She is a great teacher; very organized and very helpful. You might feel she is a strict teacher, but she is a nice person. If you want to learn Chemistry, I highly recommend to take her class.
Ok, Chemistry is hard, that is nothing new. Professor Bear goes above and beyond what is required of a teacher to help you as the student. This professor has the knowledge base and the desire to help you, all you have to do is ask. DO THE HOMEWORK, she doesn't require it, but if you really want to pass the weekly quizes or exams you need to do it.
She is HUGE on concepts. She is very generous with partial credit. She tends to lecture a bit fast. Weekly quizzes, somewhat difficult. Tests are fair. Do the homework repeatedly. She worked for Bayer, so she has real world exp. with the stuff. Her lab write ups are a PITA to say the least. Great, great teacher; not easy though.
She is not that difficult, you just have to do the work. pay attention and ask questions, she will help you. You will learn a lot.
She is an amazing teacher. She teaches the material in a way that you remember it later, builds upon concepts really well. She has weekly quizes, but less tests than other teachers; great way to make sure you are learning the material. Quizes are easy if you pay attention and review for then for 10-20 minutes before lecture. I recommend her :).
Mrs. Bear is an amazing teacher! I really enjoyed her clear, organized, high-energy lectures. The unique way she taught made chemistry fun, and easier than I expected! Don't get me wrong; it was still tough, but she is willing to help every step of the way. I used to dread chemistry; Now it's my major! Mrs. Bear is truly inspiring. Take her!
Mrs. Bear is amazing! She isn't too hard, but you have to put some work into it. She explains everything incredibly well, so it makes everything so understandable. I would take her again, she cares so much for her students.
Such an AMAZING Teacher! Loved her and her class so much, she made the material easy to comprehend. Shes very organized SUPER helpful and sweet! She made chemistry easy for me and really prepares you for other chem classes in the future. I highly recommend her! Loved her class soo much :)
Here's a bit of truth: Don't take this class with her. The textbook was purchased, money wasted, and NEVER opened. Be ready to spend all waking hours in tutoring, despite the other comments, she is NOT helpful! She refers to this course as "elementary, mickey-mouse chemistry". She is a great person, but a HORRIBLE teacher.
Great instructor that is dedicated to her students. Very helpful and always available to help. Perhaps if the previous student opened the book, he/she wouldn't need to spend every waking hour in tutoring?????????? Take her if you really want to learn chemistry.
Mrs. Bear is brilliant. She is an amazing teacher. I cant understand why some people make negative remarks about her. She helped me add the class via the priority list and was an outstanding teacher. If you actually want to learn chemistry, then take her. She is 1 of my favorite teachers at SC. Work load is a little tough but she is very helpful!!

Don't miss lecture or lab and come to office hours. She is clear on how she wants things and gives partial credit. She doesn't collect homework so you don't technically need the book but the questions in the book are great practice for her exams and weekly quizzes. Don't be afraid to ask questions, she wants to help you. Came into the class thinking it would be my end but left the class with a love for chemistry! I definitely feel prepared for 1A.
Professor Bear is the onyl reason that I actually love chem now. She makes you work for your grade but by the end of the semester you look back and realize how much you have actually learned. She will help you with any questions, the tests are extremely clear and she sets up tutoring for you. There are quizzes every week so you cant miss any clsses
Professor Bear is the greatest! I wish she taught 1A. She's very helpful and puts in the effort 100% of the time. She wants you to succeed and will make it happen. Take her! She's too legit to quit!
There is a reason why she is this year's part-time professor of the year! Prof. Bear is incredibly dedicated to her work, wants her students to succeed, and will do everything she can to help them out. Attend office hours before class if you're struggling. Quizzes are every Tuesday. Labs are interesting and are done independently - no group work!
attendance is mandatory so i dont recommend for anyone who doesnt plan on attending every class. she kinda talks to students like they are in kindergarten. overall wasnt very impressed but still she is very helpful and wants everyone to do well.
As a first time chem student I was unsure of what to expect but Prof. Bear is one of the best instructors on campus hands down. She is passionate about chem and it shows in her teaching methods. In order to succeed in her class you must be on time and dedicated to the learning the material. Exams are not difficult if you put in time to complete HW.
Professor Bear is one of the best instructors I have ever had. Genuinely cares about all of her students. If you put forth the effort, she will make sure you pass. That beings said, she expects A LOT from her students. Her exams are rather challenging and there are weekly assessments. Attendance is NOT optional.
Bear is an amazing chemistry teacher! You can tell how passionate she is about the subject and she really made it interesting. She REALLY pushes to make sure you understand and cares for your success. She also really prepares you for 1A. Weekly quizzes and optional homework out of book (though highly recommended). Overall awesome teacher!!
Bear really loves what she teaches and dedicates it all to her students. I found this class to be very challenging! Her weekly quizzes are very tough and some of her test questions can be as well. Although this class wasn't the easiest for me, I learned so much and I'm thankful at the end for how much dedication it tookPrepare to work HARD w/ bear
Great professor! My favorite at Saddleback. Very clear, very organized, helpful during class and office hours. I wish she was teaching OChem. Attend every class, put forth the effort, do the homework and study a lot and you can get an A. More importantly, you will learn the material. Had an amazing two semesters with professor Bear, highly recommend!
Very clear and concise. I highly recommend this class with professor Bear! She may seem strict but she is very passionate and respectful to chemistry and expects the same in her students. If u actually need to learn this course, u must take with Bear. An amazing teacher and dedicated to her students, she truly wants u to succeed if u put forth the effort. Professor Bear for Ochem!!
Amazing
BEST PROF IN THE WORLD! she is straightforward.what you see is what you get.LECTURES WERE AMAZING!no way you can't understand chem.she brings out the best in her students. forces u to learn in a great way! she prepares you! she's hard but STUDY! READ,DO HW, PREPARE FOR QUIZES!= A.do not miss class. i went to the ER & it wasnt excused. TAKE HER NOW!
Dr. Bear is an incredible professor. She works hard with you if you will work hard with her. She is dedicated to her job and is sincere and honest. She will not put anything on the test that she has not lectured on. Make sure you invest a LOT of time on homework and go to all office hours. It is like an extra class period.
DR. BEAR IS ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS I HAVE EVER HAD. SHE IS NICE & CLEAR ABOUT WHAT SHE WANTS. SHE LOVES CHEMISTRY & IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THE SUBJECT. SHE IS HELPFUL & EASY TO APPROACH WITH QUESTIONS. SHE TRULY LOVES HER STUDENTS & LOVES TO TEACH. THIS IS A DIFFICULT CLASS & SHE EXPECTS A LOT FROM HER STUDENTS SO PLAN ON WORKING HARD!
There is a reason Dr. Bear was awarded Teacher of the Year not too long ago. She is arguably the best professor I have ever had at Saddleback. Her devotion and passion for teaching is made very clear in her courses. As far as the classes are concerned, you must make an effort to do well: Do the homework, study for the tests, and be involved.
Dr. Bear is the best professor I have had thus far. She is very clear and is an expert on the subject. She really tries to help all of her students. She prepares her students extremely well for Chem 12A.
Dr. Bear is awesome! She has high expectations, which is a very good thing b/c she encourages students to perform their best. You will learn a lot; she makes 12A clear, understandable & often fun! She is extremely caring, compassionate & has good sense of humor as well. Yes 12A is hard but she prepares you very well. Wish she taught more Ochem
I love Dr.Bear! I highly recommend her for any chemistry course but especially for OCHEM! She is crystal clear in her explanations and goes over everything until you understand. Her teaching style is very exciting and engaging, making it easy and fun to learn. It was the most enjoyable class I have ever taken! She loves to help in and out of class.

The best Teacher period! Dr. Bear is not only the best Chemistry teacher, but the best overall teacher I have taken thus far. She demands a lot but will meet any student more then half way if you put in the work. She makes sure all understand the material before moving to the next topic. 12A with her was a great experience. Highly recommended!
Dr. Bear is an AMAZING teacher!! She is an organic chemist and thus very skilled and experienced in the field of chemistry!! She will give you all the tools that you need in able to succeed and will meet you halfway IF you put in the time and effort! If you want to learn I STRONGLY recommend taking her!!!!
I LOVE DR. BEAR!!!! She is an AMAZING teacher. I was a bio major and after taking her I am so in love with chemistry that I ended up changing my major!! If you want to learn and you want to be prepared for the UC's I highly recommend taking her as not only she is caring but her teaching style will prepare you for upper division classes!! LOVE HER!!
Weekly quizzes. Doesn't curve tests. I had to try hard for my B. Thinks you should spend all your free time studying for her class. Unless you are a chem major, choose someone else.
I do really respect Dr. Bear. She is not a tough grader but not very easy going as well. She always follows the text book. The labs are important to her which can cause students to lose grades. Exams are not hard at all but you need to be well prepared in order to get a good grade. I definitely recommend her.
Dr. Bear is an aweosme prof and a highly intelligent woman who will demand your respect. Do not mess around, do not expect leeway. Go to class, do all the homework and study hard. This class is preferable 100% to the other options available at Saddleback or IVC, so don't run to someone "easier."
Dr. Bear is an excellent teacher. She explains things in the best way possible using examples to make sure you can perform under every scenario. She also takes time to grade quizzes & exams offering useful feedback to make sure you understand if mistakes were made. If you show her a desire to succeed, she will meet you more than halfway.
Dr. Bear is phenomenal. She is VERY clear at explaining material and fair with exams/quizzes. I have never met another professor who was able to clarify such tough concepts so well. She genuinely cares about your success and will push you to your limits. This class isn't for lazy people; she trains you to be a scientist. The fight is worth it.
Dr. Bear is straight up and will care if you care. She's a good person and is very understanding but do not try to take that to your advantage. You won't win. Do as much as you possibly can..(homework, review quizzes, read maybe, etc.) and it will pay off.
I never feel very driven to write about a professor. At first Professor Bear may seem intimidating but let me be clear that she really cares about her students. She doesn't tolerate laziness or excuses, and you don't need to be the smartest student but you better be the hardest worker. I can definitely say she is one of the most inspiring teachers.
Chem 1A is a challenging course. Unless you enter the class with a thurough understanding of chemistry, you will need to work very hard in order to do well. Bear can be intense but you will come to see how well she explains the concepts. I think the key to suceeding in this class is humility and resilience. With this mindset you will learn a lot.
She's a very particular and detail oriented woman: her way or the highway. That being said, she provides a very clear overview of the class and you'll know exactly what she expects from you (which honestly isn't unreasonable). Lectures are very clear, which is exactly what you need for ochem. Takes time to make sure you understand the material.
Bear is a really good lecturer but will not stop for anyone. She assumes everyone gets it. She grades very hard on everything especially labs. Her tests are fair but can be tricky at times. Expectations are too high at times. She can be a little snippy at times but overall has a good mood. Lectures can be a little boring at times. Overall good prof
Dr. Bear is an amazing professor who cares about her students THAT TRY IN CLASS. Ochem is a very difficult course and Dr. Bear does an amazing job of teaching the material. She is very very hard on labs and her tests can be tricky but are fair. Bottomline, her class is hard but getting an A is more than POSSIBLE if you put in a lot of work.
SO thankful that I took Bear for Ochem! She makes Ochem so easy to understand and genuinely enjoys teaching. Provides an amazing Ochem foundation to succeed at a UC. Her quizzes and exams cover a lot of material but they are definitely fair. She is a tough grader, especially on labs which are worth 25% of your grade, but overall AMAZING TEACHER!!!
OChem is a challenging course but Dr. bear breaks it down to the point where it is understandable for you, giving you a strong OChem foundation . She is passionate and caring. She clearly explained every concept and lab materials, ask her if you have confusion. Take good notes, do HW, ask questions and study for the test, you'll pass the class w/ A.
Professor Bear is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is very knowledgable about chemistry and great at lecturing. Her class is difficult, but she does a lot to prepare her students. Also, her quizzes mirror what the tests look like. Bear also took time to look at chemistry major requirements with me and inspired me to be a chem major.
Dr Bear is hands down the best professor I've ever had. I have taken my entire chemistry sequence with her. Ochem is a difficult class but with her help understanding the material is much easier! The labs are a good portion of your grade and there is a quiz almost every week (great study tool). Be ready to give a lot of effort and dedication
Professor Bear by far the best professor I have had yet, she is amazing and nice once you get to her good side. Her exams are fair, be sure to do the text book problems to prepare for exams. If you put in the time you will get an A trust me. Tough grader on labs but very fair on exams.
Having taken Dr. Bear's class from Chem 1B to Chem 12B, I have the pleasure of saying she is the best instructor I have had in my college career. Her class is tough, but her ability to teach as well as the care and time she puts in for her students makes the subject very do-able. Exams and quizzes are properly represented by what she teaches us.
Amazing professor! Hands down one of the best, if not the best professor at saddleback! Very hard but fair grader on labs. Tests are more than doable, she alway takes a mechanism or synthesis problem from the book so make sure to read and do the homework. If you piss her off lets just say you are going to have a rough semester. Do no be a smart a$$
Dr. Bear is easily the most insightful professor I've ever had. She genuinely cares about her students well being. All I can say is work your butt off and it will be forever rewarding. Dr. Bear is a tough grader but let me tell you one thing if you show her hard work and dedication she'll be in your corner, she's a good person to have there.
She is hands down the best chemistry professor I've ever had. She loves her students, and cares that they learn and appreciate the content (that's why the class is rigorous). Organic Chemistry is known to be a hard subject, but she made it very doable and enjoyable for me. Highly recommend taking her!
Dr. Bear is an amazing professor that really wants her students to learn. Organic chemistry is hard regardless, so don't let the level of difficulty scare you away. She is very patient, and her lectures are very clear. Class is very fair because you know what to expect on every exam and quiz.
This is one of the hardest classes i have ever taken, however Dr. Bear is an amazing teacher and is very clear in her expectations of you. She wants to see you succeed and is always willing to help in office hours. You will easily spend 10+ hours for this class every week. Tests are similar to quizzes and there are no surprises.
Dr. Bear is definitely on of the best professors I've ever taken. She cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. Her lectures were amazing and definitely got me ready and on track for chem 12B. you definitely need to put time and effort into into this class, and once you do you'll start to see the amazing outcomes that it has.
Strongly recommended! Dr. Bear is fair, kind, and REALLY CARES. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT because she challenges you in every possible way. There are weekly quizzes and each week you'll work on one experiment INDIVIDUALLY. The pre-labs might be overwhelming at first but after a while you'll become faster. The lowest quiz and lab will be dropped.
Prof Bear made me fall in love with ochem. She has a very clear expectation from her students and she makes you work for that grade. Her labs are not easy but after doing a few, you can find figure out the best way that works for you. She is amazing in lectures and is always available in office hours . Shes very caring, definitly recommend.
Great professor. Just listen to whatever she says and don't try be a smart ass to her and you will do fine because in the end you'll see why she says and does the things that she does. Best professor I've ever had although it was one of the tougher classes. You will have to work hard in this class, if youre not committed, dont bother.
Just don't take organic with her. She is very picky on labs and she didn't turn back our last lab and exam. Also, she doesn't use Canvas for grades, so you will never find out what you get until the last minute of official grades
Dr. Bear is awesome! She helps you understand OChem and takes her time during lecture until everyone understands. The workload is a lot but it really helps prepare for the MCAT.
Dr. Bear's class takes some time getting use to, but once you get in the hang of it you won't want to learn OChem any other way. She provides a ton of lab instruction and practice quizzes. My one bit if advice would be to really try and do well on labs and quizzes (especially quizzes) as they are a huge part of your grade.
Great prof! If you get on her good side. Dont be smart with her and take her corrections to heart. Labs and quizzes are a huge part of your grade, so give a damn about them. Super picky on everything, so details matter. This class is a LOT of work, so be prepared. Exams are similar to quizzes, which are similar to practice quizzes. No surprises.
This class is a lot of work. Take the time to comprehend the material. It's not the content but the amount of time you need to learn that makes it difficult. Record the lectures. She's strict but it's necessary. DO NOT BE LATE! Unless you want to deal with the wrath.. Labs become easy over time, start early to save yourself sleepless nights.
Lectures are basically her sitting on an imaginary podium and screaming facts into you to memorize for the exam and labs. Really tough grader, gives bad grades to even quizzes and labs finished with time and effort JUST because you didn't say the EXACT words she had in mind. Makes you feel worthless and incapable of anything because of this.
the people who don't like Bear are people who can't keep up with hard work, her class makes you face the reality of how difficult advanced courses are. She is an amazing professor & I feel lucky shes at SDBK & not at a university. The labs are the only issue they take 4-5 hours to prep but really help when doing the experiment. Highly recommend.
Get ready to UNDRESTAND organic chemistry, don't take this class with other high unit classes because you will spend so much time on Labs and also quizzes every week. Lecture is heavy but everything will be covered. You wont see a question that you havent seen before in exam so that is nice, however you need to study a lot.
She always tries to act like she's there to help but she is honestly so unapproachable. Personally, I was always to scared to ask for help because of this. I ended up dropping the class, retook it with another professor the semester after.
I am so glad I have Dr Bear during the Covid 19 crisis with face to face teaching changed to online. she has kept everything the as much as possible. she meets with us every day on zoom like we would in class and has videotaped the experiments and goes through them with us step by step. Not many Ochem teachers could pull this off so well
She is how she calls its "fairly stern". I had her for 12A and currently have her for 12B during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since this will be the case for a lot of you next semester, the class goes through the whole time as you would in person. Weekly quizzes, tests, and labs that she performs and you write a report on. She truly cares about students.
I liked this class but I got extreme anxiety EVERY class period! Lab and lecture were always an extreme task that didnt need to be! Also if your prelab isnt right youll get kicked out. I never did, but stayed up all night worrying that my pre labs were okay! So be prepared to lose your sleep and mind!
One word AMAZING. I was so worried about the MCAT organic chemistry portion and I cannot believe how well I did because of Dr. Bear. She is VERY clear on her expectations and there are never any surprises. Yes it is a lot of work but well worth it in the end. Take her for organic if you get the chance.
I had Bear a year ago. She simplified concepts, but it seemed to be too much. I transferred & now my chem friends know so so much more about orgo chem. I'm struggling with reviewing basics in our upper orgo chem class :( She wasn't good, as was often not approachable by students & never held traditional 1 on 1 office hours. Save the future stress
Professor Bear was one of the best professors I have ever had. She has taken so much of her personal time to make sure we understand concepts and not just memorize them. When we seem confused, she stops and looks for a different way to explain the concept. She also makes TONS of practice quizzes so you know exactly what to expect on exams. Take her
I wish I could have taken Dr Bear for both 12A and 12B. It was disappointing that she was not teaching 12B off sequence last fall. She makes ochem so understandable and cares that you actually learn. The labs are challenging at first but prepared me to get an undergraduate research position in an organic lab at UCI. Try to take her for both courses
I enjoyed the concepts, but the teacher was difficult sometimes. Lecture will happen before lab, with office hours in between, so its low key hard to ask questions one on one. Also, the textbook and lab textbook will be needed, which can be costly. Lecture was fun until material picked up pace. Just stay on top of work and youre totally chillin
I had Bear 3 years ago her for all my chem classes at Saddleback. Yes she seems harsh at first but that is what is needed to get students ya to take these courses seriously. I have graduated from a UC and have been accepted to 4 medical schools which she wrote letters for I know I would not be as prepared if it were not for her teaching style
dr. bear has a very unconventional style of teaching. she teaches her students like her kids, a little unprofessional and unsettling. assignments are lengthy & straight memorization. i didnt end up learning much and regret i didnt take it elsewhere with a more understanding professor. save your heart the stress and dont take her.
Hardest classes I have ever taken but worth the effort. She is a challenging instructor but you will learn a TON. She uses the book but creates slides that are organized. Exams mirror quizzes so no surprises. She wont let you fall behind. If you take 12A with another instructor it will be an extra challenge to move into 12B with her class
OChem is a tough subject, but prof makes it harder than it needs to be. I put so much time and effort into every assignment, but was dinged off for pointless marks. Im a good student, but please do yourself a favor and do not take her class. She terrorizes students & makes the learning environment difficult. Take this as a warning & go elsewhere..
People will rant about how she's picky, but that's the reality of upper division STEM courses so get used to it if you're a STEM major She has times when she gets irritated but really cares about students who actually try. Quizzes every week and exams are extremely fair (and cumulative) and lab take hours to do, overall a lovely person and fav prof
Professor Bear is extremely particular in how she runs her class and what she expects from students, but that being said she is the most passionate professor I have ever had. She truly cares about students and their success. She is not easy by any means but is extremely fair and will help any student that cares. Highly recommend
Easily the hardest working professor at Saddleback, clear of expectations/grading (although remember, she's looking for what she wants), brings opportunities outside of class and will make O-chem feel intuitive. Labs are lots of work and are high stress/high reward. She will hound out students who make mistakes in the lab. Don't be the example.
As said by pretty much every rating, she's VERY picky on labs. However, by the end of the semester, you honestly feel so prepared for any sort of report/analysis/etc. I took her during the COVID crisis, and she kept asking us if we got into our classes, how we were feeling and generally made sure we were okay. She is strict but soo sweet!
She is one of the best chemistry professors I have had! She is super caring but she is also super particular in what she is looking for. She has super clear guidelines and her grading is pretty straight forward where she rewards you for what you know. She only wants the best for her students and is behind them for any support that they need.
Dr. Bear is a great teacher. I have definitely learned a lot from her and I wouldn't have it any other way. However, while she is a good teacher, just know that her class is tough. Real tough. So if you are someone who can handle a tough class, then by all means, she is a great teacher. But if tough isn't for you, maybe think twice.
AMAZING chem teacher!! so thorough in explanation and has a billion little tips to help understand and remember information. She is very specific on how problems are worked through and picky on showing your work but in the end it really helps you to never forget anything and get a good score! very straightforward and super helpful professor:)
The material itself is challenging, but her knowledge and ability to teach heavily compensates for the rigor of the class. She does the absolute best job of explaining to you and preparing you for all assignments/labs/tests. She is very strict about procedures/work. However, she is EXTREMELY fair and easily one of my favorite teachers of all time.
Jeez, I learned a lot in this class but it consumed my life. While I learned way more than Alston ochem, I genuinely felt terrified of her. I've seen her make multiple people cry in class (she can be mean & has favorites), not the best environment for me to learn in. Get a good study group! hold each other accountable! And you will make it through
Had her for 12A and B during the pandemic. She was so organized and kept us on track carrying out the experiments live for us. In 12B she made sure we got to be in lab for 8 weeks doing experiments. She was very available for questions via email 7 days a week and even made sure we still had tutoring through the LRC. Can't go wrong with her
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. The course covers a lot of material so it is important that you keep up. Her exams are fair and consistent with what is shown during lecture. She is also very structured and specific when it comes to pre-labs and lab reports. She might be strict, but she truly cares that you do well.
Professor Bear is good at teaching but she is a very tough grader. Lab reports are extremely long and she reads every word of it. Dont miss lecture or lab and do everything her way. Do well on the quizzes because they can bring your grade down. Chem12A isnt an easy class so go to the class tutor for help. The work load was so stressful.
Dr Bear is the most caring professor I have ever had. She is not easy but is very fair. Students that dont do well are not willing to do the works. She devotes so much time to students and returns quizzes the same day! She wants everyone to do well and will help anyone who really cares and is willing to work. She made Ochem much less daunting
Shes one of the best teachers Ive ever had. You can tell shes very passionate about what she does by how seriously she takes your learning. She can seem very intimidating, but once you get past that shes very nice and helpful. Shes very clear on what she expects of you, and in order to do well, you have to devote a lot of time to this class.
On the off chance that she ever reads this, Dr. Bear, the only thing I'd like you to take away from this is, 90% of your students are not chem majors. We do not want to be here. We don't think ochem is "mindblowing". Cut us some slack, understand that we have other classes that we actually care and like and NEED, unlike this weeder class.
I took 12A with another instructor and although it took some time to adjust the class was very rewarding. Professor Bear is very organized and specific about her policies. Lectures were very clear and she provides extensive laboratory direction. Highly recommend
After receiving a perfect score on the ochem section of the MCAT one word: AMAZING. If you really want to learn the stuff take her. For the complainers: grow up this isn't high school. You may want to think about vocational school and drop the course to make room for others who really care about preparing for a career in the sciences.
You will learn a lot from here but sometimes she is very harsh. Labs are very extensive. Not an easy A, or an easy B but if you put in the time- which you should for any organic chemistry class you wil succedd
loves her work
Professor Bear is not for the faint of heart. She can come off as uncaring and rude in her syllabus and emails, but she's actually very helpful and understanding. She expects a lot form her students and makes them memorize practically everything, but she's setting you up for the other Chem classes at Saddleback and she gets good results. Study!
Unapproachable and very rude and calls people disrespectful for standing up for themselves.
She may seem strict at first but once you get to know her you will see she REALLY cares about students. I was contimplating dropping because I didn't want to get a C but she encouraged me to stay in the class and keep pushing me and I got a B. I didn't need 12B for transfer but it I did I wouldnt tak any other prof.
Ochem is TOUGH. Everyone knows that. Bear knows her stuff and knows how to teach it. If you want to get by and not really learn take it at a different school. Saddleback is serious about ochem. Practice quizzes saved me. She gives tons of them and they resemble quiz and exam questions. Labs are tough at first but get easier.
Tough class but worth the effort. Never a slow week. Lab reports /quizzes each week and 4 exams. You must stay on top of the work to be successful but very doable. Super organized on Canvas. No group work. Professor Bear is not easy but very helpful she even provides free tutoring from a previous student.
You have to understand that this subject is difficult and it takes significantly more effort for some than others. Given this, Dr. Bear is an amazing professor that gives quick and detailed feedback and has genuinely been the best professor I've taken at community college. If you want to work hard and learn the material, this class is for you.
Dr. Bear is one of the most thoughtful and hard working professors I have ever had. It is extremely evident that everything she does is to benefit students. Yes, she has high expectations, but she prepares her students to succeed and has so many resources available. She makes learning so fun and creates such a safe and inclusive space. Take her!!!!
I attended spring 2021, online lecture with half class doing lab one day and the other half the following class day (monday/wednesday). She offered valuable feed back on all labs telling you what you need to improve on to get a better grade the next time around. Tells you whats on quizzes. Great professor overall, cares about her students very much
Dr. Bear is the best chemistry professor one could have. She knows chemistry very well, yet she is also just an amazing teacher in general (she got her phd in teaching). If you can, 100% take her course. The class is hard, yes, because it is organic chemistry, but with her teaching style, if you work hard you will do well no matter what.
Taking Dr. Bear for chem 12A was the best decision I made. She is very organized and provides so many examples. She provides us with practice quizzes and quizzes and exams are reflected on her practice quizzes, there are no surprises at all. There is a lot of material in this class so being organized and managing your time is key so succeeding.
Dr. Bear is the absolute best! Her class is engaging and interesting. She has a way of teaching Organic Chemistry that makes the subject very enjoyable. I will always remember Dr. Bear as one of my all time favorite teachers.
Without a doubt, the best ochem professor in SoCal, perhaps even California. I had her for 12A and 12B. 12A wasn't too bad, but 12B is intense. She has weekly quizzes and expects high quality labs, but this all makes you a better student and chemist. I believe the best way to get an A in ochem is to take it with Bear. ALSO GO TO TUTORING SESSIONS.
She is a very good lecturer and educator overall.
Amazing chemistry professor. Take her for both 12A and 12B and make detailed notes. Everything is cumulative from 12A to 12B and if you study well, you can accomplish great things in this class. Unless youre a swarthoid lmao.
Everything about Dr. Bear's class is great! She gives you all the resources you need to understand the subject + get an A. The class required a lot of studying, but Dr. Bear's method of teaching made the content easy to learn. The tutoring is super helpful!
Dr. Bear is very organized and releases grades super fast with great feedback on the lab reports. It was my first time taking her class and at first I was intimidated by her but she actually cares enough to make sure her students learn. She also gives good extra credit!! Overall great class and professor, I recommend taking her class.
Dr. Bear is great. If you show her you care, she will care and help you. She's strict and likes things done a certain way but she makes it very clear what she wants done at the beginning of every class. She gives you everything you need: practice quizzes, recorded lectures. Go to LRC tutoring (she hand-picks her tutors so they will be a HUGE help).
Professor Bear is intimidating at first but is a nice person when you talk to her. A realistic expectation is that the pre-labs take hours to complete, tests are challenging, and studying for the weekly quizzes will be important for your success in the course. She is very particular and specific about how she grades so pay attention. Good luck g
Took this class in summer, she is a really good professor! If you don't know any basics of chemistry and algebra, you will have a hard time especially if you're taking it in a summer. She can be harsh on grading labs and exams because she wants it to be done based on what she taught you on lectures. Getting an A is doable!
Best chemistry professor I have ever had by far. Lectures are in-depth and practice quizes/exams are almost exactly what the actual test will be. Grades tough but fair, and LRC tutors (which she hand picks) are extremely helpful. Overall, chemistry is a difficult subject, but Dr. Bear gives you the best shot to get a great grade.
6-8 hours on lab reports a week (wont get full credit) with quizzes every week. the exams are decent, just no time to study; you're exhausted. "its a full time job." there is no slacking off. don't take this prof, most responses are lies. no support. she enjoys the pressure she puts on her students. take this course at scc!!
Best professor I have had at SB! Lab reports take quite a bit of time at first then get easier with your template. NO online homework/additional homework problems/busywork. Gives recordings of the lectures, practices quizzes with keys, and tutors. Gets frustrated with students that don't care. If you do show up and do the work an A is doable.
Dr. Bear is an extremely caring professor and really wants everyone to succeed! The class is very difficult, but dedicating time and effort, plus having a positive mindset goes a long way! There are weekly quizzes and lab reports. Going to the LRC is super helpful as well. I promise you WILL understand Organic Chemistry after taking this course:)
DO NOT take this class if you want to go to grad school (Med,dental,PA, etc). She teaches the class as if you are all students wanting to get a PhD in chemistry. Only take it if you truly love chemistry. During the first half of the semester lab reports take around 25 hours a week to finish. Exams are fair. Quiz every monday. She tries to bescary.
She good before after being a chemistry chair lost herself, lab work alone no talk, come to class late 1 minute with no inter, labs 5 or more page of work ready for it,act like we have just her class heavy exams. If you don't be live me,go to the first day late do not let u in,I still see people first day cry and go home for beinglate good luck
She jokes about being a mom to the class and it feels like that... but not always in a great way. Can be rude/condescending at times, but can also be kind and gentle. Super hard class, labs will kick your butt (10-20 hours weekly), quizzes every week unless there's a midterm, tests are hard but you know what's coming. You will LEARN ochem, not cram
Our class averages low B's on exams, her exams are very reasonable. Put in effort and show up on time and you will do fine and will be respected. If you have trouble with this, you shouldn't register for her class, let alone the other ochem professor(s) at saddleback. Listen to her feedback on labs! Listen in class and you'll need less self study.
The points she takes off for reports are petty & no one will ever get a perfect score. She expects actual perfection and nothing less. An impossible standard to live up to. Unapproachable & will call out students in front of all for any mistake or for being late. AVOID to spare yourself a heart attack. Pretentious unhelpful & rude. The actual worst
If you're looking for an easy ochem course, dont take this class. If you're willing to put in the hard work, take this class. Bear teaches at a high level that sets you up for future courses. She sets you up for success with constant feedback and help, but don't think you can slack off. Expect to set aside +18hrs a week for studying and labs.
Low ratings are probably from slackers or soft people. Don't expect an easy A. Lecture material is thoroughly explained, but never hesitates to answer questions (have some common sense in lab though). Quiz every week, labs are intense. Tutors are handpicked by her and super helpful. She has a PhD in education and it shows. Definitely take her!!
Dr Bear does seem intimidating but she is actually very nice and very understanding. She is no nonsense and does require you to put in alot of effort but its because she cares. I tried my hardest and got a B.
Coming back 1 yr later to write a review. Ended up taking this course with a different professor & was able to pass with flying colors. If you just need credit, DO NOT TAKE BEAR, she is NOT realistic. Teaches as if everyone is majoring in chem. Makes simple concepts harder than they need to be. VERY degrading, judgemental & unapproachable.
Hands down best chem prof at Saddleback. Had Bear for chem 3 during the summer which set me up for 1A/1B. Had her for 12A/12B. Detailed and organized. Always available on Canvas even on the weekends. Great practice quizzes that mirror real quizzes. Fair exams. Free tutoring by her former students. Explains everything. Can't go wrong taking her
Has lengthy lectures but is mostly already in the slides with some notes taken along with it. Exams are tough, but with studying and competing the practice quizzes and extra practice problems, you can essentially see the exam before you take it. Grades all everything with corrections so you can learn from your mistakes. Stern but kind personality
Prof. Bear runs a tough course, but puts in the effort to set you up for success. Expect long hours for lab reports and challenging exams, but the constant feedback and support make it worthwhile. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for pre-exam practice - highly recommend giving it a try!
Exams and quizzes are extremely fair and while the labs take a while to complete there is less competing priorities among the course work to make this a problem.
I loved taking her for 12A and 12B. During 12A I was worried that I wouldn't succeed, but 12B was my favorite class ever! Don't be discouraged by the other reviews because Dr. Bear truly cares about her students if you put in the time and effort. She was such a great mentor and helped me so much throughout the year! Take her she's great!
Writing this years later. She is a phenomenal professor. Her rigor and high expectations make you a much better student and scientist. I wish my UD professors were more like her because it made me care about what I was learning and overall helped me succeed. To do well, take all of her advice/feedback and use it. It's not as hard as everyone says.
Writing this months later I understand that teachers want their students to be better students, but when the course takes up your entire life, it's really not worth it or the possible hit on your GPA. Weekly quizzes, 4 exams and final, no curve. Labs take FOREVER. If you did not take 12A with her, DO NOT TAKE 12B WITH HER, YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED!!!!
Her quizzes and exams are easy and labs are pretty awful but considering most ochem professors are awful in all three categories I'd say its still a positive. She doesn't take pride in low exam averages either and an A is very achievable.
I don't understand the bad reviews on here (probably from lazy people). Dr. Bear is more of a mentor than a chem professor. She wants you to succeed and will give you all the material and help you need to do so. If you have a decent foundation in chemistry and are motivated to get an A, it is beyond doable to get an A. Take Dr. Bear!!!!
All of the bad reviews on here are from people who do not work hard. Dr Bear is an exceptional professor who cares greatly. As long as you are passionate and put in effort you'll be successful in this class. She WANTS students to succeed. Do the practice quizzes over and over and go to LRC. This class can be hard, but she made me a better student.
