Challenging, interesting. Definately worth the effort you put into it.

Extremely great teacher although hard grader....
Excellent professor. Opens your mind to all sorts of interesting documentaries and material. Lots of reading.
Great professor, teaches you to analyze and rethink things. Concise, fair grader, the 10-page paper was a p.i.t.a., seemed tough in the beginning but definitely eased up. One of my favorite classes and instructors ever. You need to keep up with readings.
This woman is the devil!!! If you catch a smile on her face i'll give u a million dollars. All we talk about is the stupid election and i haven't learned ONE thing about sociology. All her students do is talk about what a ****she is. A TOTAL WASTE OF YOUR TIME
The class opened my eyes. She gives a lot of notes and guides. It's fun & interesting but hard tough grader. Mid-term was way too hard. I look forward to this class each week. Films are interesting. I would nly recommend for serious students. Lots of reading, writing, and thinking.
Demanding! U learn a lot in her class. The devil? must be those girls who sit behind me & talk through the whole class. Personally, I liked discussing the elections through social conflict, functionalism, etc. It gives u a different perspective. She wouldnt say who she voted for,but we think she mig
I'll collect my million bucks before the semester is over, thanks. At first she's intimidating, definitely no-nonsense.objective mid-term. book report and final are lots of writing. reading is managable. She gives useful information and encourage students. high expectations, makes youthink, fair teach
Yeah, she's tough at first...and I, too, will collect my million bucks!! She's interesting and makes you THINK! Stay until the end of the semester and you'll see how much better off you are for taking her class!
The best class I ever took. I learned so much. Professor seems hard but really her class is fun enjoyble and interesting. She makes students write alot. If you don't have an open mind you won't like this class. You get motivated and inspired.
I took her in 2001. I remember her as one of my best professors. Sometimes I think about the class when things happen that reminds me. I have good memories of that class. The class had lots of references to current events and applies to real life situations.
Great class! Leon makes sociology come to life. After taking this class, I am seriously considering becoming a sociology major. She gives interesting facts and useful study guides. She is a hard grader but this class prepares you for transfering to a 4yr university. LOVED the class!
This PhD. has the most horrendous organizational skills I have seen since I left the military! The instructions for the term paper are so jumbled that I can hardly organize my thoughts to write!
OMG! This teacher is so hard! The problem is not her organization or directions. She is too specific and too clear about what she wants in the exam. She requires tons of writing (15-pgs) and gadzillions of sources. For an intro class its too much work. She is helpful, encouraging & interesting but
worked my butt off in this class! offputting at first (seems arrogant). if you can survive the military, you can survive this class. she is very "rulesy" and strict but will help you out alot. she is very organized but definiately demanding. she gives lots of guidance w/ handouts & study guides.
Gifted and dynamic teacher, one of the smartest instructors I have ever had, and extremely dedicated to her students progress. She's a bit on the strict and academically demanding side, but you really come to appreciate the complexity of racial studies after taking her. A memorable class!
I took this class during the winter semester and it was intense, she challenges students. She is passionate for what she does and that makes her class even more interesting. Highly recommended.
She is a credit to the field of sociology. She welcomes students to talk to her during, before, after class about anything. Highly recommended for SOC majors. If you want to learn, this is the class for you. But if you just want credits, look elsewhere. You will have to work if you want to pass.
Great class! It's tough&intense with tons of reading and writing, but she makes the class enjoyable. A very caring teacher, one of the best. Hard but fair grader. Gives excellent feedback on assignments, hand-outs & study guides. She allows differences in viewpoints. RECOMMEND HIGHLY!
WL is one of the best teachers, hands down. She considers improvement, quality. She's very fair, promotes respect and tolerance. The films and readings are really thought-provoking. Not an easy "A" or "B" but worth working for. I wouldn't say she's "hot" but she is beautiful inside and out!
very easy class not too much hmwrk and the teachers has a lot of active discussions. group work is encouraged
great professor. this class is very interesting. highly recommend her. she's a bit tough but if you put in the work you will learn alot.
Well learned, and very easy going and informative... Love this teacher.
Very strict teacher. Grades hard on writing assignments -doesn't give very many A's. Great class though, your mind will be provoked and good class discussions. Take her if you want to learn. You better be a good writer if you want a good grade though.
Worst teacher ever. A real fake person.
Great teacher -you will enjoy the class and even look forward to the discussions. She is very strict about attendance -so if you are a flaky person take another class. She will educate you and make you look at yourself in a different light!
Great teacher. She's very punctual and expects her students to be, so don't miss class. You'll question society which will help you with your essays. I must say she's a tough when it comes to essays, you must know how to write. Not many get A's but you will learn...
EXCELLENT lecturer, very thought-provoking, NEVER boring. Her syllabus is worse than her bite!Lots of reading, but very interesting.Essays are the only other homework, but there arent many. Shows GREAT films & is a fair grader.A MUST for any sociology major.Shes good at relating current events to the material.LOVED this class. She's also very funny!
A lot of reading for these courses, but overall they're interesting. Her lectures are engaging and now I am able to see the connection between what I learned, and what I see in society, government, etc. She makes you want to go into the world with a determination to break false notions and ideals.
Hard grader, unreasonable!!!
Takes herself too seriously. To the point of being obnoxious. Required textbook is her own work. First quiz expects you to memorize the Sylabus!! Will not hesitate to humiliate you in front of class just because you don't know the answer. Take DelPicolo if you can. Much better teacher.
This professor's lectures are what education is all about. She has the ability to convey new concepts and paradigms with clarity and context. I recommend this class and professor as a must for any person, whether or not they care about sociology. There were 3 papers to do, but they were well worth it for the eye opening educational opportunity.
i LOVED HER!!!!!!!!!! she was great!! i didnt agree with all the concepts but her lectures were great!!! i love her!!
amazing. easy A. i wish she taught other classes! you must take her!! i got an easy A. second day of class she gives a quiz on her syllabus. (easy) AMAZING. i loved her!!!. no complaints.
Do not take her during a winter session unless you love crazy beezies who assign a million papers. She is a tough grader and the class is difficult.
An easy-B class; have to work for the A. Lectures are engaging and material, interesting, but the professor is horrible. She doesn't care whether you succeed or not. She just gets her work done and leaves. Don't even bother trying to contact her off campus because it's impossible. Class = fun. Professor = Obnoxious, needs to learn professionalism.
HARSH GRADER. there's one essay, one midterm essay, and one final essay. expected to cite from "every" reading, lecture, video, etc. she's super organized- doesn't go by her own syllabus. never replies to e-mails! she talks about the same thing everyday. worked hard and got an A
If your willing to work take her, if not then don't bother. I love this professor! She just starts talking and keeps going so your never sure what your going to cover. Take good notes as these will come in handy for your papers and read the books. 3 papers, 1 in class midterm.
One of my favourite Professors at SMC. You have to write long essays with lots of citations. If you are willing to read a lot and write a lot, take her. Essays demand a lot of time, compared to other classes, but you will learn a lot. Take notes every class, even when you think you don't need to--you need to. Class discussions are great.
She is a difficult teacher and grader. You have a few quizzes, but they are only for participation. You have no tests, but many papers and a huge final project. TAKE CLEAR NOTES IN HER CLASS, WRITE EVERYTHING SHE SAYS DOWN. She requires that you site class notes (with the date) in all of your essays and projects. If you like to write take her class
I loved her class, she is insightful and made me a better critical thinker. She takes her time to help her student, her classes were never boring. the essays are a challenge but do what she tells you and you will get an A.
By far the most inspiring and dedicated professor I have had. She sets high expectations for the class, encouraging you to do your best. Listen to her lectures, participate, and write, write, write!
Must have an interest in social sciences to appreciate this class. She is intelligent, has clear lectures, and appreciates it when students take the time to analyze social issues both in lectures and in paper assignments. Sometimes classes can seem long. Work is minimal and lectures are insightful! Class requires good attention and note taking.
She is amazing. She's very intelligent and passionate about what she teaches and it really rubs off on students. There are little to no quizzes, but requires you to write essays. 1 first essay, 2 midterm, and 2 final.
She is an amazing professor and you will enjoy this class. Started off not really sure if i wanted to learn about APA's and it ended up being my favorite class!
She really is passionate about what she teaches. Really good teacher but if you don't like writing essays I don't recommend it at all. She is a great teacher and if you want to be influenced then take it
I took her critical thinking online class for winter session. It was only three weeks and pretty short and intense to cover whole stuffs but she tried to make it easy and fun. Lots of reading materials but highly related to her paper assignments. Do readings and try to follow her advice, and you will be okay:)
This professor is intense, and has a deep passion for sociology. The subject requires a lot of work that is worth it to prepare you for upper division if you're a soc major. Overall she gives amazing lectures, and gives great examples from her own experience. Easy A if you work for it, however not for the lazy mind.
Doctor Williams-Leon is one of the best teachers I have had. She is accommodating on grading on the final grade, her lectures are clear and creative, and she is funny sometimes! This is good class for any sociology major! Take her!
final two essays that are six pages if you follow the guideline it only gives you a C you have to go above and beyond to receive an A. one quiz, and a book report that has to be six to ten pages with an oral presentation. basically your grade is dependent on the final, book report, and quiz. SOCIOLOGY? more like Asian American history class.
The entire semester is easy and gave one pop quiz with a makeup quiz, however towards the end of the semester she expects you to buy an additional text, and type a 6+ book report on it, and for the final she makes you type two essays with very strict criterian and very high standards. Her class is more of a history than actual sociology.
We basically watched movies everyday. Open notes on quizzes. No tests. Strict no cell phone policy. Good luck on getting an email back ever. Never really needed the book up until the last week of class where she gave us two final essays 6+ pages on each. The questions were really long and worded weird. Incredibly easy class, up until the final.
Professor Williams is an awesome professor. Would recommend.
I took Dr. Williams-Leon this summer and it was amazing! She really cares about her students and she's awesome!! We had a potluck the day before our presentations and it was fun. Lectures were always interesting and engaging!
This professor is the worst teacher I've had at SMC. First two weeks of class were so pointless and a waste of time. Assigns a big research projects with no criteria. Very disorganized and I did not learn a lot.
Didnt learn anything with this professor because class was cancelled half the time. Get ready to read your textbook because her lectures barely cover any material for quizzes. Strict no cell phone policy. Hope you also enjoy group projects. If youre not taking this class as a Sociology major, dont bother with this class.
AVOID TAKING THIS CLASS she doesn't teach. period. she was gone most the semester and expected us to take 3 tests and a final plus a research project. She doesn't respond back to emails nor inputs your grade. I had to email her 5 times to know what I got on an assignment and still haven't heard back!
The instructor buries the students in reading materials. Her lectures are poorly written and disorganized, but she expects her students to be organized and have quotes from every single lecture and reading material given. There are lots of typos, fragmented and incomplete sentences in her writing. She doesn't allot sufficient time for assignments.
The worst professor Ive ever had, and Ive had quite a few. She does not teach, youll have to teach yourself from the textbook. On quizzes, even if you get the answer right and you dont cite the source right, youll fail. She assigns projects with absolutely no guidelines and actually thinks shes teaching us.
OK HOLD UP, these reviews are super unfair & not true to Prof. TWL's character! She is seriously one of the most informed, inclusive, knowledgeable & kind professors at SMC. She tests you on what we discuss in class & a bit of the reading. NBD! She works with you & is motivating. I've learned a lot & will be a better because of this class, take her
Anyone who gives her a good review is lying. Every class -when class wasnt cancelled- we would always talk about horrible she is and how she does not teach. I'm a 4.0 student & there is only 3 weeks left and she has only graded ONE quiz. She expects more from her students than she does for us and didnt give us clear guidelines for the group project
Very unorganized, 3 weeks left of class and only ONE quiz has been graded. Very unfair to have such high expectations for students and then miss up to 5 classes as well as slack off and 'forget' to grade things. This class has made me feel like I have no control over my grade because I have never received anything back.
She is the most unorganized teacher I have ever encountered. She has only graded one quiz, misses class constantly, has extremely high expectations, runs off on tangents, teaches random material but tests only off the of the textbook, and has a completely tedious and unnecessary group project. Do not take this class if you are looking for an A.
Although she is nice and seems to be very passionate about Sociology, she would always cancel class and would be very confusing with her guidance in our group presentations and exams. She also seems to love to lower our grades for stupid reasons and takes pride in the fact that not many people get As in her class.
The WORST teacher I ever had. Avoid this class!! She does not teach you anything and loves to fail students with no clear guide lines of what she expects from you. She cancels class last min and changes her grading system like every week. I did not enjoy a single minute I spent listening to her talk about her "political views" every class. No.
She missed half the semester lol. And to make up for that she tries to be extra critical in her grading and is one of the toughest graders Ive seen. Overall she could be funny at times but that doesnt help your grade. Be prepared to go into detail when doing her assignments.
I actually really like Professor Williams Leon as a person, she is incredibly passionate about her chosen field. However I wouldn't rec taking this class unless you're a sociology major because it is honestly very difficult. Keep in mind that the "quizzes" (which are actually tests) are open note and the group projects are designated, not chosen.
Take her only if you're a sociology major. Yes, the tests were hard and she would cancel class sometimes but the big things that matter are the project and the final. The A is not hard to get, just try and take good notes from the chapters she tells you to read (you can use them during an exam). Make sure you don't slack off on the project!
I liked her as a person but she assigns a 12 page paper!! If i wouldve known this i wouldve dropped a longggggg time ago
I was nervous going into this class because of the reviews here but I was pleasantly surprised by this professor. The people who do not like this class seem to not like it because of the workload but its a normal workload! You have all semester to work on the project so those who wait until last minute will have a hard time. Overall, LOVED her!
One of the least organized teachers Ive ever had. We had 1 test and she asked us questions like what percent is participation in this course. Very stupid class and didnt learn anything. If you put the effort in the right places and learn what do to early youll get an A. Shes horrible though.
Took her winter 2019 and we had only had 1 midterm. The final was the group project which pretty much determines your grade so make sure you follow instructions. The questions on the midterm were pretty ridiculous because it's open note and covers syllabus, the book, and her lectures. Make sure to participate in class and show her you care.
rambles a lot in the beginning and the midterm covers the most random topics. we had a study group with about 15 students and we all failed the midterm (30% of ur grade) then you have a group project and an additional 10 page research paper. She is very vague with guidelines and will just tell you to look at the syllabus, also unclear
A mid-term (30% of your grade) there was so much extra credit!!!! I highly recommend reading the chapters she assigns and literally writing it all down in a notebook or you could fail the midterm. There is a group project , an evaluation of group project paper, and a 10 page paper. Thats all the assignments! Easy if you don't procrastinate.
Overall, nice professor but tests were verbatim off the syllabus and ice breaker responses from your classmates. It was as if she was trying to make an easy class unnecessarily difficult. Still, easy A if you pay attention. Beware of group projects!
She is so NICE! Sometimes she brings snacks! She gave us a take home Mid-Term, & she also assigned us with a film-analysis paper of 7-8 pages. But she gives us ENOUGH time to do the paper (about 3 months). Our final was a group project on the film she assigned each group, plus a take home test. I highly recommend if you hate reading (like me)!
Winter Session: Pros: Lots Of EC & Fairly Easy Workload (Couple of CH Readings & Quiz's) Cons: Lectures Get Off Topic & Sometimes She's Late/ Class Is Cancelled. ALWAYS take notes of the lectures, Anything could be on the Quizzes. Open Notes Midterm. The Entire Class You Are Working On A Group Project. Communicate & DO YOUR Part And You WillPass.
I was kinda scared to take her class, she was the only one teaching Soc 4. After, the first day she seemed like a pretty good teacher ! She does get off topic at times pay attention to her no matter what and take notes ! Her midterm is a combination of in class lectures, syllabus and your group members ! The midterm is open notes ! Write down page#
She is so passionate ! She is literally a good teacher, I know many dont like professors that go off topic or that assign group projects. You can learn a lot from her though, the midterm is based on class notes, chapters in the textbook, syllabus and your group members. Dont let rate my professor fool you. Beware of pop quizzes they are random !
Professor Williams-Leon is a kind, informative professor. She is very knowledgeable about Sociology. However, she often goes on tangents during her lectures and does not cover the material in your textbook. In addition, you must take detailed handwritten notes in her class of everything that she says in order to use them for your exams.
What an amazing professor to jumpstart my passion for sociology! She can seem real intimidating because of her very specific rules and sorta tough grading, but she is very sweet and endearing, and will give you help if you ask for it. She is very passionate and provides many real-world examples that help you understand concepts very well!
Lots of people here say she's unorganized but if you ask her questions to clarify she is ALWAYS more than happy to help. I'm taking her class during the Corona/social distancing so we're all more confused/stressed- she is very understanding. I've bugged her with so many emails of questions and she answers them very quickly and is so nice about it!
Professor Williams-Leon cares for the well-being of her students.
I took her class during the winter semester and I really enjoyed it. Her lectures were always interesting and she would try to connect with her students. She cares about her students and she's really easy to talk to, as well as understanding. She assigns groups to work on a research project but she provides plenty of class time and resources.
Professor Williams-Leon, is a fantastic teacher, who evokes serious conversations about the real world, and the sociology behind it. I took her Sociology 4 class over the summer, and am currently taking Sociology 1 with her. If you put the time into your work, and as she says, be an A student by putting forth your best effort, then you'll get the A
This professor is the worst one ive had in my two years at this school. I have a lot to say about her lack of professionalism. She does not reply to students for weeks, and does not care about her students whatsoever! We decided on a grade change together and then never submitted it and wont reply to any emails. Truly doesnt care about students
Such an amazing teacher. I took the class in the fall and it consisted of writing 10 journals the entire semester, and she gives an outline, but you can choose to answer however many as you'd like. There is one midterm and the final is a paper that you write based on a given film. Zoom attendance is also optional
Professor Williams Leon was a great choice. Very understanding and did very well despite the remote learning.
I took Soc2 & it was so easy I always felt anxious like I must be missing something. Optional "lectures" that felt more like group therapy. Literally 2 essays with multiple chances to repeat- no hw, no tests, no book. Really nice/caring but seemed like she had too much on her plate. I'm pretty sure she never even read my final & just gave me an A.
Didn't know what grade I got until she put it in Corsair Connect. 2 essays, 3 discussion posts, and attendance are the only things you are graded on. Responds to emails pretty fast. No lectures, just copies and pastes sociology resources for you to reference from for essays. She doesn't give feedback on any assignments. Essays are about 6-8 pages.
Winter Semester: 2023 in person. Professor TWL, is very caring and wants her students to succeed. Easy to talk to, also will respond to emails quickly. Don't be afraid to ask her questions or to email her. She is more than happy to help her students. I was intimidated taking a winter class, but her class was amazing! I recommend her class 10000%.
Good lectures but other than that, I would not recommend. Graded on VERY few things, you will have no idea what grade you're at until after the semester is done (aka you can't fix it) she grades things very very slowly. Unclear instructions so assignments (especially the final for my class) and communication is so-so. Interesting lectures though!
Dr. TWL is the best! She is so caring and has great lectures and videos. Her grading is super clear and she has a lot of opportunities for extra credit. I have nothing bad to say, I love her and she is so understanding and funny. We all love her!
Took Prof TWL's hybrid Soc4 class. Arguably the easiest A I have ever received as we weren't graded on anything besides a syllabus quiz and a group project which she dedicated 10 weeks of the course to. Lectures were more her getting off-topic and ranting about political views than education. If you want an easy A but to learn nothing, take it.
AMAZING professor! Makes sure you do well and has a super clear grading criteria. You are graded on a few things, which I think makes the class easier and less stressful. Make sure you have a notebook though as electronics are usually not permitted. Overall, I would take her class 1000x again! The class is super interesting as well!
Great professor, nothing bad to say. Answers emails quickly and really cares about her students.
Talks hella but shes actually the goat. Definitely would recommend taking this class if you need to. Easy A. Take this class trust.
Took her for winter semester. Very easy A. The only required assignments are 2 easy discussion posts, take home final essay (5-6 pages), and take home final exam (6-7 pages). Offers a ton of extra credit. You are basically guaranteed an A if you try. Personally didn't learn much and didn't find the class interesting, but you may.
Professor Williams-Leon has to be the nicest professor ever. Her lectures are super entertaining, she's funny and there is never a dull lecture with her. She's really understanding towards the students too, and her passion for sociology is what makes the course really fun.
