Terrible Teacher! Rushes through the material. Tells you you should just know the material. Not a good teacher!
She spends the majority of the class time lecturing. She trys to get through one section of the chapter per day. She will ask if anyone has any questions if time permits, if there is not enough time or no one speaks up you are expected to go see her during her office hours.
She does rush through material very quick. Her lectures do not give you what you need to complete the homework, almost expecting you to know already. Unless you go to her office everyday after class it will be tough.
She explains well however you need to practice the problems she gives in class. The tests are hard like 20 questions and are not multiple choice. she won't give you extra credit. Study hard and you'll make an A. If you want an easy A don't take her class.
You will have to work in this class, but that is a good thing. This is college, not high school, therefore you are expected to work. She does a great job of preparing you for your next college class which will be more difficult than College Algebra.
Horrible teacher!! makes a lot of mistakes while doing examples.HARD CLASS. expects you to read the section before going to class. Basically every test that she gives has the problems from the prior sections,so if you dont get a section then you will get that section of the test wrong. Test have a non-calculator part. you must memorize the formulas
Great, teacher! She'll spend an entire class explaining one concept if someone doesn't understand, which is great for the people who aren't so hot with numbers. Keeps things interesting with witty comments. Great teacher overall, if you pay attention and don't jack off every class, you'll get through it with ease. Taking Trig from her next semester
Ditto the last comment on 12/8/10. great student, teacher relations.
Overall, very fun and intresting professor! She makes class fun and is also helpful with her lectures. I hate math, and she would make it fun to where I wouldn't want to miss any class!
If you suck at Math i suggest you don't take her I suck at Math and could not keep up with her speed
She goes so fast through all of the material it is very difficult to keep up. She does not take into account that this is some peoples first math class in years and may need a little help remembering how to do some things. Yes test scores from way back when say we should be in this class doesn't mean we remember EVERYTHING from then either.
Love her! Her classroom environment and sense of humor actually made me want to go to class! A math class, at that! The most fun I've ever had in math, hands down. She's a great professor and is very clear in her lectures. Although I'm thrilled to be done with math, I'll really miss her class!
pretty awsome teacher! although she constantly called me out for having tattoos, she was a blast to have. very helpful and explained her processes.. great sence of humor.
Her class is a lot of fun. She does a good job teaching and also goes into some previous info for better understanding. And she pulled the greatest April Fools joke on the class ever. I'd really recommend taking her for Trig.
She is a great professor - clear, fair, and quite funny. I am not a math fan, but she made me enjoy my time with her this past semester. Her requirements for the class are simple, too. Show up, do your homework, and participate. I would recommend her to math folks as well as to those who loathe math because she'll make it fun and relatively easy.
Great teacher has a sense of humor class goes very fast, but you learn a lot. Make sure you study if not you will have a hard time, class consist of 4 test plus final exam, turning in homework and participating. Would definitely take her class again!
She is a great teacher! She is well versed in math and is definitely willing to help you in any way she can. Her class moves fast but she is always in her office before class for questions. She made it so much fun to be in math class during the summer! If she taught other classes, I would take her in a heartbeat. Awesome professor!
She is a real awesome teacher! She shows up early to class to review the work and get you ready for the test. Do the homework, she gets some of the questions for the test off your work. Its hard to fail the class.
She's a good professor and is very helpful. She's funny and makes class interesting.
I had her as a teacher and at first thought it was going to be fine...then I realized that she treats every student as if they will go onto calculus. She was not helpful, unforgiving, and to frank..sucks at life. By the second month of class there were only about 15 students, when it started there were like 35 in the class.HORRIBLE
me rivas what a wonderful teacher i suck at math to the fullest she came in class an hour early to help and the people that dropped had to be lazy cause if you do her work she is always there for you and willing to help i enjoyed her over the summer please take her this is the best math teacher at san jac hands down and + plus she is very funny.
Mrs. Rivas is a great teacher. She cares about her students, as well as the subject she teaches. Her test are not too difficult, and she assigns only as much homework as necessary to understand the material and do well on the tests. She is sympathetic and understanding of her students and their out of class lives. And she has a great sense of humor
SO wonderful. I took her algebra mini after 7 years being out of school. She's incredibly helpful after class, very organized, and caring. Tests are very fair and test to what should be learned. Gives a great foundation and really goes above and beyond. Ask her anything! She will help!
She expects everyone to know what she's doing, so fast paced and a horrible teacher. Do not take her for college algebra!!
She's so fast paced. It takes a while to catch up. Although she is a good teacher.
She is AWESOME!!! :D I took her for College Algebra, and she made everything so clear, went at the class pace, and always made sure everyone understood everything. Everything was CRYSTAL CLEAR. She will help you as much as you need it.
IF YOU WANT TO LEARN, HAVE FUN, AND PASS TAKE HER, IF U ARE LAZY DON'T. SHE WILL ALWAYS HELP U INSPIRE U AND TAKE TIME TO MAKE THINGS CLEAR- SHE HAS HELPED ME REALIZE MY POTENTIAL DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST PROF'S SJC HAS TO OFFER
From my experience in her pre-calculus class I will say that she is a very nice and friendly person. However, all the class notes are nearly always out of the book meaning that the quality of teaching is only as good as the book, and the book leaves something to be desired when it comes to teaching. If you do well in trig and alg just take calc.
This Prof Is the most understanding and really and truly cares about her students she is good at what she does and works really hard to make sure her students pass she is u go to class to learn and always show up on time ( she starts her class on time never late) then you will have no problem making an A NO MY MATH LAB all home work out of book!
Great math teacher. She's very knowledgeable and will explain whatever you don't get until you do. Has good sense of humor, too.
She is great. She expects you to be in class everyday. If you attend class, take notes, and do all the homework, you will do well.
Prof. Rivas is awsome! She is very smart and loves math. She is funny and teaches straight forward. She wants you to learn and will help and/or offer other resources. Time flies. Take her if you can. She is a great asset to this dept. and school!
This teacher was so helpful!!! I am HORRIBLE in math, but she made it interesting. You do need to go to class, but she is so funny & laid back, so you will want to go! I HIGHLY recommend her! She will help you if you stick it out and don't drop, especially if you go to class. She will not let you fail, she is amazing! I wish I could take her again!
She's an amazing instructor, absolutely love her way of teaching. If yiu don't understand the concept she will go over it until you do. I would definitely take her again if I need to take another math class in the future!
Prof Rivas is AWESOME! Truly cares for her students to learn and pass BUT you have to want to learn and put your part too. Stay on top of your HW. I would HIGHLY recommend her. She's HILARIOUS - Makes class fly by!
She awesome the makes the class fun and goes by quick HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE CLASS!!!!
Ms. Rivas is extremely helpful, she explains everything and she make sure her students understand. I hate math but Ms. Rivas helped me understand and offered tutorials during her conference hours. She has a GREAT sense of humor! And made class fun!! I would recommend her to anyone..
Prof. Rivas is the best! Extremely helpful and takes the time to go over every prob. She is funny and makes the class fun which frankly is hard to to do for a math class!
Mrs. Rivas is all around awesome! i went straight from high school into her class only because my senior math class was preping me for college algebra, but Mrs. Rivas is soo helpf if you need her she will be there (with her conference hours) she made class so much fun, and you wouldnt regret taking her, i took her for the 5 week class well worth it
Professor Rivas made class fun and her teaching style allows for students that aren't the best at math to understood the concept. She expects you to do the work and attend class everyday but if you do your part then she'll do everything she can to help you pass the class. I went into the class hoping for a passing grade and left with a B!!
She is definetly the best professor I've had so far! She is very helpful explains more in depth if asked and makes class very fun and worth going to. Take her and you will not regret it. I left her class with an A and I took her as a 5 week course
Professor Rivas is sarcastic and funny which made the class interesting. She explained every problem and was great to learn from. My suggestion would be MathLab before every class and visit her during her office hour if you need any clarification. She is a great teacher with a strong understanding of Math in every aspect. Success is guaranteed!
Mrs.Rivas is hilarious. Her personality keeps you interested in the class. I am the absolute worst at math in every way possible and mrs.rivas made it enjoyable! Strongly suggested to do homework, some of the test questions come from the homework.
She teaches at a very fast pace. If you need help she usually just tells you to go to the math lab after hours. Gives tons of homework. If your going to take MATH 1314 at San Jac try your best get professor Steele!!!! He is the best College Algebra teacher at the campus.
Would not recommend her. She is a nice person but not a good instructor.
Wouldn't recommend her. She makes little jokes that she thinks is funny and rushed through her lecture.
TAKE HER! Favorite teacher by far! i hate math but my interest was well kept! You will not regret taking her
I took her in 8 weeks. She is awesome and very clean on her expectations. She really wants to help you be successful. If you expect to pass just by showing up to class, then do not take her BUT if you want to learn MATH then definitely take her. She loves math and teaching it. You will leave her class with a greater understanding of math.
Funny teacher but she is really fast paced. Plus she doesn't really recap on anything in her lectures. Unless you are real good with math its going to be a tough class. Test questions are similar to the book and there are no multiple choice questions. My opinion, 8 week course wouldn't be a good idea especially with all the homework she gives.
Took a mini in the summer, almost died. but thats only because i hate math. Overall she's a very good teacher & extremely helpful. If you're going into this class expecting to be guided step by step think again. She expects you to know the previous material learned prior to this class therefore, she moves at a quick pace. I loved her though.
AWESOME!!! If you attend class you will do well, not my strong point but she will explain anything you dont understand and is always available for office time for extra help. If you show that you are trying she will help you. ASK QUESTIONS she loves that!! No "My math lab" necessary.
Prof. Rivas is a wonderful teacher! She is a bit difficult and does go fast but if you study the notes you can pass. She was always there in her office hours and was very helpful. Did not use MyMathLab; everything was from book.
I took college algebra with her during a 8 week course and it was the easiest class I had. We DIDN'T use mymathlab at all but she does provide the code if you want the extra help, and she was constantly moving around and teaching us from the beginning of the class to the end. She is extremely helpful and was one of my favorite teachers. Easy A!
She is a wonderful teacher. she is always available for extra help! Math is not easy but she helps you get through the class! Very nice, she does teach very fast but I had her for a 8 week class! Take her! You wont regret it!
If you ask for help she will help. Very funny. She explains everything good. Ask questions if you have to. I thought I was going to have a hard time but I didn't. I took her for the 8-week course. Seems like a lot of homework but just do what you can do and she will still count it. Do the homework it will make a difference from C to a B.
Mrs Rivas is HARD. Don't take her if you aren't good at math. She goes way too fast, and just tells you to go to the math lab if you don't understand. Doesn't correct the homework, so you can't get help that way. Her sense of humor does not over-shadow the fact that she doesn't explain math very well.
She is awesome and hilarious! If you are willing to put in the effort to do the homework she assigns then there is no reason you cant easily make a B on each of her tests. If she decides to teach Calculus I would totally take her!
Professor Rivas is the best math professor I've ever taken. It was my third time taking the course, and she is the only reason I passed the class. She is extremely thorough when explaining and as long as you do the work, you will pass.
Awesome teacher! She is funny but does move fast. Just ask her to slow down or explain more and she will. Open to spend time and answer any questions during her office hours. She does have a lot of home work but it is very helpful.
Very helpful and dedicated to her job and students. Is always on campus to tutor so take advantage of it!
Great teacher, also entertaining. She's like a female George Lopez. Very helpful and nice teacher, if you show her your working hard. Would of takin her for Cal 1, but she doesn't teach it. Good Luck.
Professor Rivas the best of the best! I've taken her for college algebra and currently taking her for pre cal. Her lectures are clear to the point of how the exam going to be. There is a lot of book work but that how you learn. Exams are easy compared to the homework. Take her!
She is a very interesting teacher. very helpful and clear about the work she presents. ask question. she has no problem stopping to make it clear to you. I'm not good at math, but as time went on i learned very much. plus she gives a review only on the stuff that will be on the test.
Great teacher. Passionate about her subject and the success of her students. Explains well and is willing to slow down and help you understand the subject. No curve balls on her test. Available during office hours to sit and go over problems you have with material. Very positive experience over all in her class. I highly recommend her!!
Prof. Rivas is a master of breaking down problems to where they can be understood. An artist in a world of math. To me this is the best skill for a math professor to have. She also keeps the class engaged and will stop and help anyone that asks. Returning to school after 20yrs I was able to get right back into it. Highly recommended!
Took for a 5-week mini, spent 4+ hours homework per class day. Does not follow the book so your test may be completely different from your homework. She does not tell you why she counts off, seems to make random deductions even if the answer is right. The final was 50% based on a section we were taught two days before.
Mrs. Rivas is an awesome instructor. Ive had questionable professors in he past. I absoluteluy loved attending her class. Shes hilarious and never boring. Shes very passionate about math and takes it very seriously. So dont hate on math in her class. Shes there to teach you math and you definately get your moneys worth. I highly reccomend her.
I took her for MATH 1314 for summer 1 and after the first week I immediately signed up for MATH 2412, based on her teaching skills. Always keeps the class focused and interested. She gives her students all the tools needed to pass her class. Her homework is designed to open your mind for the next level. Highly recommended!
I took Professor Rivas for a 5-week Pre-Cal course. Her exams were lecture based and a lot of homework was given out. In order to do well in her class, you need to get through the homework and study the lecture notes. Overall, she was an enthusiastic professor, who made the material easy to comprehend. I would recommend her to anyone.
This is a great Pre-Cal teacher. As an average math student, i did very well in her class. Not my strongest subject, but managed to get an A. She gives a review that's very helpful. I would recommend taking her. She's the best.
I took her for summer and I loved the class.
She was awesome. Wish she taught Calculus I
she is very great teacher but be prepare because she teach very fast. She help you what you need for the test. 4 Test and final.
best teacher ever!!! i begged her to teach cal 1 but she didn't budge, you have to do the homework to pass, easy a
This lady is the only reason I passed college algebra. I struggle with math and took this class and failed it 3 times before I signed up for her class. She really cares, has a funny sense of humor, and makes sure you understand the material. If you have a hard time with math, take her!!
She is a great teacher who will make you laugh, a lot. It was a fairly easy class for me, I have no complaints. She always answered questions and made the lesson plans very clear.
Ms. Rivas is HILARIOUS. I loved the class. I took her for a 5 week precal class in the summer and she made it not as bad. Her notes are very clear and the online turn in homework is mandatory but graded on effort and participation, definitely my favorite teacher for math I've had-clarity+practice. And the online hw has very helpful videos as well.
I took her for Pre Calc and she is really good, I enjoyed being in her class and understood everything. I love math and she made it even better and easier.
This was a tough class for me, but I haven't worked on Algebra in 20 years. Prof. Rivas is organized and helpful, but this is a fast-paced class. Must show up and take notes and then do work outside of class. My math lab not necessary, can just use textbook if you choose. Overall, I ended up with a B.
Professor Rivas is awesome and cares about her students. By far the best Math teacher I've encountered. But don't fool yourself, her class is tough if you're not prepared to work. Study her notes and do the homework. You won't regret taking her class.
She acts tough but she's really sweet and nice. Very helpful, i enjoyed her class a lot. 2 time taking 1314. passed with an A. Helped me over come my fear of college algebra. wish more teachers were like her.
Professor Rivas is great, If I could give her more than a 5 on any of these I would that is how good she is. Tells lots of jokes and keeps the class engaged at all times. Very passionate about teaching its clear she cares and tries to make math fun and easy.
Took her for the 5 week summer session. She's a great professor. Professor Rivas got her degree from a well respected school and is very passionate about math. She's very helpful.. but in the end, you will get the grade you deserve. Don't miss class, pay attention during her lectures, and do the required homework for each test and you will do fine!
So I came to university for my first semester, I took the pre-req for this course and thought I had this down. LOL NOPE! She assumes you know everything about math, and if you dont she does not help nor care. If I were you, take someone else. She seemed cool at first, but is super confusing and TOO FAST. So unless you took 1314 before, AVOID HER.
Was about to fail it so I quit. Didn't help me catch up nor care to explain at all how to do ANY problems even if I sat & stared at the board with an empty page. Though noticing it, (within, I'm like I paid for this) only helped those already caught up. I think she denied help too saying it's in the book. Tough class tho & tardies to be blamed too.
