make sure to pay attention in class and complete all assignments on time and you will do well. she is a very nice professor and always available for extra help
She is an excellent professor who clearly specifies what she expects from her students. Very helpful and understanding. You get what you put into the class. Study all notes and read required material and you will do fine. Dr. Fiore is a very intelligent person and one can learn a lot through her lectures.
I've had her multiple times. She refuses to understand unavoidable emergencies. She requires attendance at events outside of class time. Gives a large amount of reading and expects assignments due on holiday breaks. Doesn't take your opinion into consideration. Avoid her at all costs, it will be a very hard and frustrating semester.
Professor Teresa Fiore is a great instructor. I admire her excitement in teaching italian. She has excellent effective teaching strategies, so the students can comprehend the lesson easier. She was always available not only her office time but after class too to answer any question related to the subject.
I had Prof. Fiore multiple times over the years, she is the best. The 2 grammar courses( 242 & 243) help me STILL with my writing and the Itali-American culture course 345 made me more connected with my Italian roots & Italian society. Overall thanks to her teachings, I landed a job at a fortune 500 company and use Italian EVERY DAY :)
I had Prof. Fiore multiple times over the years because she is one of the best professors. The 2 grammar courses help me STILL with my writing and the Itali-American culture course made me more connected with my Italian roots & Italian society. Overall thanks to her teachings, I landed a job at a fortune 500 company and use Italian EVERY DAY :)
Do not take her unless you have a lot of free time to do her assignmentsprojectsreadings (which are done at the same time) and to attend her required cultural events.
I literally have no time to do all the homework she assigns. There are about 2 or 3 articles each time that are 20 pages long and sometimes 30 minute to 1 hour videos... I barely have time to focus on my other classes and I'm barely keeping up with this one...
If you are a beginner to Italian, avoid this professor. I have not retained a single bit of information this whole semester, and am constantly confused as to what she is talking about because she only speaks in Italian during class. Get ready to spend $200 on a textbook you won't learn how to read.
The class itself sounds more interesting than it actually is. Her TA grades the homework and is a real stickler about it, but gave up towards the end of the semester thank god. SO MUCH WORK for this class, hw every week, Final paper and a Final exam. I Worked *very* hard and I doubt I'll get an A. Would only suggest if you like torturing yourself
This professor has no consideration for her students. She makes her events part of the attendance, even though they are not during class time. She would make you skip your other classes to attend her events. She would only let you express her opinion if she agrees with you, if not she will point in from of the entire class that you are wrong.
Take this class if you're into movies and history (here and there about Italian Americans). Professor Fiore has a vast knowledge of the films we study and her lectures are conversation-based. She looks out for students' success and prioritizes context clarity. If you watch the films and read, the homework is not bad; you get out what you put in.
nice but she does expect a lot. views every student as an Italian major. However, it is elementary level. So everything was doable. If I got a B+, never speaking Italian a day in my life before this class, then anyone can. However, I only missed 1 day (bad snow storm), handed in all my hw, went to 2 required clutural events. you have to put in work
what to say, other than she takes over your life with homework and mandatory attendance to her own events? she treats you like a major when you are not, expects you to speak fluent italian from day 1 and her projects for class take an inordinate amount of time. won't recommend to anyone. bad attitude & disrespectufl....!
Expects a lot. Weeks are separated by themes (Music, Politics, etc). Overall, the class was really interesting and you do learn a lot. Don't be afraid to share your thoughts and disagree as she expects you to read and thoroughly analyze the material. Mandatory outside events which can interfere with other classeswork and take notes while there.
I'm surprised people have such negative things to say about Dr. Fiore. She's an amazing woman. No, the class is not easy & yes, she does expect a lot but she's very helpful if you ask. I've learned a lot this semester, worked my ass off and I'm barely breaking an B+, but I'd definitely take her again! If you read, and try your best, you'll pass.
Professor Fiore is a tough grader but she is a good professor. She wants her student to be prepared to face discussions in class and for this reason she gives homework. I worked a lot but I managed to get an A so if you are willing to study you will not have problems in her class. I enjoyed her class and I would recommend Fiore to other students.
I am convinced that all the negative comments were made by students who attend college for the wrong reasons. Dr. Fiore is the most thoughtful and inspiring professor I have ever had. It is hard to come by a professor who cares so much about the success of their students. If the material is too dense for you, her office doors are open.
Dr. Fiore is a great professor and person. She is a bit tough and demanding but the way she organizes the semester, helps you stay on track. Extremely helpful and I recommend always keeping in touch with her; she appreciates when you communicate with her even if it's for small matters. I learned a lot and she pushes you to do well.
Professoressa Fiore's class has been enlightening to say the least. Very few of us knew about the specifics of Italy's history, how natives/outsiders view it and how it's been shaped over the past 150 years. We are now all experts of the material thanks to this class and Prof. Fiore. She cares about each student's progress and is always available.
Professor Fiore is amazing and gives in depth and thoughtful lectures. She is incredibly knowledgable about her field and can provide excellent insight about almost all topics within the Italian cultural realm. I would encourage all students to take Professor Fiore if / when they are willing and read to learn. She wants all students to succeed!
Really great course, opened my eyes to different perspectives of Italian culture. Class sizes are typically small so there is a lot of space open for meaningful discussions. Would recommend this course to anyone with an interest in Italian culture or anyone looking to learn about something new.
Great teacher and class overall. pay attention to readings and notes and you'll do fine. always available for extra help. would definitely take again. good amount of assignment but is always there for help and gives great feedback
Most stimulating class I've taken at Montclair. Teacher inspires with her abundant knowledge and her burning passion for the subject. Organizes great cultural events, spotlighting Italy-based experts who meet with students. Course is tough and work-intensive, but really pays off if you are genuinely interested in Italian language and culture.
Dr. fiore is the best Italian professor I've taken so far. She challenges you with her assignments and exams but that's the point when you're learning a new language. She's really passionate for Romance languages in general and really stimulates you to learn. Take her :)
Okay the people who are rating this professor bad just want an easy A in their transcript. You need to realize that once you hit the 200 and 300 level courses they just get harder as any other subject. She's great and really challenges your level of learning! Take her if you actually want to learn Italian!
Professor Fiore is an amazing professor. She prepares a lot of interesting items for each class and tries to involve every student. Her passion for the material inspires me to work hard and learn more. i would highly recommend her to any student of Italian.
Dr. Fiore is a great professor. She's passionate about Italian and transmits it. I'm considering to minor, let's see how 102 treats me. Don't expect this class to be an easy A, you get the grade you deserve for the amount of work you put in. She's a tough grader, but a fair one. If you want to learn, take her, I guarantee you'll learn.
I suggest taking this course with Prof Fiore. Yes there is reading, but it is after all a reading course. She goes into detail with grammar and is always willing to answer questions. You can tell she really cares about her students and will stay after if you have a problem. Always answers emails and is very flexible and understanding! Awesome prof!
Take this course w/ Fiore! I am an Italian Am. and there were aspects of my history that I never learned, and I learned them with Fiore! The movies she picks are fun and you can find most on Netflix, HBOGo, or Youtube. She's very invested in her students and flexible! Answers emails and is always willing to talk! Don't have to speak or be Italian!
Dr. fiore is one of the most dedicating professors in the Italian dept. she invest a lot of time in her students. All questions are welcome to her class, the word "wrong" doesn't exist in her vocabulary. She assigns a lot of work but it's all about learning a new language. Take her and I'll guarantee you'll learn!
Dr. Fiore is one of those professors that helped me a lot to improve my Italian grammar and speaking skills. Her lectures are very dynamic, clever and organized. She goes above and beyond to help her students. Her class can be challenging but you truly learn a lot. P.S love her accent! Take fiore ;)
As a NUFD major taking ITAL262 to fulfill my last GenEd requirement, I was nervous for this class. I am not Italian and I was unfamiliar with film terminology. However, I was pleasantly surprised as I gained so much insight that will permanently change the way I view film and my understanding of the history of Italians in popular culture/media.
Absolutely loved her class and her. She is one of the most dedicated and passionate teachers I have ever had. She is always willing to help her students if needed. I was surprised with how much I ended up loving her class. You will definitely love all the movies you watch. Take her!!! :) You will not regret it.
Best Italian professor without doubt. Dr. Fiore is super dedicated to her students and she spends a lot of time explaining things just to make sure students understand. There's a lot of work in her class but she's definitely worth it (:
great professor, great class. cares a lot about the subject. the films you watch are super interesting (raging bull, ladri di biciclette, saturday night fever, ) get ready to discuss them in depth - class discussion is a huge part of the course. professor fiore is super friendly and approachable, will help you with your work and offer extra credit
As a NUFD major, i thought this class would be easy. It is not, she is a great professor she cares alot about her students. She expects you to watch all the movies on your own time. She expects you to participate, This class is extremely boring
Shes tough grader but does not make unreasonable requests. She expects you to do the assignments you are given, and if you do what you are supposed to do she will reward you. She offers opportunities for extra credit, and likes it when students show that they go above and beyond to show interest (eg go to events, office hours, etc). PARTICIPATE!!
I was able to work with Dr. Fiore on a collaborative internship with the Italian Trade Agency and Choose New Jersey. As an Italian Major, having the ability to work with the Italian Government is an incredible opportunity and even though I don't speak the language fluently (yet) I was able to get by. Take advantage of this if you get a chance!
I was able to work with Dr. Fiore on a collaborative internship with the Sferisterio in Macerata, Italy last summer for their Opera Festival. Being an Italian major, this internship opened up my eyes to the world of audiovisual translation; a career path I want to pursue. It was an amazing experience and its an opportunity no one should pass up!
During my years at MSU I took 3 classes with Dr. Fiore. She is one of the best teachers I ever had. Thanks to her guidance I was able to do an internship in audiovisual translation in Macerata, Italy. The best time of my life! Her classes might seem hard, but don't complain - you're in college now. Just trust her to get the best out of you!
The course introduces students to not only classic films such as The Godfather, Scarface, and many more, but also educates students on historical and political aspects of the culture. Professor Fiore does a great job of making sure students understand the material, as well as providing students with a setting that allows for open discussion
Great teacher that really cares about her students. Very passionate for the material. If you go to class, pay attention, and do the weekly assignments you'll do great. If you never watch any of the movies don't expect to pass. She is really easy to talk to and is open if you are struggling with anything including time management. Talk to her!
Great selection of Italian-American film classics such as The Godfather, Saturday Night Fever, ... Prof. Fiore did an amazing job in both encouraging participation through discussion questions (which we did individually and in groups) and providing students with the necessary hist., polit. and cultural background. Fair grading, literature provided.
Prof. Fiore was a great teacher. She always came to class so prepared and her powerpoint were filled with useful information. On the weekly quizzes you could always refer back to her powerpoints, which made them really easy to navigate. She also knows her subject matter so well, and gave amazing and impactful lectures.
Fiore is super passionate about what she teaches and if you're truly interested in the class, you will enjoy it. The reason I wouldn't take her again is because she can be really condescending at times and make you not want to participate in class. Other than that she is a very educated professor that makes class discussions really interesting!
If you speak Spanish or understand it and want to learn Italian then THIS IS THE CLASS FOR YOU! She is a wonderful professor who cares about her students and wants them to pass and does anything she can to help you. There is a quiz and homework every week but do not let that scare you away because it will help you learn. Take her!!!
Professoressa Fiores class is a true opportunity for those that want to learn Italian easier and quicker. Since the structure of Italian is similar to Spanish by knowing Spanish, I was able to learn it much more efficiently. Being bilingual allowed me to learn and have fun at the same time and her class discovered in me hidden abilities.
Dr. Fiore is outstanding. Her concern for her students is highly evident. Her organizational skills are amazing. Everything is mapped out in the course outline and syllabus. She is always prepared. She gives ample opportunities for students to shine. Extra credit is available. She is flexible with deadlines and course content when needed.
DrFiore is such a sweet and amazing person, I took Italian for Spanish Speakers with her and it is actually really useful to have the connection between Italian and Spanish if you are a Spanish speaker. If you want to lear this is the class for you! You have 1 homework per class to review what you worked each class. Def worth taking it
Dr. Fiore is brilliant, sweet, and I loved her film class. Due to covid, half of our semester was conducted through zoom. Because of Dr. Fiores passion for the material and her students, online class was a triumph. She utilized her technological resources to make learning interesting and exciting. I walked away from her course a better artist.
I took this course during the COVID-19 pandemic, I experienced the class in-person and online. The high quality of instruction and course material remained the same. Learning Italian remotely through Zoom helped simulate some of the experiences language learners may experience as work places and communities become increasingly digital and virtual.
The way she delivered the lectures over Zoom was very helpful during COVID-19. I don't like online classes, but if it is offered fully online in the future, I still suggest taking it; you will not be disappointed. The content and objectives will be clear and the work load is manageable. Dr. Fiore is very caring and understanding in person & online!
I took Italian Americans in Film as a gen ed with Professor Fiore. The class was unexpectedly switched to an online format mid-semester but she did an excellent job. We met via zoom twice weekly and had great in-depth discussions. She always explained the material well and it was very straightforward. I really enjoyed this online class!
Professor Fiore is so caring and flexible. She wants to see her students succeed more than anything and is passionate about language and culture. The coursework is pretty light but still enriching. Textbook is in syllabus but not really necessary. An easy A as long as you put in the effort to learn!
If you enjoy Italian American movies and history, this class is for you. Prof. Fiore was amazing in the classroom and adapted to online learning very quickly. She held lively discussions connecting the movies to historical issues and current issues, even through Zoom, where we used our cameras and mics. Highly recommend and it is good online too!
Prof. Fiore is a great teacher. She was able to transition all of the information to an online format very smoothly. I was able to learn just as effectively as I did before being online. I was able to talk to more of my classmates thanks to the breakout rooms she would put us in. Overall, I think her teaching abilities made this online class work!
I highly recommend, to anyone who is on the fence, to take ITAL 111. You will not only be able to learn a language with a curriculum that is designed to make the learning easier, but you will also practice your Spanish. Dr. Fiore is an excellent professor! very understanding! Even as an online class, the learning & the work was manageable.
Watch the movies and pay attention to them, since you will have to analyze so many details to do assignments for each movie. Some assignments are not clear on grading criteria but make sure you analyze them really well. Do the work, participate, do the extra credit and ask for help and you can do good in this class.
In my time at MSU, I can honestly say that Prof. Fiore is one of the best professors I have ever had. Even in the switch to online learning, Prof. Fiore made sure that classes and lectures were engaging. Her courses are NOT easy- you have to work for your grade, but it is definitely worth it. I have learned so much in her courses!!
This is a GenEd class and available to all students. It's very interesting. Students watch important films & better understand necessary components needed to make a great film & simultaneously learn historical information of each. The syllabus clearly states the homework & deadlines for the entire semester. The class is interactive.
Professor Fiore is amazing! I'd say that out of the six courses that I took this semester, Italian 111 is the only one in which I feel I really learned something. Prof. Fiore always made classes interactive and fun. The class itself was great, especially for us as Spanish speakers. I'd definitely recommend it to every single Hispanic on campus.
Dr. Fiore is amazing. To make an online class as engaging as she did was a joy to be apart of. She did require all students to have cameras on at all times (because if we were in person you could not hide behind a black screen). She was super understanding of students during this trying time, and I looked forward to watching each movie every week
Do not take if you do not want to have your camera on and participate. Also, there is no understanding if you have to leave class early/ come late. Daily class is literally just reading off slides and discussing movies. It is an easy class, but annoying to have to sit through.
I don't know where these positive rates are coming from. She is one of the toughest professors I have ever met. Yeah, she's very caring and sweet, but she's an extremely tough grader. Expects participation constantly, and it affects your grade severely if you don't.
Dont take this class if you think itll be an easy A, just for watching some films. The professor is a though grader and expects youre clear with your answers or further explain them, and even if you think youre correct, she will criticize it. Her class is interesting if you want to learn more about Italian background.
She does not deserve the bad rap she gets. She cares a lot about her subject and tries to convey that to students. Many people took it as a GNED course but it is a major course so it's not going to be a show up and pass class. Overall, do the work and participate and you'll be fine!
Provides feedback on all work and is always willing to help you. This class is not an easy A. You have to put in the work to get a good grade. But I learned a lot from this class, and as a Spanish speaker, it made it a bit easier to comprehend. We took part in a COIL project with students from Palermo. A new and exciting experience that I enjoyed.
Professor Fiore is very straight forward and informative. Despite the criticism she's received, her class is nothing unmanageable, and as long as you take time to read the passages, watch the films, and participate in discussions, you're going to be fine. Office hours are also helpful, and she has no problem clarifying assignments and questions.
Grades unreasonably tough and tells you how to do the assignment after its over. Locks assignments after due date. Shes very nice and is excited about the content of the class. The final was specific and about films pre-midterm, even though she said it would be about post-midterm films
Professor Fiore is really passionate about the topics with discussed in class. She also always available out of class, and is very caring about her students. Overall it was a great course, just get ready to participate a lot.
Teresa doesn't understand how to grade a film analysis. She will criticize you for thinking differently than her and then give you a C for a heavily weighted assignment. Her classes are terribly structured and she seldom listens to feedback. Italians in film isn't a hard class but she makes it incredibly irritating.
I should've drop this class when I had the chance , she has quizzes every class period which tend to be very hard. Her midterm and formal question assignments were no cake walk either as she overcomplicates the work she assigns. She is also very rude to her students and doesn't take well to constructive feedback from students.
all movies are 2 hours or longer and you have to watch them outside of class. This class is manageable if you have nothing else to do besides study dates and directors of movies. Additionally, she's rude.
She is very gentle and kind to the student. Want all students to understand the concept of each topic/film and have a good grade. Taking 100 students (young adults) is a tough job, but kudos to her she is capable.
Despite what people think, I think Professor Fiore is awesome. The films we discuss in class pertain very well to the topic and inspire very interesting discussions about film, society, and issues pertaining to Italian Americans. She's incredibly nice, and everything about the film I've learned from her has become incredibly useful (and new)
She's great. Her lectures are very detailed and she wants to get to know her students. She encourages new voices to engage in the lectures and participate. Although her lectures are long, you do end up learning a lot about the subject. If you literally just do the work well you'll pass. Everyone's dramatic, don't blame her for you're bad grade.
Seems like a fun class, but it isn't. Don't take unless you like discussing films in depth analytically. Lectures are so long and boring. She's definitely unreasonable at times. I wouldn't take this class again, I wish I never did.
Professor Fiore's class is one of my favorite classes I have taken while in college. She teaches wonderfully and is extremely insightful. Her class lectures are thought-provoking. As long as you watch the movies and do your work, this class is fairly hard to do poorly in. I highly recommend this class.
Makes a really interesting course a lot harder than it has to be. Super hard grader, she refuses to give people an A on writing assignments. Would not recommend.
If you want an honest review don't look at the good reviews. Uses the full time for lectures, pop quizzes beginning of every class, grading is all over the place, and the lectures are not the entertaining. Reads off powerpoint about the movie we had to watch at home. Exams and test were so hard needed to know very specific details.
I'd never take this class again, even if I was paid to. I don't know how she has such high ratings, she's the worst professor I've had so far. Do not take her because she'll bring down your GPA. Thought this was going to be a fun film class, but boy was I mistaken. Take anything other than this class.
This class was brutal,so much harder then needed to be. Not sure how she has anything over a 2/5 rating. This class grade killed my GPA I went all the time and participated and still did bad. Very tough grader. Did bad even when I watched the movies
She is the absolute worse professor I have had at MSU. She took what should be a fun course and ruined it by overcomplicating all assignments. She will give opinionated questions and mark you wrong. She intentionally words questions in a weird format so that she can trick you. You also watch all movies on your own time. Class time is all lectures.
While I found this class to be very interesting, Professor Fiore made this class far more difficult than it had to be. The formal question assignments we got were very over complicated and sometimes did not make any sense. Make sure to watch all the movies as the quizzes ask for very specific details. She is also a very tough grader.
Professor Fiore gets a very bad rap. Yes, this class can be very time-consuming if you have a lot going on, but everything is laid out in the syllabus. She is a very easy person to talk to and is very understanding. If you have a lot on your plate, I wouldn't take this class. If you like movies, history, and have time to spare, take this class.
AVOID BY ALL MEANS
This lady does not know what she is doing. She teaches WHAT she wants to teach and does not care about the students. Definitely one of the worst professors at MSU by far :) A student by the way
One of the best professors I have ever had. She listens and makes sure that you are doing well in class. The assignments can be challenging only if you are not paying attention in class or doing the readings. Would 100% take again.
She will make assignments due at random times and not mention it to the class. She is a very tough grader and I feel like we did not do enough learning actual italian words and grammer in her class. We have just been expected to know everything with the occasional 5 minute lesson on verbs.
so funny and nice you do the easy work and pass very simple
Do not take her for anything in the world. Avoid by all means.
This class with Professor Fiore can be challenging, but using study tools like unstuck AI alongside the textbook can really help. Be prepared to put in the work, as she grades rigorously, but the material is interesting if you engage with it.
absolutely horrible of a professor. DO NOT take her for honors. she assigns way too much work. She expects you prioritize her class over anything else. horrible..
Do not take! A Gen-Ed that will tank your GPA. “Pop quiz” every class. She grades so harshly, never gives 100s. The averages on each assignment are 50 and she doesn't do anything about it. She expects you to put in the same amount of work as a major class when half of us aren't even an Italian major. Would've dropped went I had the chance. Awful.
She does not provide rubrics for any assignments, which makes it difficult to understand her expectations. She occasionally cancels class for mandatory events, which can conflict with other courses, and later posts in class quizzes that include questions related to those events. At times, she may come across as tone death.
She can be a bit micromanage-y and will be quite picky about your work. Assigns a lot of reading, and is very big on class participation. Doesn't like when you use your computer in class. But she does care and you'll learn a lot from her class.
