a little unclear on papers/projects, expect lots of reading and boring lectures
Makes Ethics as interesting as she can
Good overall prof.
Very hard grader, but if you make yourself known to her she'll be easier on you.
She is very helpful, no tests, and rewrites on papers, best philosphy teacher.
Great Prof, passionate about students learning, just do rewrites for an "A"
HOT, passionate about the subject

Really nice and a pretty decent prof. Gets crazy and excited about the subject.
teacher is nice, but boring, grades hard in non-sws class

Very helpful, wants you to succeed, very passionate about the subject!
Great professor, get her to know your name, and your set! be prepared to study!
quite energetic + very helpful. go to class, ask questions, get an A
ohhh baby!!! She is HOT!!
Very nice teacher. Is easy to understand. Hard marker, but lets you redo papers. She's hot for teacher!!

Very funny. Accent makes her hard to understand sometimes and handwriting is even worse, but she's easy to work with. All you have to do is pay attention in class and ask questions from time to time.
She's very nice, but there's not many possible points so everything counts. She's explains everything really whell though.
Pretty easy class, do the papers ahead of time and have her edit them before due date and you'll get an A. Attendance is the only other way to get points so SHOW UP. Very nice prof.
Kind of Helpful, terrible handwriting and still learning the english language a bit. Have to show up for grade, easy but extremely boring.
Pretty good class. I thought there would be more discussion but the people in my class didn't want to. Very nice. Pretty funny too.
Really nice prof. Fairly easy grader, if you use a lot of your notes when you write it. REALLY STRICT attendance policy!! Handwriting is really bad though.
Can get kinda boring. Grades pretty hard so do papers early and have her check it before the due date.
Okay, you MUST attend lecture, she takes attendance EVERY lecture. This class was really interesting. She grades essays hard but if you listen and take a LOT of notes you will do fine!
I do not recommend taking this class. She grades her papers hard and is not clear about what she wants in her assignments. I got A's in all of my other hard science classes, and ended up with a B- for this class. It was the most boring class I have had.
She is a really hard teacher, but a good one. Her lectures tend to be BORING!! but only because she goes on and on about some random subject. HORRIBLE HAND-WRITING
Must attend class, class is very hard and intimidating at first, but then gets much easier. For papers, make an appt. with her and you'll get a much better grade. She's a little hard, but very nice and helpful.
Very nice prof. Passionate about subject, material sort of difficult but ask questions & she'll answer it as best as she can. Counts attendance! Tells you everything you need for final and gives you a cheat sheet. Overall good prof!
awesome, knowledgeable, energetic teacher. very thorough in lecture. easy to understand material. she's a very sweet woman. TAKE HER CLASS!
Very nice lady, extremely passionate about what she teaches, tries a little too hard sometimes. It is difficult to get kids excited at 8 in the morning. She really knows her stuff, but has favorites. If you miss even 2 classes, expect to lose pts. and for her to tell people infront of the entire class.
Teacher was very understanding. If you ever needed help she was there, she had a sense of humor, and new how to make a boring class more understanding, and intersting, take this professor for this class!
Bad handwriting, talks fast, very fun and energetic, loves to teach. Very helpful if you ask for it. Talk to her before a test, she will help you understand what you need to know. Test can be hard and the lecture can get boring but go to class because she takes attendance. It is a good class but I suggest taking it as a credit/no credit class.
Thinks shes funnier than she is. Tests are easy. Strict attendance policy, but easy stuff. Tests are an essay about ONE of the philosophers you discussed in that section. So really, you only have to pay attention on one day!
Great Professor. So nice and so helpful. The exams aren't too bad - study the handouts and your good to go. A lot of things are repetitive. Lectures can be boring, but it's easy to pass with an A or B.
easy entry level course. very hyper prof. not above embaresing students, which can be quite amusing. atendance policy is unrealistic considering how very dull lectures can be. no time in lecture for student discussion because that would take away from her constant talking.
She likes to pick on students but rarely asks them questions. I didn't like how the whole class was 3 papers with an awful attendance policy. She can lecture on her subjects very well if you can listen for that long, or read her hand writting to take the notes!
She's really nice and is a great help outside of class- always takes the time to get to know students..even when that subject is hard..like Existentialism....
Very knowledgable and passionate about the subject. Cares about the students understanding what she is saying. Lectures can be boring and very confusing, she likes to skip around from subject to subject. Just do the reading and study the material and you'll do good.
She is very nice but the class is SO boring. It was easy though cuz there was no homework just a couple of easy tests. I actually got a B when I read the book and an A when I didn't. Just read her summaries...oh she hates people who skips and it will affect your grade.
She's not very good at writing on the board, which is most of the class. You basically learn about philosophers, take notes and take essay tests, presentation at the end of the semester, 3-4 tests altogether, no homework. Overall a pretty good teacher, hard time reading her handwriting, plus she has an accent. Overall good teacher.
Very nice lady, easy grading, she lets you decide what you want to write about on the exams, very eager to help outside of class, would highly recommend. the only part that is bad is her handwriting and the attendance policy. take her if you don't mind going to class!
Good teacher, slight accent but still easy to understand. Makes the subject rather interesting considering what it was.
Take it SWS! You write three papers total (including final) and attendance is not mandatory but makes up about 15% of your grade. Her handwriting is TERRIBLE but she is a good prof who is willing to help as much as possible. She has a slight accent but it is still easy to understand. She sometimes makes fun of students...but still worth taking.
Horrible teacher. You won't be able to understand anything she writes on the bored. She does not understand the concept of a grading system. Was constantly changing requirements for test's. DO NOT TAKE HER!
So she has bad hand writing. She's very helpful and loves the subject. Attendance is manditory...in college. Take her if you want a professor that cares.
She is very interested in philosophy which is an absolute plus. I love having her as a teacher beccause her passion and interest in this makes me want to learn. So far Im getting a C+halfway through the class. Not much work besides light reading. PLUS she has a sense ofhumor and lovestalking to her students
A good class, had trouble staying awake. Interesting matrial...the first time it was presented. The teaching style is boring and her hand writing isn't good. She tries to be personable, but is more awkward than anything. Over all, a good teacher.
Best professor at GVSU. My favorite thing about this class was Professor Castelao! She is so smart, and so genuine. Plus, she really cares about her students. I will really miss her.
TERRIBLE TEACHER!!!!!! do not take her! you can not read her hand writing or understand. She was gone for over half the semester and we couldnt miss one day! VERY hard grader!! DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!!! unless you want to fail.
Class is super boring, I would suggest you bring a laptop to keep you from falling asleep. TERRIBLE HANDWRITIG. Terrible grader, I think she just guesses a grade. Overall an easy class but attendence is mandatory.
Terrible teacher. I have no idea how she has an overall 4.0 rating on here. She's extremely dull and uninteresting. Her class is lecture the whole time. Mandatory attendance. Has the hand writing of a 3 year old so its very difficult to take notes. Very unclear on exams. I legitimately fell asleep in her class which I have never done before.
Easiest class ever.Very few assignments and they were like 1-2 pg papers. All exams were either take home or she gave you the questions 1-2 weeks before hand. If you want an A you'll get one.I did 1extra credit assignment(which she offers plenty of) and ended up with a 105%. Never had one percent taken off. Show up and look up the answers on google
Class was WAY to hard for an intro gen Ed. All exams are in essay form and they are not easy! The reading is hard enough let alone writing about it. She's nice as a person but far to hard for a 101 class
She's nice and the class is fun. She is from Portugal, so she has an accent, but I is easy to understand. She has VERY bad handwriting, but covers the topics thoroughly enough that you can get it all down in your notes by listening. She gives you a set of questions in advance and then there's three of them on the actual exam. She wants thoroughness
This class is really boring, I can hardly stay awake in it. She grades extremely hard on the exams which are all essays. Take a different prof if at all possible!!
Professor Lawless is the best teacher I have had since I started her at GVSU. She is very willing to engage in converstation/debate with the students, and always explains things in a clear and detailed manner. She is very funny, and is willing to help each student succeed individually depending on their strengths/weaknesses.
I hated this class but really only because of the material. She was really specific in her explanations and lectures so that I understood the authors sometimes without even doing the readings. Also on all of my exams which are essays, I got a much better grade than expected so I'd say she's an easy grader
Awesome teacher, handwriting is shaky, but if you listen to her words you can put 2+2 together and figure out what it says. Easy tests and essays if you use examples of philosophy from your life. Doesn't shy away from a philosophical debate. Lots of extra credit opportunities! Very good class and teacher.
Her handwriting is a little bit hard to understand at times, but she is always willing to go back and clarify. The class overall is fairly easy, but the reading can be difficult at times.
Her handwriting is horrible! She knows her stuff but she expects a lot from her students, she does not use BB so you dont know how you're doing til the end of semester.
HORRIBLE handwriting, which makes learning a bit difficult. She is a pro on the material she teaches, so expects you to eventually be too. Boring lectures, but the homework and tests aren't too bad. Don't take it unless you absolutely have to.
Don't take this class if you don't have her. She is a rough grader..When you pick to write about a philosopher do not pick the harder one, she will not give you more points, she will grade you the same as everyone else. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, She makes this class so boring. DIFFICULT GRADER
Biggest issue was terrible handwriting. She writes all of her notes and refuses to use Power-point. All of her tests are hand-written. It's a regular class but she treats it like an SWS course. English is a second language for her which makes it difficult to understand. Very nice woman, and if you do go to office hours, she can help.
Horrible handwriting and she knows it. Talks extremely fast. Expects you to be an expert on the philosopher you choose for you exam. All free response to questions she writes which aren't always clear. From portugal- has accent. VERY TOUGH GRADER. and then you can't read any comments she makes on your essays... horrible experience. hated it all.
Pretty good, can't read her writing though
Bad handwriting, but an awesome woman. Very helpful and loves to get the class involved. She is extremely intelligent and speaks english very well, even though it is her third language. Seriously awesome lady.
Her class is quite difficult, even when you read all of your materials. Your grade is based off of three tests, so if you do bad on them, then it's difficult to pass. She allows students to get up to 5 points of extra credit to help cushion grades. You have no homework, just reading. Her writing is illegible, but you can ask her to repeat stuff.
She has horrible handwriting but she knows it and is willing to repeat it. She's nice but makes awkward jokes and points out random people and can make you feel weird. She claims your grade is based off a variety of things but it's really only based on the 3 tests which are fine as long as you read and take good notes
Honestly this is the easiest class you will take. She doesn't give homework, all you have to do is the readings. She's a great teacher and keeps the class interesting. Almost always lets the class go early. Her tests are easy bc you basically know exactly what is going to be on the and you pick the chapter of the book that you want your test on
She is very passionate bout what she teaches, but has trouble communicating with students. The book is very hard to understand and her explanations are often contradictory. She talks fast and is sometimes hard to understand. You can not read a single thing she writes. The grading criteria on tests is confusing and you cannot read her comments.
PHI 102 with Professor Lawless was the easiest college course I have EVER taken. Those who think this class is hard, probably do poorly in all of their courses. If you cannot comprehend common sense wisdom then DO NOT take this course. Your grade is based off of three essay exams. You'll do poorly if you do not elucidate your responses thoroughly.
She always wants you to understand the material and she presents it in a very understanding way. She let students with poor test grades make corrections to their essays in order to boost their grade. I would register for one of her classes again!
Do not take her!!! Makes it clear she only gives out a few A's. Extremely tough grader, has horrible hand writing, and is very rude. If you get on her good side she will grade you easier though. If you get stuck with her, go to her office hours and if you get a bad grade on an exam, go talk to her and she will let you redo it. Avoid her though!!
One of those professors that thinks she's teaching a graduate school seminar and grades accordingly for a 100 level intro gen ed philosophy class
She is very rude, a very tough grader, and has the worst hand writing I've ever seen. You have to be VERY specific and detailed on your exams or you will not do good. She also laughs at people opinions, makes them feel stupid, and talks over everyone when they're trying to explain what they're thinking. I hated this class. I do not recommend it.
Run away as fast as you can! Her handwriting is horrendous, her tests have to be exact word for word or you will not pass the test. She expects a lot from you! I did all the homework, all the reading and prepared myself for every test and she graded the tests so harsh. Not only is her teaching hard to understand but she has a tough accent.
Professor Lawless is very passionate about her work. It's a breath of fresh air. She loves philosophy and she wants you to understand it and love it too. She has a slight accent but nothing you should be worried about. However her handwriting is bad, but just listen to her words and you'll be fine. Her lectures are mind-bendingly eye-opening.
Avoid her at all costs. Her handwriting is very poor and her notes are all over the place on the board. She grades her exams as if it is a graduate level class (spelling also matters). She belittles the class because we are all undergrads and do not have a PhD like her (she constantly talks about her education). Class is passable but not suggested.
Her lectures are very well planned out and she is clearly very intelligent and knowledgeable about philosophy. She is very passionate about what she teaches and it is super inspirational! Her lectures are very engaging and make the material interesting and if you follow her directions and keep up with the reading, the tests are not too hard!
She was clearly passionate and knowledgeable about philosophy, however, she described her grading process as such: "A C in my class is an A in every other professor's classes". I'm an all A student and I am shooting for a B-.
Very nice professor and clearly very knowledgeable-- once spent 15 minutes talking about how she learned to love Aristotle in college. Her handwriting can be hard to read, so make sure to ask her for clarification, because you're going to want to take notes. Really hates cell phones during class, so use them with caution or risk being called out.
Overall this was not a terrible class. However, her handwriting is atrocious so when you get tests back you will have no idea why you got the grade you did. She looks for very specific answers on tests and if you don't give her those answers(tests are all essays) you will lose significant points. Only grades are 2 tests and final
It's hard to know what she's looking for. You really have to work hard to get an A, since she reminds us how often she doesn't just give those out. Notes may be difficult to take since her handwriting is horrific, but if you meet with her outside of class you can clear things up. She's not horrible, but she's definitely not the best prof I've had.
Prof. Lawless is very passionate about ethics. People complain about not doing well on tests, but it is just a matter of paying attention in class. She is known to ramble, but if you just stick through it, she gives you everything you need to do well. I would take her again because she is funny and nice. Attendance is mandatory for a grade.
Homework is just reading a couple of pages, which is great. When you need clarification on notes or have a question, she will explain it in the most confusing way, and will go off topic or ramble to the point where you forget what the question even was. Her handwriting is atrocious, but she will clarify. Rarely gives As, which is disappointing.
A really passionate, kind, and knowledgeable prof. She makes an effort to learn names. Her classes are all lecture with no slides so notetaking is key. This is sometimes difficult because she is very rambly. If Ethics is of interest to you and you understand/enjoy it, you will do great. If you couldn't care less and don't listen you'll fail.
Got C- or lower on every paper, but with grades such as participation and attendance, still ended with a decent grade in her class. Try your best to be her friend, and dont use phones in class or she'll call you out.
Giving her an average because I expect a college course to be challenging. She probably made it more difficult than it should have been. If you dont repeat everything word from word from her lectures on the exam, you get marked down. I was able to pass this class because she ended up leaving at the end of the semester.
I absolutely dreaded going to her class the first few weeks. But after the moral theories were done, I thoroughly enjoyed her class. She is actually pretty funny and definitely knows what she is talking about. Note taking is key and it has to be by hand so if you don't like handwritten notes don't take her!
Professor Lawless was a fantastic prof! She is a very passionate teacher and gives her students thorough notes. She has an awesome sense of humor, but will NOT hesitate to call a student out if they're being disrespectful. She says she doesn't give A's out, but her intro PHI course is impossible to fail if you take notes & do the assigned reading.
I'm not even done with the semester and I hate Lawless. Refuses to be "ethical" about the exam grading when answers are VERY specific and correct. 99/10 would not take again.
Professor Castelao-Lawless was a very nice lady and certainly tried to make class bearable, but wasn't a very good teacher. She's hard to follow in her lectures. Her handwriting is also atrocious and thats how all notes are taken. Only two tests and the final go into the grade book, so if you're not a good test taker then don't take her course.
I enjoyed having prof Castelao-Lawless. I told her at the beginning of the semester that I hated reading and she made a solid effort to make sure I enjoyed the reading. She is very passionate about history and is extremely knowledgeable on the subject. Just read what you are supposed to and take good notes and it will be hard to get a bad grade.
This woman is awful, i can handle tough teachers, but when you are disrespected, treated poorly told your thoughts do no matter; specifically when they are not in agreement with hers. She claimed my work was that of a high schooler, I transfred back to Univeristy of Colorado where I finished my academic career with high marks. avoid her if possible!
ugh. not happy with this lady. she is such a stickler (even during a pandemic) and has no empathy for her students. be prepared to follow her rules precisely, or lose points. it doesn't really matter if you're good at writing or philosophy, she cares more about enforcing her meaningless rules without any leniency. avoid if possible (esp. online)
Never taken ethics before, and she made it seem easy. Lectures were always interesting and I learned a lot of valuable things.
I started out the semester not really liking this class because it required mainly just watching lectures and then having to take your own notes for the test. No homework, no quizzes, just 3 tests. The first test I did terrible, but then when I started trying a bit harder and taking good notes it got a lot easier. Just pay attention you'll be good.
shes difficult to understand at times, and i just didnt like her teaching methods at all.
Professors knows A LOT about her subject, so dont go searching google for answers because they will be wrong. Her lectures are very boring with no visuals or powerpoints whatsoever, strictly just her talking. There are only 3 tests the entire year so you must do good on them. If you take good notes on lectures and pay attention youll be fine
One of the nicest professors I've had. She is understanding, caring, and respectful. Her lectures are just her talking so if you're a visual learning i wouldn't reccommend. But I enjoyed her lectures cause it felt more like a conversation and you could become really engaged and inspired. Overall very easy to get a good grade, only 3 open note tests
Shes really caring and understanding. But there were only 4 grades for the class each worth 25%, attendance and 3 essays. But she wasnt a tough grader. There was a reading for each class period, but she also provided a handout for each to help. Other than that it was a short lecture about the reading and then a class discussion.
She was a great professor and genuinely was interested in the experiences of her students. Her lectures were long but always interesting and inspiring. She would remember things her students said the first week of class and go back to them later in the semester. She really cares, and if you show up and show interest in the class, it's an easy A
Super nice professor that cares about her students! Definitely go to class because participation and attendance is a part of the grade. This course is mainly reading outside of class and discussing it in class. There's only 3 papers so make sure to do well on them. Overall easy class with this professor!
The only thing that matters in her class is the in class discussions because its the majority of your grade. She can be hard to understand at points but nothing too terrible and shes very knowledgeable. Also a very nice lady and will work with you as much as she can if anything comes up.
She is a queen. There are no exams. Three papers that are well explained and are clear what the topics are. Attendance is expected because you get points for class. Overall she is very nice and helpful. I would recommend her.
I took this class because I needed to fulfill my history credit, and I am glad that I took this class. Her lectures were long and boring, but she is very interactive with us as participation does matter. There are "quests" almost weekly, and they are really easy. The tests are online and are writing, but you CANNOT look up anything or she will know
Love this lady! She is so funny and a super kind human! Terrible handwriting ngl and you can't miss class but honestly why would you want too she is really the best!
You are mainly graded on attendance and participation, leading everyone to ask very dull questions for the sake of keeping up a grade. Her answers? Just off-topic tangents which leave many students staring at each other in confusion. Assigned 7 small papers, 1 final paper, 10-min presentation, and she forces your engagement rather than earning it.
Professor Castelao-Lawless is engaging, but her strict policies and tough grading can make the class challenging. Attending lectures is crucial, and using tools like unstuckstudy along with the textbook can help.
Professor Castelao-Lawless is super nice and friendly. Class is largely based on a short reading and response paragraph. She lectures for a while then opens the floor and most everybody shares something they took from the reading. Very open, low-stakes discussion and assignments. Would highly recommend.
