Awesome teacher, with very helpful office hours. He knows his stuff, and is always willing to clarify whatever you may need help with. Take a class with him!
Favorite professor so far at UofM! Very engaging and funny lecturer, he blends theory, current events, and personal experiences very well in his class. Readings are manageable and lectures build upon them very well. If you come into the class with any interest in sociology or religion, you will love it, and it wont be that hard. Great prof!
Such a cool professor, but the class was very boring. Section was super structured and a lot of the stuff taught in class seemed easy, while the exams were a little harder.
I was originally very interested in the class, but it turns out the lecture discussions are just boring and poorly structured. Quizzes don't truly reflect the materials on study guide. Grading on the reaction paper is not very fair.
This class was pretty interesting but Terry gives the most unnecessarily difficult tests of all time. 30 impossible multiple choice questions per test. Only take this class if you have to.
McGinn is great! He is very helpful and will try to schedule a time to meet up with you if you need help. The way grades are set up, it is a bit hard to get a solid A. If you answer all the questions on the study guides he gives, you will do just fine on the small exams he gives. He is a great professor and I would def recommend this class.
Material was dry but Terry made it relevant and easy to digest. He held review sessions after every 4 lectures, and responded to class feedback throughout the semester when the curve was abnormal after the midterm. Exams are not difficult if you pay attention to what material he emphasizes. Sweet and energetic. Take good lecture notes & you're set
Terry is the bomb. This class is so interesting and he's very good at treating students like adultshis peers. He's very intelligent and wise; he has some of the most interesting stories. My favorite class and favorite teacher by far at Michigan, it's the one class I'm actually excited to attend! You'll do fine as long as you pay attention in class
The content of this class was very easy. However, there aren't enough points offered so everything has too much weight. There are only 3 15pt tests of 30Qs that are reading quizzes- not testing theories, concepts, or ideas. Ex Q: What was the ex used in chapter 3; who wrote which article? Absolutely ridiculous for a class that should be an easy A
His grading system makes it almost impossible to get an A if you don't ace every test, come to every lecture, and get full credit on papers. The content can be interesting and he is a nice, interesting guy, but this class is much harder than necessary. Also Evan the GSI is absolutely terrible so do not choose him for discussion.
He is very funny but better take his tests seriously: Meaning, memorizing the lecture slides or otherwise good luck in guessing multiple choice questions.
Terry was a great lecturer. The material in the class is very dry and abstract. Attendance is graded. Grading system is terrible. 100 points total so EVERY point counts. There are 3 exams, one paper and one group presentation. GSIs are strict with grading & exams are nit-picky. You will have to work hard for an A. Overall, I would not recommend.
Exams had nothing to do with the material and assessed unrelated questions to the topic of sociology. He is a pretty cool person and does provide entertaining lectures on a relatively boring topic.
Tests aren't relatively difficult and Terry is a great guy. Though the GSI's are tough graders on essays and group presentations. Discussion sections didn't help at all.
If you've thought aboutresearched stuff like this before (sociological topics like feminism or racism), this class is much easier. It frames the arguments you've seen into an academic perspective. Memorize the slides & exam is golden. The discussion sections are mostly GSI-led, so pick your GSI carefully (Linroy rocks, btw. He's chill).
Terry is an amazing professor. I never got bored of his lectures! If you go to his office hours, he is always nice and patient with you and he takes his time to talk to you personally to get to know you. Would recommend taking his class.
Soc 100 is a class that is very conversational, at times lecture can be vague when trying to figure out what is on the exam. I read the books when assigned and the day OF the test I went through every lecture and read them out loud. It got me A's on the exams, and there are only 3. Also, my GSI was really chill and layed back, so that helped.
Amazing professor! My absolute favorite this semester :D His tests were only 10% each and there were 4 of them so the class isn't bad.
Terry is a great professor. He engages his students, loves when students participate, and makes really funny remarks. Lectures are pretty interesting and there isn't too much reading. Also, the 4 quizzes are pretty straightforward as long as you look at his study guides, so there's no final/midterm you have to cram for.
T-Mac is the man! He is so cheerful and is a gifted lecturer. I would recommend taking the Soc. Topic course on Sex, Religion, and Money. The way the class is set up, it is difficult to receive a solid A. Tests are tricky and there are assignments graded by GSI. Work hard and you should do well.
Terry is the best professor I've had at this University. Lectures are engaging and insightful. Quizzes are simple and straightforward if you study. Papers are graded fairly and pretty open-ended leaving room for creativity and critical thinking. Participation in class is not required, but makes coming to class more enjoyable.
Terry is an awesome guy. Very knowledgeable and kind. The grading is straight forward but it's hard to get an A. The quizzes are more-or-less memorization tests and the papers are not bad at all. He's a great guy and makes coming to class worth it.
Everything on the tests are on his lecture slides, which he posts online, so your guaranteed A's on the test if you study the slides. His lectures can me a bit sporadic at times but he keeps everyone engaged because he is so enthusiastic about sociology.
He is a great professor, however the GSIs can be hard graders. If you attend lecture and study the study guides, you'll receive a good grade within this course.
Terry is an awesome person, and has tons of anecdotes that make class interesting. My only problem with this class is there is no room for doing bad on an assignment since it's a 100 point grading so if you don't do that well on one of the quizes that's only 30 questions it's easy to drop several percentages. Also, the grader wasn't him for essays.
You can get by without reading if you focus on the powerpoints. All of the tests are based on what's on the powerpoint. The tests can be slightly tricky. An A- is achievable but A will need work.
This professor is a pain in the ass. Plus, he is really rude.
For only a 100 level class, I had to work way harder than I had hoped to do well in this class. I studied for the exam by memorizing the lecture notes and that was not enough. You need to do the readings and pay attention to his lectures because there will be things on the exam that are not in the lecture notes.
I took this class thinking it would be fun, interesting, and a GPA booster. I was wrong. There is TONS of reading that you have to do in order to do well. You have a long paper that's graded strictly and a group project which he gives minimal guidance on. And not to mention it's really boring! We spent all of the semester on the history of soc.
Terry is great. His lectures are very well done and he is interesting to listen to. Your grade will definitely come down to your GSI, however. In my class, the general consensus is that two or three of the four GSIs were good (not 100% certain, I had a fantastic GSI). Will be taking future courses with Terry for sure.
Terry's lectures are awesome and convey the material very clearly.
Terry is a great professor. He may seem a little intimidating at first, but he just has an old school style. He brought our class in sweet treats on multiple occasions. His class outline is very clear and straight forward. However, it is hard to get an A because the course is out of a total of 100 points, but it is still definitely do-able.
Terry was an awesome professor. Each of his lectures are very interesting and he provides tons of real life anecdotes about sociology. I can genuinely say I learned a lot about the world through this class. It is hard to get an A though because the class is out of 100 points total. Would definitely recommend.
Good professor with interesting anecdotes to enhance concepts. Getting an A- is easy, but to get an A, you have to put in real effort!
Jeez, Terry is amazing. His lectures are fun and engaging--you can tell he loves what he teaches. Life-changing and inspirational professor, one of the best I've ever had.
Amazing professor- very engaging! Provides you with the knowledge and space to think critically about what is going on around you. Pushes you to take what you are learning in class and apply it to your life. He is the professor that inspired me to become a Sociology major. Not hard- tests all based solely on lecture (he posts slides as well)
Terry was just awesome. Very genuine guy that gives lots of interesting personal antidotes in class that relate to the topic of the day. The class is not heavy a heavy load but you genuinely learn a lot. I would highly recommend this class to anyone who is interested in what sociology is/ just wants a board understand of the subject.
If you took SOC 100 with Terry, then you will recognize some recycled content from the class put into a new context with SOC 295. That said, Terry is an exceptional professor, really cares about his students, and is fun to listen to. Just get used to hearing the same story three times. Also, most people are on their laptop most of the class.
Terry is a cool guy and teaches interesting classes but he definitely isn't a hard grader. You don't have to do a whole lot to pass the class but there's interesting content. He's a nice guy but definitely not a life changing class and it didn't really push me
Lectures weren't awful, but they also weren't very informative. After a few classes, it becomes clear that he acts pretentiously as a façade to cover up some sort of guilt. He projects his insecurities on traditional students in a condescending manner. At the risk of sounding mean, he's spineless.
terry's the best for soc 100
terry's awesome
not a very respectful person; not too difficult to do well in the class but definitely did not enjoy classes with him- extremely dull and ppt heavy
Terry is one of the best professors I've had at this university. He's kind and incredibly knowledgeable. You DEFINITELY have to show up, do the readings, and put in the work. But if you do, you will be sure to get a good grade. Plus, he's always willing to help outside of class if you need it. He sometimes gives EC for attendance as well.
DON'T take SOC100 if you want an easy intro class. The material isn't difficult but is graded on few points. An A- isn't too bad to get, but an A takes a solid effort. Lots of reading and memorizing slides. The problem is that it's so easy to lose points. Miss 2 questions on a quiz and your final grade is already down by 1%. Definitely overstudy.
Terry is great and a superb professor. Do not take this class for an easy A, although classes are only 2 days a week, there is quite a bit of reading and the exams focus a lot on that reading. Its a point system though so if you do poorly on the exams (like me) you will still be able to gain quite a few point elsewhere.
Terence is great but the class is not an easy A. Lectures were super interesting as Terence always told stories that related to the topic. But the class is graded on close to nothing. 15 pts/exam, 10 pts for paper, 15 its for group project, rest are participation pts and total100 pts.
Terry is the man. The guy is very intelligent and knows his stuff. His lectures are unbiased and entertaining and the requirements for class are pretty clear. Also, you don't have to do the readings to get an A, just pay attention and study the lecture slides, but they're pretty interesting and can't hurt to do
Terrys a cool dude. Made lectures interesting with personal stories. Lots of memorizing and reading (save a group project and paper). Graded on very few points. I put in a lot of work and still almost got an A-. Large part of grade comes down to whether your GSI is lenient or not.
Terry was a solid choice for Soc 100 - his lectures are interesting and he provides some really cool insight to certain situations. If your mind easily grasps natural science concepts and not social sciences like mine, this class won't be easy. Your grade is heavily determined by how much of the slides you memorize and how nice your GSI is.
Terry was great! His lectures were informative and unbiased. He's pretty funny and made sure to include examples on different levels to adhere to different types of students and their learning. You don't have to do the readings as the test content is lecture-based. Grading is based on few points and your GSI determines a significant chunk of that.
Terry was a great lecturer. He had a lot of stories to tell which made it easy to remember information. Tests were super easy; just memorize the lecture slides and you're golden. Easy class overall. I put in very little time or effort and got an A. However, this class is graded on very few points (100) which proved difficult for some students.
love terry!! super charismatic and cares about his students. Class was harder than I expected, but I definitely learned a lot
Terry is a great professor! I highly recommend taking his soc in the digital world class for a distribution requirement or if you're a soc major. Class structure is varied, which keeps class interesting, and he is very helpful in office hours!
first exam was hard but then I learned how to study and did rly well on the second one. got kicked out of class once for laughing... perfectttionnn. I do like Terry though. He's really enthusiastic.
I only signed up for this class cause it was the only one that fit in my schedule. The lectures are dry and the material is boring. The class is graded on very few points, so it makes it hard to do very well in the class. In his tests, he hides very specific details from readings that don't pertain to the concepts from class, making exams hard.
Terry wasn't bad. He lectures were very boring and the class was graded out of very few points. The problem was the GSI's. They were all horrible and tough graders. His exams weren't awful if you approached the answers from what you think he would choose and not what you think the actual right answer is.
I came in thinking Soc 100 would be a super easy class and that the exams would be common sense. That is not the case. You have to study a bunch and memorize names and historical things for them. Also, the class is only 100 points and your grade depends so much on your GSI. I didnt learn much from the class either. Mcginn is a cool professor though
I took soc100 because it's a pre-med course now. Not as easy as I expected. Straightforward quizzes- go to lecture, take notes on his stories, set aside 45 min per week to do the readings - you'll do fine. Essays/group projects depends on GSI, so get your points from quizzes/attendance. Strange guy, but he's fine.
Terry is my favorite professor at U of M!!! I've taken his soc 100 class and a smaller class soc 455 and loved him in both. He is funny, charismatic and wants his students to succeed. He is very knowledgable about sociology and you will learn a lot from him!!
terry is a nice prof but the study guides and tests do not always match up well, you go into the test expecting one thing and are sometimes blindsided by what is actually on it
Great teacher, but the grading scale is very rough. EVERY POINT MATTERS IN THIS CLASS. Study hard and you'll get an A.
Terry is a great professor lectures are interesting and full of his life stories and the class is really easy, only take SOC 100 with him!!
he randomly takes attendance which counts for credit. tests are dumb easy but you still need to study for them. hes a great, interesting speaker but its really easy to miss information since theres too much text on the slides and he walks up and down the aisles of the lecture hall making it hard to fully engage
Lectures are extremely boring. Terrible powerpoints, not very clear/well put together. Nice old dude with lots of personal life stories but they usually aren't relevant/helpful for the class. GSIs are awful. Worst GSI i have ever encountered for SOC 100. Weird point scale for the class.
The most boring lectures you will ever attend. There were only 100 points in the whole class so you miss a few here and there and your grade drops so much. He did random attendance checks so also go to class. There were four exams and a paper to write.
Second class with Terry and it was once again a great experience. SOC285 - Soc of the Digital World is a super interesting course and counts towards the digital studies minor. Graded on 4 quizzes, group blog, and group presentation. Quizzes were not too difficult and group projects were relevant and fun. Terry always made class fun!
Worst GSIs, unorganized lectures - other soc profs are easier
The examples and stories that Prof. McGinn tells in class helps solidify concepts. His slides oftentimes don't tell the full story, so paying attention during lecture really helps you understand material better. This class is super low-pressure if you study well before tests and put in the work. Overall, I recommend taking this class with him!
Terry seems like a decent guy but Soc 100 was unbearable. Don't take it if you don't have to, but if you do it's super easy if you put in minimal effort. The content is just super annoying. Prepare to spend an entire unit on communism. Also, the GSIs were laughably bad.
Attendance taken randomly in lectures. GSI was extremely shy and rude when approached with questions or concerns. The whole class was graded out of 100 points which makes it tough to get a good grade if you mess up on anything. McGinn definitely cares about his students, but this class is unreasonably hard for a 100 level course.
Lectures are detailed and uses plenty of examples to clarify basic concepts. The class has A LOT of reading though so be prepared to take the time to read. I took this class online and it was pretty low-stress. He covers the key concepts during lecture so if you miss a reading it won't hurt, but I would recommend doing the reading when you can.
The course is dry, especially online. Terry is a nice guy though who seems very caring and knowledgeable. The assignments are pointless and the instructions/difficulty/grading vary significantly across the different sections. The course is fine but would recommend Psych 111 or Anthrcul 101 over it.
Super nice prof who is genuinely passionate about sociology and loves to teach! He was always willing to clarify class content and is overall friendly
Not often you find a professor that makes you feel like a friend without having met them, he is that prof. Very easygoing and interesting, and makes an effort not to be pretentious. To top it off he is very informed of the topics he teaches, and backs up examples in lecture with real world experiences. Fantastic class and prof.
Terry is the best! SO approachable and really tells a story in his lectures. All around 10/10 guy
Professor Mcginn is easily one of my favorite lecturers at umich. He really cares about his students and his lectures are straightforward and really easy to understand. He also goes over the main points of all the readings in lecture so if you cant read them it really isn't a big deal. Sweetest guy and a great professor/ easy grader.
Terry rules. nuff said
This is my first year at Umich and Terry has been my favorite professor so far. His classes are so entertaining and he really cares about his students. I also got lucky with my GSI and they both were amazing and super lenient during the pandemic. I would love to take another one of Terry's classes. I am sure the in-person lectures are even better.
I just want to say this man accidentally missed a discussion section so he bought everyone giftcards. Truly just a nice guy teaching an interesting class! Take if you have the chance.
Terry is a great lecturer and his SOC100 is a very reasonable class. Show up to class, take good notes, and you should do solid on the tests. GSI's are responsible for about 50% of your grade (group project, paper, etc.). discussion attendance is required. Not my personal favorite class, but simple, solid class for social science credit.
Terry is an intelligent and kind professor. He gave the class a clear structure and had an exact breakdown of what makes up the final grade. Overall, the lectures were informative and to-the-point, and the content of the tests was very representative of what was covered in lectures. I would definitely recommend taking a class with him.
He is an amazing lecturer! Truly helped me to enjoy the class, the course, and the material. He is super caring with his students and very understanding professor! Would highly suggest any sociology course with him :)
Terry gave engaging and funny lectures. You can tell he really cares about the content and makes sure everyone understands. He often adds his own interpretation into lecture and tells stories that make the content more memorable. Grading is not harsh, one group project and an essay but nothing very difficult. Lowest exam grade is dropped. Easy A.
Professor McGinn's lectures are engaging and he always adds personal stories to make them more fun and relatable. Reading is unnecessary since all of the information is covered in the lecture slides. There are three exams and lowest grade is dropped. Easy A.
I would recommend taking SOC 100 with Terry! He was a really great professor, and his class is easy to pass with an A. His exams are all straight from lecture material and never have any trick questions.
Professor McGinn was a wonderful professor! He's very passionate about sociology and broke it down into easily understandable concepts, and he was very clear about all the class expectations. Lecture attendance is optional, and the assignments were pretty easy. Easy A class that piqued my interest in sociology!
Discussion attendance required lectures were recorded. Terry was an amazing lecturer even asynchronously, some of the GSI were better than others but you can understand the material just from him. Some discussions didn't seem very tied to the lecture which was annoying bc we had to attend, but that didn't really impact understanding of the material
Great professor. Assignments were discussion posts, 2 papers, and 3 exams. Gives you a study guide for exams with exactly what you need to know. Papers graded by GSI's. Lectures are recorded so you don't have to go.
Very interesting class. As a minority I kind of already knew this stuff but I love to hear it be taught. Also Terry was super nice and understanding. The exams were super easy if you understand the study guide questions. You don't need to purchase the second textbook, honestly I didn't read anything but some of the first book.
Incredible and passionate professor. Presents info super clearly, and lectures are very engaging. He's a very fun and nice person and very approachable. This class made me decide to major in sociology. Would definitely take another class with Terry!
Probably one of my favorite classes and favorite professors here at UMICH. Dr. McGinn is very knowledgable and is very kind. Even though I knew/was familiar with many of the topics covered in class, I was always eager to hear his perspectives and even the experiences of my peers. Great class and not hard to get an A.
Take Sociology with Terry, easy / fun class and he is the sweetest. Brought us candy for Halloween.
I love Terry! He is super engaging with the students, and if you ask him a question he doesn't know, he'll research it personally and get back to the class about it. He finds ways to keep the class engaged even though the workload is very low and the grading is generous.
Terry is adorable and a decent lecturer, though they can be a bit of a snoozer. Luckily, attendance isn't required and this is one of the easiest classes you will ever take. Grading is super easy and there aren't really any big assignments. No cumulative exams or midterms. Terry is kind and caring, makes everything super clear.
Terry is a great lecturer with clear expectations. There were four quizzes and two assignments (a presentation and paper) that counted towards your grade in addition to attendance (though you could make up for the classes you miss). This class and the quizzes are very easy if you keep up with the lectures and review the notes.
Professor McGinn explained the topics very well, and although there were a lot of readings, as long as you paid attention in lecture you'd be fine. All of the topics from the readings you needed to know he covers. Also, he gives you a guide before exams of what the key points you need to know are, and they're very helpful.
He was super kind and respectful of students
Always came to lecture with a pretty good attitude and talked about sensitive subjects in a well thought out matter, giving room for differences in opinion. No one ever got offended. Exams weren't that hard, but assignments are graded on quality, so don't slack in the class. Otherwise, it's a pretty easy A.
Terry is such a sweet guy and his classes are extremely manageable! He also loves to interact with students and get everyone engaged with the content. In terms of grading, both SOC 100 and 285 are structured around short non-cumulative quizzes, which he provides a study guide for with everything you need to know. Super chill, would recommend.
The class is super easy and he is a really nice guy. You are not tested/asked to apply concepts as much as you are asked to memorize facts and people so if you like that or want an easy A take this class.
Great professor. Really knows his stuff. Encourages conversation and wrestling with material. Grade based on few assignments, but assignments are pretty easy. Lots of reading, but the reading isn't super necessary for understanding material. Just pay attention to lecture and study guides.
Would recommend SOC 100 with Terry! I enjoyed his lectures and appreciated his study guides. Everything you need to know for the three quizzes is on those study guides, so be sure to review them thoroughly.
Great professor, great lecturer, very engaging and down to earth. Take any of his courses if given the chance.
Terry is a great professor who you can tell is passionate about sociology. He is funny and engaging, however attendance in lecture isn't needed. The class is graded on 3 tests, discussion and thats like it. I felt this class was more work than I was told, but it is by no means hard.
Easiest soc 100 professor at Michigan, you don't need to attend lectures and there are no essays or assignments. Terry is also funny and keeps lectures simple and engaging.
I love this guy. He's so nice! Basically, as long as you do your study guide and study it the night before the exam, you are guaranteed an A. Very straightforward tests, and he is a wonderful lecturer! Take him if you get the chance!
McGinn is my favorite professor, he grades easy and seems like a cheerful old man. I like his enthusiam and how he makes the class nice and easy so we can learn but also enjoy and focus on other classes stress-wise.
Terry was an enthusiastic professor that made boring material interesting and fun to learn. His slides were a bit wordy, but he gave a list of key concepts at the end of each lecture, which told you exactly everything you needed to know for exams. He is the best professor to take for this class!
Professor McGinn makes the material engaging and fun. His study guides are super helpful - combine them with unstuck AI for easy exam prep. Attendance is mandatory but the workload is reasonable, and he's a cheerful, approachable instructor.
Lectures cover all test material. No surprise questions on tests.
It was a very easy class. Terry is the sweetest old man and cares about what he's teaching. The tests were very straightforward and easy. You don't even need to show up to lectures to do well. 3 exams and 1 easy group project in discussion. I would 100% take a class from him again.
Terry is a great professor and lecturer. His slides and lectures are clear, and he divides grades into 3 exams and one group project. The exams are very reasonable (and in my experience, pretty easy). All the readings that are relevant to the test he teaches in lecture, so really no need to read them. He's also really funny!!
Terry is a very enjoyable professor who I would recommend taking. While lectures can often be very simple, he manages to make it entertaining and interactive with appropriate and engaging contemporary examples. Exams are easy. There is reading homework but honestly you can skip the readings and just listen to the lecture and be fine.
The course content is fine, and the professor is super supportive, but the grading system for group presentations (25% of grade)is a big issue. In our section, Erika Arias graded harshly—our scores ranged from 20.5 to 24.5, while other sections the lowest score is 24. The whole process felt more like busywork than a learning experience.
Terry is a charismatic, genuine professor who makes surface-level content enjoyable! It's an easy class but not mini-course easy. Exams are short, mixing content and application, so you'll still need to study. Your worst exam (out of 3) is devalued from 20 to 10 points. You don't need to do the readings or attend lectures if you watch them online.
Terry is a kind and supportive professor, but the course content felt a bit scattered at times. Nonetheless, study guides and review sessions made exam expectations clear. The group project could use a bit more oversight however, as each GSI seemed to have her own grading criteria. Overall, SOC/DIGITAL 285 is an easy and fairly interesting course.
This was the easiest class I've taken at U-M just make sure to check canvas every blue moon so you don't miss any assignments. As long as you review study guide before the exams you'll do fine.
Great professor and amazing guy and always available at office hours to review exam material. There are 3 exams, 1 group project (in your discussion), 2 small assignments, and discussion attendance and that makes up your grade. Just an overall great college professor and I'd take any of his classes.
Terry is a great lecturer and clearly very knowledgeable about the subject. Attendance is not mandatory and you can easily get an A without going to class (watch lecture vids). The class is only graded on exams (50%), two small assignments (5%), and discussion attendance participation/attendance (20%), and a group project done in discussion (25%).
I love Terry! He is a great professor and he cares about his students. I went to office hours to go over a quiz and he was really nice and willing to help. The class is 4 exams and he doubles the highest score and drops the lowest. I would definitely recommend taking a class with him.
Prof McGinn is the sweetest man and you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. Exams were an exact replica of the study guide and because of this, no one would go to class. However, I think McGinn deserves an audience and you should go to class because it is actually interesting.
He gives great lectures, engages with his students, and keeps things interesting. The exams are as straightforward as possible, and he tells you exactly what you need to know and review. No surprises or trick questions anywhere.
I normally dislike any kind of humanities class because i'm not very good with memorizing, but this class was life changing. He was so funny, so kind, and made his lectures engaging for all of us. when it was test time, he didn't spring anything surprising, you just had to make sure you studied. my advice is to make flashcards with the key notes!
Good lecturer and funny guy. You can tell that he has gone through a lot of personal work to breakdown bias that he's been taught, allowing him to teach sociology well. He's very good at teaching the content unbiasedly, despite heavily disputed topics. His tests are very straightforward and overall it's a pretty easy class.
I love Professor McGinn! If you can take SOC100 with him please do! Genuinely learned so much and he doesn't just read off slides. Everyone always felt so comfortable to speak up and have discussions about topics. Open about his political opinions but was unbiased when actually teaching.
Terry is a great lecturer! He uses stories and real-life examples to clarify ideas and keep students engaged. He's always open to conversation and willing to help, and his classes are both productive and easy to follow.
Best professor I've ever had. I came in undecided, and this course made me declare my major as sociology. He is an incredible professor and a genuinely interesting person. Attendance is not required, and most of my friends got decent grades (a/b) without doing most of the readings. He is genuinely interested in the content he teaches.
I did not speak much in this class but wow I loved Terry. He is such a sweet guy and we only had 4 quizzes, 2 papers, and 1 group project that you can also do alone. No final as well. Great guy.
super easy class. attendance not required so never went to class, watched all the lectures a few days before and always got an 100 on the exams.
Dr.McGinn genuinely cares about his students. He constantly asked my peers and me how we were doing, etc. He gave interesting lectures and is very passionate about the topics. He provided straightforward guidelines and told us what would be on the exams. He gave clear study guides. I would definitely recommend him for Soc 100.
amazing professor who lectures in an engaging way, provides many resources to succeed, and tests fairly. he made me really interested in sociology even though I thought I had no interest before I took the class.
So sweet and attendance is optional! Just mandatory discussion once a week but its literally so easy and an hour long. Exams are very straightforward, study the slides and you'll be fine!!!
Decent class, somewhat boring lectures, and attendance is not mandatory. Reviewing the material is quite easy from the slides, and the exams are pretty easy.
Professor McGinn is a great professor. The writing assignments are manageable, and the exams align with the study guides he provides. Attendance is not necessary, as the information you need is in the slides; however, his lectures are enjoyable, so you should definitely go!
Terry is so nice and a great lecturer. This class is super light also. Strongly recommend!
Loved this class. Very interesting topics. Optional readings and lectures. Only a few graded assignments and 4 short quizzes. I would recommend you go to the lectures because Professor McGinn is so entertaining to listen to and he's very knowledgeable.
